Have you ever wondered about the difference between a hawk and a falcon? Do all owls hunt at night?

These topics and many more will be discussed in lectures at the festival, as well as the relationships between birds of prey or raptors and humans during the course of history.

Those who attend the festival will be able to photograph hawks, falcons and owls displayed at the festival. In the lectures, educators/faclconers will explain how these birds are vital to a healthy and functional ecosystem.

“The Flight of the Raptor” exhibit will be sponsored by the Viera Community Institute and The Viera Company for the Viera Wetlands Nature Festival.

The Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands at Viera are a quiet and solitary place to enjoy some of Brevard County's wildlife. It's one of the hidden gems in the county at the west end of North Wickham Road on 3658 Charlie Corbeil Way in Viera.

During the festival, various scientists and nature experts will conduct tours and conduct classes.

The tours and classes

are free, but donations are welcome. The suggested donation is $25. There is no admittance fee for the festival.

Organizers of the two-day event hope to ensure the longevity of the wetlands experience for generations to come.

Parking for both days will be available along Wickham Road near the entrance to the wetlands. A variety of refreshment options will be available from local food trucks from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Chris Koeppel will conduct a Sunrise Birding Tour on both days. It will begin at 6:30 a.m. and participants should check in at 6:15 a.m.

Koeppel is a member of Brevard County’s Natural Resources Management Department. The biologist and conservationist has been an avid birder for 35 years.

Raleigh Berry, a senior environmental scientist with Brevard County’s Natural Resources Management Department, is the current environmental land manager for the Viera Wetlands. Berry is the organizer of this year’s nature tours and workshops.

Schools around Brevard County are filled with dedicated and talented musicians who often go unrecognized unless they are performing publicly in concerts, theatrical events or before sporting events for their rendition of the “The Star Spangled Banner.’’

Music on the Hill is a monthly program featuring local musical prodigies sponsored by the Creative Arts Foundation of Brevard.

The children and young adults play a wide array of musical instruments — some well known and others a bit esoteric.

Eliana Berrean, 18, has been taking classical voice training for nearly 10 years.

Her first stage performance at age 9, was “An Evening with Mark Baker” at the Cocoa Village Playhouse.

Since then, she has performed in many concerts, including performances with the Space Coast Pops and the Melbourne Municipal Band.

She was a finalist twice in Brevard’s Got Music Talent, and a regular performer at Music on the Hill concerts.

She has participated in eight productions at the VIERA MEANS Cocoa Village Playhouse including starring as Hodel NETWORKING GROUP in “Fiddler on the Roof” Dana Alward and Eliza Doolittle in “My Dana Alward, 17, is a junior Fair Lady.” Her hopes are to pursue a career in operatic at Satellite High School. She is the principal clarinetist for performance, and eventually audition for the Metropolitan her school's Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Orchestra, as Opera.

Michael Liamkin, 16, was

born in Cocoa Beach. He started piano lessons at the age of 8 from Professor of Piano Pervin Muradov. Her amazing talent for teaching inspired Liamkin to keep playing and be as good as he is now. He has performed in many piano recitals and fundraising concerts, as well as participating in Peskanov’s Piano Olympics. Liamkin was one of the finalists in the 17th annual Brevard's Young Performing Artist Competition in 2013 and Brevard's Got Music Talent Competition at the Henegar Center in 2014. In 2015, he performed at the Benefit Gala concert for ''Music education and Autism'' in Carnegie Hall in New York.

He is currently a student at West Shore Junior/Senior High School. He also loves mathematics and plans to become a computer engineer.

Janet Lu, 17, a violinist, started playing the piano at 7 then the violin when she was 11. Today, Lu focuses on the violin with her private teacher Carey Moorman of Melbourne. She is the principal second violinist in West Shore Junior/Senior High School’s Chamber Orchestra, which played in the National Orchestra Festival in 2016 as well as the Associate Concertmaster in Creative Young Artists Youth Orchestra. In addition, Lu is a winner of the 2017 and 2018 Creative Young Artists Concerto Competition. She has made All-County and All-State several times. In her free time, she swims, plays tennis, sings and paints.

Got Music Talent in 2015 and 2017. She participated in multiple “Music on the Hill” fundraising programs, including a Fundraiser Concert to support the “Express Yourself through Music” at Carnegie Hall.

Zhao loves ballet and has performed in the annual Nutcracker shows with Space Coast Ballet Company for the past six years. She also plays cello in the school orchestra.

Zhao is a 10th grader at Satellite High School.

Isaac Moorman, 16, is a pianist and cellist who attends Satellite High School.

Born in Malaysia and raised in the United States, he started playing the piano at the age of 4. At 6, Moorman earned second place at the Sonatina-Sonata Competition at St. Petersburg College in Florida. At 9, he earned an Honorable Prize at the Young Artist Competition, Space Coast Pops, Florida. In 2011, he participated in The Washington International Piano Festival. He was selected to perform at the Kennedy Center through

audition during the festival.

In the summer of 2012, he performed at a benefit concert at the University of Science in Penang.

Moorman performs with the Space Coast Symphony and chamber music with the Quartet Movement, an organization promoting music education. During his free time, he mentors young cellists at Delaura Middle school. He plans to study cello performance after graduating in 2019.

