ELAN 380 ANNOUNCED Elan have just announced the completely new Elan 380, which is planned to be a high performance cruiser designed to please both performanceoriented sailors and offer comfortable cruising in style for family or friends at the same time. From the sketches released to the press by Elan, the 380 will be immediately recognisable as part of the performance line of Elans. She should share features and characteristics with the other yachts in this award-winning range which is targeting cruisers who want that little bit of extra performance from their yacht. Her elegant and refined lines with clean decks should result in greater freedom and safe movement on board. The side view of the new Elan 380 with its exceptional waterline length and designer hull and deck port lights contribute to her aesthetic and harmonious strength. The open transom with ef-

ficient cockpit layout shows us that Elan were thinking of fulfilling the needs of racing crew as well as enhancing the ease of handling while cruising shorthanded. All lines, including the German mainsheet system will be led under the deck to the cockpit and to selftailing winches which Elan are describing as “powerful”, and the large diameter wheel places the helmsman in the optimum position for sailing efficiency, visibility and control. Elan sailing yachts come with a prestigious pedigree that is a promise of excellence and a commitment to quality throughout. Along the years we have seen the Slovenian shipyard win one award after an other, and at time of going to press, they had two boats nominated for this year’s European Yacht of the Year award. Below deck Elan will be offering layouts in 3 cabin, 2 cabin with 1 head or 2 cabin 2 heads, with the latter providing

enough space for privacy and relaxation. The fully equipped L-shaped galley should satisfy the toughest chef‘s demands. The spacious and airy saloon seems to offer comfort for the crew and plenty of storage, while the forward facing chart table serves the needs of both navigation and communication. World renowned yacht designer Rob Humphreys’ masterful configuration of the keel, rudder, rig and hull design produces a well-balanced yacht with optimum weight distribution along with a remarkably high level of stability and excellent response. The hull and main stringers will be moulded in a one-shot process using highly advanced technology based on environmentally friendly vacuum assisted lamination called 3D VAIL. This technique improves the strength and mechanical properties of the hull laminate by as much as 50%. The

hull’s powerful inner structure ensures that all loads from the keel and rig are distributed effectively with minimum hull flexing. Elan are claiming that the result of the extensive hydrodynamic research and attention to detail will give the

helmsman and crew a confident feeling of safety, control and comfort during navigation in every kind of sea and wind conditions, and from what we’ve seen in current Elans, we have every reason to agree. The launch is scheduled for Internautica Boat Show.

DIVA WINS BENETEAU CUP 2007 This year’s edition of the Beneteau Cup was held late last year in reasonably strong conditions. By the end of the briefing held on the Thursday prior to this three day event, 24 boats had registered all of whom knew that conditions were not going to be easy. The organisers of the event even changed the program at the eleventh hour so that on the Saturday, where for the best part of the day it was blowing 35 knots plus, all boats would be tied on the Pontoons in Mgarr Harbour. On the Friday afternoon race the boats had to deal with

between 10 and 23 knots west to North West. With a start line laid right opposite the new Excelsior Grand Hotel the boats reached quickly to Tigne point with Maarial, Aimalta Falcon and Medbank Elusive hoisting spinnakers. The boats then headed up towards the west cardinal mark outside the Blue lagoon where a finish line was laid. The changing wind direction and speed called for some sharp tactics on the 2 hour long beat. Generally those sticking close to shore were favoured. At sunset, when the boats were entering the north comino channel the winds eased making it more difficult. The racing got closer and boats crossed the line within seconds of each other. With Saturday’s race abandoned, all participants were focused on the Sunday run. The wind was expected to be NW 25 knots which would make the run back to Marsamxetto sheer bliss. With a start line laid outside Santa Maria Bay, the boats proceeded towards the west cardinal mark outside the Blue lagoon and from there

back to Marsamxetto harbour to cross the line laid opposite the Excelsior Grand hotel. After beating to the cardinal mark the boats cracked off and reached towards Ponta Rqiqa negotiating the westerly swell at their beam. From the south comino channel onwards however it helped most boats clock double digit figures with most of the boat crossing the line at marsamxett in just over 1 hour. Once finished the boats berthed in the basin at the Exclesior Grand Hotel were the presentation was held. MALTA YOUNG SAILORS

at the Mediterranean Cup, Reggio Calabria A team of 11 sailors from the Malta Young Sailors Club, accompanied by National Optimist Sailing Coach Jean-Paul Fleri Soler, recently returned from Reggio Calabria after participating in the 23rd edition of the ‘Mediterranean Cup’, held at the ‘Circolo Velico Reggio ASD’ between the 1st and 3rd November. The ‘Mediterranean Cup’ is held annually in the Messina Straits and provides a spectacle for onlookers, with a fleet of over 70 sailors sailing against the majestic backdrop of mountains and hill-sides. This year sailors from all over Italy, including the full complement of the Italian National Olympic Optimist Sailing Team, took part, together with sailors from Slovenia and Malta. Wind conditions were difficult at times, with great fluctuations ranging from very light to very strong in the same race. A short but intense storm also played havoc with the first day’s races, bringing the total number of races held during the regatta to only four.

