Successstories David Marsh
Jemma McLean
Kevin Albright
After being made redundant from the automotive industry after 22 years, David Marsh made the decision to pursue a role in the care sector. He completed an Introduction to Health Care course while volunteering as a driver’s assistant at St Luke’s Day Centre in Kingstanding. His continued studies led to him gaining employment at the Centre as a driver and care support worker.
Finding new employment proved to be quite a challenge for return to work mum, Jemma McLean until she signed up for the BMET Job Skills Academy’s Business Administration course.
Kevin Allbright arrived at the College with the aim of coming away with some qualifications in Basic Construction under his belt. What he didn’t expect was to be invited by the College to stay on and become a teaching staff member.
She commented: “There was a diverse group of people on the course; some with office experience and others who were looking to take their first step into the industry and we all benefited from the training we received. “Just before starting, I attended an interview for an Assistant Administrator role. Being able to prove that I was willing to carry out training in order to get a job, clinched it for me and I started work just over a month ago.”
“Being offered employment was the icing on the cake for me,” he said. “I was already getting a lot of satisfaction from what I was doing, but to actually be classed as a care professional gave me a whole new sense of achievement. I feel very confident in my abilities and optimistic about my future in the care sector.”
“I would definitely recommend this course to others if they are looking for work. Even if you have worked in administration, there is still plenty you can learn and it really makes a difference to your CV.”
He explained: “Teaching was never a career avenue I’d thought of pursuing, but after being made redundant from my plumbing job a year ago and coming back to College so that I could branch out into other areas of the construction industry, the opportunity to train students in a professional capacity suddenly presented itself and I thought, why not?”
“Not only am I now sharing my experiences of the industry with others, I’m also learning new things myself.”
