Brevard parades march to the beat of the Christmas season BY FLORA REIGADA

Brevard County is on parade this Christmas season. The Viera Light Up Parade was the first to begin the holiday season on Nov. 25. The 33rd Mims Christmas Parade celebration includes a barbecue and craft bazaar hosted by the Mims Volunteer Fire Department. It takes place Saturday, Dec. 2. The craft bazaar starts at 8 a.m. at the station at 2476 Taylor Street. The barbecue starts 10:30 a.m., also at the station. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at Mims Elementary School. Its theme is "Unity in our Country." For information, call 321-267-9652.

Brown retires after fun run as Manatee Elementary principal BY JULIE STURGEON

When principal Carl Brown walks through the Manatee Elementary School cafeteria during lunch time, students get excited. Brown, who is retiring in December, is friendly, helpful and goofy with students. First and second graders love his quirkiness. Sixth graders think he’s cool. “I don’t mind being silly; I’ve dressed up as a clown, been taped to walls, eaten fried worms and been in the dunk tank over the years,” Brown said. “It’s those kinds of things that make a principal a human being.” It is his unique style that has made Brown an incredible leader. In return for the silliness factor, students make a concerted effort to do what their principal asks. And their efforts have been noticed — Manatee won the Blue Ribbon Award in addition to being an A school this year. “Bottom line, we are here for the kids,” Brown said. “If they see you being silly and willing to do things for them, they become willing to do things for themselves.” Brown, who has been an educator since 1991, said his desire to teach propelled him to pursue the field of education. Starting as a fifth-grade teacher in Seattle, he enjoyed being in the classroom. When Brown and his family moved to Florida, he started thinking about serving in another capacity. “I had an aunt who was a principal and she inspired me to consider being a principal,” Brown said. After opening three Brevard schools as a teacher,

enrollment of 925, that takes work. A team effort is evident throughout the Manatee, including the yearly fundraisers that have helped the school succeed through the years. School improvements during Brown’s tenure include a cement track, where yearly walkathons take place to raise school funds. Brown takes time throughout the day to participate in the

lead teacher and assistant principal, Brown was hired to open Manatee in 2003. Opening a new school as principal requires strong leadership and dedication, and Brown was a perfect fit for the job. “When Dr. (Richard) DiPatri (superintendent of Brevard Public Schools) hired me, he asked what can you do for Manatee?” Brown said. “I told him that Manatee will always be an A school because, in 2003, schools had to be an A school. And, of course, we have been an A school for 15 years. I did not promise him the Blue Ribbon. So that was a bonus.” The prestigious Blue Ribbon Schools Award is competitive, invitation only and shared by an elite few schools each year. When invited to apply for the

award, Brown said it took him only about 2 seconds to say yes to filling out the 20page application. Manatee was the only non-choice school in Florida to receive this year’s Blue Ribbon award, perceived by some as the pinnacle of success. It is awarded to schools with high levels of student achievement and commitment to the community. Brown is quick to share credit for Manatee’s success with his staff, saying they are a team of top-notch professionals who work closely together. He says he will miss the dedicated, hardworking staff at the school, including teachers and vice principals who enjoy close contact with students. “I don’t think Shannon (Shannon Daly, assistant

Viera’s Rousseau cements legacy with third state diving title BY CARL KOTALA

There was a time when Sarah Rousseau never pictured herself winning a single state diving title … let alone three in a row. But that’s exactly what the Viera High senior did last month, turning in a dominating performance at the Class 3A one-meter state diving championships at Sailfish Splashpark Aquatic Athletics Center in Stuart.

Her 505.5 points easily outdistanced second-place Carina Lumia, a talented freshman from Osceola High School. “It went pretty well,” Rousseau said of her state meet performance. “My dives, overall, were pretty consistent. I could have done a few a little better, but overall, it went pretty well. “… There was definitely some competition. I didn’t know if I was going to win or not so I had to be focused and do the best I could.” The win cemented Rousseau’s legacy as one of the most decorated individual athletes in Viera High sports history. “I never imagined for me

