Quest students excited to put on Alice in Wonderland BY CARL KOTALA

Quest Elementary School sixth grader Sephorah Barton could hardly contain her excitement about getting to play Alice in the school’s production of Alice in Wonderland. “We had to put in our favorite memory for sixth grade graduation, and this was – right off the top – my favorite memory,” Barton said. “And it will always probably be my favorite memory.” What made Barton’s comment stand out was that it came during dress rehearsal. That’s how excited she was. Quest’s drama department put on three separate performances of the all-time classic last month prior to the end of

the school year, and the sixth grader’s graduation. Third-grade teacher Tanya Clark, who took over the drama program shortly after the school year began, said she had an “awesome” experience putting the production together. “It’s been good,” Clark said. “It’s been kind of crazy. We’ve had a small budget and a lot of creativity. It’s been a lot of making things from scratch and piecing them together. I think it made it better. It made it creative and the kids have appreciated it. And they’ve all worked so hard.” Barton, who played a background chorus member in last year’s showing of Krazy Kamp, said she was so excited to hear that the drama program was coming back that she wasn’t even

nervous about being one of three students to portray Alice in the show. Sixth-grader Adison Maxwell, who played the caterpillar and Tweetle Dum, also was rather eager to take the stage. “I’ve been putting a lot of time and effort into it, practicing at home,” Maxwell said. “I’m just really excited. I think it’s going to be an awesome production.” Other cast members included: Julia Cipriano, Isabella DeStafano, Kylee Wade, Olivia Holston, Isabella Visokay, Braedyn

because she gets to scream as she runs off stage. “I’m always the loudest because I like screaming,” she said. And, as she mentioned earlier, it doesn’t sound like Barton going to forget about being in Alice in Wonderland anytime soon. “I can see in 40 years … I’m probably going to be old by then … I’m going to remember (that) in Krazy Kamp, I was a chorus member,” she said. “Well, grandchildren, did you know that actually in my sixth grade, I was Alice in Alice in Wonderland.” V V

When Viera High School art students Maura Brumbaugh, Jenny Lekarczyk and Luke Shirley visit the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg during the course of the next few months, they’ll be able to say something other artists can only dream of. “You see that? I did that.” The Viera students in Susan West’s art classes were among 100 chosen to have their work displayed as part of the Dali Museum’s Student Surrealistic Art Exhibit, “The Marvelous, the Fantastic & the Grotesque.” The display will be shown until Aug. 26, after which there will be 12 awards presented to high school students based on honorable mention, merit and excellence. “To know that my artwork is going to be at such a well-known museum is completely mind blowing,” Lekarczyk, a junior, wrote in an email. “Hearing this fantastic news from Dr. West made me feel beyond proud and ecstatic.” Brumbaugh and Shirley wrote that they were equally surprised and happy to know their work will be displayed and can’t wait for their family, friends and other museum guests to see what they have created. And each went about it in their own way. Shirley wrote that the only requirement for the assignment was to use a hand in a surrealistic manner. “Right away, I got the idea to have a melting hand and what better way to put it inside an ice cream cone,” the sophomore wrote. “From the idea, it gave me the motivation to create a picnic scene which included a hot dog, a large soda, and a menacing sun that is responsible for the drooping hand representing ice cream. “It fits into the Marvelous, Fantastic and Grotesque aspect of a Surreal work of art because it gives inanimate objects a

personality and a life.” Brumbaugh, a senior who enjoys drawing birds, decided to incorporate a boat-tailed Grackle into her composition. “The grackle is trying to fly but seems to be weighed down by its peculiar tail, which is a human hand,” she wrote. “This fits into the category of Grotesque art due to the slightly unnerving aspect of a hand being part of a bird. “It would certainly be creepy to see this thing in real life. I was inspired by my love of birds and my fascination of drawing living creatures.” Lekarczyk got her inspiration from the stars. “I came up with this concept by having the idea that I wanted to tie space and Surrealism together,” she wrote. “My objective was to portray this Surrealistic, dreamlike state and definitely include one of my favorite subjects which is space.