Nailah Clarke, 12, has been playing the piano since she was 4. While classical piano is her first love, Clarke also enjoys improvising and experimenting with other styles, composing, singing and playing her ukulele. She aspires to someday conduct orchestras and write scores for movies. She lives in Melbourne, is homeschooled and studies piano with Irina Wolynez.

New rabbi takes unusual path to role at Temple Beth Sholom

Temple Beth Sholom’s new rabbi wants to change the future of Judaism in Brevard, starting with a simple invitation to join in fellowship.

Rabbi Craig Mayers, who prefers the title of Rabbi Craig, offers a warm invitation to the residents of Brevard to enjoy the friendly fellowship at Temple Beth Sholom. A conservative, loving and egalitarian congregation, the temple has maintained its forwardthinking philosophy since the 1950s.

“Judaism is a very community-based religion,” Mayers said. “It’s hard to be Jewish by yourself.”

Mayers is not new to Temple Beth Sholom, having been a member for 16 years.

For Mayers, the journey to becoming a rabbi started from within the very temple for which he now serves, which is a bit unorthodox.

Mayers’ leadership story starts about 16 years ago in 2002, when Mayers and his family decided to escape New York’s harsh winters and seek the warmth of the Florida sunshine. An online computer business allowed Mayers, his wife and their three sons to move to Viera, where they soon joined Temple Beth Sholom.

Rabbi Craig Mayers of Temple Beth Sholom became a rabbi through a unique program specializing in second-career rabbis.

temple life through teaching, tutoring, volunteering and overseeing the Bar Mitzvah of his three sons at Beth Sholom. His rich experience in pastoral care solidified his ties to the temple.

Meanwhile, Beth Sholom had been without a rabbi for some time.

It was during the temple’s second national rabbi search that Mayers was urged by some members to apply for the position. But first, he needed to catch up on his religious education. He was able to do this when the opportunity for online training became available.

“It wasn’t Rabbi 101,” Mayers said of the master’s type of program he enrolled in. “It was a school specializing in second-career rabbis. They assumed we had the basics already.”

The training was rigorous, and Mayers is not yet finished. But he was able to apply and was ultimately selected for the position.

After he was initially rejected for the job, Mayers composed a 15-page proposal which included an “out” after his first year as rabbi for the temple. His friendly, compassionate personality along with his years of service made him the first choice among many qualified applicants.

“You can make up gaps

in education, but you can’t make up gaps in character,” Mayers said. “The temple knew me; they knew I had given my time, energy and love.”

Now that Mayers has begun his new job, he plans to engage the Jewish community in new ways.

Yearly campouts at the temple, service under the stars and the weekly Saturday Bagels, Lox and Torah (BLT) breakfast and discussion prior to the 10 a.m. services are just some of the offerings.

Spirituality, education and fellowship are all offered at Temple Beth Sholom.

Mayers wants to reach out to the unaffiliated Brevard Jews, which he estimates to be about 80 percent, in unprecedented ways.

“Forget what you know about us,” Mayers said. “We are coming out of our shell.

You may be missing out on a lot of great programming that would be relevant in your life.”

Beyond that, Mayers said he wants to start having Sunday afternoon baseball games with other houses of worship, such as the Greek Orthodox church that shares a large campus with the temple.

Viera girl stars in “The Waitress” on Broadway Tour

Some people are just born for the spotlight — and it’s becoming very clear that 5-year-old Ella Grace Helton of Viera is one of them.

Ella Grace made her Broadway show debut in March, starring as Lulu in “The Waitress” when it stopped on tour at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando.

The adults of the Broadway company tour the country, but the role of Lulu is cast in each city where the performers stop. Ella Grace auditioned for the role locally and landed it.

She starred in the speaking role in four of the eight performances, splitting the responsibility with an Orlando girl.

"Ella couldn't wait to get on stage. She was jumping up and down when she was done and talked about how much she loved the cast and didn't want to leave them,” said Lee Nessel, Ella Grace’s mother. “This must be what it feels like when you're born to do something.

I'm in awe of this 30-pound pixie."

Holy Trinity lacrosse teams have experience, talent

They’ve both got some tough challenges ahead of them to be sure, but the Holy Trinity boys and girls lacrosse teams both have a chance to do something special this season.

Combining a mixture of experience and strong offensive attacks, both Tiger teams have a chance to contend for district titles.

Holy Trinity’s girls, for example, return all of their field players from last season — including top goal scorer Anne Kelly — which should make the Tigers a handful to deal with.

“I think this year we have the potential to be more solidified because last year the beginning of the

season was kind of new for everyone,” Kelly said. “This is our second year with more returners, so we have the capacity to build upon last year even more instead of working out the kinks.”

Other top players for the Tigers this season include midfielders Ramsey Barrows, Hannah Gunderson and Olivia McHenry. The team also added a transfer student, Kyla Cavin, who could have a big impact.

While Sebastian River is the team to beat in the district, any team that has a player such as Kelly, who scored more than 100 goals last year, has to be a contender.

Holy Trinity coach Bret Barringer praised Kelly, who transferred to the school from Pennsylvania last year, not

only for her play on the field, but for her willingness to help her teammates.