Earlier this year, Rousseau won the 16 to 18 age group in the one-meter event at the 2017 USA Diving National Preliminary Zone D Championships at an event held in Brown Deer, Wis. That qualified her for the 2017 USA Diving National Championships, which were held at Ohio State in August. Rousseau finished 12th. Last month, after taking visits to Florida State, Kentucky and Missouri, she signed her National Letter of Intent to dive for the Tigers. “All of the visits were awesome and fun,” Rosseau said. “I just knew that (Missouri) was the place for me, so I picked there. (I liked) the facility and the team. I liked the atmosphere there.” Next up for Rousseau is a trip to Canada to take part in the CAMO Invitational in Montreal before preparing for the Junior World and Junior Olympic tryouts, which begin in May. Hawk Stadium will be the site of some highly entertaining soccer this season, whether you’re watching the Viera boys or the girls on the field. The Viera boys feature a young team that should be exciting to watch grow up into district title contenders while Viera’s two-time state champion girls program has a new coach in Cal Dixon. “Obviously, it’s a good program, it’s a good bunch of girls,” Dixon said. “We’re changing the system a little bit. We’re trying to make them play a little bit more and possess the ball.” Although he is new to Viera High, Dixon is hardly new to most of the Viera High roster, having coached them with the Space Coast United Soccer Club. The Hawks were off to a 4-0 start and looking like a

team that should once again contend for the Cape Coast Conference and district titles on their way to a deep postseason run. “He is awesome,” senior Brooke Walsh said. “He expects a lot from us from practices, so it continues on into games. The training level is just as intense as our games.” Senior Emily Bodi likes the fact that Dixon holds the players accountable, which means players are always giving their best effort. “We have a lot of potential, but we have a lot of work to put in to get there,” Bodi said. And now, those athletes will have a chance to have their achievements recognized for all time. the team was named the 2016 TopDrawerSoccer.com Winter National Champion. “This means a great deal to myself and the girls,” said Lundy, who coached both state championship teams. “I could not be more proud of my girls for all of their accomplishments and to be recognized for their achievements is huge. Also, it is always fun to reminisce the glory days.” Acosta began hosting the Eat My Crust 5K race in 2012 with the help of race director Brittany Streufert. Proceeds from the race have benefited the Viera athletic program. And in 2016, Acosta formed the Power of Pizza Charities to benefit other organizations. “We started Viera Pizza back in 2004 and grew as the Viera Community grew,” Acosta wrote in an email. “Once we were able to build our Stadium (Parkway) location, we knew it was time to give back to the community that had made us so successful. “So in 2012, we decided to put together the Eat My Crust 5K to help the athletic program that was in need of funds.” V V

Hawketts debut at Viera High sporting events BY CARL KOTALA

It started out as a simple conversation, grew into a grassroots campaign complete with a more than 200 signatures on a petition and now … The Hawketts are ready to rock. “We weren’t sure if people were going to be interested,” Viera High sophomore Maggie McMahan said of the reaction to Viera High’s new dance team that began performing at school events in September. “But we got a lot of people that were interested and now we’re actually a team. We have even more people that are like, ‘Oh, that’s cool. We want to join that.’ We’ve had a really good reaction.” The idea to form the dance team came from a conversation between McMahan and junior Nicole Edwards, who decided there was a need for dance team at Viera. Their next step was to find a sponsor, and after being turned down several times, they decided to ask guidance counselor Sandy Spence. Before agreeing to it, Spence asked the girls to come back

with signatures to make sure there was interest from the student body. “The students were really open about it, because they like the changes and getting a new team,” Edward said. More than 200 students signed the petition … and the green light was given for the non-competitive dance team that does hip-hop and jazz numbers. They put up posters around the school and had tryouts that drew 45 students. From that group, they chose 23 who have performed at a JV football game, volleyball matches and can be seen performing at a soccer game on Nov. 28 and again at the “Dance for a Cure” event held at Florida Tech in January. Edwards and McMahan are team captains along with Niaiah Hernandez, Taryn Campbell and Lexi Rosenthal. “A lot of us didn’t know each other when we first started forming the team,” Hernandez said. “There were little groups of friends — of like two people — that knew each other. The team bonding over the summer, we really got to know each other. “Just going to practice and talking to people every day, you just learn everything

new about someone.” Spence said Viera had a dance team eight years ago, but it faded after one year. With only one senior on this year’s group, the girls hope the Hawketts will be around for a long time. “I like how we all came together and actually made a dance team and it’s going to last for years,” Edwards said. The newly minted Teacher of the Year at Viera Charter School put her teaching passion to the test, taking nearly 40 middle schoolers to Washington, D.C. on Oct. 25. The U.S. History, U.S. Government and Civics students leapt off the pages of their textbooks and into the nation’s hotbed of action, past, present and future. A team of student leaders was picked for the prestigious Laying of the Wreath ceremony on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “This trip of a lifetime brought history to life through the sights, sounds and activity of the nation’s capital,” said Mary Rabun, a U.S. History teacher at the school, which has students from kindergarten through eighth grade. “This is something that will change their lives forever, perhaps even influence their career choice.” Spanning several days and including visits to key landmarks, the trip will be incorporated into many learning projects back home and will be shared with other students. For two of the four student leaders picked for the Laying of the Wreath, it also was an opportunity to pay homage to many of their family members who are active or veteran members of the U.S. military. “It was fun, but more than that, it was a really big honor to get to do that,” said eighth-

