According to an ancient saying, Semel in anno licet insanire - you are allowed to go crazy once a year. In this issue we celebrate everything that is outside the box, and all those pioneers who dare to dare. All things wild. We go off the beaten track to explore the wildest lands - and seas. We sail on board Explorer yachts and Expedition vessels, as comfortable and luxurious inside as they are tough and Spartan outside. They are designed to face the challenge of less conventional routes, even the polar oceans - the same waters that are crossed, this time under sail, by competitors in the Vendée Globe, the world’s most demanding sail yacht race, a single-handed round-the-world contest with no stops or assistance. It is such a gruelling challenge that only half of those who start make it to cross the finish line. The percentage is higher, though, for the motorbike road racers competing in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, the legendary TT races, the oldest road race for two wheels, first contested in 1907. We also celebrate one of the demi-gods whose name has been engraved on many trophies, but eventually paid the highest price of all - his life. Exactly twenty years ago motor racing icon Ayrton Senna, the shy young Brazilian who could pilot his Formula 1 car through the driving rain with unsurpassed skill. And water is also a dominant theme in our feature on Christy Lee Rogers, the photographer whose work expresses a reality filtered through the element that embraces us all during the earliest days of our life. And the work of another photographer, the Spaniard Tania Abitbol, narrates the poetry to be found in every corner of the world, from Zanzibar to Myanmar. A sort of grand tour of beauty by a former pro golfer who put away her clubs to devote herself to the lens. And while some may obey the saying and allow themselves to indulge their longing for the wild only once a year, others have transformed it into a lifestyle choice. One of these is the “punk Marilyn” Debbie Harry, the frontwoman of Blondie, a cult band of the 1970s who this year is celebrating forty years of success. Another is someone you would thoughtlessly describe as a nerd, if you were unaware of the kind of life he has led - software entrepreneur and antivirus pioneer John McAfee, who now poses for the photographer nude, tattooed, cradling a pump-action shotgun in one arm and a girl in the other, with the tropical forest in the background. And in this issue we also celebrate the people who every day combat nature’s wilder elements, Ibiza’s firefighters and the people of its forestry corps, everyday heroes who put their lives in danger to defend us from the wild savagery of fire. We have also interviewed chef Paco Roncero who takes dining to a whole new subliminal level for a wild gastronomic experience. And finally, fashion has become a world of wild beasts and feral cries from leopard prints to snake skins, we have transformed the idea of the cement jungle into reality. And what could be more wild, more savage than an urban animal slinking purposefully through an environment of extreme architecture, a hunting ground of steel and glass? On each and every page of this issue, Blue Marlin Ibiza invites you to take a walk on the wild side. Enjoy!

Semel in anno licet insanire, decían los latinos: una vez al año es lícito cometer locuras. En este número festejamos todo aquello que esté afuera de los esquemas y a todos los que osan estarlo. Todas cosas salvajes. Abandonamos los caminos ya trazados para explorar los páramos más salvajes. Mejor dicho los mares más salvajes. Navegamos a bordo de los explorer y de los expedition vessel, yates de lujo y confort por dentro y muy duros por fuera. Pensados para enfrentar los mares menos convencionales y hasta los océanos árticos. Son las mismas olas atravesadas en el Vendée Globe por embarcaciones a vela, la regata de veleros más peligrosa del mundo: la vuelta al mundo en solitario sin escalas y sin asistencia. Una competencia tan ardua que solamente la mitad de los participantes logra completarla. Algo más alto es el porcentaje de los centauros que llegan a terminar la carrera Tourist Trophy en la Isla de Man, la mítica TT, la competencia por carretera más antigua sobre dos ruedas que se realiza desde 1907. Celebramos también uno de los semidioses que dejaron escrito su nombre bajo el trofeo pagando con el precio absolutamente más alto: su propia vida. Son exactamente 20 años sin Ayrton Senna, uno de los iconos de los deportes a motor, aunque sobre cuatro ruedas, aquel joven tímido brasileño que desafió las lluvias incesantes como jamás nadie lo hizo. Y bajo el agua nos quedamos junto a Christy Lee Rogers, la artista del objetivo que con sus fotografías relee la realidad filtrada por el elemento líquido madre de todos nosotros. Y también es una fotógrafa la española Tania Abitbol, a quien le encomendamos la tarea de contarnos la poesía que se encuentra en cada lugar del mundo, desde Zanzíbar hasta Birmania. Una especie de grand tour de la belleza realizado por una ex golfista profesional quien luego de haber decidido colgar el palo tomó una máquina fotográfica. Y si para algunos el lado salvaje se realiza semel in anno, hay quienes lo transformaron en el leit motif de su propia existencia. Hablamos de quien podéis pensar en una vida wild, la Marilyn del punk Debbie Harry, frontwoman de los Blondie, grupo cult de los ’70 que este año festeja sus 40 años de éxitos. También de aquel que si no sabéis qué vida ha llevado podrías pensar en un nerd: John McAfee – el empresario del software, pionero del antivirus – hoy se ofrece al fotógrafo desnudo, tatuado, en una mano con una escopeta y en la otra con una muchacha y a sus espaldas un paisaje tropical. Y en este número homenajeamos también a aquellos que luchan todo los días con la parte salvaje de la naturaleza, los bomberos y los hombres del cuerpo forestal de Ibiza, héroes cotidianos que arriesgan sus vidas para defendernos de la furia salvaje del fuego. Además hemos entrevistado al chef Paco Roncero que lleva el acto de comer a un nivel completamente nuevo y subliminal, una experiencia gastronómica fuera de los límites convencionales. Por último, la moda se transforma en un bestiario: desde fantasías de leopardo hasta pieles de serpiente, hicimos realidad el concepto de jungla de cemento: ¿hay algo más wild que un animal urbano se mueva en su ambiente hecho con arquitecturas extremas donde se alternan cristales y acero? Once upon a time there lived a pair of adverbs called Wildly and Madly. Wildly and Madly first encountered each other in a wonderful world of the most innovative trends - their eyes met, they reached out and fell in love. Their union resulted in a brilliant flash of inspiration that has left its mark on the history of style. And so that’s how we can describe - complete with fairytale beginning - everything that’s coming our way for the colder season. Crazy, inspired, very definitely animal prints and especially vertiginous heels. Though the summer season still sometimes harks back to classic styles, offering a rediscovery of deeply traditional femininity with pointed toes, tapered shapes and minimal sandals, the winter collections are ready to turn the trends on their head - and set our heads spinning. The dual watchword is wildly and madly, in every particular. So we’re talking about pumps with exaggerated features, colours and shades with a strong feel of the animal world, unexpected, provocative and - why not? - slightly aggressive. The theme? The emphasis is on the unexpected, and a desire for the unusual - and the most appropriate verb is...to surprise. Había una vez una pareja de adverbios en inglés wildly (ferozmente) y madly (locamente). Los dos se encontraron entre medio de las tendencias más novedosas de la moda, se miraron, se juntaron y se enamoraron. De aquella unión nació un toque de inspiración superlativo que marcó la huella en la carretera del estilo. Podemos describir de esta manera y con una consigna fantasiosa, todo aquello que llegará a nuestros pies para la estación mas fría. Locura, excentricidad, absolutamente animal print pero sobre todo tacones exagerados. Al contrario de la estación de verano donde se vieron detalles clásicos y donde se redescubrió la femineidad más tradicional a través de puntas, formas ceñidas y sandalias minimalistas, la moda invernal da vueltas completamente esa tendencia… Y la cabeza también! La nueva consigna es doble: wildly and madly en cada detalle. Los pumps son más exagerados, los colores y los matices traen inspiración del mundo animal, los detalles son sorprendentes, provocantes y por qué no también agresivos. ¿Cuál es el leimotiv? La sensualidad al máximo. Las miradas llegan desde lo alto, todo es una peculiaridad, incrustaciones, particularidades y … vértigo! Las alturas son extraordinarias, los retoques excesivos. Los naipes jugados son los del asombro y los de ser inusual. El verbo justo: sorprender. El acelerador apunta a piernas sexys y fuertes, de fuerte impacto animal y de gusto salvaje. They flaunt their style with a swagger, roaring out their response to the call of current trends. They are adorned with feathers, leathers, layers of heavy fabric. They hide amid the jungle tones, blending with the earth, the leaves and the colours of the swamps that surround them. They are the wild, sexy women that winter has selected as icons of luxury, the most creative and fearless of their kind, women who rip apart the rulebook of formality and sobriety, of course. Driven by their animalistic strength, and the instinct and display of a purely feminine courage, they seem to form an army of primitive heroines, imagined with a wild yet precious armour that evokes the uniqueness and implacability of Mother Nature. Small wonder that even the most “Parisian” of the Made in Italy labels have been seduced by the feral call of the winter to come. Giambattista Valli creates sophisticated animal prints, echoing the most intense of Alexander McQueen’s “Savage Beauty” creations, transporting us into a wildly creative, slightly sinister world, but one we love with all our heart. Forest echoes and nocturnal creatures seem to create an untamed, romantic beauty. The dresses are long, resembling the flowing manes of ferocious, exotic animals, or the plumage of tropical birds. A world from outside our knowledge, throbbing to the rhythm of a magical ritual. Violet, black, and green form the plumage of an opulent peacock, while interwoven whites and softer tones emblazon the garments of these untamed goddesses. The strength and vitality of the earth, greeting the winter in style.