“She’s an amazing player,” Barringer said. “I’ve been around this game for 40 years and … she is one of the top five kids at her age I’ve ever seen – and I’ve seen some (great) kids at her age play.

“She can play with just about anybody. I love her. She makes me look good.”

Like the girls, Holy Trinity’s boys team will face a big challenge from perennial district powerhouse Melbourne Central Catholic.

But the Tigers have a veteran group that should be better on the attack this season.

“Last year, we graduated a lot of our defense, so our defense is definitely weaker,” senior Josh Knight said.

“But our offense is definitely stronger than last year, I would say.

“We’ve got a lot of outside shooters.”

With only 16 players, the Tigers won’t have a lot of subs. But they do have plenty of experience with players such as Knight, Ethan Leary, Jack Ganiban and Guillermo Marr. Goalie John Mercado also has been solid this season and the young defense is improving.

“I’m hoping this is the year we can hang a banner in the gym,” boys coach Mike Leary said. “I really believe that if we play well, and things go our way, we can do it. But you’ve always got MCC to worry about. They always come to play.” V V

Talented Tigers eager to set tone this spring

The Holy Trinity Tigers plan to use spring football practice to set a tone for the 2018 season.

A tone that should make all of their 2018 opponents a little wary.

After all, how many teams — especially at a small school such as Holy Trinity — can boast having five returning players with a college scholarship offer?

“We only have 21 players,” Tigers coach Nate Hooks Jr. said. “That’s a lot of guys (who have offers). We’ve got schools in the county with 50, 80, 100 players in their program and they don’t have that.

“My focus is to get these guys offers because it changes their lives.”

Of those five, only linebacker Sullivan Altman (Keiser University) and defensive back Lino Odenat (Keiser) will be seniors next season.

Spring football promises to an exciting time for the Viera High Hawks this year.

Not only is there a new head coach, but there also will be an opportunity for a lot of young players to make their case for filling a vital role next season.

Derek Smith, who moved up from defensive coordinator to head coach when Kevin Mays left to become the athletic director at Tohopekaliga High, is hardly a stranger to the Hawks.

In fact, the only big changes Viera players can expect when spring practice opens on April 23 will be adjusting to an offensive staff that will now have Mike Degory serving as offensive coordinator.

“It’s not a new offense, but just transitioning with the new offensive staff, making sure we continue to click offensively like we have in the past (will be the biggest things to accomplish this spring),” Smith said.

A new Viera East Men’s Golf Association champion has been crowned following an exciting playoff in the VEMA Club Championship.

Four-time champion Jim Robinson and newcomer Tom Bergeron finished tied after 18 holes.

Bergeron then prevailed in a playoff to become the VEMA Golf Champion for 2018.

The field was one of the strongest with 2017 VEMA champion Guy Sullivan, Robinson, Tim Brown and Bergeron reaching the final round after the field was whittled to four players.

In the usual weekly competition held on March 1, tournament director Mike Schmitt chose an individual flighted event using Stableford scoring. Points were awarded for bogeys,

pars, birdies and eagles.

Four flights were formed with almost 60 players in the field.

Bob Urban, Robinson and Fred Bogle tied for first in the first flight.

Freddy Baltazar, Jim Donnelly and Gerry Adams tied for first in the second flight.

In the third flight, Tony Hines, Tom Howell and Larry Henris tied for first.

James Ward, Mike Hachee and Bob David tied for first in the fourth flight.

Ward on No. 4, Peter Maloney on No. 7, Dick May on No. 13 and Paul Winter on No. 16 were closest-to-the-pin.

Holy Trinity tennis teams will be state contenders

The Holy Trinity tennis program is looking to make a little history … again.

Last year, the girls team reached the state tournament for the first time in school history. This year, the boys are hoping to do the same.

And they have the team to do it.

“I feel confident we’ll do well in districts, probably win, and then we could do well in the regionals as well, and then, hopefully, get both teams to state this year,” Tigers coach Mark Harrison said.

“Our girls team went to state last year, which was a huge accomplishment.”

Top singles player Morgan McCarthy, now an eighth grader, is back to lead the Tigers, along with junior Ashleigh Kutryb in the No. 2 spot. Seventh-grader Carly McNatt plays at No. 3 singles for Holy Trinity while the No. 4 to No. 7 spots are occupied by junior Karina Popwycz, eighth-grader Julia McNatt, sophomore Anjani Epasinghe and senior Seneka Epasinghe.

Other key contributors for the girls team are junior Caroline Dixon, seventh-

“They’re both tournament players,” Harrison said.

“Francisco has been ranked as high as 20 in the state in the boys 16s and he just turned 17. Morgan is one of the top players in the girls 14s and the country. She just had a big win on the ITF (Juniors Tour).

She beat a girl that was top 250 on the ITF. “We’ve got those two.

Hopefully, Francisco will lead us into the state tournament.”

Expectations are high for both the Viera High boys and girls lacrosse teams this season.

And for Viera’s girls team, that feeling is a little new.

“Last year, it was like, ‘Do what you can,’ ” girls coach Nick Bigerton said with a laugh. “Now, it’s like ‘let’s see if you can do what you did last year, if not better.’ ” The Hawks made a splash last year, winning their first district title by beating Rockledge in the title game.

