Students will be exchanging cards, creating arts and crafts and snacking on sweet treats at local elementary schools in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Several area schools have extra special events planned this month. At Suntree Elementary, students will perform acts of kindness in observance of Valentine’s Day. During the week of Feb. 12, Suntree’s 35 kindness ambassadors
will pass out kindness notes, stamps, stickers and other items. The kindness ambassadors are part of the Kindness Club, which started in December. According to Suntree teacher Tracy Seibert, “Kindness Club’s mission statement is to create a culture where Suntree students work together without judgement or reservation to create a kindness culture at Suntree Elementary School.” Each week, the Kindness Club highlights a “Kindness

Challenge,” in which students have helped out in the classroom, on campus, or in the community, with gestures such as making cards for members of assisted living facilities or painting rocks with kindness messages. “On the morning Sun News each week, we spotlight a new Kindness Challenge such as sharing, helping or caring,” Seibert said. “Students across the campus work at challenging themselves throughout the week.”

New church completes dream for St. John the Evangelist faithful BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER
Passionate, yet massive music playing to the glory of God rose up from the choir loft and filled the sanctuary of the new St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Viera beginning the dedication Mass on Jan. 20. The $7 million building, constructed in the basilica style, seats 1,050 worshippers in gently
curving red oak pews for the five planned weekly Sunday Masses. The pews were packed with parishioners. “This has been our dream and it has been so great to happen,” said the Rev. John Britto, one of two priests from the congregation of the Holy Cross. “A special type of technology was used in the building. The building itself is not the grandeur type of church, but at the same time
there is a graciousness to it.” The Most Rev. John Noonan, Bishop of Orlando, was the presider of the liturgy for the dedication with the Most Rev. Bernard J. Harrington, Bishop Emeritus of Winona, as the concelebrating bishop. The celebration day was selected on Jan. 20 for “it is the feast day of Basil Anthony Moreau, founder of the congregation of the Holy

Cross and we belong to that order, so it is appropriate that we have it on that day for it is very prominent on our calendar,” Britto said. The service included the Catholic Mass adding gestures and symbolism and a key entrusted to Noonan. The regular readings, homily and creed were cited with singing of the litany of the saints. Noonan placed the relics of the priests’ saints in the altar and smeared the altar with baptism oil. Incense rose up toward heaven as so may the “prayers go to heaven and raise to the lord,” Britto said. Following the dedication, a reception was held in the educational building on campus where services had been held before the new church was constructed. From the time the parish first formed in 2001, the church has gone from 200 to 2,300 families, according to the Rev. R. Bradley Beaupre, who has been with the church for 9½ years and is planning his retirement. The church’s 19,000 square feet has a 58-foot high nave ceiling with an
intricate double barrel vault of curving planes like traditional basilicas drawing the eye upward and toward the east-facing rose window and altar wall in the sanctuary. Twelve of the large arched windows and smaller clerestory windows will feature stained glass, installed behind hurricane-impact glass in the steel-framed structure to withstand Category 5 hurricane-force winds. “It takes two months for each window to be made,” Britto said. “Trying to bring in all the aspects of John, we have 12 windows to be stained glass and 12 statements we have drawn out of the Gospel of John.” Thrilled with the new church, a couple parishioners shared their thoughts. “I have been here all week and every time I come in here (sanctuary) I cry,” said Gloria Teed, a church usher. “It is spectacular.” “I have been waiting for this a long time since we were meeting in the government building,” added Jacqueline Tsarnas, a parishioner from Viera. Everyone’s wild about Valentine’s Day at the Brevard Zoo BY MARIA SONNENBERG
We humans might think we have the sweetheart thing wrapped up as our very own, but some residents of Brevard Zoo beg to differ. In fact, many of these loving couples have been together for decades and have no plan to leave each other. Take Tiki and Gizmo, for example. The names of the two scarlet macaws might connote a progressive couple of the same gender, but these are a boy and girl pair definitely beak over claws in love with each other. Tiki, the handsome guy, is 20, and in the prime of youth for a macaw. Gizmo, his main gal, is 19. Their love is allencompassing and abiding. “They have been together since 1999,” said Elliot Zirulnik, communications manager at the zoo. These childhood sweethearts are as passionate for each other as they were when they first laid eyes on each other just out of fledglinghood. Like any other lovey-dovey couple, they have their ways of showing affection.