During the winter season, too, men’s fashion is less tightly bound up with formality, but left free to express itself, no rules, no codes. You could talk about a new wild spirit that’s not so much about patterns or cut, but rather the ability to make certain quintessentially classic items more provocative and indefinite. And it’s in that spirit that Alexander McQueen brings back for the winter season the more classic touch of the total black coat - but his version is freed from the bonds of severity to make it bleaker, almost demonic, a combination of a man and an extra-terrestrial being who has come to Earth dressed to impress in his finest outfit. Belstaff also makes its free-spirited contribution, and accompanying the padded and biker jackets this year the trend veers towards sheepskin or even a more extreme offer of cloaks with a touch of wild ferocity about them. And for those still entertaining doubts about the most intuitively appealing and least codified achievements of the past, there is Canali’s display window - shawl collars in the foreground, scarves and maxi-bags, all with a soft effect - flannel, velvet, mohair and even a touch of fur embellishing the coat lapels. Plus a range of accessories to enhance the new season’s changing scene - ankle boots, short boots, all with more volume, all richly supplied with wonderfully warm details. Her works take us on a kaleidoscopic journey into an enchanting world of otherworldly creatures and untamed nature at its most beautiful. Inspired by the magic of wildlife, Polish-born Ewa Goral paints hypnotic sceneries, a blend of vivid colours and surreal shapes. The circular canvases symbolise the cyclical nature of plants in all their loveliness. But beauty can be deceptive. Behind the purity of a flower lies a more sinister aspect. Wonderful and seductive at first, the mysterious floral world reveals a hidden and at times dangerous nature. A rose may appear to be made of delicate petals but underneath it reveals menacing thorns. The artist seems to be on a mission to discover the darker side of nature and the depths of her imagination. She takes an unapologetic stance against the world of commercialization, the world that offers us only false realities. Ewa’s interests are now directed towards ethno-botany, the study of the connections between people and plants. This is having an impact on her latest work, recently on show in the “Second Nature” exhibition at the Espacio Gallery during the Chelsea Fringe Festival in London. A fresh look at some elements of the natural world. After studying visual arts in Naleczow, Poland, Ewa attended the faculty of painting and drawing at Krakow’s Fine Arts Academy, developing her unique style and vision while studying graphic design and painting. Goral’s fantastical paintings have been exhibited in Berlin, London and in Warsaw, Krakow, Bielsko-Biala and Tarnowskie Gory in Poland. Ewa is one to watch among the myriad of yet-to-be discovered artists with raw talent who are driving the beat of London’s artistic pulse.
Su obra nos adentra en un viaje caleidoscópico por un mundo mágico de criaturas sobrenaturales y naturaleza indómita en su máximo esplendor. Inspirada en la magia de la naturaleza salvaje, Ewa Goral, polaca de nacimiento, pinta escenas hipnóticas con una combinación de colores vivos y formas surrealistas. Los lienzos circulares simbolizan la naturaleza cíclica de las plantas más bellas. Pero la belleza puede resultar engañosa. Tras la pureza de una flor se esconde algo siniestro. Maravilloso y seductor en un primer momento, el misterioso mundo floral revela una naturaleza oculta y en ocasiones peligrosa. Una rosa parece hecha de delicados pétalos, pero por debajo esconde espinas amenazadoras. La misión de esta artista es descubrir el lado más oscuro de la naturaleza y las profundidades de su imaginación. Ewa adopta una postura sin concesiones contra el mundo de la comercialización, un mundo que sólo ofrece realidades falsas. Actualmente Ewa se interesa por la etnobotánica (el estudio de las conexiones entre el ser humano y las plantas). Esto se refleja en su último trabajo, presentado recientemente en la exposición “Second Nature” en la galería de arte Espacio con motivo del Festival Chelsea Fringe de Londres. Una nueva mirada sobre algunos elementos del mundo natural. Tras cursar Artes Visuales en Naleczow (Polonia), Ewa estudió en la Facultad de Pintura y Dibujo de la Academia de Bellas Artes de Cracovia, donde desarrolló su estilo único mientras estudiaba diseño gráfico y pintura. INFECTED BY THE VIRUS OF SUCCESS
The return of primates to the big screen marks a resumption in the never-ending struggle for the survival of the species. July 17 sees the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, a new chapter in the moneymaking franchise based on the 1963 book by Pierre Boulle. There’s already an explosion of hype around the 2016 episode of the saga, to be directed by Matt Reeves. Although this is Reeves’s debut with apes, Cloverfield showed he is capable of bringing in a successful blockbuster catastrophe movie. In the film we return to Caesar and the rebel chimpanzees ten years after the events depicted in Rupert Wyatt’s Planet of the Apes. The artificial virus that had given them a superior intelligence is now causing a pandemic that has almost wiped out the human race. The chimps, who have an enviably high IQ, are numerous and organised, and have formed a hierarchical society led by Caesar (Andy Serkis). He is called to negotiate with the surviving humans, but it is doomed to be a fragile peace - other clashes are on the horizon, determining the new racial pecking order in an even more pitiless conflict than the first revolt.
Why to see it: because we miss James Franco, but Gary Oldman as Dreyfus is bound to make up for it.

