Viera Wetlands need more volunteers, donations BY JULIE STURGEON
Birding enthusiasts and nature lovers flock to the Viera Wetlands daily to enjoy watching the colorful show of waterfowl, shore birds and the occasional alligator. Many of those same enthusiasts will attend the ninth annual Viera Wetlands Nature Festival on April 21 and 22. As the Viera Wetlands becomes more popular, the challenge of preserving the unique wildlife area increases. According to the Board of County Commissioners, as many as 210,000 visitors tour the wetlands each year. The 200 or so acres are neither a conservation area nor a park. “The wetlands were constructed as a component of the water treatment facility,’’ said Raleigh Berry, the Senior Environmental Scientist for Brevard County Natural Resources. “As such, the funding is derived through Utility Services and is spent on the treatment of sewage, not recreational purposes. This leaves us in a pickle.” The South Central Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility, located adjacent to the wetlands, predated the wilderness area, according to Berry. The outlying wetlands design, which comprises four 35-acre cells of water and a central lake, provides variable habitats for birds and animals. The wetlands, properly called the Rich Grissom Memorial Wetlands, were named for a longtime employee at the water treatment plant. Although the Department of Natural Resources manages the wetlands,

Since government funding is slated for wastewater treatment, visitors’ monetary contributions are paramount. Just a dollar or two per visit can add up to the thousands of dollars per year necessary for the preservation of a treasured Viera wilderness. It is not often that a key component to water safety provides an immeasurable amount of natural beauty. A sanctuary for wildlife, the Viera Wetlands also provide an opportunity for residents to escape and enjoy natural Florida untouched by development. East Coast Christian Center Easter Egg Hunt bigger than ever SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE
East Coast Christian Center is excited to host its third annual East Coast Christian Center Easter Egg Hunt. It will be Brevard County’s largest egg hunt, with more than 20,000 eggs. The free event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at Viera High School’s football field. The egg hunt is for children between the ages of 2 and 12. Viera Pizza will provide free pizza throughout the event. A three-day cruise for two will be given away to a lucky registrant. An addition to this year’s egg hunt will be a new area for families with specialneeds children. Acceptance is hard to find in this world. East Coast Christian Center is a life-giving church that has room for people to find the community that will accept and empower them to make a difference in this world. East Coast Christian Center offers two services — 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. — each Sunday at Viera High School. Since launching two services in October, East Coast Christian Center has

experienced significant growth. The church eventually hopes to construct its own building in the future. Matt Stallbaum, the East Coast Christian Center pastor, hopes to build a following and urges people to attend his services. ““We have access to the gym, media center and several classrooms,” Stallbaum said. “Cleanliness, safety and fun are at the core of what we do.” The children’s area is a big priority. “Our youth programs
are a place where teens make friends,’’ Stallbaum said. “They also have an opportunity to join an internship program to build life experiences and leadership training for college and beyond.” A special Easter Service will be offered Sunday, April 1. “Find your seat this Sunday and your new community at 9:15 a.m. or 10:45 a.m. at Viera High School. There is real momentum at East Coast Christian Center right now. Come experience the life-giving church that will last.” VV
East Coast Christian Center says it will triple its volunteers for this year's East Coast Christian Center Easter Egg Hunt.

Scoring Tee Initiative at Duran will give players more options BY CARL KOTALA
Duran Golf Club is trying to put a little fun back in the game. The club will begin introducing a new Scoring Tee Initiative this summer based on recommendations by the PGA of America and the National Golf Foundation to help amateur golfers with slower swing speeds and drive lengths than the pros. “Basically, when Tiger Woods came on the scene, they started lengthening golf courses because these guys were overpowering the golf courses,”

“It started at Augusta National. They started adding so much length to it, they called it ‘Tiger-proofing’ the golf course.” Augusta wasn’t the only one. Soon golf courses were being designed all over the country for the bigger hitters. “At the same time, your average amateur, those golf courses got too long for them,” Morrison said. “We got into situations where they just became accustomed to not being able to reach the green in regulation, taking three shots to get on a Par 4, having to hit a driver on a Par 3, things like that. “The game isn’t as enjoyable that way. You don’t have putts for birdie. You don’t have good opportunities for pars. “What this initiative does is it informs the golfer what tee box they should be playing in relation to their swing speed, and basically how far they hit the golf ball.” Under the new initiative, Duran will look to develop a new set of tees that fall in the 4,300 to 4,500 range, which are more than 800 yards shorter than the current women’s tees. The new tees
will be identified by roman numerals instead of the traditional colors that golfers use. Duran General Manager David Tomczak said the club will look to phase in the new initiative during the next two years, beginning this summer on six to eight of the longest holes on the Championship Course. Using a TrackMan device provided by Duran’s Director of Instruction Justin Blazer, golfers will be advised of their swing speed and other data to let them know how far they hit the ball. There also is a chart that recommends the tee from which they should be hitting. “Most people have never been told what tees should I be playing,” Tomczak said. “They just (think) I guess if I play pretty well, I should be playing the blue tees. If I’m not (playing well), I should play the white tees. Those are the only options I’ve got. “We believe we’re going to see a lot of men moving up to play more forward tees, but even the new scoring tees that we have.”

