ORKSHOP AT THE BMHC The British Muslim Heritage Centre organised a fantastic Islamic art workshop; a half-day Paper Marbling-Ebru workshop on 6th December 2014. EBRU - Paper Marbling is the art of creating colourful patterns by sprinkling and brushing colour pigments on a tray of oily water (viscous solution known as ‘size’) and then transforming this pattern to an absorbent surface, such as paper or fabric. This traditional Turkish Art (it is believed to be invented in the 12th century) has recently been listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2014. The workshop started with a talk about ‘The History of Ebru Art’ given by Professor Salim
of 17th and 18th January 2015. To find out more information or to register for the course please visit
Ayduz who is a well-known scholar in the field of Islamic Science and History; particularly specialising in the history of Ottoman Science, Technology and civilization. This informative talk was followed with a short presentation about the necessary materials for EBRU, given by Yusuf Kurt who was the instructor of the workshop. The instructor then showed how to do certain patterns on water and transfer onto paper. Once a basic understanding was built, participants were all given a chance to practice it one by one with the instructor. Due to the limited number of spaces, we could only accommodate 25 people on the workshop.

ISLAMIC GEOMETRIC PATTERNS WORKSHOP After the success of the first workshop which was held in May 2014 and by popular demand, the British Muslim Heritage Centre (BMHC) organised a half-day workshops on Islamic Geometric Patterns in Art and Architecture. The workshop was held on Sunday 19th October 2014 and presented by Hasret Brown from Birmingham, who is an expert on the subject. During the workshop students were taught how to develop unique and practical skills in constructing and recreating a pattern by the use of a traditional compass and ruler. Hasret Brown inspired students to apply individual creativity to their designs through the application of colour and then explored methods to tessellate the patterns to a larger scale. By the end of the workshop, students had all individually created some fantastic geometric designs from the same pattern, which was all bought together and tessellated on to a canvas to create a larger piece of wonderful Islamic art.
TIES CONFERENCE On Saturday 1st November 2014, the British Muslim Heritage Centre (BMHC) in partnership with TIES held a full-day conference with the aim of helping organisations working with new Muslims to network and collaborate. The main theme of the conference was ‘to build a brighter future for new Muslims in the UK’. TIES is a newly formed social and charitable British organisation that aims to encourage all social and community partners to form partnerships to collaborate with each other in order to support the social stability and cultural variety of the British society as whole. More than 20 organisations from across the UK came together to showcase their projects and initiatives for new Muslims.
