Start searching for those alarm clocks. Children around Brevard County no longer will be able to stay up late watching movies or playing on the computer. Waking up late will end Thursday, Aug. 10 when public schools begin the 2017-2018 school year. Any last-minute vacations or long-weekend treks better be taken now. Take a drive to

the north and take a dip at a few of the cold-water springs in other counties. Drive over to St. Petersburg to see the Tampa Bay Rays play. They’re making a run for the American League playoffs, challenging the Red Sox and Yankees. Go to our wonderful shorelines or make a trek to beaches around the state. You won’t regret it. There’s no such thing as a bad day at the beach. VV

Viera continues to be a dream come true for Duda family BY JULIE STURGEON

As Viera continues to grow, a dream is unfolding for the Duda family. The Dudas, founders of Viera, always have had faith in their dreams. Viera means faith in Slavic, and the Duda family’s faith and vision has served them well. Faith has paved a path to prosperity for the Dudas, through both agricultural operations and the development of Viera, the master planned community which is currently flourishing as construction keeps pace with buyer demand. So just who are the Dudas and what is their vision? It is a story rich with history and family ties. The Dudas first came to Brevard as immigrants from Slovakia. After accumulating plots of land, the family started the A. Duda & Sons, Inc. in 1926. A. Duda and Sons, Inc. is a 91-year-old diversified land company, consisting of agriculture, ranching and real estate operations. Third-generation Dudas established The Viera Company, a subsidiary of A. Duda & Sons, Inc. and the master developer for Viera. “Viera was once a 38,000acre parent track called the Cocoa Ranch,” said Todd J. Pokrywa, the Senior Vice President, Land Use Planning and Development, The Viera Company. “In

the ’80s, future planning commenced when the Duda family started thinking about what the property was going to be when it (grew) up. By 1992, the first community, Hammock Lakes was underway in Viera East.” Fast forward 25 years to 2017. Viera is a topselling master-planned community in the United States. There are a little more than 20,500 acres of neighborhoods, restaurants and business parks, along with an emerging town center and numerous tree-lined trails. Home to approximately 23,000 residents, Viera continues to sell houses to a diverse market. Vision has become reality as the Dudas’ master-planned community unfolds. “We offer something for

all ages and income levels — single-family homes, villas, retirement communities, even apartments,” Pokrywa said. “There is everything from the highest priced on the north end with Adelaide, which is a million-plus community, to Viera’s first modern luxury design in the neighborhood of Modern Duran to new multi-family rental communities.” What started as an agriculture enterprise continues to grow as Viera expands to the west and south. While Viera is experiencing a building boom, the master-planned community continues to include plenty of green space. Pokrywa said there are more than 100 miles of hard and soft trails throughout the community of Viera. “It’s one of the features

we pride ourselves on, and the trail system is consistently rated the number one amenity that residents and prospective buyers value,” Pokrywa said. “We’ve worked hard to integrate the trail system between neighborhoods

and other destinations in the community, such as The Avenue Viera, the Viera Regional Park, Brevard Zoo, and the Ritch Grissom Memorial Wetlands at Viera.”

Try out for “The Nutcracker” even if you’re 80, or older BY MUFFY BERLYN

Warm up with pliés (deep knee bends) and try out at the open auditions for “The Nutcracker” this year on Aug. 12 at the King Center. The audition times for each age group will be posted online on the Space Coast Ballet Company’s website at spacecoastballetcompany. com. There is a $10 fee to audition. All age groups are needed for the party scene. Principal dancers come from around the world to perform key roles in “The Nutcracker.” “They come from Russia, New York, Boston, we always have the best of the best,” said Loretta Grella, co-chairwoman of the Space Coast Ballet Company’s board of directors. “Usually we have the two principals, the adult Clara and the Prince are professionals, a total of five people are professionals, the rest is community based. We take from all dance schools. You don’t even have to have been in a dance school” to pass the audition. People 3 years old to 80 are in the party scene.” Laurie Bollhoefer, 19, was 5 when she started taking ballet lessons and she joined the Space Coast Ballet Company 12 years ago. She’s barely known a world without dance. Last year, she danced the role of Snow Queen and danced in the Waltz of the Flowers as part of the annual “The Nutcracker” at the King Center, which is performed the first Saturday

