Welcome to Birmingham Metropolitan College

I am very proud to be leading this institution which is one of the largest providers of further and higher education in the country. We have three main campuses (Matthew Boulton, Sutton Coldfield and James Watt) plus satellite centres which cover north, south and central Birmingham. We provide outstanding educational opportunities for our 8,500 full-time 16-19 learners and our 35,000 full and part-time adult learners. Considerable investment in our campuses has been made over the past year in order to meet the needs of our growing student population. This includes a refurbishment of our Sutton Coldfield and James Watt Campuses and upgrading of our Erdington and Castle Vale Skills Centres. This year also saw the launch of our Samsung Digital Service Academy at our Matthew Boulton Campus which won the RIBA Design Excellence and Innovation Award and has received a number of accolades for its innovative use of learning space. Our aim is to support, guide, encourage and teach our learners to the best of our ability. We will continue to be an inspirational organisation delivering excellence by giving learners the opportunity to excel in all that they study. We are also supporting the regeneration of the local area by working in partnership with employers to help fill the regional skills gap. This is an exciting time for everyone involved with Birmingham Metropolitan College. The buildings and facilities at Birmingham Metropolitan College have everything you would expect from a modern, progressive college. Our city based Matthew Boulton Campus won the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Further Education Design Excellence Award. This impressive building has many outstanding features - the graphics and print studios, health care clinics and our stunning FEED studios, based in Millennium Point which provide real project collaborations with the fashion, photography and graphic industries. Sutton Coldfield Campus has undergone a refurbishment which has seen an upgraded library, learning resource centre and laboratory facilities that are state of the art. Our art and design curriculum has recently relocated to the Sutton Campus from the Design Centre in Holland Road. It is also the biggest of all our campuses with over 4,000 16-19 year old students, and has many specialist facilities.

James Watt Campus This Campus has been refurbished during the summer break to become the hub for high-technology engineering, construction and utility courses. A Sustainability Centre will be added where learners can undertake qualifications in green and environmental technologies. The campus also includes outstanding facilities for multimedia and games development and hair and beauty, along with new facilities for sports and public services.

College support Free Time Studying at college is not all work and no play. We believe in having a healthy balance between your studies and the social life a college brings. Our students love the College atmosphere, the friendliness of the staff and fellow students, and the fact that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so much you can do in your free time. All campuses have a real feeling of community and a reputation as friendly places. Careers and Student Advice The Student Advice Centre team provides an array of high quality services for you to use during your time with us. Specialist staff are available to give careers advice and guidance and to provide you with information about financial support. If you are unsure which course is best for you, then you should discuss your options with one of the careers advisers, who will provide impartial advice and guidance to help you to choose the course that is right for you. The Centres also provide a wide range of careers information, where you have access to

Higher Education resources to help you make well-informed and realistic decisions about future career plans. Tutorial System During your time at college you will be allocated a Personal Tutor who will support your academic and personal development, and respond to your different needs for help, advice and information. Our pastoral care system is designed to offer you the correct level and type of support you may need. This is achieved by maintaining close links with students so that any problems â&#x20AC;&#x201C; whether academic, personal or social are quickly identified and appropriate solutions offered. Your Personal Tutor will also liaise with your parents so that they are kept fully informed of your progress.

Student Mentors We want all students to have the same opportunities to achieve to their full personal and academic potential. The mentor scheme operates on a one-to-one basis and is designed to remove any possible barriers you might have that are stopping you from reaching your maximum potential, whether the reasons arise from within College or outside. The mentors offer support with, for example, study skills, motivation and time management, and they are committed to helping you overcome any issues you might encounter on the path to successful completion of your course. Counselling Full-time counsellors offer a confidential service to all students. The counsellors are there to listen and support you, whatever the problem.

Learner Development If you require extra help with your studies then our Learner Development programme may well be able to help you. An Additional Support Co-ordinator and a team of support staff are available to assist students who have learning difficulties and disabilities. The support includes help with spoken and/or written language, assessment and help for anyone with dyslexia, support for students who are hearing or sight impaired, help with mobility and help with study support. The additional support staff aim to help you to make the most of your college learning experience, and to help you overcome barriers to achievement.

Bursaries and Care to Learn

How to apply for EMA:

Students living outside the family unit, who need help with paying for childcare, or who are studying under particular financial hardship, should contact Student Services to check whether they could be entitled to additional funding.

First get the application pack from your school, college, Connexions office or by telephoning the free EMA helpline on 080 810 16219 or by visiting the website www.dfes.gov.uk.

