Viera High graduate takes unusual path to Naval Academy appointment SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Michael Brunotte recently was selected for an appointment to the Class of 2021 of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The Melbourne resident graduated from Viera High School in 2016. Brunotte, a three-sport varsity letterman for the Hawks in football, wrestling and track and field, graduated among the top 5 percent in his class, was a member of the National Honor Society and he also was a member of Mu Alpha Theta High School and the Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society. He served as a math and science tutor for his fellow students.

Brunotte was an Eagle Scout, who was a recipient of a merit scholarship from the National Eagle Scout Association. After earning the rank of Eagle, he continued his involvement in scouting by helping to form a new Boy Scouts troop for new scouts and he served as their first Senior Patrol Leader. Brunotte was a squadron commander of the Patrick Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol at Patrick Air Force Base. During his senior year at Viera High School, Brunotte received a national fouryear Naval ROTC scholarship to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach to major in aerospace engineering and minor in physics. He also was

awarded the Presidential Scholarship at Embry-Riddle which, when combined with the NROTC scholarship, amounted to a full-ride for all his college expenses. Brunotte was named to the Dean’s List during the fall semester at EmbryRiddle with a 4.0 grade point average. He was a Fourth Class Midshipman in the Naval ROTC. Despite his success at Embry-Riddle, Brunotte refused to give up his dream of attending the Naval Academy. He adhered to Commander Lawrence’s famous command of “Don’t give up the ship!’’ in reapplying while attending Embry-Riddle. After missing out on an appointment for the Class of 2020, Brunotte

Four other fields are expected to be ready in July, and another nine fields should be finished this fall, he added. Two Men and a Truck continues successful program to help mothers SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Two Men and a Truck Brevard, a Brevard County moving company, is working with Calvary Chapel Melbourne and Calvary Chapel Viera to help mothers and their families during this Mother’s Day season as part of its Movers for Moms collection drive. The fundraiser provides gifts to local women staying in community shelters this spring. For many, Mother’s Day is a joyous occasion. For others, it is a painful reminder of the difficulties many mothers face as they live in shelters because of domestic abuse or homelessness. Statistics from the Domestic Violence Resource Center report that one in every four women will experience domestic violence during their lifetime. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. This violence often triggers homelessness. Serene Harbor is a local domestic violence center for

crisis intervention. “For 25 years, we have served survivors of domestic violence right here in Brevard County, housing women, children and their pets at the center,’’ said Brenda VanAntwerp of Movers For Moms. “All services are provided free of charge and include 24-hour confidential hotline, safety planning, emergency shelter, transportation, counseling, legal advocacy and outreach to over 25,000 women and children.’’ VV For more information, call 321-726-8282 or go to their website at sereneharbor.org. This spring marks the 10th anniversary of Movers for Moms. The program now serves 39 states. It hopes to collect more than 300,000 items for moms in need across the country. For more information on Movers for Moms, call VanAntwerp at 321-2427742, go to its website at twomenandatruck.com/ moversformoms or check out its Facebook page at facebook. com.

Bolstering defensive line highlights Hawks' spring BY CARL KOTALA

“We need to secure up the D-line,” Viera coach Kevin Mays said. “That will be the goal for spring. It definitely will be a wide open competition.” Spring football began for Viera on April 24. The Hawks will play their spring game on May 24 at Heritage in a jamboree featuring Viera, Heritage and East Ridge. The three teams will each face each other for a half. While Viera will be looking to fill spots on the line and in the secondary this spring, the defense certainly won’t be lacking for playmakers.

With 15 returning starters, the Viera High football team will enter spring practice in great shape for the upcoming 2017 season. But that doesn’t mean the Hawks don’t have some holes to fill. The position with the biggest spotlight on it this spring will be the defensive line where the Hawks will not only graduate three starters in Marco Foreman, Justin Harrison and Jaylin Wilson, but three players who will all be playing in college.

Colleges expected to flock to Holy Trinity spring football BY CARL KOTALA

When you’ve got one of the most highly recruited high school football players in the country on your campus, it sure can spice up spring practice. That’s exactly what the Holy Trinity Tigers are looking at this year. Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida and Florida State, Corbin has also gotten offers from UCLA, Oregon, Ole Miss, South Carolina and LSU — to name a few. The beauty of the situation for Holy Trinity is that while all of these big-time colleges are coming to campus to watch the speedy Corbin put on a show during spring practice, there will be plenty of opportunity for other players to catch the scout’s eyes as well. And if they can catch a scout’s attention, well, that could potentially lead to their own scholarship opportunities. “That’s what I tell these guys — he’s bringing them, but you should benefit from the presence of the college coaches,” Hooks said. Corbin isn’t the only returning Tiger who was named to the all-state team last season. Sully Altman, a rising junior, was named to the Class 3A first-team all-state defense as a linebacker after recording 100 tackles, 20.5 tackles-for-loss, 10 sacks, 12 quarterback hurries and a blocked kick last season. Another veteran, Tyler Forde, should be a standout

