A bevy of good-looking scarecrows will help feed the 1,600 hungry kids of the Children’s Hunger Project, the chosen charity for this year’s Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll and Harvest Festival scheduled for Oct. 4 to 18. The map and ballot in this issue of Viera Voice will lead participants in the stroll through the community to view the 36 scarecrows created for the event. Vote for your favorite ‘crow and you will be entered in a prize drawing. The scarecrows will be up for auction at the Harvest Festival, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21 at The Avenue Viera. Volunteers from the Children’s Hunger Project are creating their own scarecrow, or rather, scarecrows. “It will be a happy volunteer surrounded by scarecrow kids with a backdrop of a school,” said Children’s Hunger Project office manager Cynthia Thompson. “It represents the hundreds of volunteers who get backpacks of food for kids to take home every weekend.” The grassroots organization was launched six years ago to feed Brevard children at risk of malnutrition during the

weekend. Brevard County Schools provide a free breakfast plus a healthy lunch through the program during the week for children from impoverished families. However, for some students, lunch on Friday is the last regular meal they will receive until the following Monday. The Children's Hunger Project bridges that “hunger gap” with weekend meals delivered in backpacks the kids take home on Friday. Childhood hunger, which can lead to a weaker immune system, difficulty in learning, paying attention in class and behaving properly to retain what they learn, is a serious issue in Brevard. As many as 50 percent of children are part of the free or reduced-price meal program. This is a key indicator of hunger risk and

poverty in a geographic area. In its first year, the Children’s Hunger Project fed 40 children a week. It current feeds 1,600 weekly at 39 schools in Brevard County. Volunteers make it happen. “My volunteer list is over 900,” Thompson said. Every Thursday, volunteers meet to assemble meals at the nonprofit’s Cocoa headquarters. Volunteers then deliver the meals to each of the schools. Food is purchased with donations from individuals, businesses and foundations. ‘Gracie & Lacy’ bring Gatsby Era back to life in Brevard County BY MARIA SONNENBERG

When they were children, Emily “Gracie” Miller and her sister, Lacy, were fortunate to witness musical performances on the old Goldenrod showboat in St. Charles, Mo. It was love at first sight and sound. The siblings returned to St. Louis determined to replicate the wonderful show they had experienced. “We rented as many old movies as we could and learned all the songs, and we got bedsheets to use as curtains on our garage door and we put on a show on the driveway,” Gracie Miller said. “We called it “Broadway on the Driveway." It was so successful that the mayor eventually encouraged us to get off the driveway because so many people were stopping and disrupting traffic.” The girls shifted venues to arts centers and assembled a full orchestra and cast of as many as 90 young performers, until more and more requests started pouring in for their sister act.

Twenty years ago, they went full time with “Gracie and Lacy,” which offers a variety of family-friendly themed shows that pay homage to the good old days. From their home base in Charleston, S.C., the duo travel up and down the East Coast to delight audiences with their tight harmony, retro costumes, tap dancing and the immortal music of the Great American Songbook. Gracie and Lacy will headline Bluewater Creative Group’s free Boomer Bash and Senior Expo and Veterans’ Salute, bringing their “Gloriously Gatsby” show to the event which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Valiant Air Command Warbird museum in Titusville. With costumes designed by Lacy and choreography by Gracie, the show glitters with the glamour of the Jazz

Era. In a nod to vaudeville, “Gloriously Gatsby” includes plenty of singing, dancing and comedy routines. Transformed into Jazz Babies, Gracie and Lacy will sing smooth-asbutter harmonies of Victrola day hits such as “Baby Face” and dance to classics such as the Charleston. “Sometimes, we even teach the audience the Charleston, and we get into sing-alongs with the audience,” Lacy Miller said. Pink Game always a special night for various volleyball teams at Viera, Holy Trinity BY CARL KOTALA