Los simios con un cociente intelectual envidiable son muchos, están bien organizados y forman una sociedad jerárquica donde Caesar (Andy Serkis) es su líder y su misión es ser el intermediario con el pequeño grupo de sobrevivientes humanos. La paz alcanzada será muy frágil pues se vislumbran en el horizonte más luchas para establecer cual es la verdadera raza dominante. Dive in, and let the crystal-clear waters in Ibiza and Formentera spirit you away to a magical world of wild, fascinating beauty. A coastline almost 300 km long, great weather conditions and excellent underwater visibility make this part of the Mediterranean a genuine delight for divers from all around the world. Large meadows of Posidonia oceanica blanket vast sections of the seabed, providing a unique habitat for the numerous animal species that divers encounter under water. Although diving is a great option all year round, the sea is at its most stunning during the late summer season (mid-September to late October). That’s when the posidonia, a seagrass species that is vital to the ecosystem, starts flowering and large schools of fish attract predators to the area. This fragile paradise must be cared for and respected. In fact, preservation is one of the key themes emphasised by Manu San Félix, a prestigious marine biologist and director of underwater imaging for National Geographic. He has lived on Ibiza and Formentera for more than 20 years. Posidonia “makes our beaches larger, more stable and more attractive”, says the biologist, hence the need for its preservation. Two critical actions can contribute to preserving the species - respect regulated anchorage rules and avoid dumping waste into the sea. These are just a few of the experiences to be enjoyed at Sublimotion, the new restaurant at the Hard Rock Hotel in Ibiza that combines culinary excellence and video mapping. We spoke to the creator of this ‘gastro-sensory’ experience and one of Spain’s most prestigious chefs, Paco Roncero - a demanding, daring visionary. How did you come up with the idea of Sublimotion? I have something similar based on this concept in Madrid, which is where I came up with the idea: somewhere to do research on what we eat in relation to our surroundings. With this in mind, we try to make sure our customers experience different atmospheres surrounding the dishes. Reproducing emotions through the senses. As if it was a theatrical show, but from a gastronomic point of view. Why did you choose Ibiza? I was impressed by the movement on this island on all levels. The idea was to take the concept to different cities around the world. Some years ago I went to see “The Lion King” and it inspired me to incorporate theatre into an experience for the senses, connected to the act of eating. I thought about an international city where people are open to new things. Ibiza seemed to be the ideal place in Spain, thanks especially to the support of the Palladium Group and Abel Matutes.
¿Cómo ha surgido la idea de Sublimotion? Tengo un concepto similar en Madrid que es de dónde nace la idea, un espacio de investigación que tiene que ver con lo que uno come en función del ambiente que te rodea. Con este pensamiento intentamos hacer vivir al comensal distintas atmósferas alrededor de los platos. Reproducir emociones desde el mundo sensorial. Como si se tratara de un espectáculo dentro de un teatro pero desde el punto de vista gastronómico. ¿Por qué has elegido Ibiza? Me ha impactado como se mueve esta isla en todos los niveles. La idea era llevar este concepto a diferentes ciudades del mundo. Hace unos años fui a ver el Rey León y me inspiró este concepto de teatralizar una experiencia desde los sentidos unida al acto de comer. Pensé en una ciudad internacional donde la gente esté abierta a propuestas nuevas. Ibiza me pareció el sitio ideal dentro de España, especialmente gracias a la confianza de todo el Grupo Palladium y Abel Matutes.
What kind of cuisine can we expect with a Sublimotion experience? The idea is to serve two meals a day for twelve diners, with dishes offering flavours from different cuisines. It will be a journey where, as well as trying different dishes, people will will experience sampling a chilled appetiser at the North Pole, cooking Japanese noodles themselves, or being in Baroque Versailles.
¿Qué tipo de gastronomía se puede disfrutar en la experiencia Sublimotion? La propuesta es hacer dos comidas por día para doce comensales que incluya los sabores de diferentes tipos de cocina. Será un viaje donde la gente, además de probar distintos platos, estará vivenciando el sentirse en el Polo Norte con un aperitivo frío, cocer ellos mismos unos espaguetis japoneses o sentirse en el Versalles barroco.
Do you think the time has come to modernise Spanish cuisine? The idea is to give Spanish cooking a boost and improve its ranking in world cuisine. I am a great defender of traditional cooking. All avant-garde chefs continue to modernise presentation, but we have retained the traditional characteristics of our cuisine. Countries like France and Italy, whose cooking is offered in more than 30,000 restaurants around the world, are still the benchmark.
¿Crees que llegó el momento de modernizar la cocina española? La idea es potenciar la cocina española y posicionarla en el mundo. Yo soy un gran defensor de la cocina tradicional. Todos los cocineros de vanguardia siguen defendiendo el modernizar la presentación, pero las características tradicionales de nuestra cocina se mantienen. Países como Italia y Francia, que tienen más de 30 mil restaurantes en el mundo, siguen siendo los que marcan la diferencia.

Spanish cuisine is gradually evolving in this direction, although we are already globally renowned for our modern cuisine. Apart from that, I believe that a chef’s job is to make people happy. Tell us about the best moments in the gastro show you have designed. We will use audiovisual and olfactory technology to draw our customers into the dish itself. Although the quality of our raw ingredients is still the most important thing, we will combine colour, temperature, aroma and music to create atmospheres designed to make the tasting a unique gastro/sensory experience. Can you imagine your plate floating in the air? A table that gives off heat and cold? Maybe tasting the sea in your mouth and feeling it all around you? I can’t really explain it, you have to experience it. If this is what you are offering now, what’s in store for us in the future? I see myself as an endurance runner and I believe that, although it is a very big challenge, we are going to make this project work and go far with it. We must constantly think about further innovation. That’s our permanent challenge.
La cocina española está evolucionando hacia esa dirección poco a poco, aunque se nos reconoce globalmente por nuestra cocina moderna. Más allá de esto, creo que el trabajo del cocinero es hacer feliz a la gente. Cuéntanos los mejores momentos del gastro show que has diseñado… Usaremos la tecnología audiovisual y olfativa para trasladar a los clientes al interior de cada plato. Si bien lo más importante sigue siendo la calidad de la materia prima, conjugaremos atmósferas cromáticas, temperaturas, aromas y música pensadas para que la degustación se convierta en una experiencia gastro sensorial única. ¿Imaginas tu plato suspendido en el aire? ¿Y una mesa que desprende calor y frío? ¿Tal vez sentir el mar en tu boca y en todo el ambiente que te rodea?... No se puede explicar, hay que vivirlo. Si esta sugerencia es el presente, ¿con qué nos sorprenderás en un futuro? Soy un corredor de fondo y creo que aunque es un desafío muy grande vamos a hacer funcionar este proyecto llevándolo muy lejos. Siempre debemos pensar en innovar. Ese es el reto constante.

