Blue Southern agree their first TWS deal with long-standing customer Tazrock

Established in 2016, Tazrock is a specialist crushing and screening company supplying the quarrying, construction and recycling industries. Their services include machine hire and sale, crushing, screening, plant maintenance, supply of quarried and recycled aggregates and bespoke fabrication and welding solutions.

Having been a long-standing customer of Blue Machinery Southern, Tazrock have run Powerscreen machines within their crushing and screening operation for many years. The company recently took on an exciting new project which required the installation of a new wash plant. Having gotten word that Blue had become new dealers for Terex Washing Systems (TWS), the company opted to work with Blue Southern and TWS on the new plant.

The primary objective of the plant will be to wash dirty quarry overburden, with the key pieces of equipment consisting of a Terex AggreSand 206, a Terex AggreScrub 150 and a Terex Filter Press 2015. All of which have been manufactured by Terex in Ireland.

The AggreSand 206 is a highly versatile integrated washing station with outstanding performance capability across a wide range of materials and the ability to offer up to 5 washed and sized products. The no-compromise design

ethos adapted ensures maximum serviceability and performance despite the highly integrated and compact nature of the system with numerous innovative features including easily removed pumps, ready access to screening media and intuitive controls.

Terex’s AggreScrub 150 produces up to 4 grades of washed, screened aggregate. Key benefits for customers include improved wear characteristics, reduced costs, and the ability to effectively scrub aggregates and float out clays/silts/lights on one chassis. In addition, there are also a number of paddle options available depending on customers’ needs, including the traditional hard wearing AR blades in 15 and 30mm variances as well as a new high manganese steel option.

This project will include the first Terex filter press installed in the UK. The Terex AquaClear filter press range are a high performance, side beam plate and frame filter press designed specifically

for demanding aggregate, mining and recycling applications. The heavyduty construction and high-pressure slurry pump technology combined with optimally sized hydraulic rams ensures maximum performance and reliability, maximising water recovery, higher production and faster cycle times.

We spoke to Tazrock’s Director, Jonathan Lewis, who explained why he chose Blue and TWS for the new project: “We already have a great working relationship with Blue Machinery Southern and Terex through our crushing and screening company.

We made the decision to buy a Terex wash plant because we know that Terex’s products offer good reliability and quality. They also offered us a short lead time on the plant, and all being well it should be in by early 2023. We’re looking forward to working with Blue on this project and we’re excited to get the plant up and running.”

RFS add unique Fuchs handlers to their extensive fleet

Click to watch the two RHL 360Fs unloading trains for RFS

RFS is a leading UK provider of customer centric solutions for Material Handling, Rail & 3PLogistics, Equipment Solutions, Earthworks & Mining, Rock Re-Handling, and Rock ReProcessing solutions.

The company have worked on some large projects across the UK including; the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Heathrow Terminal 5, the London 2012 Olympics, Manchester Airport, Crossrail, Thames Tideway Tunnel and more recently, the business is engaged on multiple sections of the HS2 project.

First established back in 1978, the company’s volumes have continually increased, and they are now handling or moving around 15 million tonnes of material per year. With the largest fleet of Fuchs material handlers in the UK, RFS recently added two unique Fuchs RHL 360F (pylon) machines to their line-up. Working closely with Blue Southern and the Fuchs application centre, the machines were custom built to the exact specifications required by RFS. This included:

• A 2.5 metre pylon and extra wide undercarriage

• Fitted with a Prolec PME500, which creates a virtual wall to stop the machines from reaching over live rail

• Shortened stick and boom to give a 12-metre reach

• Boxing ring fitted as additional safety measure when carrying out maintenance work

• 360° birds eye camera system

• High pressure filter system on the attachment pipework

• Painted in RFS custom colours

The two machines are being used to unload construction materials from trains at a railhead facility located in Oxfordshire. The 2.5 metre pylons offer an eye level view of 9.2 metres which allows the operators better visibility when unloading over the top of the high material bays. We caught up with one of the operators, Calum Harris on how he thought the machine was performing “The machine features one of the best operator environments you will find on any material handler today. The cab is very comfortable to sit in, with plenty of room. The visibility from the cab is also fantastic, even with the cab raised you can still see your tracks and surroundings. The tinted glass means that the sun is never an issue and allows me to concentrate on the job. The machines are also extremely stable, even when working at full reach they don’t move.”

