FDOT approves controversial I-95 DDI project at Viera Boulevard

In November, tractors and bulldozers arrived near the intersection of Viera Boulevard and Interstate 95, marking the beginning of the controversial diverging diamond interchange (DDI) project.

Land preparation for the $17 million DDI, which has an estimated completion date of Spring 2019, signals the first phase of development. The Viera Company is contributing $2.5 million toward the project.

The additional access point will improve mobility in Viera and central Brevard County by reducing traffic congestion at the Interstate 95 interchanges with Fiske Boulevard to the north and Wickham Road to the south. Future development in Viera is expected, and the overpass allows for that.

“In Brevard County, Interstate 95 is a major north-south artery, so more exits are necessary as the population grows,” said Steve Olson, a communications manager for the Florida Department of

Transportation (FDOT). “Brevard is a very linear county, and people need to use I-95 for (both long) and shorter commutes.”

Diverging diamond designs allow for continuous traffic flow. Eastand west-bound traffic will be temporarily diverged from the right to the left side of Viera Boulevard in a crisscross pattern. Essentially, vehicles switch sides as interstate traffic enters or exits with a slight curve. This eliminates the need for traffic to turn left across oncoming traffic.

The crisscross-pattern intersection has raised concern among some Viera residents. In 2014, residents at an FDOT meeting voiced strong opposition to the DDI due to fears of an escalation of traffic, increased noise and potential accidents surrounding the interchange.

A subsequent meeting in 2016 was held, reportedly with less apprehension from residents, according to the FDOT. “The question is whether people are intuitive enough to figure it out,” Olson said. “And, we think they are.

Olson cited the Interchange Justification Report, which is the document used to justify a new access point or access point revision to an interstate. The Viera DDI report was started in June 2011 and approved February 2012. According to the FDOT, diverging diamond interchanges provide for increased safety since there are fewer conflicts between east- and west-bound traffic.

There was consideration given to address concerns with increased noise levels. The criteria to build a sound barrier includes modeling based on noise levels of 66 decibels and a cap of $42,000 per benefited receiver.

According to the FDOT, the project did not increase the noise level at any receiver that would be audible to anyone living near the interchange.

Also, Olson said, if homes are located at a distance from a wall built on a right-of-way, a wall would have little

effectiveness in reducing ambient sound.

“We have heard the concerns and we understand them,’’ Olson said. “In order to make this work, it really had to be a DDI.’’ The Viera diverging diamond is one of two such projects in Brevard.

A second DDI is in the works at Interstate 95 and St. Johns Heritage Parkway, north of Micco Road in Palm Bay. (Estimated completion is Summer 2018).

There currently are 89 operational diverging diamonds across the United States, including one in Sarasota.

“The diverging diamond takes up a lot less space,” Olson said. “You don’t need as large of a right of way. It’s a change from what people are used to, but it will be fine. It will work out.”

Viera baseball, softball teams find new home at USSSA complex

Throughout the school year, Viera High senior softball player Kelly Bishop would drive by the new United States Specialty Sports Association’s Space Coast Complex and marvel at its awesomeness.

She even wondered what it would be like to play there.

Well, this season, Bishop and her teammates — along with the Viera High baseball team — will get that chance.

In an agreement reached between the USSSA and Viera High, the Hawks will practice and play their baseball and softball games at the new complex …

For free.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Viera High baseball coach Bob Doty said. “They’ve done quite an extensive (renovation) over there.

My goodness. We’ve had a chance to go over there a couple of times and it’s absolutely immaculate, state of the art. It’s just absolutely awesome.”

As part of the agreement, which was put together by Brevard County District 4 School Board Member Matt Susin, Viera players will volunteer 10 hours each at the USSSA Stadium. They will take tickets at the gate and work the concession stands.

Proceeds from the front gate from Viera games will go to the school.

But USSSA’s generosity doesn’t end there.

Derek Smith wants to develop football players.

But that’s not where it ends for Viera High’s new head football coach.

He wants to help them develop into fine young men, too.

Perhaps that’s why Smith, 44, was the perfect choice to take over the Hawks football program after Kevin Mays announced last month he was leaving to become the athletic director at Tohopokeliga High in Osceola County.