A mark on the planet, a play of light and shadows, a silent dialogue between the figurative and the abstract. This modern megalith comprising 13 columns traces 24-metre circle on Ibizan soil, evidence of one humankind’s earliest preoccupations - measuring time and space.
Una marca en el planeta. Un juego de luz y sombras. Un diálogo silencioso entre lo figurativo y lo abstracto. Este megalítico moderno formado por 13 columnas, dibuja en tierra ibicenca un círculo de 24 metros cuya revelación es una de las más antiguas de la humanidad: medir el tiempo y el espacio.
They say that children take after their parents. Andrew Rogers, creator of this piece of art in Ibiza, is a monumental artist who has left his mark on all the continents with more than twelve works of art that can be seen from the air, and even from space. His “Rhythms of Life” project includes a number of large sculptures, using the world as a blank canvas on which he depicts messages and geoglyphs that become part of the surroundings.
Dicen que los hijos se parecen a sus padres. Andrew Rogers, creador de esta pieza de arte en Ibiza, es un monumental artista que ha dejado su huella en los cinco continentes con más de doce obras que pueden verse desde el aire o incluso desde el espacio. “Rhythms of Life”, así llamó a su proyecto que incluye distintas esculturas a gran escala como si el mundo fuera una especie de lienzo en blanco donde poder representar mensajes y geoglifos integrados al paisaje.
Time & Space, the speed of light is the name chosen by this Australian sculptor for the 450 tonnes of stone, extracted and sculpted in Turkey, that he has brought to the island to create this enormous sundial.
Time & Space, the speed of light (Tiempo y Espacio, la velocidad de la luz) es el título que este escultor australiano ha elegido para las 450 toneladas de piedra, extraídas y talladas en Turquía, que ha traído a la isla para poner en funcionamiento este inmenso reloj solar.
The sculpture casts shadows, and several horizontal lines are carved into the surface of each stone to measure the passing of time as the sunlight moves across the cliff where the work stands. At the top of the highest column, a band of 23 carat gold reflects the sun’s rays at sunset.
La escultura, además de proyectar juegos de sombras, tiene talladas en la piedra varias franjas horizontales que sirven para medir el paso del tiempo a medida que la luz del día avanza sobre el acantilado donde se erige. Además, en la cima del pilar más alto, hay ubicado un paño de oro de 23 kilates que refleja los rayos solares durante el atardecer.

The artist comments that this work of art is based on the “Fibonacci sequence”, named after the 13th century Italian mathematician who developed a numerical series defined as an infinite sequence of natural numbers. The sequence begins 1,1,2,3,5,8..., where each number is the sum of the previous two, a progression replicated in the sacred geometry of flowers.
Según el artista, esta obra está basada en la “Sucesión de Fibonacci”, matemático italiano del siglo XIII que ha elaborado una serie numérica con un proceso infinito de números naturales: la sucesión comienza con los números 1 y 1,1 y a partir de estos, cada término es la suma de los dos anteriores, una suma que habita en la geometría sagrada de las flores.
Over the last 14 years Andrew Rogers has worked on 48 structures in 13 countries, collaborating with over 6,700 people all over the world. The giant horseman in the Gobi desert in China alone required the work of 1,000 soldiers of the People’s Army. In Slovakia, he constructed the outline of a horse, inspired by the image on a 2,000 year old coin found in the local area. His most spectacular piece of art is in Antarctica, near the Dakshin Gangotri glacier - a 60-metre by 60-metre image created using gravel on a frozen lake.
Durante los últimos 14 años, Andrew Rogers ha trabajado en 48 estructuras distribuidas en 13 países. Para ello, ha involucrado a más de 6700 personas en todos los continentes. Sólo para realizar el gran jinete en las colinas del desierto de Gobi en China, empleó a 1000 personas del ejército popular. En Eslovaquia construyó una silueta de un caballo inspirándose en un símbolo de una moneda de 2000 años de antigüedad encontrado en las inmediaciones. Su obra más espectacular se encuentra en la Antártida, a los pies del glaciar de Gangotri Dakshin, una imagen de 60m x 60m hecha con grava en un lago congelado.
For five thousand years, the concept of time and space has been perhaps the most complex puzzle humankind sought to understand with. Andrew Rogers attempts to unravel this mystery through his work of art in Ibiza. As well as shining light on this age-old enigma, he pays homage to the path of the planets as they revolve around the sun.
Desde hace cinco mil años el concepto de tiempo y espacio es para los hombres quizás el misterio más profundo de sus vidas. Andrew Rogers ha intentado dar su respuesta a través de una obra de arte en Ibiza. Además de arrojar luz sobre este viejo interrogante, ha hecho un homenaje a la trayectoria de los planetas que se mueven alrededor del sol.

Panic, fear, anxiety, thermal stress, camaraderie, intense solidarity, unbearable temperatures, heat and struggle are all part of a day’s work for firefighters. They are constantly engaged in an ongoing battle against a natural phenomenon that is surprising, unpredictable, unexpected and, above all, extremely dangerous. A living force that moves at frightening speeds, spreading fire, smoke and flames at incredible temperatures as it tears through an unknown forest. Their mission is to control nature in hellish conditions. They are the “Fire Heroes.” Pánico, miedo, ansiedad, stress térmico, compañerismo, solidaridad extrema, temperaturas insoportables, calor y lucha son los elementos más comunes a los que se enfrentan los “luchadores del fuego”. Siempre en guerra abierta con una naturaleza sorprendente, imprevisible, inesperada y peligrosa… muy peligrosa. Una fuerza viva que se mueve muy rápido, que propaga a temperaturas increíbles el fuego, el humo, el hongo y las llamas… en medio de un bosque desconocido. Controlar la naturaleza en condiciones infernales es su misión. Son los “Héroes del fuego”.
Miguel Sevilla, chief fire officer with the Ibiza fire brigade, and Julio José Argadoña, the forestry engineer who leads the IBANAT in the Balearic Islands and general director of DTEX (technical fire fighting crew), talk to us in a riveting three-way conversation in which they take us through the electrifying situations they have to deal with whenever a wildfire breaks out in Ibiza. The interview heats up as the minutes tick on, and participants show a sense of absolute complicity and shared opinions on the subjects of fire fighting and coordinating ground, sea and air teams to control the havoc that fire wreaks on nature. They share the same feelings and speak with a common voice as they respond to our questions.
Miguel Sevilla, sargento jefe del cuerpo de bomberos de Ibiza y Julio José Argadoña, ingeniero de montes, responsable del IBANAT en las Illes Pitiüses y máximo responsable del DTEX (Dispositivo Técnico de Extinción), analizan en una emocionante charla a tres bandas los momentos electrizantes a los que se enfrentan cada vez que se produce un incendio forestal en Ibiza. La entrevista va subiendo de intensidad a medida que pasan los minutos, de la misma forma que muestran su absoluta complicidad y coincidencia en las labores de extinción y cómo coordinar los dispositivos por tierra, mar y aire para controlar el pavor de la naturaleza. Las respuestas y sensaciones fluyen al unísono.
Their closeness and solidarity become tinged with passionate commitment when recounting some of the darker times they have lived through on the job – specifically, rescuing another officer in a high risk situation. “That’s one of the reasons we work in pairs. You have to be able to make level-headed decisions,” say Miguel and Julio.