Viera is a contender once again this season, with a team led by Tristen Chang, Grace Blythe, Micki Pippett, Brianna

Whereas last year’s team only had 28 healthy players to field two teams, the Hawks have gotten an infusion of young talent this season. Their numbers have swelled to 44 in the program, including 18 freshmen.

“I have a lot of players (now),” Bigerton said. “Some are really experienced.

They’ve been playing the game since fifth grade. Some are brand new to the sport.

They may be athletes, but they’ve never played athletics with a lacrosse stick and a ball in their hands.

“We’re trying to maintain that balance of developing new players while also kind of crafting and sharpening the ones that have been around for a little bit.”

Although Viera faces a big challenge in Edgewood, the Hawks believe they’re more versatile offensively this year than they were during their championship run.

“We have great midfielders and awesome attackmen,” Blythe said. “We all can shoot,

too. Last year, there were maybe five of us that could shoot. Now, it’s much more even.”

It only takes a few minutes of watching the Viera boys team to realize that not only can the Hawks shoot, they’ve also got some wicked speed, and that can only lead to more scoring opportunities.

“They’re very fast,” Viera boys coach Charlie Crawford said. “We have a couple of good face-off guys. They’re really quick coming down the field on the fast break. The defense is pretty solid. They need to stop ball watching, but other than that, they’re doing pretty good.”

The Hawks certainly have a

talented roster with offensive standouts Nate DePlancke, Jared Weiss, Nick Rodriguez and Dylan Parrilla. Goalie Nick Rossi, Tyler Bartlett, Joe Altieri and Parrilla are the team captains. And Viera also has five impact freshmen, including starters Bryce Norton, Gavin Wessel and Weiss.

“The freshmen have helped out a lot,” Parrilla said.

“They’ve definitely shown what they’ve got.”

That has the Hawks thinking about a deep postseason run.

“I think we’re capable of making it far this year — districts, a good chance at regionals and hopefully states,” Parrilla said. V V

Viera High’s Brumbaugh wins national art competition

Viera High senior Maura Brumbaugh always has loved taking art classes, knowing she can use colored pencils and watercolors to place her thoughts and emotions down on paper without using words.

Turns out she’s pretty good at creating posters on a computer, too.

Brumbaugh finished first in the National Ocean Pals Computer Graphic Poster Competition, which came with the theme “Polar Bears Walking on Thin Ice.” “I was quite surprised when I received the

letter telling me I won!”

Brumbaugh wrote in an email. “I had nearly forgotten about the project by then and thought it stood no chance in the competition.

“I’m sure many experienced students submitted outstanding artwork that caused the judges to be stumped for a while as to whose poster to choose.”

Brumbaugh, who likes to draw birds, said she had only created a poster on a computer one other time.

However, as a student in Susan West’s 2-D studio art class, she enjoys the fact she is given the opportunity to

experiment with new art forms.

It took her three days to complete the project, working on it during class time.

“I used Microsoft Word art tools to create my poster, and by some of the choices I made in my piece, I highlighted the danger that polar bears are in today,” Brumbaugh wrote. “My design features a polar bear

who looks forlorn as he drifts away under the stars on an iceberg; I wanted to make sure the polar bear closely resembled a real one, so I studied photos before starting.

“I wanted the composition to create emotion in the viewer even if he/she only glances quickly at the poster, so I emphasized the vast, lonely sky and the icebergs in the distance that have

evidently broken off from a landmass due to global warming.

“I chose to make the scene a nighttime one because it has the potential to instill more pity for the bear from the viewer than a daytime one would.”

Though she plans to study science in college, Brumbaugh said creating art will always be one of her favorite hobbies. V V

Viera High student leaders make walkout a positive experience

As 17 balloons sailed away to conclude Viera High School’s participation in National School Walkout on Wednesday, March 14, student leaders were delighted that the gathering did not have to be a pure example of civil disobedience.

“The administration was very cooperative and allowed us to do this,’’ said Dani Mordas, a Viera High student who was the first speaker after the 9:28 a.m. walkout. “They asked us what we wanted to do. It was very important to come together to show support for Parkland.’’

On Feb. 14, a lone gunman and former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland killed 17 people and wounded 14 others.

Six Viera High student government leaders spoke at the gathering, where a banner flapped with the following words: Eagles and Hawks, together we stand, sending love, thoughts, and prayers From one flock to another “We Fly Together” #MSDstrong #NeverAgain Mordas pointed out in her introduction that Viera High School is 2 hours and 22 minutes north of Douglas High School.

Evan Caldwell, another speaker, called upon both the left and the right, politically, to come together for a solution and to end their political warfare.

Caldwell said that tragedy desensitizes everyone to pain and that fear can turn us against each other. If this is not rectified, society is doomed to repeat its past mistakes.

Nathalie Burgos, another speaker, is tired of waking up scared and how the cycle of tragedy has gotten old.

“We need to write to Congress and communicate with our government,’’ Burgos said afterward.

“Direct communication is so important and not just settling (for the status quo).’’

Ariana Pereda said that one moment of silence is not enough to prevent bullying, which can lead to school violence. She said everyone matters and everyone has so much in common.

Andy Saraka, another student speaker, spoke out about standing up for what you believe is right. He implored his fellow students to do better than the elected officials, who have fallen short in their responsibilities.