Viera baseball may be young, but expectations are high BY CARL KOTALA
There will be a number of things that will be different about the Viera High baseball team this season: * New faces in big roles. * More of a small-ball approach after years of having some big bats in the lineup. And let’s not forget … the new field. The Hawks will play 16 of 23 regular-season games at the new USSSA Space Coast Complex. And that doesn’t even include a potential Cape Coast Conference title game, or the district tournament. “It’s going to be a lot of fun coaching this club,” Viera coach Bob Doty said. “We always have high expectations of trying to win 20 games, win our district and do as well as we can in the conference. But I think playing here is going to be really enjoyable. “… It’s going to bring out the best in players.” While the Hawks will be led by veterans like team co-captains Jordan Kaplan, Connor Leary, Andrew Brait and Colton Farrington, there will be a lot of younger players playing key roles as well. Left-hander Alberto McCarthy and fellow sophomore Christian Stubbendeck will get plenty of mound time behind No. 1 starter Kaplan. The catching spot will be filled by either sophomore Declan McDermott or junior Joe Veltri. Farrington will be

at first with juniors Leary and Brait forming perhaps the best second baseshortstop duo in the county. Senior Logan Plante will take over at third with the outfield consisting of Taylor Pruett in right, Kaplan in center (when he’s not pitching) and Jordan Allen in left. “I think we’re going to have a great year this year, honestly,” Kaplan said. “We’re going to have to learn to work together, the younger guys are going to have to learn to step up, and we’ll have a good shot. “We made it to the regional finals last year. I don’t see why we can’t make it to states this year.” Leary, who said he loves the way the younger players have been grinding so far, has also been working on his own game with the help of a Major
League player. “I’ve been working with Dee Gordon for a little bit,” Leary said. “He’s really helped me out with my fielding. I had three errors last year out of 30 games. That’s good, but I

back to the area and give back to the game that’s done so much for me. “I’m loving every second of it.” Breeden, who also teaches World History Honors and Economics Honors at the school, inherited a talented group of Hawks that have been to the Class 7A regional finals two out of the past three years. With the pitching of Karyana Mitchell and Corrin Flajole, an offense led by Kelly Bishop, Taylor Jensen and Brianna Hatley, and a talented roster that also includes Zoie Hatley, Madison Headley, Morgan Mordas, Taryn Aebli, Kennedy Hewitt and Kelsey Reiter, Viera has a legitimate shot to get to the state final four that has eluded it so many times. Bishop and fellow seniors Hatley and Headley are certainly determined to make that happen. “We’re definitely motivated,” Headley said. “I feel like we’ve been doing this for four years and it’s our last year and we really want to get there.” The new coaching staff, the players believe, can help get them there. “I feel like we’re being taken to a new direction this year,” Hatley said. “I’m really excited about that. They push us really hard and they hold us accountable for everything. “They’re helping us to become great people on and off the field. They’re putting values into us for sure. I’m really excited.” The Hawks also are enjoying a different hitting

Tigers believe they can surprise people once again BY CARL KOTALA
Last year was a historic season for the Holy Trinity softball team. And as far as coach John Clarson is concerned, there isn’t any reason to think the Tigers aren’t capable of doing something special again. “I think we’re going to be as strong as we were last year, maybe even stronger,” he said. After a solid regular season, last year’s team knocked off No. 1 seed Cocoa Beach in the semifinals to reach its first district championship game since 2003. While the Tigers graduated a big bat in Talia Douglas — a star player since the seventhgrade — they picked up two new players who have star potential themselves. Junior catcher Olivia Nimmo, a transfer from Viera High, hit a double in her first at-bat for the Tigers in a preseason classic game. Clarson described seventh grade middle infielder Nadia English as a natural athlete who learns quickly and already possesses an advanced set of skills. Add those two to experienced returners

Sarah Kimmerling and it’s easy to see why there is so much optimism around the program coming off of last
year’s success. “It gives us more expectations,” Roach said. “In previous years, teams thought of us as, ‘Oh, it’s just a practice game.’ “Now, we have a bunch of players and we’ve developed really well. We’re actually a name out there and people know who we are.” One aspect that should benefit the Tigers greatly this season is the versatility of the players to play multiple positions, allowing Clarson to stack his lineup a number of different ways to keep core players on the field at all times. Roach, one of only two seniors on the team (Bailey Vickers is the other), gives the Tigers a solid pitcher on the mound with Dimmer — a freshman — getting plenty of mound time as well. “Allison is what I call a finesse pitcher,” Clarson said. “She can control the strike zone, move the ball up and down and has good off-speed pitches. “Her drop ball is phenomenal. When I watch the batters swing, they’re

