Brevard County can thank the grand city of Savannah for an event that has quickly become a holiday tradition, the Light Up Viera Holiday Parade, which begins with fireworks at 6 p.m.

“I was in Savannah on my birthday in November and we were getting dressed for dinner when I heard a very loud commotion on River Street,” said Lauri Duda, the vice president of marketing

for the Viera Company who is on the board of the Viera Community Institute, which orchestrates the annual holiday parade for the Viera Company.

Duda checked out what was going on in Savannah and discovered the city was hosting a holiday parade.

“That’s when I said we should have something similar in Viera,” she said.

“We expect anywhere between 15,000 to 20,000 to attend,” said Tonya Evans, marketing and event specialist for the Viera Company.

“Last year, we estimated 18,000 filled the streets for the parade and festivities.”

The sparkle and glow of Christmas comes to life in three of Viera’s most elegant homes this month, and everyone is invited.

The annual Christmas Home Tour is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Nov. 15. It will feature three breathtaking Viera homes decked out with Christmas trees and holiday decorations amid stunning design themes.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to three local charities: Candlelighters of Brevard, Walk on Water and Gabrielle’s Place.

“We have hundreds of people show up every year for our home tours,” said Martha Chambers of Spade and Trowel Garden Club.

“This is a big money maker for these charities. People love attending this tour.”

and Walk on Water receive much-needed donations from the Christmas Home Tour proceeds. Candlelighters of Brevard is an organization that provides support to the families of children with cancer.

Walk on Water, an equine non-profit ministry, is committed to helping special needs children and adults through equine therapy.

Gabrielle’s Place is a center for women and children.

“Walk on Water recently bought property on north Merritt Island,” Chambers said. “They have a pavilion for the kids to do crafts, (enabling them to increase their fine motor skills). And the Candlelighters, they are supporting 70 families right now. They do so much for these families and they need our support.”

alarmingly sharp full-circle turns. In reality, of course, avoiding sharp turns is crucial to safety. Some studies using golf carts and child-size crash dummies suggest that many ejections occur during left turns.

Attendees at the workshop agreed that it was worthwhile.

“This course is as valuable for children as it is for parents,” said parent Mike Stroface. “I think it was great.”

Stroface attended the safety seminar with his daughter Hannah, a ninth grader at Viera High.

Hannah participated in the presentation with the deputy as he reviewed safety measures. Hannah is 14 years old, which makes her eligible to drive a golf cart.

“I wanted her to take this course before we let her drive to Viera High,” Stroface said. The biggest thing I see around here is when (kids) are heading home from school, lots of kids jump on a golf cart.”

The number of people per golf cart limit for a standard cart is four. And the maximum operating speed for golf carts is 20 mph. When operated at speeds surpassing 20 mph, golf carts are considered lowspeed vehicles and the rules change. At speeds of more than 20 mph, drivers must have a license and are not permitted on sidewalks.

“I thought it was very worthwhile,” said Dr. Rita Jain, a parent. “It helped that they used people from the audience for the demonstration. We learned a lot.”

Jain attended the event with her son Sunil, who drives a cart to Viera High each day. At Viera High, there is a specific area for golf-cart drivers to park on campus. High school students must present proof of insurance, photo identification and golf-cart ownership.

“We want to keep our kids safe,” said Rob LaMarr, a Rotary Club member.

“We plan to have quarterly presentations on golfcart safety throughout the community.”

The presentation was a joint effort by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department, local rotary clubs, Golf Carts Unlimited and the Avenues.

Volunteers from the Interact Club of Rockledge High helped during the presentation.

Additional workshops are in the works, including at least one at Viera High.

“I think the message for golf-cart users is just like the message for everybody else who drives.’’ Smith said. “We have to understand there is one transportation system, and we need to respect other users.” VV

Harvest Festival full of fun for everyone

Temperatures in the 80s made it seem more like summer than fall, but the happy children lining up for the Zucchini 500 races were a sure sign that fall had arrived at the sixth annual Viera Voice Harvest Festival at The Avenue Viera.

Scarecrows were lined up against a modified white picket fence in the middle of the parking lot which became an autumnal paradise with a pumpkin patch, hay bales, face painting and business booths boasting scarecrows with humorous links to their various businesses.

Within the white fence adorned with the scarecrows on the outside were the gravestones of those from Halloween past.

