The Viera High School Class of 2017 celebrates at the close of its graduation ceremony on May 19. More photos on page 30 and VieraVoice.com. BY DARRELL WOEHLER

On a warm and very windy night on Friday, May 19 in front of a standingroom-only crowd at Viera High School’s football stadium, there was all the usual pomp and circumstance you would expect. The presentation of colors was performed by by VHS JROTC Color Guard Unit and the National Anthem was sung by the VHS Chorus members of the Class of 2017. Then, it was time for the two Principal’s Scholars as class speakers, Valeria Villanueva and Jacqueline Lamb. Villanueva spoke about the compassion exhibited by fellow students during the past four years and the hope for this to continue into the future. Lamb presented a partial timeline in how she had been told that her senior year in high school would go by in a blink. And, that she was standing before the 521 other graduates to inform them that it did. It’s likely that this also will happen in most of their future endeavors as well. Contemplating these words, along with their other classmates, were

Later came the mad rush of family and friends onto the field for congratulations, flowers and tears. This went on well into the night, until it was time to turn out the lights both on the field and on these senior students’ time in high school. VV

p u p SPORTSWra Holy Trinity faces daunting quest with rugged 2017 football schedule BY CARL KOTALA

Holy Trinity football coach Nate Hooks Jr. believes his team will be loaded next season. The Tigers’ schedule will be loaded, too. Under the new playoff system adopted by the Florida High School Athletic Association for the 2017 season, the Tigers’ chances of making the playoffs will no longer be decided by how well they do in their district. In fact, district play was eliminated for Classes 4A and lower and a point system will be used instead, rewarding teams for playing

schedule, he added two outof-state trips against bigtime programs. “(Under) this point system, strength of schedule is extremely important,” Hooks said. “This will be the best team we’ve had since I’ve been here and (we’re playing) by far, the toughest schedule.” After opening at home against Cocoa Beach on Sept. 18 and Trinity Prep on Sept. 25, Holy Trinity will begin a daunting stretch. It starts Sept. 1 when the Tigers will travel to Trussville, Ala. to face Hewitt-Trussville, which went 11-1 last season. That will be followed by a home game against Tallahassee Maclay and a home game against American Heritage Delray. That will be followed by a road trip to Jacksonville Bolles, coming off a 12-1 season, and a trip to Moultrie, Ga. to play national power Colquitt County on Sept. 29. The rest of the Tigers’ schedule features a road game at Indian Rocks and home games against Orlando

Hawks add Osceola, Heritage to already tough schedule BY CARL KOTALA

The Viera High football team’s 2017 schedule will feature a number of familiar names … and a few new ones … which should make for another challenging season. After going on the road to face a Vero Beach team that went 11-1 last season in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 18, the Hawks will open the regular season at home against a Rockledge team that is expected to be much improved in 2017. One of the highlights of the season will come in Week 2 when Viera travels to Washington D.C. to play Gonzaga as part of a homeand-home series the two schools began last season. While the trip should be an incredible experience for the Hawks, they’ll have another tough game waiting for them when they come home. Osceola, which went 10-1 last season, will come to Viera on Sept. 8. Viera will be home again the following week against Merritt Island, before embarking on a string of four consecutive road games — at Cocoa, at Melbourne, at Palm Bay and at Martin County in what figures to be

a game that will once again decide the Class 7A, District 6 champion. Viera will get a week off following the Martin County contest before hosting South Fork and then Heritage on Nov. 3 to close out the regular season. “That schedule, if we get through it healthy, that schedule will have us prepared for the playoffs,” Hawks coach Kevin Mays said. While Viera has never been afraid to schedule tough teams, the additions of Osceola and Heritage to an already challenging list of opponents will definitely take the Hawks’ degree of difficulty up a few notches next season. “One, you want to test yourself,” Mays said. “Plus, we have found out the better you get, the harder it is to make a schedule. Osceola called. They’re a good program. We wanted to test ourselves with that. And then we haven’t played Heritage in a long time. Me and Coach (Mark) Ainsley and (Viera defensive coordinator Derek) Smith went to college together. We figured, let’s play and have a good incounty game.” VV

