Jordan had always loved playing sport, so when the opportunity came to study at Bishop Burton and be part of the College’s Rugby League Academy programme, he jumped at the chance.

Combining academic studies with an elite training programme, the programme offered Jordan the chance to pursue his professional sporting dream whilst studying a vocational course, should his sports career not take off.

While studying garden design at Bishop Burton, Pippa was given the chance to enter a garden into the Harrogate Flower Show – the premier horticultural show in the north. Working alongside construction students from the College, Pippa teamed up with a local charity to develop the garden.

Pippa Snowden

Award-winning garden designer

The garden, designed for those living with dementia, aimed to create a safe environment for its users by reminding them of familiar smells using scented flowers and by incorporating pathways that brought them back to the start.

His latest adventure has taken him as far as the Middle East, where he has had the opportunity to implement and co-manage a new animal encounter programme. Working with a team of professionals, he has successfully introduced a colony of King and Gentoo penguins into the U.A.E, helping to improve animal awareness across the region.

Jordan worked hard both on and off the pitch, taking full advantage of the access he had to state-of-the-art facilities and respected coaches, trainers and lecturers, and his dream became reality when he signed a professional contract with Super League team, Hull FC. A lifelong dream realised through hard work, ambition and determination.

The garden impressed the judges so much that it secured one of just three gold awards at the show. Praised for its consideration of its end users, and the quality of the building work, the garden became the highlight of the show, and following its win, it was donated to the charity that helped Pippa come up with the award-winning design. And for Pippa, the success secured a future with Hobson and Porter – a local building fi rm which now has its own landscape designer.

For anyone looking to learn on the job, an apprenticeship or traineeship could be the route to explore.

31

Both the apprenticeship and traineeship combine practical hands-on work experience, with structured classroom study to provide you with the foundations needed to explore promising careers across a range of industries.

Apprenticeships An apprenticeship is a work-based programme. If you wish to gain practical experience and training for a specific job whilst obtaining qualifications and being paid a wage, an apprenticeship could be for you. Apprenticeships may be started at any point throughout the year and can take 14-36 months to complete.

Traineeships Traineeships are an ideal opportunity if you are motivated to get a job but lack the skills and experience that employers are looking for. Traineeships last between six weeks and six months, and may lead into apprenticeships. You could be eligible if: • You are unemployed (or work less than 16 hours per week) • Motivated to work • Aged 16 to 18 and are qualified below Level Three • Aged 19 to 23 and are qualified below a full Level Two.

Added benefits All Bishop Burton College intermediate and advanced apprenticeships and traineeships include the opportunity to gain additional valuable qualifications and certificates, allowing you to demonstrate competence in a wide variety of job related tasks.

Bradley’s Story Name: Bradley Spriggs Age: 18 Course: BTEC Level Three in Sport

111

Bradley was the winner of our Sports Personality of the Year for 2014 / 15 after captaining our rugby league side to Regional and National Cup glory. His leadership helped the College pick up the accolade of Rugby League College of the Year and earned himself a professional contract at Super League club Hull FC. Bradley also made his international debut, representing the England Lionhearts. Q: What do you like about Bishop Burton College? A: The facilities have definitely played a huge role in helping the College to move forward. Without the facilities I don’t think we would have developed as players to the extent we have. Playing a high standard of rugby for the College means more scouts come along to watch so I’ve managed to be seen. The College has a great name within the rugby world so that’s really helped me get a call-up to the England Lionhearts squad. At the beginning of the year we had high standards but to get to the final was amazing, and to win it was amazing and a very proud achievement. I like the social side of the College too and everyone mixes and gets on really well. Q: What is the best thing about your course? A: This year I’ve studied the Level Three Sport course. You’re learning new things every single day and each new assignment is a challenge. The practical element of the course is something I really enjoyed and whatever we do on the field as part of the Rugby League Academy translates into our work, so the two definitely complement each other. Q: What are your hopes for the future? A: I want to keep playing rugby league professionally, hopefully represent my country again, and teach sport to other people. It’s a huge part of my life and this is what I want to do as a living so everything revolves around it.
