LOFT sales associate Maegan Lammers, left, and manager Esther Buesing display a wreath for the holiday stroll that will benefit St. Jude Children's Hospital through Dec. 12 at participating stores across The Avenue Viera. BY KATIE PARSONS
Looking for a way to get in the holiday spirit ― and give back too? Through Dec. 12, shoppers at The Avenue Viera can bid on wreaths decorated by merchants to benefit the St. Jude Children’s Foundation. The artificial wreaths are
being provided by LOFT as part of parent company ANN INC.’s partnership with the children’s cancer hospital, which never turns a sick child away based on ability to pay. Participating merchants at The Avenue Viera can decorate the wreath any way they like, and add additional
goodies like products or gift cards. Shoppers can add their bids to a sheet of paper located near the wreaths in each individual store. Winners will be notified after Dec. 12. On Dec. 9, a wreath stroll at The Avenue Viera will take place involving all of the participating merchants.
Each location will offer something seasonal and special for shoppers. At sponsoring store LOFT, a hot chocolate bar will be available. “The wreath stroll is just a way to bring awareness

Chopper ride is 5K fest prize BY LINDA WIGGINS
The second annual Color Me Healthy 5K & Fun Run Saturday, Jan. 7 promises to be an even more motivating way to start off the year on the right foot with a grand prize of a 30-minute helicopter ride for three over Viera/Suntree and from the St. Johns River to the beaches and back. Hosted by the Viera Voice, the 8 a.m. event is a benefit for the Bluewater Foundation, which counts bettering the lives of children high on its mission priorities. The foundation will partner with the Suntree YMCA to provide health club memberships to children in low-income families and raise awareness of the capital campaign underway to build the Viera YMCA. More than 300 runners started and ended at Jack Mahon Park last year, traversing Spyglass Hill Road through Suntree and Viera, cutting in and out of partnering neighborhoods, trading high-fives with Suntree residents helping with traffic control, and accessing private roads in Viera with views of nature preserves, waterfront and wildlife. “It's an absolutely gorgeous course. Everything runners could want, and lots of fun, free entertainment for family members and friends rooting them on,” said Running Zone's Don Piercy, who mapped out the course last

year that has drawn raves from runners. More than 1,000 people took part in the festivities, including runners and families, volunteers, attraction providers, sponsors and exhibitors. It was a win for the Suntree Master Homeowners Association, location sponsor of the event. “We were looking for a 5K event that residents could really claim as their own and feel part of as we benefit the community together in the north part of the community,” said Kaye McKinney, SMHA community relations director. “We are still hearing great things from homeowners and they can't wait for it to come around again.” It was the right time to pick children as beneficiaries through the YMCA , said the
event organizer. “There has never been a more important time to give children healthy physical activities to cut back on playing video games and other sedentary electronics,” said Viera Voice publisher Jill Blue-Gaines, founder and board president of Bluewater Foundation. “It's hard enough when you are a parent with means, but for children whose families need assistance, it takes a community.” VV Free festival activities for children and families run through 11 a.m. and are open to the public. All attendees get a ticket for the chopper ride drawing. For more information on sponsoring the event or providing an attraction, call 321-242-1235. Charlotte Corbeil, flanked by student volunteers Layla Severence, left, and Angelina Gaffey, are gearing up for the 2017 Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards children's art, photo and essay contest, which kicks off with a Viera Wetlands tour Feb. 18. BY LINDA WIGGINS
Children and their parents can save the date to tour the Viera Wetlands Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 and gain inspiration for the Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards youth art, photo and essay contest. The tour will be led by Wetlands Ranger Ivan Green, a friend of the late Corbeil and fellow nature photographer and Florida Master Naturalist. Families can find out more about the tour and the contest and children can enjoy nature-inspired arts and crafts at the Jan. 7, 2017 Color Me Healthy 5K & Fun Run from 8 to 11 a.m., see page 2. “There is nothing like seeing the wetlands in person and at the same time knowing what it is you are looking at, and the significance of the many animals you can see and the particular plants and settings there that they depend on to thrive,” said Green, who also has been involved with the organization of the Charlie Awards ― as they have come to be known in conservation circles ― as well as the selection of nominees. Tour participants will meet in the Viera Wetlands parking lot and depart for the tour at 8 a.m. The tour will last about two hours, more depending on the level of interaction. The organized tour is a valuable addition to the contest, said an event sponsor. “That was something that Charlie loved, to share the
wetlands with anyone who was interested in learning more, so it is perfect,” said Charlotte Corbeil, Charlie's widow and sponsor of the cash prizes for the contest. The Corbeils co-wrote a column called Parting Shot for the Viera Voice to accompany his photos. She resumed the column after Corbeil’s November 2013 death, now called Charlotte’s Web-Spinning Tales, and she invites budding photographers to supply the shots. Charlotte sponsors the contest in Charlie's memory. Submissions will be displayed at the April 14, 2017 Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards dinner at Heritage Isle Clubhouse and the following weekend April 22 and 23 at the Viera Wetlands Festival, of which Charlie Corbeil was a co-founder. Corbeil said she hopes winners will be inspired to use their winnings to further conservation projects or education. “It was a great way to reward these children, for them to come to the festival and get their check. But I think it is time to encourage them to delve in more deeply,” she added. The Viera Wetlands are at the west end of North Wickham Road on Charlie Corbeil Way. To register for the tour, email Green at ibgreen@cfl.rr.com. For more information about the youth photography, art and writing contest, go to TheCharlieAwards.org. VV