VIERA VOICE Courtesy of the Brevard Zoo
Tiki and Gizmo have been together since 1999 at the Brevard Zoo.
“They sometimes preen each other’s feathers,” Zirulnik said. Macaws, unlike many celebrities currently on the hot seat for sexual peccadilllos, are monogamous and mate for life. When they outlive their mate, they are heartbroken. However, don’t fret about the future of this handsome pair, for scarlet macaws can last as much as 100 years in captivity, so Tiki and Gizmo should have many happy
years of feather preening ahead. Another loving zoo couple are siamangs Pete and Sapphire, who have been together since 1997. Siamangs, endangered arboreal gibbons native to the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, can live around 40 to 50 years in captivity, so you could say Pete, age 40, and his 39-year-

It’s been quite a year for Space Coast United Soccer Club coach Cal Dixon … and it just keeps getting better. After being named the 2017 Florida Youth Soccer Girls Competitive Coach of the Year award in August, Dixon found out last month that he had won the Region III award as well. Motivated Allen leads promising group BY CARL KOTALA
There are two ways to look at this year’s Viera High wrestling team. With six freshmen and several sophomore first-year wrestlers, the Hawks have a chance to be a very dominant team in a couple of years if everyone sticks with the sport. Then there’s senior Gio Allen. Viera’s 285-pounder has been pretty dominant all season long … and he’s got something to prove after what happened to him last year. Poised to qualify for the state tournament, Allen’s trip to the regional tournament took a devastating turn when a car fire on I-95 backed up traffic and he was disqualified when he couldn’t make it to the weigh-ins on time. This year, Allen is off to a 16-0 start — all by first-round pins. “I want to show how good I am,” he said. Now a legitimate 285 pounds (he was 260 last year), Allen is ready to make another run at the state tournament, which takes place March 2 and 3 at the Silver Spurs Arena in

Ryder Cup keeps Viera East Men’s Golf Association busy
Now is a Great time to SELL!
BY DAVID D. HORST
Despite the cold weather, the competition at the Viera East Golf course and the men’s league has been hot. The Viera East Men’s Golf Association is in the middle of its Ryder Cup, which has been one of the members’ favorite tournaments in the past. This year is no exception. The attire for the teams is either a red shirt or blue shirt and there is a lot of camaraderie. Fifty-two players combines to create 26 teams — 13 are red teams and 13 are blue teams — in a Ryder Cup-like format with a scramble format for the first round and a best-ball format for the second round. Points are awarded for each hole, with the front nine and back nine winners also receiving a point for a total of 20 points. If there any ties on a hole, the points are split. After the first day of competition, the two teams were only two points apart with the blue team leading. The next format will be a two-man best ball format, with the total of both days of competition used to determine the winning team and the Ryder Cup award. Lane Burney and Mike Hogan are the team captains. The last tournament of 2017 was a four-man team

format, which counted the two best balls. Gerry Adams, Jack Webb and Mike Pope teamed up to prevail. Jim Smith, Mike Schmitt, Roger Harvie and Roger Way were second, and the team of Bill Scholtens, Tom Walters, Dick May and David Hill finished third. Sam Speziale on No. 4, Marc Brown on No. 7, Wayne Dunham on No. 13 and Jim Donnelly on No. 16 were closest-to-the-pin. The Viera East Men’s Golf Association also is mourning the death of Larry Hutker, who recently passed away. He was one of the most positive, happy and fun-loving members in the league. His last round of golf was Sept. 21, and it also was his best round of the year. Hutker will be missed. VV

