Please make sure that you clean your grill before check-out for the next guest staying at your home. Many homes and condominium complexes provide grilling areas on the grounds. Any grilling at cottages and duplexes must be done as far from the building as possible and in a well ventilated area, as town ordinances prohibit the use of grills on any porches, decks or walkways. HURRICANES & TROPICAL STORMS Hurricane season extends from June to November. When a hurricane approaches our coastline, the Town officials will issue either a mandatory or a voluntary evacuation, based on current conditions. During a mandatory evacuation, vacation guests and permanent residents must leave the island and go further inland. After the mandatory evacuation is executed, the bridges are secured by the state police and no vehicles are allowed on the island until the evacuation is lifted. During a voluntary evacuation, you may decide whether to leave. For either type of evacuation, measures are taken to secure the exterior of your vacation home including storing and moving porch furniture, closing storm shutters, and securing patio furniture and decorations. The National Weather Service issues early warnings so there is ample time for everyone to prepare. Newspapers, radio and television stations keep the public notified about evacuations as well as re-entry information. Listen for details relating to Carteret County, also known as “Bogue Banks” or “The Crystal Coast.” Check our website [BluewaterNC.com] and our Facebook page at [facebook.com/BluewaterRealEstate] for additional information during a storm.

If you are staying in a sound front home, you may have direct access to the sound from a private dock or a boat slip. There is a community boat access to the sound in Emerald Isle, as well as several marinas throughout the island that can offer boat ramps and trailer parking. Keep in mind that the sound is shallow, especially at low tide, when leaving your watercraft docked in the waters of Bogue Sound.

Beaufort BY THE SEA
History abounds in this community. Historic homes line the waterfront and surrounding streets in downtown. Plan for an afternoon on the waterfront exploring over 150 restored historic homes at 18th and 19th century tour stops. A favorite for locals and vacationers alike is the annual Beaufort Old Homes and Gardens Tour. Every year residents open their homes and gardens to the public. House narrators will give insight on the history of these homes. In conjunction with the tour is the Antique Show and Sale, why not learn the history and maybe take a piece of it home with you as well! Hop atop the English Double-Decker bus for a tour around this historic fishing village to see Blackbeard’s home and the mysterious Old Burial Ground. Experience an exhilirating spooky downtown adventure on the Beaufort Ghost Walk while learning of haunted houses and treacherous pirates.
eaufort, the third oldest town in North Carolina, has long been home to pirates, sailors, soldiers and fishermen B since it was incorporated in 1722. Just across the bridge from Morehead City, Beaufort is one of our most treasured destinations. It offers a beautiful sandy shore as well as stunning waterfront views. You can watch the feral horses from the banks of Beaufort or board a ferry to see them in their unspoiled habitat. Don’t forget to pack your own lunch to enjoy the day on Carrot Island.
Take a day to walk along the streets, sightsee and explore the many specialty shops or eat in one of the delicious restaurants along the downtown area. The historic waterfront in Beaufort is the perfect setting for a night filled with entertainment. Soak in the sunset on a late night cruise or wander into one of the many upscale bars for a refreshing cool down. If you’re a foodie, you won’t want to miss out on a culinary tour and the opportunity to sample some of Beaufort’s finest restaurants and classic southern fare.
While you’re there, pay a visit to the NC Maritime Museum to learn about our maritime history. If you’re an adventurous water enthusiast, be sure to go kayaking, parasailing or take a paddle board lesson. With several guided tours and activities available, you’ll never be short of amusement and rich history on the Beaufort waterfront. Whether you spend an afternoon or a whole week in Beaufort, you’ll quickly see what makes this coastal community so special and why it was voted the “Coolest Small Town in America” by Budget Travel in 2012 and one of “America’s Most Romantic Towns” by Travel and Leisure Magazine.