Christian Prep, Seven Rivers and John Carroll. As tough as the schedule will be for the Tigers, there are two potential payoffs. Not only could it help Holy Trinity get into the postseason, it could also help boost some Tigers in the eyes of college

recruiters. “Nothing but positives can come from this schedule,” he said. “ESPN has already contacted me about televising two of the games (against Hewitt-Trussville and Colquitt County). “This is exposure for the players. Every coach wants to win games, but ultimately, my focus is giving the kids a chance to go to college. This schedule does that.” VV

Viera’s Belaya, Diaz repeat as state doubles champions BY CARL KOTALA

For the second straight year, Viera High’s Sasha Belaya and Izzie Diaz proved to be an unbeatable pair at the Class 3A state tennis tournament. Despite being the defending champions, the duo was seeded second at this year’s state doubles tournament, but ended up beating top seeds April Sanchez and Kendall Nash of Atlantic Coast 7-5, 6-1 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs. “We worked together and played really well as a team,” Belaya said. “Izzie’s very solid at the net. When she volleys, she puts it away. With me being stronger on the baseline, in general, I set her up and she’s able to put it away pretty quickly. That makes us difficult to beat. And we’re really close

friends. That connection helps, too.” Belaya and Diaz are the only Viera tennis players to win a state title. They were nearly joined this year by the boys doubles team of senior Nico Fuchs and junior Gabe Diaz. They upset the No. 1 seeds along the way to the title match, before falling in straight sets. “It was definitely a lot better to make it all the way through (to the finals),” Fuchs said. “It was a tough final. We played well, but they just won a couple more games. Overall, it was a fun time.” Although Belaya, unfortunately, was not able to defend her singles title — she lost in the semifinals — she was happy to come away with another state championship. The five-star recruit, recently named an All-

American for the second year in a row, is headed to the University of Illinois next year. As for her time at Viera, Belaya said she thoroughly enjoyed her two years of playing with the Hawks. “I was really hesitant to play high school tennis last year,” Belaya said. “I actually wasn’t going to play and I decided last minute. This year, I didn’t even hesitate to play because I had a really good time last year. “This year, it was just overall a really good experience. Everyone is extremely supportive here. They make it feel really special, so that’s always nice. VV

The season is coming to an end for the Viera East Men’s Golf Association’s Fall/ Spring Tournaments. The grand finale Viera East Men’s Club Championship was held in late April. The Club Championship also is combined with the VEMA Masters Tournament in which both events are played over two different days. The Masters is a handicapped scoring event, and the Club Championship is based upon gross score during the same two days. In the Masters Championship, Tim Brown won the first flight. Guy Sullivan finished second and Tom Welters placed third. In the second flight, Ted Edlow prevailed and Sam Speziale was second. Warren Powell

finished third. Dick May won the third flight and John Gulla placed second. Fred Baltazar was third. Steve Vasilevich won the fourth flight, Michael Reinhard was second and Richard Blakney finished in third place. Sullivan posted rounds of 75 and 77 to win the VEMA Club Championship. The team of Dennis Lamb, Ben Herrman, Ken Tucker and Martin Gillette won the latest VEMA friendly competition, which was scored as a four-team handicap. It used either the first, second or third best balls on each hole. The team of Welters, John Perino, Jim Donnelly and May placed second. The VEMA league is open to all men 21 and older. For information, contact Viera East Golf Course. The league plays at 8 a.m. each Thursday. VV