The Penny Creek Band, an annual fixture at the Harvest Festival, entertained everyone with their toe-tapping array of bluegrass musical hits.

Scarecrows were auctioned off to help The Children’s Hunger Project. The group helps feed children each weekend through its backpack program.

The SPCA of Brevard also was able to find homes for two cats. No dogs were adopted, but children and adults alike stopped by to give the dogs, who were resting next to hay bales, a pat on the head or a stroke under the chin.

New coach brings new attitude to Holy Trinity swimming

New coach Chris Beadle is trying to make swimming fun again at Holy Trinity.

And by the reactions of her swimmers … it’s working.

“I think we’ve all gotten better because of her helping us more,” eighth-grader Ava Middlebrooks said.

Beadle, who swam during her days at Cocoa High, had a simple answer when asked about her coaching philosophy.

She simply pointed at the pool where her swimmers were practicing.

“It’s all about them,” Beadle said. “It’s all about what’s best for them, getting to know them and finding out in turn what would motivate them. It kind of makes a better communication line available.

They feel more comfortable discussing if something hurts, or if something is bothering them.

“And I point things out during practice as far as technique and efficiency that I think they need to address.”

Sophomore Brandon Assam said Beadle’s approach has helped the Tigers

be more excited about their season and about their upcoming meets as the swimmers prepare for the districts, regionals and possibly even the state meet.

“Coach Beadle is really good,” Assam said. “I really like her. She’s very interactive with us. She helps us work on our technique a lot, what we need to focus on.”

At the district meet, which was held late last month, the Holy Trinity girls were expected to challenge for a top spot with the help of three seniors: Christy Chadwick (50 and 100 freestyle); Annette Wilson (200 and 500 free) and Daniela Spies (100 free and 100 breaststroke).

Holy Trinity’s boys, meanwhile, have a relatively young team.

Eighth-grader Alex Spies is one of the Tigers’ top swimmers in the 500 free and 100 fly. Junior Brandon Lawrence is solid in the 50 and 100 free and eighth-grader Patrick Nguyen should challenge in the 500 free and 200 IM. Assam will look to qualify in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke while juniors Max Pagan (100 fly, 200 IM) and Nikhil Patel (100 back, 200 free) also were expected to be standouts. VV

Viera divers have good shot to reach state meet

There might be a lot of new faces on this year’s Viera High swimming team, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

“It forces the older kids to be more of a mentor and the younger kids have a lot to look up to,” said Viera’s Morgan Woodard, who coaches the Hawks along with her mother, Debbie Tweedie.

And once again, the Hawks are having a good season.

After the boys took second and the girls third at last month’s Cape Coast Conference meet, the Hawks were set to move onto the district meet, which took place Oct. 25 in Sebastian River.

The Viera girls were the favorites to win their fifth consecutive district title while the boys also were considered strong championship contenders.

Divers Sarah Rousseau and Ryan Just are considered the best bets to get out of this month’s regionals and advance to the Class 3A state meet, which is set for Nov. 11 at the Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart.

Rousseau will be going for her third consecutive state

championship, which would be unprecedented in Viera’s athletic history, while Just will look to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish.

The two seniors already have accomplished a rare feat, with each winning the CCC championship for the fourth consecutive year.

“Ryan and Sarah are dedicated and work very hard at their sport,” Viera diving coach Randy Just wrote in an email. “Best of all they are outstanding teammates and great to be around and coach.”

Ryan Just has also proven to be quite a swimmer, too, teaming with Ethan Greek, Bryce Hattrup and Blake Wagner to win the 200 freestyle relay at the CCC meet.

“It was really good,” Hattrup said of the CCC race. “We all had pretty good times. It was a close race.”

Connor Jones also had a big CCC meet, winning the 500 free and finishing second in the 200 free.

Dylan Parris was second in boys diving and teammate Tommy Vassallo was seventh, which is notable in that not only is it his first year diving, but he was learning new dives right up until the meet.

Viera Charter reels in volleyball championship

The Viera Charter School’s middle school girls’ volleyball team won each of its 14 matches this season, including its finale against Holy Trinity Episcopal to win the Space Coast Christian Athletic Association championship.

“This is a very special group of girls,” said Shannon Riley, assistant athletic director of physical education at the school. “They are full of energy and full of personality.

I am so glad I was able to be a part of this season. There is so much talent on our team. Every one of these girls practices with dedication, and their hard work paid off. We ended the season 14-0 and as the SCCAA champions.”

