Why Birmingham?

Why BMET? scene covers all genres; the city is bursting with R & B, drum and bass, rock, 70’s & 80’s, indie, jazz, soul, garage and even classical hosted at the Birmingham Symphony Hall, one of the world’s finest concert halls. The O2 Academy, NIA and LG arena also feature some of the world’s most popular contemporary performers. Birmingham is one of the three most popular places to shop in the UK and has a fine tradition of shopping amenities, playing host to the renowned Bullring, one of Europe’s largest shopping developments, the Mailbox, and the historic Jewellery Quarter.

Birmingham is the UK’s second largest city. It is a lively, dynamic, multicultural metropolitan city offering a world class cultural scene, superb shopping, fantastic nightlife and access to some of the UK’s most breathtaking countryside >>

The power of collaboration is behind some of Birmingham’s biggest achievements. In the 18th century for example, scientists, inventors and natural philosophers Erasmus Darwin, Matthew Boulton, James Watt, Joseph Priestley and Josiah Wedgwood would gather in Birmingham and engage in intellectual debates - their conversations were the brainpower behind the Industrial Revolution. Pioneered by this esteemed group of Birmingham industrialists, the Lunar Society still exists today and their

dynamic spirit for collaboration can be felt across the city. Birmingham is one of the most exciting cities in the UK. It is a popular tourist attraction and each year more than 22 million people visit the city. The city is tailored to students’ needs; it has one of the youngest populations in the world with under 25’s accounting for nearly 40% of its population. The city is also rich in its cultural diversity as 33% of its population are of minority ethnic origin.

Air, road and rail connections provide city access to 400 million people across Europe and there are 126 direct connections from Birmingham Airport. There is always something to do whatever your preference with plenty of bars and clubs located on the well known Broad Street, Mailbox and Brindley Place areas. Cafes and restaurants situated all over the city offer every type of cuisine imaginable. The diversity of the music

Birmingham is also host to many great events and shows and has an artistic scene that reflects an alternative side of the city. The Alexandra, Hippodrome and Birmingham Repertory Theatres feature a wide range of productions and performances and the many art galleries really encapsulate the city’s modernisation.

A Levels These are the traditional academic route to UK Universities. A Levels are two-year programmes where 3 or 4 subjects will be studied in the first year (AS level) and 3 subjects in the second year (A2 level). BTEC Diplomas Vocational courses such as BTEC National Diplomas offer an alternative route into University in the UK. The difference between these and A Levels is that the majority of the work undertaken on vocational courses is usually assessed through practical tasks, assignments and coursework rather than external examinations. International Foundation Programmes (IFPs) and Access Courses These are one year programmes which progress students to University. These programmes are ideally suited to students from countries with a 12- year education system which falls short of UK University entrance requirements. Higher National Diplomas (HND) and Foundation Degrees (FD) These are two-year courses equivalent to either the first or second year of a degree course.

This is an example of typical study routes for international students. Other combinations are possible. Please contact our International Office for further information int.office@bmetc.ac.uk or our website www.bmetc.ac.uk
