There could not be a better time to name Nana's House as the charity to benefit from the Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival this month. The faith-based charity takes in children as an alternative to placement in the state foster care system. The virtually all-vounteer effort is in the middle of construction of an eighthome community with a shared multipurpose building in West Melbourne to expand capacity to 40 children, and a number of the structures are being built by custom home builders who are part of building boom of homes and businesses in Viera. Also, the Nana's House mission is a favorite among donors, volunteers and church missions across the Viera/Suntree area. “We really want to blow the lid off anything we have done before to benefit the community,” said Jill BlueGaines, founder and CEO of the expo, marketing and media firm Bluewater Creative Group that publishes Viera Voice, sister newspaper Senior Life and its annual Boomer Guide. “We want people to enjoy coming around to all 36 artistic, creative scarecrows and schoolcrows on the mapped route, and ultimately we want people to buy these scarecrows for

park valued at $1,800 or a four-pack of tickets to LEGOLAND Florida. The second part of the event is the Harvest Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at The Avenue Viera, to which the scarecrows will be moved for display and put up for auction at the end of the event. The Nana's House scarecrow, named Nana Likes to Crow, tells the story of the charity's mission in more ways than one. First, it depicts a “Nana” scarecrow sitting in a chair with a child sitting on her lap in a loving embrace. “That's what makes this work, that our houseparents love these children and are totally committed volunteers with a passion to heal the children in their care,” said Kim Frodge, Nana's house founder and volunteer executive director. “We are so excited to be able to illustrate our mission personally to so many families on the Scarecrow Stroll and really excited to benefit our children with the proceeds of the scarecrow auction.”

Second, all of the materials used to make the completely-from-scratch creation were obtained at the Nana's House thrift cottages, located at 2540 Malabar Road and 2715 Garden Street in Malabar. “I didn't want to just illustrate the mission of Nana's House,” said Nana's House volunteer Melanie Delman, the artist who designed the Nana-andchild 'crow, ”but also promote the great thrift stores that help us to run the operations with no government assistance of any kind.” Third, the location of the Nana 'crow shines a light on the first builder to step forward and build one of the homes as a donation, Christopher Burton Luxury Homes, a popular builder of homes across Viera. The 'crow will be hosted at a Burton new home model in the Wyndham community in west Viera. Other donor builders of the nine structures, whose foundations are now being poured, include Stanley Homes, D&M Enterprise, LifeStyle Homes, MH Williams Construction and George Construction (three homes) and Beachland Construction. Viera to complain about the proposed interchange. About two dozen spoke out against the plan, citing concerns about increased traffic, accidents and noise. The interchange, a $14 million joint project between the state and The Viera Co., is meant to ease traffic tieups at the Fiske Boulevard and I-95 interchange to the north and the Wickham Road interchange to the south, FDOT planners say. Work could start in fall 2017 and the project, currently in its design stage, could wrap up 14 to 16 months later, Owen said. The Viera Co. is providing right-of-way for the project. The project also would

widen Viera Boulevard from two lanes to four lanes west of Tavistock Drive to west of Porada Drive and from east of Herons’ Landing to U.S. 1. The interchange would be the second built in Florida. Another Diverging Diamond Interchange is under construction at Interstate 75 and University Parkway in Sarasota, according to the website divergingdiamond. com. Others are planned in Fort Myers, Naples, Miami and Jacksonville. Some 69 Diverging Diamond Interchanges are either planned or under construction across the U.S. The first was built in Springfield, Mo. in 2009. VV

Stuffed animal clinic at Harvest Festival provides Teddy bear care BY MIKE GAFFEY

VanDeMark, noting that Wuesthoff Medical Center -Rockledge recently hosted a similar event. “This gives children an opportunity in a nonclinical setting to see what an examination would be like at a doctor’s office.” Dr. Jamie Burrows will be among the Wuesthoff physicians participating in the clinic. She’s hoping for a big turnout, thanks in part to the popularity of the Disney Junior show “Doc McStuffins,” in which 6-year-old Dottie “Doc” McStuffins cares for stuffed animals and toys in her playhouse clinic. “It should be an exciting and fun event,” Burrows said. The clinic is one of several free events that families can enjoy at the Harvest Festival. There is also the Zucchini 500 Race, live music by the Penny Creek Band and a children’s Mini-crow contest with prizes. Scarecrows from Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll will be on display and available for bidding to benefit the Nana’s House charity. VV For more event or vendor information, call 321-242-1235.

Kids will get a wellness card for their plush animal after the checkup, she said. The clinic gives doctors a chance to have a little fun and might even help calm kids’ fears of physicians and exams, VanDeMark said. “We want them to have positive experiences,” said

Mini-Crows are a hit at the Harvest Festival BY LINDA WIGGINS

The Mini-Crow division added last year to the Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival was a huge hit and this year promises to provide even more creative entertainment. Children who wish to build a scarecrow of their own and bring it at the start of the festival can win $100 in cash prizes. There is no entry fee. While traditional ’crows will be posted across the greater Viera/Suntree area from Oct. 6 through 20 and moved to the Harvest Festival, the Mini-Crows will be on display only at the Saturday, Oct. 22 event held at The

Avenue Viera’s Central Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Unlike the traditional scarecrows in the event, the Mini-Crows will not be auctioned for charity but remain the child's property. The Mini-Crow division was created to give children a chance to partake, Viera Voice publisher Jill Blue-Gaines said. Many of the children who took part are hard at work on this year's entry. “It was a lot of fun getting to go to the craft store and get a bunch of stuff to build it, and it was really exciting to win,” said Hailey Scalia, a student at Ralph Williams Elementary school in Viera East. Hailey won for her Star