3

on

With 68 sailors in the main fleet, shifting winds and strong currents initially disadvantaged our sailors who had not got the chance to test the waters in a practice race prior to the regatta proper. Thomas Zammit Tabona and Gabriel Pace were the two most consistent sailors, with Zammit Tabona being Malta’s only hope of a podium placing on the last day of the regatta. But since only 4 races were held out of the planned 7, the Maltese team was seriously disadvantaged. Thomas Zammit Tabona placed 8th overall, a creditable achievement considering the level of competition and the

shifty conditions. Separate races were held for the Cadet class, and this was the first international overseas experience for cadets Karl Miggiani, Thomas Bonello Ghio and Edward Fleri Soler. Sailing in a fleet of 41 sailors was a good learning experience for all, and the best result in this class was achieved by Edward Fleri Soler, who ended the regatta in 11th position. It is hoped that participation at the Mediterranean Cup will be a yearly commitment for Malta Young Sailors, as the Club firmly believes in international exposure for its sailors.

New feature on the Mastervolt Whisper 25/30: Hydraulic Boost

Dehler 36SQ wins

Mastervolt has just introduced a new feature for the Whisper 25/30 Ultra: the Hydraulic Boost. This low RPM diesel generator is extremely compact (dimensions: LxWxH 126 x 68 x 80 cm.), exceptionally quiet due to efficient sound proofing and is relatively lightweight (580 kg. including sound shield canopy). It offers 25 kW power at 50 Hz or 30 kW at 60 Hz. The optional PTO (Power Take Off ) to mount a hydraulic pump makes this unit even more attractive for high profile sailing vessels where a lot of hydraulic power is required. When under sail, often little electric power is required, but more hydraulic power than a 1500

German Dehler representative, Torsten Röder’s purchase of a beautiful Judel & Vrolijkdesigned Dehler 36SQ for promotional purposes paid off as soon as the boat was in the water with this excellent result. The NRW-Cup 2007, a German organised high level regatta for ORC classes, which took place in Lelystad in the Netherlands, was Torsten Röder’s first target. On Wednesday, the beautiful yacht arrived in Lelystad to float for the first time in her life and the alloy Seldén rig also saw its first daylight. On Thursday, the crew met for the first time and managed 3 hours of training in very light winds. In other words, there were no serious preparations, but just enough to start the first “up and down” short track race on Friday morning. The field consisted of some tough competition including a brand new X43, 2 x X37, X35, Sigma 400, Luffe 40, First 36.7, 35Match etc. After a mediumgood start they achieved a second-place, just behind the X43; so on corrected time an easy victory despite the tough competition. The second short track race was just as successful, in fact they finished even closer behind the X43. “In fairness, Friday brought 12-16 knots of wind and the 36SQ is good in light winds,

RPM or 1800 RPM engine can deliver. Hydraulic Boost offers extra hydraulic power up to 37 kW by increasing the rotational speed of the engine up to 2200 RPM. This Hydraulic Boost option works fully automatically, after pushing the Hydro Boost button the electric power is switched off, the internal alternator circuitry is isolated and the RPM increased resulting in extra hydraulic power becoming available. Marine Varta Batteries now in Malta Varta batteries for mobile power provide small boats, sailing yachts and motor yachts with energy in a safe and reliable manner. The Varta Semi-Traction battery offers up to 3 times higher cyclic capacity than conventional batteries, with excellent value for money due to the significantly increased service life. This battery is ideal for seasonal use as it can be stored safely without detrimental loss

of charge for up to 6 months after charging. It is also spill proof up to 55 degrees. Varta’s Drymobil battery is totally sealed, thus allowing no acid spills or vapour leaks. With 4 times the cyclic capacity of conventional batteries and up to 700 charge/ discharge cycles when discharged down to 60% it guarantees a longer life service. A low self discharge rate withstands longer periods out of use, thus ideal for

seasonal use. Varta’s Drymobil also offers added safety through an integral flame arrestor and pressure release vent. Varta batteries are available from Strand Marine and Autosystems ltd.