As Viera’s defensive coordinator the past four seasons, Smith already was well known to his players.

And as a lifelong friend of Mays, he was also wellversed in the concepts of how the Hawks’ program should be run.

“We’re real similar,” Mays said. “He’s going to be energetic. He’s going to stick to the details. He’s going to be there for the kids. He’s going to put the time in to win games.

“He is all the things that you would want out of a head coach.”

With offensive line coach Mike Degory moving into the offensive coordinator slot and former Eau Gallie head coach Tim Powers coming in to work with the quarterbacks and slot backs, the Hawks are expecting a smooth transition. “(I’m impressed by) his ability to help his players understand the game of football,” senior defensive end James Klaas said. “The time and effort he puts in each week — no matter who we play — he puts in over eight hours of watching film on the weekends in his free time.

“I think, honestly, him stepping up is probably the best thing for the program right now.”

While Smith’s coaching philosophy is designed to help the Hawks become better football players, it goes far beyond the field.

“These guys are going to be future fathers,” he said. “We need to teach them now how to be young men now, and how to have that concept of being a great father.

“It starts with us shadowing those kids and making sure those kids look up to us, showing them by example how to be a good father.”

It’s no coincidence that a number of former Hawks can be seen on Viera’s sidelines during games.

“It’s because we develop relationships with the kids,” Smith said. “And that’s not going to stop.” VV

Two … well, that just made it even more special.

That was the case for Suntree Viera at the 2017 Brevard County Youth Football Cheer Association Cheer Competition held last month at Melbourne High.

Viera Suntree won the bantam and senior division championships.

“As the famous saying goes ... you don’t get what you wish for ... you get what you work for,” Suntree Viera bantam coach Lisell Roan wrote in an email.

With a nice blend of new players and established veterans, the Holy Trinity boys and girls basketball teams both hope they can gain the kind of experience early in the season that will pay off in the postseason.

“It might take a little bit, but I think within the first 10 games, we’ll have our chemistry down,” Holy Trinity senior guard Brandon Schwab said following an early-season game. “We’ll all know each other and how we play. I think once that starts coming, we’ll really start cooking.”

Viera basketball teams should continue to get better

One team has been hot right out of the gate while the other is working on playing more consistently throughout the season.

But, both the Viera High boys and girls basketball teams are hoping their seasons will be successful.

“These guys are by far the most explosive basketball team I’ve coached,” Viera boys coach Brett Fink said. “I mean, they can blow up and put points on the board faster than any team I’ve coached, and most teams I’ve seen.

“We can put up 20, 25 points in three minutes, and we’re not shocked anymore by that.”

With players such as Trey Schaneville, Sean Atkins, Kevin Chandler and Quez Menyfield hitting from the outside and players like Cortez Reid and Cooper Davis able to score inside, the Hawks have a nice mix of offensive talent.

Senior Tucker Espling is one of those players who seems to be in the middle of everything and can not only provide scoring, but plenty of defense as well.

And with a bench that includes Andre Jones, Kameron Brown, Bear

Bollinger and Quentin Mullon, it’s easy to see why the Hawks are thinking big.

Whereas past Viera boys teams have certainly had their ups and downs, this year’s group is hungry to turn the corner, particularly with seniors Espling and Schaneville leading the way.

“I know Trey and I are very determined since it’s our last season and we’ve been in this program all four years,” Espling said. “We’re very stoked about it. Since Coach Fink got here, he just turned us around, brought us (together) more like a family and we’re taking it by storm.”

New board settles in for Viera East Men's Golf Association

The new Viera East Men’s Golf Association Board of Directors has officially started the 2017-2018 golf season at the Viera East Golf Course.

The board consists of Craig Smith, president; David Hill, vice president; William Oakley, treasurer; and Tim Brown, secretary. A new board position was created for Mike Schmitt, who will be the tournament director.

Now that the winter golf season is in full swing, I have noticed how my own golf game can vary from shot to to shot. As a relatively new retiree at the age of 60, my game has not improved as much as I had hoped.

Many of my older golfing buddies from VEMA have enviable short games that I can only dream about. I

have learned the simple truth that practicing putting and chipping is the quickest and most effective way to improve a golf score.

