Best Ever Results Students and staff celebrated the best ever A Level examination results in Summer 2011. The results showed an overall pass rate of 96% across all A Level subjects with 19 A Level subjects achieving a pass rate of 100%. Over 1,800 students studied AS and A Levels and the excellent results achieved reflected the hard work of both students and staff.

A Levels These are the traditional academic route to UK Universities. A Levels are two-year programmes where 3 or 4 subjects will be studied in the first year (AS level) and 3 subjects in the second year (A2 level). BTEC Diplomas Vocational courses such as BTEC National Diplomas offer an alternative route into University in the UK. The difference between these and A Levels is that the majority of the work undertaken on vocational courses is usually assessed through practical tasks, assignments and coursework rather than external examinations. International Foundation Programmes (IFPs) and Access Courses These are one year programmes which progress students to University. These programmes are ideally suited to students from countries with a 12- year education system which falls short of UK University entrance requirements. Higher National Diplomas (HND) and Foundation Degrees (FD) These are two-year courses equivalent to either the first or second year of a degree course.

Full Time English Programmes Before starting a full time advanced level course at Birmingham Metropolitan College you may choose to attend intensive English classes to improve your English language skills as well as develop study techniques to prepare you for Advanced Level study. The College is accredited by the British Council.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) As a British Council Accredited English Language Centre for the teaching of ESOL, we offer 5 levels of English classes, and our students study up to 13 hours per week plus 3

hours IELTS to improve their English language skills before joining a subject related course.

IELTS IELTS is the International Testing System. It measures your ability to communicate across all four languages skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking. IELTS is delivered in addition to your main ESOL classes. The programme includes IELTS language skills, exam preparation and tutorial. About Our Courses Our students will be encouraged to participate in active learning. The emphasis in these classes is on communication with attention to accuracy in speech and writing. Each student is provided with an individual learning plan which is reviewed regularly. All students except those from a majority English-speaking country will be required to undergo English Language testing and achieve minimum IELTs 4.0 for English studies and IELTs 5.0-6.0 (or equivalent) for other courses.

Our summer schools are for students who wish to improve their English language skills in the UK. Academic English is for students who would like to study an academic course. The Activity English summer school is designed to give students a taste of life in the UK and contains many fun activities >> Academic English This two week training course is suitable for students who want to improve their English language skills so they can progress onto the next level of course.

Activity English This two week course is for learners who want to improve their English Language Skills, and who would like to participate in cultural activities such as visits to the Houses of

Parliament, Stratford-upon-Avon, and a variety of sporting events. Summer school courses are a great way to develop your English and prepare for academic study, take additional courses and enjoy student life. They provide an invaluable experience to international students while they are in the UK. You will learn English by studying at your own individual level while staying in England.

International an understanding of the spoken and written language development of children. The course comprises an examination and coursework tasks.

A Levels Accounting This subject develops students’ knowledge and understanding of accounting theory and develops their accounting analytical skills which can be applied to assessing practical accounting problems and providing solutions to these accounting issues.

Anthropology Anthropology is the study of people and what makes us human; contrasting our own society with vastly different cultures across the globe. This is a highly academic subject comprising elements from the natural and social sciences.

Archaeology Archaeology is the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the examination of physical remains. Students will learn about survey and excavation, post excavation dating and interpretation.

Art & Design - Fine Art Fine Art involves making a practical and personal response to ideas and concepts through the vehicle of drawing, painting, mixed media, collage, sculpture and printmaking.

Art & Design - Graphic Design Graphic Design provides access to information of any kind through the use of pictures, symbols and words. The course offers the opportunity to communicate visually using traditional drawing, painting and mixed media techniques alongside computergenerated imagery.

Art & Design Photography

English Language & Literature Business Studies The course examines the role of the business organisation in a modern economy and focuses on the key areas of business activity, including financial management, marketing, personnel and production management. A key theme running through the course will be the promotion of enterprise activities in a modern economy.

Chemistry

The emphasis of this course is very much on the ‘art of photography’ with a creative and experimental approach. Lens and light based media is a form of personal enquiry and expression involving the selection and manipulation of images.

Students will understand the impact that chemistry has had on their lives and that without it their lifestyles as they know them would be impossible. They will also learn about the opportunities for well qualified chemists beyond the medical and pharmaceutical professions.