With four big events lined up during the next two months, the Duran Golf Club is going to be the place to be for Brevard County golf enthusiasts. It all starts on Feb. 19 and 20, when the inaugural Moon Golf Invitational takes place. The event, hosted by the University of Louisville women’s golf team, will showcase some of the best collegiate golfers in the country. The following weekend (Feb. 24), Duran will host the fifth annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic, an event focused on raising money for several local cancer organizations. History will be made at Duran March 17 and 18 when the club hosts the inaugural Women’s Space Coast Amateur tournament. A week later, it’s the 10th annual Men’s Space Coast Amateur. “We’re really excited about the (women’s amateur event) with the level of high school golfers in the area, and with the collegiate golfers — the Florida Tech team and the Eastern Florida State College team,” Duran Head Golf
Professional Matt Morrison said. “From a younger, competitive player standpoint, we expect a great turnout. But it’s for ladies of all skill levels. We’ll have multiple flights just like we do with the men’s tournament.” Duran has a promotional partnership with Moon Golf for the women’s event. There will even be a pre-event party at the store’s Wickham Road location the night before the tournament begins. McDonalds, owned locally by Ray Rodriguez, is the title sponsor of both events. The Men’s and Women’s Space Coast Amateurs will both follow with a two-day, 36-hole individual stroke play format. The cost is $125 per player and includes the two rounds, practice balls (prior to play) with lunch each day and prizes. There is a maximum of 100 players for each event and Morrison said spots are filling up fast. For information, go to durangolf.com, or call 321504-7776, ext. 1. Those are the same contact points for anyone interested
in playing in the Pink Ribbon Classic. Although it’s a womenfriendly event, men also are welcome. “We are honored to once again partner with the EWGA (Executive Women’s Golf Association of the Space Coast) to offer one of the area’s most popular events,” Morrison said in a press release. “Thanks to our title sponsor, Connors Wealth Management, along with another major sponsor, 321Cabinets. and maybe a little bit of excitement.” He says he is a “big fan of his teachers and staff; being blessed with the teachers and the faculty. They work so hard.” Parker’s enthusiasm bubbles to the surface as he talks about his goals and really moving forward with programs and to increase enrollment and provide opportunities outside the box. “We are forming a performing arts program this year, bringing back music programs, athletic programs
with multiple teams and sports, competing among Catholic schools.” He wants to increase the size of the campus that already has a media center, a full library and full technology laboratory. Enrollment is 160 students, kindergarten through eighth grade. A pre-kindergarten program offers orientation and socialization. “The world needs digital advancements to make progress going forward, but keep traditional learning as well,” Parker said. “We don’t have to teach to a test. The test does not make our decisions.” Parker believes “we have to grow and reinvest in our own system. Children raised here, educated here should be able to find something with these companies (locally) and reinvest and stay here, not leave. I want them to stay here to reinvest here. My hope is to make that happen.” Parker, who moved from New York to Viera with his family in 2007, earned his bachelor’s degree at Long Island University and his master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Central Florida. Nearly 30 students have expressed interest in being part of a new club team being formed at Holy Trinity. A drone racing team. The team will compete March 23 at the Innovation Games as part of the Melbourne Air Show at the Melbourne Airport with at least two additional piloting days scheduled for February and March. Brevard County School Board member Matt Susin (District 4) introduced the idea of the drone racing league and was quite receptive to including private and home-schooled students into what could eventually turn into a state-wide event. Viera High is starting a drone racing team, too. Holy Trinity held an introductory meeting last month that drew a number of students and parents. Aethervision, a local company helping to supply the drones, also was on hand. “There’s two basic types of drones — the ones you buy at the hobby stores with the full-motion cameras that you use to take pictures and do surveys and things like that,” said Holy Trinity Physical Science teacher Matthew Bowden, one of the club’s advisors. “Those move fairly slow and they’re for taking pictures from the air. Racing drones use what’s called a first-person view camera, where you’re seeing what the camera — which points straight

That’s actually the hardest part about learning to fly these things is the visuals of it.” Holy Trinity’s Director of College Counseling, Alison Bell, also is a club advisor and sees it as an opportunity for students to take advantage of an emerging skill market. “Drone piloting is probably high on that list because of all the potential applications,” she said. In addition to practicing at school — in the gym and the Tiger Café — Holy Trinity has additional plans for students with an expressed interest in drones.