in December with two performances, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. “I really like the work you have to put into it,” she said of ballet. Bollhoefer enjoys the discipline. “The more work you put in the more results you see.” Bollhoefer, a sophomore at HOW Florida Tech, is RUNWAY S CTION studying software U A SILENT engineering. Grella plans on something “extra special” LIFE for this year. She would not divulge her secret, but it will be something dealing with the dancers. This year’s performances will be directed by Space Coast Ballet Company’s striking new artistic director, resort–style, Artem Yachmennikov, independent who has an impressive background in ballet. Viera High’s Guettler bonds with father while golfing BY CARL KOTALA

He first picked up a golf club at the age of three, but it wasn’t until just two years ago that Gage Guettler started playing the game consistently. And it was for the best possible reason. “My dad’s a huge golfer, always has been,” Guettler said. “He was like, ‘Why don’t you try this? Pick up a golf club, come out with me and practice. I was like, ‘Hey, this is pretty fun.’ I might want to try this.’ “And here I am now.” The Viera High sophomore will head to Orlando on Aug. 12 to take part in the Drive, Chip & Putt sub-regional competition at the Cypress Bay Golf Club. The top two in each age group from that event will move on to

the regional round at TPC Sawgrass on Sept. 16 with the winner there getting a chance to compete for the national title next spring at golf’s holy ground, The Masters, in Augusta, Ga. Guettler qualified for the sub-regional by winning the local competition in the 14-15 boys age group at the Duran Golf Club in May. The event drew more than 100 children from all over Central Florida and was a smashing success that should ensure Duran will get to host future Drive, Chip & Putt events. Founded in 2013 by The Masters Tournament, United States Golf Association and The PGA of America, the Drive, Chip & Putt Championship is a free nationwide development

tournament designed to grow the game by focusing on the three fundamental skills used in golf. Golfers hit three balls in each event. The driving competition is based on distance and accuracy, while the chipping and putting scores are based on how close the shots are to the hole. Other golfers who played at Duran and qualified for the sub-regional in their age group included:

State tournament run ends for three VSLL teams BY CARL KOTALA

The Viera-Suntree Little League showed once again it’s among the top leagues in Brevard County this All-Star season. The VSLL had three teams win both district and sectional titles to advance to the state tournament. One of those teams — Seniors baseball — reached the state championship game while the 8-10 softball and 9-11 baseball teams got to the state semifinals. The Seniors baseball team went to Fort Braden and defeated San Mateo 12-2, Hancock 10-3 and St. Cloud 4-3 to get out of pool play. The team played North Springs in the title game, but wound up losing 18-2. Members of the team include: Bill Moser; Carson Janssen; Brady Janssen; Tyler Madl; Zach Taylor; Jackson Taylor; Christian Stubbendeck; Evan Blake; J.T. I couldn’t do anything around the green. But now they’re getting much, much better.” The improvement in Guettler’s game started coming a year ago when he began taking lessons from Justin Blazer, who is the director of instruction at the Duran Academy of Golf. As Guettler’s mother, Samantha, pointed out, the real beauty in her son taking up golf has been the chance to play with his father, Carl, because it’s a game they can always play together. Father and son play golf together as much as they can and always make the game part of family vacations. I get to spend almost every weekend playing golf with my dad, which is nice,” Gage said. “… It’s a great time for us to catch up on what’s going on during the week. He’ll help me on my golf swing. I can’t really help him. He’s pretty good.” What would it mean to Gage — who just turned 15 last month — if he were able to play golf in Augusta? “Oh my goodness, it would probably be the greatest moment of my golfing career and life,” he said. “It would be unbelievable. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.” VV