Luke Shirley and Jenny Lekarczyk display their artwork that will be shown in the Dali Museum until Aug. 26.

“So that is exactly why I chose to draw a hand holding planets in space.” It’s been quite a few months for Viera High School art students. In addition to the Dali Museum exhibit honors, Lekarczyk took first place at the Melbourne Art Festival and Viera’s Danielle Fox won Best of Show at the Cape Canaveral Student Art Show. Brumbaugh also was a winner at the National Ocean Pals Computer Graphic Poster Competition. V V

Sellout Prayer Breakfast: Speak a bright future into existence BY LINDA WIGGINS

As far back as the beginning of recorded human history, one thing has hindered humanity’s youth and future, according to Viera resident Laura Wallace. The CPA, entrepreneur, spiritual leader and keynote speaker of the Sixth Annual Space Coast Prayer Breakfast on May 3 told a sellout crowd that bashing the next generation has to stop. “If the next generation is the future for Brevard, for Florida, for the country,” Wallace said, “let’s empower them. They are our future leaders. Let’s encourage them, help their parents, get elbowto-elbow alongside them to help their children flourish.” The responding applause indicated the time has come. The Space Coast Prayer Breakfast began in Viera, at the bidding of Congressman Bill Posey, whose Brevard headquarters are in the Government Center in Viera. He sought out a volunteer who could bring leaders from faith communities, government, business,

Enter Carol Wheatley of Melbourne, who launched the event at the Melbourne Holiday Inn-Viera Conference Center in 2013. Running the concept up the flag pole, no one was sure if anyone would salute. But salute they did. Sponsors, participants and attendees overflowed the popular Viera/Suntree

convention space. “It turns out this was a universally embraced need. The only problem we have is finding a place that is centrally located and big enough to hold everyone who wants to attend,” Wheatley said. Posey, who attends each year and is the honorary chairman, said it is not his event but a community event. He commented after the event that Wheatley does an excellent job at bringing the community together behind the concept of praying for our leaders. “We bring together each segment of the community, and each have their own set of needs and considerations, whether it is education, law enforcement, so on. But we all are united in our desire to bring God’s hedge of protection over us, along with the healing and prosperity that comes with it. In fact, our 2018 theme is Unity,” Wallace said. Wallace added we are all imbued with God’s power, in particular, speaking something into existence,

Viera High graduate qualifies for crew Nationals

BY BRENDA EGGERT BRADER

Viera resident Sydney Novak, a recent graduate of Viera High, rows for the South Orlando Rowing Association’s high school crew team. As a member of that team, Novak is headed to the U.S. National Championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 8-10. “This is the first crew in 10 years of girls to make it to the nationals in this club,” said Coach Terry Davison. “The last one to go to nationals was a boys double four years ago. But this girls team is the first of many, I hope. This is the first for all girls.” Working toward the championship, the team crew received a secondplace silver medal and a third-place bronze medal at the Florida State Rowing Championships in April

in Sarasota, according to Novak's father, Bill. The crew received a third-place bronze medal at the Southeast Regionals, held May 12-13 in Sarasota, qualifying the crew to row at the U.S. National Championships. Novak has been rowing for five years. This will be her

third time qualifying for the U.S. National Championships. A rowing team has four rowers and a coxswain, who is the coach onboard, keeping rowers organized and coordinated toward the goal. The team must be committed to daily practice to get to the national level.