Of all the games on the Viera High volleyball schedule, this one is always special. That’s because it’s about much more than the action on the court. The Hawks will host Holy Trinity on Oct. 5 in the 11th annual Pink Game, where proceeds will benefit the SideOut Foundation, a national organization that raises money for breast cancer research. In addition to what should be an entertaining game, there will be plenty of crowdfriendly moments, along with the chance to purchase T-shirts and raffle tickets to win one of 12 gift baskets. The game has raised more than $10,000 in the first 10 years. “It’s a special time,” Viera senior Ali McLoughlin said. “All the people who have breast cancer come out, so we get to honor them. My grandma came out a couple of years ago. It was cool to see her there, just to let her know that people are trying to work toward breast cancer awareness and towards a cure.” The action will start at 5:15 p.m. when the Viera freshmen

will face Holy Trinity’s Middle School team. The junior varsity game is set to follow at 6:15 with the two varsity teams scheduled to take the court at 7:15. “This will be the third year that Holy Trinity has teamed with Viera for a Dig Pink game,” Holy Trinity coach Pete Klonowski wrote in an email. “The Dig Pink match is being part of a bigger picture than just volleyball — it’s a way of educating our youth about breast cancer and engaging in a philanthropic event.” The game has a special meaning for Viera High coach Sarah Wayne, who lost her aunt to breast cancer in 2013. “We will have lots of prizes to give away during and after the varsity match,” Wayne wrote in an email. “The girls look forward to the match every year and it means so much to the Viera community. There is tremendous support with the schools, administration and the crowd turnout is always spectacular. “It's a continuing tradition that's more important to me as a coach than wins or losses.” VV

VEMA and the club are excited about Schmitt’s new site and hard work. VEMA was able to play a three-man scramble before

Suntree CC to host second annual Devereux Tennis Challenge BY CARL KOTALA

It was a big hit with local tennis players last year. And now it’s back. The second annual Devereux Tennis Challenge will take place Friday, Nov. 3 to Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Suntree Country Club. Sponsored by the Bluewater Foundation, proceeds from the tournament will benefit Devereux, which offers a professional therapeutic environment for children and adolescents facing significant emotional, behavioral and intellectual/developmental challenges. The tournament is targeted for players aged 25 to 75 and will feature men’s, women’s and mixed doubles events. Play will begin at 6 p.m. Friday and resume from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Suntree Head Tennis Professional Paul Davis will help organize the draw for the tournament so that players of similar skill levels will be grouped together. Last year’s event featured a Platinum, Gold and Silver level. The cost for the tournament is $50 per person and $20 to enter a second division (use the promotional code “Deuce”). For many, October signifies a change in season. Pumpkin patches fill with gourds of all shapes and sizes. Temperatures take a slight dip along the Space Coast, and the humidity decreases slightly, as well. Although autumn colors are at the forefront of décor in October, a more vibrant hue is worn by some of Brevard’s bravest. Brevard County Fire Rescue is currently accepting orders for its inaugural “Real Men Wear Pink’’ barbecue. The final date to submit an order is Wednesday, Oct. 4. Thomas Neidert, who is the District Chief for District No. 45C, said that on Friday, Oct. 6, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs will deliver the food orders to businesses. Those who place orders with Neidert can choose from brisket, pork butt, ribs and jackfruit — a vegetarian option.

“Say your business wanted to buy lunch one day,” Neidert said. “Your whole company would buy lunch from me, and we would deliver the free ordered lunch.” Once an order is placed, a time for delivery will be provided. In its first year, BCFR officials said that its fundraising goal for its “Real Men Wear Pink” barbecue is $5,000. The funds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Neidert is no stranger to the devastating impacts that cancer can have on society. “Both of my parents died from cancer, and my grandmother died from breast cancer,” he said. “Every October, people get involved in breast cancer awareness, and we want to inspire more people to get involved and do their part.” The 25-year BCFR veteran said that his experience with cancer has inspired him to become more active in the

