The Avenue Viera is overrun with hiders and seekers. Laleh Castano says her favorite part of the family activity that has become a grassroots craze is knowing she will put a smile on the finder's face. How did this fun, free outdoor pastime of painting and hiding colorful rocks come to be? Well, when the electricity goes off during a hurricane, there’s not a lot to do.
“Hurricane Matthew was coming this way and I was stressed out, trying to find a way to keep calm,” said Jen Justiniano, founder of Brevard Rocks. “I sat down and painted some small rocks for a few hours and it helped take my mind off the storm.” Justiniano, who has two children, found that rock painting was more than a way to soothe her nerves during last October’s hurricane. When the storm passed, she continued painting rocks because it made her feel peaceful and happy. She did some research

and found that there are online rock painting groups throughout Canada, with accompanying Facebook sites. Since Brevard County did not have a group, Justiniano started a local movement in November 2016. So just how does this rock movement here in Brevard work? Rocks are placed throughout the county in public venues, including parks, shopping areas such as The Avenue Viera and libraries. If you find a rock, you can

An American flag was held aloft by two Melbourne Fire Department trucks as the steel beam entered The Avenue Viera. BY DARRELL WOEHLER
A steel I-beam from the wreckage of the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center Twin Towers of New York City now is permanently on display for the public at The Avenue Viera. The most recent journey for this 8-foot long, 2,200-pound chunk of steel was on May 27, 2017, when it was moved from its temporary location at the Kennedy Space Center Fire Department to The Avenue Viera in a special caravan on the back of a tractor-trailer rig, draped in the American flag and escorted by several hundred motorcycle riders. The caravan entered off Stadium Drive and proceeded under a giant American flag, held aloft from two Melbourne Fire
Department ladder trucks. A huge crowd gathered at the newly constructed park in front of the fountain near the AMC movie theater. Two miniature towers representing the Twin Towers were constructed and now are holding the steel-beam artifact. The beam was unloaded with full honors by the Melbourne Fire Department Honor Guard, and then moved by a tractor to its final resting spot in the park. Also on hand were representatives from Fire Department #1 at Kennedy Space Center, including Tom Van Horn, a 43-year veteran firefighter with 36 years at Kennedy Space Center. Van Horn was instrumental in getting the beam to the space center. There also were numerous retired members of the New York City Police Department
and Fire Department in attendance. Ceremonial music was provided by the Brevard Police & Fire Pipes and Drums Corps for this event,

BEAM continued from page 2 York are planned for the future. The original journey for this now-rusting artifact from that terrible day appears to have begun in Coatesville, Penn., where it was forged into a steel beam by Lukens Iron Works in the late 1960s. From there, it made its way to a notable spot in one of the gleaming towers of the World Trade Center on the New York City skyline. After the attack, most of the buildings’ remains were stored in Hangar 17 at JFK Airport in New York. From there, pieces have been sent to all 50 states and various locations on four continents. The number for this particular piece is Artifact G-0063. Van Horn and Kevin Smith, president of Transport Workers Union 525, were key figures in bringing the artifact to the area. From Hangar 17 at JFK Airport, the beam’s journey continued to Philadelphia by truck and then by air to Miami. It was then transported by truck with honor escorts to the Kennedy Space Center Fire Department and finally to the Avenue Viera and its final resting place. Scott McCarthy, general manager of the Avenue Viera, encouraged everyone to visit Memorial Beam Park at any time. At night, special lighting has been installed. Van Horn said the public now has the opportunity to reflect on, view and touch this spiritual piece of American history to honor that day and the nearly 3,000 lost lives. The memorial also honors the new Freedom Tower that

Three Space Coast United teams win Florida Cup, advance to nationals BY CARL KOTALA
The Space Coast United Soccer Club has once again proved it’s one of the top programs in the state. Now it’s time to remind the country just how good it is. When the National Cup XVI Finals take place at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. this month, SCU will have three teams playing for the championship in their respective age groups. The boys U13 team along with the girls U14 and U18 teams all advanced to the national tournament by