Sydney Novak is looking forward to competing in the U.S. National Championships

“Training is six days a week. The ones (teams) that make the nationals have trained a lot,” Davison said. “They have to be committed for they train from 3:305:30 p.m. each day and again Saturday at 8 a.m., and then national teams do Sunday morning as well for technique work when getting

toward state championships.” But dedication for each team member consists of three things: family, academics and rowing, added Davison. Davison adds that both his sons are junior rowers, and one is on a full rowing scholarship at the University of Washington. “There are many opportunities for women and men for rowing scholarships because most universities have rowing teams,” Davison said. “It is a really popular event.” “Crew is a sport for people of all ages,” said Bill Novak. The South Orlando Rowing Association offers Learn to Row events where people of all ages can come out and try a new sport that’s fun and has tremendous health benefits. Holy Trinity athletic director takes new job in Dominican Republic

Chiropractic Life Clinic “Where Your Health is Our Priority”

BY CARL KOTALA

After four years as Holy Trinity’s athletic director, Scott Crockett is moving on. “I came in with the freshmen. I’m going out with the seniors,” the 43-year-old said. Crockett’s not just moving to another school. He and his family are moving to a different country. Crockett will become athletic director at the Carol Morgan School in the Dominican Republic. His last day at Holy Trinity is June 30. “I’m excited and nervous,” he said. “Moving to a foreign country can be a little intimidating, but I’ll take a leap of faith. “I did that coming here. I’d lived in Tennessee for 40 years and jumped off the cliff and I hit the water. I’m going to try that again.” In a statement, Holy Trinity President Katherine Cobb praised the work Crockett has done.

Holy Trinity Athletic Director Scott Crockett is leaving the school after four years to take a job in the Dominican Republic.

“Scott Crockett has made a great impact in his four years as athletic director for Holy Trinity, leading our teams to 27 district championships, 12 region championships and two state championships,” Cobb said. “We will greatly miss Scott, his wife, Joy, who has taught kindergarten for us the past two years, and their two boys. We wish them the best in their new home.” Asked what he was most proud of in his time at the

school, Crockett said it wasn’t about wins and losses, but the way the students were able to grow not just as athletes, but also as people. “It was good,” Crockett said of his time at Holy Trinity. “It was a challenge. We had our ups and our downs, but you have that with any job. It was a great experience for me and my family. “I owe Holy Trinity a lot because they took a chance on me. I think it worked out pretty well for both of us.”V V

Holy Trinity opens 2018 football season at Merritt Island BY CARL KOTALA

While there are a number of intriguing games on Holy Trinity’s 2018 football schedule, one matchup in particular stands out. After hosting Fort Pierce Central in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 17, the Tigers will open the regular season on the road with a game against a team with a great football tradition in Brevard County: The Merritt Island Mustangs. “Merritt Island will be the biggest game in HT football history, just because of the long history that Merritt Island has,” said Tigers’ coach Nate Hooks Jr.. “And it’s an incounty game. “This school has played the likes of American Heritage (Delray Beach) and Tampa Catholic and Jacksonville Bolles. But to play a team with that kind of pedigree is huge for the program, especially with as many young players as we will have.” It will be a big game for Merritt Island, too, as new coach Hurlie Brown will be making his regular-season debut for the Mustangs. But there’s plenty more for Holy Trinity football fans to chew on. After playing Merritt Island in Week 1, the Tigers will head south to play American Heritage of Delray Beach. Holy Trinity’s first regular-

season home game will come Sept. 7 when Berean Christian comes to town. That will be followed by three consecutive road games — at West Oaks, John Carroll and Orlando Christian Prep — before the Tigers return home Oct. 5 to host Pembroke Pines Charter. That matchup will be followed by home games against Agape Christian, Coral Springs Christian and Atlantic. After dealing with a number of critical injuries and playing with a lineup that featured 13

eighth or ninth graders in the starting lineup, the Tigers are eager to show the county how much they’ve improved since last season. And the Tigers can’t think of a better way to kick off a season they hope will end with a spot in the playoffs. “I’m looking forward to playing a county game,” rising senior Lino Odenat said. “Since I’ve been here at Holy Trinity, we haven’t played a county game. I’m looking forward to that.” V V

since she first took up the sport in March 2005 at age 70. Race trophies fill a room in her Satellite Beach home, collecting medals and trophies from each run. “I used to go to the Calvary Chapel on Minton Road and they sponsored a race (to raise funds) for tsunami (victims),” said Osterly who decided to participate. “Two bachelor friends of mine in their 40s didn’t place, but I got a first-place trophy and walked.”