Students who are under 19 and are young parents are likely to have their childcare costs met by Care to Learn. Further information can be obtained by contacting the Care to Learn helpline on 0845 600 2809.

Complete the form as soon as possible and send it back to the National EMA Office in the envelope included in the EMA pack.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment that goes straight into your own bank account. The payment is only received if you attend your classes and do well on your course. The amount is based on how much money is coming into your household. EMA is designed to help you with the cost of books, travel and equipment while you continue with your studies at college.

The EMA Office will then confirm the entitlement of EMA and, if you are eligible, you will be sent an EMA contract part 1. You need to give the EMA contract part 1 in to the Student Advice Centre when you are enrolling â&#x20AC;&#x201C; we will then give you information on what to do to make sure you receive your EMA payment every week.

Course level guide For students wishing to undertake qualifications, the following entry requirements will apply: A Level Programme Average Points Scores are calculated by giving points for each GCSE grade - the total points are then divided by the number of grades (min 7 GCSEs). Individual subject areas may set additional requirements. Applicants with an average point score of 5.2 or less should be advised to take a maximum of 3 AS Levels. Applicants with an average point score of 5.3 – 5.5 may be able to take either 3 or 4 AS levels according to the individual student profile and career aspirations, and also subject requirements.

If you decide to study on the A Level programme you will be asked to choose up to 4 different subjects in the first year (if your average points score is 5.6 or above). You will take AS examinations in January and June in your first year of study.

During the second year of study you will drop one of the AS subjects to study A2 qualifications, again with exams in January and June. AS (year 1) and A2 (year 2) qualifications make up a full A Level qualification. If your average points score is between 5.2 and 5.5 you will take 3 or 4 different subjects in the first year and then continue with the A2 subjects in the second year of the course.

Course Description This subject develops studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; knowledge and understanding of accounting theory. It also develops their accounting analytical skills which can be applied to assessing practical accounting problems and providing solutions to these accounting issues. The focus of the course will be on understanding the accounts of private sector organisations, including sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.

Course Description Anthropology is the study of people and what makes us human, contrasting our own society with vastly different cultures across the globe. Students should expect a highly academic subject comprising elements from the natural and social sciences. The biology, evolution, psychology and cultures of mankind will be studied.

Course Description Archaeology is the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the examination of physical remains. Students will learn about survey and excavation, post excavation dating and interpretation, as well as religion and ritual (Prehistoric Europe 30,000BC to AD43) settlement and social organisation, material culture, technology and economics.

Course Description Graphic Design provides access to information of any kind through the use of pictures, symbols and words. The course offers the opportunity to communicate visually using traditional drawing, painting and mixed media techniques alongside computer-generated imagery. Course Description The emphasis of this course is very much on the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;art of photographyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with a creative and experimental approach. Lens and light based media is a form of personal enquiry and expression involving the selection and manipulation of images. Course Description Textiles offers students opportunities to experiment with and create a range of decorative surfaces, fabrics or garments through the practical use of drawing, painting, mixed media, printing, stitching and constructing. As part of their studies, students may be offered the opportunity to visit galleries and attend cultural events in the UK and abroad. Students will learn about domestic textiles, wallpaper and interior design, printed and/or dyed fabric and materials, fashion, constructed textiles and installation textiles.

Course Description Students will develop an understanding of biological facts and principles and gain an appreciation of their significance by studying molecules, cells and systems, inheritance, evolution and ecosystems as well as physiology and the environment.

Course Description This subject introduces students to the concept of the active citizen. Students will explore what their rights and duties are in society and the factors that influence success in a modern world. The political process in the UK will be examined and students will be able to identify and analyse how different institutions affect the communities in which they live. A central theme running through the subject will be how individuals can influence the decision-making process at a local and national level.

Vocational Courses Our vocational courses are work-related qualifications which provide learners with the practical skills and knowledge they need to carry out a particular job. Nationally, more than four million vocational qualifications were awarded last year, which was an increase of over 11% on the previous year. Birmingham Metropolitan College offer vocational qualifications which meet the skills shortages regionally and nationally. The benefits of studying for a vocational qualification is that learners can combine vocational training with traditional classwork, and on completion of their course they can progress on to university with Level 3 qualifications or go into employment in a specific field. Vocational qualifications are offered at all levels from Foundation to Advanced.

METsport Academies The METsport Academy at Birmingham Metropolitan College is an additional programme aimed at those wishing to combine academic studies with individual sports development qualifications. Students will receive up to 10 hours per week of professional sports training alongside a fulltime academic course. All sports will operate from the Sutton Coldfield Campus. The three main objectives of the METsport Academy are: 1. To develop individual and team skills in the chosen sport through professional coaching programmes. 2. To develop coaching skills by taking Governing Body Awards. 3. To play for and represent Birmingham Metropolitan College in local, regional and national competitions.

