Access Courses Access courses are aimed at adults aged 19 and over who have a career path in mind that is likely to require University level study. Access Courses develop study skills, build confidence, and allow learners to experience different subject areas within their chosen pathway - to prepare them for study at university. They are ideal for people who may have missed out on an opportunity to study previously. Birmingham Metropolitan College offers a wide range of Access Courses. Each year, hundreds of our learners gain entry to some of the UK’s most prestigious universities, including local institutions like Warwick, Aston and Birmingham. Learners who would like to study on one of our Access Courses should be motivated, enthusiastic and able to manage their time effectively. In return, we will provide a supportive and caring environment, where you can study with like-minded people. This is the last year that adult learners (24+) will receive government grant funding for Access Courses and other Level 3 programmes. if this is something you’ve always thought about doing – don’t delay any further. From 1st August, 2013, anyone aged 24 and over who starts a Level 3 or Level 4 course in England will be responsible for the full cost of their studies – including those on benefits. From 2013, FE loans will be available for particular college courses and apprenticeships – on the same terms as the new higher education loans. If you are 24 or over this is your last chance to receive Government funding for your course.
Entry Requirements We ask that applicants can demonstrate a range of life experiences outside of formal education including but not limited to voluntary or paid work so you can benefit fully from the experience of studying these courses. You will need to demonstrate that you have literacy skills and numeracy skills at Level 2 as a minimum. To do this we will ask you to complete an on-line assessment. We also ask you to complete a piece of free writing in a set time, a written comprehension test and an interview with a course tutor. This may seem like a long list but we know what is required to prepare you to study university level qualifications and we want to make sure you have every chance of success. GCSE English and Maths at Grade C are critical requirements for University entrance so if you do not have these or their equivalent you will need to study them alongside your access programme. If you are studying a health, social care or education programme you will also be required to study Science to GCSE if you haven’t already achieved a Grade C. We have Access Courses available in the following areas: • Access to HE Business • Access to HE Law and Criminology • Access to HE Social Science/Humanities • Access to HE Health and Social Professions • Access to HE Health Science • Access to HE Education Studies • Access to HE PE • Access to HE Sport • Access to HE Dip Engineering • Access to HE Science

It’s always tempting to stick with the job you’ve got and the security it provides. I fell into a career in the NHS after being offered a post as a Health Care Assistant at Sandwell Hospital. I was thrilled when I was promoted to Senior Health Care Assistant, but deep down it was the courtroom and not the hospital ward that I was drawn to.

I’ve spent 20 years looking for the right career for me. I’ve worked in all kinds of different jobs over the past two decades, from Barman to Carpenter, but when I saw how rewarding my wife’s work as a Teacher could be, I realised that that was what I wanted to do too. I hadn’t set foot in a classroom since I left school in 1989 and the prospect was a bit daunting, but I soon got into the swing of it and managed perfect attendance. I’m on my way to working in a profession that will be so much more than just another job.

It’s never too late to try again. I started a legal secretarial course 14 years ago and I always regretted not finishing it. Since then I’ve had kids, worked in childcare and nursing, I’ve even managed to complete a number of courses in holistic therapies. Throughout all this, the desire to complete the course I didn’t finish and finally become a legal secretary has been at the back of my mind. Being a carer, mother, sister, aunt, daughter, godmother, friend and counsellor means a lot to me and I’m really looking forward to adding legal secretary to that list.

We mums have a habit of putting our kids’ needs first, but as they grow up we realise that we need to do things for ourselves too. For years I thought I would follow in the footsteps of my family and pursue a military career, but after raising three sons and with two of them at university and one of them in sixth form, I decided it was time for me to do some studying of my own. I realised that it wasn’t the military I was really interested in but hairdressing. I’m dyslexic so I had to work that little bit harder at the course, but I also found that my life experiences meant I was able to help mentor a younger student who lacked confidence and needed some friendly encouragement.

52
Developing reading skills will help you to read for enjoyment and support your children with their schoolwork. Functional English and ESOL also concentrate on improving writing skills and on the ability to write appropriately in different situations. The courses also consider different methods of communication in the 21st Century to support the development of core language and literacy skills. We teach our numeracy courses in a way that reflects real life situations. Many of our learners have had difficult experiences with maths, but we focus on the application of numeracy skills and on removing barriers to this subject.
For anyone whose first language is not English (ESOL), Functional ESOL can: • Improve your written English • Develop your spoken English • Help you progress on to other vocational courses • Help you in the workplace These courses are also open to international students. These courses are delivered by enthusiastic and supportive lecturers with specialisms in Literacy, Numeracy or ESOL. The courses are designed to meet the individual needs of learners, and the subject area regularly receives excellent learner feedback. As part of the Functional English, Maths and ESOL courses, learners will also be given the opportunity to gain either ASDAN qualifications in Personal and Social Development (for English courses) or an Award in ICT (for Maths courses). These additional qualifications, delivered as part of the course, further support learners in the pursuit of employment.

Secondary school can be enough to put anyone off education. From the torment of peer pressure to a lack of learning support, sometimes it just isn’t the right fit. That doesn’t mean you have to give up though. I left school without any formal qualifications but learning in a different environment has helped things fall into place for me and I’ve been offered a place at university to study psychology. I’ve learnt a lot but perhaps more importantly, I have changed personally. I’m more open-minded and I really think about things before forming an opinion.

I knew it would be about more than just the course. To meet more People Like You, visit our YouTube playlist.
I thought fitting in and being part of a college environment would be tough but in the end I took to it like a duck to water. Further education is about more than just studying, although that is obviously a big part of it. In addition to my own course work, I decided to take on the role of course representative, which meant supporting other learners and helping them adapt to the challenges of further education.
See Carol’s video on Aurasma, the Smartphone app.
I found this really rewarding and it made my business studies course a truly unique experience.