SCHOOL

Houser receives educator grant and Teacher of the Year award BY CARL KOTALA

Holy Trinity Lower School students aren’t the only ones who think their librarian, Judy Houser, is pretty special. Earlier this year, the national Air Force Association (AFA) not only gave Houser a $250 Educator Grant, but the AFA Cape Canaveral Chapter named her Teacher of the Year for the third time. Because it was Houser’s third win, the chapter added an additional $500 to her award. “Mrs. Houser is a master teacher and she definitely has a vision for the future,” said Catherine Koos, head of Holy Trinity’s Lower School. “I love how she is always willing to reinvent herself as a teacher to stay up-to-date on education.” The latest AFA grant is the fifth Houser has received since 2011 and the seventh the Lower School has received overall, more than any other school in Brevard County. Educator grants are awarded to teachers for use in projects promoting STEM

learning. Houser, who also serves as director of enrichment and teaches TEAM 5 and 6 classes submitted her grant to purchase three littleBits “Rule Your Room” kits for students to invent electronics projects. One student designed his own littleBits-powered fan.

Another made a “Defend Your Domain” room alarm. “I had a student who was using the littleBits and the Makey Makey to make a buzzer sound,” Houser said. “When he would touch both ends of the alligator clip, it would sound. “Well, he laid one clip down and I picked it up and I

touched him on the arm. He saw it buzz, and he looked, and I let go. Then, I touched him again and he realized current, the electronic circuit, was going through both of us and it was only when we connected that the circuit closed and the buzzer would go off. “It was really exciting. Not

only did I see the buzzer go off, but I felt like I saw the light bulb go off above his head.” In addition to the littleBits equipment, the Lower School library is also equipped with a Makerspace area thanks to a $10,000 donation by the Harris Corporation. It features a 3D printer and, thanks to another donation by the parents association, a laser cutter. Now, the library has become a popular destination. “I thought my circulation might drop,” Houser said. “My circulation has increased because kids love to be in here.” Koos said she has also observed a high level of engagement from the students, including children who go to the library for recess to work on projects. “I think the biggest thing with Judy is she wants the library to be a real hub for the children, so everybody wants to be there, wants to be learning,” Koos said. Viera High's Ocean Bowl team places ninth at nationals BY CARL KOTALA

Getting a chance to compete in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl finals proved to be both educational and eye-opening for a group of Viera High students. Not only did Viera’s Ocean Bowl team finish ninth in the country out of a pool of 25 teams, but the students who made the trip to Oregon State’s campus also got a

chance to see what life is like on the other side of the United States. “It was cool because I’ve never been to the West Coast,” Viera senior Alex Krestan said. “It was a new experience, eye-opening to a different way to live there … how the houses are different; the infrastructure. “They have trees there. Like, actual trees, not the little shrubby trees we have here.”

Private Lessons • Piano • Voice • Violin • Harp • Acoustic & Electric Guitar

Krestan, team captain Griffin Pharmer, Eric Beck, Hannah Howe and Mitchell Necessary qualified for the trip by winning the Manatee Bowl, which was held at Florida Atlantic in February. In addition to the game show-style competition, where contestants hit buzzers to answer questions, the group got to see the Pacific Ocean and learn about the different organisms that live there. They also visited tide pools and attended a career fair. Morgan Woodard, who teaches marine sciences at Viera and served as the team’s coach along with her mother, Debbie Tweedie, and Viera High alumus Oscar Sang, said each student had to represent a stakeholder as part of the brief. For example, one student took the role of a stakeholder for the Coast Guard and offered recommendations regarding the safety of boaters around a site where wave energy is

being harnessed. “You had to be a lot faster in nationals than you had to be in regionals,” Pharmer said. “In regionals, if you didn’t know the question, you could kind of wait for the other to get an answer and you’d have better chances of getting the right answer. “But in this one, you had to get in first.”