Tigers next season. “This talent is going to be good, but we’re going to be extremely young,” Hooks said. “It will be freshman and sophomore loaded, playing an extremely difficult schedule.” Holy Trinity’s schedule will be revealed in next month’s issue of the Viera Voice. VV

Smith wins Silver Ball in Houston BY CARL KOTALA

Martha Smith had never played in the USTA National Women’s Clay Court Championships before last month. Now, the 91-year-old Satellite Beach resident is hooked and already planning to return to Houston for next year’s tournament. Smith, who said she likes to play “hit-and-giggle” tennis,

was one of two players in the tournament’s 90-year-old age bracket, which ran from March 27 to April 2 at the Houston Racquet Club. Though she did not get to bring home the championship trophy, Smith said she enjoyed everything about the tournament. She also was able to take home her very first USTA Silver Ball for finishing second. VV

Viera East Men’s Golf Association members said goodbye to longtime member Jim Benton, who died April 3. An avid golfer at the Viera East Golf Course, Benton, who was born on July 30, 1938, always played better than his handicap suggested. He had an open personality and touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with on the course. Golfing was his passion and ball hawking was his mission in life. Every game was meticulously replayed hole by hole and for anyone who would care to listen. When not golfing, he watched reruns of black

Although he and his wife Gail moved to Viera in 1993 and to the golf course in 1999, Benton never wavered in his support for the basketball team at the University of Kentucky. He continued to proudly display anything and everything about Kentucky. The Viera East Men’s Golf Association’s Ryder Cup was the highlight of the spring and it drew a large turnout. It began with the Red team captain and the Blue team captain blindly drawing an A player, B player, C player and D Player for their teams. Once the teams were drawn, the first round began with a two man versus two man scramble

format. The Red Team forged a 7½-6½ advantage. In the second round, the Blue Team prevailed 7½-6½ as the event concluded with a 14-14 tie. Roger Way, Ed Raleigh, Dale Zeigler, Robert Frazier, Craig Smith and Bruce Schwanda each won two matches for the Red Team. John Gulla, Gene Barrett, David Hill, Bill Oakley, Guy Sullivan and Wilson Butler each won two matches for the Blue Team. starting spot. The top candidates at running back will be Jarin Lewis and Andre Jones. Back to lead the group will be quarterback Tim DeMorat. After transferring to Viera last year, DeMorat stepped into the starting role at the start of last season and helped the Hawks reach the regional finals. Now entering his second year at Viera, DeMorat should be much more comfortable in the system as he prepares

to take his team through what should be another challenging season. Viera’s 2017 schedule will be revealed next month. “I expect a lot out of Tim this year,” Mays said. “He’s been around. He knows the guys. He’s not coming into a huddle with faces he doesn’t recognize. He should have a great year this year. “He’ll come into this year as the man. Hopefully, he’s progressed like we think he has.” VV

Holy Trinity teams ready to compete with state’s track elite BY CARL KOTALA

After getting off to a bit of a rocky start because of early-season injuries, the Holy Trinity girls track team is steamrolling toward what the Tigers hope will be a top-three finish at the Class 1A state meet this month. The Holy Trinity boys, meanwhile, are continuing to improve as they make their march back toward the state’s elite. “The boys team is young, and I think this year is pretty much like a proving ground,” Tigers coach Marcus Bailey said. “The next two years, you’re going to see the boys program make a big leap forward. I mean, I’m talking about back to where we were in 2012 and 2013 when we won state titles. “I’m not saying we’re going to win state titles, but we’ve got about six quality kids and we’ve got some kids coming in as freshmen that are going to be immediate contributors. I see the boys team, in the next two years, making a strong resurgence back to the top. “The girls have a shot this year, if all goes well, to be in the top three at state.” A trio of talented seniors — Giana Gayles, Lizzie Bacon and Samantha Folio — are a big reason for that. Gayles won the long jump and 100-meter hurdles at last year’s state meet and teamed with Bacon on

Holy Trinity seniors Tay Griffin, left, and Giana Gayles have high hopes for this year's state track meet, which will take place May 5 and 6 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton.

Holy Trinity’s 400-meter relay team that won its fifth consecutive state championship. This year’s lineup features Gayles, Bacon and newcomers Lauryn Gayles (Giana’s younger sister) and Adriana Menendez. Rather than feeling pressure to win a sixth consecutive state relay title, Giana Gayles referred to it more as a motivation. Three of the four — both Gayles sisters and Bacon — were dealing with minor injuries earlier this season, but have been coming on as of late. “It’s an exciting thing,” she said. “We’ve had a new team almost every year now, so every year we have to figure it out. This year, our two new legs are faster than the last two, so we have

more potential once we get comfortable with it.” Folio, meanwhile, figures to be one of the state’s top distance runners. Bacon also will compete in both hurdle events and Menendez should challenge in the 200 and 400. On the boys side, freshman Honor’ee Pound has been a standout in the 400, Sully Altman has gotten better each race in the 100 and senior Tay Griffin has been strong in the 100. Griffin is hopeful the 400 relay team of himself, Altman, Avi Sharma and Brandon Lawrence can come up big in the postseason. “Hopefully, we can get (our time) down to a 43 so we can get out of regionals and get back to state,” Griffin said. Viera High's Lance Reynolds, left, and Danice Loney are not only hoping to make it to this year's state meet on May 5 and 6 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, the two also are hoping to leave behind a work ethic for their younger teammates to follow.