Major traffic improvements update due soon BY LINDA WIGGINS
Stay tuned for a major roadconstruction update from The Viera Company coming in January's Viera Voice. Motorists are experiencing what is hoped will be the storm before the calm as traffic tie-ups extend travel time east-west by as much as 30 minutes to drive one mile, possibly due in part to a shortened left-turn pocket for entrance onto Interstate 95. While traffic has begun to flow under I-95 in two of the three lanes of the new southern section of the under pass, work in the center lanes of Wickham Road and redirection of lanes eastbound present a challenge to motorists.
Ultimately, the four lanes of Wickham Road will be expanded to six lanes, with generous turn pockets at major intersections. The construction completion target has most recently been set for the end of 2016, but that target date will be officially updated in the news release. No changes are planned for the Viera roundabout into which the three lanes of traffic will enter/exit. While the center of the roundabout is home to a stately oak tree purposely relocated from surrounding Duda ranch land that is now Viera, the intersection is a source of a growing number of complaints from drivers unsure of how to drive in it

despite clear markings. “It was already designed to accommodate six lanes of traffic, with each leg having a slip lane,” Viera Company spokewoman Nina Salvaggio said. “The existing design provides the needed space for the new six lanes at Wickham Road. The driving pattern into and out of the roundabout will not change after the six-laning is complete, however, the completion of the Wickham Road improvement and other factors will improve traffic flow through the roundabout.” The current widening of Wickham Road is being fully funded by The Viera Company, Salvaggio said. Viera’s Rousseau goes back-to-back at state diving meet BY CARL KOTALA
Sarah Rousseau has done it again. The Viera High diver made school history last year when she became just the second person — and the first girl — in the Hawks’ swimming and diving program to win a gold medal at the Class 3A state meet. Now the junior is the first individual in the history of the entire school to win back-toback state championships. Rousseau scored 463.25 points in the 1-meter diving competition at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart, easily outdistancing Olivia Ricard, a talented sophomore from Gulf Coast High School, who totaled 418.75. “I was just happy, thankful and very excited for the opportunity,” Rousseau said. That’s Sarah Rousseau for you. Where some people might become a little cocky with success, she is about as humble as they come. The 16-year-old also keeps
quite the schedule, training four hours a day, five days a week while also taking virtual honors and AP classes. “What impresses me most about Sarah is her dedication to the sport of diving,” Viera High diving coach Randy Just wrote in an email. “She willingly puts in long hours at practice. Not only does she put in in many hours at the pool, but she also spends hours in dry land training, conditioning and weight lifting.” Just is one of three coaches Rousseau works with. Bill Talbot of Sunrise Springboard Diving in Satellite Beach first started working with Rousseau eight years ago when she was introduced to the sport and even predicted she would win a state title one day. She also works with Yaidel Gamboa, who is now the head diving coach at Florida Atlantic University. After finishing fifth at the state meet as a freshman, Rousseau broke through last year when she joined another
diver, Luke Zippi (2009), as the only members of the Viera High swimming and diving program to win a gold medal. That should have given her a world of confidence going into this year’s state meet, but Rousseau said her approach didn’t change. “Anything can happen during a meet, so I went in with the same mindset like last year,” she said, adding, “I could have done better on some of my dives, but overall it was still a pretty good meet.” Though she hasn’t contemplated going for a three-peat, Rosseau has started to think about where she would like to go to college, mentioning unofficial trips to Florida State and North Carolina and possible trips to Alabama and Texas. And after winning the preliminaries and reaching the semifinals in the 1-meter springboard at the AT&T USA Diving Nationals in Moultrie, Ga. this summer, she’s even contemplating making a future run at the Olympics.
VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala
Viera High's Sarah Rousseau won her second state diving championship last month, making her the first individual athlete in school history to win back-to-back state titles.
Right now, with no major meets until February, she’s just concentrating on getting better. “Sarah is humble and talented,” Just said. “She is a great teammate. We are fortunate at Viera to have a whole diving team that is talented and supports each other. They set the bar very high for one another.” VV
Holy Trinity soccer teams will have a new look this season BY CARL KOTALA
There will be plenty of new faces around the Holy Trinity boys and girls soccer programs this season. But the ultimate expectations for success are still the same. The Holy Trinity boys, who lost 13 seniors from last year’s team that reached the Class 1A Final Four, have a number of new players on the roster and a new style of play to go with them. Holy Trinity’s girls, meanwhile, have a new coach in Joey Messina who is also changing the way the Tigers will play. “I really want to teach the girls to play possessive soccer, how to press and win the ball,” said Messina, who is switching to the 4-42 diamond formation this season. “I have a lot of young kids. In the long run, it will pay off. I really believe in possessive soccer. That’s a huge part of my soccer philosophy.” Sarah Braddock, now in her fifth year of varsity soccer, will play a big role for the Tigers along with eighthgrader Piper McHenry and