Aravind wants her fellow students to let government leaders know their concerns and to participate in protest marches.

A voter registration day is scheduled for April 13 at the school.

Aravind quoted Mahatma Gandhi to wrap up her speech: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.’’

Afterward, Aravind said, “We need to create awareness as a first step to any chance for gun control or (treating) mental illness. Having this and reaching out to this large crowd is an integral part of the process. We want a better future for gun control legislation.’’

Mollie Roe did not speak at the gathering, but her classmates were quick to praise her work behind the scenes to make the day successful.

“We just want our students to get their voice out there,’’ Roe said. “This is the time.

Everyone should have a chance to speak out. The administration was really flexible and supportive.’’

Michael Alba, the Viera High School principal, knew this could be a teaching moment. He rejected the notion and threats emanating from other principals around the country of punishing students for conducting a walkout.

“I appreciate the student leaders, and I wanted to put the appropriate respect in helping them organize an event to rally behind”, Alba said. “They did a great job, and I’m super proud of them. We didn’t want to have several walkouts that weren’t well organized.’’

Farid, Gutta named Holy Trinity’s valedictorian, salutatorian

The first time Chris Farid met Sajan Gutta in seventh grade, he remembers thinking, “Oh, this is going to be interesting.”

Now, after pushing each other academically for the past six years, the two Holy Trinity students — and Viera residents — have been named the valedictorian and the salutatorian of this year’s senior class.

“I think it’s a good representation of all the hard work we put in through high school,” Gutta said. “But I think the real reward will be getting to go to the colleges we want to go to.”

Farid, who took 13 Advanced Placement classes as well as a course in differential equations at Florida Tech, has a 4.90 grade-point average. He already has been accepted at

“I’m going into pre-med, and also, I do a lot of music.

They have the Peabody Conservatory. So they have an incredible music program and they’re one of the best for pre-med.

“It just felt (right). And they don’t have a core curriculum, so I don’t have to take any English or History classes.

I really liked all that put together, and Baltimore is a pretty interesting city.”

Gutta, who took 14 AP classes along with an online course in business law, has a 4.88 GPA. He still is waiting to hear from his top college

choices.

“I would do computer science and economics and then I would potentially minor in either entrepreneurship, or I also have interest in sports management,” Gutta said.

Both students believe that being able to push each other through the years has been quite beneficial.

“I think it was good for us,” Gutta said. “It started out being more competitive than it ended up being at the end.

But it was good because it led us to do the extra things that will pay off now with college applications.”

Neither student was sure what they plan to say at graduation.

“My hair is pretty big, and the cap doesn’t really fit,” Farid said. “I might make a joke about that in my speech.

But other than that, I’m not sure yet.” V V

Holy Trinity Odyssey of the Mind team headed to state

There was no question what part of this year’s Odyssey of the Mind competition at Viera High was the favorite of Holy Trinity second-grader Deklan Boyles.

“I enjoyed being up on stage,” he said.

Well, come April 14, Boyles and six other Holy Trinity students will be back on stage — this time at the University of Central Florida — to compete at the state event.

Boyles, Angelica Norris, Greyson Steele, Lilliana Carter, Carrie Ann Conwell, Zoe Colling and Heidi Rauscher made up Holy Trinity’s Primary Division team made up of students in kindergarten through second grade.

Althhough their event is not competitive, they were recommended by the judges following their performance and were ultimately one of two teams picked out of a hat. Fourteen teams in all took part in the Primary Division, which featured a long-term project that began in October and a spontaneous problem they

had just minutes to prepare for.

The theme of the long-term project was “We’re Cooking Now.” “They had to present a cooking show,” said Duana Boyles, who served as the team’s coach. “They needed to have a chef and a special guest. The chef needed to teach the special guest a cooking lesson. They needed to have a story behind the meal.

“They needed to use balsa wood to hold a team-created bowl that was at least 6 inches in diameter. They needed to have a humorous scene and they needed to have a theme song used twice in the performance.”

The students came up with the idea to be sea creatures.

The chef was a narwhal, the special guest was a tiger shark and the dish they made was a great white shark salad.

The project had a budget of less than $125 and Duana Boyles was not allowed to assist in terms of putting the project together. The students created their costumes, picked their theme song (“Under the Sea”) and made their own sets.

Boyles also coached a group of fourth and fifth graders in the Problem 3 Mockumentary division that had a theme of “Alice in Wonderland.”

That group finished second and was comprised of Donovan Boesch, Lloyd Robinson, Gianna Theodoropoulos, Violet

Flores, Alina Zaidi, Elle Canlas and Olivia Durgin.

A team of third graders coached by Stephanie Rabbat finished fifth in the Problem 5 division with a theme of “A Stellar Hangout.”

That team was made up of Max Robinson, Kye Gillin, Brooke Hess, Emma Rabbat and Payton Gross.

Asked if she was looking forward to performing at the state competition, Norris said yes, because the group forgot one key ingredient in their great white shark salad.

“Yeah, we forgot the onions,” the second grader said, “so we’re going to have to work on that.” V V

Tighter security should make Brevard County schools safer

Students’ safety at school has become a concern across the nation, and Viera schools are among those under scrutiny for tighter security measures.