Robinson part of versatile, interesting VEMA group BY DAVID D. HORST

Conversations during a round of golf at Viera East Golf Club can be interesting. Just ask any of the members of the Viera East Men’s Golf Association. VEMA members come from all over, boasting different backgrounds in education, military service and even the corporate world. Others were government officials and another was knighted by Queen Elizabeth. Jim Robinson, a popular VEMA golfer, has won the club championship four times. Robinson and his wife Judy moved to Viera 17 years ago, and they never have regretted

the move. Both worked for the Brevard County School system. Jim Robinson, who earned his bachelor’s degree at Mississippi State University and his master’s degree at Rollins College, taught at Merritt Island High School. He also coached basketball and golf at the school. He was a teacher of the year three times and a teacher of the year finalist in 2001. The couple have four children and seven grandchildren, who all live nearby. Robinson was VEMA’s vice president from 2004 to 2006 and he was VEMA’s president in 2013. He also has been a board member and he now

is the handicap chairman. He plays golf several times a week. "We considered several golf communities in central Brevard and felt our choice of Viera East was the right one," Robinson said. "The friendships that we've made through neighbors, social interactions and golf have certainly enriched our life." VEMA’s members have handicaps ranging from the single digits to 30 and above. Each week, the tournament director chooses a competition format and works with the pro shops to create flights of similarly skilled players. After the event, several

Holy Trinity students work on research projects at FIT

BY CARL KOTALA

Working on a project at the Florida Institute of Technology during the summer might have helped Holy Trinity senior Chris Farid decide what he wants to study in college. Farid was one of five Holy Trinity students who spent five weeks working on a research project in the Olson Research Laboratories in the Chemistry Department at the Florida Institute of Technology. The course was titled “Computational Modeling for Rational Molecular Design” and was under the direction of Associate Professor Joel Olson. It was designed to “introduce the student to modern approaches of computational chemistry, as well as issues and methods for molecular design.” It was the computational part of the project that really caught Farid’s eye. “The amazing thing is it wasn’t a traditional experiment,” he said. “It was all on the computer. It was all through (the Spartan) program. It was just mind-

boggling how a program can understand a chemical reaction.” Farid, along with Holy Trinity students John Ganiban, Kyle Go, Eamon Brennan, Hari Dandapani — and former Holy Trinity student Siddarth Ranganath — used tryptanthrin as their study subject. Tryptanthrin is known to be an antiinflammatory, anti-parasitic and anti-bacterial and can also prevent angiogenesis. “What we were trying to do was understand how it’s formed so we can replicate it more easily to reap its benefits,” Farid said. “What we would do is take a nitrate group and pose it against the tryptanthrin molecule at different distances and different positions. “Tryptanthrin only nitrates at position eight, but there are 12 positions. So we were trying to understand why it only goes to position eight. We would pose the molecule and bring it closer and closer to the tryptanthrin molecule to simulate how the energies would react. By doing that, we would see an energy graph as you would see in a normal chemical reaction.

“We wanted to see if the energy reaction would be the least in position eight, which would justify why it goes to position eight. That was the main goal of the project.” The group presented their findings at Florida Tech’s Engineering Building last month. Although they did not ultimately achieve their goal — perhaps because they were only using a 90-degree angle — they did find success in the second part of the nitration reaction using the H2SO4 molecule. “In that step, it actually preferred position eight with the energies,” Farid said. “So while we didn’t prove why (it preferred) position eight in the first step of the reaction, in the second step of the reaction it actually did what we were looking for.” This was the fourth year Holy Trinity has partnered with Florida Tech to allow students to work on an exclusive guided research opportunity. Sharing smiles, Viera Rocks followers find their happy place BY JULIE STURGEON

Spreading smiles across Viera, a mini rock painting group has gained a modest following. Viera Rocks, started last November by two 9-year-old girls, is the sister to Brevard Rocks. It has a few very simple messages: Spread kindness. Make people happy. Meet new friends. “Rock painting has been a wonderful way for me to spend time with my grandchildren,” said Cindy Johnson, who moved to Viera last year. “I used to live in Lakeland and we started rock painting there. When I moved to Viera, my granddaughter wanted to start a rock painting group in this area.” Johnson, who fell in love with Viera while visiting her daughter’s family, said granddaughter Kaitlyn Elliot and friend Emma Smith started the local rock movement together, although the Facebook site is maintained by grandma. Some Viera Rocks members are just starting to dabble with paint brushes, others are budding artists. “I like to make people happy,” granddaughter Elliot