freshmen Lauryn Gayles and Kailey Dunne. Holy Trinity has won four consecutive district titles and now that she’s a senior, Braddock is hoping the team will be able to adjust to the new formation well enough to keep that streak alive. “The first year I was on varsity was our first district
championship,” she said. “I want to leave with a district championship, too.” With so many new players, a trip back to the final four might seem out of reach for Holy Trinity’s boys team. However, thanks to a strategy where the Tigers groomed their JV team to play a more possessive style of soccer last
year, the new players have come to the varsity ready to go. With junior Carlo Campanini expected to play more of a defensive role this season, Holy Trinity should be solid in the back with attacking players like Bryce Wahy making life difficult for opponents. “We’ve definitely had to adjust, but I think one of the best parts is how a lot of the younger boys that we have definitely stepped up this year,” Wahy said. “I think we definitely have just as good a chance as last year of getting as far as we did.” Other Tigers to follow this season will be juniors Jack Ganiban and Bryon Cha. Ludovico Martinenghi, a junior foreign exchange student from Italy, will help in the midfield. In addition to Campanini, the defense will be led by seniors Connor Dunne, Thomas Baez and Zane Chandler-Rogero, who takes over as goalkeeper. “We’ll be tough to beat with Carlo in the back,” Holy Trinity coach James Phillips said. “I’m interested to see how far we can go.” VV

The Viera High boys and girls soccer teams will be similar this season in that both will be adjusting to slightly different lineups that they hope will pay off big at the end of the season. “We have talent, so that’s key,” said Viera girls coach Courtney Lundy. “I think, to be honest, they are a true team. The way they treat each other on and off the field, it’s comfortable.” Lundy’s Hawks, of course, have a chance to do something no other soccer team in the history of Brevard County has done — win three consecutive state championships. Viera graduated four players — including starters Jordan Walsh, Sarah Kelliher and Sarah Sanford — from last year’s team that became just the fifth in county history to win back-to-back state titles. So while there is plenty of experience coming back, there will also be an adjustment to a slightly new lineup. While Hannah Howe has moved into the defensive lineup, the remaining positions will be filled by Emily Bodi and a combination of Cori Fisher or Hannah Vega. Other key newcomers for the girls include Taylor Collins and Malia Brock. They’ll join a potent lineup that features Hollyn Knight, Brooke Walsh and JJ Bryant and perhaps the county’s

best goalkeeper, Sydney Lau. “The freshmen that came up and the rookies now, they’re good,” Knight said. “They’re good coming off the bench. We have a good, solid 20 (players).” Viera’s boys, meanwhile, lost six seniors from a team that was in position to upset perennial district favorite Melbourne in last year’s district semifinals. Nick Robinson, who joined the staff last season, has taken over as the Hawks new head coach and said Viera will be a more technical team than it was last season, when it relied more on its athleticism and physicality. The Hawks will have plenty of experience in the back with Max Pacheaco in goal and Ryan Szymkowiak and co-captain Ian Spradlin playing in the back. They’ll also have talent up front with sophomore Nathan Brooker, senior Charlie McHale and cocaptain Andrew Madlener. But with a team that also features three freshmen and three sophomores (including

Holy Trinity physics teacher utilizes drones donated by Harris BY CARL KOTALA
Holy Trinity students Emilio Roig and Eric Jaffe are simply trying to play a simple game of catch … And it’s not going well. That’s because the students are throwing a volleyball back and forth while sitting on a homemade Vomitron built by physics teacher Trevor Herntier, which spins them around in a circle and makes the ball curve in midair, thereby making a game of catch a rough proposition. But is the ball really curving? Flying above the students is a drone, piloted by Holy Trinity student Chris Farid. It’s one of five drones donated to the school by the Harris Corporation this fall and with its onboard camera, it will give Herntier a chance to teach his students things he couldn’t do otherwise. “I can have a Go-Pro strapped to their chest, so we can see what it looks like from a rider on the Vomitron and that ball looks like it curves,” Herntier said. “But it doesn’t. “Until I had the drones, there was no way I could prove to them that the ball doesn’t curve. from above like that, I can trace the ball on a video and I can say, ‘Look, the dots are in a straight line.’ It’s a really startling video.” Herntier, who has been at the school for five years and teaches five sections of physics, will get a better idea of how many different ways he can use the drones (and their payload delivery systems) once he has a chance to work with them during the summer. Outdoor classroom helps children find themselves in nature BY LINDA WIGGINS
Nature lovers will have more to love starting Dec. 17 with the grand opening of the Nature Explore Classroom at Riverwalk — A Family Park on U.S. 1 just north of Viera. The Viera Company and other local businesses came together with Disney VoluntEARS from the cruise ship Disney Fantasy to launch creation of the outdoor attraction in late October courtesy of a $20,000 grant from Parks Build Community, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association and The Walt Disney Company, including Disney Citizenship, Disney/ABC Television Group and ESPN. The Parks Build Community program provides communities with resources to improve local parks through
projects that connect kids to nature, help kids and families live healthier lives and increase kids’ access to sports. Riverwalk was one of 16 such grant recipients chosen this year from across the country. “It helps to expand our resources and make them go further, to make things like the Nature Explore Classroom possible,” said Brandon Smith, park director and past recipient of the Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards. The awards, set for April 14, 2017, reward and encourage conservation efforts. The tandem children's art, photography and essay contest encourages children to find themselves in nature. In the end, they loved him too much to keep him. Sergio “the hugging duck,” as he was nicknamed when his story went viral on social media, was the darling of Suntree Elementary School teacher Jana Gabrielski's sixth-grade class last year. He roamed the classroom freely courtesy of a specially fitted diaper. He returned this school year, to the delight of his new classmates. But it became clear that it was only right that Sergio, who thought Gabrielski was his mother and his fellow students were his fledgling siblings, should be allowed to be a real duck. He was adopted by a family in North Brevard who have ducks like Sergio, a pond and a small menagerie of other farm animal pets. “Today is Sergio’s last day at Suntree,” Gabrielski told her students. The day was bittersweet. “He is going into his next phase of life, kind of like sending him off to college! His new home is a farm with very nurturing parents and three duck siblings-to-be: another Peking, a Swedish gray and a Rouen. I am sure he won’t forget his Suntree family and we won’t forget him.” Sergio was the only chick among 40-plus eggs to hatch last spring, thus he had no other ducks as a point of reference and so bonded to humans. His first sight of other real ducks was puzzling, but he took to them like a … well, duck … takes to water. And speaking of water, it was also his first adult experience
keep his kiddie pool clean and freshly filled, but he grew so big his webbed feet touched the bottom. Those wishing to keep abreast of Serio's duck tales won't be able to do so any longer on social media. Gabrielski's friend who adopted Sergio wishes to remain anonymous so that Sergio — and their family — can live a quiet life. The saga continues, however. Gabrielski's class will be back in the chicken and duck hatching business this spring. VV