Viera and Suntree are just a few hours north of Parkland, the scene of the Feb. 14 tragic shooting deaths of 17 students and staff.

As students become more vocal about their right to a safe learning environment, administrators grapple with challenges and solutions.

Brevard County School Superintendent Desmond Blackburn and Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey recently discussed plans to increase school security in Brevard.

“We definitely welcome the sheriff’s recommendations,’’ Blackburn said during a recent press conference. “It’s important that we have his skill set and his expertise to guide us through this.”

Blackburn and Ivey have devised a four-part strategy: • Teaching students and staff what to do if an active shooting happens • Continued hardening

of schools (increasing building security) • Adding full-time resource officers to elementary schools • Implementing a volunteerbased school marshal program.

Ivey emphasized the importance of empowering students to voice concerns through Operation Speak Out, a phone app that has been successful in the past. The motto is, if you see something say something.

“Students are the ones that are there every day, they hear the remarks, they hear the comments, they see the bullying and everything else,” Ivey said. “We need to make that (reporting threats) as easy as we can.”

Students also are encouraged to speak to parents, peers, teachers or other trusted adults. For that to happen, snitching must be redefined to distinguish it from seeking help to preventing violence, according to violence prevention and school safety expert Dewey Cornell of the University of Virginia.

“We encourage our students to reach out to as many

trusted adults and even peers as they can,” said Jennifer Wolfinger, a spokesperson for Brevard Public Schools.

“A lot of times, their first line of communication is their teachers or administrators.

The more people they talk to, the faster we can respond.”

Another key aspect is training for an active shooter or other emergency.

Blackburn discussed a plan that will allow students and staff to know exactly what to do in the event of an active shooter, which will be formulated into a drill.

School hardening improvements will include perimeter fencing and a single-point entry, funded by the 2014 half cent sales tax. Structural changes are being considered, as are metal detectors and locking classrooms remotely.

“We are trying to not get very specific about measures,” Wolfinger said. “We don’t want to be vulnerable.”

She added that parents always are welcome on their child’s campus and they are welcome to assess the situation.

the front entrance are being finalized. Parents coming into the front office to check out their child will encounter a new security door and other measures to gain access to the attendance office.

The buildings at Viera and Suntree schools include challenges that are unique to each campus, but all will have armed resource officers.

Ivey doesn’t want to stop there. He is pushing to implement a controversial program called STOMP or, Sheriff Trained Onsight Marshal Program. STOMP,

opposed by many parents and teachers, has not yet been approved by the school board in Brevard. It allows for certain school employees to be trained and armed.

“Ideally (these would be) people with military or law enforcement experience,” Ivey said. “For example, ROTC commanders at schools, who are passionate to protect as well as educate (students).”

The Center for the Visually Impaired’s “Dining in the Dark” event takes the concept of walking in someone else’s shoes a step further.

The signature fundraiser, slated for April 21 at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place, allows guests the opportunity to experience life as a blind person.

Guests begin the evening with a lighted cocktail reception and silent auction, before being served a gourmet dinner served in complete darkness.

“It’s pitch dark when they’re eating, so we tell people to wear washable clothes, because there will be spills,” said Sid Mickle, the director of development for

the Center for the Visually Impaired .

When Mickle says it will be pitch dark, he means it, for even the exit signs in the banquet room are covered.

Officers from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will wear night vision goggles so they can lead guests to their seats.

Once seated, they will have to navigate the dinner, and the beverages, without the sense of sight to help. The chef at the Hilton has been tasked to create a menu with a full-flavor spectrum to compensate for the lack of visual stimulus.

Energy savings can be as easy as changing a light bulb Energy consumption is on the rise. Projections by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) show that “the world-wide energy consumption will on average continue to increase by 2 percent per year.”

According to EPA, because approximately 67 percent of our electricity comes from burning fossil fuels (mostly coal and natural gas), electricity production generates the largest share (29 percent in 2015) of greenhouse gas emissions.

Greenhouse gases trap heat and make the planet warmer. The longer they stay in the atmosphere, the higher their impact on long-term temperatures we experience on Earth and the greater threat they pose to a balanced environment.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is such a greenhouse gas that remains in the atmosphere for a very long time.

Since energy production is a major generator of CO2 emission, lowering energy consumption will be paramount for the health of our planet and the future of our younger generation.

One simple way of reducing energy consumption is by using LED lights.

The U.S. Dept. of Energy states that “light-emitting diode (LED) is one of today's most energy-efficient and rapidly-developing lighting technologies. [It] uses at least 75 percent less energy, is much cooler, and lasts 25 times longer than incandescent lighting.”

Knowing that, the Brevard Public Schools Energy/Resource Conservation Department launched a project to replace existing BPS lighting systems district wide with LED lighting with the goal of increasing efficiency and reducing both energy and maintenance costs.

The two-phased plan as described

by Joseph Montemurno, an energy/ resource conservation department specialist, will save BPS between

$500,000 and 600,000 or more a year.

“Phase 1 will replace our most predominant lighting — approximately 250,000-plus 4-foot tubular lamps. Phase 2 will address our high and predominate outside lighting, converting the existing fixtures to LED to achieve an approximate 50 percent plus energy savings.”