November and December provided our golf group with some nice weather and a return to competition.

The VEMA Cup was played over two days in November.

The first round consisted of two-man teams playing a scramble format. The second round was a best-ball format.

There were two flights.

The team of John McComas and Freddie Baltazar won the first flight. Peter Maloney and Bob David placed second, and Tim Brown and Schmitt were third.

There were a lot of things Holy Trinity senior lacrosse standout Joshua Knight liked about Birmingham Southern College.

That’s what led him to sign with the NCAA Division III program.

Knight, who plays midfield for the Tigers, liked the fact that Birmingham Southern

has a small enrollment (1,300), much like Holy Trinity. He plans to major in business.

“I really liked the team, I really liked the coach and I really liked the players on the team,” Knight said. “(I liked) the school itself. I visited three or four times, so I knew where I was going. I’m really excited.” VV

Viera students enjoy special day at Kennedy Space Center

As part of the 20172018 Brevard Top Scholars event hosted by the NASA Education and Youth Engagement Division at Kennedy Space Center, three Viera High students got the experience of a lifetime.

Not only did Viera seniors John Sayut, Ethan Hund and Gus Dahl get to have lunch with retired astronaut Tom Jones, they also took part in a roundtable discussion with NASA engineers, scientists and business experts.

One of the big highlights was getting a special behindthe-scenes tour.

“We went inside the Vehicle Assembly Building, which was pretty spectacular,” Sayut said. “It looks like the Death Star.”

Sayut, Hund and Dahl were chosen by their AP Science teachers to take part in the event, which also included students from all Brevard County public schools.

by NASA said Jones — who flew four missions aboard the space shuttle — gave the students a “humorous talk,

interspersed with videos, focused on the evolution of space food from the early days of space exploration, including the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, to the space shuttle and International Space Station.

He also talked about the challenges of transporting or growing food on longduration missions such as to Mars.”

During the round-table discussion, students had the chance to hear from a panel of experts on various subjects.

“They talked a lot about what they do, and what their path was educationwise,” Sayut said. “A lot of them would get a master’s somewhere and go work for NASA while doing their Ph.D.s and stuff like that. It gives you a perspective for what you want to do with your career.”

Sayut, who wants to become either a bio-medical or mechanical engineer, said he got a lot out of the experience.

“I think I learned a lot,” he said. “It’s easy to look at some scientific concepts

Manatee Elementary School celebrated the honor of being named a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence during a Dec. 6 party at the Viera school.

“I want to share facts about the Blue Ribbon award,’’ said Carl Brown, who retired as principal at Manatee Elementary during the Christmas break. “There are only 342 schools chosen out of 130,000 in the entire United States. Of the 12 schools in Florida, only eight are elementary schools. And, Manatee was one of three in Brevard County and the only non-choice public school chosen.’’

The school’s leaders also take pride in the school’s enrichment programs such as Heroes, a kindness and anti-bullying project; their environmental initiatives; and the Manatees Give Back community outreach group.

The school’s fifth graders also are given the unique opportunity to go on a three-day camping trip in the Ocala National

Forest where they immerse themselves in hands-on, fun-filled science exploration.

“This award was earned because of hard work and the dedication of the teachers and staff,’’ said Brown, who has been an educator since 1991. “And, especially the students, our family of volunteers, our business partners and the entire school community.’’

It wasn’t an official goingaway party for Brown, but it could have been. For a popular principal who enjoyed a special rapport

with his students, the celebration was something to be shared.

The Manatee Elementary School Chorus sang “America the Beautiful’’ to begin the event. Brown gave a welcoming address, and special presentations were offered by Matt Susin and Molly Tice. Susin is the Brevard County School Board representative for District 4, and Tice is the legislative aide to Curt Smith, who is the Brevard County commissioner for District 4.

“We realized that most of our graduates, when they go away to college, are rooming and going to class with students from all over the world,” Craig said. “We thought it was just another way to prepare them for college, by being associated with people from everywhere and not just people from Melbourne.

“It’s really good for the students. They’ve even written to us and said how they were thankful we have an international program at Holy Trinity because it was just natural for them when they went to college.”