"I will race as long as I am physically able. I don't care if I am the last person in the chute, as long as I finish.” — Roberta Osterly

So, the racing and walking began for Osterly. “Every time you go to a race you get a plastic bag filled with more running locations, and I just started filling them out and going to the races. You meet some really nice people.” Now, with the aid of her walker, Osterly can continue her racing. Osterly didn’t need a walker when she first started participating.

VIERA VOICE Jill Blue Gaines

Roberta Osterly, 83, crosses the finish line during the Eat My Crust 5K with the help of a walker.

“In the last seven or eight months, I have used the walker. I fell in August 2017 in a race — the first race of the season for the Space Coast Runners. I used to run in a race every weekend, but since my fall I have cut way back. I have some medical problems, so I need to take it easy. I will probably do the one-mile and two-mile races. The 3K and 5K races are more than I want to do anymore.” The running walker says she only supports the races in which the raised funds benefit and stay in Brevard County. “Sunday (May 6) we gave $20,000 to the sports programs at Viera High School. At the same race we raised funds for Special Olympics and another organization — three places the money went.” Osterly is a member of the Space Coast Runners Club. She also runs for a team

supported by the Running Zone. “The Running Zone asked me if I wanted to join the team. I hesitated, but I did. I don’t run — I walk. It took me an hour and 30 minutes this last race. I used to be able to do it in one hour or less, but that was 13 years ago. I am older and those three years over 80 make a difference.” The running walker competes in a series with the Running Zone where she racks up points for every race successfully completed. Points are awarded by age groups. Those who participate in all the Running Zone races of the season earn a special medal at the end of the season. “I will race as long as I am physically able,” Osterly said. “I don’t care if I am the last person in the chute, as long as I finish. I need to satisfy myself that I am still capable.”V V

A longer season and a new tournament made this another special season for members of the Duran Women’s Golf Association. Laurie Thomas was the winner of the inaugural Joan Raymond Cup trophy, which was named after one of the league’s founding members who passed away in 2017. Sue Ann Franklin and Susan Crain were the highest point winners during the course of the season, which began in October, and consisted of weekly tournaments where players could rack up points to qualify for the final competition. Juanita Call also recorded the first hole-in-one the league has seen in several years. “Duran was thrilled with another successful DWGA season,” Duran PGA Professional Matt Morrison wrote in an email. “It’s exciting to see the

league grow and thrive each year. We are very grateful to our sponsors — Deb Tomczak Realtor and Robbie Rosenberger from Golf Carts Unlimited. Their involvement allows the players to enjoy great prizes and benefits.” It was because of those sponsors that the DWGA was able to add another month to the season and come up with the season-ending Joan Raymond Cup competition. And just like its counterpart, the Duran Men’s Golf Association, the women’s league is continuing to become more popular with local golfers. “DWGA gained new members this past season across a broad range of handicaps,” League President Sally Soutter wrote in an email. “It was an enjoyable season for our 44 members as our events were competitive, but friendly, and we celebrated each other’s good play throughout.”V V

South Carolina trip highlights Viera football’s 2018 schedule BY CARL KOTALA

Viera High School's 2018 football schedule looks much like last year’s slate with one major exception. After going on the road and winning in Washington D.C., last season, the Hawks will be heading to South Carolina to play Fort Dorchester High School in Week 2 come this fall. “I’m looking forward to it a lot,” senior Brock Holland said. “As a team, we’re going to put a lot of hard work in practice to get ready for what we’re going to do there.” It will mark the third time the Hawks have played an out-of-state game. Viera traveled to Allen, Texas, three years ago, then hosted Gonzaga of Washington D.C., in 2016, before concluding the home-and-home series with a win last year. Holland said the Hawks will be representing “all of Florida” when they visit Fort Dorchester. “That school doesn’t know what Florida schools are like,” Holland said. “We’re going up there to show them what Florida’s got and what type of talent we have.” While the South Carolina trip might be one of the

highlights of the year for the Hawks, it will hardly be the only big game on Viera’s schedule. After opening at home against Vero Beach in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 17, Viera will travel to McLarty Stadium to play Rockledge in what figures to be a highly-charged season opener. Holy Trinity Latin students finish third in state BY CARL KOTALA