Viera won eight games to reach the semifinals, and its ninth-place finish was the best by a team from their region in 10 years. Next year’s national competition will be in Boulder, Colo. and with three juniors (Howe, Necessary and Alyssa Hofmann) and two sophomores (Danie Dowgiallo and Mason Watts). VV

Viera High students praise prestigious AP Capstone program BY CARL KOTALA

A group of Viera High students are about to become the first from the school to receive an AP Capstone diploma. How many won’t be known until the AP scores are revealed in July, but 45 Viera students took part in the twoyear program that required them to take two specific advanced placement classes along with four other AP courses of their choosing. “This program is multicurricular,” said Kate Howick, who teaches AP Capstone at Viera along with Gary Draves.

Members of Viera High's AP Capstone program will find out in July if they will receive an AP Capstone Diploma.

problem solve with each other. It teaches them valuable skills that they’re going to need in their undergraduate studies and, eventually, their graduate studies.” The first phase of the program, taken in a student’s junior year, is called AP Seminar, which senior Parth Turakhia described as, “you have individual presentations and you have an AP test where you’re analyzing documents and reviewing them for credibility and things like that.” From there, it’s on to AP seminar, which Viera senior Leshea Reddick explained is basically taking things to another level. “In AP Research, based off the skills we learned in Seminar, we find a topic that interests us and create a question within that topic to add to the body and knowledge (of the subject),” Reddick said.

“We learn other research skills, different ways of citing resources, and getting deeper into looking into different data bases and actually talking to experts in our fields.” Instead of a final exam, the students must give a 15- to 20-minute speech to a college board about their project. Howick noted that by the end of the year, the students had such a depth of knowledge about their subject, a 15-minute speech didn’t seem daunting. It seemed like a short amount of time. Still, knowing your presentation will decide whether you will get your AP Capstone diploma can create nervousness. “You’re technically presenting to college boards, to professionals, and you get asked questions about your topic,” said Turakhia, whose topic was on the

viability and feasibility of bioprinted organs in lieu of using transplanted organs for surgery since there’s an organ shortage. “It’s nerve-racking at the beginning, but AP Capstone teaches you how to deal with that, how to be professional about it. It’s a good skill to have.” Turakhia and Reddick both lauded the benefits of the AP Capstone program, which was introduced nationally in 2014. “AP Capstone is not like any other course that you’ll take in high school,” Turakhia said. “Although there are high school classes that have structure — there’s this material you have to cover — AP Capstone lets you choose what you want to do and ride with it. “So you’re learning more about something you already love.” VV

Husband, wife duo share passion for teaching students BY JULIE STURGEON

Viera High School teachers James Brand and Amy O’Reilly-Brand share more than a marriage. They share a love of teaching. The husband and wife teachers are passionate about their chosen subjects, and they are passionate about their students. O’Reilly-Brand teaches reading, while James Brand teaches U.S. History.

“Standardized testing has changed teaching and it can be a struggle for many students.” — Amy O'Reilly Brand

“I’ve always chosen to work with struggling students, O’Reilly-Brand said. “I find it very rewarding. We have graduating seniors right now who have worked very hard.” She said that standardized testing has changed teaching and it can be a struggle for many students. “Reading for enjoyment tends to decrease among high school students. I really try to get my kids to love reading.” On certain days, she allows students to read a book of their choice with the goal of enhancing their enjoyment of reading. Many of the students in O’Reilly-Brand’s ninth-grade classes move on to husband Brand’s class for 10th-grade U.S. History at Viera High School. “I love being able to teach history in a perspective students can understand,” Brand said. “A lot of kids coming into my class don’t know much about U.S. History. They want to know what’s going on right

I was a cut-up in school, and I don’t want my students to be like I was.” Brand’s sense of humor likely helps him bond with his students. “I wanted to have my class right next to my wife but she wouldn’t let me,” he joked.