Of course, there are plenty of benefits for the international student as well.

In addition to improving their English skills and getting immersed in American culture, the student’s chances of being accepted to an American college increase greatly.

“Sometimes, it can be difficult to navigate transcripts from another country,” Craig said. “(Colleges) know if the student went to Holy Trinity, and our college office sends the transcripts, they know the kind of student they’re truly getting because they’re comparing apples to apples.

“That makes it easier and

they have better college acceptances if they’ve been to high school here. Every one (of our international students) has been accepted to an American college.”

Qian, who is taking four advanced placement classes this semester, has applied to a number of colleges, including Cornell, Cal, UCLA, Washington, North Carolina and Georgia Tech.

Craig uses the Bostonbased company, The Cambridge Institute of International Education, to find international students and translate their transcripts.

She also conducts Skype interviews with all potential students.

One of the biggest pre-

requisites, of course, is proficiency in English. Once at Holy Trinity, students take two courses — English for International Students and Communications for International Students — to help them assimilate and to get used to writing in English.

Lately, Craig has been getting inquiries from students who have friends or relatives in Melbourne, which is a bonus because she knows they will have a host family to stay with.

All host families have to pass background checks.

The experience has been invaluable for Qian, who has been staying with Bob and Krista Moyer. He has learned a lot about American culture.

Being an international student can be challenging on many fronts.

But for Holy Trinity senior Jiali “Tony” Qian, the experience has been everything he could have asked for and more.

“I love the teachers,” Qian said. “Every teacher is very nice. They are very patient.

They will answer basically every question I ask.

“And the students are friendly. I’ve made a lot of friends here. Everybody is nice.”

Qian, who is from Shanghai, China, is one of 32 Holy Trinity students who are part of the school’s International Student Program, now in its seventh year.

Students from China, Vietnam, South Korea, Sweden and Thailand are attending the Melbourne school with students from Germany and Japan expected to arrive next year.

Patricia Craig, Holy Trinity’s Director of Enrollment and International Students, said she started the program in order to help students experience different cultures before they move onto colleges like the University of Florida, where there are more than 7,000 international

CPR training prepares students for dire emergencies

When Lexi Sima collapsed to the floor at a Viera gym during a routine treadmill workout, she became a statistic. Sima is among 10 percent of Americans who have survived a sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital in 2016.

Fortunately for Sima, 10 minutes of emergency assistance from other gym members made the difference between life and death. Sima experienced sudden cardiac arrest, often fatal, but within seconds after Sima fell off a treadmill, fellow gym members were by her side performing CPR and then using an automated external defibrillator (AED).

“It really can happen to anyone,” said Sima, who recently spoke to a group of students at Viera High School.

Viera theatre troupe’s one-act performance impresses judges

For only the second time in 12 years, Viera High School is sending a group of theatre students to perform their one-act play at the state competition.

And if their performance of “Seussification of a Midsummer Night’s Dream” at last month’s district event at Eau Gallie High is any indication, they’re going to give quite an inspiring performance.

“The very first thing the judges said to us was, ‘You

blew us away,’” Viera Theater Arts teacher Eloise Evans said. “I’ve never heard that from a judge in 30 years of teaching. The last thing was, (one of the judges) took a selfie with the cast. I’ve never seen that before.”

The state Thespian Festival will take place March 14 at the Straz Center in Ferguson Hall in Tampa.

Although Viera has sent other performers to the state event, it’s the first time a One Act has made it since 2010.

“I’m ecstatic,” said Viera student Emily Simon, the

assistant director and stage manager.

“It’s the first show that I’ve assistant directed and it’s the first straight play that I’ve stage managed. To hear that it’s going to state for the first time in forever is just amazing.”

Senior Trevor Bickham, president of Viera High School Troupe 7083, described the one-act play as taking William Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and giving it a Dr. Seuss spin. “We’ve taken the play, and basically, we’ve made it

rhyme,” he said.

“It’s a very fun role,” he said. “The whole cast has been great to work with.

Ever since we started, it’s just been a blast to be a part of. It’s all come together very smoothly.”