discover others’ painted rocks. “You just have to buy some rocks and art supplies, and have fun painting and hiding,” Johnson said. “This is fun for all ages, young and old.” No skill is required for the rock painters, and everyone can enjoy the calming effect of art. Viera Voice has joined in promoting the movement with a weekly contest. Two prize winners are chosen each week; rock photos can be posted at #VieraVoiceRocks. “As a mom who does this on her downtime at night, I make rocks to support

said. “It’s fun when you find the rocks, and you get excited.” The Viera rock-hiding movement is one of several in Brevard County. Brevard Rocks, founded by Jen Justiniano, is the largest group with 36,000 followers. Rock groups focus on positivity and spending time with family, enjoying the fresh air and spreading cheer as they hide and

my son's habit of taking rocks he finds (he finds 3, I make 3, etc) and don't necessarily do it for any sort of rewards or recognition, but Viera Voice is a great local publication and … they are holding a contest where two winners are picked each week,” posted VieraVoiceRocks contest winner Connie Soga Norris. As with other rock groups in Brevard, there is a theme with Viera Rocks of keeping cell phones and electronics at bay, spending time focusing on something bigger than yourself. Join a rock group and be part of a happy movement. VV

Chateau Madeleine holds special place in hearts for Hardoon family BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER

Madeleine Hardoon didn’t live long enough to see the completion of her son’s vision for Brevard Medical City located in Suntree. Dr. Abe Hardoon, her son, and family will honor her memory with Chateau Madeleine. The facility, named in her honor, will be a state-of-theart assisted senior living and memory care apartmentstyle facility. Chateau Madeleine will

be built on Phase 3 and 4 of Brevard Medical City as part of the new urban community design that the Hardoon family envisioned for their main family business, Suntree Internal Medicine. After many designs and meetings with the ME Site Development’s site contractor’s design team, which is owned by Eric Hardoon, the family settled on the concept for Brevard Medical City. The 24-acre medical/ residential city will have a

6½-acre pond with a lighted walking trail. There will be 22 professional, retail and medical condominiums, a diagnostic center, an internal medicine practice and a future independent retirement residence located on Phase 5. ME Site Development’s crew established Suntree Internal Medicine, the anchor for Brevard Medical City, during Phase 1. Suntree Internal Medicine, which was established in 2002, has 10 providers, seven doctors and three nurse practitioners. “We have been contemplating the construction of the assisted living apartments since 2014,’’ Dr. Abe Hardoon said. “When we were going through the planning, my mother Madeleine passed away. So, the assisted facility is named in her honor.’’

The Chateau Madeleine site is at 205 Hardoon Lane in Suntree, right behind 6619 N. Wickham Road. The location near Wickham Road and U.S. 1 is a coveted spot. “We have an aging population in Brevard County, and it is important that we have facilities to meet their needs,” said state Sen. Debbie Mayfield, a Republican who represents Florida’s 17th District. Mayfield attended the July 10 groundbreaking. “Brevard Medical City, especially with the groundbreaking and building of Chateau Madeleine, will help meet the needs of our aging population in both health care and convenience. This is a positive addition for Brevard, and I am excited to see its effects.” Rick Lacey, chairman of the

Brevard County Florida GOP, agreed. “This kind of a development is one of the real reasons why people move here and stay here in Brevard County,’’ Lacey said. “It’s an exciting part of the community that is really going to make a major difference in the quality of lives of people not only today but in the future.’’ The Hardoon family hopes construction is completed by next summer. “The assisted living facility will be composed of 89 rental units with 24-hour nursing care on-site, plus many other amenities,” Hardoon said. “Also, 30 units of the total will be for our memory-care residences. We hope to open our doors to the public and complete construction by the summer of 2018. Like a hotel, people will have access to three planned fine dining experiences a day, planned activities and great entertainment. “They will receive the care and services they desire. We will shuttle them to local stores or doctors’ offices. A provider will come to their unit or apartment to see them there if needed.” Independent living apartments for residents 55 and older will highlight the final phase of Brevard Medical City. The apartments will be larger than the residences for Chateau Madeleine. A tower will have a rooftop restaurant open to the public. For residents, there will be an option for meals, a cafeteria and someone on-site for emergencies 24 hours a day. VV For information on the project, go to SuntreeALF.com.

