BLUE KNIGHT HEAD COACH MIKE GOLDSCHMIDT Mike Goldschmidt took over the Blue Knight baseball program on August 1, 2007. In his first ten months at the helm, Goldschmidt guided Urbana University to a win over an NCAA Division I team, a ranking as high as No. 3 in Region IX, and the program’s first NAIA Region IX Tournament victory. During his first season in the Royal Blue and White, Goldschmidt achieved a major career milestone. On April 4th, Urbana defeated Walsh 7-6 in 10 innings, landing Goldschmidt the 200th win of his head coaching career. Immediately after the season, Goldschmidt saw the first Blue Knight baseball player sign with a major league baseball organization when junior pitcher Jaeson Hudnall inked a deal with the Kansas City Royals. Prior to the 2008 season, Urbana was picked to finish eighth in the preseason American Mideast Conference poll. The Blue Knights surprised many, finishing fourth and earning a berth to the Region IX tournament where they shut out topseeded Malone, 4-0. That happened to be the only shut out the Pioneers’ suffered all season. Urbana advanced to postseason play by sweeping the last two games against World Series qualifier and rival, Ohio Dominican. Urbana finished Goldschmidt’s first year at 28-21. Ace Jaeson Hudnall was named 1st team All-Conference before signing with the Kansas City Royals that summer. After the 2008 season, Urbana University left the NAIA and American Mideast Conference in preparation for the school’s transition to NCAA Division II.

In 2009, the Blue Knights finished 23-21 and defeated their first ranked D2 opponents: University of Montevallo and Northern Kentucky University. For the second year in a row, Goldschmidt’s Blue Knights knocked off another D-I opponent (Chicago State). Jordan Baker was named the D-II Independent Player of the Year, setting the single season school record in batting average (.497) and home runs (15). His .497 batting average was tops in the NCAA that season. Following his senior year, Baker signed with the Florence Freedom in May of 2009. Other All-Independent selections from that 2009 team included Russ Chambers (1st team) and Dustin Lacy (2nd team). In 2010, Urbana finished 19-21, playing mostly a D-II independent schedule that featured 9 games against ranked opponents. As a team, the Blue Knights hit a robust .341. The Blue Knights placed four members on the D-II All-Independent team. Andrew Harrell, Matt Mays, and Shane Pfouts were all 1st teamers, while Brad Cockerill and Matt Murphy earned 2nd team honors.

Coach Goldschmidt By the Numbers

The 2011 baseball season marked Urbana University’s first as official members of NCAA Division II. Urbana raced out to a 14-16 record despite losing 9 seniors after the 2010 season. Unfortunately, a rash of injuries, coupled with ambitious scheduling, sent the Blue Knights reeling down the stretch. A 10-game losing streak ended Urbana's season at 14-26, but the squad still managed to finish 4th in the country amongst D-II Independents, landing three players on the All-Independent Team. In all, Urbana lost 12 games by two runs or less, all while starting four or five freshmen most games.

· ·

Goldschmidt's young team started to put it together in 2012, winning 7 more games than they did in 2011. The Blue Knights finished 21-26, including a win over nationally ranked Wayne State College. He picked up his 100th career win as a Blue Knight as Urbana finished an even 8-8 against the D-II Ohio Independents.

· ·

In 2013, the Blue Knights climbed back above .500 for the first time since the '09 campaign, finishing 22-19 while competing in the new Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Urbana's squad featured the G-MAC Offensive Player of the Year (Robert Tavone Jr.), 5 All-Conference selections, and the program's first ever NCAA D-II First Team All-Region selection (Drew Ryan). Goldschmidt picked up his 300th career coaching victory early in his 11th season, and he guided the program to its 2nd victory over an NCAA Division I program when the Blue Knights knocked off Wright State 6-4 on May 1st. Goldschmidt enters the 2014 season with a 127-134-1 mark in his 6 seasons at Urbana. In 11 seasons coaching at the collegiate level, Goldschmidt is 316-226-1 (.583). Goldschmidt's team is excited about raising the bar in 2014. For the second year in a row, the Blue Knights have a new conference home, the Mountain East Conference. The 12-team MEC will offer some of the best competition yet for the Blue Knights during the Goldschmidt era, and the team is ready to make their mark in the new league and region. Goldschmidt's Blue Knights have never shied away from the top competition in the country. The Blue Knights knocked off #30 Montevallo on Spring Break in 2009, and they have shown they are capable of hanging with some of top talent in the country.

Birdie Kim, the 2005 U.S. Open Women’s Golf Champion owes part of her success to one of our alumni? Absolutely. Miles Nixon, an Urbana grad, was Birdie’s caddy! An Urbana University graduate has been in the boxing ring with the likes of Evander Holyfield, Oscar de La Hoya, and George Foreman? Believe it! Brian Garry has officiated over 1400 professional boxing matches including 50 world titles! David Letterman had an Urbana alumnae as a guest MULTIPLE TIMES on his show? You can bet on it! Gretchen Worden, best known for revitalizing the famed Mutter Museum, appeared with Dave many times. One of our former baseball stars played professionally in the Kansas City Royals organization? Yes, it’s true. Pitcher Jaeson Hudnall signed a contract with the Burlington Royals after his junior year in 2008! Urbana University students really can reach for the stars! Seriously. One of our former students, Tom Hennon, has been a crew member on the space shuttle Atlantis, and flown three space missions!

Blue Knight Field Located on the south end of campus, Blue Knight Field is home to the Blue Knight baseball team. The field was renovated in the fall of 2008 thanks to the Mercer Group. The infield was laser graded and re-sodded, and a new outfield fence was installed. The new dimensions are LF312, CF- 390, RF- 318. A brick and net backstop was added in 2011 (pictured above during installation). A press box and a concession stand were added behind homeplate in 2012, and fundraising is already underway for permanent seating behind home plate.

The University of Kansas Women’s Resource Center is named after an Urbana alumnae? Dr. Emily Taylor was the original founder of a women’s higher education development program from which OVER 100 women have gone to become college or university presidents or chancellors! An Urbana alumnae was President of the West Virginia Institute of Technology and led them to become one of the best rated comprehensive universities in the country? Dr. Karen LaRoe recently retired and is now on the Urbana University Board of Trustees.