As a four-year track standout at Viera High, senior Lance Reynolds always loves competing in the Cape Coast Conference meet because of how it sets up the rest of the season, particularly for his younger teammates. This year was no different. “It was a challenging meet, like it always is,” Reynolds said. “It’s the first big meet going into districts and regionals, it really opens up the eyes for everyone, shows them what they have to do to get to the next level.” At press time, the Hawks still had to get through their district and regional meets to see who will qualify for the Class 3A state meet, which is set for May 5 and 6 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton (check the Viera Voice website for updates on all postseason track results). But it’s been a good season for Viera so far under new boys coach Kerron Greaves and veteran girls coach Arlene Ferguson despite having to rely on a very young roster. “We’ve seen some progressions from our contributors, which is important, and we’ve seen

should qualify for state once again in both the shot put and discus. Other contenders for state berths are senior Sarah Smith in the high jump, freshman Chesna Wilson in the 300 hurdles and freshman Mariah Ross in the 400. VV

Summers provide opportunities for different side of learning BY CYNTHIA THOMAS

Summer learning loss or summer slide aren’t just terms for educational debate. Too often, they turn out to be true. Some students spend four to six weeks at the beginning of each school year re-learning what was

lost during the past three months. It doesn’t have to be that way. Summer is a great time to build on the knowledge learned during the academic year. It can be a time of enrichment and building on the interests of the child while creating new ones. Children joyfully embrace the

beginning of summer since it is a change in pace from the school year. The challenge for parents is how to keep them engaged in learning during this fun-filled season. Nature provides countless learning opportunities for children, who naturally want to explore those opportunities. Most children love to be outdoors, to wander about, climb trees, pick flowers or berries, to play with a dog or investigate bugs and worms. Even the simple act of taking a walk can unearth hidden treasures as the child spies a pretty bird or plays with a Roly Poly. “The land is where our roots are. The children must be taught to feel and live in harmony with the Earth.” Dr.

Maria Montessori once said. Montessori believed that putting a child in touch with the environment would feed the child’s spirit. For example, creating a butterfly garden and observing the activity within puts children in touch with their environment and creates memorable summertime experiences. Montessori schools develop an attitude of stewardship of the Earth within their students. They should enjoy the forests and meadows and leave nothing behind except a pleasant memory or two. “How often is the soul of man, especially in childhood, deprived because he is not allowed to come in contact with nature?” Montessori said.

Attending summer camps is another way for children to build on what they learned during the school year. Montessori Summer Camps create a nice balance between indoor time and time spent in the natural world believing that, as Montessori said, “Such experience is not just play, it is work he must do in order to grow up.” During summer camp, children focus on different subjects such as integrating art and creative, hands-on experiments to enhance their learning experiences. Summer camps give children an outlet to create, to be free, to choose their own level of activity, to read, run and play and to build relationships that can last a lifetime all while expanding their knowledge of the wide world around them. Viera High’s FCCLA students advance to national competition BY JULIE STURGEON

Family values are at the center of a unique national youth leadership organization at Viera High School. The Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, or FCCLA, is a student organization that promotes the growth and leadership of members while stressing the importance of the family. Carrie Humphrys, club chair, said that the FCCLA is the only national Career and Technical Student organization with family as its central focus. The organization, which was implemented in 1945, is a joint club partnering Viera High School with Space Coast Junior/Senior High School. “Our mission is to promote personal growth and development along with leadership skills through family and consumer science education,” Humphrys said. The importance of the family as part of society is stressed through character development, innovative thinking, communication, and practicality, with an emphasis on preparation. These values are addressed by club members, who work on projects and then compete in an upcoming national conference. “Our student members focus on life skills by creating projects, learning to

speak to adults and making presentations,” Humphrys said. “These are lifelong skills.” FCCLA members learn about career, personal, and societal issues faced by adults. Students must realize that as adults, they need to make a living. The FCCLA students are preparing for the real world with projects and business ideas, while addressing issues such as the environment at the local and national level. Family members are wage earners and community leaders. They are also entrepreneurs, like Damian Hosmer, a ninth grader, who won a district and state title with his Bee and Honey Business. “Damian created a 50page business proposal

which addressed startup costs, care and safety issues, a building design including emergency exits, an emergency plan, and a budget,” Humphrys said. “He even applied for a grant for his project.” Hosmer will attend this year’s National Competition along with ninth-grader Emma Scheinbart and seventh-grader Danajean Hosmer. “Emma won gold last year for her recycling and design project,” Humphrys said. “This year, she is attending as a judge and leadership program participant. “ Danajean Hosmer’s recycle and redesign project consisted of repurposing her aunt’s work suits and jewelry to recover an old chair. Other FCCLA students who qualified but will not be in attendance are junior Luke Gregorio for interior design division, and juniors Emoree Luchteen and Alexis Granchi for interior design occupational division. “We have a young club with 34 members right now,” Humphreys said. “We are trying to get the word out about FCCLA to our students.” A Fashion and Design