Hop on a boat and observe the natural beauty of the wild horses along Shackleford Banks and Carrot Island. Ferries are located in Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Beaufort, Harkers Island and Davis. This is a favorite for both frequent visitors and first time guests. PLUS: This is a great spot to find fabulous seashells and other treasures swept in by the tide. Take a trip and explore the Cape Lookout National Seashore and climb the 163 foot tall Cape Lookout Lighthouse – once you reach the top, the view will surely take your breath away.
North Carolina’s coastal culinary experience is unlike any other. With a deep sense of tradition, local fare and coastal atmosphere your palate is taken to new heights. Dine on some of the freshest seafood you will ever taste from the famous shrimp burger and Bar-B-Q at Big Oak Drive-In to the fresh caught seafood prepared in imaginative ways at some of the top restaurants along the coast. The Crystal Coast offers the finest in Southern Coastal dining. Join us in October as we celebrate our seafood at the Annual North Carolina Seafood Festival in Morehead City.

With the Gulf Stream pushing warm waters to our shores, the Crystal Coast offers the longest fishing season on the Atlantic coast. Spend the day with a local crew on a charter boat and see what fish you can reel in. Some of the most popular catches along our coast are mahi, blue and yellowfin tuna, red drum, cobia, sailfish, striped bass, false albacore and wahoo. Get a glimpse of the giants of the sea during the Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in early June as the pros weigh their daily catch on the Morehead City Waterfront.

The Crystal Coast has been named one of the ten top diving locations in North America. The ocean floor -the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” - hosts 2000 shipwreck sites along the coastline including World War I and II ships, the U-352 submarine and a breathtaking variety of sharks, exotic Gulf Stream fish and colorful shellfish. Not your style? You can still get up close and personal with thousands of sea creatures at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores. Touch a stingray, watch the otters glide through the water and stare a shark in the eye during their twice daily feedings in the 306,000 gallon Living Shipwreck.

There’s no better way to make memories together than by starting a new tradition. Whether it’s a family photo, a favorite restaurant or an adventure you take together every year, traditions are the best part of family vacations. One of our Facebook Fans, Wendy Eastman shared her family tradition: “Aunt Wendy’s policy is as soon as we arrive - all children PLUS Aunty Wendy must find their way to the beach and jump in to over the head water fully dressed. This has become a tradition for our family.” So come together and find a new tradition while you’re here, one that’s fun and meaningful to your family!
Launch a kayak or stand-up Paddle Board and take in the sights and sounds of the coast as you cruise through the Bogue Sound. There are many small islands and channels just waiting to be explored and miles of smooth intracoastal and river waterways to choose from. Soak in the sights of lush marshes, birds and maybe even a dolphin if you’re really lucky! Whether you spend a half day or pack a lunch and take your family out for the whole day, there is no better way to experience the beauty and charm of our coast than from water level.
Unwind
There is such a thing as “beach time.” Take advantage of the opportunity and turn off your phone, turn off the TV and computer, and really just relax and enjoy yourself. With the fast-paced hectic lifestyle we all lead, this can be hard to do. But you’ll be glad that you did when you look back at the memories and feel totally rejuvenated and reconnected.
Night Life The coast is just as lively after an unforgettable sunset! Brush off the sand and order a classic cocktail from our award winning bartenders or hit the water for a moonlit dinner cruise out of Beaufort or Morehead City. If you want to stay closer to home, try a walk on the beach under the stars! Take a flashlight with you and see if you find any ghost crabs roaming the beach. Try night fishing off of the pier and see what comes out to play after dark under the waves. The tangy salt air and roar of the ocean at night are a whole new experience.