Julio and Miguel are almost always the first people to arrive on scene: “People flee in one direction, but we stride boldly towards it to put out the fire,” says Sevilla. “The first few minutes are critical, but they are also extremely risky because we attempt to contain the fire and stop it from spreading. It’s a very perilous situation. We need to raise awareness and stress that people use their common sense. No throwing barbecue ashes into a litter can or burning off stubble in fields. We really appreciate it when people bring us food, water or lend a hand.”
Julio y Miguel son casi siempre los primeros en llegar a un incendio: “Cuando la gente sale huyendo en una dirección, nosotros entramos en sentido contrario para atacar el fuego”, asevera Sevilla. “Los primeros momentos son básicos para atajarlo, también los más arriesgados porque intentas evitar la propagación del incendio y actúas con riesgo. Hay que tratar que la gente tenga sentido común y no haga tonterías como tirar brasas de una barbacoa en un contenedor o quemar rastrojos en el campo sin control. Pese a ello al final se agradece la solidaridad de la gente cuando nos trae comida agua o ayuda” .
They work in very harsh conditions and wear special gear, heavy suits, masks and protective equipment that can weigh up to 30 kilos. A fire hose can exert up to 60 kilograms of force. Controlling it in situations of intense heat in an area of just a few metres with flames angrily consuming the natural landscape requires an incredible amount of physical effort. “Besides the heavy equipment and fire-fighting tools, we also have to factor in extreme summer temperatures that intensify the heat we feel due to the gear, the humidity, the EPIs (individual protection equipment) and the fire. A huge amount of physical effort goes into handling the high-flow hoses in the hot summer months. Fire-fighters can lose up to four kilos on a 24-hour shift and the cumulative thermal stress is just brutal. Safety is not compatible with comfort. When you go to bed after a shift, you wake up feeling like you’ve been run over by a lorry. But you have to shake it off and head back to the wildfire,” says Sevilla, as excitement spreads over his face.
Sus condiciones de trabajo son muy difíciles: ropa especial, trajes pesados, mascaras y equipos de protección pueden llegar a pesar 30 kilos. Una manguera de agua puede soportar hasta 60 kilos de fuerza y requiere un gran esfuerzo físico en medio del insoportable calor y a pocos metros donde la naturaleza brama con furor: “Al peso del equipo y los instrumentos contra incendios hay que añadir el calor reinante en verano, más el que proporciona la ropa, la humedad, los EPI (equipos de protección individual) y el fuego. Frente al calor necesitas mucho caudal de agua y eso requiere un gran esfuerzo físico. Podemos perder hasta cuatro kilos en un turno de 24 horas y el stress térmico acumulado es brutal. La seguridad no es compatible con la comodidad. Cuando dormimos después de un turno nos levantamos como si nos hubiesen dado una paliza en todo el cuerpo y hay que recuperarse y volver al incendio”, señala Sevilla con emoción en su rostro.
“Temperatures are so high that the water from the firefighting aircraft evaporates mid-air and doesn’t even reach the ground, but it does reduce the intensity,” states Julio José, TEX director and the man in charge of directing and coordinating all forest services, firefighters, air services and all the crews and equipment that play a part in putting out large-scale wildfires like the ones that blazed through Morna Valley in 2005, Benirrás in 2010 and recently devastated Cubells. “Every fire starts out as a little blaze that you have to put out. Sometimes you’re in the middle of the incident and realize you’re lost, and that can be very dangerous when dealing with five or six teams at the same time. For those in command, the sense of responsibility overrides the fear,” Julio José states categorically. The fire chief has experienced several critical situations, like a water tanker truck overturning during a high-risk wildfire, or rescuing firefighters trapped and isolated by enormous flames. “You do whatever it takes to save a colleague. Our strategy is to save people and properties, but choosing the best option is complicated. When the job is done and you emerge from the forest full of ash and dirt, you feel an amazing sensation of extreme camaraderie and brotherhood that comes from having successfully fought the fire together,” concludes Miguel on a serious note. Despite all that passion, they don’t see themselves as heroes. “That’s overdoing it. But when things go well, you go home happy. What you see during a wildfire affects your regular life. You have to run from the path of the fire,” concludes Sevilla. The three-way conversation continues for over an hour and becomes more profound and more interesting, heating up as they speak passionately about their professional task, battling a common enemy - wildfires.
“Las temperaturas son tan altas que el agua que tiran los hidroaviones desde el aire no llega el suelo porque se vaporiza en el aire, pero ayuda a rebajar su intensidad” argumenta José Julio, director del TEX, el hombre sobre el que pesa toda la responsabilidad de dirigir y coordinar todos los servicios forestales, bomberos, medios aéreos, atacantes y todos las fuerzas e instrumentos que se suman en un incendio a gran escala como los ocurridos en el valle de Morna en 2005, Beinirrás en 2010 o es Cubells recientemente. “Todos los fuegos son pequeños en principio y hay que ir atajándolos, a veces te metes en sitios que no sabes donde estás y esto puede ser muy peligroso cuando manejas 5 o 6 equipos a la vez. La responsabilidad del mando es terrible, pesa más que el miedo”, asevera rotundamente José Julio. El comandante de los bomberos ha vivido situaciones dramáticas como el vuelco de un camión cisterna en medio de incendio de alto riesgo o el rescate de algunos compañeros aislados en medio de grandes llamas: “Lo dejas todo para salvar al compañero. La estrategia es salvar las personas y las viviendas, pero elegir la mejor opción es complicado. Cuando nuestro trabajo acaba y salimos del bosque negros y llenos de cenizas se observa un fenómeno de compañerismo extremo y un gran hermanamiento por haber luchado codo con codo y con éxito”, concluye Miguel con acento grave. Pese a todo esta pasión no se consideran héroes: “Eso es mucho decir, sin embargo cuando todo sale bien vuelves a casa contento. Lo que ves en un incendio te pasa luego factura en tu vida normal. Hay que correr siempre hacia los lados cuando te ataca un fuego”, concluye Sevilla. La conversación a tres bandas se alarga a más de una hora y se vuelve cada vez más honda, profunda, interesante, llena de calor y pasión por una labor profesional bien hecha contra el enemigo común: el incendio forestal.