All Brevard County students in first grade and older can enter work in the event. The FCCLA also will conduct a garage sale April 29 to earn funds for their upcoming trip to the yearly conference. New format highlights Duran Men’s Golf Association season BY CARL KOTALA

A new format made for some exciting golf during this season’s league play for the Duran Men’s Golf Association. Rather than have one big flight with a variety of skill levels mixed into one, the format was set up this season so that players with similar handicaps would play against each other. That meant there were four flights overall this season. “It was better,” Duran head golf pro Matt Morrison said. “It was more competitive. Everyone seemed happier that they were playing against similar competition. “We had great weather. HD Dental was a major sponsor again, which entitled us to play for over $2,000 worth of prizes.” A field of more than 75 players began competing last October, earning points each week based on their order of finish That group was then trimmed to 48 players who qualified for the Chase for the Cup, which took place

over two weeks. The championship round was played at the end of March. All finalists received gift cards based on where they placed. In Flight A, Tom Bergeron and John Creighton finished tied after 18 holes, each shooting 74 with a 6 handicap for a score of 68. The two men went into a playoff that lasted three holes before Creighton emerged victorious. Joe Lentini finished third in the group, followed by John Kaier and Smike Johnson. Flight B saw John Wierda shoot a low round of 78 (with a 15 handicap) to claim the top spot. Howard Heidel was second, followed by John Pugsley and Jack Jaust. Ernie Dorling was the champion in Flight C. John Sherry came in second, while Joe Tully was third and George Stergious was fourth. Ed Facas had the low score to win Flight D. He was followed by Mark Brown, Mike Hachee and Mike Stricker. VV

Youth conservation awards lean heavily on the ability to engage others BY LINDA WIGGINS

Two students took home the first Youth Division Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards at the fourth annual event April 13 held in the Heritage Isle ballroom adjacent to the Viera Wetlands. The awards are named for a beloved nature expert who volunteered much of his time inspiring the love of nature in others and teaching them to photograph flora and fauna. “We added this division because youth and education are so important to conservation,” said Jill BlueGaines, publisher of Viera Voice, which hosts the event in memory of Corbeil. His nature column and photos were reader favorites for years. Quest Elementary student Justin Cole of Suntree won for the elementary division and homeschooled Brevard Zoo teen volunteer Delaney Farrell of Palm Bay won for the secondary/high school division. “When our first Youth Division awardee met his idol, world renowned conservationist Jane Goodall, it didn't inspire his mission. It confirmed it, fueled it, deepened it,” said Gaines, who presented Cole’s award. He pledged to her that he would start a Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots Club and did so, engaging other students to educate the community on the value of bats, raised money and awareness for the Sumatran Orangutans in Indonesia, their numbers severely threatened due to the palm oil trade, and worked on a number of other projects.

“Justin stood out with the selection committee based on his leadership and the number of community members he has reached with his public awareness campaigns. Growing a love for wildlife into action for wildlife, especially at such a young age, is truly impressive,” Gaines said. Selection committee member Amy Reaume, Conservation Manager at the Brevard Zoo and herself a past Charlie winner, presented Farrell’s award. “No one knows how her obsession with sharks started, but our older Youth Division awardee Delaney has loved them and cared about them since she was 2 years old. At age 13, she got involved in a big way reaching out to others to get them to take action, won her first grant, started her own project called Finformation to educate the public on the value of sharks, will be hosting a booth at the Orlando Science Center on Earth Day, and is organizing the annual Youth Environmental Summit in July.” Like Cole, Farrell was commended for her ability to engage others as well as her good works. “Whether you can be a little involved or a lot, there is something everyone can do to help,” Farrell said. “We're all stuck on the one planet together, so we've all got to pull together as one.” VV For more information and to view additional photos and videos, go to VieraVoice.com. Youth and working together emerged as keys to conservation of wild lands and their inhabitants at the fourth annual Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards April 13 at Heritage Isle ballroom. The locale is adjacent to the favorite place of the Master Florida Naturalist and world renowned nature photographer for whom the awards are named, the Viera Wetlands. The awards are given by previous winners of The Charlies — as they are affectionately known in conservation circles. The same year as an official Youth Division was added, awardees touched on how they became inspired in youth to make a difference in the environment. “We are now seeing folks who worked as interns and youth volunteers 20 and 30 years ago now being nominated by their mentors who themselves have received a Charlie,” said event emcee Vince Lamb, close Corbeil friend and co-founder of Preserve Brevard, which partners with Viera Voice to host the awards dinner. Charlie winner Anne Birch worked for the Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands program and called out a number of names in the capacity crowd she'd worked for, and worked with. She now is the Marine Conservation director of The Nature Conservancy. “We all need to work together to come up with