Wars-themed Leia Crow, and this year she is working on a Harry Potter Crow. It was family fun that kept on giving, said Hailey's mom, Amy. “It was like at Christmas, you keep finding pine needles for months. We kept finding straw all over the place. But it brought back great memories and it was totally worth it. I feel really fortunate to live in a community that provides so many opportunities for the kids to become engaged and participate.” VV Rules and a registration form can be found online at vieravoice.com/scarecrowstroll. The Viera boys cross country team could be on the verge of another strong season, especially considering the top five runners are all running within 30 seconds of each other. BY CARL KOTALA

While the Viera girls cross country team is working hard to take care of a little unfinished business this season, the boys team is looking to maintain its recent success with a new coach … who was one of them not that long ago. Jon Campbell, who graduated from Viera in 2012, is the new boys coach, replacing Ron Abel, who had to leave because of a job transfer. “He did a very good job of building up the Viera boys cross country program,” Campbell said, “It’s definitely changed … as far as the caliber of athletes that we have. I’m very happy to carry the torch for him.”

VIERA VOICE Courtesy Kate Howick

The Viera High girls team has a lot of young runners who are continuing to improve throughout the year as they prepare for the postseason.

The Hawks, who finished 11th in the state Class 3A meet last season, have a realistic chance at winning the district and regional titles this season thanks to a group of runners that run very close together. Viera’s top five of seniors Josh Dean, Alex Krestan and Colin Quigley, junior Jack Gillespie and sophomore Andy Martinez are running times that are within 30 seconds of each other, which can be very advantageous. “The team’s doing really well,” Krestan said. “We’re all dropping our times steadily. I feel like we can get to states.” Viera’s girls team would love to join the boys at the state meet, especially after coming so close last season. “Last year, we fell on some

late-season injuries and illnesses that kind of came back to haunt us,” Viera girls coach Kate Howick said. “We didn’t finish as well as we would have liked last year. “Our goal this year hasn’t changed. We’re eying a district runner-up spot (behind Merritt Island). We keep improving every year at regionals and last year we were within three spots of advancing to states. That was tough because those three spots were so close together.” The good thing for the Hawks is that top runner Abbi Liddle has gotten off to a strong start, even posting a new personal best. “I’m about where I was last year when we finished, but I’m trying to get to the 19’s,” Liddle said. “I’m at 21:23

possible — you might think the Viera High boys and girls golf teams might be in more of a rebuilding mode this season. Think again. If anything, the Hawks are making plans to be back in Howie-in-the-Hills to play at the Mission Inn and Resort Oct. 25 and 26 in the Class 3A state tournament. “Our team is young this year, but we show a lot of potential,” Viera senior Samantha Brimhall said. “I think our girls definitely have some strong capabilities and I think we can possibly go all the way this year and win states, but we’ll definitely have to work hard.” Brimhall, who won a state title with Viera in 2014, isn’t

the only one who thinks the Hawks can be special this season. With returner Trinity Falzone and newcomers like Mary Kate Smith, Manon Donche-Gay and Briana Gabe, plus Dianna Johnson, Madison Whitlock and Melissa Luciani in the mix, the Hawks expect to be quite formidable once again. “I’m excited,” Viera girls coach Greg Ford said. “I think we can achieve great things. Our goals haven’t changed. It’s still to get to the state tournament. It’s always been my belief that you can’t win it unless you’re there. “We’ve won eight district (titles) in a row. We’d like to continue that streak and then get through the

right now.” If the Hawks are going to make it to the state meet, the rest of their runners are going to have to close the gap between Liddle and the rest of her teammates. Fortunately, the Hawks are already seeing improvement from sophomore Sammie Pippett, junior Taylor Seely, senior Raena Karl and junior Claire Mitchell. Liddle, Karl and junior Melinda Schmitz are co-captains. If everything goes right for the girls, there could be two Viera teams at the state meet this season. In the meantime, the 45-year-old Davis will continue to balance coaching Siegemund and Sitak with his job as the Suntree Country Club pro and the owner of two Nature’s Table restaurants, including one in Suntree. “As my friends have told me, I’ve done this backwards,” Davis said. “Most people come right off of playing and go out and start coaching players. I did (the) reverse. I got myself established, got a couple of restaurants, became the head pro at Suntree and created a

good team there. “Then, obviously by fortune, I was contacted by my buddy who was the main coach for Artem. When (Artem) went full-time doubles (in Jan. 2015), he called me to come in and be the doubles specialist on the team. “And of course, once you’re out there, you’re out there. It’s wonderful. I love it. It’s nice to throw a change into something you already enjoy. I’ve been blessed enough to be able to teach. Now you’re able to teach at that level and with that level of player. It creates all kinds of things I can bring home to the club. It’s really a great thing.” VV

VIERA VOICE Carl Kotala

While the Holy Trinity boys cross country team is in a rebuilding mode, the girls should be ready to make another run to the state meet. BY CARL KOTALA

One team has the state’s top-ranked runner and a legitimate shot at a top-five finish at the state meet. The other has a lot of young runners who could be capable of pulling off something big in the years to come. So in summing up the Holy Trinity cross country program right now, you could say the Tigers have not only an exciting present, but also a bright future. The top runner in the program, by far, is senior

Samantha Folio. Not only is she ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, she has also been a team captain since her freshman year, so she knows how to lead a team. The Tigers, ranked eighth in the state, lost three of their top four runners from last season, but have eight runners with some varsity experience. Joining Folio are eighthgraders Brooke Sibiter and Alexa Baker, freshman Amelia Anello, sophomore Sasha Wiechecki Vergara and seniors Abby McHenry, Mackenzie Wills and Claire Layton.