Alongside the two RHL handlers, Blue Southern also supplied RFS with two special build Fuchs MHL 380Fs. The first was a 14-metre reach 380 which went into the midlands and is unloading trains for the HS2 project. The other is 20 metre reach 380, which is working within a port application down on the coast at Newhaven.

Managing Director at RFS Works, Jim Flatman offers his thoughts on the company’s recent additions: “We have a great relationship with both Blue Southern and Fuchs, working closely with the two companies for many years to ensure that our machines are configured to meet the exact needs of our customers. These two RHL 360Fs are a great example of how the Fuchs product has progressed over the years, with one of the best operator stations on any material handler currently on the market.”

Cloburn Quarry Company go mobile with Powerscreen

The Cloburn Quarry Company has earned an international reputation as Europe’s leading provider of red aggregates. Their red quarry stone complies with all relevant UK and EU specifications and have been used around the world, travelling as far as Japan and the USA.

8 Blue Mail | Autumn 2022

Cloburn’s red granite is globally acknowledged as having the best combination of colour, surface texture and strength of all red aggregates. Their product has been used in sporting surfaces, driveways and a decorative stone.

Over the last 12 months Cloburn Quarry have invested in an entire new fleet of industry leading Powerscreen mobile crushing and screening machinery from Blue Scotland. To supplement the existing static plant and help meet demand, they are now running; a Powerscreen Premiertrak 600XL jaw crusher, a Powerscreen 1300 Maxtrak cone crusher, a Powerscreen Chieftain 2100X inclined screener and a Powerscreen CT80 tracked conveyor.

Cloburn Quarry has been supplying high specification railway track ballast since 1896 and is recognised as the country’s number one supplier. The company are now using their Powerscreen crushing and screening train to produce this track ballast, whilst the undersize is sold as a type 1 product.

The full process is as follows:

• The virgin granite material is fed into the PT600XL which crushes it down, before being fed into the 1300 Maxtrak

• The 1300 Maxtrak cone crusher reduces the material size down further and then feeds into the Chieftain 2100X

• The 2100X screens the material into three sizes; 31.5-50mm (railway track ballast), 40-80mm oversize and <30mm (Type 1 product)

• The <30mm then moves onto the CT80 tracked conveyor which creates a large stock pile

The most recent addition of the new line-up was the Premiertrak 600XL, which was delivered back in May. Designed for medium and large scale operators in quarrying and demolition, the PT600XL is a high performance jaw crusher built for the toughest of applications. With a 1200mm x 820mm Terex crushing chamber, its robust construction and modern design ensures optimum performance, reliability and efficiency. The XL model features a bigger infeed hopper, offering even higher throughput levels than the standard PT600.

Quarry Manager at Cloburn, Andy Steele explains why the company chose Powerscreen for their mobile crushing and screening equipment: “We opted for the Powerscreen brand for several reasons, with the main factor being Blue Scotland’s reputation for back up and support. They are well known in the Scottish market for their excellent level of aftermarket service. We also knew that the Powerscreen machines are quality, reliable products that are built to last and Blue Scotland offered good availability on the machines that we were interested in.”

Celebrating 30 years of Blue Machinery Central

Founded by Pat McGeary in 1992, Blue Central was born out of the opportunity to purchase the former Powerscreen GB site at Appleton Thorn, Warrington, (currently the site for Blue Spares) from the parent company and take on the regional distribution for the complete range of screening equipment. Pat joined Ulster Plant Ltd (Which branded as Powerscreen in the early 70s) in 1969, starting as a workshop engineer, he progressed his career as the business grew from a local manufacturing business to a global brand. As is now, back then the company was a dynamic and innovative environment in which to work and learn about the many aspects of business, where opportunities were aplenty and those willing to pursue them had every chance to achieve success. This was true for Pat and his partners in Blue, Brian Maxwell, Austin Carey and Eugene Donnelly, who all started out on a similar path, building their respective regional distribution businesses. Over time, it was clear that by working more closely they could combine their strengths to attract additional leading brands that would help them broaden the offering of product to their customers. A key part of this strategy was to create their own brand and identity, different in name from any one supplier, but carrying on the strong character and recognition of the Powerscreen brand from where they all started. With this in mind, “Blue Machinery” was created.

