Lorraine Hutchinson “After being made redundant from my job as a legal secretary, I knew that this was the ideal opportunity for me to gain new qualifications. I truly believe that this is something that would not have been possible for me without the qualifications I’d gained at Birmingham Met.”
“Returning to college opened my eyes up to all the different learning opportunities available to me. Having always been interested in the role of a professional counsellor, I’ve applied to university to study a foundation degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy.”

Early Years and Childcare
Lorraine Sparks Lorraine returned to education after a nine-year gap and has now gained a place at university to complete a teaching degree after embarking on an Early Years foundation degree which was preceded by level 2 and 3 CACHE teaching assistant qualifications. “Working with children has been my career ambition for as long as I can remember, so I’m thrilled to be another step closer to reaching my goal.”
“Although I went straight into employment once I’d finished my GCSE’s, I still had high hopes of training as a teacher. However before I knew it, time had gone by and I had spent a few years working in cleaning, catering and administration. At the age of 25, I realised enough was enough and that I’d apply to study parttime and see where it would lead me.”

Zhiar Rostam Zhiar had very little formal schooling in his home country, Iraq so studying ESOL at the College’s Language Centre in Highgate was his first full experience of education; something he embraced well.

Terrence Salmon Maintenance engineer, Terrence completed the BTEC National Certificate in Manufacturing. “I hope that achieving this qualification will prove to others that it’s never too late to come back into education and begin something new.”
“I’d been a storeman and general assistant at Solihull Hospital for 22 years, so I relished the opportunity to return to education and study a qualification that would broaden my knowledge and put my professional experiences into a wider industry context.”

Siobhan Brindley Siobhan successfully progressed from a level 2 fitness instructor course to the Diploma in Personal Training. “My course involves theory work based around the human body and anatomy, along with practical sessions on how to teach effectively and interact with clients,” she explained.
“Training clients on a regular one to one basis in the gym at the James Watt Campus has given me lots of confidence. It’s also made me keen to work with different athletes from runners to disabled people.”

Donald McCarther Donald gained employment as a cleaner at Birmingham’s Mailbox after completing numerous qualifications in vocational cleaning.
“Although I had already worked as a cleaner before, I was amazed at how much I still needed to learn about cleaning. I would highly recommend these courses to other unemployed people. It could change your life for the better – it has for me.”