The Academies of Viera High School will conduct its annual VHS Academy Classic golf tournament on March 10 at Baytree National Golf Links. Proceeds from the event will benefit the school’s Academy of Business and Finance and the Academy for Communication, Art + Design. The goal of this year’s fundraiser is to purchase two full laptop carts. The action kicks off with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $300 for a foursome or $80 a player, with those fees rising to $375 per foursome and $100 per player two weeks prior to the event.
The price includes course fees, breakfast snacks, lunch, raffle ticket and goodie bag. There will also be a longest drive, closest-to-the-pin and a hole-in-one competition. Prizes include four rounds of golf at Baytree and a gift card for first place. Second and third-place finishers receive a gift card and a surprise. The last-place finisher receives a surprise gift package. One player will have a chance at $10,000. There are sponsorship opportunities ranging from $5,000 to $150. Players can register for the tournament by handdelivering or mailing the payment to Viera High School, Attn: Barbara Kelly, 6103 Stadium Parkway, Melbourne FL 32940. VV

usually missing by a foot or more when her ball is working.” If the Tigers can have another strong season on defense and get some clutch hitting in some big spots, they could very well make a name for themselves once again. “I think we can surprise some more people again this year,” Clarson said. If they do, the Tigers might have a shot to get back to the postseason. And after last season, that’s exactly what’s on their minds. “It definitely gives us more confidence in what we can accomplish,” Bain said. VV

Duran tested out the new options last month and asked golfers to take a survey to give their feedback. Tomczak has asked players to give the new scoring tees a try at least once. “People that move up to the tee will probably shoot a score that they’ve never shot before,” he said. “That’s not a bad thing.” Make no mistake, though. Golfers will not be forced to play from the new tees if they don’t want to, and the overall course will not be compromised. “We’re not shrinking the golf course,” Morrison said. “It’s not like we’re moving the greens in. We’re still a championship golf course with a quality set of black tees. It’s a challenging course. “We’re just adding some other options, and trying to inform the consumer of where they should be playing. That was one of the misconceptions, that Duran was turning into a shorter course. We still have those options to challenge the better players in the world, too.” VV

March is a fine time to be on golf course BY DAVID D. HORST
Finally, the beautiful golfing weather has returned! If it could only stay this way year round. The final round of the Viera East Men’s Golf Association’s Ryder Cup recently was held in weather near the freezing mark, not including the wind-chill factor. It was a challenging round of golf. The Red Team came from behind to prevail and all the golfers thawed out at Divots, Viera East’s restaurant, after play concluded. In VEMA’s next event, John McComas, Sam Speziale, Kevin Maloney and Greg Kurr finished first in the net best-ball format. The team of Mike Piccininni, Dennis Lamb, Tony Hines and David Horst tied the team of Guy Sullivan, Robert Damron, Mike Pope and Gary Baxter for second place. Bruce Schwanda on No. 4, Tom Bergeron on No. 7, Bob David on No. 13 and Roger Harvie on No. 16 were closest-to-the-pin. St. Mary’s student sells cookies for soldiers BY JEFF NAVIN
Kate Yelvington believes that everyone should have a Girl Scouts cookie. Or two. American soldiers, who are stationed overseas, deserve at least one box — or more — if the 8-year-old Brownie had her way. “It will make them happy,’’ said Yelvington, who is a
member of the Manatee Shore Community Girl Scouts under Citrus Council Troop 1438 for the second consecutive year. “They should get to eat some cookies. They’re across the seas and stuff, and we shouldn’t really forget them. They’re military soldiers who fight for our freedom and a lot of them have died.’’

Manatee Shore Community Girl Scouts under Citrus Council Troop 1438 are enthusiastic about selling Girl Scout Cookies. Most of the Brownies are students at St. Mary's Catholic School in Rockledge.
Every $4 increment buys a box of cookies for American soldiers. Yelvington sold 252 boxes of cookies last year. This year, her goal is to sell 400 boxes. Nine types of cookies are being sold this season — Thank-A-Lot, Girl Scouts S’mores, Lemonades, Shortbread, Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Patties, Caramel deLites, Peanut Butter Sandwich and a Gluten Free cookie. “I like the Caramel deLites because they’re really sweet, but not super sweet,’’ Yelvington said. “They’re good. Thin Mints are my second favorite, probably.’’ The Girl Scouts have established five skill sets in the cookie program to help the girls become future leaders. Goal setting, decision
“My favorite neighbor Mr. Jim (Mulligan) likes the Thin Mints. He likes to freeze them. He's my best customer.” — Kate Yelvington making, money management, people skills and business ethics are important qualities to learn. “I don’t always want to go out and sell cookies,’’ said Yelvington, who is a third grader at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Rockledge. “Sometimes, I want to play. I’ve got to make sacrifices; I just can’t sit at home with a bunch of cookies behind
my back. I can’t play and sell cookies at the same time.’’ Members of the troop are limited to two-hour shifts when they sell cookies in booths outside of various local businesses. Sometimes, the easiest sales are nearby. “My favorite neighbor Mr. Jim (Mulligan) likes the Thin Mints,’’ Yelvington said. “He likes to freeze them. He’s my best customer.’’ Yelvington is a member of the cheerleading and pep squad at St. Mary’s. Her favorite classes are art, music, physical education and Spanish. She also sings in the choir. “I like it when my mom says I earned my cookie,’’ Yelvington said. “She lets me eat two. Four has never happened.’’ VV