LISTEN... the Ocean is Calling A beach vacation for most of us can be summed up in one word, RELAX. But for a few beach lovers, they desire a little more of an adrenaline rush while visiting the Crystal Coast. For vacationers that seek more there is an endless variety of water activities to do while you’re here; surfing, body boarding and skim boarding, kayaking, parasailing and scuba diving – you name it; you can do it! If you didn’t travel with your own, no worries! local guided tours and rental companies have what you need during your vacation. Not OK with venturing out on your own – there are tours with local guides to lead the waterway.
Atlantic beach Town Park and Splash Pad Want to switch up your entertainment for the kids? Check out the Town Park and Splashpad in Atlantic Beach. The park includes a large playground with swings, merry-go-round, basketball court and much more. Enjoy a time with the family at the miniture golf course - which is available for a small fee - includes your club and golf ball! There is entertainment for big and little kids to enjoy. Enjoy a shady picnic at the picnic site next to the playground equipment. Make sure you wear bathing suits to enjoy a refreshing time in the splashpad, an interactive water play fountain.
Skate Park Need an adrenaline rush? Grab your gear and head to the Town Skate Park in Atlantic Beach. This is a great public place where you are permitted to ride. Skaters under 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Certain hours are allotted for BMX bikes. Wear your gear and have a blast!

Take an excursion and dive one of the hundreds of wrecks along our sea border. Marine life runs wild below sea level, so plan to discover marine life up-close. Our coastline is considered one of the country’s finest collections of shipwrecks to dive and explore sharks, stingrays, dolphins, sea turtles and an endless variety of fish and plants. We are blessed with the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, allowing summer time water temperatures near 80° and winter temperatures near 60°. Although there are hundreds of sunken vessels to explore, our most visited underwater spot is the German submarine “U-352.”

Stand up paddle boarding (SUP) offers an enjoyable and peaceful way to explore the waters of the Crystal Coast. This sport has become a popular coastal activity as well as a great workout. One advantage to SUPing opposed to other water sports is standing at full height - you are inclined to see many sea creatures during your travels and can easily hop off to explore. This sport is also a great way to incorporate the kids and even your dog! Our marketing manager’s French Bulldog, Martini, has embraced the unavoidable lifestyle of a water dog and has become a wonderful tour guide atop her SUP.

Body boarding and skim boarding are great for beginners. For either, just grab the board and head out over the waves to try your hand at surfing back in. Skim boarding takes a bit more practice and coordination to master. Catch the shoreline near low tide, so that you have a wider expanse of flat, sandy beach to work with. Toss the board onto a shallow part of the tide and take a running leap onto catch the board in motion and “skim” over the water. Skim boards are thinner than body boards, allowing you to glide over the shallow water as it recedes with each incoming wave.
For the more adventurous explorer, try parasailing! Flying high across the coastline, you will see breath taking views of the coast like never before. You can fly single or double, and kids as young as 6 can go up! It’s a once in a lifetime experience to see our island from a “birds eye” perspective, and is something your family will remember for years to come. It’s also a remarkably safe adrenaline rush on your family’s summer vacation!
for everyone!
Skate Park Hours Daily 9 AM-9 PM
Surfing the Crystal Coast is a popular pastime for locals and vacationers. Pick a day with light winds and find a secluded spot on the beach to test the waters. Using a longer surfboard and practicing standing up on the beach will make learning easier if it’s your first time riding the waves. If you’re a more experienced surfer, try the waves at The Point. The currents tend to be stronger and paddling out more challenging there. Need a board or surfing lessons? Call our office or visit a local surf shop. Body boarding (or boogie boarding) is also a great alternative to surfing for kids to try. Kids will want to look for a soft board for safety. Take the board out into the breakers and when a wave comes, paddle with it under your body, using it to ride the wave without standing up.
The entire Island is a great place to learn to surf - my favorite is The Point in Emerald Isle. Sam O’Berry Bluewater Insurance
The Intracoastal Waterways and rivers that empty into it make for excellent kayaking. You can start anywhere on the island and explore the barrier island system. Swansboro is a great spot to start if you’re new, as there are several kayak companies that will not only rent you the gear, but also do guided kayak tours. Kayaking is great for beginners at water sports and generally doesn’t involve deep waters. Double kayaks are great for parents and kids or couples to ride together!

