The Viera High School Class of 2017 celebrates at the close of its graduation ceremony on May 19. More photos on page 30 and VieraVoice.com. BY DARRELL WOEHLER
On a warm and very windy night on Friday, May 19 in front of a standingroom-only crowd at Viera High School’s football stadium, there was all the usual pomp and circumstance you would expect. The presentation of colors was performed by by VHS JROTC Color Guard Unit and the National Anthem was sung by the VHS Chorus members of the Class of 2017. Then, it was time for the two Principal’s Scholars as class speakers, Valeria Villanueva and Jacqueline Lamb. Villanueva spoke about the compassion exhibited by fellow students during the past four years and the hope for this to continue into the future. Lamb presented a partial timeline in how she had been told that her senior year in high school would go by in a blink. And, that she was standing before the 521 other graduates to inform them that it did. It’s likely that this also will happen in most of their future endeavors as well. Heather Chiarillo, who plans to study criminology, and Khadija Motola, who plans to study physical therapy. Both will attend Eastern Florida State College. Akela Bryant wants to study interior design at Seminole State, and Sara Lynch will begin her pre-med studies at Eastern Florida State College. Dix, playing and singing the VHS Alma Mater. Then, it was the turning of the tassels, and the obligatory tossing of the caps. Later came the mad rush of family and friends onto the field for congratulations, flowers and tears. This went on well into the night, until it was time to turn out the lights both on the field and on these senior students’ time in high school. VV