Golf carts should undergo an inspection each day BY JULIE STURGEON
VIERA VOICE Cory Davis
Sotera Living of Brevard Real Estate Services held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Jan. 12 at the new office at 3190 Suntree Blvd. Margarita D'Angelo, holding scissors, is the broker and owner and Frank Cicarella, center, is the office manager. The Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce, area businesses and D'Angelo's friends attended the event.
I love this place
Golf carts are a fun, Florida-friendly mode of transportation in Viera. To ensure safety while driving to local destinations, it is important to inspect your golf cart every day. A daily inspection should include both a visual scrutiny and an exam of all functional parts of the golf cart. According to Golf Carts Unlimited, an inspection should include the lights, tires, gears, brakes and windshield. Lights: Check to ensure all lights are working, including the headlights, tail lights, brakes and turn signals. Tires: Inspect tires for punctures, cuts and wear.
Make sure to check the tire pressure using a tire pressure gauge. Leaks: Check the ground for leakage from the golf cart. Check the battery and other fluids for leaks if indicated. Vision: Clean all windshields and mirrors daily. Check the windshield wipers. Operation: Check the gears, steering and brakes for smooth operation. Suntree organization raises $250,000 to save babies BY KATIE PARSONS
Suntree residents Aran and Patrick Hissam want everyone to know that fetal surgeries are an option when parents receive a negative fetal diagnosis. In 2012, the Hissams lost their daughter Brianna Marie just 15 hours after she was born with a condition called fetal hydrops — one that doctors in the field of fetal medicine are researching to correct through surgeries performed while a baby is in the womb. After Brianna’s death, the Hissams knew they wanted to help others — and to look for ways to improve outcomes for other babies with negative fetal diagnoses. To date, the Brianna Marie Foundation has raised $250,000 to further fetal therapies, or surgeries and treatments that can be performed on babies before they are even born. “This is an emerging field of medicine that’s so important
to so many families, but it’s underfunded. We want to change that for babies and their families and give them the best shot at survival,” Aran Hissam said. The money raised so far has had a tremendous impact on the field, directly boosting fetal VIERA VOICE Courtesy of April McCoy therapy research The Hissam family — Braden, Aran, at Harvard/Boston Patrick and Ryan — poses at the fifth Children’s Hospital, Johns annual Brianna Marie Foundation 5K Hopkins University and at Wickham Park. the University College of London Institute for Women’s another parent to feel alone or helpless,” Aran Hissam Health. When temperatures dip, sea turtles face danger “Water temperature fluctuates less than air temperature, but when there is a prolonged cold period, it does affect the water and the animals in it. — Kendra Cope
BY KATIE PARSONS
It’s not just people who must adjust when temperatures dip in Brevard County. Sea turtles and other wildlife, like manatees, must adapt to cooler-than-normal temperatures in the air and in the water not just to stay comfortable — but to survive. Kendra Cope is an environmental specialist and sea turtle expert with Indian River County Public Works. She says that sea turtles face a phenomenon called “cold stun when water temperatures dip below 50 degrees. The National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration defines a cold stun as a hypothermic reaction that can result in decreased heart rate, lethargy, shock, pneumonia and possibly death in sea turtles.
VIERA VOICE Courtesy of Indian River County Public Works
A "cold stun" turtle was rescued during the cold snap in January. The turtle is being rehabilitated at the Brevard Zoo.
“Water temperature fluctuates less than air temperature, but when there is a prolonged cold period, it does affect the water and the animals in it, Cope said. The most recent cold snap in early January saw around 11 cold stun turtles rescued out of the north Indian River Lagoon, near the Banana River and Mosquito Lagoon,