Brand served as a Marine prior to teaching, then retired in 2003. That’s when he decided to become a teacher. Fortunately, his schooling was paid for due to his service. O’Reilly-Brand has been teaching at Viera High since the school opened. She began her teaching career 20 years ago. Although the Brands are separated by just one classroom, they rarely see each other during the school day due to their busy teaching schedules. Life after school is hectic for the couple also. Landi leaves a legacy at Holy Trinity BY CARL KOTALA

It didn't take long to leave a legacy as headmaster at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. The 71-year-old Landi, who is leaving the school after two years following the hiring of Katherine Cobb as the school’s first-ever president, made an impact that could benefit both

students and the community for years to come. The Academic Merit Scholarship Program Landi introduced gives academically deserving students in grades 5 to 12 the opportunity to attend the school who would not otherwise have the means. The school has also brought in academic coaches to help

Additionally, enrollment is up 10 percent from this stage last year and as of May 9, Holy Trinity had raised $691,241. “We’ve raised the level of giving at the school, and I don’t think it’s going to fall back,” Landi said. “I think on an annual basis, we doubled it. That was a big deal for me.” So much so that Landi and his wife, Kristina, often donated their own money to help the school. Landi said he plans to retire — for the fourth time — before possibly looking for another job in 2018. “I’ve enjoyed a great relationship with my colleagues,” he said of his time at Holy Trinity. “The children are beguiling and positive. New Suntree principal has passion for sports BY JULIE KINZEY

Mims Elementary School principal Shari Tressler will be the new principal at Suntree Elementary. She replaces Meachell Giombetti, who retired after seven years at the helm of Suntree and more than 30 years at the Brevard County School District. Like Giombetti, Tressler served for many years at a Title I school, dealing with the challenges that come with being located in an economically disadvantaged area.

“I am looking forward to seeing how schools are in another part of the county,” Tressler said. “Suntree Elementary has a wonderful and successful history and I am proud to be a part of that.” Tressler has more than 18 years of experience in education. She started at Mims Elementary as a sixth-grade teacher before serving as assistant principal and then principal. A native to the area, Tressler graduated from Cocoa High in 1990 and has witnessed Brevard

She holds a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Rollins College, a master's degree in Instructional Leadership from Saint Leo University and she is currently pursuing her doctorate of education at Nova Southeastern University. I know Suntree has strong and successful relationships with all of these groups and I look forward to being a part of that.” Being a part of the community is not only in the job description, she has spent many hours on the sidelines watching her children play sports. Passionate about sports, her family particularly loves baseball. She and her husband, retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Barry Tressler, named all five of their children after famous ball players: Brett, 26; Brooke, 25; Bari, 22; Chance, 13; and Casey, 11. Tressler said she loves children and she loves to learn as well as travel, spending her down-time touring universities across on that,” she said. “I want to propose a permit that restaurants can get so that they can give their extra food to these homeless shelters and there aren’t any limitations on it for them.” Coming up with a way to help others isn’t just a way for McDermott to get elected to a position at Girls State. Biloxi, Miss. has become a popular destination for many Brevard County seniors. The gambling resort, known for its casinos and sandy beaches, is a favorite for those interested in a fun-filled group trip offered by Laura Kane Travel. “This is a very popular trip that fills up each month,” said Laura Kane, the owner of Laura Kane Travel. “We have some Brevard seniors who go every single month. We have a wonderful hostess who keeps our passengers busy during the trip with games like Bingo. The trip goes by fast.” The monthly Biloxi trips by Laura Kane Travel feature three nights at the Beau Rivage hotel and roundtrip luxury motorcoach from Melbourne. The Beau Rivage is a five star, MGM hotel with a casino on site. It is highly rated on Trip Advisor. “We now have a bus from

Brief life grants help future babies, families

BY MIKE GAFFEY

The Suntree-based Brianna Marie Foundation announced April 25 a grant in the amount of $50,000 will go toward fetal surgery research, to be awarded this fall. Created by Suntree residents Aran and Patrick Hissam in memory of their infant daughter Brianna Marie — who died in 2012 just 15 hours after her March 12 birth — the nonprofit foundation now has raised $250,000 for research, development and awareness of fetal therapies and surgeries. “I love that we are able to offer hope to parents through

the hard-working doctors who specialize in the field of Fetal Medicine,” Aran Hissam said. The funds are raised through the Brianna Marie Foundation 5K Run/Walk held each March on or around Brianna Marie's birthday. Gabe Montague of Viera thought the Brianna Marie Foundation 5K was for a worthy cause, and he made the 2016 race his first-ever 5K run. After coming in sixth, the 13-year-old member of the Johnson Middle School track team tried again during the fifth annual run at Wickham Park on March 11. This time, he finished as the overall