Book born on Facebook is perfect Chanukah, Christmas gift BY LINDA WIGGINS
Kandi M. Siegel was scrolling along on her Facebook page when she noticed a post from her longtime friend and fellow educator, Maxine Lauer, who had retired from Suntree Elementary School and had started her own business, Chips Galore Cookies and More. “Bubby the Baker!” posted a mutual friend, Susan Rothenberg, using the Yiddish word for grandmother, which also describes Lauer. “That's a perfect title for a book and I want to write it. Mind if I use it?” Siegel posted, to an enthusiastic yes response. Thus was born Siegel's seventh book, targeted to preschoolers and first graders about Lauer and a bakery storefront from Siegel's imagination, detailing all the decorative treats and having word fun with each name. Fans of Siegel's books and Lauer's treats can enjoy both at the Chanukah Bazaar from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Dec. 4 at Temple Israel in Viera. The event is open to all faiths and is a popular shopping destination for religious items reflected in the Bible's Old Testament, known in the Jewish faith simply as the Holy Scriptures. It is the place where Siegel and Lauer coincidentally worship. Siegel was recently lauded there as a children's author, with beloved Rabbi
Patricia Hickman reading aloud from Bubby's pages. “I have never felt so honored in my life,” Siegel said. If the book was born on Facebook, it was raised at Starbucks, on U.S. 1 south of Suntree, Siegel's favorite place in the world to write while she sips. Fall festival fun adds up to higher tech teaching BY LINDA WIGGINS
The Suntree Elementary School Fall Community Festival Nov. 5 raised about $14,000. About $6,000 of it will go directly to classrooms for teacher-initiated projects, including covering costs for extras for students of lowincome families. The PTO, which organizes the festival, will earmark the remaining $8,000 toward adding new, and updating outdated, technology. “Right now, teachers in grades three to six rotate the carts so that students have a laptop one to two days per week,” principal Mecheall Giombetti said. “Obviously, if we are to prepare students to compete and thrive in a high tech world, it's pretty important that we teach them on computers, and current ones.” It was her last school festival, as she will retire at the end of the year. Thousands attend Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival BY LINDA WIGGINS
Great weather, prizes and creative scarecrows were possible reasons attendance at the Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival at The Avenue Viera Oct. 22 topped last year's record attendance of more than 2,000 visitors. Winners were announced from the community stroll portion of the event held Oct. 6 through 20, a drawing from among those who saw all 36 'crows. Ray and Rosanne Bessenaire won first prize, choice of LEGOLAND fourpack of tickets or $1,800 in tickets to Sky Zone trampoline center. Marcia, Sean and daughter Marlee “Pepper” Jeddrie won the second prize choice. Wild coincidence: out of the hundreds of Scarecrow Stroll participants, Rosanne and Marcia just happen to work at the same place, Space Coast Lymphedema Clinic on Spyglass Hill Road in Viera, and are close friends. So, they decided among themselves who took what. Pepper is a big fan of Sky Zone, and she was the one behind getting the whole family to tour the Scarecrow Stroll. Three Viera High Business and Finance Academy students recently got a unique perspective on what it takes to be a good leader from experts on both the national and local levels. Sophomores Kaitlyn Levon, Chancellor McGriff and Caitlin Carter attended the Live2Lead Leadership Development Conference at Heritage Isle. Pizza Gallery owner Chris Conneen co-hosted the event and not only invited, but sponsored the Viera High students' attendance. Barbara Kelly, the director of the Academies at Viera, said the three students were picked by their teachers because of their leadership qualities. Hurricane Matthew forced postponement of the event in Brevard County, so attendees watched a recorded simulcast of the national presentation. Still, with a panel that included John C. Maxwell (leadership expert and best-selling author), Simon Sinek (optimist and author), Liz Wiseman (researcher, executive advisor and president of the Wiseman Group) and Dan Cathy (chairman, president and
CEO of Chick-fil-A) the students were able to get plenty of insight. “Some people said there are two things that leaders need — empathy and perspective — VIERA VOICE Courtesy of Viera High Viera High students Caitlin Carter, left, Kaitlyn empathy being, you Levon, teacher Barbara Kelly and Chancellor have to take care of McGriff recently took part in the Live2Lead those people who are Leadership Development Conference. in your charge and “I’m currently trying to bring them to their restart DECA (a business club) natural best,” McGriff said. “And if they’re not performing at my school and I can use a lot of what I learned.” correctly, or they’re not Carter, learned new ideas performing right, understand about how to help. why. “I like to work with my “And for perspective, it’s classmates a lot and help not about winning or losing them to succeed,” she said. in business. A New Approach to Hip Replacement
Kenneth Sands, MD – First Choice Medical Group
Rediscover the life you had before hip pain If you are considering hip replacement surgery, you may be interested in an innovative technique called the Anterior (or front) Approach. The Anterior Approach for hip replacement surgery may allow you to be up on your feet and back to your active life faster than with traditional hip replacement. Thanks to a small incision made at the front of your hip joint, rather than the typical side or back incision, you may have a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, less postoperative pain, immediate stability of the hip after surgery and a lower risk for dislocation. So you can get back in the game faster. There are potential risks with any surgery and results can vary. Recovery takes time and depends on factors like activity level, weight and age. If you would like to learn more about this innovative technique, contact:

Elections are finally over. After a long and hard-to-watch campaign, we all survived and may breathe in relief that we are past that period. The results, well, not everyone is pleased with the outcome — like it is in any election — but as far as the environment is concerned, we had two important local victories that, despite the prognostic of changes at the federal level, will greatly help to improve local conditions. The first great victory was the rejection of Amendment 1, the Consumers for Smart Solar deceiving amendment that pretended to be pro-solar but was anything but. The utility companies put about $26 million toward that campaign. However, pro-solar citizens and volunteers pushed back by educating the community and voting against the amendment. In the end, the measure was defeated by 54 percent in Brevard; 49 percent in Florida. That victory opens up the market for solar companies and for initiatives like the FL SUN (flsun.org), a project of Community Power Network and the Florida League of Women Voters. As part of its plan of expanding access to solar, FL SUN has developed solar co-ops to help more residents transition to solar and has been holding informational meetings in Brevard. The other great victory was the passing of the Save Our Lagoon Referendum that increases our sales tax by a half-cent for 10 years for funding the Save Our Lagoon Project Plan. Funds collected will help Brevard County bring our lagoon back to health. Those two are reasons for celebration. At the federal level, though, there are indications of tougher times ahead of us as we learn about transition teams and action plans.

As The New York Times reported, Myron Ebell, whose organization is financed in part by the coal industry, was the person Presidentelect Donald Trump chose to lead the transition at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and be the “lead agent in choosing personnel and setting the direction of the federal agencies that address climate change and environmental policy more broadly.” His organization “questions global warming alarmism, opposes energy-rationing policies, and EPA regulation of greenhouse gas emissions,” as well as “all government mandates and subsidies for conventional and alternative energy technologies.” With the prospect of having Ebell leading the EPA, we should be paying close attention to what is to come. In his 100-day action plan, Trump listed the following among his measures to address “real environmental challenges, not phony ones”: • Rescind the Climate Action Plan and the Waters of the U.S. rule. • Save the coal industry and other threatened industries. • Ask Trans Canada to renew its permit application for the Keystone Pipeline. • Revoke policies that impose unwarranted restrictions on new drilling technologies. • Cancel the Paris Climate Agreement and stop all payments of U.S. tax dollars to U.N. global warming programs. • Scrap any regulation that
is outdated, unnecessary, bad for workers or contrary to the national interest. • Eliminate duplication, provide regulatory certainty and trust local officials and local residents. • Any future regulation will go through a simple test: is this regulation good for the American worker? If it doesn’t pass this test, the rule will not be approved. We don’t know exactly what those actions mean and how they would be implemented, but one has to hope environmental experts and scientists will be consulted and heard. And this is what we need most right now — not only our leaders, but all of us: to hear and be heard. If we give each other a chance to talk, we may find common ground on many issues. There is a lot that can be accomplished through open dialog and, for the sake of the next generation, we must start honest, respectful conversation. In her 2010 TED Talk, Take The Other to Lunch, Elizabeth Lesser calls for “civility and understanding as we negotiate our differences as human beings.” She suggests that everyone should "take the other to lunch" and get to know the “other side” in order to find a middle ground and be able to work toward solutions together. As conversation guidelines she lists sharing life experiences, enumerating issues that deeply concern each party, and asking something about the other party that one always wanted to know. That should be a start and hopefully a practice in all realms of society, especially politics where the dialog is long overdue. So how about lunch? V V Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@3RsAndBeyond.org.

For the second year in a row, band director Jim McCarl’s Advanced Percussion class will perform a commissioned original piece composed by Brian Slawson, a Julliardeducated, Grammy-nominated artist and Brevard Symphony Orchestra principal timpanist. “I think it’s awesome,” senior drummer Jordan Vines said of the piece, which is called “When You Hear the Drum.” “It’s not (one of those) traditional, regular old Christmas tunes that you always hear. Veterans, children and teens win as golfers Swing for Charity The Viera Woman's Club cleared more than $10,000 in its Swing for Charity golf tournament at Duran Golf Club Nov. 4 and Par-TEE dinner party afterward at the Tradewinds Restaurant. The General Federation of Women's Clubs affiliate split the funds between National Veteran’s Homeless Support Inc., The Children’s Hunger Project and Hacienda Girls’ Ranch. “It was such a fun day for golfers,” said Judy DeAngelis, co-chair of the event with Eloise Lynaugh. “Prizes, prizes, prizes! Dixon Golf manned two holes providing players with challenges for charity. We also had a holein-one contest with a golf cart as a prize from GolfCarts Unlimited. Players could