Historic Florida hotels COMPILED BY JOHN TRIESTE

Florida has many historic hotels that offer wonderful learning experiences. You should stay overnight or at least tour some of these hotels. These elegant hotels/ mansions were all built in the late 19th or early 20th century. Many have been fully restored and most still are in full operation to delight their guests.

Miami Beach

Cadillac Hotel — 3925 Collins Ave., 33140, 305-538-3373 It is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It currently is called the Courtyard Cadillac Miami Beach/Oceanfront. The oceanfront hotel is a stunning boutique Art Deco hotel that has graced Collins Avenue and the shores of Miami Beach for almost seven decades. Fontainbleau Hotel — 4441 Collins Ave., 33140, 305-538-2000 It is one of the most historically and architecturally significant hotels in Miami

Beach. Opened in 1954 and designed by Morris Lapidus, it was arguably the most luxurious hotel in Miami Beach. The 1,504-room resort is situated on oceanfront Collins Avenue in the heart of Millionaire’s Row.

Palm Beach

The Breakers Palm Beach 1 South County Road, 33480 561-655-6611 First known as The Palm Beach Inn, it was opened on Jan. 16, 1896 by oil, real estate and railroad tycoon Henry Flagler to accommodate travelers on his Florida East Coast Railway. It occupies the beachfront portion of the grounds of the Royal Poinciana Hotel, which Flagler had opened beside Lake Worth Lagoon facing the inland waterway in 1894. Guests began requesting rooms “over by the breakers,” so Flagler renamed it The Breakers Hotel in 1901. The wooden hotel burned on June 9, 1903 and was rebuilt, opening on Feb. 1, 1904. Rooms started at $4 a night, including three meals a day.

Because Flagler forbade motorized vehicles on the property, patrons were delivered between the two hotels in wheeled chairs powered by employees. It has a nine-hole golf course.

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse still beams with pride

BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER The only lighthouse owned and operated by the U.S. Air Force is positioned in Brevard County and it is known as the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. Still operating, the light comes on every night to shine out 22 miles into the ocean. It protects passing ships from dangerous shoals. “This is the second lighthouse at the Cape,” said Ron Ecker, lighthouse docent and member of both the Florida Lighthouse Association and the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation on which he serves. “The first lighthouse, built in 1848, was 60-feet high and the light showed for 10 miles into the ocean. Then they discovered there were dangerous shoals farther out. So in 1858, a cast iron lighthouse was built in New York State. But production stopped when the Civil War started because the company had to build cannons. Construction began again on the lighthouse after the war. Assembly was completed in 1868 and it stood a few yards from the original. For a while, two lighthouses were on the Cape.” The government decided to move the lighthouse to the point of the older lighthouse and it proceeded to demolish the original lighthouse. Then, it used the original concrete and foundation to relocate the new lighthouse about a mile in shore where it is now, according to Ecker. “It took months to reassemble and get the light lighted,” Ecker said. “To put the lighthouse back together, every piece inside was numbered in Roman numerals and outside pieces marked in Arabic numbers. Still standing where it was placed in July 1884, the light was automated in 1933 with two modern optic lenses now used.” In 1939, the U.S. Coast Guard took over all lighthouses. After World War II, (1947 or 1948) the Cape Canaveral site received 900 acres of land from the lighthouse to the ocean since the U.S. government was looking for a place to launch rockets, according to Ecker. Hanger C, right next to the lighthouse, was where the German rocket scientist Wernher Von Braun launched

The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation was instrumental in getting the tours resumed. launch, the government moved the residents to the hotel on the coast. The communities originally were built in and around lighthouse keepers’ cottages and a school. In 1967, the cottages were destroyed. In 2000, the Coast Guard turned the lighthouse over to the U.S. Air Force, making it the only operational lighthouse owned by the U.S. Air Force and owned by the 45th Space Wing based at Patrick Air Force Base, Ecker said. The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Foundation, founded to help preserve the light, is trying to raise $2 million to rebuild lighthouse keepers’ cottages near the lighthouse. The group is starting a fundraiser to purchase a brick for the walkway surrounding the lighthouse at a cost of $150 each with five characters per line of inscription. The former Lobster Fest fundraiser will be started once again in 2018 and events at the lighthouse