Holy Trinity Latin students had a lot to be happy about after this year’s State Latin Forum. Though they repeated their third-place finish from last year, the students scored more points (321) than any other Holy Trinity team in history, won a number of individual honors, and placed two officers on the Florida Junior Classical League (FJCL) board. “As long as our points went up, I can’t (complain),” Holy Trinity Latin teacher — and FJCL chair — Adam Mize said. “I told the kids (I’ll be happy) as long as we do a little bit better each year. I have aspirations of doing even better, but I was happy with it. First time over 300 points.” Before Mize arrived at Holy Trinity three years ago, the highest the school had finished in the competition was 11th. Over the past three years,

the students have finished eighth and now third for two consecutive years. While the students were hoping to place higher than last year, they were encouraged that they increased their point total. Esha Patel, who served as technology coordinator this past year, was elected by her peers to be the Parliamentarian of next year’s student board that will help run the forum. “It was a really good experience being on the board and I wanted to do that again,” she said. Meanwhile, Charlotte Varnes will step into the role of technology coordinator after watching Patel handle the job last year. “I’ve been going to Latin Forum for three years now, and I think getting to plan it and to help run the event was something I wanted to do,” Varnes said. “As the technology coordinator, I help Mr. Mize run

Viera students enjoy trip to Colorado for NOSB

Five Viera High School students got to experience a little bit of everything at this year’s finals of the 21st annual National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) in Boulder, Colo., in late April. “It even snowed when we were walking to the competition,” senior Alyssa Hofmann said. Viera’s Ocean Bowl team, which qualified for the event for the second year in a row by winning the Manatee Bowl in South Florida earlier this year, placed among the top 20 at the national competition. Not only did they get to spend more time together as friends, but they also got to be around like-minded people who share a passion for marine science. “It gives you a little hope,” Howe said. “I feel like a lot of people don’t think of marine science as something that needs to be a top priority, or as a field that anyone should ever go into. “Like if I ever say I want to go into marine science,

Quest Elementary breaks out the bikes for special day

School security bolstered after unanimous vote

BY JULIE STURGEON

Encouraged to promote safety and physical education, many students at Quest Elementary School rode their bicycles to school May 9 as they participated in National Biketo-School Day. Quest Elementary has 1,040 students. Christina Nestor and physical education teachers supported the Bike Day, which encouraged safety. That included wearing helmets and following the rules of the road. Promoting exercise also was a theme for the day. Nestor handed out bike safety brochures as the students locked up their bikes at the school’s bike racks. Exercise wasn’t just for the children as Kelli Peck cycled with her son, sixth-grader Brice VanKregten, and their neighbor

The Brevard County school Board voted 5-0 in favor of hiring full-time school safety and security specialists for Space Coast schools at a Viera school board meeting May 8. Board members Andy Ziegler, Tina Descovich and John Craig spoke favorably about the school safety and security specialist program, while Misty Belford and John Craig offered no commentary. BPS superintendent's leaves for national education nonprofit SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE

Superintendent Desmond Blackburn submitted his resignation May 14 to the Brevard County School Board. Blackburn will become chief executive officer of the California-based New Teacher Center, a national nonprofit “focused on improving student learning by accelerating the effectiveness of teachers and school leaders.”