Smith, Ivey hold meeting with Viera, Suntree residents BY JULIE STURGEON
At a meeting on Jan. 18 at Calvary Chapel in Viera, County Commissioner Curt Smith and Sheriff Wayne Ivey addressed a group of Viera and Suntree residents regarding current issues in Brevard County. The key topics for Brevard, according to Smith, are road improvement, cleaning up the Indian River Lagoon, and planning for the growing economy, including an influx of new jobs in the future. Future road projects in Viera include connecting Stadium Parkway to the Pineda Causeway, south of Viera. Several Viera homeowners voiced concern about the timeline, currently three years, for extending Stadium Parkway to Lake Andrews, south of Strom Park. “My desire is to extend Stadium Parkway to Lake
Andrew and Stadium connected to Pineda much sooner rather than later,” Smith told the homeowners. “I’ve made my preference known which I would like to have done first.” Many Viera homeowners hope the timeline will be shortened. A projected 75,000 visitors per year to the United States Specialty Sports Association Complex will bring more traffic to the area, impacting the roundabout, which currently is the main route to and from several Viera neighborhoods south of Wickham. Another project for the entire county is the restoration of the Indian River Lagoon, which encompasses 157,000 acres in Brevard. Brevard residents approved a half cent-tax in 2017, about $34 million a year for a 10year period, for restoration of the lagoon. The sales tax
went into effect January 1, 2018. The Lagoon cleanup will reduce pollution, remove pollution and restore natural filtration systems in the river. “Within 55 yards of watershed (a creek, pond, river), septic tanks will dump about 9 pounds of nitrogen per year and 12 pounds of phosphorus (per year),” Smith said. “We want to keep that stuff out and dredge the muck.” Conversion of septic tanks to sewer for many homeowners will result in less pollutants, with longterm benefits for the Lagoon. Smith also presented an optimistic lens for job growth in Brevard. Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Harris and Embraer continue to tap into Brevard’s highly skilled labor force. Embraer will add 600 new jobs through 2020, while Blue Origin announced its first rocket will be built in Brevard County.

“Florida is booming, Brevard County is booming you can just see it popping,” Smith said. “Lots of new developments are popping up everywhere in Suntree and Viera, and along with growth comes new restaurants, stores and business.” Smith stressed that, with this development, there is a continued importance in providing infrastructure and in Viera and Suntree, expanding the South area wastewater treatment plant. Later in the meeting, Ivey shared reports about safety in Brevard County. Ivey reported that overall, Brevard’s crime rate dropped 5.6 percent in 2017. Additionally, there has been a 20-percent drop in the crime rate since 2013, which as Ivey said, is “almost unheard of.” (Uniform Crime Report) Much of that, he stressed, is due to a campaign of educating residents about
the importance of locking car doors, keeping homes secure and teaching them how to protect themselves from crime. “If you are about to become a victim of crime, I’m probably not going to be standing beside you,” Ivey said. “So you need to know how to protect yourself. Our citizens are stakeholders in the community working with us to prevent crime.” Additionally, Ivey said, school security has been increased. That includes the use of a canine unit whenever necessary, as well as a fulltime investigator. Future plans for the Sheriff’s Office include a new west precinct next to the health department in Viera, as well as a new Emergency operations facility in Rockledge. The new emergency operations facility is essential for the safety of Brevard residents. VV

Spinning tales about animal phobias. Zoophobia is the irrational fear of animals. Approximately 6 percent of Americans are affected with animal phobias. In unanticipated situations, perchance facing a growling bear, genetics (evolutionary forces) might justifiably activate a fight or flight reflex. However, persistent illogical distress more often affects females, mostly originating in childhood. Dr. Sigmund Freud also claimed frequency in children. Causal factors might include an unpleasant incident such as a bee sting or a parental demeanor involving shrieking and trembling when sighting a daunting creature — plausibly a small bug. The following phobias are typical. Arachnophobia is the fear of arachnids, often spiders. Rarely do spiders bite. Indeed, the shy, venomous brown recluse (also named violin spider for the violin marking on the head) is regularly blamed for unrelated bites. Considering that it sometimes finds shelter in a shoe, it might retaliate if encountered. Nevertheless, spiders control insects, and their spun silk is a strong and elastic natural fiber. Chiroptophobia is the fear of bats. Folklore transforms vampires into bats. The three vampire bat species live almost exclusively on animal blood and can be found in Latin America. Supposedly, few bats carry rabies. Spectacular in flight, freetailed bats stun spectators at evening exits in Bracken Cave in Texas where an estimated 20 million migrate. Beneficial, bats ingest mosquitoes and other crop insects, pollinate and spread seeds. Though swooping close at night, they are pursuing insects, not people’s hair. Katsaridaphobia is the fear of cockroaches. They existed before humans and will outlive them, tolerating extremely high radiation levels and withstanding food deprivation. Even our ancestors despised this pest; John Smith of Jamestown abhorred the excrement of the “cacarooch.” Bacteria on cockroach bodies contaminate food and body parts (protein) to induce allergies. In fact, children might develop asthma through exposure. Still, cockroaches diligently recycle by feeding on dead plants, dead animals and waste. Musophobia is the fear of mice. Ridiculed is the stereotyped woman standing on a chair, escaping a mouse. Also comical is the mammoth, agitated elephant recoiling