SUNTREENews

Additional lanes approved for crowded intersection

BY JULIE STURGEON

Suntree drivers should feel a little safer in the future. An unusually high crash rate at the intersection of Suntree Boulevard and U.S. 1 prompted the Florida Department of Transportation to conduct a safety study. The findings, to the relief of many area residents, resulted in the FDOT’s proposal to implement a new left-handturn lane and a new rightturn lane at the intersection. “They did a traffic study because a lot of crashes were happening here, and this project is supposed to reduce the number of crashes,” said J. William Lanier, project engineer. “What we’re doing is adding a left-turn lane on U.S. 1, and adding a receiving lane on Suntree Boulevard.” A public meeting was held by the FDOT on July 12 to inform citizens of the turn lane and to address questions about the project. The FDOT said communitymember feedback has been in favor of the project overall.

“From what I know, there has been mostly positive (feedback) from the community. This is a safetyimprovement project,” said Todd Lang of the FDOT. “The left-turn lane on U.S. 1 backs up considerably. The addition of another left-turn lane will help more cars cue up in the turn lane and not the through lanes of U.S. 1.,” Lanier said. “We are also adding another right-turn lane (onto U.S. 1) from Suntree Boulevard, changing the movement to two rights.” Benefits of the project will include milling and resurfacing of existing pavement and increased pedestrian safety. New curb ramps, a new traffic signal with pedestrian crossing signals and other modifications will improve safety and operations at the intersection. Drainage improvements are included in the plan. A 5-foot bike lane also will be added in the northbound lane. “We’re also helping bikers get through the intersection on U.S. 1,’’ Lanier said. ”We shifted the lanes to accommodate a 5-foot bike

lane, which is great for the bicyclists.’’ Several driveways on the north side of Suntree Boulevard will be reconstructed where they join the sidewalk to meet requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). One driveway at Harmony Music will be relocated to meet Brevard County standards. No other changes in access will occur, and access to affected properties will be maintained during construction. Construction is projected to commence in the Fall of 2018, with completion in the Spring of 2019. The total cost of the project is $1.7 million.

Einstein Bros. Bagels butters up Suntree with delicious product BY JULIE STURGEON

Bagel lovers know that a fresh bagel has a limited lifespan and that the perfect bagel must have a distinct combination of chewiness and crunchiness. Einstein Bros. Bagels in Suntree fills the cases with piping hot bagels every two hours, ensuring that customers can enjoy the delicious warm crunchiness of a fresh bagel whenever they walk in. “We offer a great healthy alternative to fast food,” said Dr. Jim Shafer, who owns the Suntree franchise. “Everything we serve is fresh.”

Twenty-one types of bagels are available at Einstein Bros. Bagels, including garlic, potato, cranberry, asiago and onion. Toppings, or shmear, include onion and chive, smoked salmon, blueberry and garlic with herb. “My philosophy is that if you take care of the customers they will take care of you,” Shafer said. “We know all of our customers. Seventy percent are daily returns. When they walk in, my staff already knows what they want. It’s like a Cheers atmosphere.” The neighborhood bagel shop offers egg sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, bagel boxes, and tempting

beverages in a familyfriendly atmosphere. Lunch options include Spinach & Artichoke Chicken, Italian Chicken and even a pizza bagel. Calorie content is available on the menu. “My favorite part of this is the challenge of owning a business, and providing jobs for 80 people in two counties,” said Shafer, a neurologist. “We are doing something positive for the community.” Shafer, who has opened four Einstein Bros. Brothers bagel shops in four years, said that he chose the bagel franchise because it allowed him to continue his medical career as he pursued the restaurant business. Einstein

Bagels originally began in Colorado, and Shafer contacted them several times before the company agreed to open a franchise on the Treasure Coast, followed by three more in Brevard County. “I could not do this without my operations officer and my managers,” Shafer said.