New LED courtesy lamps from Hella Illuminating the interior and exterior of a boat doesn’t have to be a strain on the batteries and eyes. The new LED Courtesy Lamps from Hella Marine feature a minimal mounting depth, only 13 mm, and energy efficient LED technology with advanced Hella lens technology to provide a cool, even spread of soft light without glare or strain on boater’s eyes. Completely sealed, waterproof and UV- and corrosion-resistant, the units have an ultra long service life so boaters can “fit and forget.” Available in white, warm white, blue, green, cyan, red, deep red, orange and yellow with a choice of 316 polished stainless steel, gold-plated stainless steel and black, white or custom colored plastic rims, the LED lamps consume a fraction of the

energy of traditional bulb lamps and run very cool due to their low current draw. This allows for safer installation into lightweight materials where the heat of traditional lamps may cause damage. Designed and manufactured in New Zealand, the LED Courtesy Lamps are available in 12V and 24V DC versions. They are perfect for steps and stairs, lockers, companionways, bilges, nighttime running lights, cockpits, boarding platforms, storage areas and more. 2007 NRW CUP plus we had “beginners luck”. On the second day though, the crew had to prove themselves with stronger conditions of up to 22-24 knots on a long track race. Everybody knows that all kinds of sailing boats can sail fast with strong winds but again the Dehler 36SQ came first, just behind the X43 and far in front of the X37, 35match, X35 etc.” “Besides the fact that the crew did not train more than 3 hours and the boat saw the water only 40 hours before the first race, this particular Dehler 36SQ is also a completely standard production boat with not one modification made in the favour of performance! As proven, the yacht performed tremendously; stable, direct on the rudder, easy to trim and to keep up straight even with strong winds and spinnaker, very good upwind performance...but most off all fast, really fast.” Ralph Spee (Sales Manager)

BENETEAU OCÉANIS 31 BENETEAU Launched at FIRST 45 UNVEILED Paris Boat Show Following the launch of the Oceanis 37 at the Southampton Boat Show 2007, the Salon Nautique in Paris saw the launch of the new Finot designed Beneteau Oceanis 31. The overall concept of this boat is to supply the market with a comfortable, safe and fast family yacht at unbeatable value. Aesthetically the Oceanis 31 has the strong exterior identity of the larger Oceanis 37. Sporting a generous sail plan on a fractionally rigged mast, a narrow entry at the bows, a large cockpit and sleek side windows ensures that this boat will follow the success of her bigger sisters. Once on board the 31, in spite the constraint of her length overall, the cockpit still manages a totally dedicated life raft locker which is stored underneath the aft seat/transom. Getting around

the 900mm column mounted wheel is surprisingly easy and the cockpit locker to starboard is laid with shelving to facilitate storage. The Nauta-designed interior emits the same sense of ‘plush’ as her bigger sisters. The ‘Alpi’ woodwork combined with light-coloured fabrics and overhead hatches and screens radiates a bright and airy interior. The spaces have been well thought out - the galley is the largest in its category, and the heads, chart table, and saloon make for a good family boat. The largest achievement for the European Yard of the Year 2007 is to be able to launch this yacht at a price of EUR60,900 (Lm26,144).

At the Salon Nautique de Paris, Beneteau’s new First 45 has just been revealed to an eager public. The Launch was hosted by Madame Roux, Bruno Cathelinais (President of Beneteau Group), Henri Brisse (Vice President of Sales & Marketing), Philippe Briand (First 45, First 50 designer) and Ms Tabarly. Following the success of the recently launched First 50, this new member of the latest generation ‘First’ follows the same philosophies of plush and performance. Acclaimed by critics to be even more sporty than the already impressive First 50, the 45 still provides all the comfort and luxury that has become expected from the leading French shipyard. The modern interior boast style and comfort, with oak woodwork, stainless steel fittings and leather trim. The large skylights make for an airy and fresh interior. Emphasis has also been placed on practicality, with laminated floorboards providing a durable and rugged finish, hand-holds in strategic locations, and very generous living spaces. Plenty of storage space and well thought out ergonomics assure that the boat is just as desirable for family holidays as well as for on the racecourse. A truly seductive combination. Underwater, Philippe Briand has once again worked marvels, producing an efficient and easily driven hull. The powerful fin keel and bulb, coupled with a light and sensitive rudder make for a stiff and responsive boat. The Sports version, with its 18+ metre mast, has plenty of power on tap, with a tapered, 3-spreader mast to extract the maximum out of the sails. The fine entry on the bow makes for easy upwind sailing,

whilst the hard chine on the aft section of the hull guarantees speed and stability once off the wind. On deck, the boat is kitted out with the best equipment available, with harken and Spinlock hardware, and Dyneema running rigging. Crew spaces have also been well thought out, with a large open cockpit, carefully positioned winches, and a clean, clutter-free deck. Cockpit ergonomics have been based on the tried and tested First 40.7, and are aimed at having a boat that is easily manageable in regatta conditions, with a crew of less than ten persons. The aft cockpit is closed off with a beam across the transom, maintaining safety and security without compromising the open plan. The most notable difference from her larger sister is that the First 45 is now sporting a ball-raced mainsail traveller, right across the cockpit floor, with a dual purchase mainsheet led back to the trimmers’ winches. All in all, this new thoroughbred from the European Shipyard of the year promises to live up to its reputation - more FIRST than ever!