McCarl, who had just started the Advanced Percussion class, asked Slawson to come in and work with the students. That led to Slawson being commissioned to write an original piece called “Christmas Day” that was performed at last year’s concert. It has been published and is available for purchase world-wide. “That piece last year was very melodic, and chimes and sleigh bells, very what you would expect from Christmas. An original tune,” Slawson said. “This year, I thought I’d take a couple of traditional (pieces), the real old French stuff — the chants and hymns from centuries ago — and I’d

SUNTREENews Suntree Winter Festival features fun for all ages at Jack Mahon Park BY WENDY SCHEURING
Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles of young children who love the holiday season. Now is the time to get some holly jolly holiday spirit. The Suntree Master Homeowners Association invites all to come to the Suntree Winter Festival, a free, family-fun event to be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday Dec. 3 at Jack Mahon Park, 7550 Spyglass Hill Road in Suntree. As usual, Santa will make his yearly appearance to hear all of the children’s naughty or nice holiday wishes starting at 4:15 p.m. A Santa story time will be featured where children young and old will gather ‘round to hear Jolly Ole Nick recite the classic, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” at 4:30 p.m. This year’s event features new activities and

entertainment. In addition to a wide offering of winter activities and games, there will be a cookie decorating table sponsored by Remax Absolute. Children can get their exercise by jumping in the bounce houses set up on the lawn. A new and special activity this year will be a snow slide where the young can squeal with delight as they land in "fake" snow at
the bottom. This year’s event also features a dance party with holiday music, “where kids can dance beneath the flurries,” said Heather Murdoch, SMHA Parks and Recreation Committee chair. Uno Pizzeria & Grill, the presenting sponsor, will cater delicious foods and drinks for purchase. And, of course, one could not host such an event without hot chocolate. The SMHA invites all to attend this neighborhood event and is expecting 500 to 750 attendees. Located between several northern Suntree neighborhoods, the park can be easily accessed by walkers and bike riders. The SMHA parking lot will be closed during the event. But, grass parking is available across the street from the park. Additional run-off parking will be available on Autumn Glen Drive. VV For more information, call the offices at 321-242-8960.

p o o c BUSINESSS Charity-friendly restaurant more than what's in the name
SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE
Uno Pizzeria & Grill is known for more than the name implies, according to staff. Located on Wickham Road in Viera across from the Brevard Zoo, the restaurant has created unique events as it creates a strong presence in the community and finds creative ways to benefit charities that make the community even stronger. Their popular Dough Raisers allow charities to organize supporters to dine in and the nonprofit receives 20 percent of the check as a donation. Likewise, the restaurant can operate off site with a food truck and 20 percent of food sales at fundraising events and festivals go to the host nonprofit. The restaurant is an approved caterer for the Brevard Zoo, the Henegar Center, Exploration Tower
and many more locations throughout Brevard. The staff works with doctor’s offices and other businesses delivering orders. Personal, business storage location opens in Suntree
BY KATIE PARSONS
Suntree and Viera residents now have more 24/7 access to storage options — for personal and business needs. Suntree Viera Business and Storage Center opened in September at 7285 Waelti Drive. The location offers 68 drive-up mini-storage units in 5x12, 10x12 and 10x15 sizes. There are parking spaces for boats, campers, semis and other large vehicles that may not meet HOA standards in driveways. Several small businesses have taken advantage of the 30,000 square feet of space.
There is currently just one more 4,000-square foot warehouse unit still available for rent. Property owner Bryan Moffit is also the proprietor of Advantage Concrete of Florida, which shares the property with the storage business. “We’ve already seen such a great response from our customers in Suntree and Viera. We look forward to continuing to serve the community,” Moffit said. By the end of the year, the storage business will also be licensed to rent Budget trucks and trailers. Other expansion plans for 2017 are in the works. The business office is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and is closed on Sunday. Customers can access their storage and parking spaces 24/7. VV Learn more about the company by calling 321428-5444 or visiting www.Facebook.com/ SuntreeVieraStorage.

HGTV's "House Hunters" films Viera couple Rodney and Chira Gaines, and real estate agent Cartama Ramos-Crafton, not pictured, as the Gaineses search for a new home for an episode that aired on Thanksgiving Day and the morning after. BY MIKE GAFFEY
Cupid’s arrows have guided HGTV’s popular “House Hunters” show back to Viera. The cable TV reality series aired a rare sequel to an episode it presented in 2014, when then-single mom Chira Newton purchased a threebedroom Viera home with help from real estate agent Cartama Ramos-Crafton in Viera. The new half-hour episode, which aired on Thanksgiving Day and repeated the following day, focused on a romance that blossomed between Newton and Rodney Gaines and eventually led to marriage and the purchase of another residence, a fivebedroom home in Viera, said Tim Kirk, broker with International Advantage Realty in Viera. “It’s a whole level of reality to it not only with the house, but with the family and the relationship and how they met,” Kirk said. “House Hunters” follows people searching for a new home, with the assistance of a realtor. In each episode, buyers must choose between three available properties. The show ends with a follow-up visit to the new homeowners, who describe how the new home has affected their lives. The show attracts about 25 million viewers a month, according to the Washington Post. After the initial episode aired, Rodney Gaines, an Air Force veteran who owned a house in Palm Bay that had tenants, contacted Newton, whom he had met
while stationed at Patrick Air Force Base, about renting a home. Newton suggested that Gaines contact Ramos-Crafton, who eventually found a home that, unbeknownst to Gaines, turned out to be only five homes down from Newton’s residence. “Cartama told me and I said, ‘Do not put him next to me,’ ” Chira Gaines said with a laugh. “I was so serious.” Gaines, who has three children of his own, and Newton began dating in May 2014, and got married in October 2015. Chira Gaines said she contacted the show’s producers about her new marriage and blended family and need for a bigger house, and they decided to film a second episode. Kirk is proud of the role his real estate agency played in the reality TV love story. “It actually all happened through our company because we got Gaines the rental just down the road from the first one,” Kirk said. “It’s a very interesting story and I think that’s why HGTV held off until Thanksgiving to air it.” The Gaineses say they're thrilled with their new home, and they have another reason to celebrate: They were expecting a baby girl around the time the episode was to air. The family had a plan in place in case the new arrival made her debut on Thanksgiving night. “We’ll make sure we have the DVR running,” Gaines said in early November. VV