Holy Trinity students donate pajamas, books to local kids BY CARL KOTALA
It might have started out as a simple community service project, but the more Holy Trinity junior Soy Choi looked into it, the more personal the mission became for her and other members of the school’s National English Honor Society. Inspired by an email she received from a national clothing company after Hurricane Irma, Holy Trinity senior Sydney Levy suggested the school’s NEHS group collect pajamas and books to give to children in need. Choi then got in contact with the Pajama Program, a national organization dedicated to ensuring children have a clean pair of pajamas and a bedtime story at night. The Pajama Program suggested Holy Trinity students give to the Brevard Family Partnership, a nonprofit group that oversees 269 foster children in Brevard County, who have been placed in 143 foster homes. “When I first reached out to the PJ Program, I didn’t know where these items would go to,” Choi said. “After they connected me to Brevard Family Partnership, it became more personal. “And after hearing that many of the students don’t have many resources, I felt like that the items we collected would be of great use to them.” The students were able to collect 162 pairs of pajamas and 153 books, which were donated last month. LaChrista Jones, Director of Licensing for the Brevard Family Partnership, said the donations would have a big impact on the children, many
of whom were removed from abusive homes. “The impact is huge, because a lot of our kids that come into care … sometimes, they just leave their home with the clothes on their back,” Jones said. “A lot of times, we don’t have the opportunity to pack their bag. “To arrive at a home and have a new pair of pajamas and also a book, it has a huge impact. It gives the foster parents an opportunity to read them a bedtime story.” Faculty advisor Stefanie Pedicini, who said she would love to do the drive again, was impressed with the way the students responded. While NEHS members were required to bring in at least one book or one pair of pajamas, Pedicini said there was not a single instance where a student came into her class and donated just one item. In fact, they had to add two more big boxes to collect everything. Levy also was impressed with her classmates, noting that having a clean pair of pajamas to wear at night is something every student could relate to. And knowing that their donations were going to help local kids made the experience more special. “I was very impressed with the student body,” Levy said. “We do a couple of different drives throughout the year, not just NEHS, but all of the different honor societies. The books and pajama (bins) were spread out over four different places. “When it all came together at the end, to see that we had so many students that cared enough to bring in pajamas and books was really nice.” VV

Viera robotics team wins state, heads to Super South Regionals BY CARL KOTALA
They didn’t just beat the competition. They crushed them. Viera High’s PINK Alliance Robotics team outscored a field of 37 competitors by more than 200 points at the state tournament in Jacksonville last month and is headed to Athens, Ga. for the Super South Regional from March 8 to 10.
“Our kids and our robot blew away the competition. I’m incredibly proud of our talented, hardworking mentors and students. They deserve every bit of this accomplishment.” — David Parker
A victory there would send the team to the world championships in Houston in April. Using a robot they designed and named Overkill, the students took part in a First Tech Challenge competition called Relic Recovery. “Basically, the purpose of the game was to grab cubes and score them in (these) side boxes, and then also pick up the relics and place them outside the field on different scoring pads, right side up if you could,” Viera High senior and team captain Derek Perdomo told the Viera Voice earlier. “The last part was also to be able to scan a picture on the wall and be able to interpret that picture to decide which of the boxes to score in.” The PINK Alliance is made up of students from Viera High and four other schools. Members of the team from Viera include: Perdomo; Logan Bautista-Leaf; Daniel Del

HOSA Club members surprise themselves at first competition BY CARL KOTALA
A group of 21 Viera High students walked into Deltona High School last month. They were outnumbered. They were nervous. This was, after all, the first time they’d ever been to a Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, (HOSA) competition. And they were a firstyear club, going against other schools, like Deltona, which had 165 entrants, or Rockledge, which had a history of dominating one particular category. Subjects for the competition varied. Some students already had taken tests about their knowledge and were simply there to find out if and where they had placed. Others had to come with displays or videos they had made and present them to judges. There was no way, they thought, they would place very high.
Heck, club president Taylor Conway said she and her teammates Nivetha Aravind and Catelyn Cowart weren’t even sure what they were going to say 15 minutes before they walked in to make their presentation on Public Service Announcements. With 14 people in their Health Occupations Display category, Viera HOSA club vice president Jayla Mercer and her friend, Hannah Levi, were saying they would be happy if they finished 12th. So imagine their surprise when ‌ they won the whole dang thing. “I threw my phone on accident,â€? Mercer laughed. Levi, meanwhile, just started running. And running. Conway already was on stage when it was announced that she, Aravind and Cowart had won their category (which had three teams entered), one which Rockledge had dominated for years. “I was just expecting to get third (because) it was our