community to help find a cure. “I do a lot of charity events, like St. Baldrick’s in March for pediatric cancer,” Neidert said. “[County] Commissioner Curt Smith tasked me to be the ambassador for ‘Real Men Wear Pink,’ so I thought a barbecue would be a great way to help fundraise.” Come Friday, Oct. 6, dozens of off-duty BCFR members will help Neidert make deliveries to area businesses, dressed in their “Real Men Wear Pink” shirts. “Cancer is a big part of our lives, and I’m doing everything in my power to get people involved to help find a cure,” Neidert said. “Cancer will impact everyone — whether it was in the past, happening currently or will take place in the future.” To place an order, contact Neidert at 321-604-2888 or email TNDART47@yahoo. com. There are claims that right here in our backyard there are many interesting homes, hotels, and historic places that are haunted. Investigating these claims here is my humble, and pedestrian clarification on why they have gained this vaulted status. Rumors are that a very jealous rival suitor in a fit of rage murdered Allen. The Mini-Crow division in the Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll and Harvest Festival has been a huge hit for the past couple of years. This year, it promises to provide even more creative entertainment. Children who wish to build a scarecrow of their own and bring it at the start of the festival can win cash prizes in gift certificates. There is no entry fee for the two age groups — 6 to 9 years old

and 10 to 15 years old. The first-place winner in each age group will earn $40. The second-place winner will take home $20. While traditional ’crows will be posted across the greater Viera/Suntree area from Oct. 4 through 18 and moved to the Harvest Festival, the Mini-Crows will be on display only from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Saturday, Oct. 21 event held at The Avenue Viera. Unlike the traditional scarecrows in the event,

the Mini-Crows will not be auctioned for charity but remain the child's property. The Mini-Crow division was created to give children a chance to participate, Viera Voice publisher Jill Blue Gaines said. Many of the children who took part are hard at work on this year's entries. Brevard Zoo has named Tracy Steele its new manager of individual giving. During her career, Steele has worked in development, marketing and public relations. She worked at Health First for 15 years as part of its marketing communications team and most recently served as the development and communications director at Melbourne Central Catholic High School. Previously, she was president of the Space Coast Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association and a board member of the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. “I’m honored to join the Zoo, an organization I see as a leader in conservation, animal wellness and education,’’ Steele said. “I’ve lived in Brevard County for many years and can’t wait to connect with the community to support an institution that has enriched the lives of so many.’’

Plans are underway for the 21st annual ArtWorks of Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival with the return of approximately 80 professional artists selected for this November presentation. The Melbourne Hotel, Melbourne Now called The 1900 Building is on the corner of New Haven and U. S. 1. This building was built in 1924 and opened as the elegant Melbourne Hotel. It had more than 100 sleeping rooms a fine restaurant and bar, a telegraph office, and faced Melbourne’s first traffic light. The building was converted to offices in the late 1980’s. There are many versions of stories of ghosts haunting this building and that they only come out at night. The version that I love is the “White Sheets and Pillow Case” story. It seems that in the “Flapper Age” of the 1920s Hotel management decided to keep up with the times and changed all the bed linen to Flapper Red, White and Blue colors. Bedding now was made of Linen, Silk, Rayon and who knows what else. Well long time resident of the Hotel Timothy E. McGuire, a traditionalist, a leading citizen, and a Melbourne mover and shaker was more than irate. He demanded that the Hotel return to cotton