from the miniature mouse. Realistically, a pachyderm may react to any animal suddenly moving at its feet. Admittedly, these rodents contaminate and bite when cornered. Even so, mice are research models possessing characteristics and symptoms similar to humans. Ophidiophobia is the fear of snakes. Certainly, some bite when provoked. Essentially, they prefer to slither away. In Central Florida, 35 of the state’s 46 native species thrive, including four of the six venomous species: the eastern coral snake, the Florida cottonmouth (water moccasin), dusky pygmy rattlesnake and the eastern diamondback rattlesnake. By eating frogs or mice (prey is swallowed whole), they help balance the ecosystem. Ornithophobia is the fear of birds. Unwarranted is the particular fear of black birds (often ravens), supposedly evil and bringing ill omens. Most species are harmless, but they do defend their young and nests. Spreading anxiety are movies — “The Birds” features these creatures aggressively attacking townspeople. Even so, birds are accommodating. According to the Mormon “miracle of the gulls” in 1848 Utah, seagulls devoured crickets and saved the crops — conceivably allegorical, but birds do eat insects. Veritably, bluebirds were utilized in California vineyards to control bacteria-spreading insects causing grape blight. Moreover, birds are skilled flower pollinators. Spheksophobia is the fear of wasps and apiphobia is the fear of bees. These insects do sting when nests are disturbed or when competing for savory picnic food. Yet, wasps consume voracious caterpillars, and bees are uncontested pollinators. Undeniably, these creatures are indispensable to humans and the planet. And most avoid confrontations. VV

Clapper breaks down problems facing world in King Center speach BY DARRELL WOEHLER
For those lucky enough to be at the King Center on Jan. 17, Gen. James Clapper, who now calls himself “Retired Geezer,” mesmerized the audience with his version of Around the World in 80 Minutes. Six main topics were covered — North Korea, Iran, China, Russia, the environment and disease. Clapper’s visit was sponsored by the Indialantic Rotary Club and Susie DeBusk. It was hosted by Ailish NicPhaidin. The major sponsor was Harris Corporation. Gen. Clapper said North Korea and its nuclear threat

is not going away, and “it’s foolish to think that they will denuclearize.” Diplomacy must rule the day. On Iran, he said that they are in basic compliance with the latest treaty, but the Middle East area could explode at any time. He quoted Tom Friedman of the New York Times that “this area is too expensive to fix and too important to ignore.” China’s business growth of 10 percent a year could make it the top world threat within three years, according to Clapper. Clapper also said that Russia is the No. 1 adversary to the United States with its cyber attacks and fake news planting. But, with its declining population
and corruption, Russia’s internal problems might make it less of a problem in the future. The environment and disease also were covered under Bio-Tech, including gene manipulation, greenhouse gases, air pollution, microbes and drug resistant infections. Africa also was mentioned as a major potential trouble spot. Clapper, a former VIERA VOICE Darrell Woehler intelligence officer, served Ailish NicPhaidin, Gen. Son, father lead way in race to fight hunger BY DARRELL WOEHLER
Logan Chapman edged his father, James Chapman, by 3 seconds at the finish line to win the Health First Fight Child Hunger 5K with a time of 19 minutes, 40 seconds. The Jan. 13 race started and finished at Viera High School. The younger Chapman is 13 years old and his father is 47. They live in Cocoa. Shelby Bennett, 18 and also a resident of Cocoa, won the women’s division with a time of 20:57. Lisa Deaton, 53, finished second in the women’s division with a time of 24:27. She lives in Charleston, S.C. There were 356 runners and walkers, children in strollers, a blind man, lots of dogs and at least one pregnant woman who participated in the fundraising event for the Children’s Hunger Project and the Sharing Center of Central Brevard. The sun crept up over the horizon as the aroma of