Plato claimed that souls choose the body they will be born in, following the dictates of fate. The spirit incarnated by a child born on 1st July, sixty-nine years ago in Miami chose not to remain in the background. Beautiful and sensual, one metre sixty of energy, Debbie Harry was an icon of the 1970s music scene, a role model for rebellious, in-your-face femininity. Adopted by a family from New Jersey, as a child she would imagine she was the secret daughter of Marilyn Monroe - and when she grew up she was hailed by all as the “Punk Marilyn”. She decided to break into the music scene, moved to New York and took a job as secretary in the BBC radio studios. She made her music debut with the whimsical folk rock group The Wind in the Willows. Debbie scratched a living by working as a waitress and nightclub dancer. Working in the Playboy Club of New York led her to feature as a Bunny on the pages of the glossy girlie magazine. But for the ambitious, driven Debbie the role of Playmate wasn’t leading anywhere. Music - becoming a rock singer - was her dream. She kept on searching and joined the all-girl trio “The Stilettos”, where she met guitarist Chris Stein. They fell in love and formed a new band together - Blondie. An explosive mix of punk and disco, the new group quickly made the breakthrough. “Heart of Glass” and “Call Me” set people dancing across the world, while the band’s wild, fascinating frontwoman inspired the fantasies of her male audience. She was Blondie, the bottle-blonde Debbie, although the name actually comes from a comic strip by Chic Young. Be that as it may, she was the punk Marilyn and became a media darling, a singer at a time when there was little room for feisty females. As she recalled in an interview, “When I began to sing in the 1970s, the only reason the rock world wanted people like me was to excite the men. It wasn’t easy to convince people that that I could write songs, sing and perform. If a man appeared on stage zonked out, he was a great guy - when I did the same thing, they laid into me”.

Blondie es solamente ella, la rubia artificial Debbie aunque en realidad el nombre del grupo tiene origen en una historieta de Chic Young. But the really rebellious girls loved her all the same, and began to copy her attitude and look. Even when, during a do-it-yourself attempt to colour her hair, Debbie left some dark streaks. She described the incident in an interview with Lady Gaga - another generational icon - in Harper’s magazine. “I always dyed my hair myself and I didn’t think I could colour the hair at the back, but in the end I liked leaving it that way, like the dark side of the moon”. A star of music mag covers and cover girl for a slew of other publications, she was even immortalised by Andy Warhol. Her glamour and personality overshadowed the rest of the band, and in 1982 it split up in an explosion of acrimony and envy. Debbie launched an unsuccessful solo career, then tried her hand at the cinema, with an unforgettable role in David Cronenberg’s “Videodrome”.

Fue protagonista de muchas covers y fue además inmortalizada por Andy Warhol, pero el encanto de Harry ofusca al resto de la banda, hasta que en el 1982 se separan por envidias y celos. Debbie prueba su carrera como solista pero sin éxito y luego en el cine: su papel en “Videodrome” de Cronenberg es inolvidable.
Despite the passage of time, Harry’s energy and charisma enabled her to outshine the new, modern icons when Blondie reunited in 1999 and renewed their success with “Maria”, which climbed to top of the international charts. Now, forty years on from the birth of the band, a new disc has been released to celebrate the anniversary, called “Blondie 4 (0) ever”, a greatest hits compilation that also includes some previously unreleased material. Debbie is sixty-nine now, but she still has all her old personality and talent. And that includes her rebellious streak - after confirming the old rumours about her bisexuality, she refused to sing at the Sochi Olympics in protest at Putin’s homophobic opinions. Even now it’s still not clear how many of the affairs she is supposed to have had are real, but as she candidly admits, “Monogamy? Yes, I’ve done that once or twice”. Happy birthday to a transgressive icon.

Tampoco ha cambiado su índole rebelde: luego de haber confirmado su bisexualidad, se negó a cantar en la Juegos Olímpicos de Sochi a raíz de las frases homofóbicas de Putin. A día de hoy no se sabe si son reales todos los flirts que le atribuyen, ella replica con candidez: “¿Si soy monógama? Alguna vez lo fui”. Feliz cumpleaños, alma transgresiva.

“I was inspired by Paris, the performances of the Moulin Rouge, the old circuses, wild abandonment and that feeling of letting go that explodes out of you like you’re drunk with love,” says underwater photographer Christy Lee Rogers on the themes of her new solo show, ÉLAN. “Me inspiré en París, las actuaciones del Moulin Rouge, los viejos circos, un total abandono y esa sensación de dejarse llevar que estalla desde dentro como si estuvieras borracho de amor,” nos cuenta la fotógrafa submarina Christy Lee Rogers sobre los temas de su nuevo espectáculo en solitario, ÉLAN. Seen from a distance there is something Baroque about the vibrant interplay of light, shapes and colours in a Christy Lee Rogers photos. A Rubenesque display of figures voluptuously intertwining, light piercing bodies that seem to dissolve, elements of chiaroscuro accentuating the dynamism of the movements - all made more dramatic by contrasting colours and the fluidity of water.
Visto desde lejos, hay algo Barroco en el juego vibrante de luz, formas y colores en una toma de Christy Lee Rogers. “I imagined living in Paris during the1920s as a performer, with no possessions except for my talent and art, and how free, yet desperate, that would be,” she says. Élan is French for vigour, her show is a burst of vivacity and spirit that only a truly talented artist could make possible, combined with the photographer’s unerring ability to recognise and seize the moment. To create this underwater vintage circus Christy recruited ten of the world’s best performance artists in the US - dance masters, synchronized swimmers, aerialists, pole dancers and actors. “You know a true talent by the enthusiasm they bring to their performance and to everything around them. That energy just exudes from them and it’s so inspiring,” she says. These are bohemian imaginings, abstract yet wild, scenes of floating contemporary harlequins dressed in candy stripes and shining masks twirling around in translucent water, evoking a sense of abandonment and liberation. A surreal mix of can-can dancers and circus acrobats as if in an otherworldly, underwater dream.
“Me imaginé que vivía como artista en París durante los años 20, sin posesión alguna aparte de mi talento y arte, cuán libre, y al mismo tiempo, cuánta desesperación sentiría,” nos dice. Élan significa vigor en francés, su espectáculo es una explosión de vivacidad y espíritu que sólo gente con verdadero talento puede hacer posible, todo ello junto a la sorprendente habilidad de la fotógrafa para reconocer y aprovechar el momento. Para crear este circo vintage subacuático, Christy reclutó a diez de los mejores artistas del espectáculo del mundo en los EE.UU. - maestros de danza, nadadores de sincronización, acróbatas, bailarinas de streaptease y actores. “Reconoces el verdadero talento por el entusiasmo que aportan a su actuación y a todo lo que les rodea. Esa energía emana simplemente de ellos y es tan inspiradora” ella dice. Son fantasías bohemias, abstractas y a la vez salvajes, escenas de arlequines contemporáneos flotantes vestidos de caramelos y máscaras brillantes girando alrededor en agua translúcida, evocando una sensación de abandono y liberación. Una mezcla surrealista de bailarinas de can-can y acróbatas de circo como en un sueño del otro mundo bajo el agua.

Christy Lee Rogers is a visual artist from Kailua, Hawaii. Water is the medium she artfully manipulates, helping her break free of the canons of conventional photography. “Shooting through water is a like playing with all new rules. Maybe that’s why I love it so much,” she says. Her love for vivacious colours, the dynamism of water, complex settings and entangled bodies has made her famous throughout the world. Her works have been exhibited throughout the US and Europe and are held in private and public collections.