Staying Safe Riptides can occur on any beach where there are waves. If you get caught in a current and feel yourself being pulled out to sea, do not try to fight it. Instead, swim parallel to the beach for a few yards. Most riptides are not very wide. Once you are out of the strong current, swim back to shore.

tots take on the Crystal Coast sandy toes
Originally from Charlotte NC, my first visit to the Crystal Coast was in 2008 to visit my then boyfriend, now husband, who is a native of Carteret County. I thought I loved this coastal town until I was able to witness what true love really was, the love my 2 year old daughter has for all things related to water and the beach. Watching our little Macon Lilly explore our coast has been such an incredible experience. Her pure excitement the first time her toes hit the sand, when the waves crashed on her legs and her first time hearing sounds of birds flying over our heads. Her face lights up for each of these new experiences, every time they occur.
splash pad
One of those moments happened when we visited the Splash Pad in Atlantic Beach. The colorfully painted open area shoots water straight from the ground into the sky in a rhythmic pattern. All the parents surround the area while some chase after their little ones running through these coordinated fountains of water.
sea life
The aquarium is of course on your list during your vacation, or your go-to place for a rainy day. However, going with a child who will discover these animals for the first time is a completely different experience. You’ll witness them follow the sea otters as they splash around, watch a sea turtle float past their face or have a shark swim directly towards them. Colorful fish dart through the water as they place their little hand up against the tank glass with a scuba diver’s hand on the other side. It’s an experience you will not soon forget. The touch tank is also a must for those curious little hands, to feel a sea urchin, a live conch or a sting ray’s slippery flaps.
swing & slide
And then there are the hidden gems, dotted throughout our area - playgrounds! If you have a moment and have children of various ages, find a golden opportunity to visit a good ol’ park. To sit back and relax on a park bench or park swing on a warm day and watch your littles stumble about the rocks or attempt to climb a slide makes you slow down and take in all the tiny bits of life you cherish forever.

Reelin'It In
Your North Carolina beach vacation bucket list might include scoring a trophy fish from a privately chartered fishing boat or simply casting a line from one of our piers stretching into the Atlantic. You might be a local who has found a new coastal hobby or “farm fresh” or “ocean to table” might be more your lifestyle and you would prefer to know exactly where your dinner comes from. Whatever your interest might be – there is always something to catch when you have rivers, the sound, inlets and the ocean at your fingertips or should we say “reel.” If you consider yourself to be a junior fisherman – seek out the public fishing spots for the best first hand knowledge of our waters. Piers and public docks can be full of fisherman – all trying to reel in a big catch. These folks are the ones that know our waters like the back of their hand, giving you the inside scoop on what was caught, when it was caught, where it was caught and with what. If a quiet spot is more your scene, you can find small piers and docks that are open to the public and closer to shore. Better yet – you might be one of the lucky ones who has a private dock or pier at their home or community. Crabbing Tip: Drop your pot off a public dock or a soundside home and be patient. Raw chicken, fish heads or barracuda works well as bait for crabbing! Victoria Rice Annual Rentals Coordinator

This Spring I went to fish at a favorite spot of mine a place I fish often. I was standing in water just above my knees when a 3 foot Drum came cruising the shoreline. I saw him and pitched my bait about 20 feet ahead of him. I took two turns of my reel and watched his eye as he spotted my bait. He covered at least 10 to 12 inches in less than a second while heading to the horizon with my bait. After about 75 yards, he spit my bait and hook. This experience, although brief, I will never forget. While I was trying to hook him, I think he might have hooked me. The only thing better than spending a few minutes with a fish is “letting him go.” Ricky Farrington Emerald Isle Real Estate Agent