Yen Yen owner opens Tely’s Chinese Restaurant in Suntree BY MIKE GAFFEY
Tely Tse, the founder of popular Yen Yen Chinese Restaurant in Cocoa Beach, had been trying to open another restaurant in the Suntree area for about two decades. On Sept. 12, Tse achieved his longtime goal as Tely’s Chinese Restaurant opened at 6450 N. Wickham Road, No. 112, in the Promenade Shoppes of Suntree. “Most of my customers at Yen Yen were coming from the Suntree-Viera area and the Melbourne area, and they have been pushing me to have a restaurant over here,” Tse said. “So finally we secured a place in Suntree.” The new 80-seat location, which is smaller than the 150-seat Yen Yen, also offers a much different menu than that of the beachside eatery, which Tse opened in 1992. Customers can dine on such appetizers as seaweed salad
and main courses that feature chicken, duck, beef, pork, veal, seafood and shrimp dishes, all served on white linen tablecloths. “We try to offer something different and additional options for my customers, so they can enjoy better Chinese food,” said Tse, a New York native who opened his first Yen Yen restaurant in Brooklyn in 1988 and has operated restaurants in Cape Canaveral and Winter Springs. “I can have freedom to explore my cuisine and give customers more choices.” Customer response has been “very positive,” Tse said. “Everybody’s happy.” Tely’s Grand Marnier Shrimp dish already has emerged as a customer favorite, Tse said. “It’s a special recipe from Hong Kong,” he said. “We utilize Grand Marnier (an orangeflavored liqueur) to blend in during the cooking. The shimp is lightly marinated

It’s natural cooking. It’s very refreshing.” Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tely’s is closed Monday. Veterans display was a moving tribute to designer
BY LINDA WIGGINS
The Moving Tribute was the perfect centerpiece exhibit for the Veterans Muster during the Senior Life Boomer Bash & Senior Expo at The Avenue Viera Nov. 18. The nonprofit exhibit of Some Gave All, headquartered in Rockledge, is made up of 28-plus panels containing the growing list of names of U.S. soldiers who have lost their lives responding in the war on terror since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and also includes the names of nearly 3,000 lives lost that day. The graphic designer of the display is the current-day
community liaison for Indian River Colony Club in Viera, the sponsor of the Veterans Muster for the marketing and publishing firm hosting the expo, Bluewater Creative Group, which publishes Viera Voice and sister paper Senior Life. “It was very emotional,” IRCC staffer Maureen Reeder said. “At the time, it was very difficult doing the research and collecting all the names of those who lost their lives on 9/11. They had never been collected all together in one place yet.” The Veterans Muster was a twist on the traditional Veterans Salute that Bluewater hosts each year