The malady affects between 1 in 600 to 1 in 4,000 pregnancies in the United States. Three fetal surgeries performed by Dr. Ruben Quintero of Miami were not enough to save her. The foundation’s main fundraiser also featured a run for children 8 and younger and a silent auction that raised $6,095, Aran Hissam said. Key sponsors included Dr. Bradford Wolk, Hibiscus Women’s Care and the Fetal Health Foundation. Funds have gone toward two previous grants named for Brianna Marie by the Fetal Health Foundation, which asked the couple to be on its selection committee. One grant funded the purchase of a 3-D printer for John Hopkins University so that doctors can print out a

Another grant went to the University College of London Institute for Women’s Health, where the lead investigator is studying how to prevent congenital diaphragmatic hernia, an anomaly that disturbs fetal lung development. The Hissams also have invested in Dr. Quintero’s research and in a study for a patch to be used in utero on fetuses with spina bifida. Another benefit of the

foundation is that it offers support to parents who have lost a child or are seeking help, Hissam said. “I am not a doctor or a therapist but a parent who has lived through the unimaginable, and sometimes hearing from someone who has walked in their shoes helps,” she stated. Rotary Clubs, volunteers conduct annual cleanup of Rotary Park BY JULIE STURGEON

The Rotary Park at Suntree is ready for summer. Bushes and trees are trimmed, beds have been weeded and the park looks immaculate. Vascular Vein Center opens first location in Brevard County BY JEFF NAVIN

Dr. Hai H. Kenney and his wife Kimberly have loved Brevard County since moving to the area in 2007. Now, there’s even more of a reason to stay. Kenney, who has worked for Health First Holmes Regional Center since coming to the area, now will channel most of his energy to the first Vascular Vein Center facility to be opened in Brevard County. Vascular Vein Center has six centers in the Orlando

area. The new facility will be located at Riverview Tower at Suntree, which is located at 6525 Third Street, Suite 208. Dr. Samuel Martin, who owns the other six VVC centers, will be his partner Shana Crovo, ARNP, will be the nurse. An open house will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, June 15. Kenney will meet and greet the public from noon to 1 p.m. “When I left West Palm Beach, they had four new positions at Holmes,’’ said the

We knew that this would be a place to put our roots down.’’ Kenney and his family left Vietnam in 1974 to live in the United States. They settled in Delaware, and he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Delaware. He thought about becoming a pharmacist before obtaining a master’s degree in veterinary pathology and molecular virology from Ohio State University. After that, Kenney went to medical school at Ohio University. He served his residency in radiology with a sub-specialty in vascular and interventional radiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He served his fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Through his VVC center,

Kenney hopes to enlighten Brevard County residents on the dangers of vascular vein disease. “People think it’s all cosmetic and that you’re vain if you go for treatment,’’ Kenney said. “They feel what we do is not covered by VIERA VOICE Jill Blue-Gaines Dr. Hai H. Can we create a plastic-bag-free environment? Introduced to the American public in the 1970s by ExxonMobil, plastic bags were not well received by consumers at first, who preferred the familiar, sturdy paper bags. It was not until the 1980s, after businesses realized that plastic bags were “simply much cheaper for stores to purchase than paper bags, [and were] also waterproof and stronger than paper bags,” that plastic bags became the norm. Their light weight and convenience made them acceptable and even popular among shoppers. By 1985, 75 percent of American grocery stores carried plastic bags. In 2011, the estimated number of plastic bags used each year in the United States was around 102 billion (Rolling Stone) and still less than 1 percent are recycled. As the use of plastic bags increased, concerns