SWANSBORO The home of Hammocks Beach State Park, the “Friendly City by the Sea” offers a historic downtown district overlooking the water. The quaint village atmosphere and historic downtown area offers shopping in an area alive with restaurants, boutiques, gift shops and waterside parks. Host to the Arts by the Sea Festival, the Mullet Festival and multiple fishing tournaments – Swansboro offers some of the best hospitality on the North Carolina coast.
EMERALD ISLE The outdoorsy adventurous guests to Emerald Isle are in heaven with activities like surfing, kayaking, kiteboarding and paddleboarding . Families can enjoy miles of walking, jogging and bike paths and several nature trails that allow you to enjoy the natural pristine environment with a variety of birds, waterfowl and families of white tail deer. The Point in Emerald Isle is not to be missed when visiting the western shores of Bogue Banks; the sunsets are breathtaking!
SALTER PATH Known for its history as an old fishing village, Salter Path is different because it is home to a large dune system, excellent beaches, breathtaking sound front views and even a small maritime forest. Family beach cottages are easy to spot as you cruise through Salter Path. Be sure to stop and look at Bogue Sound; as it sparkles a magnificent blue on a bright sunny day.

crystal coast
Indian Beach is conveniently located in the middle of Bogue Banks. Its central location on the island allows easy access to the restaurants and shopping of Morehead City and Emerald Isle. But above all, you’ll enjoy the quiet calming expanse of soft sands and lush maritime forest.
PINE KNOLL SHORES The wide beaches and sound side access make it easy to swim, go shelling, clamming or kayaking along this beautiful stretch of island. The North Carolina Aquarium is located in Pine Knoll Shores and offers a variety of marine species including fish, crabs, sea horses, lionfish and sharks. The sea turtle nursery features an albino turtle named Nimbus! Nature trails offer a walk above a tidal marsh where marine creatures live and shore birds wade looking for food. All in all, it’s a tranquil way to spend the afternoon.
ATLANTIC BEACH Atlantic Beach has a retro “beach-town” feel of days past and has been North Carolina’s “go to” beach since the 1930’s. Located at the eastern end of Bogue Banks, Atlantic Beach features a laid back friendly feel with wide sandy beaches, a boardwalk and a commercial district with plenty of dining and shopping options. Nature trails, public parks and beach accesses will draw you in. Atlantic Beach is also home to Fort Macon State Park, a historic Civil War fort, which is the most visited state park in North Carolina.
MOREHEAD CITY Downtown Morehead City has alluring waterfront appeal lined with charter boats, legendary seafood restaurants, charming shops all overlooking Sugarloaf Island. The Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament is held annually in June with crowds, Beaufort, NC gathering daily at the weigh station to see which boat will bring in the biggest blue! Also home of the North Carolina Seafood Festival, held every year the first weekend in October. Vendors line the waterfront with all types of seafood & arts and crafts, along with kid’s rides and activities! Families can also enjoy watching the Morehead City Marlins play baseball at Big Rock Stadium. With multiple shopping centers throughout Morehead City, there’s something for everyone!
BEAUFORT Beaufort, the 3rd oldest town in North Carolina, is known for its Bahamian and West Indian style architecture and its close ties with a notorious pirate. It offers a beautiful sandy shore as well as stunning waterfront views and many specialty shops and delicious restaurants downtown . Spend a sunny afternoon watching the feral horses from the banks of Beaufort or board a ferry to see them in their unspoiled habitat. Hop atop the English Double-Decker bus for a tour around this historic fishing village to see Blackbeard’s home and the mysterious Old Burial Ground. You’ll see exactly what makes this coastal community so special and why it was voted Best Small Town in the USA in 2012.

My German Shorthaired Pointer, Ruger, absolutely loves the water and the beach. His first time was an adveture to say the least, but I quickly learned what worked best for him and me. A cold water bottle, water bowl, treats and toys are a must for a day or even just an hour at the beach. Splashing in the water, chasing his toy, digging holes as the tide rushes out are just a few things Ruger enjoys doing at the beach. Some dogs may love to relax under an umbrella by your chair, or go on peaceful strolls down the beach. Your dog wants to go on adventures with you and the Crystal Coast is the perfect place for it!