just before or after Veterans Day. “This year, Veterans Day fell on the Friday we normally use, but we wanted to delay our event and promote all the veterans salutes that occur on Nov. 11,” Bluewater CEO Jill Blue-Gaines said. The Veterans Muster featured active-military and veterans exhibits throughout the day and closed with an actual Veterans Muster, or calling together, ceremony with speakers Norman Moody, an award-winning writer on veterans issues and new columnist for Senior Life's Stripes veterans section, and IRCC resident and community leader
retired USMC Lt. Gen. Robert Winglass. It’s time to talk about safety during the holidays BY SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY
Regardless if you are arriving at the mall, leaving the grocery store or restaurant, you are going to find yourself in the parking lot. How we approach and depart the VIERA VOICE Photo business can Sheriff Wayne Ivey help keep us safe from harm. The following tips are important to keep you and your passengers safe:
PARKING LOT SAFETY
1. Avoid driving alone or at night. When possible, shop with family or friends as there is safety in numbers. 2. If shopping at night, look for well-lighted areas to park. 3. Park as close to the business as you can to limit exposure to criminals. 4. If traveling from store to store, make sure packages and other valuables are secured in the trunk when possible and not in open view. 5. When leaving the store, ask security or management to walk out with you. 6. Never carry packages that obstruct your view or make you unable to defend yourself if necessary. 7. Once in your vehicle,
vieravoice.com
immediately leave the parking lot so you are not a sitting target for criminals. 8. Have cell phones and car keys immediately accessible in case of an emergency. 9. Make sure that when patronizing an ATM, no one is following you. Criminals will watch the ATM and then rob you in an isolated area or when arriving home. Once inside the store, we need to shift our prevention focus to not becoming the victim of credit card fraud or other types of scams. The following ideas will help protect you against having your credit compromised or having money taken from you through a scam or larceny.
SHOPPING SAFETY
1. Have a list of your credit card numbers safely secured at your residence in case you have your wallet, purse or credit cards stolen. The list will aid you when canceling the cards or supplying information to law enforcement. 2. Never allow a waiter or customer service representative to walk away with your credit card where it can be secretly skimmed. When dining out, ask the server if you can pay at the cash register instead of allowing your credit card to leave your sight. 3. If your credit card is equipped with RFID chips, keep the credit card
in a protective sleeve designed to prevent it from being cloned. 4. When writing checks, never leave your checkbook on the counter where others can see the routing numbers at the bottom. Always protect your checks and credit cards against someone shoulder surfing. 5. When completing instant credit applications, ask the customer service representative what measures they use to protect your identity from being compromised. 6. Beware of strangers approaching you or asking for money. Also be careful of the various scams that criminals use during the holiday season. 7. When shopping online, only shop with secure sites that offer increased protection for the consumer. Look for the padlock logo at the bottom of the screen. 8. Beware of too good to be true online bargains and sales that are with companies you are unfamiliar with. 9. Consider having an identity theft protection service that can notify you if someone is trying to establish a line of credit in your name.
SHOPPING WITH CHILDREN
As we are all aware, this time of the year is fast paced and brings large volumes of shoppers to the malls and retail stores. Please keep the following measures in mind as you and your children patronize the various stores in our community:
1. Always pre-arrange a safety plan with your children if separated. Never assume they will know what to do. Establish a central meeting place that everyone knows is a safe zone. 2. Teach small children the importance of asking store security or law enforcement for help. 3. If possible, leave small children at home in a safe environment with a trusted sitter. 4. Never allow children to leave your sight even to go to the restroom alone. 5. Make sure children have your cell number in case they are separated. They can give your number to security and always make sure your ringer is turned on. 6. Never leave children unattended in the car so they can play video games or do other activities. 7. Never leave children alone in the food court or arcade area. 8. Teach children the importance of staying by your side when shopping. 9. Make sure that when leaving the business, all kids walk safely through the parking lot and are not running in between cars or out of sight. Hopefully, the above safety tips will help keep you, your children and your possessions safe during the holiday season. VV From all of us at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

Pet of the Month
VIERA VOICE Brett Pigon
The northern cardinal is the official bird of seven states.
Telling tales about special holiday creatures Several creatures brighten the holiday season through symbolic ornaments, songs, literature or special cards. Apparently, birds are quite special. For example, the vibrant red northern cardinal graces holiday cards. It is the official bird of seven states. Although notorious for obsessively smashing into windows while pursuing its bright reflection, it rarely suffers injuries. Actually, it believes it is protecting its territory. The European robin (robin redbreast) is featured in England at holiday time. During Victoria’s reign, British postmen wore red-breasted coats and were identified as “Robins.” Subsequently, the robin bird embellished holiday cards. The trend spread to stamps, ornaments, chocolate boxes, wrapping paper, cakes and more. The American robin, named after the European robin, is remotely related. Seven species of birds are presented in the cumulative carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” It was published in England in 1780 (without music as a chant or rhyme) but thought to be of French origin. Let us meet these creatures: A partridge in a pear tree is presumably the red-legged partridge (French partridge) since it does perch; other partridges are usually ground nesters. The unity of a pair of partridges symbolizes ultimate good. Two turtle doves have a strong pair bond and represent devoted love. They emit distinctive mournful vocalizations. More familiar are white doves which symbolize peace. Three French hens project faith, hope and love. Four calling birds were originally called colly birds, which means “black as coal.” They are European blackbirds, thrushes. In medieval times, blackbirds were placed in an already baked potpie crust and released for entertainment at a meal. Five golden rings are possibly five male ring-necked pheasants, formerly from Asia. A distinctive white ring adorns the neck. Males are vibrant in color, and females are overall brown. South Dakota chose this pheasant for the state bird. Six geese a-laying eggs which

are symbolic of birth, life and rebirth. Not to be forgotten is the delectable “Christmas goose” fattened in time for the holiday dinner, sometimes on a diet of of beet pulp and rolled barley. Geese have soft fat which is a delicacy — often poured on pancakes. Hopefully, these birds are never cruelly force-fed for foie gras (fatty liver). Seven swans a-swimming are symbolic of love and fidelity because of their monogamous relationships. Occasionally, they may cause injuries with their beaks and wings while protecting nesting areas. Swan meat was a luxury food during the reign of Elizabeth I of England; it was prepared with lard and butter. Let us not forget insects as tree ornaments for the yuletide. The butterfly, renown in its metamorphosis, suggests navigating a major transition in one’s life. A spider implies weaving wishes into reality. The ladybug, a beetle, is a great “live” ornament which eats aphids living in the holiday tree. The American song “Jingle Bells” was originally published in 1857 as “One Horse Open Sleigh” and later associated with the holidays. It reminds us of the draft horse (meaning to draw or haul). On the farm, this work horse is used for chores such as plowing. Besides, it is docile and capably performs under saddle. The mouse, a superb research animal or pet, deserves its place in holiday literature. “Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse” is a line from “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” which was originally published in 1823 as “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Presumably, this poem has the best-known verses written by an American. However, the author is disputed. And a great holiday to all! VV Haiku by Hailey Scalia, 9 Hi there Ladybug! Pretty little ornament Red like holidays