Christian Guirgis scored both goals to lead the SCU boys U13 team to a 2-1 victory against Tampa Bay United and a spot in the National Cup XVI finals, which are set for July 21 to 24. Other members of coach Dean Flexton’s U13 boys team include: Alexander Bennett; Lucas Bennett; Nathaniel Chapman; Logan Collins; Matteo Dal Vecchio; Conner Floyd; Nathan Goyer; Chase Jansen; Daniel Mata;

In the U14 girls game, the team had to play without goalkeeper Emma Pruett, who was injured in the semifinals. Savannah Oxley, a field player who has some experience in goal, stepped up for Space Coast United and recorded the shutout. Piper McHenry figured prominently in the first two goals for SCU. Her direct pressure led to an own goal to put the U14 team up 1-0, then Mai Jensen found the back of the net from 25 yards out to make it 2-0 after a great layoff from McHenry. Brevard Rockets B Team wins playoff title in dramatic fashion BY CARL KOTALA
Things are looking up in more ways than one for the Brevard County Rockets. Not only are more kids coming out to play high school hockey, but the Rockets’ B Team rallied from deficits of 4-0 and 5-1 to defeat the Volusia Stingrays 7-6 in a shootout that went eight players deep to win the playoff championship of the Central Florida High School Hockey League (CFHSHL). Merritt Island’s Thomas Batchelor scored the gamewinning goal and Viera goalie Dan Thew came up big in the net in what Rockets coach Randy Just would call, “One of the most thrilling hockey games I’ve ever been associated with.” Based out of the Space Coast Iceplex in Rockledge, the Rockets are made up of high school players from throughout Brevard County along with some players from surrounding counties where hockey is not offered. Just said when he first got involved with the team four years ago, they struggled to put together a roster of more than 15 players to form an A
Team and a B Team. This season, the Rockets had 36 players. “The numbers have increased. The talent has increased,” Just said. “The commitment from the kids to play, play as a group and play together (has gotten better). “We have a really good group of kids that are staying together this winter. We’ll start back up in late August, early September and they’re going to play together, which will be really helpful. Generally, when the winter months come, everybody scatters to play elsewhere.” The A Team, which made last year’s CFHSHL finals, reached the semifinals this year before losing 5-3 to Jacksonville. The B Team, meanwhile, was down four goals in its championship game before making its comeback. Steven Rossi had two goals and three assists, Zach Scorer had a goal and two assists, Cody McCauley added a goal and an assist and Donovan Dininny had an assist. Alex Snyder also had an assist and a goal as the Rockets rallied for a 6-5 lead. Volusia tied the score

Viera High earns Rozelle Sportsmanship Award BY CARL KOTALA
Now here is an award to be proud of. Viera High was one of 10 schools throughout the state to receive the Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Award for the 2016-17 school year, which recently was announced by the FHSAA. The Hawks were the only Brevard County team on this year’s list. According to the FHSAA website, “the award is given to schools whose athletic teams demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship during the 2016-2017 regular season as well as FHSAA State Series competition.” Previous winners include Merritt Island Christian in 2013-14 and Cocoa in 2012-13. Viera won a sectional award in 2012-13, but this is the first time the Hawks have won the overall classification award. There were 20 awards given out overall to a first-place team and a runner-up in Classes 1A to 9A, as well as the middle school level. Viera won for Class 8A, with Gulf Coast (Naples) taking the

A year ago, Tim DeMorat was just trying to learn the Viera High offense. Now, the Hawks quarterback is working on becoming a better leader. “Being a vocal leader is the main focus for me right now to try to improve on,” the rising senior said during the team’s spring football practice. DeMorat, who transferred to Viera from Merritt Island last summer, is coming off a season in which he threw for just under 2,500 yards with 23 touchdown passes and eight interceptions as the Hawks reached the Class 7A regional finals. While it was a good season for the Hawks quarterback, much more is going to be expected of him in 2017. “Tim just needs to concentrate and let the
jamboree performance against Oak Ridge Community and Heritage was any indication, DeMorat is owning it all right. The Viera quarterback threw for three touchdowns on the night as Viera defeated Oak Ridge 14-0 in two quarters of football and then topped Heritage 28-0. He also did a good job of spreading the ball around, hitting Sean Atkins for a 19yard touchdown pass, then VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala hitting Quinton Richard for Viera High quarterback Tim an 11-yard score before DeMorat is looking to take on more of a leadership role with the going deep to Travis Jones Hawks this season. for a 60-yard scoring pass. His comfort level in game come to him,” Viera Viera’s offense is clearly High coach Kevin Mays said much better than last at the beginning of spring season, when he was still practice. “I think he’s kind trying to learn the system of forcing it right now. He while taking over as the needs to step up and just Hawks’ starter. take control of the offense. “I feel really comfortable “He knows it now. year to lead the team and get us to states.” Having a much deeper knowledge of the offense has not only made DeMorat a more confident player, but that confidence is helping him turn into more of a team leader. That should pay off throughout the offseason
and all the way to July 31, when the Hawks report for the first day of fall practice. DeMorat believes Viera’s offense should be able to put plenty of points on the scoreboard. “We should be one of the top offenses in the county,” he said. “I’m excited for this offense.” VV

