Looking ahead we have some exciting plans for artists. This year, again, we’ll be hosting the SUSAN COOLEY-GILLIOM ARTIST IN RESIDENCE TEACHING PROGRAM FROM THE PLACER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION featuring nationally established artist, LAURA ROSSPAUL. It’s an exciting opportunity to learn from this established instructor who will be visiting in the fall. The ART program is permanently funded through an endowed gift made to the Placer Community Foundation in memory of the beloved local artist to develop and enhance visual arts in Placer County. It’s with great pleasure we welcome our new staff member Lori Cardoza. Lori will be working with our volunteers and membership development. If you haven’t met Lori, please stop by and say, “hi.” With that, we say farewell to Lauren Hostetter who began as an intern and has been with Blue Line Arts for more than 14 months. Lauren has the opportunity to work for a coveted museum in Berkeley. I do hope you’ll visit soon to see the range of art from our artist members who make Blue Line Arts a destination for every artist. Sincerely,

2013 VISITING ARTIST LAURA ROSS-PAUL

Oct 15th - Nov 5th 2013

Looking through the lens of the seasons helps us understand nature’s different personalities. Often, just as a season’s essence begins to register, it changes and a new personality surfaces. Whittling away at the uniqueness of a moment in nature focuses me on being present. What is the essence of any given moment? The paintings are steeped in reality but driven by deeper motivations. Identifying those motivations proves elusive in written form, but may be discovered through the working process of painting, where pushing materials around makes anything possible. Looking for new possibilities in paint is a magical force for me. “What if I tried this?” I’m a cook that can’t stick to a recipe. Nothing in nature ever stays the same, why should my approach to emulating it? -Laura Ross-Paul 10 • Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org

RESE

Using a variety of mediums, students will practice their drawing skills with a nude model as their subject. Various drawing studies will be covered with the goal of creating a drawing style that incorporates line, value and color, which can be practiced and refined into an “empty” drawing book that each student will create during the first class. DAY ONE will cover how to approach the figure through gestures. Emphasis will placed be on line, movement and color theory. Various static poses, objects and movements will be explored. DAY TWO continues the drawing studies into subject matter moving into other objects: a clear glass of water with an object inside. Diving into the basics of seeing the 3-D world and replicating it in 2-D form. DAY THREE will be working with our empty books and rolling pens. Students will use different materials to experiment. Encouraged to emphasizing their own approach, students will finish the workshop with a review explaining their skills and how they will incorporate them in their creative work.

RESER

The goal of this workshop is to enforce the basics of figure drawing and painting using proportion, figure/ ground relationships, color theory and the exploration of combining materials. DAY ONE includes gesture drawings with short poses that increase in length. Simple figure/ground relationships will begin with spatial relationships to the paper’s edge, value gestures in black and white, overlapping/contrasting color and finally, incorporating color. DAY TWO will begin with a focus on the figure in specific portions (face, hand and feet) and finally a longer clothed pose emphasizing compositional flow. DAY THREE includes a focus on combining materials that reflect transparency and opacity. A specific demonstration on overlapping wet materials over dry for a unique effect will encourage experimentation. A review and peer critique will be scheduled for the last half of the day.

Working at Blue Line Arts was an incredible experience for me. What began as a volunteer job in the summer of 2012 eventually blossomed into an internship and then into part-time employment as the Membership and Development Coordinator for the gallery. Julie, Tony, Katie, Kathleen and all of the amazing volunteers, artists and interns at Blue Line Arts became like a family to me in the short period of only one year. Through their encouragement and mentorship, I learned more about the business of running an arts institution than I ever could have at a larger organization in such a short period of time. Although I relocated in the middle of this July and have moved on to a new job in the Bay Area, I will never forget Blue Line Arts and the thriving art community that continues to grow around it. I still plan to attend as many receptions as possible, and I look forward to seeing plenty of old friends and new art when I do.

Like a Family,

Thank you to everyone at Blue Line Arts for all that you have taught me. I look forward to seeing you in the future, and I wish you all the best! Sincerely, Lauren Hostetter Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org • 17

ADULT WORKSHOP SERIES

Fused Fabrics with Danuta Dias

The fused fabric technique is unique as it is intricate and yields beautiful, delicate results. Dias’ “wet felting” process involves designing the composition of her piece using different colors, themes, and textures, wetting everything, then creating temperature changes so as to get the fibers to weave together and bond. The process results in organic, one-of-a-kind works of art that can be worn as well as displayed. DONATIONS NEEDED Throughout the community Blue Line Arts has become a center for educational art activities for children. Each month we have a wide range of engaging opportunities from painting, drawing and clay working classes to textile workshops just for kids. With all of these handson classes we go through an exorbitant amount of materials. We could humbly use your help in replenishing these supplies, and we would be grateful for any donations. We are currently in need of paintbrushes, acrylic paint, canvas boards and construction paper. Thank you for making these children’s activities possible.