Sheriff asks community to join team, help hunt bad guys BY JULIE STURGEON
Every Tuesday night, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey hosts a lively episode of “Wheel of Fugitive,” in an attempt to hunt down local lawbreakers. The weekly spinning session, a “Wheel of Fortune” parody, features mug shots of 10 Brevard County fugitives. A spinner then lands on one unlucky individual. Citizens are encouraged to tune in and contact the sheriff’s office with tips about the wanted men and women. “As soon as the spinner rolls, we start getting tips from citizens,” Ivey told a group of Viera and Suntree residents at a recent meeting. “We have fugitives who watch every week to see if they are in it. Whoever it lands on, that’s who we are coming after this week.” “Wheel of Fugitive” has won national acclaim for its success and innovation. In 2017, it was featured on networks such as CBS and Fox News. Catchy music and a healthy dose of Ivey’s humor mixed with a mission accompanies the brief video. “I will tell you that UCF just completed a study on “Wheel

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey is delighted with the popularity of his “Wheel of Fugitive” show which attempts to hunt down local lawbreakers.
“I have never seen a community that supports its law enforcement officers like this community does.” — Wayne Ivey of Fugitive’s” success, and it has an 88 percent success rate within three to five days,” Ivey said. “That means 88 percent of the fugitives shown either turn themselves in or they are arrested.”
Recently, Ivey added a new show called “Cookin’ up Justice” to the BSCO video lineup. The segment highlights favorite restaurant dishes from local chefs, followed by a crime prevention message or criminal spotlight. During the “Cookin’ up Justice” video, Ivey meets up with local chefs and assists them in preparing a restaurant specialty. While the meal is cooking, the film switches to “what’s cooking” with crime. A local criminal’s picture and details about a crime are highlighted. Viewers from the community are invited to call in tips, and Ivey politely asks the lawbreaker point blank to “do the right thing and turn yourself in.” A recent episode of “Cookin’ up Justice” featured Kelly’s Barbeque Pineapple Chili. Fresh ground beef and sausage are made in house and combined with fresh pineapple and mandarin oranges. “One of my favorite dishes when I come here,” Ivey said as he stirred the ingredients into a large pot. While the chili cooked, a local fugitive’s photo, name and last seen
whereabouts were displayed. As with “Wheel of Fugitive,” viewers can either contact the crime line or send a message on the app. Ivey thanked citizens for their involvement and their support of the BCSO. “I have been a (policeman) for going on 39 years now,”
Ivey told the citizens recently, “and I have never seen a community that supports its law enforcement officers like this community does.” VV To watch “Wheel of Fugitive,” go to Facebook.com/ BrevardCountySheriff/videos. View “Cookin’ up Justice” at Facebook.com/

The music of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Bach came back to life for a day as the Creative Music, Art & Learning Center held its annual Music Recital at Springs of Suntree Clubhouse on Feb. 17. There also was some HannaBarbera, West Indies Folk and Skynyrd to lighten the mood. The recital, which was held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., consisted of five recitals featuring 18 to 20 students. The total number of songs ranged from 18 to 26 for each recital. “This is an annual recital featuring violin, vocal, harps, guitar and the piano,’’ said Loretta Fox, the director and owner of the Creative Music, Art & Learning Center. “It’s a nice experience for the kids.’’ It was presented by the students of Dr. Loretta Fox, Karen Cochran, Lois Ertl, Teree Estcourt, Diana Knill and Lisa Egger. More than 150 students attend the Creative Music, Art & Learning Center. Caleb Klar, a pianist, played

Schubert’s “The Trout.” Klar’s father is a piano tuner, so his family thought playing the piano would be a good fit. Amanda Edwards has been taking violin lessons for five years and piano lessons for 10 years. She played Handel’s “Chorus from Judas Maccabaeus” on the violin and “Turkey in the Straw,’’ an American folk song, on the violin. Edwards then switched to the piano to play Kullak’s “Witches’ Dance” and Costello’s “Meerkat Capers.’’ Edwards’ mother, Lisa Edwards, recently began taking violin lessons. The elder Edwards played Brahms’ “Symphony Theme” before teaming up with her daughter to play Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto No. 5” as a violin duet. “I enjoy being able to learn and play music,’’ Amanda Edwards said. “Music is a big part of my life and a big part of my family.’’ Sophia Giorgianni is learning to play the guitar. She played “Merrily.’’ “My favorite artist is Taylor Swift,” Giorgianni said. “I want to follow after her because I love singing. All I

New technique for hair restoration offered in Suntree
BY JULIE STURGEON
Hair restoration is becoming more popular and technology has made the procedure less painful. At Gelman Hair Restoration, nurse practitioner Nikka Cohan recently talked about follicular unit extraction, a new process for hair restoration. FUE is surgical hair replacement that can have permanent results. “Patients have been highly satisfied with FUE,” said Cohan, who sees patients during the consultations. “It is a long-term solution to hair loss. And unlike the strip procedure, there is no long scar.” Individual follicles of hair are removed, then reinserted back into the scalp in the thinning area using a micro blade. Recovery is typically seven days. FUE is the procedure favored by Dr. Clifford Gelman and Dr. Abe Hardoon at Suntree Internal Medicine. The advantages of FUE are that there is no rejection by the