“I think we’re capable of a lot more than we’ve shown,” Folio said. “We just need to get into the groove and then we’ll be getting better. “… I think we’ll place pretty good at state. We’re definitely going to make it and we’re going to show that we’re still good.” The boys, meanwhile, are trying to work their way back after losing 27 of 30 runners following the dismissal of then-coach Doug Butler two years ago. Now, coach Scott Baker has a lot of young talent to work with that could have

the Tigers back among the state’s elite one day. “It’s going to take them a year or two, but they’re going to do really well in the future,” Baker said. “I’m optimistic about the boys. They’re already as good or better than they were last year, and it’s the beginning of the season.” Led by Bryan Baker, a freshman running cross country for the first time, the Tigers aren’t kidding when they say they have a young team. Cole Hewett and Mark Adams are seventh graders, while Walker Johnson and Jack Sattile are in the eighth grade. Chris Selby is a freshman and Josh Knight is a junior. “They’re not just young, they actually have the ability to run,” Scott Baker said. “It’s just a matter of time.” The key right now, Baker said, is making sure the young runners enjoy themselves this season. Bryan Baker said the team has already formed a bond. “We’ve got a really young team,” he said. “We feel as the years go on, we’ll get closer and closer and that will lead toward more success.” VV For separate stories on the Holy Trinity boys and girls cross country teams, go to vieravoice.com

Holy Trinity golf teams eyeing district tournament BY CARL KOTALA

on to the regionals. Of course, a trip to the state isn’t out of the question, either. “In order for us to make it to state, our kids are going to have to play their ‘A’ game, every one of them, which they’re capable of doing,” Holy Trinity boys coach Ron Benfield said. “I’ve got four kids who are capable of shooting in the 70s.” Chief among them are top players Brandon Schwab and Tom Baez, who have both shown a lot of improvement since last season. “I would say my long game has definitely been a lot better,” said Baez, a senior. “I’m starting to drive the ball over 300 yards, which is a huge improvement. I’m starting to consistently shoot lower scores.” Other top players on the boys team are sophomore Daniel Muniz and Ludovico Martinenghi, a junior foreign exchange student from Spain who has been among the Tigers' most consistent players. Junior Carter Thomas has been playing No. 5 for Holy Trinity while seventh-grader Cody Royston is loaded with potential. The Tigers will host the district and regional tournament at Suntree Country Club this year, which should help Holy Trinity. “This is going to be a completely different environment (which should give us an) advantage, for sure, knowing the layout of the course,” Baez said. “Most of the time, when we go to Orlando (for regionals), we have no idea the roll of the green, or how fast the fairways are.” On the girls side, Chuck Goldfarb and Ben Rotgers, a teaching pro at the U.S. 1 Golf Center in Rockledge, have taken over the program and made an immediate impact. “What’s different is we’re

practicing a lot more,” said No. 1 player Enya Torsney. “We’re a lot more dedicated. Our team is a lot closer together.” Joining Torsney in what she called a “pretty strong lineup” are sophomores Grace Dance and Hannah Gunderson, senior Lela Gunderson, sophomore Soi Choi, eighth-grader Ellen Choi, seniors Sabrina Webb, Cindy Hall and Annika Schliesman, eighth-grader Avery Kenney, seventhgrader Emily Rotgers and junior Emily Sheahan. Goldfarb, a legendary Hall of Fame baseball coach and athletic administrator, is enjoying his new gig. “I’m just having a blast,” he said. “These girls are so nice, they’re coachable, so much fun and they’ve got great personalities. The whole situation for me, being retired and doing this is just perfect.” VV

No. 5 and the Hawks have quite a talented group to challenge the state’s best. Of course, a big key to booking a trip back to Howie-in-the-Hills will be the younger players, who will need to grow up quickly in the time between now and the start of the postseason, where Viera’s main competition is expected to come from Vero Beach. However, in Sierota and Greek, they have the perfect example of talented, hardworking players who know what it takes to succeed. Both players played in a number of tournaments during the summer — including the state junior amateur — but Sierota also qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur, which took place in July in Ooltewah, Tenn. “Calvin and Tyler, they know they’re the anchors now,” Bentley said. “They’ve got to pick up the slack of the younger people. They’re the leaders now.” VV For separate stories on the Viera boys and girls golf teams, go to vieravoice.com

As we enter the final stretch of the political election season, one of our members was a long-time Washington D.C. insider. Working at the Security and Exchange Commission for 40 years and achieving the position and level of Senior Executive Service, Wilson Butler was responsible for directing the SEC’s Insider Trading program. Coming face-to-face with individuals whose intent was to defraud investors by violating federal securities laws, Butler directed one of the SEC’s largest workforce departments. He had primary responsibility for processing and ensuring compliance to the filing requirements of registration, mergers and acquisitions. Wilson was the SEC’s records expert and one of the original architects to design and implement the Electronic Data Gathering and Retrieval (EDGAR) system, a major program and step forward for data collection. For his years of service, Butler received the “Distinguish Service Award." After retiring from government service, he became active in volunteering

and established the Wilson A. Butler Academy to bridge the achievement gap for underserved students, which teaches force and motion STEM concepts. He is an avid golfer and active Viera East Men's Golf Association member. On Sept. 8, the VEMA event was a four-man team with stableford scoring. The team of Gary Shiffrin, Ted Edlow, James Alt, Paul Winter finished first. Bob David, Steve Wing, John Gulla and a blind pick were second. Dennis Lamb, Jack Webb, Dave Hogan and Kerin Vetter were third. Gary Shiffrin on No. 4, Ed Raleigh on No. 7, Dale Ziegler on No. 13 and Jim Robinson on No. 16. VEMA plays competitive events every Thursday at the Viera East Golf Club. Members are excited to resume play on the new Tiff Eagle Greens and riding in the new golf carts with the GPS device providing player yardages, bunker layout and other information. SCHOOL

Viera High students, Legacy Club members hit it off

BY CARL KOTALA

Derek Perdomo is a member of The Academy for Communication, Art + Design at Viera High School. But on this day, it was Perdomo who was doing the teaching. And his student was a 64-year-old man from Satellite Beach who was learning how to move the icons around on his iPhone. “I felt a little nervous,” said Bob Commons, who was working with Perdomo. “All of these young folks are good with computers and I … I fumble through it. I’m OK. I need a little bit of help. So I decided to come here and utilize the Legacy Club.” Formed three years ago, the Legacy Club is a free program offered by Brevard Public Schools for residents age 55 and over. Members receive free or reduced tickets to sporting or theater events at Brevard Public Schools. There are also lectures and classes … like this one, which is known as Tech Talk.