New program challenges advanced readers of all ages BY CARL KOTALA

Holy Trinity third-grader Gracin Borboroglu has always loved to read because “some books are really interesting.” Well, thanks to a new pilot Reading and Writing Enrichment program at Holy Trinity’s Lower School, students such as Borboroglu will get a chance to delve deeper into reading than they ever have before. “We have offered similar experiences, but not something that’s been this organized and focused,” said Jessica Kelce, Holy Trinity’s Head of Lower School. “It’s for those students that are reading several grades above grade level with enrichment. “... A lot of times, we think of enrichment as, ‘Oh, they need a bigger book. They need more words.’ But not, ‘We need to go more in depth.’” The reading program, much like the school’s math

lab, is designed to help students think creatively instead of just regurgitating the material. Academic coach Whitney Douglas is working with 25 students ranging from kindergarten to third grade. Douglas majored in elementary education and natural science with a minor in comprehensive special education at Vanderbilt before attending Florida State to get her master’s degree in reading and language arts. The program is being funded by an anonymous Lower School family. “The teachers identify students that are working above grade level and thinking above grade level,” Douglas said. “It’s not that they’re not going be challenged and enriched in their own classroom. It’s that we think they could benefit from some additional pushing to see what they really can achieve.

“For instance, we have a kindergartner who’s reading chapter books well. It’s wonderful that he’s reading chapter books, but we want to make sure he’s getting as much reading comprehension out of that, delving deeper into the vocabulary and learning how to use that in other areas as well.” Borboroglu and the other third graders in her group are reading “A Family Under the Bridge” which is rated a 4.7 level book designed for fourth graders in their seventh month. “We’re going to have to talk about it and write down the characters we see in the book and we say stuff about them,” Borboroglu said. There also will be a writing project once the book is completed. The work is done in addition to their regular classwork. Because the work is advanced, some students who are used to having

things come easy to them will face new challenges. Seeing them find solutions is part of the beauty of the program. “It’s interesting to see the arc that a student can take in a month’s time to gain that confidence to do it themselves,” Douglas said. “A lot of the curriculum I’m using, it’s posing questions to students and letting them lead the discussion about the

book. “I’m not telling them the answers. I’m letting them synthesize it for themselves and decide amongst each other … is that really what the author is saying? What do we think is going to happen next? It’s not me lecturing. “If I’m doing my job, I’m sitting back and affirming their thoughts.” VV

Williams students place second in Jim Harbin Media Festival BY JULIE STURGEON

Television production students from Ralph Williams Elementary recently placed second in the Jim Harbin Media Festival. Williams was the only school in Brevard County to receive a state level award this year. The Jim Harbin Student Media Festival was created in honor of Jim Harbin, a former consultant with the Florida Department of Education who initiated a statewide student media festival. “There was a lot of excitement and pride from parents and teachers in accomplishing the goal and making it to the conference,” said music and TV production teacher Jim Kurowski. “Students had to

place first among six counties before even going to state.” The prize-winning story is the tale of a tribal queen who was kidnapped and rescued. The 3-minute video was written, filmed and edited by Danielle Haddox, Brett Bolton and Jossie Barillas, fifth graders in the Video Production class at Williams. Video Production is a unique class in which students create videos in the categories of drama, news, comedy or public service. Videos range from 1 to 7 minutes and must be approved by Kurowski. “Sometimes they do blue screen effect in which characters are superimposed with the sky or other backgrounds,” said Kurowski, who has been

Manatee students help charities through initiative program BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER

Manatee Elementary in Viera has an initiative program, active for the past four years, where students give back to the community. Part of that program was the presentation of collected items for charities held Nov. 16 at the school. “The kindergarten and first-grade students gave to the Brevard Humane Society for the animals giving dog food, cat food and supplies — things needed by the Humane Society,” said Shannon Daly, assistant principal at Manatee Elementary School. “Second, third and fourth graders collected toys for the Children of Brevard that is an organization for students in foster care. Letters were sent home to students’ parents and those who decided to participate were sent cards with choices listed for each student in the program. Over 300