Team members are Anna Brait, Hailey Lewis, Kristen Lee, Kayla Beigh, Taylor Weiss, Avery Nagel, Shyanne Kirschner, Kendall McNenahan, Deanna Marrs, Hailey Hubbard and Bianca Boniello.

They were good last year, and so they were looking for another good year.”

The students practice on an outdoor concrete court.

“We make it work,” Riley said. “We played home games at the Viera Regional Recreation Center, and that is where we had our finals and beat Holy Trinity to win the championship.”

The team practices twice a week for an hour and a half.

It plays two games a week.

Some of the games are on the

weekend.

“As a P.E. teacher, volleyball has always been my passion.

When the principal said they needed a volleyball coach, I said I wanted to do it,” Riley added.

Only three players will return next season since the others will move on to high school. Six girls play on the court at a time. Tryouts are held each year. There were 11 players on the team this season.

“I can’t wait to see where volleyball will take this group in the future.” V V

Thankfully, the Viera East Men’s Golf Association was able to squeeze in a little golf after a few weeks as it played an individual event with four flights.

The team of Simon Cole, Benard Pariot, Bruce Schwanda and Roger Harvie tied the team of Gary Shiffrin, Raj Patel, Sam Speziale and Frank Westwell and the team of Marc Brown, Freddie Baltazar, Larry Henris and Mike Schmitt for first place in a rare three-way tie.

Schwanda on No. 4, Brown on No. 7, Robinson on No. 13 and Schwanda again on No. 16 were closest-to-the-pin.

The Viera East Men’s Golf Association held its annual membership luncheon meeting after the four-man scramble.

New officers were elected, with David Hill named vice president, Schmitt named tournament director, Tim Brown named secretary and Horst tabbed to continue writing about the association. Craig Smith will continue in his role as president.

House system increases Holy Trinity’s school spirit

We’ve got spirit, and our house is … Aqua?

Well, it is for some Holy Trinity students. Under a new house system designed to boost school spirit, students in grades nine to 12 were randomly placed in four different houses — Aqua (Water), Aura (Air), Flamma (Fire) and Terra (Earth) — and will earn points throughout the year based on attending games or special events, along with getting good grades.

The house system was designed by senior Carlo Campanini who thought it would be a good idea to make school spirit a competition.

Each student is given a unique barcode which is scanned by a member of the student government when they attend a game.

Holy Trinity senior Carlo Campanini came up with a house system to help boost school spirit. House members can earn points by attending games and special events and getting good grades.

Campanini then inputs the data into a program he learned while taking an AP computer science class.

Students are identified and matched to their house and that house receives points.

“It’s been going really well,” Campanini said. “A lot of people are coming out

to games. The first football game, we had 110 students come out. That was way more than we’d seen in my time here. “(Even) the faculty’s getting involved and the faculty’s coming to games. I know, playing soccer, it’s always good to look at the sidelines

The idea for the house system came last year when Campanini attended a junior retreat and spoke with seniors about ways to increase school spirit. He talked to his father, who grew up in England where they had house systems. And, of course, he also learned about the house system from reading Harry Potter books.

Before taking his proposal to Nancy Giangrisostomi, the Head of Upper School, Campanini talked to a number of classmates to make sure they approved of his plan. If they didn’t, it wouldn’t work.

Giangrisostomi not only likes the house system, but the fact that it was a student who came up with the idea.

“We are always thrilled when students take the initiative to develop new ideas to improve our school, and the creation of the house system is already proving to

be a great way to keep our high school students, faculty and staff engaged in student life here at Holy Trinity,” she said.

Students also can earn points by getting highest honors or high honors.

The winning house will get to attend an end-of-the-year party for free and have its name engraved on a house cup. Those students will also get out-of-uniform privileges for final exams.

Now that he’s come up with the system, Campanini is thinking of ways to keep it going beyond this year.

“I’m probably the only senior right now who’s really worried about the school after they leave,” he joked “There are a lot of things that need to be done, thinking ahead of how this is going to last.

“It’s great this year, but I don’t want it to be (just) great this year. I want it to be great every year.” VV

Viera Army JROTC Raiders dominate competition

Cheyenne Garvey and nine of her Viera High Army JROTC Raiders teammates had just finished running 1.2 miles with three of them carrying a 30-pound rucksack on their back and the other seven making sure an 80-pound litter found its way across the finish line.