vieravoice.com

and implement solutions,” Birch said. “Experts, agencies, community leaders, a great thing about this event is that you have so many of them under one roof.” Birch was nominated and presented with her award by Dr. Leesa Souto of the Marine Resources Council. A Charlie winner last year, Souto formerly was with the EELs program and also commented how current Charlie winner Diane Barile, Council founder, inspired and mentored her. Awardee Sammy Lee McGee, park biologist at St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park, said she stepped off a bus at Yellowstone National Park and knew she'd never be happy working in a traditional office. “Kids today have a lot less free time to explore the outdoors, with so much scheduled activity,” said McGee, who was nominated for and presented with her award by previous winner Nichole Perna of the EELs program. Recognizing beauty and being thankful for it is key to preserving nature at any age, she added. Awardee Dr. Dave Breininger, lead wildlife biologist of NASA's ecological program at Kennedy Space Center, used the spotlight to forward action on the EELs program, which was established by voters in 1990 and now manages more than 20 large preserves. “We need to work together to establish a long-range financial plan for the

management of these lands and to ensure ongoing biodiversity of species and habitat.” While recent environmental incidents underscored the severity of the need for conservation, so too did hope shine through, as voters responded to the need for a clean up of the Indian River Lagoon with a half-cent sales tax last fall.

“We've turned a corner in this region and there is a lot of political support to help the Lagoon,” said awardee Jim Waymer, environmental reporter for Florida Today since 2000. He was presented his award by 2014 Charlie winner Dr. Duane De Freese, who since was named executive director of the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program.

“But what you do in your own backyard is critical,” he added, such as properly maintaining a septic tank, minimizing fertilizer and pesticide use and in all other ways reducing what can wind up in the water. VIERA VOICE courtesy of Phil Sunkel, U.S. Air Force

Debbie Wilson, daughter of Jon Myhre; U.S. Rep. Bill Posey; Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, 45th Space Wing commander; retired Navy Rear Admiral Samuel Cox, Naval history and heritage command director and curator; retired Army Capt. Jon Myhre, Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale historical association and museum member; and Capt. John Sager, Naval Ordnance Test Unit commander, unveil the Naval Air Station Banana River Monument during a ceremony April 11 at Patrick Air Force Base. The 45th Space Wing hosted a dedication ceremony for a Martin PBM-5 Mariner seaplane lost during the search for Flight 19 in 1945.

Near an old seaplane ramp at Patrick Air Force Base where a Martin PBM5 Mariner took off in 1945 to search for five missing torpedo bombers and instead became part of one of aviation’s most enduring mysteries, U.S. Rep. Bill Posey spoke of their dedication and sacrifice. “They took off inspired and intended to return with their lost comrades,” Posey (R-Rockledge) told military officials and civilians April 11 during the unveiling of a bronze plaque and granite monument in memory of the 13 crewmen who disappeared on Dec. 5, 1945. “But as we know, unfortunately, they never made it. Today, we honor their lives.” “Training 49” was one of two twin-engine seaplanes dispatched from Naval Air Station Banana River, the previous name of Patrick from 1940 to 1947, to look for 14 crewmen in five Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bombers that had left Fort Lauderdale on a training run over the Bahamas. The seaplane few for about a half-hour above the Atlantic, then was never heard from again. The loss of the six military planes and their 27 crewmen led to one of the biggest peacetime air, sea and searches in U.S. history. But no trace of the men or planes was ever found. Their disappearance spawned the legend of the “Bermuda Triangle,” a region of the Atlantic between Miami, Bermuda and Puerto

Rico where many ships and planes reportedly have vanished under strange circumstances. A Navy investigation and report later determined the Flight 19 airmen apparently became disoriented and ditched in rough seas after running out of fuel. The report also concluded that the Mariner exploded in midair. The plaque is inscribed with the names of the 13 crewmen, but also honors all personnel who served at the naval air station, which was renamed Patrick Air Force Base in 1950. The memorial was presented by the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale Historical Association and Naval Air Museum Fort Lauderdale members. The museum has a Flight 19 display. Sebastian resident Jon Myhre, a researcher of the “Lost Patrol” and a lifetime member of the historical association, helped lead the effort to build the monument. He paid for its granite base and split the cost of the plaque with the association. “I’ll treasure this day always,” Myhre said after the ceremony. Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, commander of the 45th Space Wing at Patrick, said Training 49’s mission mirrored that of the 920th Rescue Wing, which is stationed at the base. “And much like the crew of Training 49, when the call comes in, they don’t ask why,” Monteith said. “They only ask where.” VV