and traditional white for everything including the towels. Management said no. Timothy replied “You’ll regret this move I will haunt this flapper Hotel forever.” Today the 1900 building has only paper towels in all rest rooms to satisfy Mr. McGuire. The Strawberry Mansion, Melbourne The Strawberry Mansion, now called the Mansion, 1218 East New Haven, Melbourne. This magnificent Queen Anne wood building was built in the very early 1900’s. The Lee family from Albion New York built the house. The Lee’s adopted daughter Nannie Lee then inherited the house in 1929. The House was called then The Nannie Lee House and then when converted to a restaurant in 1981 The Strawberry Mansion. Legend has it that this home is now haunted by the mother of a tipsy and disgruntled diner over the quality of a dessert. It seems the George P. Harrington a regular diner at the Strawberry Mansion wanted to try their famous Strawberry Short Cake. After a few bits George asked for the owner and complained vehemently that the Strawberry Short Cake was nothing like his dear mother makes at home. The owner, backed by the Maître D, responded. “ Well that’s why your mother doesn’t work here.” George in tears, “I’m

going to tell my sweet mother and she will forever haunt this building” Today in the Mansion’s kitchen ceiling resides George’s mother Rebecca viewing and inspecting every dessert that is made from scratch by the Bakers. They have an award winning selection, everything but Strawberry Short Cake. Why take any chances! The Compound, Palm Bay Called the Compound today by the locals it is a large area of over 200 miles of abandoned streets. Back in the 1980s the General Development Corporation who developed the compound with streets and a sewer system intended this area to be a lavish housing development. The Company went bankrupt in the early 1990’s. Today the Compound is used by the locals for drag racing, dirt biking, four wheeling, paint ball, and other outdoor activities. It got its reputation as a haunted area because there have been many children and adults who entered the compound and never were seen again. Why have they not returned? Well my investigation has found that the children may have been runaways and the adults beaten down unhappy spouses. You ask where did they go? They went to the Cumberland Gap, Gateway to the West. Trust science when it comes to hurricanes, eclipses, climate change Hurricane Irma was a threat. We heard that from the weather forecast. Preparation was under way. We kept watching the forecast to see how much of a hit we were going to get. We knew the eye of the storm had shifted west, but we still were looking at a Category 4 hurricane arriving in Florida. Decisions had to be made on how best to stay safe and protect property. In the early days, when there wasn’t access to this kind of information or tracking data, hurricanes would crash land without warning and people would get hit with no chance to prepare for what was coming. Even though the weather has always been important for its impact in lives and businesses, it was just in the 1800s that scientists started to seriously study the atmosphere. Once telegraphs made sharing timely weather observations from distant locations possible,

weather forecasting became a reality. In 1870, Congress created a national weather service in the U.S. Army Signal Service’s Division of Telegrams and Reports for the Benefit of Commerce. But, it was not until 1898 that a hurricane warning network was established. We have to thank science for the innovations and the government for applying science to our protection and to broaden our ability to understand the world. Recently, thanks to science, we were able to safely experience a total solar eclipse because we knew the eclipse path. We trusted the information shared and relied on science to pick the best spot to experience

totality. Whether one was prepared for it or not, the eclipse happened at the date, times and locations (timeanddate.com) as predicted by scientists. Science has brought about awareness and knowledge of many things to help us in our daily lives, our preservation and advancement. Climate change is the latest development. As in any pressing issue, scientists see the urgency in acting on climate change. Astronomer Phil Plait wrote recently: “Climate change due to global warming is one of the greatest threats facing us as a species.” Neil deGrasse Tyson, scientist and astrophysicist, is concerned that “climate change had become so severe that the country might not be able to recover. […] What will it take for people to recognize that a community of scientists are learning objective truths about the natural world and that you can benefit from knowing about it?” he added.

Businesses recognize it and are taking action. In one of its latest reports, the World Economic Forum announced that “chocolate giant Mars, has pledged $1 billion to fight climate change.” Mars recognizes that inaction can be costly for their business. Its chief sustainability officer says that “it's time for companies to accelerate their game and work together, and work together with governments and civil society. This is a world issue, and it requires all actors to work together." Businesses are listening, but why aren’t we all? According to Reuters, “68 percent of Americans want the United States to lead global efforts to slow climate change, and 72 percent agree ‘that given the amount of greenhouse gases that it produces, the United States should take aggressive action to slow global warming.’” Just a few days ago “the Senate Appropriations Committee approved an