also will perform the FUE procedure. “The process is rather lengthy, at least four to five hours,” said Cohan, “because each follicle of hair is removed separately.” Patients should carefully follow the aftercare instructions such as elevating the head while sleeping and avoiding sun exposure to achieve optimal results. Following the transplant procedure, Cohan said, new hair growth should start in about three to five months. Transplanted hair should be fully grown ij3n about a year after the procedure.
Cohan said that the newly transplanted hair will continue to grow. “We make it very comfortable for patients,” Cohan said. “We know it is a long procedure, so patients can listen to music or bring a kindle. And, we provide food.” The cost of the procedure is based upon area of the head, not per follicle. The overall cost of the procedure can range from $5,000 to $10,000. body and there are no sutures or lengthy scar. Another method, the strip procedure, does leave a scar. Gelman provides a personalized technique and procedure for each patient, according to Cohan. Since
each patient has different expectations, he feels this is the best approach. Gelman, who has performed the technique since 2009, recently moved to Suntree Internal Medicine from Broadband Drive in Melbourne. Hardoon

Daylight saving time or “summer time” in some countries, allows us to enjoy the daylight of the summer months. By “springing” our clocks forward on March 11, we sacrifice normal sunrise times in order to have evening daylight last an hour longer. Officially, this practice dates back to the German Empire on April 30, 1916. Though Benjamin Franklin proposed a similar idea almost 100 years earlier. Now, continued to page 33

Space Coast Realtors open new building BY KATIE PARSONS
A brand-new building graces Wickham Drive, just north of the Pineda Causeway. The Space Coast Association of Realtors has centralized its operating offices to Palm Shores, with more space for other functions such as hosting events. Realtors, government officials and other business people from throughout Brevard recently met to celebrate a new addition to the Palm Shores community. The Space Coast Association of Realtors publicly opened the doors to its new building located at 2950 Pineda Plaza Way in Palm Shores. The move was made to be more centrally located and to be housed in a brand-new building. The 15,000-plus square-foot property merged two separate buildings located on Merritt Island and

in Melbourne. In addition to office space, the new building features a banquet room and additional meeting space. In the presence of guests and representatives from three area Chambers of Commerce, Space Coast Association of Realtors president Mike Artelli cut the ribbon after thanking those in attendance. “There are so many people who made this possible. I especially want to thank the community of Palm Shores for welcoming us,” Artelli said. Mayor of Palm Shores Carol McCormack spoke just before the ribbon cutting, thanking the realtors for coming to the town. The new building was built by West Melbourne based M.E. Construction, Inc. (MEC). The Space Coast Association of Realtors has a membership base of more than 3,900 realtors and business partners servicing Brevard County. VV

Sharing tables could reduce food waste in Brevard schools BY MARCIA BOOTH
During the 2014 Green Stride Tour, while visiting two United States Department of Education Green Ribbon schools in West Palm Beach, I learned about sharing tables. Sharing tables, as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in a memorandum of June 2016, are tables or stations where children can return whole food or beverage items they choose not to eat. Those items are then made available at no cost to other children who might want additional servings or to the ones participating in aftercare programs. Items not consumed during school meal services can be donated to nonprofit organizations or discarded. In a country where “up to 40 percent of the food is never eaten, but at the same time, one in eight Americans struggles to put enough food on the table” (National Resources Defense Council), the idea of establishing a sharing table in every school sounds like a good one. It will be good for the kids who are going hungry and good for the environment. As the EPA points out, “reducing wasted food has social, environmental

Children have no problem sharing their food.
and economic benefits [to existing problems]: In 2013, 14.3 percent of U.S. households were food insecure at some time during the year. That is 48 million Americans, of which 16 million are children, living in food insecure households. Wholesome, nutritious food should feed people, not landfills. Food is the largest stream of materials in American trash. Once wasted food reaches landfills, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. It is estimated that at the retail and consumer levels in the United States, food loss and waste totals $161 billion dollars.” In Minnesota, for example, “K-12 public schools generate an estimated
483,520 pounds of waste a day,” concludes a study done by Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. With approximately 1,681 K-12 public schools (Minnesota Department of Education), that averages to be 288 pounds of waste generated per school per day. The study found that 23.9 percent of that waste was food waste. If we apply those numbers to Brevard, we estimate that our 82 public schools, serving more than 75,000 students annually, generate an average of 23,616 pounds of waste per day; about 5,645 pounds per day of food waste. Because of numbers like those, more and more school districts from Palm Beach County to Vermont are adopting sharing tables. Brevard Public Schools (BPS) joined those districts just last November. “The motivation to offer this program is twofold: we can offer extra items to kids going hungry and we can divert waste from landfills. It’s a winwin for students and for the district,” said Kevin Thornton, the BPS Food and Nutrition Services director. “We now have 30 schools offering sharing tables and we want to see the program expand,” Thornton added.
One such school is Surfside Elementary. Surfside started its sharing table for nonperishable food about a month ago. The program has been going well and gained full support from the school community. What is not consumed is discarded at the end of the day. “A lot has been saved from the trash,” said Erica Maier, a GSP teacher at Surfside. “The greatest challenge is the need for adult monitoring.” The staff at the school has been doing that job. The school will need help to expand the program and include perishable food. Other schools plan to implement sharing tables in the near future. Manatee Elementary, for example, will start a pilot program after spring break. To set up a sharing table, a school needs to: Review the memo available at RecycleBrevard.org/2018/01/ sharing-tables-in-brevard-schools. html with a principal. For information, call Thornton at 321-633-1000, ext. 690 to inform BPS of the school’s intention to start the program. VV