achieve excellence in the ways they are gifted.” Blue-Gaines recounted how she started Senior Life newspaper 20 years ago this June as a one-woman effort with little more than a car, a phone, and a tiny office she rarely spent time in because she also had to sell the ads she would later design, collect monies due, get articles written and everything else in between. “You have to be willing to give it your all to succeed in a business,” Blue-Gaines said. “I am very fortunate along the way to have built a team that also is willing to jump in as needed whenever I have taken on a new event or project. So surrounding yourself with capable individuals also is key.” Hurst said she nominated Blue-Gaines because it was an acknowledgment whose time had come. “Jill may be an unknown gem to all but those in her close circle who see all the amazing things she does, the ways she builds up others and gives so much of herself and her resources to help others without asking for the spotlight in return for it, and in fact avoiding that spotlight,” Hurst said. “I'm beyond thrilled that the WE committee agreed with me that it was time to put that secret to rest.” VV

Ophthalmologist Dr. Nick Pefkaros has established a private practice in Titusville with an objective to grow and cater more fully to his new and established patients by providing quality health care. “Since I donned my white coat 15 years ago, I have always dreamed of my own practice,” Pefkaros said. “I think of my patients as my extended family and want them treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. For the years I have worked as an employee for other medical practices, I have been very limited as to what I can do to achieve my goals of offering the highest quality health care possible. As a practice owner/ operator, I can and will move this practice in that direction. “I have the control of how my staff is compensated and also can control the way the practice is run,” Pefkaros said of his Space Coast Ophthalmology office. “They (staff) are extensions of me and deserve much of the accolades we receive. They also deserve a professional working environment and higher salaries. We are a team and in a team the sum is much greater than the individual parts.” “I study very hard to keep up to date on the newest medical practices and not rely on practices taught to me in medical school decades ago,” Pefkaros said. “I do this to bring the 21st century medical care to our community and I know my patients appreciate it.” Pefkaros performed his residency in ophthalmology at Wills Hospital after graduating

from Jefferson Medical College. Both are located in Philadelphia. As chief of ophthalmology at Irwin Army Community Hospital at Fort Riley, Kan., where he held the rank of major, Pefkaros performed thousands of refractive and cataract surgeries. He also is certified in using laser in surgical procedures, has performed a high volume of retina medical procedures and performs lid, lacrimal, muscle and glaucoma surgeries. “The fear of losing vision is real and scary,” Pefkaros said. “One of the main reasons I went into ophthalmology is the realization of how dependent we are on the sense of sight. I know we make a difference every day in preserving sight for our county and look forward to working with more members of our community.” An optician is on staff along with seven other employees at Space Coast Ophthalmology, 1832 Garden St., Titusville. Astronaut speaks out to warn us about our fragile planet And there it was. The first protest made in space. The Miami Herald documented the journey of Aphrodite 1, a weather balloon launched to about 90,000 feet by the Autonomous Space Agency Network (ASAN). According to the article, Aphrodite 1 carried “a GPS sensor, a camera and a message for President Trump.” The controversial message was a reference to a quote from Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, who was the sixth person to walk on the moon: "You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion

to do something about it.’’ That quote embodied the experience that astronauts have when looking down to Earth from space; an unforgettable view that triggers a general shift in perspective, the overview effect. The term coined by Frank White, author of “The Overview Effect’’ and co-

divisions are. As White explained, “we are in space[, …] all of us are astronauts, members of the crew of spaceship Earth, and the time has come to realize that this is so.” The time has come to protect our planet, our home, our mother Earth and accept nothing less than that. The time has come to stop putting profit first and humanity last. The time is now. Time to protect, build, and carefully mitigate, not deliberately destroy. We need to rethink our actions, take a step back, look at the big picture, and ask ourselves: Are our representatives aligned with our views? Are they doing what they can to protect our world, our best interest, and safeguard our future? A group called Speak Out

Brevard (speakoutbrevard. com) is pressing our locals to answer those kinds of questions, voice their answers, and influence the direction our government is taking us. Their mission is to “work with local community members to create social awareness regarding civil liberties, education and the environment through activism, and to promote equality and social justice.” The group scheduled a “Town Hall Meeting at the Viera High School Auditorium to discuss the issues relevant to our Congressional District” and invited Congressman Bill Posey, Tallahassee Mayor and 2018 Gubernatorial Candidate Andrew Gillum and a panel to discuss topics such as education, reproductive rights, the environment and health care. The meeting was happening at the time of this writing and I can only hope the outcome was positive because, remember, we are all in this together. We are all astronauts who should be working hand in hand to the sustainable advancement of mankind. Mother Earth is counting on that and so are we. VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@3RsAndBeyond.org.