With those changes, BPS expects not only to have an impact on energy costs but also on helping “lower performing elementary schools to support improving their learning environment.”

“With stretched custodial resources in those schools,” adds Energy/Resource Conservation Manager Bruce Lindsay, “custodians are very excited about the 70,000hour light bulbs. It means that they will never have to replace a bulb again before they retire!”

The project, scheduled to start this March with early adopters Southwest Middle School, Eau Gallie High School and Space Coast Junior/Senior High School, should be completed in about five years and has an estimated simple

“Brevard Schools consume $11.3 million in electricity each year — 60 percent for air conditioning, 25 percent for lighting and 15 percent for plug loads. At the end of the fiveyear project, we should be shaving $2 million from our electric bill,” forecasts Lindsay.

And more savings are anticipated with what is planned for the lamps that will be removed.

“During phase 1, we will be removing 250,000-plus mostly functional T8 fluorescent lamps and stocking them in our warehouse where they will be available for free to our schools that have not yet been retrofitted to LED. Thus, schools will save money by not having to purchase additional T8 fluorescent lamps prior to their switch over to LEDs. BPS plans to auction off any of the removed T8 fluorescent lamps that we are unable to store or that remain at the end of the project to avoid the cost of material disposal,” shared Montemurno.

This is an incredible initiative and the perfect example of the kind of impact that using LED lighting might have on energy consumption and savings. This project sheds a light on how positive this type of change might be and it is an inspiration for anyone to start converting their system, too.

LED bulbs might be a bit expensive, but in the long run they are better for the environment and will translate into much lower running costs. If you are looking for an impactful Earth Day project to start at home, this will be the perfect one!

Suntree/Viera Library book sale has something for everyone “We have people come from Titusville and beyond.”

The semi-annual Suntree/ Viera Library book sale is a fun way to save money and support the library.

A treasure hunt of bargain books will include selections in young adult, children, fiction, non-fiction and cooking categories. Large print titles also are very popular, as are gardening, crafts, travel and sports books.

Everything is $2 or less.

According to Bobbie Shaw, a Friends of the Library member, there will be a “huge selection” this year.

Biographies, history and military, health and cooking, religion and self-help will all be for sale. Arts, poetry and the classics? You will find those at the book sale as well.

“All the proceeds go to the

Foster families needed to provide love, care for abandoned kittens at Humane Society

Local theater bolsters area with quality performances

If you love kittens and want to help them find homes, make plans to attend the Itty-Bitty Kitty Committee workshop this month.

The kitten workshop is free and takes place at the Brevard Humane Society’s Cocoa Adoption Center on Cox Road. The workshops are held every month to accommodate hundreds of kittens needing homes.

Participants will learn first aid, proper feeding of kittens, stimulation, litter box training and other essential skills for kitty care. Cleaning and flea control, weight gain, weaning and developmental milestones also will be discussed.

“The Itty-Bitty Kitten program teaches people how to care for kittens, from newborns up to 8 weeks of age, and nursing mothers as well,” said Michelle Deaton, foster and rescue coordinator.

There are many orphaned kittens in Brevard County that need experienced foster families knowledgeable on how to love and care for them. Every year about 100 foster kittens are added to the program. Every kitty in the foster program gets spayed, neutered and put up for adoption.

“It really depends on the community as to how many kittens need homes,” Deaton said. “It’s the public that finds the kittens and brings

“Theater should, at some point, make the audience feel uncomfortable and through those awkward moments open the patron to feelings and thoughts they would not have been expecting to receive.”

The Titusville Playhouse is staging the musical “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

The Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse is taking Monty Python from the screen to the stage with “Spamalot.” The Henegar Center is staging the play “Ugly Lies the Bone.” Cocoa Beach’s Surfside Playhouse lightens the mood with the humorous “who-done-it” play “The Games Afoot.” VV

Foster parents can choose to care for one to eight kittens, depending on their schedule.

Bottle babies must be hand fed every two to three hours, while older kittens need less care. Foster families can designate their preference during the workshop.

“We have anywhere from

20 to 25 people signing up a month,” Deaton said. “Last year, in 2017, we took in over 500 kittens through this program.”

The date of the next “Itty Bitty Kitty Committee” Kitten Workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 22. The workshop will be held at the Brevard Humane Society at 1020 Cox Road. There will be an “Itty Bitty Kitty Shower” from 1 to 3 p.m. April 15.

In addition to the workshop, an Itty-Bitty Kitty shower will raise donations for kitten supplies.

During the festival, copies of the Viera Wetlands Charlie Corbeil’s Birding Guide will be available.

Corbeil, who died in 2015, was a popular nature photographer who co-wrote a monthly column about nature with his wife, Charlotte, for the Viera Voice.

Spinning tales about flowers. Natural works of art, flowers are composed of exquisite modified leaves.

In addition to attracting essential pollinators, flowers enhance our lives. Indeed, we say it symbolically with flowers — Valentine roses, Easter lilies or Christmas poinsettias.

Symbolism has embraced flowers for centuries. The fleur-de-lis has long been identified with the French crown. In the Wars of the Roses fought over the throne of England from 1455 to 1485, the red rose of Lancaster and the white rose of York were significant.

In 1986, President Reagan proclaimed the rose as the national flower during a White House Rose Garden ceremony.