Biology

Computing

Students will develop an understanding of biological facts and principles and gain an appreciation of their significance by studying molecules, cells and systems, inheritance, evolution and ecosystems, as well as physiology and the environment.

This is a computer science course that includes a major software engineering/programming component using languages such as Visual Basic NET/C#.NET and is designed to prepare students for a career as a specialist in areas such as software engineering, programming or systems analysis.

Drama & Theatre Studies This popular course of study encourages students to develop their performance skills through a range of practical, theoretical and analytical activities. Students will be expected to dedicate time outside of normal timetabled sessions for rehearsals.

Economics The subject examines how wealth is created and distributed in a modern economy, and students will be introduced to different economic principles and theories which will allow them to develop their own ideas and opinions. Topical economic issues include the environment, the European Union, government taxation policy and road pricing.

Electronics This subject encourages students to develop essential knowledge and understanding of concepts of electronics and the skills needed for the use of these in new and changing situations.

English Language Students will learn how to analyse a variety of written texts and develop

Students will explore the relationship between language and literature through a wide range of reading opportunities, including prose and poetry. They will also develop their skills as independent, confident and reflective writers.

English Literature Students will develop their interest and enjoyment of literature through studying a variety of texts including prose, drama and poetry. They will develop their skills as independent, confident and reflective writers.

French This subject is based on the study of topics related to modern French culture and society. Students will widen and deepen their understanding of written and spoken French and will learn to communicate effectively in the language.

Geography This subject provides students with an opportunity to increase their understanding of various physical and human environments. Geographers study the links between the various aspects of these environments and how they operate as complex systems.

German

Mathematics

This subject is based on the study of topics related to modern culture and society in German-speaking countries. Students will widen and deepen their understanding of written and spoken German and will learn to communicate effectively in the language.

Students will spend two-thirds of their time studying core mathematics. The rest of the time will be spent studying the optional module of statistics or mechanics. Students studying AS Level Physics must choose mechanics whereas for business or accounting students, statistics is the preferred choice.

Government & Politics This subject aims to develop an understanding of how the UK government works and how people can participate in the political process through organisations such as pressure groups and political parties and through political ideologies including liberalism, socialism, conservatism and anarchism.

History This subject will help students develop a greater awareness of the world around them since many of the events studied have changed the course of the 20th century.

Information & Communication Technology (ICT)

Mathematics – Further This is a course for students who enjoy Mathematics and want to learn more. Students will spend one third of their time studying pure Mathematics and the remainder studying two further application modules.

Media Studies This subject combines practical production work with established theory and media debates. Students will study the mass media especially film, television, radio and the press.

Philosophy

This subject will introduce students to the various hardware and software technologies used in ICT and how to apply them to different applications in real life.

Philosophy literally means the love of wisdom and during the course students will consider where we gain knowledge from, how the mind organises experience, the concept of God and how we perceive the world. Modules include reason and experience, the idea of God, God and the world and knowledge of the external world.

Law

Physics

This subject gives a detailed introduction to the workings of the English legal system. Students will explore the areas of criminal law and the law of tort.

The subject provides an excellent platform for those wishing to continue with the study of pure and applied science at degree level either as their main or as a subsidiary subject. It is

an essential requirement for a career in opthalmics, engineering or astronomy.

Psychology This course introduces students to some of the issues that psychologists are interested in explaining when examining human thinking and behaviour. Note: Psychology may be an acceptable Science A Level for entrance into medical professions.

Religious Studies Religious Studies is the study of religion and its impact on culture and human experience as well as its role in ethical decision-making. Students will study ethics and cultures and religion in contemporary society.

Sociology Sociology is about societies - how and why they have come to be the way they are, how they can be compared and how they can be studied. Students will study culture, identity and socialisation.

We have 30 scholarships of varying amounts (approx £1,000 per learner). These are open to new students only and are based on academic merit. Scholarships will entitle the successful applicants to £1,000 reduction of the first year tuition fees

Eligibility and Award Criteria • You must hold an offer of a study place and begin your course of

studies at the beginning of the academic year • You must be self-funding and classified as overseas for tuition fee purposes • The scholarships will be awarded automatically - no application is required in first or subsequent years. • The scholarships will be awarded unconditionally in the first year of studies. Awards in subsequent years of study are subject to availability of funds and achievement of 70% overall average mark