cover that suggested amount were supplemented by Cinca’s own Team Nina charity, which raised $14,300 during a heart walk last September. That money was donated to “Who We Play For.” “It totally doesn’t go through people’s minds as the No 1 killer of student athletes,” Cinca said of SCA. “It’s very underrated. I felt like it would be a good thing to bring to people’s attention and kind of put it out there.” Diagnosed with Restrictive Cardiomyopathy following a wellness checkup at age 7, Cinca was looking for a way to help others. Though she had previously donated to a national foundation, she came upon “Who We Play For,” which is billed as the largest heart-screening non-profit in the country. The group started in Brevard County following the death of Cocoa Beach High student-athlete Rafe Maccarone. Its mission is

321-213-5751

to “significantly reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac arrest in student athletes by providing affordable electrocardiograms (ECGs).” “After (my) transplant, I wanted to find a new organization that I felt more connected to,” said Cinca, who briefly attended Cocoa Beach before coming to Holy Trinity. “That’s what really hit me. I was like, ‘Wow, that could happen to anyone. It could happen to people at my school.’ I think that’s why I wanted to help them out.” It was Cinca who came to Holy Trinity athletic director Scott Crockett with the idea of bringing “Who We Play For” on campus to do heart screenings. That led to a skype interview with the organization. “I pretty much let her do the talking and she sold it like that,” Crockett said. “I would have bought anything from her that day. She’s that good.” Crockett said 115 students took part in the heart screenings this year with the majority of students covering — and in many cases exceeding — the suggested donation. The plan is for it to become an annual event. There also are plans for a third Nina’s Heart Walk in October, where people will not only be able to help raise money for a worthy cause, but they can also purchase Team Nina merchandise such as sunglasses, hand sanitizer, lip balm, shirts, bags, bracelets and stickers. She also has the understanding that what she is doing now to help her classmates is something that will live on at the school after she graduates. “It would be a nice legacy to leave,” she said. “Especially (knowing) that I started it. If it keeps on going without me that would be awesome.” VV

Suntree/Viera Hundred Acre Hollow preserve makes its debut BY KATIE PARSONS

The Brevard Countyowned Hundred Acre Hollows preserve made its debut with a “soft opening” April 9. The Suntree/Vieraarea 114-acre landlocked tract once slated for single family home development is now home only to hundreds of gopher tortoises and other wildlife. The event capped months of work by area residents following a shocking reversal of fortune July 7 when Brevard County Commissioners, who admittedly arrived at a public hearing prepared to approve a builder's plan to develop the land, instead heeded requests of hundreds of residents who showed up to fight it in favor of preserving the land. “We had a soft opening without much promotion because we weren't sure how we could accommodate

behind upscale custom homes. “There really is no accommodation for parking at any of the access points to the area, and we are just hoping residents will remember what the alternative could have been and tolerate the public coming to enjoy nature,” Unrath said, referring to the hundreds of daily additional

Hundred Acre Hollow traffic trips that would have been added to tiny local streets and feeder routes to Wickham Road and Viera Boulevard that are already at capacity, not to mention years of truck traffic for construction. One condition of approval is that the area be open to all of Brevard County and not merely an amenity to the surrounding communities, which include Suntree neighborhoods to the south along Spyglass Hill Road, one of three access points at the north end of Devons Glen; Springs of Suntree, which

continued from page 31

hosts the official entrance hidden between two houses along Rock Springs Drive; and Capron Ridge off Viera Boulevard, the entry point a platted bicycle trail at the south end of the community. Unrath and other residents formed a nonprofit entity called Hundred Acre Hollows, Inc. Oct. 15 that could contract with the county. It is led by a board made up of residents from the surrounding communities. The group inked a lease with the county Nov. 15 for $10 a year for five years, renewable 10 times.

VIERA VOICE Val Alm

This juvenile gopher tortoise made an appearance on opening day of Hidden Acre Hollows April 9.

“Though the lease currently has an end date, we want it known that this is actually a permanent arrangement so we can successfully apply for funds to improve the area. We have some of the volunteers we will need, but it takes money to properly take out invasive plants and grasses, and we want to put in benches and other features so everyone can enjoy it, so youngsters can come learn about nature and how important it is to them. We will use the location to help teach them STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education, even history, as this specific area is significant.” The area's most recent use was to polish reclaimed water. The former plant was demolished when the South Central Wastewater Plant was built in Viera at the west end of Wickham Road. The construction of cells is similar to the Viera Wetlands but the cell beds are dry. For more information, go to the Hundred Acre Hollows Inc. page on Facebook or call Capron Ridge resident and board member Bert Alm at 310-738-2894 or Unrath at 321-223-9521. VV