Eau Gallie show will highlight Meagher's new art BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER
Jamie Meagher, a fine artist, graphic designer, art curator at Pizza Gallery and Grill in Viera, and the owner of Petal and Bone, will unveil his new art collection from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the First Friday March 2 Eau Gallie Arts District at the Standard Collective at 559 W. Eau Gallie Blvd. in Melbourne. The Anti-Gravity Festival Lego mural artist will present a combination of paintings on upcycled wood cuts crafted from discarded skateboard decks, his signature pop culture Lego character paintings and intricate wood cuts mounted in shadow boxes. “I think my art is a genre of a mix of pop and low brow art,” Meagher said during a recent interview. “I sell most of my art through social media and have my work in Universal Studios in a shop

That is a good way to keep things out of the trash. It is taking an object that has given so much happiness and then to recycle and give that happiness in another form. “I work primarily in vibrant color,” Meagher said. “A lot of times I will have the color palate decided before I start a painting. change people’s opinion in the painting. Many times, a color palate can do that.” Meagher, a native of New Haven, Conn. who lives in Satellite Beach, has been the art curator at the Pizza Gallery and Grill in Viera (part art gallery and part restaurant) at 2250 Town Center Ave. for 17 years. “I choose the art, hang it and am responsible for changing it out and scheduling an art show,” Meagher said. “I also handle their marketing and ad work. more than 70 countries observe this time-honored tradition. Although we participate in this every year, very few know exactly why we change our clocks. Benjamin Franklin’s original idea for daylight saving time was a way to conserve energy by using the extra daylight. In the United States, daylight saving time originally was implemented during World War I and World War II in order to take advantage of longer daylight hours and save energy for the war production. After the wars, some cities chose to observe while others went back to standard time. This caused some confusion, especially when those cities were only a few miles apart. In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act to standardize daylight saving time across the country. There are plenty of myths surrounding daylight saving time, but the most persistent is that the time change benefits farmers. The myth says that the extra daylight allows them to work later in the day. In actuality, farmers tend to not support the time change. Farmers don’t enjoy the loss of the morning daylight hours when they usually do most of their work.
Also, with electronics becoming much more efficient, the original reason of conservation becomes a moot point. So, what are the benefits of extra daylight? Extra daylight means that we can do more with our day.
Go to parks, beaches, and most importantly, shop. Whether it’s clothes or gasoline, Americans spend millions annually with the extra hour of sunlight. This gives a boost to small businesses and the economy in general. VV

Spinning tales about green plants. Green plants, including aquatic species, manufacture their own food: photosynthesis. They utilize the energy of sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose, a simple sugar; oxygen is released as a by-product. Thus, humans and other creatures can eat and breathe. Actually, glucose is the basic material, building block, for other food. Stored plant food might include seeds (peas), fruits (apples), roots (carrots), leaves (spinach), stems (asparagus) or florets (broccoli). Other plant “gifts” are vitamins, minerals, fuel, clothing, shelter, clean air and water by evapo-transpiration which supports rainfall. Even cosmetics, hair dye, rubber gloves, car wax and wine corks are plant “gifts.” Since plants absorb carbon dioxide, they help reduce the effects of global warming: climate change, such as heavy rain, drought and melting icebergs. Obviously, rainforests are vital to the planet. Moreover, they provide remedies for afflictions ranging from headaches to childhood leukemia. Controversial is deforestation of rainforests by harvesting lumber and clearing land for grazing and crops. Subsequently, crops used for biofuels, such as oil palms and sugarcane (also Coca-Cola’s plastic beverage “PlantBottle” is 100 percent sugarcane plant material), might not be as environmentally friendly as claimed. For plant reproduction, the cycle of flower pollination, fertilization and seed formation transpires. Common pollination is by bees, daytime “superstar” pollinators. Bats take the night shift. Wind pollination occurs, for instance, in grain (cereal) crops, grasses, pine and many hardwoods. Occasionally, hand (artificial) pollination is essential as in southwest China where pesticides and loss of habitat have decimated bees. Reproduction also might involve microscopic spores. The fern plant, for example, lacks seeds and flowers. The fronds (leaves) usually display spores underneath, commonly dispersed by wind. Shady, damp growing conditions are common. The fern is among the oldest of land plants, and it is beneficial — the Christmas fern controls erosion, and the fiddlehead fern is a nutritious delicacy. In Florida, plants flourish. The ubiquitous sabal palm, the state tree, also is