“With owning a franchise like this, you don’t have to be there all the time.” COO Paul Lydon takes care of day to day operations, while Gabe Garcia is the manager of the Suntree Einstein Bros. Brothers bagels. Einstein Bros. Bagels, located at 4840 N. Wickham Road, is open daily. VV

Smile Viera looks forward to its new facility, new location BY DARRELL WOEHLER

A new face for the Smile Viera dental office is now taking shape at its soonto-be new location near the intersection of Stadium Parkway and Porada Drive in Viera. Construction is expected to be completed in December, with an anticipated move-in date of January. Groundbreaking for the new 15,000 square-foot Class A office facility took place in early July under the watchful eyes of Dr. Dominic Roppa and his wife Dr. Kara Marshall-Roppa. Smile Viera will utilize 5,000 square feet of the new building, which will be a nice expansion from its nearby current offices at 5455 Murrell Road. The

new location also will greatly increase traffic exposure. Smile Viera is a full-service dental operation managed by three doctors and 12 other associates, including hygienists, assistant dental personnel, business operators, an insurance coordinator, a treatment coordinator, two sleep analysts and an office manager. Roppa said his office attempts to fill the needs of patients of all ages with personal and comprehensive care, which includes patient education and to build a lasting relationship in their overall healthcare. Procedures provided include family dentistry, dental implants, restorative care and cosmetic care. Continuing education plays

Renewable energy is the future that we should choose Who would think that a polluted world is better to live in than a clean one? That water with floating dead fish is better than water safe to fish and swim in? That breathing smog is better than clean air? Who would think that destroying natural sites, killing everything in and around it and compromising resources we depend on is a good idea? If I had to guess, I would say no one. Unfortunately, in states such as Texas, air-polluting companies seem to be getting away with constant violation of air permits.

BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth

President & Founder, 3Rs and Beyond

Texas Tribune reported that in a single event in 2015, “more than 300,000 pounds of 1,3-butadiene — a highly explosive chemical and known human carcinogen used to manufacture rubber — escaped into the atmosphere” and “in less than an hour, the plant spewed

258 times more butadiene into the atmosphere than allowed by state law.” In 2016, that same company was responsible for a “2,100-barrel oil spill in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico,” causing “a 2-mile by 13-mile (about 3 kilometer by 21 kilometer) sheen [to be] visible in the sea about 97 miles off the Louisiana coast,” reported the Huffington Post. And these are the events we hear about. “According to records obtained by The Associated Press, [300 oil pipeline spills in less than two years in North Dakota alone, which is the second oil-producing state behind Texas], are among some 750 ‘oil field incidents’ that have occurred since January 2012 without public notification,” according to an October 2013 story in USA Today. What are we doing to our people, our home? How much longer will decision makers pretend that those things do not have a great effect on life and the balance of the environment? Fortunately, many leaders are pushing changes and creating policies that will greatly improve this situation, eliminating risks of incidents like those, and avoiding disasters like the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, recognized as the worst oil spill in U.S. history. They are pushing for the use of renewable energy. Unlike fossil fuels such

as coal, oils and natural gas, which draw on finite resources that will eventually dwindle and become too expensive or too environmentally damaging to retrieve, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, renewable energy uses [natural] resources such as wind and solar energy that are constantly replenished and will never run out. The United States currently relies heavily on fossil fuels, but there are signs that this is about to change. Sierra Club's Ready for 100 Campaign launched Mayors for 100% Clean Energy, “calling on mayors from big cities and small towns, regardless of their political party [affiliation], to support a vision of 100 percent clean and renewable energy in their cities, towns, communities and across the country.” The campaign page highlights that “mayors understand first-hand the threats to security and public health that families are facing across the country” and should be the ones taking the lead in this change with views to “protect our kids and families from pollution, create new jobs and local economic opportunities, and ensure that all people have access to affordable energy solutions.” As of this writing, 135 mayors, 18 from Florida, have

pledged their support for a community-wide transition to 100-percent renewable energy, and the Melbourne City Council planned to vote on a resolution joining Sierra Club's Ready for 100 Campaign. Could that be a step toward putting Brevard on the map for more sustainable solutions? The United States as a country has some catching up to do in that area. France just announced a major shift to end the sales of gas and diesel cars by 2040. Other countries such as Norway and India have set even more aggressive targets. According to The New York Times, “Norway plans to sell only electric cars starting in 2025, and India plans to do so in 2030.” Car manufacturers are ready for the switch. On July 5, The New York Times added “Volvo said that all of its new models beginning in 2019 would be either battery-powered cars or hybrids that combined electric motors with diesel or gasoline engines.” Other car manufacturers like Renault, which started selling batterypowered cars in 2011, and the PSA Group, which makes Peugeot and Citroën cars, have been preparing for this for a while. Now it is up to us to decide which side of history we would like to be on. VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@3RsAndBeyond.org.