Years of hard work and dedication have paid off in a big way for four members of the Space Coast Crew. The Men’s Youth Quad (sculling) team of Nick Baney, Weston Hall, Jason Bersani and Jack Baney not only became the first boat to reach the grand finals at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships. They won the bronze medal. “It’s by far the most successful boat we’ve ever had on our team and this is our 21st year as a club,” SCC coach Ethan Shoemaker said. Put together at the beginning of the season more as a reward for hard work than for nationals potential, the four rowers just kept getting better and better as the season went on. “They just continually got faster,” Shoemaker said. “It seemed like a boat that didn’t really have a top-end speed. Every time we’d go out to race, they’d go a little bit faster than the race before. “They always came off the water after every race with something they didn’t like, something that didn’t go right. They never came off the water with this, ‘That was the fastest we’re going to go’ mentality. They always thought they could do better … until the final at youth nationals.” After taking part in a time trial on the first day of the

three-day event in Sarasota, the quad finished second in its semifinal heat before covering the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 19 seconds on the final day to earn the bronze medal. It was the kind of performance that could have long-term ramifications for the SCC inside and outside of its boathouse. And that’s a good thing. “Internally, I think it really set a new standard for everybody on the team,” Shoemaker said. “Going back to the boathouse after that weekend, a lot of the younger guys on the team were thinking, ‘We can do that, too.’ “A couple of guys in that (bronze medal) boat started off on the lowest tier when they joined. They were not
great athletes. They were really out of shape. They worked for a couple of years and that was their final result — to medal at the youth national championship. “… I think nationally, it put us on the map as a crew not to be messed with, which fits well with our vision to become one of the most prestigious clubs in the southeast region.” It was the final SCC race for seniors Jack Baney (Hobart College) and Nick Baney (Florida Tech) as the two cousins will move on to row in college. Hall and Bersani, meanwhile, will row as a double in the U.S. Rowing U19 World Junior Championship Trials in New Jersey later this month. VV

Marilyn Arbuckle displays the June 1997 inaugural cover of Senior Life, featuring her late husband Andy Arbuckle. BY LINDA WIGGINS It is entirely appropriate that the 20th anniversary issue of Senior Life newspaper showcases the importance of volunteerism. The Viera/Suntree-based publication targets boomers, seniors and their families across Brevard and is a sister paper to the Viera Voice.
The inaugural June 1997 issue featured Brevard Zoo docent Andy Arbuckle on the cover taking questions from preschoolers exploring the Petting Zoo area of the top attraction. The accompanying front-page story outlined the many reasons to volunteer in terms of health of community and individual, and the
inside pages showcased the zoo docent program in detail. “Andy was very active in retirement. He left nothing undone that he wanted to do,” said Marilyn Arbuckle, his wife of 66 years until his passing in 2015. “He never cared