How did your passion for photography develop? I spent several years as a golf pro, but after a severe back injury I had to give up playing. I spent a few difficult years, trying to recover from surgery and wondering what I would do next in my life. I decided to start travelling, because it’s one of my greatest passions. I thought that maybe it would be a good idea to do it with a camera in my hands. Now I realise that it was the best decision I’ve ever made... Why travel photography? Travelling and photography are the two biggest passions in my life. There are so many incredible moments, and when I manage to capture even just a few of them I feel like the luckiest person on earth. The connection that sometimes develops between me and my subject is also wonderful - most of them love to see the picture I took and chat for a little while with me. How do you organise your travels? I spend several months researching my next destination...special places, hidden little villages...always working to find the real essence of the country I’m going to visit. Then I talk to my travel agent - over the years she’s also become a great friend - and she arranges everything for me. How do you choose your subjects? I just walk and walk (preferably in the early morning) with my mind and my heart open to everything that comes along...and of course with my camera in hand. I love landscapes, but most times I focus on the people who cross my path, always trying to capture spontaneous moments.

¿Cómo ha evolucionado tu pasión por la fotografía? Trabajé varios años como profesional del golf, pero debido a una grave lesión en la espalda tuve que renunciar a ello. Fueron años difíciles, tratando de recuperarme después de la operación y preguntándome qué iba a hacer con mi vida. Me decidí a empezar a viajar, porque es una de mis grandes pasiones. Pensé que tal vez sería una buena idea hacerlo con una cámara en mis manos. Ahora me doy cuenta de que fue la mejor decisión que jamás he tomado... ¿Por qué la fotografía de viajes? Viajar y la fotografía son las dos grandes pasiones de mi vida. Hay tantos momentos increíbles, y cuando me las arreglo para capturar aunque sólo sea unos pocos, me siento la persona más afortunada de la tierra. La conexión que se produce a veces con la persona que estoy fotografiando es increíble también; a la mayoría les encanta ver la imagen que he tomado y hablan conmigo un rato. ¿Cómo organizas tus viajes? Me paso varios meses investigando mi próximo destino…lugares especiales, pequeños pueblos escondidos…siempre luchando por encontrar la verdadera esencia del país que voy a visitar. Luego hablo con mi agente de viajes - que en los últimos años se ha convertido en una gran amiga - y ella se encarga de todo. ¿Cómo eliges tus temas? Me dedico a caminar y caminar (preferiblemente por la mañana temprano) con mi mente y mi corazón abiertos a todo lo que venga…y por supuesto con la cámara en mano. Me encantan los paisajes, pero la mayoría de las veces me centro en las personas que se cruzan en mi camino, siempre tratando de capturar momentos espontáneos.

Your shots are pure poetry, what’s the secret behind your lens? Thank you for the lovely comment! I guess that it’s just a matter of loving what I do and letting my soul guide me. There are many ways of understanding and interpreting this wonderful art, and I always try to capture beauty in every little corner. It’s sad to see that our world is wounded, but it is also a place full of magic… What inspires you? Anything that moves my heart in a positive way...a beach at dawn, a mother with a child, a fisherman at work...and most of it with a big, sincere smile. I once read that “a smile is the shortest way between two people”...and I couldn’t agree more.

Tus fotos son pura poesía, ¿cuál es el secreto detrás de tu objetivo? ¡Gracias por el cumplido! Supongo que es sólo cuestión de que me encanta lo que hago y dejo que mi alma me guíe. Hay muchas maneras de entender e interpretar este maravilloso arte, y yo siempre intento captar la belleza en cada rincón. Es triste a veces ver como está nuestro mundo, pero también es un lugar lleno de magia… ¿Qué te inspira? Cualquier cosa que conmueva mi corazón de manera positiva…la playa al amanecer, una madre con un niño, un pescador en el trabajo…y casi siempre con una sonrisa grande y sincera. Una vez leí que “una sonrisa es el camino más corto entre dos personas”…y yo no podría estar más de acuerdo.

Each journey must be an enriching experience. What do you bring back with you? You’re absolutely right about that. In addition to all the photographs I bring back home, there are all the unforgettable moments that I have the incredible luck to experience during my journeys. Each and every one of them makes me a better person, more open-minded, more compassionate, more generous and respectful. And also teaches me some very valuable lessons, like the fact that nobody is better that the rest, that we all deserve to have a decent life. Have you had any books published? Yes, published my first book recently, a few months ago. I was very lucky, because after sending my work to a few publishers, my favourite one, Lunwerg, came back to me. The quality of their books is absolutely fantastic. The book’s called “Birmania” (“Myanmar”) and is my little homage to the kind and wonderful people of that country. Despite all the difficulties they are facing, they welcome you with the most sincere smile. Your future projects? I’ll be going to Tibet in early 2015 to finish a project I began on my last trip to Nepal and Bhutan. Lunwerg’s editorial director and I have been already developing the concept of our next book, to be called “Himalayan Kingdoms”. I have so many projects in mind and patience is definitely not one of my virtues...so the next few months are going to be a real test for me! But I’m sure that it will be worth the wait.
Cada viaje tiene que ser una experiencia enriquecedora. ¿Con qué te quedas después? Tienes toda la razón. Junto con todas las fotografías que hago, están todos los momentos inolvidables que tengo la suerte increíble de experimentar durante mis viajes. Todos y cada uno de ellos hacen de mí una persona mejor, más abierta, con más compasión, más generosa y respetuosa. Y también me enseña algunas lecciones muy valiosas, como el hecho de que nadie es mejor que los demás, que todos merecemos tener una vida digna. ¿Te han publicado algún libro? Sí, recientemente he publicado mi primer libro, hace un par de meses. Tuve mucha suerte, porque después de enviar mi trabajo a unos cuantos editores, mi favorito, Lunwerg, me llamó. La calidad de sus libros es absolutamente fantástica. El libro se llama “Birmania” (“Myanmar”) y es mi pequeño homenaje a la amable y maravillosa gente de ese país. A pesar de todas las dificultades con las que se enfrentan, te acogen con la sonrisa más sincera. ¿Tus futuros proyectos? If you’re born in one of Brazil’s favelas, and believe in God, the greatest thing you can hope for is to have a talent for football and maybe be good enough to turn professional. If you have money, though, and believe in God, at the age of four you can start indulging your passion for go-karting, and begin to dream of Formula 1. Ayrton Senna came from a well-off family and had a deep belief in God that many regarded as exaggerated. And while Ayrton’s parents gave him material support, God occasionally made a contribution by sending some rain. Ayrton Senna was the wizard of rain. A peerless driver, never to be forgotten, still acclaimed and celebrated more than any other past or present F1 star, twenty years precisely after his death and those three days of national mourning proclaimed in a country where alegria had suddenly turned to tristeza.
Si habéis nacido en una favela en Brasil y creéis en Dios, como máximo podéis esperar que vuestros pies sean buenos y quizás poder debutar en un estadio de fútbol. Si en cambio, poseéis mucho dinero y creéis en Dios, podéis permitiros a tan sólo 4 años de comenzar a cultivar la pasión por el kart y soñar con la F1. Ayrton Senna pertenecía a una familia pudiente y nutría una fe en Dios que para muchos era demasiado exagerada. Sus padres lo apoyaban desde un punto de vista económico y Dios, por su lado, lo recompensaba con una sola cosa: la lluvia. Ayrton Senna era el mago de la lluvia. Un piloto único, jamás olvidado, aclamado y celebrado aún hoy como nadie después 20 años de su muerte y de aquellos tres días de luto nacional en un país que de golpe precipitó de la alegría a la tristeza.