You can choose any of the following sports: Athletics - Track and Field Gender: M/F Track and Field Athletic Training starts after the Easter Break. Most athletes will be linked with local clubs and will be on personal training programmes. Athletes will be transported to Wyndley Track and sessions will form the focus of time and distance trials. The season will consist of local and regional athletic meets with interRegional and qualification meets in the latter part of the summer term. Endurance and Cross Country Gender: M/F Elite Cross Country, Long Distance Running and Cycling squads will receive additional technical and tactical training. These sessions will be based at Wyndley/Sutton Park and will form the main training sessions for the regional and national meets.

Basketball Gender: M/F Technical training sessions will take place at the Sutton Coldfield Campus in the first half-term. During these sessions, the Head Coach and Assistant Coach will develop an Elite squad and two site- based development squads. The Elite squad will benefit from additional coaching in the Fitness and Integrated Teaching Block (FIT) at SC. Development squad training will continue to take place at the chosen study campus. Players will be fully integrated into all squads and selection for matches will be based on the relevance of the competitions entered. Cricket Gender: M/F Cricket nets start in January in preparation for the Warwickshire Indoor 6 competition. Net practice will continue into the summer term when campuses will facilitate friendly fixtures. An Elite squad will be picked for additional technical training and competitive county fixtures.

EMPS (Elite Mentoring Schemes) Gender: M/F There are talented athletes within the College system who participate in sports such as Archery, Judo, Martial Arts, Rowing and Cycling to name a few. The EMPS programme is designed to support and guide these elite performers through: • Programmes of workshops on topics such as nutrition, psychology, lifestyle advice • Tutorials, designed to support academic lecturers • An additional tutor who is the link between the individual’s study and the sport programmes • Financial support for training kit, coaching sessions and competition entry This programme is available for performers involved in sports not featured in the current METsport academies.

Football Gender: M/F There will be 7 teams operating across all the campuses. Players will take part in technical and tactical training sessions at several facilities including West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Wyndley Leisure Centre and BVGS Playing Fields. Teams operating on Wednesday afternoons will train with coaches associated with the chosen study campus, playing in either ECFA or BCS leagues. All players will be required to take a full part in several training sessions during the week. A further squad will be selected across all campuses to play additional Saturday football representing Team SCC in local leagues. The Ladies’ Football Development Centre will be playing in national competitions and it will be inevitable that some Wednesday mornings will be required for long distance travel commitments.

Golf Gender: M/F The Golf Academy is available for a maximum of 12 golfers – all players are required to have an official handicap and ideally be a member of a local golf club. Selection is based on current handicap and/or playing qualification. Technical coaching sessions take place at the Belfry with the Senior Golf Professional, followed by on-course/player management sessions. Players are transported to/from the study campus direct to the Belfry. Hockey Gender: M/F Technical sessions will take place either at Wyndley or the Coaching, Performance and Therapies (CPT) Block at the Sutton Campus. The squads will play a mixture of male, female and mixed matches in various forms – indoor, outdoor, mixed 7s or 11-a-side.

Netball Gender: F Technical sessions will take place with a number of friendly tri-campus fixtures set up prior to First/Second XI Squad selection.

Rugby Union/League Gender: M Rugby is split into two distinctive seasons. However, players will work on both codes of practice in squad training sessions.

Racquets Sports Gender: M/F This academy includes the sports of Badminton, Squash, Table Tennis and Tennis. Students will initially take part in a series of sessions/trials in the first academic half-term at their chosen study campus.

Technical and Tactical sessions will take place at BVGS Playing Fields – a series of K/O Cups and Friendly fixtures will provide the competition structure in both 10s and 15s.

We have a long-standing tradition of providing training and ensuring a quality supply of new entrants into the local manufacturing, electrical installation, electronics and utilities sectors, as well as the more traditional areas of mechanical engineering. The James Watt Campus is the hub of high technology courses and includes a Sustainability Centre. The Baxi Innovation Academy will add a further layer of courses to the portfolio and will include green technologies, sustainable energies and high technology engineering qualifications. A recently developed specialism is Digital Aerial Installation where we are seen as the National Lead College and we were selected by the Department of Trade and Industry and the National Learning and Skills Council as the Hub for the roll-out of Digital Aerial Installation in advance of the planned switchover between now and 2012. As the digital technology sector has continued to grow the College has expanded the digital suites with the addition of a new Samsung Digital Service