recognized as sabal palmetto, cabbage palmetto and a few more labels. It is protected from indiscriminate cutting. Delectable is the raw or cooked heart of the tree, “swamp cabbage,” often cooked by Seminoles over open-fire with frybread or served in Florida Cracker cuisine. However, in the gourmet restaurant, it is savored as “heart of palm.” To adapt to Florida environments, some plants are specialized. Such a plant is the prickly pear which needs little maintenance since it is drought, heat and salt tolerant. Its yellow blooms, pads (nopales), and fruits (prickly pears) are edible. Planted under windows, this prickly “burglar bush” deters intruders. Native Americans applied its pads to open wounds and used the spines (modified leaves) for needles. In Mexico, the pads are fed to cows to flavor milk. Vital to the Florida economy are citrus trees. However, “citrus greening,” a bacterial infection being spread by the tiny insect psyllid, leaves fruit green, bitter, shriveled and unmarketable; eventually, trees die. There are recent advances in developing tougher fruit varieties, such as a small, seedless, easyto-peel mandarin orange. Alternative crops also are being considered — the seed pod of the pongamia tree contains an oil-rich legume. These legumes yield more oil than soybeans. Anticipated by-products are biofuels, lubricants, natural pesticides and feed. Hopefully, delivering antibiotics to plant leaves will cure citrus greening in the future. Undeniably, plants are exquisite, functional, and manage our survival. In turn, we need to manage them — judiciously. to be featured in the 2018 Boomer Guide. The single mother of a 15-year-old boy walks an average of four dogs a day for 30 minutes each in her fun business. Ken and Patty Berchtold, both 59, planned to retire in South Carolina. After spending a winter visiting their son, Jason, who is a golf professional at Bent Pine Golf Club in Vero Beach, they changed their mind. A year later, they bought a house at Heritage Isle in Viera. Daily walks, cycling, kayaking and workouts at the gym have become a way of life for the couple. Florida provides ample opportunities to exercise that Pennsylvania couldn’t match. “We really would just hibernate in the winter,’’ Ken Berchtold said. “It was tough to go to the gym in the bad weather, and we’d end up not going. It’s so nice to go out and ride a bike here. It’s a different lifestyle, and you don’t realize it until you come down.’’ Patty Berchtold, the director of billing for a physical therapy company, still works for the same company she worked for in Erie, Pa. “The technology of today is so fabulous to allow me to work from home,’’ Patty Berchtold said. “I can be on the computer all day, and my husband takes care of the cooking and cleaning.’’

Seniors will show off a variety of talent at the Power of Age Expo BY MUFFY BERLYN
The 2018 Boomer Guide Expo will feature a new show, Seniors Got Talent. The free expo will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 1:15 a.m. at The Avenue Viera in the building next to Office Depot on the south side of Carmike Movie Theater. The theme of the Boomer Guide Expo is the Power of Age. “We usually hire a band and we thought this year we would go in a different direction and highlight our local talent in Brevard,” said Jill Gaines, publisher of Senior Life and the Boomer Guide, which present the expo each year.

Spanish flamenco guitar player Eric Duncan, 76, will perform flamenco music at the expo. “I’m from Aberdeen in Scotland and I was born to a Gypsy family” said Duncan, who has played the guitar since he was 14. Flamenco is an art form of song, dance and music derived from cultural intermingling associated with the Gypsies of southern Spain. Often the flamenco guitarist “complements the flamenco dancer, but can also play solo,” said Duncan who noted the music is “very passionate.” Master puppeteer Howard Gordon, 68, will perform songs with his puppets at the

We have burlesque, singers, dancers and comedy acts. We want to see what’s out there.” Performers can call 321242-1235 to see if there still is room on the schedule for more acts. “It’s not a contest — it’s a performance,” Gaines said. “There's a lot of excitement in the air — the performers are preparing for their time to shine. ” VV

Zendehrouh, Zack Chace and Cameron Shearer qualified for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl. That event is set to take place April 19 to 22 at the University of Colorado Boulder. Viera’s A team finished ninth at the national competition last year after defeating the Viera B team in the finals of the Manatee Bowl. While the B team did not return to the finals of this year’s tournament, the A team steamrolled through to repeat as champions in the event, where students test their ocean science knowledge through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended, team challenge questions. “We definitely had to protect our title,” Hofmann said. As if getting to the nationals again wasn’t motivation enough, members of the team wanted to show that last year’s Manatee Bowl victory was no fluke and that Viera students work hard and were deserving of the title.
“I was on the A team last year as well, and I was on a team with super brilliant people, so I feel like it wasn’t as much of a surprise when we made it to nationals. But it was our first time, so we were all super excited,” Howe said. “This year, I feel like we definitely felt we had something to prove when we went there. … I was really glad when we were able to do it.” Chace, whose older brother, Brennan, was on Viera’s B team last year, said he enjoyed the competition. “It was fun,” he said. “It was more fun than I thought it would be.” The students studied three days a week for the competition and will be working hard again to prepare for the nationals. “I think as far as teamwork goes, and spreading out the talent equally on the team, I think we’re better in that way,” Howe said. “Last year, we had powerhouses. This year, where one person may lack knowledge in one category, another person makes up for that. I think we all really fit well together in that way.” VV