Those classes are offered once every month at Viera High and once every other month at Melbourne High. For both the students and the seniors, the class can have an impact far greater than the subject matter. “They get one-on-one tutoring, so it’s not like you’re sitting at a Verizon class,” said Ginger Blair, who is the Communications Program coordinator for the school district and also serves as the Legacy Club coordinator. “They’re getting more personalized service, but they’re (also) getting a chance to talk to kids and the kids are getting a chance to talk to the seniors. “It’s been really great because I think it gives them a chance to see a side of the students and the students a chance to see a side of the seniors that they might not know.” There are 5,000 Legacy Club members in Brevard and the Tech Talk classes are among the most popular. Perdomo, a junior, enjoyed getting to work with the

Legacy Club. “I think it actually does help out with the older population who aren’t as used to this as we are,” Perdomo said. “We were born with these phones. We’ve basically lived with these. … It makes me feel really good to help people out.”

Commons has used his membership largely to get into sporting events — including many games in which the Viera Hawks are playing. “We think it’s the best kept secret for entertainment in Brevard,” he said. “It’s so inexpensive, whether you pay $2 or whether it’s free.”

Holy Trinity looking for ‘right fit’ for school president BY CARL KOTALA

From establishing an academic merit scholarship program to bringing in academic coaches for students in need and even adding more classes on both campuses for those who are “math precocious,” James Landi has accomplished a lot in his first year as the Headmaster at Holy Trinity. Now, Landi and the school’s Board of Trustees plan to add something else: A succession plan for the school’s leadership that will keep Holy Trinity “strong and vibrant” for years to come. To that end, the search has begun to hire a school president. “We’re hoping to find someone who knows the school really well and who has strong relationships not only in the school community, but also Brevard County … a well-respected individual who can advance the cause of the school to a wider group of people in the county,” Landi said. Though he has enjoyed a great deal of success in his short time at Holy Trinity, Landi has told the board he cannot commit to decades of service. He will turn 71 next month. In addition to taking over some of the school’s fundraising efforts, the president would handle more of the everyday operational tasks while Landi would continue to concentrate on overseeing the academic program. Landi would report to the president. There is no timetable to fill the position. “The board has appointed a search committee and as (board chair) Dana Kilborne says, we have the luxury of time,” Landi said. “I’m not going anywhere. It may take

months. It may take a year. We don’t know. “But it’s an attractive position for somebody who fits (what we’re looking for). It’s got to be a good fit both for the school and for the individual.” While the search goes on, Landi will continue making improvements on the academic side. The school’s Academic Merit Scholarship program added 12 students who might not have otherwise been able to afford to attend Holy Trinity. Academic coaches have been brought in throughout the entire system to help students who are having minor struggles. Additional math classes have been added on both campuses for students who have shown a natural aptitude for the subject. Plans for this year include adding additional staff in advanced math at both the upper and lower school and extending the contact hours in the STEAM program on the lower campus. The upper school will add academic coaches in English and Social Sciences with an emphasis on writing. “It’s an aggressive and ambitious program,” Landi said. “It will be paid for by additional fundraising. Last year, we surprised everybody by raising $640,000. This year, (we hope to) raise a million.” So while the search goes on to find a president, Landi will continue to serve as the stabilizing force behind the school. While he may not be able to commit to decades of service, he’s still having fun. “The idea is as long as I have an important role to play at the school, I’m going to be here,” Landi said. VV

He's back and he loves to quack BY LINDA WIGGINS

He's back. And his favorite word rhymes with back — as in quack. Sergio the duck returned to Jana Gabrielski's sixth-grade class at Suntree Elementary School. The duck who thinks he is a student — or that his fellow classmates are ducks — spent the summer at a favorite graduating student's home and returned to greet the new members of Sergio's Squad, the team name for students who volunteer to come early and stay late seeing to their feathered friend's care.

“He's kind of bitey, but it doesn't really hurt,” sixthgrader Ryan Rinconnes said. Nibbling is Sergio's way of expressing affection, Gabrielski said, smoothing out his loved one's feathers that just happen to be in the form of a shirt. “He's like the mayor, strutting and bobbing and checking everyone out, saying hello,” Gabrielski said. One of the reasons Sergio captured the hearts of children and the imagination of the media is that he roams the classroom and sometimes the outside corridors as he pleases,

thanks to a specially fitted diaper to prevent accidents. “He grew over the summer so we've got a larger one on order,” Gabrielski said. Other times, he hangs out in a specially made outdoor pen with two kiddie pools that the Squad keeps clean. Part of the reason for Sergio's unusual bond — he likes to be held, loves to be hugged and adores being scratched — is that he was the only one of 40 eggs to hatch in a spring class project. With no actual mother duck, he imprinted on Gabrielski and will follow her everywhere. With no other feathered siblings, he believes the students are his fellow hatchlings. Why is it noteworthy that a duck would quack? He barely made a sound through the end of the last school year, making it impossible to tell whether Sergio was actually a male or a female. Females have a higher pitched voice and only the males give a throaty croak. Once he matured during the summer, Sergio's voice matured as well, and he grew a tell-tale curly drake feather on his behind. No need to rename him Sheila. VV