St. John the Evangelist continues unprecedented growth in area

VIERA VOICE Darrell Woehler

Construction is progressing rapidly for the new church at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Community in Viera. The new sanctuary will have a seating capacity for 1,100.

October is quickly approaching and Brevard Zoo is preparing plenty of tricks and treats for this year’s Boo at the Zoo. This all-inclusive, allages annual event, which is more than 20 years running, features live entertainment, nightly costume contests, the “Boo Choo” train ride and, of course, plenty of trickor-treating. New this year are the haunted “Hall of Illusions” and an original puppet show. The Zoo is seeking local businesses and community organizations to sponsor treat stations. Sponsors can choose to participate for one, two or all three weekends. Packages begin at $300. On Fridays and Saturdays during October, events will run from 5:30 to 9 p.m. On Sundays, it will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m. This year’s events will be Oct. 13 to 15, Oct. 20 to 22 and Oct. 27 to 29. For more information, call 321-254-9453, ext. 485. VV

Senior volunteers help change lives one computer at a time BY FLORA REIGADA

What started as a small project to build a computer from used spare parts for one child, has since turned into an ongoing endeavor that has provided computers for 34,000 students. Each Tuesday at Titusville's old Whispering Hills Elementary School, a group of volunteers meets to change lives through Computers Advancing Education, a nonprofit organization. Mainly retirees, the volunteers upgrade donated computers, then give them to local schools, teachers, students and those who need a computer, but are unable to afford one. “The primary focus is to supply every student with the tools needed to compete in today's highly technological society,” founder Fremont “Freebie” Bassett said. To date, the organization has supplied those tools to more than 34,000 students. It also has set up computer labs in 25 Brevard County schools. Many of these young recipients have shown their appreciation with thank-you

notes, crowded onto a “bragging wall.” Bassett said businesses and individuals who donate the equipment make it possible, along with ample space generously provided by the school district. Bassett traced the organization's beginnings to 1997, when he was recovering from quadruple bypass surgery. Volunteer Barb Stewart introduces Copper, a red rat snake, to Market Street residents.

Wild animals entertain Market Street crowd BY JULIE STURGEON

Residents of Market Street Memory Care Residence had a wild visit in June when a group of native Florida animals stopped by. Hosted by the Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary, the animals provided an hour of education and enjoyment. A red-shouldered hawk named Quinn, along with a gopher tortoise named Lt. Dan and other indigenous species entertained residents during the visit. All the animals reside at the Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary, home to injured and orphaned native animals. “We have a small team of volunteers who travel with some of our resident animals (animals unable to be released) to summer camps, libraries, nursing facilities,” said Chelsea Hohlweg, volunteer coordinator for Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary. “It’s part of our Ambassador Program.” While most animals are released back into their habitat, some cannot be safely returned to their former homes. So, like the residents

at Market Street, they become part of another family. As she introduced Copper, a red rat snake, volunteer Linda Perry fielded a few questions from residents and told stories about the animals. Bella, a kestrel, had been kept as a pet. “Bella likes being around people because she imprinted on people at a very young age,” said Perry, noting that a kestrel is a small falcon. “It is illegal to have a native Florida bird as a pet.” Clearly the volunteers at Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary love what they do and have a passion for native animals and their welfare. “This is the best job I ever had and I am a volunteer,” said Perry, who handled each animal with ease. “Most of our staff are volunteers.” “We require all volunteers to complete an orientation and pay a $20 fee,” said Hohlweg. “After orientation, they can sign up for shifts.” The Florida Wildlife Hospital & Sanctuary, located at 4560 N. U.S. 1 Highway, operates primarily from donations and membership funds. VV