2022 is the year we celebrate 30 years of business at Blue Machinery (Central) Ltd, so we wanted to share a brief reflection on where we’ve come from and our vision for the future.
10 Blue Mail | Autumn 2022
Pat McGeary from the early days at Powerscreen

They identified that the recycling industry was growing rapidly, and with no products suitable for that industry, they set about identifying the best in the business to team up with. Recognising that Doppstadt were a highly successful brand with weak coverage in the UK, the four got an introduction. After negotiations, the businesses were appointed as Doppstadt dealers within their independent regions.

In 2005, Blue diversified into waste recycling solutions, by developing specific expertise of waste recycling technologies, they could now offer bigger projects including larger, static plants and materials recycling facilities.

In 2006 they added the world renowned Pegson mobile crusher range to complement the existing mobile screens from Powerscreen. The two brands were then united under the Powerscreen name in 2009.

2011 saw Blue Machinery appointed as the new Terex Fuchs UK distributor. With Blue’s strong presence in the waste sector, adding material handlers to the offering had been part of the long-term growth strategy.

The Terex Fuchs range perfectly complemented the existing collection of premium brands, whilst enabling the planned expansion into scrap metal reprocessing and port handling. This year has seen further significant development with the addition of Doosan Infracore, MDS Trommels and leading attachment brands, Rammer, Fortress, Allu, Xcentric and Oil Quick, to the product portfolio. The integration of these new brands has been led by Pat’s two sons, Sean & Aidan. Both involved with the business from a young age, as Directors and Shareholders they now lead the business with the support of a growing and dynamic team, through a period of continued growth and transition, building on the strong foundations that Pat has developed.

The progress has been routed in the commitment to long term development, supported by investment. As Blue Central increases the focus on the development of aftersales solutions through the “Blue Care” brand, Pat continues to lead and promote with the energy and spirit that he has carried through from his earliest days, welding and operating the lathe on the shop floor at Ulster Plant.

“Over the last 30 years we have faced many challenges, strong competition, recessions etc, but in the main we made many good decisions. Throughout our existence our key strength has been a strong aftersales support. We have been fortunate enough to be able to supply some of the industry’s premium brands, however, it has always been the back up and service that has allowed us to keep a loyal customer base. The recent launch of Blue Care highlights our commitment to continuing our strong focus on service.

The last couple of years have been exciting times for the business, with the addition of Doosan to the product range and the integration of Attachments. With the recent growth of the team, we now have so many great people and I don’t think we’ve even scratched the surface in terms of what we can achieve as a business.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to our customers, staff and suppliers, past and present. We would not be here today without your faith and support over the last 30 years. Lastly, to my wife, Pamela. This journey would not have been possible without her. She seldom questioned my decisions, but always offered another view which would enable me to rethink.”

Blue help RS Skips upgrade their operation

RS Skips upgrade their waste processing capabilities with the delivery of a brand new Doppstadt Inventhor 6 Plus and Powerscreen Metrotrak.

Established in 1979 and trading under the RS Skips brand since 2005, RS Skips is a family run business operating in the North West Kent region. The company offers a full range of skip sizes and options, from 4 to 40-yard skips. They also offer grab hire, a man/van service and supply a range of materials including; MOT Type 1, building sand, sharp sand and 10mm ballast.

The company is committed to reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. This has required significant investment in plant, machinery and people to maximise the efficiency of their recycling operation.

RS Skips were previously processing multiple waste streams using one mobile machine, however they realised that they could improve their efficiency and end product by investing in two specialist machines. This led to them purchasing a Doppstadt Inventhor 6 Plus to process their C&I waste and a Powerscreen Metrotrak for their C&D waste.

Click to view the two machines in operation

The two machines were RS Skips first purchases from Blue Machinery Southern.