amendment providing funding for the U.N.'s Framework Convention on Climate Change in a spending bill for the State Department” (Washington Examiner), so it seems that the Senate is in line with the majority of Americans and is trying to allocate resources to address climate change. Unfortunately, “the House's version of the State Department funding bill does not contain money for the U.N. climate agency, so the two chambers will have to reconcile the differences in the final legislation.” Solid science tells us that anthropogenic global climate change, like hurricanes and eclipses, is occurring whether we believe it or not. Delaying action will not prevent the consequences of climate change from affecting us; it will merely give us less time and fewer options to work with. Space Coast Wine Guild appreciates a fine glass of wine BY MUFFY BERLYN

Before leaving Virginia as a postal worker for a move to Florida, Mark Stephens, 59, had read about the health benefits of elderberry wine and started looking for some. Early in 2006 after moving to Brevard County, Stephens read a story about the Space Coast Wine Guild and how members make wine and enter their wine in contests. One member of the guild won a gold medal for elderberry wine. Stephens saved the article because he wanted to buy some elderberry wine from her. When he called Betty Nettles, the co-founder of the club, she recruited him to join the guild. Later, he met the woman in the club who made the elderberry wine and asked to buy some. She said, “we share them and give them away,” and so she gave him some of the wine. Later, he invited Betty and Donnie Nettles over for grilled steaks. Donnie looked around Stephens’ back yard and said, “you know, you’ve got elderberry growing here.” Stephens has since made his own elderberry wine, as well as mango wine, grapefruit wine, star fruit wine and lime wine as a member of the Space Coast

and make their own at home with fruit like the Stephens often do. “A lot of members are excellent wine makers. However, I don’t make wine. I enjoy wine,” explained Art Zyskowski, the club’s vice president. “The club is for people interested in wine, whether making it or simply enjoying it. Members brings wine, some homemade, some commercial, and appetizers, when the club meets socially to enjoy a small meal. “We have different topics every month.’’ Zyskowski said. “In January, we had a blind tasting for red wine. Basically, the board members brought in red wine, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, crazy reds varietals, mixes. We kind of hide the bottle and we each have tastings and try to guess the particular varietal, whether it’s a merlot, etc. It’s difficult to tell when not looking at the bottle.” The club members enjoy

Wine Guild. He likes to give away his wine for holidays and birthdays, designing and printing his own labels from his computer with birthday wishes and the recipient’s name on it. Betty and Donnie Nettles incorporated the Space Coast Wine Guild in 2002 and recently celebrated its 15th anniversary. The couple had started making wine in Ohio as members of a northern Ohio wine guild with concord grapes. They were members for six years in Ohio before moving to Brevard County, where Donnie Nettles wished there was a wine club. They soon started one.

“It used to be we were trying to encourage winemaking,” Betty Nettles said. “Through the years, we noticed people wanted to join who didn’t want to make wine, but wanted to come and learn about wines. So now we have some who make wines, and some who don’t.” Any of the 50 members can buy wine kits for $150,