SECURITY

continued from page 15

Board chairman Craig explained that the school Safety and security specialists will be proactive. They will have concealed gun permits and will serve as special sheriff’s deputies. Their identities also will be known to staff and students. School safety and security specialists must also go through 176 hours of training through the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. Job duties will include conducting perimeter and inner school campus checks throughout the day, monitoring students on campus, and monitoring surveillance technology. The security officers also will confront an active assailant and use a weapon, if necessary. “They can be walking perimeter fences,” said Board Vice Chair Tina Descovich of security specialists. “They can be checking interior locks.

“I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to lead NTC,” said Blackburn, who will be based in Florida. “As both an educator and district leader, I have a thorough understanding of the challenges that teachers face in the classroom, the responsibilities of school leaders, and the important role that mentors and coaches play to help educators.” Blackburn has served as

I believe in every layer of security in our schools.” A draft of the school security officer job description proposed a salary and benefit package of $40,431, bringing the estimated cost to the school district to $1.2 million. “We will continue to work on the job description. It’s a really rough draft at this point,” Descovich said. “We welcome ideas on the job description. Email some of us or all of us for some of the requirements you’d like to see.” “We need a solution for proactive security,” Ziegler said. “I think this is a great measure.” Prior to the vote, 28 attendees spoke at the May 8th, meeting, arguing both for and against arming school staff. Citizens against the proposal to arm school staff pleaded with the board to hire more armed school resource officers for every school. On other school security measures, the board members approved an agreement with the Brevard Sheriff’s Office that calls for

superintendent of BPS since 2015. “We wish Dr. Blackburn and his family the very best,” said School Board Chairman John Craig. “We thank him for his leadership in the community and the positive impact he has had on our schools and children.” Craig said the school board will start its search for a new superintendent during a workshop.V V

hiring school resource officers, hardening of school buildings, and active shooter training for students and staff. In the weeks before the meeting, BPS hosted three public town hall meetings where community members could voice their opinions on school security measures. Several non-scientific surveys also were sent to BPS staff, families, and the community. From those surveys, it was reported that the majority of staff and students were opposed to having armed school employees. The board also postponed implementation of a voluntary armed guardian program, Sheriff-Trained On-Site Marshall Program (STOMP) in a 3-2 vote, with members Misty Belford, John Craig, and Andy Ziegler supporting postponement. Matt Susin and Tina Descovich voted against STOMP. STOMP allows for the arming of non-teaching staff who are current school employees. V V

Brevard County needs foster youth mentorship BY JULIE STURGEON

Foster children in Florida often face a grim reality when they reach the age of 18. Just when they officially become adults, these teens often find themselves homeless. On their 18th birthday, many foster teens in Florida age out of the foster system, leaving them without a family to rely on or a place to call home. The ensuing negative consequences include emotional loss, depression, poverty, and sometimes drug addiction. Starting in August, there will be hope for some Brevard teens thanks to LiftUp Foster Teens, an outreach program at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Melbourne. Co-directors Lisa Soloway and Deacon Stacey Westphal are excited about the program’s future. “We have a great need in

Brevard County for the LiftUp program,” Soloway said. “I am excited that our church will be making such a difference in the life of teens aging out of foster care.” At a time when foster youths need it the most, Holy Trinity parish mentors will help young adults with challenges and arm them with skills to build personal relationships and form a bond with their community. The Holy Trinity Episcopal Church mentoring program will introduce key concepts, such as living skills, social skills, financial responsibility, leadership and spiritual empowerment. The Alpha for Youth Program, under the direction of co-rector Rev. Pamela Easterday, will guide the teens in their spiritual growth. “Many teens age out of foster care in every county of Florida,” Soloway said. “Many of them struggle to finish high

school, much less have the adults they need in their life to encourage them to go to college.’’ LiftUP also will provide information on car ownership and other repeat topics to further equip them for life as an adult. After graduating from high school, students will earn a good used car. Holy Trinity parishioners and members of the community will volunteer as mentors and instructors for the participating teens. Soloway has met with key agencies that take care of foster teens in Melbourne, such as Brevard Family Partnership, the Haven for Children Devereux Advanced Behavioral, Children’s Home Society and Eckerd Kids. “My husband, Pete, and I adopted our daughter, and fourth child, from foster care in Connecticut in 2002, at the age of 8,” Soloway said. “I could not imagine her being

Viera High School history teacher Jeff Draves went to work recently expecting a day like any other. But, by second period, he would discover that a big surprise was in store for him.