Moreover, flowers have power. Originating in the 1960s in California, Flower Power (a passive resistance to the Vietnam War and established values in society) promoted love, not war.

This young counterculture of hippies wore flowers in their hair and clothing with floral appliques. The flower children sang, danced and handed out flowers commonly picked from public gardens.

Similarly, the Power of Flowers Project spreads love.

Volunteers recycle flowers from events and distribute them to the lonely, the isolated or the ill.

Some sporting events reward with flowers.

Blankets of flowers drape the winners of the Triple Crown of horse racing.

In the Kentucky Derby (“The Run for the Roses”), red roses abound. The Preakness Stakes (“The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans”) honors the Maryland state flower — although not then in bloom; therefore, yellow chrysanthemums are replacements. In the Belmont Stakes (“The Run for the Carnations”), white carnations delight.

During past Olympics, bouquets commonly greeted the champions — a substitute for the crowning olive wreath of antiquity.

Yet, in recent Olympics, logo sculptures and stuffed white tigers have replaced flowers.

The ultimate floral extravaganza is the Rose Parade (Tournament of Roses Parade), usually held on New Year’s Day followed by the Rose Bowl college football game. In 2018, the spectacle included 44 flowered-covered floats. The initial parade on Jan. 1, 1890 featured horses and buggies bedecked with flowers; after the parade, young men competed in public games.

The orange blossom is the state flower of Florida.

Beneficial are flowers. They provide natural medicine, often without side effects and expensive prices. Crushed, dried, in ointments or in teas, they alleviate numerous afflictions, including headaches, colds or anemia.

Flowers also provide pleasurable nourishment such as the petals of the ubiquitous rose with more than 100 species — strawberries, apples and other fruits also belong to the rose family. Parts of flowers used, for example, in teas, salads, syrups or garnishes should be researched for safety. Organic flowers are more reliable to ingest.

Nursery products commonly retain pesticides, and roadside species are covered with toxic emissions from vehicles.

Fortunately, the hair in the flowers, leaves and stem of such a plant as the honeysuckle absorb these pollutants. Hopefully, the honeysuckle might soon be hybridized with more hair to absorb more carbon dioxide — it will eat smog.

Also esteemed are some Florida flowers. The state flower is the fragrant, white orange tree blossom, commercially used for perfume and honey. The state wildflower coreopsis (tickseed), ranging from yellow to pink, maintains highway beautification and prevents erosion. The exquisite purple passion flower grows on a vine that is a common host to the zebra longwing, the state butterfly.

Enduring is the joy of flowers, but no one is promised a rose garden.

Two Men and a Truck locations across the United States will collect donations for distribution to local women’s and family shelters for delivery on Mother’s Day through its Movers for Moms program.

Mother’s Day should be a joyous occasion for mothers and their families.

Unfortunately for some women, that’s not always the case.

This is the 11th year for the Two Men and a Truck Movers for Moms program and the eighth year that Brevard County’s franchise has participated in the program. The women at Serene Harbor, a domestic violence shelter, will be the beneficiaries of the local program.

For 26 years, Serene Harbor has provided safe and confidential services such as a confidential hotline, safety planning, emergency shelter, legal advocacy, counseling and outreach to more than 27,000 women, children and their pets in Brevard County.

King Center shows off Preston Studios works in April

The stained and art glass works of the Preston Studios of Melbourne will enhance the lobby of the Maxwell King Center during April.

Jerry Preston and John Emery, creators and designers of art glass images and windows, are enjoying their 42nd year in business.

“About 80 percent of our work is residential,” said Emery, the spokesman for the artists. “We do home entrances and their bathroom windows, stainedglass windows in a number of hospital chapels in Central Florida and Tiffany-like lamps and art.”

Their work has been created for the owners of California’s Hearst Castle, for Allen Neuharth, USA Today and Florida Today founder, writer George Plimpton and the Melbourne Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, to name a few. Interior designers from Brevard County to Canada, across the USA and on to Denmark and Scotland use Preston Studio creations.

“It takes four to six weeks of construction for a residential entrance, not including design,” Emery said. “It is custom and oneof-a-kind, and the design is intended to last forever. It is intended to enhance the value of the home, so we match the architecture as much as possible. Jerry is the practical person and the one who cuts most of the glass.”

“John likes to say that he does the design and I do the trees,” said Preston with a chuckle. “John is the primary designer and he is very good at it. He checks out the setting and the design.”

“STAR … will address the needs of students that have been identified as having severe behavior problems or any anti-social behavior and may be of danger to themselves or other,” Blackburn said.

Students, parents and community members are invited to voice their input.

Blackburn said he supports students who want to demonstrate peacefully.

On March 14, Viera High principal Mike Alba joined students as they participated in a national student walk out for 17 minutes during school hours, a minute for each victim in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

Does activism make a

difference? One landmark result is the bipartisan vote by the Florida Congress in favor of a gun control and school safety bill. The bill requires firearm purchasers to be at least 21 years old and adhere to a three-day waiting period. It also bans bump stocks and provides funding for school police officers and mental health counselors.

That same legislation allows school boards to implement a school marshal program. On March 9, it was signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott.

The next School Board Meeting will be at 5:30 p.m.