McLellan also is the coordinator for the school’s photography club, leads charity projects and serves on many district committees. Sperr has been a music educator at Kennedy Middle School in Rockledge for seven years and a BPS teacher for 10 years. He has led his school’s ensembles to earn multiple superior assessment ratings and increased the amount of students participating in Brevard All-County Band from three to 18. Sperr has served on several district curriculum-writing teams as well as leadership teams that foster excellence in new teachers. The other four finalists are Amanda Howell of Oak Park Elementary School; Brandon T. Jenkins of Heritage High School; Kristina Latraverse of Columbia Elementary School; and Amy Teed of Jackson Middle School. The finalists were selected out of 90 candidates by a panel of judges comprising of principals and teachers from all over the county. The candidates were measured against a rigorous set of criteria that includes teaching philosophy and practice, leadership, professional development and parental engagement in the learning process. The most recent school addition is a $75,000 playground project with two enormous canvas awnings to provide much-needed shade. Dozens of showy palm trees on Manatee’s campus have been planted by the school community; most originated as seedlings in Brown’s backyard. Walking through the cafeteria, Brown pauses to open a yogurt container, answer students’ questions and encourage lunch-time etiquette. Students openly adore Brown. Some are worried that he is leaving, but he assures students that “the new principal will be nice.” As his retirement day approaches, Brown has passed on some of his Seattle Seahawks memorabilia adorning his office to student

Boy Scouts from Suntree Troop 224, along with other area troops, collected thousands of pounds of food in the Nov. 11 food drive. Troop 224 is part of the Challenger District, which collected 79,888 pounds of

food this year. That was about 3,000 pounds more than last year. The food is used to restock local food banks, then distributed to needy families and individuals throughout Brevard. The yearly event is a group effort spanning two Saturdays. Mailbox hangers

were distributed Nov. 4, and scouts then traveled to gather bags of food from doorsteps on Nov. 11. Troop 224 has experienced a growth spurt in 2017, with many younger scouts joining to replenish the troop as Eagle ranks are earned by older scouts. VV

Local author Greta McLaughlin will discuss the first two books of her Celtic Trilogy from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4 at Suntree/ Viera Public Library. Both “Celtic Cries” and “Celtic Country” are set in Ireland during the early 1900s and deal with the lives of two different families. The third novel will have the families converge in the historical fiction genre. Both novels can be read independently or out of sequence. “Celtic Country,’’ which was just published by Amazon, will be featured in Celtic Life International magazine’s Christmas edition. The novel revolves around a young

woman from County Mayo, Ireland, who runs away and marries a British soldier. During her discussion, McLaughlin will talk about the historical settings of both books. Viera Pizza changes lives one slice at a time BY FLORA REIGADA

Almost everyone loves pizza, and Mike Acosta, the owner of Viera Pizza, loves his community. To show appreciation for the support customers gave his business and how fast it grew, he wanted to give back. In 2012, Acosta discussed this with Brittany Streufert, who comes each Friday for her pizza fix. The two knew each other from running local races.

Six successful Eat My Crust 5K events resulted in more than $100,000 given to the Viera High School Athletic Department and (various causes).

“When he mentioned starting a 5K race to benefit the community, she told him, ‘go for it,' not knowing he already had designated the race director spot for her,” Acosta's website states. Despite neither of them having any race management

experience, the Eat My Crust 5K Run/Walk was born. Six successful Eat My Crust 5K events resulted in more than $100,000 given to the Viera High School Athletic Department, Special Olympics of Brevard County and the Early Steps Program, which helps disabled children younger than 3. “Organizing these races has a three-part reward system,” Acosta said. “No. 1, we get to promote and support the running community. No. 2, we are able to donate to need causes. No. 3, we get to see all the smiling faces at the race after parties.” To further their cause, Acosta and Streufert organized the nonprofit Power of Pizza Charities. POP is a 501(c)3 organization, complete with a board of directors and full schedule of fundraising events. Their stated mission follows: "To inspire youth and adults to participate in sporting events to improve their lives and health while raising funds to support local schools, athletic organizations and child development programs." Senior Santa continues tradition SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Brevard County TRIAD is working on the 18th annual Senior Santa Project. The goal of the Senior Santa project is to provide the elderly in nursing homes and hospice settings with a personal gift around the holidays. Recipients of these gifts are residents who have little or no support in the area and would not otherwise receive a special gift when family and friends usually gather. For 2017, TRIAD has adopted nearly 1,700 senior Brevard County residents to receive gifts. To accomplish this, they need assistance from the community. Santa face ornaments with specific items these