Sea turtle
what to find in the tide
sanctuary
Every summer, the endangered loggerhead sea turtles make their way to our island to nest. We have a volunteer program in Emerald Isle that walks the 13 miles of beach to look for new nests. Once they are located, they are marked, protected and when the turtles hatch, volunteers are present to help the hatchlings make their way to the ocean. It is an honor for turtles to nest here. They nest every two to three years, and lay upwards of 100 eggs each time. The new generation returns to the beach that they hatched on to lay their nests, meaning the hatchlings that survive from our beaches will return in 15 to 20 years from now to lay their nests. Nesting mother turtles come ashore mostly overnight to lay their eggs and leave a characteristic “tire-like” track behind them as they make their way to the dunes and back. After about two months, the baby turtles will start to make their way into the world. As their hatching nears, volunteers dig a trench from the nest to the ocean to help the hatchlings get to the water more easily. They also begin sitting watch at the nest in the evenings, waiting for the little ones to make their entrance. Once they are ready and the area is cool and quiet, the nest will start to “boil.” The baby turtles will make their way out, mostly in unison, and the sand above the nest starts to resemble boiling water. Without touching them, volunteers guide the hatchlings using their trench and sometimes even digging an impromptu trench if one goes astray. All efforts are made to increase the survival rate of hatchlings, which is about 1 in 1,000. They have a tremendous journey - Nests are poached by predator animals and disturbed by humans or natural disaster. Disoriented hatchlings can be easy targets for raccoons, birds, and crabs on their journey to the sea. If they make it to the water, they have a four to five day swim out to the Gulf Stream ahead of them, with a sea full of dangers. Do your part to help while you’re here and ensure generations of turtles continue to frequent our coastline.
5 Ways You Can Help the Sea Turtles
1
Fill where you dig
2
Remove beach items
3
Keep outside lights off
Digging in the sand is great fun, but be sure to fill in all of the holes when you are done. Mother turtles can get stuck or injured in them.
Tents, toys, chairs and other beach gear should not be left out overnight. They can be hazardous to mother turtles nesting and new hatchlings.
Any lights on the ocean side of your home should be kept to a minimum. They are a distraction to mother turtles and can keep hatchlings from reaching the water. Their instinct is to head toward the light, which should be the moon over the ocean, so porch lights and flash lights can send them off in the wrong direction.

Tracks from a turtle coming ashore to lay eggs
Turtles lay an average of 100 eggs per nest, and between 2 and 8 nests per season.

Especially plastic bags, which the turtles think are jellyfish (one of their main food sources!) It can make them sick!
If you should happen to find a mother turtle nesting or a turtle nest hatching, stay back at least 30 feet and turn off your flashlight and avoid camera flashes. Turn off your cell phone ringer and try to stay very quiet. You will get to witness something rare and wonderful!

Dig into the sand just at the water line and you’re sure to find some of these guys. You can scoop up a handful of sand with one in it and watch them move quickly to hide. They move and burrow backwards into the sand! They make great bait for pompano and sheepshead.
These tiny shells can sometimes be found still paired! Try stirring up the sand in a tide pool and watching quietly. Many times you’ll find a live one and see it burrow itself back down into the sand. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, and can be very tiny. They are also known as “Angel’s Wings.”
Sand Dollars
Whelk Shells & Egg Cases
Venturing out to barrier islands and the Cape Lookout Seashore will help you find some still “alive” with a velvety brownish-green exterior. Put those ones back, only collect ones that are sun-bleached white.
You’ll find three varieties here: the Lightening Whelk, the Knobbed Whelk and the Channel Whelk. Their egg cases are long, spiral chains of pods, and are a neat find!
Scotch Bonnet This is an important find - it’s our state shell! Look for the trademark pattern and a curled outer edge.