And they did it in just 10 minutes, 35 seconds.

“I love the competition and the adrenaline and my team,” said Garvey, a Viera High senior. “We work really well together when we get under pressure and seeing us do this compared to how we practice is just phenomenal.”

Garvey and her teammates finished nearly eight minutes ahead of their closest competitor in the event, known as the Cross Country Rescue (CCR).

In fact, Viera’s JROTC Raiders team finished first in all five female events at the VHS Raider Challenge — and it wasn’t even close.

Viera’s male team was pretty dominant, too, winning three of the five events and taking second in the other two for a first-place finish.

The mixed team took third place in the event, which included 29 teams from Brevard County and beyond.

Viera’s Raiders teams, under the direction of retired Lt. Col. Timothy Thomas, have a big competition coming up on Nov. 4 at Rockledge High, where they will attempt to qualify for the state championships in December.

It would mark the eighth consecutive trip to the state championship for Viera’s Raiders.

Through the years, a number of Viera High students have talked about how being a member of the school’s JROTC program — and the Raiders, in particular — has had a big impact on their life. This year’s group is no different.

“It’s just a great environment,” junior Joe Altieri said. “You learn a lot about leadership and it gives

you skill you wouldn’t find anywhere else. It gets you to talk in front of your class.

It gets you to obtain a lot of responsibility because out here you can get leadership positions.

“Raiders, it just teaches you another level of physical endurance. It’s so hard. We practice every day. It gets you ready for a future of being in the military.”

Altieri, who moved here from Maryland before his sophomore year, remembered walking into a school orientation, seeing the JROTC table and asking what it was all about.

“They told me all the cool things (they do), they told me about Raiders, and I was just instantly hooked,” he said. “I thought this was where I was going to fit in.”. VV

Viera science research teacher attends national conference

Viera High science research teacher Elizabeth Youngs visited Washington D.C. last month for a national conference she hopes will have some long-term benefits for local students.

“I’m just hoping to bring back knowledge to improve our science research program, not only here at Viera High School, but throughout Brevard County,” she said.

Youngs was one of 200 teachers from throughout the country selected for an all-expenses paid trip to the

nation’s capital to attend the Research Teacher’s Conference organized by the Society for Science and the Public. The event was sponsored by Regeneron.

In addition to attending several one-hour presentations at the conference, which was held Oct. 13 to 15, Youngs was hoping to do a little networking to gain more knowledge she can use once she returns.

“I’m hoping to meet research teachers from all over the United States and get their input on how they run their programs to get

more students involved in our program,” she said.

“My other thing is to see how other areas find mentors, because that’s one of our hard things here.

We get students who want to do biology projects and micro-biology projects, which are out of my realm of knowledge. My degree is in earth and space science.

Trying to find mentors is a very difficult thing.”

There are 21 students taking science research as an elective at Viera High this year, a number Youngs would naturally like to see increase.

Viera students step up to help Puerto Rico

When Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, a number of Viera High students stepped in to help.

Working with teachers Christy Miller and Gabriel Torres, the students began a drive to collect water, toiletries, canned food, batteries, linens, dog food and baby food — among other items — during a twoweek period that ended last month.

“We joined forces and our students really stepped up,” Miller said. “They found the organization to donate

They did all the advertising.

They put the flyers out, made posters and made sure it was pushed out on social media.

“They really did a phenomenal job of getting the word out.”

Torres, a math teacher and the Student Government Association advisor, said he was approached by sophomore Alanis Colon and senior Keyanna Kramer at different times, but on the same day, to see if they could help set up a relief effort.

Unique, creative scarecrows highlight Harvest Festival

While the Penny Creek Band was playing a toe-tapping array of bluegrass musical hits at the sixth annual Viera Voice Harvest Festival, scarecrows were lined up all over the autumnal paradise in

a converted parking lot at The Avenue Viera on Oct. 21.

Princess Poppy, a troll, won the Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll's Popular Vote and the Artistic Vote. She was built by the residents of Autumn House Assisted Living in Viera.

For their effort and creativity, the Autumn House won $500 as the prize for the artistic vote.

Some of the scarecrows were lined up on a white fence with gravestones lurking behind to honor the ghosts of Halloween past.

Other scarecrows sat in front of booths manned by local businesses.