about their impact grew among environmentalists. Besides being made from an unsustainable byproduct of oil and natural gas — as any plastic — plastic bags are found flying around, polluting streets and waterways, where they become a threat to wildlife. Birds get trapped in them and “marine animals often mistake the plastic bags for food and ingest them, leading to starvation, suffocation or drowning.” The cost of using plastic bags has affected communities that must spend time and money on cleanups, and harms our oceans, which end

up being the last destination for the flying bags. Recycling facilities also feel the impact of plastic bags. Plastic bag removal represents about 25 percent of their labor cost. If the bags are not removed from the processing line, they jam sorting equipment. The negative effects of using plastic bags have been decisive for many countries to implement policies either banning or imposing fees on plastic bags. Bangladesh, China and Italy are examples of countries that have banned plastic bags altogether. Ireland’s imposition of a 15-cent fee has resulted in a 95-percent reduction in use (Worldwatch). Chemical,” has been strongly investing resources “to overturn bans on plastic bags, cast doubt on legitimate scientific studies and even file lawsuits against anti-bag activists.” Despite steps taken by the ACC, a growing number of municipalities have passed measures restricting the use of plastic bags. Washington, D.C. has imposed a 5-cent fee on plastic bags, and in 2016 California confirmed the ban on plastic bags through a referendum. In May 2017, Coral Gables became the first city in Florida to ban

plastic bags. Businesses also are joining in the effort. IKEA stores, for example, only offer customers one option: reusable bags — available for a fee. And just last year Adidas “removed approximately 70 million plastic bags from 14,000 Adidas stores across 91 countries” as part of their Brand Sustainability project. Grocery stores such as Target and Lucky’s Market implemented incentive programs for shoppers to

Cocoa Beach Junior/Senior High School’s Army JROTC prepares to present the colors at a MOAACC luncheon honoring Brevard students who were appointed to military academies or received ROTC college scholarships. BY R. NORMAN MOODY

When Ken Willoughby first visited the United States Military Academy at West Point, he was sure it was where he wanted to start his military career following graduation from Astronaut High. “As soon as I first stepped on the campus, I knew I belonged there,” said Willoughby, who will play football for the Black Knights. The Military Officers Association of America Cape Canaveral chapter, during a luncheon May 16, honored Willoughby and 23 other Brevard graduating high school seniors who were appointed to military academies or received Reserve Officer Training Corps college scholarships. “It’s definitely an honor,” said Willoughby, who plans to major in civil engineering. “It’s awesome that they take care of their own.” For years, MOAACC members have honored students headed to military careers during the luncheons at the Colony Hall in the Indian River Colony Club community in Viera. Ivanska Rosich, who graduated from Florida Preparatory Academy and is headed to the Air Force Academy to study biology, said it was an encouragement to the students as they leave to begin their military careers. “It’s more like an honor,” she said. “It’s a big deal.” MOAACC first vice president

Gary Eppler said that those appointed to the academies and selected for ROTC scholarships are all well rounded and mature students. “It’s inspiring,” he said before the students were presented to an audience of about 100. “They are not the typical high school kids.” Merritt Island High graduate Miles Butler said he was appreciative that the veterans have an interest in seeing the students following in their footsteps and succeeding in their military careers. The other students are: Viera High Kyle Crocker – Marion Military Institute

Brandon Turney – ROTC Marion Military Institute Nicole Sjoden – ROTC EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University Ferris Thrower – ROTC Marion Military Institute Shahana Gray – Air Force Academy Prep School Nicholas Hibbs – ROTC Marion Military Institute Logan Ewing – ROTC University of Central Florida Jack Adams – ROTC University of Florida. Viera/Suntree-based Senior Life newspaper turns 20