MEET YOUR LOCA

AND EXPERIENCE A

BY LINDA WIGGINS

How would you like a job where every day was Friday? You work one day and you have the next two days off? Sound like a dream? Then you might want to become a firefighter paramedic like the ones who work in stations 47, 48 and 80 in Viera and Suntree. Of course, there's always that whole risking your life thing to consider. Maybe there's a reason you get two days off after one day on. You can meet your firefighters from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 at the station closest to you, as the three stations host a fun fest with free refreshments, bounce house, face painting and more. You can tour the station house, check out huge fire engine rigs, and children can spray a massive water hose of great force. The educational events mark Fire Prevention Week and this year's focus is on updating household fire and smoke alarms. Consider the fact that one day is not eight hours, but 24. There's a reason it is called a fire house. It's a place VIERA VOICE Linda Wiggins Allen Webb of Station 48 C Shift trains on where firefighters the 100-foot bucket truck newly moved live for an entire day, including a night's sleep to the station. if you can get it. “We thought this would be a great opportunity for the public to learn about what life is like on the job, as well as an opportunity to share education about staying safe,” said Tom Neidert, district chief for Brevard County Fire Rescue District 45 and organizer of the events. Like the firefighters, district chiefs work the A, B or C shift that spans 24 hours. The local DC works out of Station 47 in Viera East, and covers the Viera/Suntree stations and beyond. They coordinate the responses to emergencies, especially when multiple stations and specialty equipment or specifically trained staff is required. While the three stations are assigned to the The October 8 event Suntree/Viera area, they at each station is are all part of Brevard County services and “an opportunity to share may be dispatched education about where needed in staying safe.” unincorporated Brevard or to a —District Chief municipality to assist its Tom Neidert fire rescue efforts. The Suntree/Viera area is typically seen as a great area to work in public service. The resources are good, crime is low, facilities tend to be state of the art, families are middle to upper income and education is prized. However, the sentiment is not so in fire service. A growing number of nursing homes in the Viera/Suntree area virtually guarantee you won't sleep through a night. Rookies are common, and firefighters with time on the job are rare in these parts. This is beyond the fact that gray hair is rare in the profession in general. Firefighters must remain fit and pass regular fitness tests that include the ability to carry a human body from peril. Many of those who stay on the job longer

Station 47 is one of the busiest, answering 3,000 calls a year. Many calls are to nursing homes, but also to crashes on Interstate 95. It was the first station built in Viera. Station 49 will be the newest, planned for west Viera in the coming years.

Station 48 is known for its specialization in hazardous materials and special operations like high-rise rope rescues, trench and confined space rescues and training of other stations' staff on all of the above. Staff was reduced from nine to six members per shift in the past two years despite growth in west Viera. Station 80 is also extremely busy, while at the same time dealing with a reduction in force starting this month from nine to five members per shift. Along with the staff, they also lost a popular rig, nicknamed The Tiller, capable of accessing small spaces and tall places.

than a few years begin to look toward the mental finish line of 25 years of service for a pension. If you do see a wrinkle or two, it is likely on a lieutenant, one per station per shift. While no firefighter will say it on record, the pay is low when the risk and lifestyle inconvenience is factored in. They frequently count on a spouse to pitch in enough income to afford a home and to raise a family. It's tough for them to help out with child care or transportation to school or extracurricular activities because they literally are out of pocket for entire 24-hour periods and cannot leave the job, even in a pinch, as with most mortals. They can never count on a particular day off, holidays included. They work every third day into infinity, except if they have put in for a shift trade, and only if it has been approved. During this 24 hours, they truly live with a second family. They work from 7 a.m. to 7 a.m. the next day, always with the same coworkers who share that shift. Anything that

would be found in a home is at the station. A kitchen, big family-size table, workout gear, big screen TV surrounded by recliners for each person, and a large common bedroom, the beds partitioned off with closets. They take turns planning menus and cooking, and the humor is nonstop, the bluer the language the better, often at the good-natured expense of one another. It truly is a family, after all. If typical family members would figuratively lay down their life for a brother or sister, in the case of the firefighter paramedics of stations 47, 48 and 80, it is literally a day in the life.

Yourvoice What was your favorite Halloween candy & favorite costume, store bought or homemade? PHOTOS BY BOB PARENTE

Lizi Huy “Chocolate anything — to the point I take from my kids' candy haul. My favorite costume was a witch, I spent many a year as a witch.”

Stephanie Maynor “Fun-size peanut M&M’s, great for snacking. And my favorite Halloween costume was a cat. It was quick, easy, inexpensive and could be made at the last minute.”

Ron Buford “Candy corn and the little Snickers squares, not the bars, easier to keep more in your pocket. The costume was a “'70s Pimp” the one you have to ask “where does the battery go?”

Lourie Koenigbass “Caramel or anything with it. Nice and chewy. My favorite costume was the Swiss Miss girl. I even had a basket of marshmallows that I would throw at people for “Trick or Treat.”

Jon Loa “The old school Superman, you know blue tights and red shorts with belt. And for candy, the Nestlé Crunch bars, not Hershey versions.”

