PROJECT ONE Project one introduces a new way to explore architectural design in urban studio. This project involves being able to identify specific elements in a picture that play a big role in making the whole picture come together; identifying the parts that create the sum.

PROJECT TWO

BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE CITY

BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE CITY

PROJECT TWO - Analyze Project two introduces a detailed analysis and context into urban design. During this project, students were tasked with diagramming and identifying the key players in each of their assigned locations within Baltimore City.

Over the course of project two, i’ve learned how important it is in understanding the context of a given site. The context of any site plays a major role in the succession of a project. It can shape the given area and possibly be the different between a good environment or a bad one.

IMAGINE

PROJECT TWO

BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE CITY

PROJECT TWO - Analyze The next step of this project involved using outside materials and constructing an abstract model that resembled the designated site area and its main players. Within the model, a palette of rubber bands, and wire were used in order to construct and assemble the project.

New wire represented the attractions and the main elements while the bigger pieces of wire represented main areas of the inner harbor; Rubber bands represented the street grid.

BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE CITY From this project, i’ve learned to how abstract models and materials can communicate different ideas and a more simple or complex idea of what an element of a model is suppose to represent.

On the other half of the model, the rusted wire represented the decaying within the area;

COMMUNICATE

PROJECT TWO

BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE CITY

PROJECT TWO - COMMUNICATE The next step of project two involved the individual neighborhood case study. This involved visiting the site and capturing pictures that identified specific urban conditions and conflicts within that area.

BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE CITY What i learned from this project is that gathering information about a given site is key to analyzing and programming it. It is essential to gather information about an area in order to understand what works, what may have problems and what solutions can be made in order to resolve them.

URBAN REDEVELOPMENT

urban redevelopment

PROJECT Three - urban analysis Project three takes urban design a step further with real live problems that require critical thinking. Students were tasked with dealing with the Jones Falls site and its conflict with I-83, the surrounding context, and the abandoned buildings apart of the site that cause decay

The first phase of the project was identifying and acquiring information about the Jones Fall site. Groups were assigned with dealing with the physical model, digital model, visual date, and site documentation of the site area.

PROJECT Three - diagramming and analysis Progressing through the project, students designed concepts or interventions that envisioned a change in the Jones Falls site area. This portion of the project involved graphic skill and also information about the site area.

Vignette 2: GROWTH - Addresses the issue movement and the site area’s lack of transportation. This intervention ensures safe transportion for pedestrians & also for vehicular movement.

PROJECT Three - diagramming and analysis

After analyzing the Jones Falls site and its context, students were grouped by similar proposal concepts in order to create one uniform proposal to change the urban conditions of the jones falls site.

Proposal 1: Incorporating a mixedused district within the area to attract more people outside the site to come.

Vignette 3: EVOLUTION - Focuses primarily on the restoration of current buildings and transforming them into places that can cultivate more people within the site area.

CASE STUDIES In Project 3.2, individual groups conduct case studies on specifc architectural projects in order to assess the conditions of the current site and apply them to their design proposals. During this portion of project, each group member was instructed to find two precedents that support each of the three case studies. My partner Sumayyah Raji was tasked with Pocket Park, Linear Park & Square Park case studies; Tiffany Dockins was assigned to the Waterfront, Market, Square, & Residential/Commercial Boulevards portion of the case studies; I was tasked with conducting case studies on the Piazza, Elevated Public Space & Courts.

PROJECT Three - DESIGN INTERVENTIONS Using each case study, my group and I formulated design interventions that would communicate our proposal toward the Jones Falls Site.

Green Infrastructure Intervention proposes an expansion of green spacing within the Jones Falls area. Pictures illustrate a reference or vision what what the designated areas are.

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE

Question

CAN A TRANS-DISCIPLINARY GREEN SPACE CREATE A SOCIAL DESTINATION FOR PEOPLE TO INHABIT?

Plaza area that it inteded for the public that will fit overtop of I-83 to stengthen connections between the site and Mount Vernon

Current Conditions - Area Adjacent to Guilford & I-83

Proper Seating for many people to engage; gravitating people to the area. greenery within the area as well as art to bring vitality to the area

Green space assists the transit hub in revitalizing the area. Incorporating different elements within the 3 squares in the park, such as, seating, plant use, low wall murals and paintings, the area will have people going out towards downtown, and more individuals coming in to experience what the site has to offer.

Public green space within the center of a mixed-used district to attract people within the area to not only conduct business, but also spent time within the area at their own leisure. Green space will consist of elements such as seating, food kiosks, greenery, and paving in order to enhance the overall state within the community. UNDER I - 83 CONDITIONS

Question

CAN DESIGNING A DYNAMIC STRIP UNDER I-83 SERVE AS A SOCIABLE CONNECTOR BETWEEN SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS ?

Recreational Park: Under highway transition parks will begin under I - 83 and connect the urban conditions on either sides of the highway.

Existing 83 Conditions

Transitional Park: Creating transitional spaces under the park wil link parallel neighborhoods to one another. The under conditions will transfer activity onto the project site. Morgan State University - School of Architecture and Planning - BSAED

Market Place: Creating flexible and multi-use spaces under I- 83 wil create more inclusive activity. Implimenting possitive programs to the site will increase density and allow more community based influence.

Existing 83 Conditions

Greenway: Using under I - 83 onto Fallsway as an outpour of vegetation will add more greenspace and allow for a sufficient watershed onto the project site. ARCH 302 - Fall 2018 - Jamil Nelson | Sumayyah Raji | Tiffany Dockins

The Transit Oriented Development Intervention discusses the possible implementation of a transit center in order to resolve the issue of transportation of individuals coming to the site area and more importantly, going out to other areas such as Mount Vernon, Johns Hopkins, or Downtown.

Question

TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

CAN AN URBAN TRANSIT CENTER ATTRACT MORE RESIDENTS AND PROMOTE ECONOMIC DIVERSITY?

Mixed-Use Development A mixed-use community will be developed around the transit center to attract diverse residents, young couples and families to the neighborhood.

Transit Center A transportation hub will be constructed to optimize all the transportation modes that run through the neighborhood. It will be a mixeduse center with retail, parking, bus and bike amenities.

Students were instructed to finalize their design strategies or intervention and then begin implementing them within the site. This phase required graphical sketches, as well as a physical abstract model to communincate the groups ideas.

While going through this phase of the project, i learned how crucial level of communication is and how teamwork in any given project or scenario is imperative in making a design proposal come together,