“I couldn’t do it without great students, great support from the administration and from my fellow teachers.” Kim Garton, a former Viera High government teacher, and currently the social studies resource teacher

for Brevard County Schools, came to see Draves at his classroom. While there, she awarded him with the well-deserved title of Social Studies Teacher of the Year. Principal Mike Alba, and a group of 15 students, all fans of Draves, also joined in on the surprise. “I couldn’t do it without great students, great support from the administration and from my fellow teachers,” Draves said. Draves is one of the founding teachers at Viera High School. He credited his district win to the students he has taught during his 12 years at the school. “When you teach the best kids, you get rewarded for it,” he said. V V

Eagle Scouts make contributions in meaningful ways BY JULIE STURGEON

Area scouts have been busy completing Eagle projects and helping the community during the past year. Brendan Durante, an 11th grader at Viera High School and a member of Boy Scouts Troop 720, received his Eagle Scout award in January. His Eagle project was for Bridges, a non-profit

organization that provides community programs to individuals with disabilities. “I wanted to make something that would last, and (Bridges) wanted and needed a garden and a bench,” Durante said. Durante built a bench and planted a vegetable garden with the help of his troop and family. Durante’s plan was for the garden to be tended by the adults as part

High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is all the rage and for good reason. Research has shown shorter workouts with spurts of intensity can burn more calories than longer ones. Viera has a new option for anyone looking for HIIT fitness — or for those who just enjoy kickboxing for exercise. 9Round is a 30-minute kickboxing circuit workout that can burn up to 500 calories per session. The newly opened Viera location, is located at 2338 Citadel Way, located just north of The Avenue Viera in the same plaza as First Watch. The Viera location is one of 600 throughout the country. “We picked this spot because of the high level of foot and regular traffic. We’re really visible here,” Kim Cunningham, co-owner, said. “We also know that this type of workout is a fit for people who live in Viera and the nearby areas.” So how does it work? There are no set class times and people can arrive at any point when 9Round is open to work out. When clients arrive, they start with a brief warmup and then begin on round 1, moving through each station

until round 9 has been completed. Each station takes 3 minutes to complete with a short strength or cardio break in between. A personal trainer follows the people working out at each station, explaining each exercise and answering questions. The stations are designed for a maximum of two people at a time, but several people can be completing different circuits at the same time, all on the same timer. The fundamentals of kickboxing are the driving force behind the workouts, incorporating elements of kicking, punching and core balance. The workouts change each day so a client will never do the exact routine on a visit. “Any fitness level can do this because you are working alongside yourself, not competing against others or in a group setting,” Cunningham said. Those who are interested are invited to try their first workout for free. The location is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then again from 3 to 8 p.m. For more information, visit www.9Round.com/ MelbourneFLCitadelWay, call 321-355-5503 or head to the location’s Facebook page: 9Round Fitness – Melbourne, FL. Made in Brevard Expo showcases local manufacturing companies BY WENDY SCHEURING