The Inventhor 6 sets the standards in shredding efficiency by building on the strengths of the popular DW3060, paired with the benefits of the latest shredding technology from Doppstadt. When compared to other shredders built with a twin-shaft, despite the lower nominal output, the Inventhor 6 has the same throughput but consumes less fuel.

Another feature which makes the Inventhor 6 stand out from the competition is its reverse cleaning cycle function. This is a self-cleaning feature which allows you to remove any waste that has built up around the teeth/shaft, with a click of the remote. This dramatically reduces the time required for maintenance/cleaning and also means for a safer operation, as it reduces the need to get inside the shredder to remove any waste build up.

12 Blue Mail | Autumn 2022

We spoke to Sukh Randhawa at RS Skips on why the company needed to bring in a specialist shredder and the reason for opting to go with the Inventhor 6 Plus: “The waste game is always evolving and its now important for residual waste to be shredded and sized, and we couldn’t do that as effectively with our previous machine. We were also looking to become more cost effective with our haulage and the Inventhor 6 allows us to get more material onto the artics. We brought in several slow-speed shredders on demo, however we really liked the reverse cycle self-cleaning function on the Inventhor 6. We also know that Doppstadt have a reputation of producing some of the most reliable machines in the industry.”

A few months after the Doppstadt shredder arrived, RS Skips took delivery of their brand-new jaw crusher, the Powerscreen Metrotrak. The Metrotrak is the smallest machine in Powerscreen’s jaw crusher line-up. It’s a highly compact, high performance tracked mobile crusher featuring the ‘M’ series single toggle jaw crusher. At just 12.4m in length and 2.4m in Width, the Metrotrak is ideally suited to recycling operations like RS Skips’, where space is restricted.

The new Metrotrak builds on the previously successful model with upgraded features, additional options, and slick new styling. With a hydraulically adjusted, fuel efficient direct drive chamber as standard, users benefit from an ability to quickly and easily change the size of finished product with minimal running costs.

To maximise return on investment, machine uptime requirements are at an all-time high and operators demand a machine which is easy to service and maintain.

The Metrotrak offers exceptional maintenance and access via centralised hydraulics and electrics, a newly designed bypass chute with excellent internal access and platforms.

Sukh at RS Skips explains the thought process behind purchasing the Metrotrak; “Just like with the shredders, we brought in several crushers on demo. Ultimately the decision came down to us wanting to bring in a premium brand and the level of reliability that comes with that. We know that Powerscreen are one of the best brands on the market and they were highly recommended by others. The Metrotrak turned out to be the ideal solution for us as its compact size, high throughput and flexibility offers exactly what we need for our operation. Another big reason behind opting for these two particular machines was Blue Southern’s reputation and what we have heard about their back up/support service, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them for years to come”.

J. Denham Metals boost their productivity with Fortress

J. Denham Metals took delivery of a Fortress FS95-R mobile shear. The huge 10-tonne mobile shear was fitted onto the end of a Doosan DX530LC-7 excavator supplied by Andrew Hodgson at Lloyd Ltd.

The FS95-R is one of the largest models in the Fortress range. It’s upper and lower jaws are made from 6” high-yield structural plate steel which notably reduces the need for laminations. There is a significantly enlarged pivot group which eliminates the need for auto guide and dramatically improves the performance and durability of the shear. The shear is also designed with maintenance in mind, with large removable access panels for component replacement. The addition of the Fortress FS-95R means that J. Denhams can now handle larger pieces of scrap that they wouldn’t have been able to process in the past. Company director, John Joe Denham believes that the shear is earning its keep by saving the company time and money.

DBM transform their operation with ALLU

Back in July, Lincolnshire based DBM Construction purchased an ALLU DH4-27 screening bucket. The DH4-27 is the largest screening bucket in ALLU’s D series range and has been tasked with processing thousands of tonnes of overburden and other quarry waste into reusable materials. ALLU supply a wide range of screening buckets which can be fitted to excavators, wheel loaders and skid-steers. ALLU transforms your machine into a multifunctional mobile processing plant that can screen, crush, mix, aerate, pulverise and load.