Halloween horror extended to November From the original superstitious rituals to a community-based celebration, Halloween marks the transition between brighter summer days to dark, cold winter nights. Even though there was a change in tone, scary and sometimes grotesque are still part of the celebration making up the many Halloween Horror parties around us. This year, the horror of Halloween is sneaking into November and making it onto the ballot. Among the horrors that we will find printed on the ballot, one is in the form of a ballot measure that the Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente described as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” in her dissenting opinion. That measure is Amendment 1, entitled Rights of Electricity Consumers Regarding Solar Energy Choice, considered “misleading not because of what it says, but what it fails to say.” Justice Pariente identified Amendment 1 as a “pro-utility amendment” and concluded that “clearly, this is an amendment geared to ensure nothing changes with respect to the use of solar energy in Florida — it is not a ‘pro-solar’ amendment.”

If Amendment 1 is not a pro-solar amendment, what is it then?

Simply put, it is an anti-freemarket proposal that “allows state and local government to impose all manner of fees and regulations on solar users” while preventing the use of “decentralized rooftop solar electricity [which would] provide net benefits by reducing the stress on the grid during the daytime, cutting

BEYOND the CURB Marcia Booth

President & Founder, 3Rs and Beyond

expenditures on fossil fuels, and making privately funded clean energy available to all” (Neville Williams). In Florida, only electric utilities can sell electricity so “you can't arrange to buy power from a third-party solar contractor” (motherjones. com) and utility companies want to keep it that way.

Amendment 1 pretends to be a pro-solar amendment, when in fact it is not even a ghost of one.

Amendment 1 also pretends to be about protecting consumer rights to own or lease solar equipment, when in reality consumers already have that right afforded through the Florida Constitution and other statutes and regulations. Amendment 1 claims to better protect consumer rights but, according to Stephen A. Smith, the executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, “the only people [Amendment 1] would protect are utility shareholders” by preventing non-utility companies from providing solar-generated electricity directly to customers (cleanenergy.org). As you can see, the language that will be on the ballot is scarily misleading: “This amendment establishes a right under Florida's constitution for consumers to own or lease solar equipment installed on their property to generate

electricity for their own use. State and local governments shall retain their abilities to protect consumer rights and public health, safety and welfare, and to ensure that consumers who do not choose to install solar are not required to subsidize the costs of backup power and electric grid access to those who do.”

So whose idea was it to put forth such wicked amendment?

Amendment 1 is sponsored by Consumers for Smart Solar, Inc. and the list of its proponents includes the Florida Electric Cooperatives Association, Inc.; Florida Power & Light Company; Tampa Electric Company; Duke Energy Florida; and Gulf Power Company. Opponents of the amendment include Floridians for Solar Choice, Inc.; Environment Florida, Inc.; The Environmental Confederation of Southwest Florida, Inc.; Florida Solar Energy Industries Association; and Florida Energy Freedom, Inc. With the support for good solar policy displayed by 73 percent of voters in this past primary election, Pamela Goodman, president of the League of Women Voters of Florida, warns that “in November, the utilities are hoping to ride on this wave of solar support — but they are also counting on voters to ignore the fine print” and fall under their spell. So, voters, beware. If you support solar, don’t get tricked. Vote NO on Amendment 1 this November. V V Email Marcia Booth at Marcia@3RsAndBeyond.org

Suntree Elementary School lost a sweet teacher when Maxine Lauer retired, a reputation that surely had more to do with being loved by students and parents rather than her penchant for preparing treats. Lauer has since turned her hobby into a sweet new home-based business. A baking enthusiast since childhood, Lauer launched Chips Galore Cookies and More from her Lake Washington-area residence about 18 months ago. And she’s watched her customer list grow since then. “I was always the Cookie Mom,” said Lauer, who taught for 34 years, including the past 23 years at Suntree. “I provided cookies for the college dorm and the apartments.” After receiving encouragement and prodding from her son and daughter-inlaw, Lauer decided to turn her hobby into a cottage industry. Today, she makes custommade cookies, cakes, cupcakes and other desserts for all occasions. ”Everything is freshly made to order from scratch,” said Lauer, who takes orders by phone or at her website and Facebook page. Her signature Chips Galore cookie is a chocoholics’s dream, with milk chocolate, semisweet chocolate and butterscotch chips crammed into each regular-sized cookie. Lauer also prepares 14-inch-wide cookie cakes and such treats as macaroons, shortbread, Sugar Cookie Cut Outs, Dipped Oreos covered

in sprinkles or drizzle, and Teenies — cookies sold at a minimum of two dozen a box. Customers also can find some gluten-free and sugar-free items on Lauer’s menu. Lauer’s cookie cakes and iced sugar cookies are her biggest sellers, but she’s also in demand for her weddingthemed treats. “I’ll take cupcakes and I turn them into an engagement ring or shape them into a wedding gown,” she said. Lauer usually requires about a week’s advance notice to prepare a special order, but she can do a quick cookie cake in a pinch. Customers can pick up their orders at her house, or have them delivered for a fee. Business is good, but not overwhelming. And that’s how

Lauer likes it. “I want to be busy but I don’t want to get so busy,” said Lauer, who wants to have free time to spend with her five grandchildren, the newest of which arrived Aug. 20. “If I had to live off my earnings, I would not be living. Fortunately, my husband is not retired. “My name is getting out there because I’m getting more new customers. But I’m also getting a lot of repeat customers, which is just as good because it tells me they’re happy with the product.” VV To order by phone, call 321259-2897. The Suntree Rotary Club has added a new charity to its fold, but the mission is one they have supported for years. Proceeds from the annual Great Tastes at Suntree from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at Suntree Country Club will be split three ways. Gabrielle Place is the new name of the Space Coast Center for Mothers with Children. Located in the Suntree area west of U.S. 1, north of Pineda Causeway, the charity helps homeless women with children become stable and productive, and seeks to break the cycle of homelessness by teaching children healthy life skills. Dozens of restaurants will vie for People’s Choice bragging rights and bring their top dishes for attendees to sample while listening to live music and taking part in a variety of games and activities geared to both adults and youngsters. Take Stock in Children is the second charity to benefit. Run by Brevard School District's Brevard Schools Foundation, the nonprofit helps students earn scholarships for higher education, especially those in need. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida north Melbourne Temple Terrace location is the third charity. The club gives children a safe place away from home to hang out in a positive environment, and physical activities to challenge their minds and bodies. Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey was keynote speaker at an event kickoff breakfast Sept. 16 at Suntree Coluntry Club. “Investing in children is one of the greatest ways to grow a great adult,” Ivey said. “If you don't, the reverse will result.” VV Suntree Rotary is seeking businesses to sponsor Great Tastes for $500, which includes 10 tickets to the event. Tickets are $30 each. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 321-890-4301.