Antlers, horns and tusks are essential animal appendages. They enable dominance, defense, courtship displays, foraging or moving objects. In the deer family (cervids) — deer, caribou (reindeer), elk, and moose — nature provides antlers (racks). Pairs of bony, branched, frontal-skull outgrowths appear in most males, but female reindeer (caribou) also are equipped. Most impressive are moose antlers which weigh up to 40 pounds; these flattened antlers seemingly enhance hearing. Due to castration, domesticated sleighpulling reindeer exhibit antlers similar to females. Incidentally, other female species with high testosterone levels occasionally develop antlers. Yearly, antlers are grown and shed. The growth precedes the rut (breeding season in the fall). Vascular skin, namely velvet, covers and nourishes the expanding racks. When antlers reach full size, velvet dies — in part removed as the animal rubs against vegetation which stains the antlers into a wooden look. The mature antler is dead bone. In the prime years, the rack annually grows larger but decreases in old age. After the rut, antlers are shed from late autumn to summer depending on variables, such as location and species. Expectant female reindeer shed later because antlers offer protection and are useful to scrape snow to uncover nourishing vegetation. Discarded racks provide calcium for small mammals in the wild. Horns occur in bovids, including sheep, goat, bison and domesticated cattle. In many species, only males possess horns. However, large conspicuous females need them for combat. Some smaller females are hornless since they hide to avoid altercations. From the frontals, horns protrude typically in a pair of a core of live bone, with a keratinous sheath, similar to fingernails. Curved or spiraled, horns often display ridges and fluting. Basically permanent, they ordinarily grow an entire lifetime. Yet, the pronghorn, a distant cervid and bovid relative, is the only animal to flaunt branched horns (not antlers) and to shed and regrow its horn sheath yearly. To avoid injury, domesticated cattle are polled (dehorned) through breeding or by man.

Charlotte’s WebSpinning Tales Charlotte A. Corbeil

Haiku from Hailey Scalia, 9 Spring is here — antlers Winter comes, antlers fall off Moose antler seasons

The polled trait is more prevalent in beef breeds. Therefore, dairy cows are commonly dehorned around a week old. Horn-like growths occur in humans. Cutaneous (relating to the skin) horns are common in the elderly; they often grow in sunexposed areas, like the face and hands. Unique in animals is the male Jackson’s chameleon with its three quasi horns, resembling a triceratops. Tusks produce ivory and appear in such mammals as the walrus, warthog, wild pig and elephant. Normally, both sexes have tusks, but the males’ are larger. They are generally in pairs (but not always) and mostly curved, elongated, continuously-growing canine teeth. In elephants, they are overgrown incisors. Deer ancestors were small and displayed tusks as well as antlers. Today, tusks still bedeck some deer. The male water deer has prominent tusks and lacks antlers, and the male muntjac deer has visible tusks and short antlers. Supposedly, elks have remnants of tusks. Good or bad, utilization of animal extensions endures. Antlers hang as trophies or chandeliers, but they also are used in research. Conceivably, studies in the regeneration of antlers will lead to restoration of damaged human nerves. Horns were notably used by primitive people for tools. They are still in demand for products, such as china, fertilizer, or shofars — ancient Hebrew musical instruments from rams’ horns. But poaching elephants to obtain tusks for ivory is endangering this mammal. Appropriately, the piano industry mainly discontinued ivory keys after 1970. Hopefully, animal conservation will prosper and only thriving species will be pursued and in selected seasons.VV

County finds a way to put in Suntree traffic light BY LINDA WIGGINS

Suntree resident Tony D'Alessandro breathed a sigh of relief the moment he found out. Construction has begun on a traffic light on Wickham Road out front of his Eagle's Landing community at and Forest Lake Drive. His wife, Marie, is one of the many residents from communities on both sides of Wickham Road to be involved in crashes at the location, a number of them deadly. “It has got so bad, you hear a terrible crash, and you run to the entrance to make sure it is not your loved one or a neighbor. We have had as many as three in a week, tying up traffic sometimes for hours until it gets resolved. This is such a relief, you have no idea.” The intersection is near Advent Lutheran Church on the north side of Wickham Road and the Publix shopping

plaza to the southwest. A request by area residents resulted in Brevard County commission approval of the light in July, 2014, and design approval in March, 2015. Bids were due by Sept. 23, 2016 but neither of two submissions was accepted by the Brevard County traffic planning department. It was anticipated that the project would have to go back out to bid, which could have added another year to the timeline. Director of Brevard County Public Works John Denninghoff worked with Suntree Master Homeowners Association to explore alternatives and found a way to move forward immediately. There will be no suspended light box at the new intersection, but rather signal light panels will be fixed to long mast-arms over the road that angle out from a pole installed in the

Similar new lights were recently installed along North Wickham Road in Viera at the intersection of Interstate 95 and along Lake Andrew Drive and Stadium Parkway.

The intersection will require four arms, one over Forest Lake Drive, one over Golden Eagle Court, and one each over the west- and eastbound lanes of Wickham Road. The project entails

extensive utility coordination to ensure there are no conflicts with the proposed mast-arm locations. For more information, contact Public Works/ Finance at 321-617-7202.