Managing Director at DBM Construction, David McMullan commented: “My first encounter with the ALLU screening bucket was on the internet, where it was working on a contract abroad and I was immediately impressed by the way it was performing. I decided to take one out on demo from Blue and I tried it for one day before realising it was exactly what we needed.”

DBM Construction are currently carrying out contract work at a quarry owned by G Webb. David went on to explain how the ALLU bucket has helped sweeten the relationship between DBM and G Webb: “When the contract came up at the quarry, we laid a demonstration of the ALLU screening bucket to the team at G Webb and they were also clearly impressed with it's performance. It has helped us build up a good relationship with them and they have now become one of our best and most valued clients. With its strong build quality, versatility and reliability, investing in ALLU has been a good move for us and has helped us expand the services we can now offer to our clients.”

Xcentric crushes tonnage expectations for AC Aggregates

AC Aggregates recently upgraded their old Xcentric crusher bucket with a brand new Xcentric XC24. The 4-tonne crushing bucket has been fitted onto the end of a 23 tonne Doosan DX225 and is certainly doing the business for the customer.

Built entirely from HARDOX 400, the Xcentric XC24 is solid, durable and high-performance crusher bucket. The Xcentric line-up consists of wide range of models and sizes suitable from 8-50 tonne excavators. Their patented crushing action, reverse crush ability and flexible material size change settings, means that it outperforms every crusher bucket on the market.

We spoke to Andy Todd, Fleet and Operations Manager at AC Aggregates, who explained the reason behind upgrading to the XC24: “We decided to stick with Xcentric because we were happy with the performance from our previous model. We opt to use a crushing bucket over a larger mobile crusher as it takes up less space in our yard, requires fewer men to operate and its perfect for the tonnage that we need to process”.

Andy has been delighted with the performance and tonnage that the XC24 is processing, “Our XC24 is absolutely flying through our material. We knew that Xcentric offered good rates of throughput, however we are currently close to touching double the tonnage that we were expecting”.

Blue work with UROC to host Health & Safety workshop

In September Blue Central sponsored their first trade body lead webinar. In collaboration with UROC, they provided a waste industry legal compliance session to staff, customers, interested parties and the wider waste sector. The session was well attended by Blue staff from across the group, customers and some new faces from the UROC membership.

The webinar began with a legal overview from Lucy Wright of Lincoln House Chambers, a seasoned health and safety lawyer with experience both prosecuting and defending criminal H&S cases. The section covered regulation and some recent cases that have gone to court.

In the latter half of the webinar, Matthew Lee, and ex HSE Inspector with several decades of experience, discussed practical compliance. Matthew, who is also a member of the Waste Industry Safety and Health Forum (WISH) then spoke about risk assessment and the importance of clear, uncomplicated documentation that can be easily digested by the workforce.

Together Lucy and Matthew covered some hard-hitting topics and provided guidance on protecting both the workforces and businesses. Jenny Watts, an Environmental Solicitor and CEO of UROC was also on hand throughout to provide her experienced direction and encourage questions from the delegates.

With the success of this first webinar and the positive feedback we have gained, we will be sure to arrange similar events in the future whether they be online webinars, on site seminars or practical workshops. H&S is something to be discussed across the industry with businesses sharing best practice and lessons learned to foster a culture of openness, in order to collectively protect our people.

The new Doosan DL550-7 Stage V wheel loader features a completely new design which provides higher performance, increased fuel efficiency and a highly improved operator environment.

Its impressive breakout force and high traction makes penetration easy and allows you to tackle the hardest of materials. The scania DC13 engine provides the power you need whilst meeting the latest environmental regulations.

The -7 series of wheel loaders also introduced Doosan’s new ‘Transparent Bucket’, this allows operators to see large rocks, construction materials, obstacles and even people in front of the machine — objects that would otherwise be obstructed from view by the bucket.

Commercial Director at Atlas Commodities, Harry Seale praised Blue Central following delivery of the four new machines: “A big thanks to Adam Langley and Blue Machinery for the prompt delivery of our latest additions to the Atlas Commodities fleet, namely two Terex Fuchs MHL 390s, an MHL 360 and a Doosan DL550 loading shovel. These machines went a long way in helping us loading our first ever UK deep sea cargo with 35,000MT of scrap metal”.