Delta Life Fitness gives women a workout worthy of a Marine BY MIKE GAFFEY

Delta Life Fitness, a health club franchise that gives women a calorie-clobbering, Marine Corps-style workout, has opened in Viera. The 4,000-square-foot facility at 6729 Colonnade Ave., Suite 119, had a soft opening Sept. 6, welcoming more than 80 members who signed up during a preopening campaign, owneroperator-instructor Erin Roche said. “Delta Life Fitness is designed for empowering women for lifelong change,” said Roche, a Viera resident whose husband, Ryan, is a combat-disabled Marine veteran. “We believe women are the matriarch of the family and the matriarch of the world. We believe everything great starts with them, so any facility that empowers women where the catalyst is health and fitness is awesome.” Instructors guide clients though a 30-minute workout class that combines bodytoning resistance and fatburning cardio exercises, Roche said. The new-to-Brevard franchise’s trademark “Tone and Torch” exercise program

is scientifically adapted for women from Marine Corpsstyle group fitness training, Roche said. Women of all fitness levels can participate in the same group workout, where they can control their own intensity level, she added. “We’re seeing results that are blasting 400 to well over 1,000 calories from a 30-minute workout,” Roche said. ”And the burn continues on for hours and hours after the workout.” All classes involve interval training and multiple stations, and clients use a variety of exercise equipment such as kettlebells and weight bars, Roche said. “It’s like circuit training that changes every day,” she said. “You never see the same workout more than once in six months.” Classes are at 5:15, 6:15, 8 and 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and 8 and 9 a.m. Saturday, general manager Jen Helms said. Wednesdays and Sundays are reserved for consultations and appointments, she said. There is also a supervised area for children during the 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. weekday classes and

Saturday morning classes, Helms said. Delta Life doesn’t charge a client who misses a class, Roche said. “We all understand life,” she said, “and this is all about empowering women for life, not punishing them because life gets in the way.” The franchise started out in Texas in 2009 as a workoutin-the-park program, then evolved into Delta Life Fitness when it became a concept for women only. Today, locations stretch from Florida to California. The closest Delta Fitness to the Viera franchise is in Daytona Beach, Roche said. The franchise's name is derived from the Greek letter "Delta," which means “change,” Helms explained. “It’s change-your-life fitness,” Helms said. “It’s not a workout to get to a scale on Monday. It’s not just to get fit for weekend sports. This is a life change and empowerment program in which fitness becomes the catalyst for good health along with the environment of positivity that you see here.” VV For more information, go to deltalifefitnessviera.com or call 321-750-7113.

during regular business hours. Born in Daytona Beach, Conrader’s roots in the Melbourne area run deep, said his wife Robin Conrader. “He went to the old Melbourne Elementary School at one time. His dad wired it once. And I believe he went to Mel High, but he was not a graduate,’’ she said.

A sign painter and home contractor by trade, Conrader returned to painting after a long hiatus as a way to celebrate and generate interest in the U.S. Space Program, she said. “Back in the '90s he had done Florida nature and beach scenes, but he just quit. He used to say he couldn’t decide between painting space or painting fish. I’m glad he chose space,’’ she said. Coming back to the ‘Wet on Wet’ style of oil painting, partially inspired by the images from the Hubble, was Conrader's way of doing his part to generate interest and enthusiasm in the space program, she said. “He really felt that the space program and NASA have lost a little bit of its ‘pow’ and he was sorry that was happening, but then there was interest with all these Hubble’s photographs and he was grateful for that. “His paintings were inspired by the Hubble but they were from his imagination. He didn’t want to immolate any particular planet or a particular place because if somebody knew about it they could criticize that it wasn’t quite right. That’s why he did most of it from his imagination but based it on visual. He would see something in the gases from the Hubble, and he would be inspired to see if he could create it and he usually did. He would take some of those techniques and he would combine them for his own interpretation,’’ she said. And that interpretation of space was both detailed and ‘realistic,’ although created from fantasy. “People would ask them when they came up: ‘Did you take that picture?’ and he would sit there and tell them, it’s not a picture, it’s an oil painting but it’s kind of hard to get out there. “When the kids came by — he loved the kids, especially those that expressed an interested in space — he would tell them that he left his spaceship parked around the back,’’ Robin Conrader said.

Charlie Conrader's paintings offer different views of space.