Viera High’s Gabrielski celebrated graduation in a different way BY CARL KOTALA
On the day when her Viera High classmates were walking across the stage at Hawk Stadium as part of their graduation ceremony, Alex Gabrielski was more than 2,500 miles away, walking across a different kind of stage. Wearing her Viera High graduation cap for the whole world to see. Gabrielski was in Los Angeles for the 2017 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), an event that attracted 1,778 students from more than 70 countries. While her friends were texting her about what was going on at the Viera High graduation, Gabrielski was accepting her thirdplace prize in the Earth and Environmental Sciences category for a project she has been working on for the past six years. “The awards ceremony was the same day as my graduation ceremony, so I had to choose — should I fly back early? Or should I stay there?” Gabrielski said. “I decided to stay there because you only get to experience something
like that once.” Gabrielski’s project, titled “Increasing the Sustainability of a Heterotrophic Algae Biomass Production System” has been something she has been working on since seventh grade.
“I grew algae that purified waste water and then also could be used for bio fuel.” — Alex Gabrielski
“I worked with algae and trying to improve algae growth so it can then be used as bio-fuel,” she said. “And this year, I grew algae that purified waste water and then also could be used for bio fuel.” While creating algae biofuel has been a long-term project for Gabrielski, it’s hardly the only one she has ever worked on. In fact, this year’s ISEF event was the seventh international science competition she has been to and the 36th science

fair she has attended at various levels. She’s been interested in science and environmentally conscious most of her life. “I think in kindergarten, I actually did a project on slime and how bouncy and stretchy different types of slime are,” Gabrielski laughed. As much fun as she has had doing science fair competitions throughout her life, those days have now ended. “This is my first summer where I’m not trying to rush and get my project together

for next year, but it’s kind of sad that I don’t get to do that again,” she said. “I’m going to miss those people and seeing them … I’ve made friends from all over (the world).” She will be attending Stetson University in the fall. “Right now, I’m going into health sciences and I want to eventually go to med school and kind of see what I want to do from there after that,” she said. Meanwhile, Gabrielski has a high school graduation story
nobody else in her class got to experience. After all, who can say they walked across the stage in front of people from more than 70 countries? “I felt like it was worth it. I got third place,” Gabrielski said. “Walking on stage in front of all of those kids … it was fun because I wore my graduation cap. The world congratulated me on graduating. That was a really cool thing.” VV

Soap Box Derby racing a real Webb family tradition BY CARL KOTALA
Ask 9-year-old Logan Webb what he likes about racing in the Soap Box Derby and he’ll smile before giving a simple response: “Getting on the podium.” Well, the kid from Viera did just that at the Central Florida Soap Box Derby in Sanford this past May, and now he’s on his way to compete at the 80th FirstEnergy AllAmerican Soap Box Derby on July 22 in Akron, Ohio. By getting to the national championship, Webb is upholding a family tradition. His grandfather made the nationals in 1965, racing out of Arkansas. His father, Brandon, made it out of the St. Louis region in 1986. Now it’s Logan’s turn. And who did he beat to get to Akron? His twin brother,
“They race their best against each other” — Stephanie Mason
Mason, of course. After competing all season in Sanford to earn points in the Rally Race Program where the top seven places qualify for the nationals, the boys took part in their local championship stock race, which also serves as an automatic qualifier for the winner. In the double-elimination event, Logan went unbeaten through the winners bracket, while Mason had to race his way through the losers bracket after being defeated early on. The brothers squared off

in the finals, with Mason winning the first race to set up the all-important “if necessary” race that must have brought back bad
memories for Logan. A year ago, he went through the winners bracket only to lose twice in the finals. And here he was again … only this time, against his brother. “After Mason beat him the first time, he got really focused, I would say,” Brandon Webb said. But this time, it would be Logan who would come out on top to earn the spot in the nationals. Mason, unfortunately, finished in a four-way tie for fifth place in rally points and lost out in a tiebreaker. Still, taking part in the Soap Box Derby has turned into quite a family bonding experience for the Webb family. Not only does Stephanie Webb get to cheer her boys on, she’s also
become the pit crew at the bottom of the course. With a number of other Brevard families taking part in soap box racing in Sanford, the Webbs have made plenty of new friends. In fact, if anyone is interested in learning more about the racing in Sanford, Brandon Webb encourages you to contact Eric Griffin at 407353-6228 or at eric.griffin@ sanfordfl.gov Racing against each other has certainly been fun for Logan and Mason and no matter what happens in Akron this month, they’ll be at it again in Sanford in the fall. “They race their best against each other,” Stephanie Mason said A smiling Brandon Webb added: “They always have.” VV