Hundreds of Brevard County residents flocked to the Fifth Annual Made in Brevard Expo at the Radisson Resort at the Port in Cape Canaveral. Sponsored by the Regional Manufacturer’s Association of Florida’s Space Coast (MASC), an initiative of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC), the event May 3 showcased the latest products from Brevard’s manufacturing industry. Representatives from Lightwing Studios, the Florida Beer Company and Richard’s Paint Manufacturing talked about “locally made consumer products and how you can buy local,” according to the official Expo Guide. Other live tech talks discussed manufacturing talent, the new space age and transformational technology. Twenty-four Brevard manufacturing companies manned booths to showcase their wares, products, and technologies, and shared their knowledge with attendees. The Made in Brevard Expo also introduced the mobile CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear) Warning and Protection System, according to Jason Jones, business director of Sentry View Systems, Inc. “The Sentry Mobile line of mobile self-powered platforms allow for the rapid deployment of CBRNE, surveillance and ALPR,” according to the Sentry View System Inc.’s company literature. manufacturers the CBRNE, provides an innovative way to protect crowds and large populations from terrorist attacks. On the other end of the spectrum, a product for dogs called Swift Paws, founded by Meghan Wolfram and co-owned with John Ritter, is a new, healthy and safe way for dogs to get their exercise in their own backyards. Swift Paws currently is live on Kickstarter and already has raised $73,608 toward its original goal of $20,000 on the crowdfunding platform. The product will go into production in July and will be shipped to consumers in September. The only home-based business in the EDC — LightWing Studios, LLC, coowned by the husband and wife team of Patrick and Lyuba Pearce of Titusville — manufactures AxeShield. It is a washableprotection cover tailored for a wide-variety of guitars, bass guitars, violins

and amplifiers. “The covers take away 70 percent of humidity and save musicians $400 yearly in instrument maintenance,” said Patrick Pearce, who added that 40 percent of their sales are exports. Leaning to the esthetical side, Steven Slatem was on hand to launch Limellian Plaster, Stucco and Coatings, LLC’s new lime/ ceramic interior ceiling and wall texture coating plasters, according to the website Limellian.com. The company, which is based in Cape Canaveral, manufactures “limebased plaster, stucco and coatings,” in a variety of combinations with marble, quartz, coquina and cotton for the home’s interior. This gives it an exquisite feel and adds to the value of a property. The company also manufactures primers and paints for exteriors as well. Andrew Aldrin to present space lecture on July 12

BY KATIE PARSONS

Dr. Andrew “Andy” Aldrin’s path to space expertise has always been intertwined with entrepreneurship. His recognizable last name conjures up images of his famous father, Buzz Aldrin, but Andy’s space path has been more grounded. In the 1980s, he traveled to the then-Soviet Union as a graduate student to study the behind-the- scenes factors that boosted that nation in the “space race.” He says the lessons he learned then influenced how he looks at American advancement in space, including in entrepreneurship. “I believe very strongly

that Florida will be one of the key places for space entrepreneurship,” Aldrin said. “You have to go through Florida to get to space.” He will present a lecture on space entrepreneurship July 12 at FIT’s Center for Aviation and Innovation located at 1050 West NASA Blvd. in Melbourne. The presentation is part of the Florida Institute of Technology’s Lifelong Scholar Society lecture series. Throughout the year, 18 different lectures take place on select Thursday nights, followed by an open discussion on the topic at hand. Other topics in the series include virtual reality technology, hurricane science

and forecasts and how human factors affect safety. Now an associate professor at FIT, Aldrin’s office has memorabilia from his father’s space feats, including a mold of a print created from his dad’s moon boots. Photos on the walls document space firsts alongside family trips to the Galapagos Islands. Aldrin is a driving force behind a new space entrepreneurship program that will come to the Space Coast in the summer of 2019. The Buzz Aldrin Space Institute for Florida Tech’s graduate-level summer study program is designed to give up-and-coming space entrepreneurs the right footing to get their ideas off

of study, but Aldrin expects that most students will have an engineering or business management background. “The goal of that program is to create dynamic leaders for the companies already here and to also turn new space ideas into business,” Aldrin said. For those interested in hearing Dr. Aldrin’s July 12 lecture, The Lifelong Scholar Society costs $40 for VIERA VOICE Jill Blue Gaines a year’s membership and includes occasional dinner Dr. Andrew “Andy” Aldrin shows a mold of a print made by the moon celebrations.