“Charlie was a very unique and fun individual. Even after being diagnosed… he was still determined to move ahead with his (2016) exhibition plans. The passion for his artwork could be felt while speaking to him on the phone,” said Lynne Brezina, art services manager for Brevard Cultural Alliance, who had worked with Conrader on a 2012 exhibit. “Every artist has their own style especially when it comes to portraying the universe. Charlie’s work was as realistic as space art can be,’’ she said. Charlie may have left this Earth, but thank goodness he left other worlds for us to enjoy forever, Robin Conrader said. “I was always amazed at one he did, he was so talented in just about everything he picked up. I always used to use this phrase ‘They say aliens walk among us.' I always used to tease him and look at one of his paintings and say ‘Phone home,’ (from the old ET movie).” VV For information call 321433-7373 or go to facebook. com/charlie.conrader, easternflorida.edu/planet, EFSC Planetarium and Observatory, 1519 Clearlake Rd., Cocoa. The peregrine falcon is a crow-sized bird of prey, a raptor. Its black cap of feathers resembles a helmet. Located nearly worldwide but not in New Zealand, peregrine land habitats span from the Arctic tundra to the tropics and increasingly to urban areas. According to size, the female is bigger. A male, female and chick are called a tiercel, falcon and eyas, respectively. Mating occurs for life and in the same territory yearly. One unique mating ritual encounters the male passing prey with its talons to the female when she is flying upside down. Nests are often scraped depressions on cliff ledges, but tall buildings and bridges are adequate. Lifespan is around 15.5 years. Seemingly, the fastest animal on earth is the peregrine. True, the cheetah, the fastest land animal, runs 70 to 75 miles per hour for short distances, and the peregrine flies slower at 65 to 70 miles per hour. However, the peregrine executes a dive (a hunting stoop) at more than 200 miles per hour. Diurnal, the peregrine hunts during daytime; quarries include many birds, especially pigeons and doves. Large eyes provide excellent vision and can keep track of three moving objects simultaneously. Long wings which are thin and tapered enable high speed and rapid change of direction. To attain height to circle and survey prey below, it utilizes wing power instead of soaring in air currents like some species. When diving, it kills or stuns in midair with action from clenched talons and a notched beak which is capable of breaking necks. Actually, eagles trying to raid nests have been killed by

peregrines. Sometimes, falcons are confused with hawks. Hawks are generally larger, slower and mainly use their talons to kill. Historically, the peregrine was called the duck hawk. Actually, falcons are related to hawks and eagles, but closest to parrots. Falconry is hunting with trained birds of prey (instinctive hunters), such as falcons and hawks. The peregrine is extremely desirable. It is eager, captures in midair and easily trained. It has been used in hunting for more than 3,000 years, although falconry has declined with the popularity of firearms. In the Middle Ages, kings selected gyrfalcons, the largest falcon, and princes handled the peregrine. Even Shakespeare was a falconer and mentioned it in his plays. Today, captive breeding produces hardy, skilled hybrids for falconry; fortunately, wild falcons are sought mostly for genetic diversity. Besides hunting, the peregrine is utilized to scare birds away to avoid birdplane strikes. During World War II, it intercepted homing pigeons. National conservation efforts (also worldwide) rescued the declining peregrine. Banning pesticides, captive breeding, reintroduction efforts and nesting protection during the breeding season influenced this rebound. During fall migration, the peregrine graces the Florida sky again! VV

Never underestimate the power of cute. The Viera Voice Scarecrow Stroll & Harvest Festival promises to blow up Facebook once again from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at The Avenue Viera. Harmony Farms donated actual saddles for the hay bales, which make for even more totes adorbs photos of cute kids riding horsey hay bales. You once had a friend; he is dead. What caused it? Do we know why? Our friend, the Indian River Lagoon Is dying the death of a thousand cuts. A hundred years, a thousand years or perhaps yesterday Our friend will die. Stand on the Eau Gallie Causeway bridge, look over the side, take a deep breath, what do you see. Think about it, what did the Indian River Lagoon look like 50 years ago? What will it look like 50 years from today? It's time to ask yourself, is our friend — the Indian River Lagoon dying? If your gut is telling you yes, then it's time to invest into changing the IRL's downward path. Are you going to help your friend? With dipping dissolved oxygen levels throughout the lagoon and high water temperatures, the lagoon is changing different shades of brown and green. Fish kills are continuing; dolphins, manatees, and pelicans are still dying; seagrass is struggling, and the algae family is blooming. Are you going to help your friend? Take the time now to invest in the Indian River Lagoon's future for our property values, our tourism industry and our fishing/recreational industry. Our friend, the Indian River Lagoon is dying, will it take us all down with it?. VV Smith, founder of the nonprofit Anglers for Conservation, urges voters to approve the half-cent sales tax on the Nov. 8 ballot, added by unanimous vote by the Brevard County Commission. The purpose is to raise money for improvements to the health of the Indian River Lagoon.

Grief counselor pens mystery novel BY MIKE GAFFEY

One of Dr. John Baggett’s last books explored the mystery of faith. His new novel is simply an oldfashioned mystery. The Viera resident and retired Methodist pastor’s latest work, “Desperate Amends,” tells the story of a pastor drummed out of his church for alcoholism. The fallen pastor becomes a chaplain at a prison in Raleigh, N.C., and starts counseling a death row inmate. “The plot has him helping the prisoner prepare for execution, and the prisoner is trying to manipulate the chaplain to avoid his execution,” Baggett said of his 374-page paperback. “Running through it is the question of whether this guy is really guilty of what he’s convicted for or not. So there’s a plot there as well.” It’s the fourth book for Baggett, who is also a facilitator at a grief support group that meets at Suntree United Methodist Church, 7400 N. Wickham Road. His wife, Diane, also works with the group. Baggett’s previous work, “Finding the Good in Grief: Rediscovering Joy After a Lifechanging Loss,” is often used by support group members. That book came out in 2013 and is Baggett’s most popular work, he said. Another book, “Seeing Through the Eyes of Jesus,” was published in 2008 and “is a more scholarly book used in college and seminary classes,” he said. When he’s not working on a planned sequel to “Desperate

Amends,” Baggett, his wife and other experts are helping Brevard County residents coping with devastating loss. Their Suntree Grief Journey Support Group meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. every second Tuesday and Thursday at the church from September to May, with monthly dinners from June VIERA VOICE Diane Baggett through August.