Many of the scarecrows depicted an active sense of humor prevalent in those businesses or a sense of genuine creativity in the wellconstructed scarecrows.

It was all for a good cause as scarecrows were auctioned off to raise funds for The Children’s Hunger Project. The group helps feed children each weekend through its backpack program. All proceeds from the silent auction went to the organization.VV

Names change for two Brevard County hospitals SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Wuesthoff Health System will update its hospital names and branding as part of its ongoing integration into the innovative, patient-centered Steward Health Care System.

Wuesthoff Medical Center in Rockledge will become Rockledge Regional Medical Center and Wuesthoff Medical Center in Melbourne will become Melbourne Regional Medical Center. They became Steward family hospitals

in May 2017.

The new hospital names will reflect the regional expansion of access to the integrated, community based health care model pioneered

Christians, Jews, Muslims come together to share traditions

The Rev. David Jahn of Advent Lutheran Church in Melbourne knows that despite differences, three major religions can come together in a celebration of thanksgiving.

Jahn is a man with a warm and friendly voice who goes by the more informal Pastor Dave.

Jahn, who grew up in Detroit, had an untraditional path for a man in the clergy.

He started out as a musician and a writer before earning an engineering degree.

Playing the bass guitar and singing the lead for Christian rock bands sparked his

transition into the clergy. He studied at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio.

Jahn has been instrumental in organizing the upcoming Thanksgiving week celebration, “United in Thanksgiving: An Interfaith Celebration of Gratitude,” where Christians, Jews and Muslims will come together “to share traditions and to give thanks to God.” During the service, Jahn will represent the Christian faith.

According to Mohammad Samarah, a doctorate and graduate student from the Florida Institute of Technology and an organizer of the event, several leaders from the local Muslim

community, including The Islamic Society of Brevard, will be present.

Dr. Muzaffar Shaikh, an active member of the Muslim community and head of the Engineering Systems program at Florida Tech, will lead the Muslim portion of the celebration.

“These types of gatherings are great in developing a mutual understanding of all faiths,’’ Shaikh said.

Hit singer McGovern will perform in Christmas concert SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Broadway star Maureen McGovern will perform her “Home for the Holidays” Christmas concert at 3 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 3 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy’s Scott Center for Performing Arts.

The performance is part of the seventh annual Homeless Heart Christmas Tour of Central Florida, which helps homeless families in Brevard County.

McGovern’s performance at the Scott Center will be her only stop in Brevard County during the threeconcert series.

Five years after their last appearance, dinosaurs will return to the Brevard Zoo for a primeval family experience called Dinosaurs Are Back!

Susin pushes for middle school in Viera, rejects rezoning plan

The Brevard Public School District’s plan to rezone schools in the Viera/Suntree area has sparked concerns among residents and School Board member Matt Susin.

He planned to oppose the plan at the Oct. 24 school board meeting and push for building a middle school in Viera, which he says will alleviate overcrowding at elementary schools districtwide.

That’s because the District 4 representative’s plan would also include moving sixth grade from the elementary schools to the middle school level countywide.

“We are only one of two districts — out of 67 in the state of Florida — that have sixth grade in elementary school,” Susin said. “We have an abundance of kids in our elementary schools.

“If we take sixth grade and move it to the middle schools, all of a sudden, every school that we have that’s under capacity comes up to capacity in middle school.

And all of a sudden our elementary schools that are bursting at the seams will go

back to normal capacity.”

Susin cited Titusville as an example, where Oak Park Elementary School is “bursting at the seams” while Madison Middle School and Jackson Middle School are under capacity.

He also referred to DeLaura Middle School, which could benefit from the addition of beachside students, while also eliminating a costly busing situation.

There currently are nine buses taking students from Viera to DeLaura at a cost of $55,000 per bus and $3.10 a mile. Students are bused approximately 45,000 miles each school year, or nearly twice the circumference of the earth.

The estimate for the cost of a new school would be $32 million, with $22 million already available from impact fees. Susin said there is $50 million in the

annual contingency budget — usually reserved for rainy day emergencies — plus a surplus in the district’s health care and food surplus accounts.

“It’s there,” he said of the money to build a middle school. “It’s a matter of tightening up our belt and being able to possibly go into the reserves to build it.

“At no time will we go into debt to build the school. We can build the school without debt.”