Catholic (Nathan Snyder), Rockledge (Sean King; Jose Malave; Troy Patrick; Tyrese Patrick; Ari Singleton; Jessie Traver) and Space Coast (Jakob Anderson, Ryan Hutchison and Matthew Quinlan). Silber, a Viera High freshman, said has really enjoyed being part of the robotics team. “I really like it because it’s fun,” Silber said. “We have a fun time here. Everybody’s very kind. It’s very fun to work on a project for a very long time and go through all the struggles and then complete it at the end, which is the best feeling in the world.” A win at the state tournament would mean a trip to Athens, Ga. next month for the Super South Regional, followed by the World Championships in Houston in April. Of course, beating out 37 other teams at the state tournament won’t be easy. That’s why the team is still working hard to make improvements to Overkill to make sure it’s ready for the upcoming challenge. “I think it’s going to be a fun struggle going to that tournament, but I still believe in our drivers and our robot to be able to pull it off,” Perdomo said. 55+ Military Community Congratulations to Gene Anderson, IRCC’s newly elected 2018 Chairman of the Board. With his impressive military background, IRCC is proud to call Gene our Chairman. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1953 and advanced through grades to Major General in 1981. As the commanding general of the 3rd Armored Division, he was stationed in Germany and has experienced living in many different areas of the United States. But he said that when it came to choosing a place to retire, few places could compete with Brevard. In 1998, on a trip in his boat from Stuart to Jekyll Island, Gene made a stop in Brevard and decided to take a look at IRCC. This was the place he and his lovely wife, Gloria decided they wanted to be. IRCC is a wonderful community, unmatched by any for its unique take on being a very laid back, friendly and cohesive military community. Gene is looking forward to another great year at IRCC – the best place to live in Brevard County! Gene Anderson IRCC Chairman of the Board

the forests of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, can live around 40 to 50 years in captivity, so you could say Pete, age 40, and his 39-year-old Sapphire are enjoying their golden years making beautiful music. “Siamangs are known for their “singing” abilities,” Zirulnik said. “Pete and Sapphire make loud calls together every day.” At the other end of the age spectrum are babirusas Meru and Piggy, together since last year. Handsome Meru, with his truly awesome upper canines, is just 2 years old and his pretty teen queen Piggy has been on the planet for only a year. Like most teenagers in love, they just can’t keep their hands, or, in Meru’s and Piggy’s case, cloven hooves off each other. “They are often seen “cuddling” in their exhibit,” Zirulnik said. In the swamps of the Indonesian Islands that are the native habitat for the species, Meru would probably strike out on his own, while Piggy would hang out with girl groups, but at the zoo they have become a bonded pair. Folks in Indonesia call them deerpigs because of their slender legs. If they could talk, Meru and Piggy call each other “dear” pig. Babies often follow love, but not for these three zoo couples. Pete and Sapphire are past the nesting age, and Tiki and Gizmo seem to prefer the childless life. Meru and Piggy are another story. “They’re not fully mature yet, so we’ll see what the future holds for them,” Zirulnik said. VV

Bald eagles make themselves at home in Viera BY JULIE STURGEON
A massive bald eagle’s nest in an old pine tree is a familiar site to many Viera residents who walk or cycle across the Viera Boulevard overpass. The nest, situated in a large pine tree to the northeast of Viera Boulevard and I-95, has been an important consideration in the planning of the new diverging diamond interchange (DDI). Per U.S. Fish and Wildlife regulations, a consultant is monitoring the site to ensure the nest and its inhabitants, a pair of bald eagles, are protected during construction of the DDI. “Eagles will return to their nests year after

buffer must be maintained between the bald eagle’s nest and construction. Additionally, construction

activity closer than 660 feet to the nest is limited to outside the nesting season. "Bald eagle nesting season is from Oct. 1 through May 15, Eager said. “I would guess within a couple of weeks they (the adult eagles) will be getting ready to lay eggs," Eager said. Bald eagles mate for life and can live 20 to 30 years. The much-loved birds are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act (Eagle Act). The Eagle Act prohibits anyone from taking or disturbing bald eagles and their nests.

The school plans to hold a short course, called a microterm, once this year and possibly three times next year depending on student interest and teacher availability. “While it will be titled a drone course, we can infuse so many disciplines in there with math and engineering and science and even technical writing,” Holy Trinity president Katherine Cobb said. “Students will come for a micro-term, so it will be one week, six hours a day, and they will be immersed in this specific subject. Our goal is they won’t even know they’re learning that. They’re just having fun.” VV