Capt. Winston Scott is enjoying life as a musician after a successful career as an astronaut.

He also is a retired U.S. Navy captain and naval aviator.

Scott earned a bachelor’s degree in music, a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering and has been awarded honorary doctorate degrees from Florida Atlantic University and Michigan State University.

As a musician, Scott was awarded a teaching certificate for music education from the state of Florida. He was inducted into the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity (Professional Honorary Fraternity for men in music). He has been a composer, arranger and performer for numerous musical organizations.

Scott was minister of music for First Baptist Church of Pacific Grove in Pacific Grove, Calif. from 1978 until 1980.

He has performed with recording greats such as soul singer Betty Wright, who won a Grammy in 1972.

In 2012, Scott was awarded the Edwin Franko Goldman Award. This is a national award presented annually by the American Bandmaster’s Association to the individual, outside of professional bandmasters, who has rendered conspicuous service in the interest of bands and band music in America.

Recently, Scott appeared as a guest lecturer and

performer with Florida Tech artist-in-residence Christian Tamburr in his highly acclaimed Sonic Leadership program. Scott also recently was featured on recordings released by Johnson and singer Billy Lee. Scott also has been featured as a guest conductor for the Stetson University Wind Ensemble; a guest soloist for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; a guest soloist for the Melbourne Municipal Band; a composer and arranger for the Florida Tech faculty band Twitchy (three compositions on Twitchy’s second CD release); a director, composer and arranger for the Florida Tech Jazz Syndicate; and a guest lecturer for the Brevard Symphony Orchestra Guild.

During his Navy career, Scott served as an antisubmarine warfare helicopter pilot, Top Gun fighter pilot, test pilot and NASA astronaut.

He accumulated more than 7,000 hours of flight time in more than 25 different aircraft and more than 200 shipboard landings. As an astronaut, Scott logged more than 24 days in space, including three spacewalks.

Not every organization would go so far to help out a local school, but in the case of the USSSA, it seemed like a natural fit. “We’re definitely, 100 percent community oriented,� said USSSA Chief Operations Officer Kevin Reynolds. “And with Viera High School being right across the street, talking with the principal (Mike Alba) and Don DeDonatis, our CEO, and Matt Susin and (Viera’s) athletic director (Chris Gallagher), their schedule and our schedule worked out. “We wanted them to play in a first-class facility. It’s a partnership, both in the

operation and in the field. High school and being in the sports business is about creating memories. They’ll be able to talk about this for years to come.�

Bishop, for one, can’t wait for the season to start. “I am very excited to play there,� she said. “I drive past it almost every day and it looks amazing. The turf infield will definitely take some getting used to, but I’m looking forward to it. “We are all very thankful that USSSA is letting us use their facilities.�

His Place Ministries serves as cold weather shelter for homeless

When the temperature plummets to below 45 degrees in Melbourne, His Place Ministries opens its doors up to folks who need a warm place to sleep.

“We are the only cold weather shelter in the area,” said Terry Morris, the pastor of His Place Ministries.

“We average about 70 people a night when we’re open.”

His Place Ministries is somewhat of a landmark, located at the intersection

of U.S.1 and U.S. Highway 192. The church mission is simple: To help the needy and provide a helping hand to make the world a better place.

“We just put a sign out when we’re going to be open,” Morris said. “It’s pretty simple and it works.”

Volunteers are crucial to helping the cold weather shelter run smoothly.

When open, the shelter has two- to three-hour shifts for volunteers to sign up. Homemade soup is served when the shelter is open, thanks to

local volunteers.

“We have the most delicious soup,” Morris said. “We also serve a weekly meal on Sunday afternoon.”

When folks leave the shelter, the church often sends a few things with them. Donations of canned protein, sleeping bags and tents are in high demand for this purpose.

His Place Ministries has an unusual name, and Morris had a story about how the name came about.

“When I was talking about a name

for this church with other pastors, I said, ‘this is his place, not mine,’ ” Morris said. “Someone said that was a great idea for a name.”

Hurricanes and economic growth might seem to have nothing in common, but having witnessed the impact of both on Brevard County I could argue otherwise.