On the subject of rezoning, Susin is opposed to moving 165 students in the Springs of Suntree and San Marino developments from Quest, an “A” school, to Ralph Williams, a “B” school. He referred to seven university studies he found that show property values drop when schools are rezoned from high performing schools to less performing schools.

Susin also worried about the potential social and emotional impact of having students switch schools.

“It’s certainly something that really causes unbelievable amounts of discouragement and concern with the parents,” Meikle said. “It’s a bit of a slap in the face for all the work that these parents do to go to

specific schools, regardless the reason.

“At the end of the day, they chose that location. The school district, I believe the right approach is to honor that, and then work with the parents to help find a way forward to either change the constraints or work together to … find another solution.”

Red Beans & Rice brings swing jazz to Rockledge Country Club SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Shannon “Chief” Cherry and his Red Beans & Rice swing jazz band will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Rockledge Country Club.

Cherry started his band in 1997 with some fellow college classmates from Brevard Community College’s Cocoa campus in Marion Scott’s band room. Although the band members have changed through the years, swinging music has been a consistent theme for the group.

Cherry started the band during the neo-swing revival of the late 1990s to play gigs specifically for dancers during the short-lived swing dance craze. This pursuit

later would foster a deeper love and appreciation for more kinds of jazz as the band branched out to perform other types of jazz from the eras between 1920 and 1960. Today, Cherry writes classic swing-inspired original music with a credit to Harry Connick Jr. Band members include Mark Sunderland on trumpet, Major Bailey and Corey Powell on trombones, Joe Goldberg on clarinet and saxes (when he’s in town from New Orleans), Mike Telesmanick and Marce Talos on the piano, Ron Pirtle on bass and Ritchie Mola and Brock Wollard on drums.

Recognition comes with a price At the meeting of the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners on Oct. 10, I was presented with a resolution for volunteer work and contributions within the county in the area of recycling, environmental education and care for the environment.

I would like to thank all Commissioners for passing the resolution and Commissioner Curt Smith, in particular, for presenting me with the resolution and for his leadership in regards to preserving and protecting the environment in general and the Indian River Lagoon specifically.

The accomplishments listed in the resolution were only possible because of the support of my family and so many dear friends who have volunteer with me or have partnered with Recycle Brevard or somehow helped with our initiatives.

Those individuals are not only fundamental to getting projects done; they are the inspiration to get new projects on the to-do list.

As any recognition, this one also comes with a price. The price is the responsibility of doing more in and for our community in the area we are focused on: reducing waste and promoting sustainable living

What does that mean in practical terms?

That means continuing to work on reducing plastic pollution, primarily focusing on polystyrene containers and single-use plastic straws; strengthening current partnerships and making new ones; expanding our educational program to offer it to more schools and assist teachers and schools in incorporating sustainable practices in the classrooms and the school environment; further investing in recycling alternatives to make recycling even more appealing, especially to businesses; building up the reuse habit to extend the life of materials that would otherwise end up in the landfills.

“It is our year to host,” said Jahn, explaining the churches take turns hosting a SVAAC service around Thanksgiving every year.

After Advent Lutheran Church decided on the interfaith service, SVAAC, according to Jahn, was open to “making it interfaith.”

“There is a level of anxiety that is unprecedented, a level of division, of losing friends because of divisiveness and disagreement,” Jahn said. “When I mention this (interfaith celebration), the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Hickman and Samarah were very positive about it.

“In all the major Abrahamic faiths, Christianity, Judaism and Islamic, the vast majority of what we teach — how people ought to treat each other — those things are very similar. The place where we disagree is on what we cannot really know — the nature of God, the character of God — we diverge in terms of our teaching. For those of us who are comfortable with the fact that, compared with the vastness of the universe, we don’t know anything, and for those who are comfortable accepting the idea that there might be other ways of looking at things, this service will be affirming and not threatening.”

Jahn hopes that the event can expand to include other faiths and become an annual celebration. It likely would have included other faiths this year if there had been more time to organize the celebration. The service is open to people of all faiths. VV

René Hulsker has a light in his eyes that starts to dance when you ask him about music. He began playing the cornet, a small trumpet, at age 8 and has never stopped.

After a career in human resource management, Hulsker now conducts the New Horizons Band in Melbourne. He and scores of other adults like him have joined the band, a 50-plus musical group that is part of the New Horizons International Musical Association.