SEALINE launch a new open sports

cruiser at the 2008 Excel London Boat show

SALONA 34 ANNOUNCED This new Salona model is the perfect example of the approach to boat building that AD Boats has succesfully applied on the whole range of Salona sailing boats. Attractive and slender design follows the style of award winning Salona 37, with her gentle lines, characteristic bow design and many details that make the new Salona look significantly bigger then its 34 feet. Some of the most important design features are the open Mediterranean style cockpit with an optional closed transom bench. The deck surface is sleek with deck hardware suitable for racing, the cabin sporty and with a bow section that easily accommodates furling system under the deck. The true essence of this classic cruiser racer is found in the beautiful and fast hull design and uncompromised construction that give her the ability to sail in all conditions and successfully compete on the racing scene. A special part of the boat building process is the laminated sandwich construction with the internal stanless steel reinforcement. This, together with interior reinforcements creates special stiffness and increases the durability of the boat. With the yard’s special attention to details and customer satisfaction, this boat is a perfect combination of high quality, comfort and performance.

The deck layout of Salona 34 offers plenty of space in the cockpit area, that, together with the cabin integrated spray top makes sailing in the warm and cold waters equally comfortable. Interior layout highlights the designer’s approach dedicated to maximum comfort and functionality. Two large cabins with a large dining area make this boat perfectly suitable for memorable moments spent on the water, with full comfort of on board living. Clearly this boat does not compromise on the interior arrangement, and is fully dedicated to the owner’s pleasure. Starting at just over €100,000, the Salona 34’s standard layout includes two cabins and one head. Harken equipment is inlcuded as standard. The interior is built from solid wood and plywood faced with oak. Cabins are fully equipped with necessaties and comforts. The saloon includes sofas on each side, a removable, foldable table and a lot of storage space in intelligent spaces. The L-shaped galley was fit neatly between the hull and the companionway on the port side and includes stainless steel rectangular sinks, mixing tank, gimbled gas stove with oven and two burners as well as a 50l refrigerator. Standard engines are the Volvo D1 20 130S (saildrive).

Bavaria 34 cruiser

Sealine International is launching the new 35 Sport at the Excel London Boat Show which is currently underway. Perfect for day and weekend cruising, the innovative 35 Sport has a complete wrap around sports windscreen with a distinctive stainless steel frame. To compliment the windscreen low level hand rails are located all around the foredeck with two hooking points adjacent to the anchor locker. These features ensure an easy passage from the cockpit to the bow. There is a large foredeck area with optional cushions for comfortable sunbathing plus the option to add a simple bimini to keep the sun at bay in the cockpit. The clean sophisticated lines of the totally open deck layout together with the low wrap around screen emphasise the fact that this is a boat that has been built for a true wind in the hair boating experience. Designed in conjunction with the acclaimed SC35 Sports Convertible launched in September 2007, the 35 Sport has the same hull which was created by the Sealine in house team in collaboration with Ocke Mannerfelt. Below decks the accommodation is extremely light and spacious and can comfortably sleep up to six guests. There is a large saloon with a skylight which is perfect for entertaining, a very well equipped galley together with an excellent optional entertainment system. The large forward master cabin is reached by a set of double doors and the flexible second cabin has three separate berths which can be converted to form a double and single berth. Separate shower and toilet compartments add to the luxury of the bright contemporary interior. There is an opportunity to extend by some 600mm the already spacious aft platform – this facilitates easy access into the water and is also the perfect location for a small dinghy or other watercraft. The optional Mediterranean styled Swimming Platform comes with an easy to use swim ladder. An anchor light which simply slots into the

carefully located deck fitting offers excellent visibility for night time mooring. Navigation lights are fitted into the front of the foredeck. The new 35 Sport comes with three engine options ranging from 225-300hp. The boat at the show has a striking Sealine blue hull with white decks and light pebble coloured sunbrella cockpit cushions. Also on show is the new SC35, the flagship T60 and T50 luxury motor yachts, the F42/5, F37 and F34 flybridge motor yachts and the S42, SC38 and SC29 Sports convertibles. Also unveiled for the very first time were the design visuals for a new flagship sport cruiser the SC47 due for launch in late summer 2008.