Healing Strong offers alternative way to fight cancer
BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER
Anyone diagnosed with cancer can heal himself through nutrition, exercise and alternative practices, says one cancer survivor who offers a nonprofit organization, Healing Strong, so others also can benefit from evidence-based nontoxic therapies. A six-year cancer survivor, Kristen Barry, has started a chapter of Healing Strong in the Melbourne/Suntree area. “I have spent years healing myself and helping others heal from disease and/ or the effects of cancer treatments,” Barry said. “I had moved from upstate New York to Florida in June 2010
and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. I was rushed through traditional treatment. I discovered the Young Survival Coalition and attended conferences around the country and then started to do a lot of research.” As Barry continued her research and searched for a possible cancer survivors group that gave healing help, she became committed to using nontoxic, natural, holistic methods for treatment. “I was a survivor from regular treatment that had a lot of horrible things happening with side effects,” Barry said. “I did more research on the Healing Strong organization and
decided that is the group that needed to be in this area. People seem to be rushed into traditional medical treatments doing more harm than good. I contacted another woman who was also doing traditional treatments and was doing research and changing over to the holistic side of things because of the side effects she was having.” Barry has reversed a lot of her issues. One was a sudden hearing loss on her one side after having platinumbased chemo therapy. Space Coast Association of Realtors' new HQ may open in October BY MIKE GAFFEY

The new headquarters of the Space Coast Association of Realtors is under construction at Wickham Road and Pineda Plaza Way.
Selig, CEO of the association, which serves more than 4,000 Realtors and business partners. “We’re excited.” The association’s 8,000-square-foot Merritt Island office at 105 McLeod St. closed June 22, Selig said. Staff will work out of the 13,000-square-foot Melbourne office at 1450 Sarno Road until the new headquarters is ready. The organization arose from the 2014 merger of the Melbourne Area Association of Realtors and Space Coast Realtors. Member Realtors voted in October 2016 to sell the association’s two offices and purchase property for a new facility in Palm Shores, heeding a recommendation from the association’s Future Facility Task Force.

Groundbreaking took place at the 3-acre site on April 18. Consolidating the two offices under one roof is the right move financially, Selig said. “When we merged, it just didn’t make sense to keep those two big buildings like that,” she said. The Palm Shores site provides a centralized location close to Interstate 95 and U.S. 1, and should reduce commutes for some members and staff, Selig said. “Most of our members are centrally located in that area, so it just made sense,” she said. “It’s the perfect location for us.” Designed by Melbourne architectural firm Holeman Group, Inc., the association’s new home will have office and meeting space, as well
as 8,820 square feet of event space with a catering kitchen and reception area for town halls, training and other events such as wedding receptions, with room for up to 471 people, Selig said. General contractor M.E. Construction, Inc. of West Melbourne is the builder and C & H Merrill, Inc. of Palm Bay did engineering and design work. “Our new building will allow us to reduce costs and streamline our services, thus enhancing our ability to serve our community and our Realtors,” Association President Lynn Jones said at the groundbreaking ceremony. Charlotte Newman, who was born in 1913, was happy to meet her great-great-grandson. BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER
Joy encircles a family, but it is even more joyous when that unit includes five generations. Charlotte Newman, 103, of Melbourne joined her family in celebrating the birth of David Oliver Flook on May 18, completing the family's fifth generation circle. Charlotte Newman, arriving in Melbourne 53 years ago to retire, remains active in her own home she shares with her son. She loves her game shows like “Family Feud” with
“Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune” not to be missed each evening. Knitting keeps her busy, but it is the puzzles of any size, shape or kind that keep her reading and going strong selecting word puzzles, cryptograms and scrambles, “she does them all, and jigsaw puzzles,” said Hilda Petruncola, Newman’s daughter. “We go to out to dinner every night,” Petruncola said. “UNO’s on Wickham is her favorite restaurant, but we go to many other places.” The new addition

The little fellow received his wings for taking his first flight, awarded to him by the pilot upon his plane landing in Orlando when recently coming to visit the family. Little David Flook will continue his flying by traveling with his parents to England for a wedding, said Petruncola. And great-greatgrandmother Newman looks forward to her next birthday on Nov. 22.