BY LINDA WIGGINS

It is entirely appropriate that the 20th anniversary issue of Senior Life newspaper showcases the importance of volunteerism. The Viera/ Suntree-based publication targets boomer, seniors and their families across Brevard and is a sister paper to the Viera Voice. The inaugural June 1997 issue featured Brevard Zoo docent Andy Arbuckle on the cover taking questions from preschoolers exploring the Petting Zoo area of the top attraction. The accompanying front-page story outlined the many reasons to volunteer in terms of health of community and

individual, and the inside pages showcased the zoo docent program in detail. “Andy was very active in retirement. He left nothing undone that he wanted to do,” said Marilyn Arbuckle, his wife of 66 years until his passing in 2015. “He never cared to have commendations for his good works because he said he always got the most out of the bargain.” Showcasing good works spurs volunteers to do more, and gets others into the act, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said. "Senior Life has been a vital resource to the community by consistently showcasing the missions of charities

that make our community an even better place to live, as we lift up those less fortunate," said Ivey, who himself leads or supports charities from animal welfare to children's causes and beyond. He is the starter each year for runners and walkers in the Color Me Healthy 5K of the Bluewater Foundation, which Senior Life/Viera Voice publisher Jill Blue-Gaines founded in 2015 to amplify the good done by local charities. "By spotlighting these entities, Blue-Gaines has helped put many of them on the map and has kept them on our minds and hearts during the past two decades, not to mention engaging seniors who have the time, talent and treasures to help them grow. This is actually a great service to the health and lives of boomers and seniors who become

involved.” The League of Women Voters of the Space Coast commended Senior Life for its support of an event founded by Blue-Gaines that is hosted by Viera Voice, the Charlie Corbeil Conservation Awards, created in memory of Suntree/Viera volunteer Charlie Corbeil to reward volunteers and experts to further the cause of conservation. Corbeil, a Florida Master Naturalist and renowned photographer, was a champion of the Viera Wetlands at the west end of Wickham Road. “We are an all-volunteer organization, so we know what a powerhouse volunteers provide,” said LWVSC co-president Marilynn Collins. “We congratulate Senior Life on its 20th anniversary for all it has done for the community over the years and in particular

Jill Blue-Gaines for creating The Charlie Awards, which the League has supported from its inception.” For Blue-Gaines, the Senior Life focus on volunteerism was merely one more way to encourage seniors to live their best life possible at any age, the publication's underlying mantra. “This is an awesome time in life because we finally have the opportunity to explore what we really want to do now that our major financial obligations are behind us,” Blue-Gaines said. “It's time to set aside fear and explore. Many seniors have volunteered their way into rewarding encore careers. The last thing we want to leave behind is our potential. We want to use that up.” To view the June 1997 issue of Senior Life, go tovieravoice. com/Senior-Life/. VV

PLASTIC BAGS

continued from page 28

bring in their own reusable bags. Target refunds 5 cents per reusable bag, while Lucky’s Market (LuckysMarket.com/westmelbourne-florida/) took the incentive a little further and created a program, called Bag for Change, to help raise funds for local nonprofit organizations. At checkout, shoppers who bring their own reusable bags have the option to either receive a 10cent refund per bag or donate a 10-cent wooden chip per bag to one of the three nonprofit organizations featured in the store for the quarter. Recycle Brevard was fortunate to be one of the nonprofits selected for the program in the quarter that began May 21. So next time you shop at Lucky’s, remember to bring your reusable bags and please consider donating your wooden dimes to Recycle Brevard. No matter which way it’s done, reducing the number of plastic bags that circulate in our community has become crucial to preventing ocean pollution and littering as well as protecting our wildlife. While we don’t have legislation determining the fate of plastic bags in our area, we still can make a difference by bringing our own bags when we shop, requesting our favorite stores to provide alternative bags and asking stores to create incentive programs. It might sound like too little, but every step taken in the right direction is one step closer to a plastic-bagfree environment. VV Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@3RsAndBeyond.org.