The club hosts activities such as the annual picnic in April, the Christmas party and charter boat trips as well as competing in the South Florida Fair. “A lot of members compete for medals,’’ Zyskowski said. “The biggest competition is the South Florida Fair, where Donnie and Betty (Nettles), and Mark and Sue (Stephens) have won a number of gold medals at the fair. Their wines are excellent. Plumage coloration helps reproduction, survival Spinning tales about bird plumage. Seemingly, some birds glow in colors of the rainbow. Others are adorned in duller dominant browns and grays. Actually, plumage coloration promotes reproduction and survival. Plumage is replaced by molting, according to the juvenile stage, wear or season. Almost all birds molt at least once or twice or three times annually. Actually, all birds display basic plumage. In some species, this definitive plumage remains. For example, some birds living on or near the ground are disguised in inconspicuous feathers. In other pairs, both might be colorful when the female is concealed in tree hollows for nesting. With many birds, during the spring or summer mating season, a male might attract a mate by molting from basic non-breeding plumage to vibrant alternate (nuptial) breeding plumage. This brilliant ornamentation also flaunts vitality to a prospective mate. The female’s nondemonstrative plumage offers protection when incubating in a vulnerable tree nest. Is the bluebird really blue? In fact, the visual blue results from the way the particular structure of the feather interacts with light-structural color. Therefore, blue light is refracted. Yet, when the feather is backlighted, brown from melanin pigmentation is obvious. (Fortunately, for birds that are blue, some predators do not see blue.) Is the cardinal really red? Yes! The red is created by pigments in its food such as seeds and red dogwood berries, which are a favorite. If its feathers were ground, the powder would remain red. A rarer form of mutation can render the cardinal yellow. Research proposes that some male and female birds are evolving into similar plumage. However, the following male songbirds are beguiling in bright plumage — outshining their mates! The painted bunting male

of the cardinal family is called nonpareil (without equal) with its unique blue head and red, green and yellow body. The female has greenish camouflage. Unfortunately, the male often is captured in Central America and sold as a cage bird. This species spends winters in southern Florida. The indigo bunting male of the cardinal family displays vivid blue, sometimes with just the head colored indigo — a scrap of sky with wings. It also is identified as the blue canary with its bouncy song. The female is brown. Migration often occurs at night with guidance from the stars. In captivity, this bird is disoriented at migration time since it is unable to see the stars. This species breeds in the summer in most of Florida. The eastern bluebird male of the thrush family exhibits a vibrant blue back, a rust throat and breast and white belly. The female is muted. The bluebird is symbolic of happiness. Too weak to excavate, it uses abandoned nests (a secondary cavity nester) and birdhouses. This species remains in Florida throughout the year, except in the southern part. The scarlet tanager male of the cardinal family is aflame in red, accentuated with black wings and tail. The female is camouflaged green above and yellow below. From high in the forest canopy to avoid predators, the male’s distinct song sounds like a robin with a sore throat. This species migrates through Florida. To witness a bedecked male, one needs to undertake a nature walk in breeding locations (check online). Abbey is a 9-year-old dachshund, who I rescued when she was 3 years old. Abbey will carry the rings down the aisle when my fiance Josh and I get married this month. Viera Del Mar facility prepared to open in fall 2018

With a large gym, courtyard, restaurant-style dining and its own movie theater, the Viera Del Mar Health and Rehabilitation Center promises to provide more than just quality care for its patients when it opens in the fall of 2018. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Oct. 5 at the facility, which will be located at 2355 Vidina Drive in Viera, directly behind the emergency room of Viera Hospital. Gulf Coast Health Care of Pensacola is the parent company of the Viera Del Mar Health and Rehabilitation Center, an inpatient skilled nursing and rehabilitation center that will have 131 beds, including 78 private rooms. development for Gulf Coast Health Care, said the facility will focus on skilled nursing care including nutrition management and infectious disease management along with cardiac and surgical rehabilitation. Furthermore, the center will offer physical, occupational and speech therapy. Patients

can also receive wound care and respiratory therapy. “We’re the bridge between someone being hospitalized and returning home,” Trueba said. Though an exact date has not been set for the opening, Trueba said the plan is for the facility to start taking patients within 14 months after breaking ground. The Oct. 5

Horses and humans can share a special bond, according to Florida Tech doctoral psychology student Caroline Witek.