Green events should be a New Year’s resolution While separating recyclables from trash after collecting for a local event, I wondered how much more we could have avoided burying in our landfills.

Even though I was processing recycle bins, 83 percent of the content in the bins was either nonrecyclable items or had to be thrown away because it

was soiled and could not be recycled. That was a disheartening experience, but it prompted me to think that we can do better.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, a California study found that the average participant at a public event generates 2.5 pounds of waste per day.

That means more than 7,000 pounds of waste was saved from the landfills.

What a great feat and an impressive example to be followed. It shows that big events can be successful and friendly to the earth at the same time.

Putting on such events and being environmentally conscious should be the goal of any organization, especially groups whose mission is to protect and preserve the environment.

The cost involved in the zoo’s effort might be prohibitive to most, but that should not stop every single event organizer from making improvements and taking steps toward creating more sustainable events. In that case, baby steps could be the best approach.

Take the example of Daytona State College’s ShORE (SHaring Our Research with Everyone) annual research symposium for students, scientists and the community. In 2016, Dr. Debra W. Woodall of the Institute of Marine and Environmental Studies and the ShORE organizer, hoped to reduce the waste generated at the symposium and implement some green initiatives.

She promoted the use of individual water bottles and prevented hundreds of cups from being sent to the landfills. She made a sign to alert everyone about what was being done to reduce the event’s footprint.

“We are working to make all of our public events green,” Woodall said.

For Woodall’s deeds, ShORE 2016 was awarded a green event certificate through the 3Rs and Beyond Green Event Certification Program (3rsandbeyond. org), a program that offers a guideline on how to make events more sustainable.

The program, whose goal is to recognize events that hit the mark, is available to any event organizer. It is free.

No matter the change, big leaps or baby steps have one thing in common — commitment. Starting with the event organizer, it can extend to vendors, volunteers and attendees.

The degree of earthfriendliness that is achieved will depend on other factors, too. But, if there is no commitment, all bets are off.

So if you are an event organizer, add to your 2018 resolution to commit to more sustainable events.

Write family story with help of Genealogical Society of South Brevard

Discovering the secrets of your family’s history can be full of unexpected surprises.

Douglas Burnett, an engineer-turned history buff, has traveled into his past.

Now, he wants you to join him and others on your own exciting journey to uncover the clues to your family’s story.

For $25 a year, the Genealogical Society of South Brevard (GSSB) offers unlimited assistance in helping you create your family tree.

“I worked at Cape Canaveral for 40 years,” said Burnett, the publicity chair of the GSSB. “I thought historians and English majors were using up my good oxygen. Since retiring

and discovering genealogy, I have done a 180.”

The GSSB will get you started on weaving your way through the winding road of how you got here. Burnett says the hobby has been a turnaround for his interest in life.

“I love history, finding out what my family did and didn’t do, debunking family stories from over the years,” Burnett said.

“To me, the history of the development of my family, along with the development of the southeastern area of the U.S., which is where my family stayed since 1635, is (fascinating). Fortunately, my wife is just as enthused about it as I am.”

One of the advantages of belonging to the GSSB is that members enlist the help of

more experienced family historians such as Diane Rice Young, president of GSSB. “You start associating with people with like interests,” Rice Young said.

“We acquaint people in the community with some of the joys of the process. We know how to assist with filling out generation charts; we have members who can help (newcomers) check on ancestry.”

To get started, there are two sets of classes a year.

Family stories can then be debunked or enriched when you start sleuthing into your own family’s mysteries. If you have no idea where to start, just show up at the next meeting with a few key family names, and a web search will be conducted.

of your parents and your grandparents as the first step. Volunteers will then help you begin or extend your family tree through a database.

“DNA is taking genealogy by storm,” Burnett said.

“Unfortunately, many people think it is the answer.

But, it is just one piece of information. The best guess is that only about 20 percent of the information you need is online. Eventually, you’re going to have to get your hands dirty and visit the courthouse, the historical society and the library.”

Because Brevard is such an extensive linear county, there are a few genealogical societies. Members of any of the societies can access databases, use the Melbourne and Cocoa reference collections and get assistance from friendly members of the society. They also have access to the 5,000book collection housed at the Melbourne library.