home grown The Crystal Coast offers much more than our mouthwatering, locally caught seafood! Up and down the roadside you will stumble upon farm stands that are stocked with delicious and fresh fruits, veggies and meats. Farms on the beach seem a little peculiar, doesn’t it? Well that’s why the Crystal Coast is so unique! You can dazzle your taste buds during breakfast or dessert with a strawberry parfait or even sink your teeth into a juicy and thick slice of bacon. There’s a certain satisfaction that comes with selecting good food from a bin of produce harvested that same morning. Our local farmers are here to feed yourself and your family the cream of the crop! Don’t forget - you can’t go home without tasting a Bogue Sound Watermelon! Now this isn’t just any kind of watermelon... These melons harvested down by the sound are naturally sweeter than those piled up at the grocery store. Our local produce stands have first dibs on selling them. Check out Garner Farms, Guthrie Farm Produce, Winberry Farm and many others to indulge in a sweet, refreshing summer treat! Looking for a fun a flavorful event for the entire family? Explore the Salty Air Open Market or the Market at Cedar Point! They host family events and schedule food trucks throughout the week. Or, if you are taking a trip down to Beaufort, try to catch the Saturday morning Olde Beaufort Farmers’ Market. You can find fresh produce as well as beautiful crafts from local artisans. Worn out from a long day at the beach and don’t feel like cooking a meal in the evening? Head down to Friendly Market where you can pick up a yummy prepared meal. Want to pick your own strawberries? The Diamond Lady & her wild ponies
Cape Lookout National Seashore is where you will find this beautiful “Diamond Lady,” as we locals affectionately call her. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is one of seven statuesque beacons that sprinkle the North Carolina coastline. Only three miles off the shore of Harkers Island, visitors can take a short trip or spend an entire day on the undeveloped barrier islands. You are greeted by an impressive welcome center that seems to appear out of thin air, where quick lessons and videos fill you with knowledge of what adventures lay ahead in your day.
Keep it clean
There are a few restrooms dotted across Cape Lookout, but you will want to pack any food, water and trash bags, for the Islands are trash free. What you bring here, you must leave with.
After you are familiarized with the islands, you can proceed to purchasing your ferry ticket to either the main island of Cape Lookout or Shackleford Banks. Visit Cape Lookout to see the lighthouse and Shackleford Banks to see the wild ponies. A typical visit includes one or all of the following: horse watching, shelling, fishing, birding, camping and lighthouse climbing.
My must-have things to bring to the Cape: Ziploc baggies for my phone and keys, grocery bags for trash, mesh bags from Dollar Tree for shells (easy to rinse!) and a backpack to stay hands-free! Clarissa Gregg Marketing Coordinator

5 Fun Facts about Cape Lookout National Seashore 1 2
3 undeveloped barrier island make up the seashore: North and South Core Banks and Shackleford Banks.
They live on federal goverment land and are co-managed by Cape Lookout National Seashore & the non-profit Foundation for Shackleford Horses. They are freeze branded to be identified by the National Park Service.
3
There are 188 steps to the top of the 169 foot tall Cape Lookout Lighthouse. It is the second that has stood on this location, the first lighthouse stood 96 feet tall and was too short to light the Lookout Shoals.
4
Ponies mostly eat grass and will dig into underground water sources for fresh water. The docile banker ponies are small in stature due to the limited nutrients in their diet.
4
Driving is allowed on Cape Lookout National Seasore and South Core Banks with a beach off roading permit, just ferry over your vehicle.
5
In the 1980’s, a population boom with the horses resulted in a degraded habitat and unhealthy horses. Because of this, select female horses are given birth control to keep a healty population.
5
The barrier islands were once occupied by residence dating back to the early 1700s. By the 1890s the islands were abondoned due to disastrous hurricanes. Residents moved, some having their homes floated, to Harkers Island, Salter Path or to Morehead City’s section called the “Promised Land”.
1
These ponies live on the banks on their own with no human interaction since the 16th century. They are actually called “feral” ponies since they are descendants of domesticated stock, rather than totally wild.
2
One theory claims the ponies are descendants of shipwrecked Spanish herds from 400 years ago. Others believe they are Viking descent, due to the occasional blonde tufted horses.