Witek, who is in her third year in Florida Tech’s doctoral program in psychology, helps clients discover themselves through the “Eye of a Horse.” The unique equine-assisted psychotherapy program was created by Dr. Sandra Wise, a 1995 graduate of Florida Tech’s School of Psychology. “Eye of a Horse” serves as a practicum site for students such as Witek. “The horse becomes the metaphor in the program, which is based on experiential therapy,” Witek said. “It is therapy by doing, which is different from traditional thought therapies.” “Eye of a Horse” is based out of Forever Florida, the 4,700-acre conservation ranch and wildlife sanctuary that Brevard ophthalmologist Dr. William Broussard and his wife, Margaret, created in memory of their late son, Allen. Clients include young adults on the autism spectrum, veterans with PTSD, substance abuse groups and teens who are runaways or have been abused. “We alter activities based on the group,” Witek said. One thing never changes among the groups. The horses are never ridden. Clients often head out into the wide-open fields of Forever Florida, where they begin building trust with the wild horses. They also might interact with the animals in corrals and the training ring. The horses’ response to the clients forms part of the program, opening the door for additional conversation. Witek often guides clients to see the pregnant mares and the colts on the property. Some visit The Boneyard, which is the peaceful field in Forever Florida that is the last resting place for many of the cattle and horses that have died on the property.

“Some clients think it is creepy,’’ Witek said. “Others use it as an opportunity to discuss the cycle of life and death.’’ Horses have long been used in the therapeutic programs for individuals with physical disabilities, but the noble animals can be just as valuable in psychotherapy. Because they are prey animals, they are extremely sensitive to their surroundings. They respect and trust you, if you give them have a chance. Horses never hide their emotions and, in their response to humans, people can learn a lot about themselves and their relationships with others. “You need to experience it for yourself,” Witek said. SPCA conducts dramatic pet rescue during aftermath of Hurricane BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER

As Hurricane Irma flood waters rose to a foot inside a home on Ranch Road in Cocoa on Sept. 12, eight boxer and boxer-pug mix dogs and nine cats, all wet, shaken and traumatized were rescued by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after an urgent plea for help. The pet owners lost everything, but they were determined to help get their animals to safety. “This was hip-deep water and, even with the jackedup truck we had, it was not enough to get to the home,” said Sharon Naylor, public relations coordinator for the SPCA of Brevard, Inc. “The family owning the animals refused to leave their animals in the flood water in the house. The pets were perched on top of furniture.” SPCA staffers and Angie Friers, executive director, went to the flooded home. And then the rescue began. Shane Rivard, a neighbor, saw

their plight and offered his higher truck to drive in and get the dogs. “Rivard drove close to the porch, so we could get in and get out, bringing two dogs at a time, taking them to the SPCA bus,” Naylor said. “We tried to walk in as far as we could, but it smelled so bad from sewage in the

water,” Friers said. “Rivard drove us to the house and back to my pickup with the dogs. The owners handed us the animals, and it took about five trips at least in and out. Going into the house of eight dogs, not knowing us, it was good the family was there.” “The animals were really freaked out and scared, and

the family followed us out to get them relaxed for the night. Some (animals) are still scared and some are still freaked out, but they are really warming up to the staff and will be ready for adoption,” Naylor said. Two of the dogs will return to the family after the family finds new living quarters. All the animals have been checked by veterinarians. One dog is heartworm positive, another needs surgery for a leg tumor and a kitten with an injured eye already has recovered, according to Friers.

four charities: Daily Bread, Devereux, the Salvation Army Women’s Shelter or Gabrielle Place. “We are a diverse, charitybased group and our main purpose is to serve others,” Dorcas Vice President Patricia Ryan said. “We have four main charities that we serve, but this month, our mission is obviously Hurricane Irma.” Suntree United Methodist Church is supporting the mission for hurricane relief to all those affected in our community, the Caribbean and Houston. Dorcas Circle members are participating in that effort. Attic Treasure shoppers can enjoy delicious baked goods from Dorcas’ finest bakers while they shop

for that perfect gift, small appliance or household item. “The Dorcas Circle consists of a group of approximately 50 ladies who meet monthly for the purpose of doing community service,” Ryan said. “We take our authority from the Holy Bible (Acts 9:36-43).