Cheers for a more sustainable holiday season The holiday season is approaching and an estimated 164 million people took advantage of Black Friday deals to save a lot of money. This is the time of the year when sales increase and might make up as much as 30 percent of annual sales for retail stores, according to the National Retail Federation reports. Unfortunately, this period also is the time of the year when the volume of household waste in the United States generally increases by 25 percent, which corresponds to about 1 million extra tons of waste. Sadly, almost 70 percent of that waste ends up in landfills according to the EPA. Landfills take up space — a lot of space. Brevard’s landfill in Cocoa, for example, grew its site from the original 285 acres to a site that totals 957 acres

With that in mind and knowing that household waste generated in the United States has been increasing since 1960 (EPA), now would be a good time to think twice and find ways to beat that trend. So here are some suggestions to make this year’s holiday season a more sustainable one: Give experiences, not things! How about camping, skydiving, or a guitar or yoga lesson? Surprise everyone with something personal and meaningful. You can find very cool ideas at SoKindRegistry.org Make your gifts. Cakes, cookies, candles, soaps, personalized ornaments or kitchen towels you sewed are sweet gifts that will warm anyone’s heart. Choose natural, organic ingredients whenever possible. Make gifts from recycled materials. How about a candle holder from a wine bottle or a coaster from used corks? Get

creative and have fun while making gifts! Buy recycled. Many new products — from furniture to accessories to artwork — can be made from recycled materials. If it is an option, buy second-hand. You might find just the perfect gift in a thrift store and, if the thrift store is in support of a cause, like Brevard Humane Society’s Molly Mutt stores, your purchase will be a gift to a cause, too. When buying new, favor sustainable products from trusted sources. Invest a moment to do some research before buying. Mobile apps such as GoodGuide, Sustainable Palm Oil Shopping and DoneGood might help you get started. Make the gift wrap part of the gift. Trays, bowls, clay pots, reusable bags, ornamental baskets, vases or fabric would make beautiful gift wraps. You may also add some character to the gift if you use newspaper, maps, blueprints or posters instead of wrapping paper. Donate, don’t waste! Ordered too much? Received a duplicate? Consider donating to sharing centers and animal shelters, or sharing with family, friends and neighbors. Also, the old that was replaced with a new can be of use for someone else.

Recycle. Electronics can be taken to Best Buy stores; rechargeable batteries to Batteries Plus; all sorts of plastic wrapping (plasticfilmrecycling.org) and styrofoam to special bins at grocery stores. Reuse tissue paper, wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and gift bags. Take toys and reusable items to Recycle Brevard (RecycleBrevard.org) in Rockledge. Check what can be put in your recycle bin (wm.com/ thinkgreen/what-can-irecycle.jsp). Do NOT place ceramics, artificial Christmas trees, Christmas lights, ornaments or bubble wrap in the recycle bin. When in doubt, the best option is to put it in the trash; otherwise, you may contaminate a good load of recyclables and end up seeing it all go to the landfills. This holiday season, any steps you choose to take as a way to help reduce the waste will make a difference. That’s the best gift you can give to all of us and to our planet. Viera Lions Club brings toys to Sharing Center of Brevard BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas with dolls that can talk and go for a walk, and footballs and games for the boys as the Viera Lions Club members continue their tradition of donating Christmas toys to the Sharing Center of Brevard. “Beginning in October, I take a letter of introduction to area businesses that explains what we do to collect toys,” said Judy Blakney, a member of the Lions Club who has been the shopper for the Lions project for the past three years. “We donated 200 toys last year. This year, we are having more than that as members have not only stepped up to the plate but have gone beyond that.” Six area businesses have helped with discounts or gift cards. From what the Lions members raised and gave for donations and adding in-store discounts, Blakney shops until all the money is gone. The deadline is Dec. 8 when “we have several of our members take their biggest vehicles and pack up all the toys taking them to Dave Brubaker, executive director/

The event featured 20 golfers from each club playing in a Ryder Cup like fashion comprised of two-man teams playing an alternate shot, scramble and best-ball format.