It’s unlikely to find a more enthusiastic and patriotic band for Veterans Day festivities than the New Horizons Band of Melbourne. It will present a musical salute to “The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave” at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12 at Suntree United Methodist Church.

At least 40 musicians, depending on the number of winter residents who will be present, will perform. Many,

New Horizons Band of Melbourne was started in Brevard County in 2003 and is a community band. Not all are retirees. The band includes a family of five. The children are home schooled and New Horizons serves as their music class during Tuesday morning

rehearsals. Referring to all his band members, Hulsker says, “They are really talented.”

The November concert will last for 2 hours with a half-hour intermission.

“The audience can expect 1½ hours of music that is relaxing and inspiring and (they) will experience the (band’s) joy,” Hulsker said.

Military and marching pieces will include the “Armed Forces Salute” and John Philip Sousa’s “Liberty Bell March.” Touching tunes like the recently written 9/11 tribute, “Our American Heroes,” and a version of “Amazing Grace” arranged

by Hulsker. Additionally, Melbourne’s Swingtimers Vocal Trio will provide voice accompaniment for “Amazing Grace” and “Hymn to the Fallen.”

The church is located at 7400 N. Wickham Road in Melbourne and the concert is free of charge.

The 600-seat venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users and there is plenty of parking.

Viera Del Mar conducts modified groundbreaking ceremony SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Rainy weather and muddy grounds did not dampen the enthusiasm as the groundbreaking ceremony for the Viera Del Mar Health and Rehabilitation Center was moved Oct. 5 to the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce Viera office.

The facility which plans to open in the fall of 2018 will be located 2355 Vidina Drive in Viera, directly behind the emergency room of Viera Hospital. It will have a large gym, courtyard, restaurant-style dining and its own movie theater.

Gulf Coast Health Care of Pensacola is the parent company of the Viera Del Mar Health and Rehabilitation Center, an in-patient skilled nursing and rehabilitation center that will have 131 beds, including 78 private rooms. The remaining rooms would be semi-private.

“We have over the past 20-plus years provided leading quality inside of our business and the industry,’’ said Jamey Richardson, the CEO and president of Gulf Coast Health Care of Pensacola, who traveled to Brevard County for the event.

“We recognize and try to stay ahead of the curve for what the demands are for the future.’’

The facility will focus on skilled nursing care, including nutrition management and infectious disease management along with cardiac and surgical rehabilitation. It also will offer physical, occupational and speech therapy. Patients also can receive wound care and respiratory therapy.

“It will only serve to enrich the quality of life here further,’’ said Todd Pokrywa, the senior vice president of land use planning and development for The Viera Company. VV

The Pizza Gallery & Grill Christmas Fit-Mas 3K will be held for the second consecutive year at 6 p.m. Dec. 9.

All registered runners will step off at 6 p.m. Dec. 9 for the second annual Pizza Gallery & Grill Christmas Fit-Mas 3K run in Viera.

The event will be held at the Viera Regional Park at 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way in Melbourne under the direction of Running Zone on Wickham Road in Melbourne.

Each registered runner will receive a moisture wicking race T-shirt, a holiday race packet, an invitation to the Winter Wonderland Party after the event and will be given a chance to win contests, giveaways and prizes.

“Top racers in each category will receive a medal,” said Ericka Hash, chair of the event for Pizza Gallery. “Categories are adult, children age 12 and under and the free Little Elf Run for small kids. The cost is $25 per adult, $15 each for children.”

The running route will be through the tunnels at Viera High School, running by the courthouse and back around the regional park, Hash said.

Sponsors this year are the Running Zone, which is taking care of registration; Health First and the Viera Company. The Winter Wonderland After Party is

sponsored by the Brevard County Parks and Recreation and Cheerio Gram children’s entertainment company which supplies balloon artists, bounce houses and does face painting for children. Food at the party will be Pizza Gallery pizzas galore, Christmas cookies and soft drinks.

Pizza Gallery & Grill owner Chris Conneen “is really big on giving back to the community,” Hash said. “So this race has been geared toward raising funds for Suntree, Viera and Rockledge youth athletics. We had 300 runners last year and hope to have 1,000 this year.”

Pizza Gallery and Grill is a Viera-based locally owned and operated gourmet pizza restaurant and art gallery founded in 1989.

The mission is to enrich the community and provide an incredible dining experience by offering gourmet pizzas and dishes including glutenfree and vegetarian options complemented by displayed local art.