He only began notching up wins at the age of thirteen, but this was simply because the rules prevented him from doing it earlier. He soon took the Junior, South American and then the Brazilian Championships. But he wasn’t an F1 wunderkind - it was impossible then, as this was a time when top-level drivers always drove with their pension book in their back pocket. He was still at the wheel of a go-kart at the age of nineteen, but in Europe. He described the sport, with a tinge of regret, as fun in its purest state, unaffected by politics and favouritism. So the Formula Ford 1600, the 2000 and the British F3 Championship on board single-seaters were a means for the driver to cut his teeth. Ayrton Senna wasn’t yet famous, and despite his obvious ability and financial potential, his first F1 car was an old banger. But after two races and speeding through the streets of Monaco in a punishing downpour, he won a second place in a Toleman - it would have been a win if not for the race manager’s decision to suspend the event prematurely. His first success came the following year at the Estoril, in Portugal, at the wheel of a Lotus. God turned on the tap and covered the circuit in water, so Senna dominated the field, overtaking all the drivers but one. He was intelligent, talented, a perfectionist and damnably fast.

Comienza a ganar a los 13 años sólo porque los reglamentos le impiden hacerlo antes: Campeonato Junior, Sudamericano y Brasileño en serie. Y como eran otras épocas, no obstante su edad no fue un piloto precoz. En aquellos tiempos en la máxima serie, se corría con la libreta de jubilado debajo del asiento. A los 19 años corría todavía en kart pero ya estaba en Europa y sin ningún remordimiento definía siempre el karting como diversión pura, sin ataduras políticas ni favoritismos. En cambio la Fórmula Ford 1600, la 2000, el Campeonato Británico de F3, a bordo de coches monoplazas, se transforman en arañazos donde el piloto debe comenzar a afilarse las uñas. Ayrton Senna no es famoso y a pesar de sus habilidades y posibilidades económicas, llega a la F1 gracias al “cacharro” con cuatro ruedas, el coche de la escudería Toleman. Luego de haber participado solamente en dos carreras llega a las calles de Mónaco, donde con ese modesto coche y bajo una lluvia torrencial alcanza el segundo puesto (hubiera obtenido la victoria si el director de carrera no la hubiese suspendido antes de tiempo). Su primer triunfo llega un año después en Estoril, Portugal, manejando un Lotus. Dios riega el circuito y Senna domina hasta duplicar todos los pilotos menos uno. Es inteligente, talentoso, perfeccionista y terriblemente rápido.

He had a unique style, a dance that took the form of shimmying into and out of the curves. The colourful Brazilian TV commentators provided a unique spectacle on every televised broadcast. Senna’s move to McLaren to join Alain Prost was a logical step for a rising star like him, but it also marked the beginning of the most amazing rivalry in the F1 world. When in 1988, at Suzuka, at the age of 28, he won the first of his three World Championships at the expense of his team mate, he gained the status of legend. After making a bad start from pole position he slipped rapidly down to 14th place, and started to pray. When God - still watching over Senna - called the sunshine off and sent in the rain, Senna made an incredible comeback. In a Brazil devastated by poverty and suffering from a twenty-year drought in sporting awards - including football Ayrton became an idol and a symbol of hope and social redemption, and later, even became the hero of a strip cartoon. He gave away some of the money earned from his victories, and enjoyed the immense popularity and adulation that came his way, although he had struggled constantly against the deep, innate shyness that afflicted him outside the cockpit.

Las coloridas crónicas de los canales de televisión brasileros regalan un espectáculo único en cada carrera de Senna. Su llegada a la McLaren junto con Alain Prost parece ser el lógico comienzo de una estrella naciente pero es también el inicio de la rivalidad deportiva más increíble que jamás se haya visto en la historia de las carreras automovilísticas. Pues parte (mal) en Pole, resbala hasta la 14ª posición y comienza a rezar. Y cuando Dios, siempre él, llama a los boxes al sol para dar lugar a la lluvia, Senna remonta de una manera nunca vista. Brasil en ese momento estaba destruido por la pobreza y desde hacía veinte años se hallaba en total abstinencia de títulos, hasta en el fútbol, lo que hizo que Ayrton se transformara de inmediato en un ídolo y en un símbolo de esperanza y de redención social. Por un lado dona en secreto parte de sus ganancias acumuladas con sus triunfos y por el otro, fuera del habitáculo, disfruta de su inmensa popularidad combatiendo con su gran timidez innata.

He liked the sea, fast boats, water-skiing and flying in all its forms - and of course, he loved beautiful women. In fact, by now he had become a sex symbol. He appeared in the company of Carol Alt, Cindy Crawford, Xuxa Meneghel, Elle Macpherson, Adriane Galisteu and god knows how many more stunning beauties. On the track he kept on winning and racking up achievements - in 1991, still lacking that vital victory in the home GP, he won at Interlagos even after mechanical trouble left him driving only in sixth gear. He then passed out after crossing the finishing line. But what with the controversies, extra-curricular interests, injustices, rivalries, the Suzuka incident, the disqualifications, the increasing dominance of technology and the serious accidents, all the enjoyment had been sucked out of F1, especially for a Brazilian like Senna, who always wore his heart on his sleeve. In fact, after the death of Roland Ratzinger and Barrichello’s serious accident, many believed he would not take his usual pole position at Imola on Sunday, 1st May. But there he was, with the Austrian flag hidden in his cockpit, ready to be waved on his victory lap in honour of his deceased colleague. It was a day of heat and bright sunshine. Not a single drop of rain fell on the Riviera Romagnola that day.

En la pista sigue ganando y realizando hazañas, como por ejemplo la de 1991, cuando todavía no había ganado en un GP local y en Interlagos triunfa corriendo por un desperfecto con solamente la sexta marcha y desmayándose en la llegada por el agotamiento. Pero la F1 con sus polémicas, sus intereses extra deportivos, sus injusticias, sus rivalidades, las “tocadas” de Suzuka, las descalificaciones, la electrónica que apremia y los graves accidentes hacen que para un brasileño abierto como él, no sea más una alegría. Hasta que en Imola, el domingo 1° de mayo de 1994, luego de la muerte de Roland Ratzeberger y del grave accidente de Barrichello, son varios los que creen que no va a tomar posición en pole. En cambio lo hace, con la bandera austriaca escondida en secreto en su habitáculo, para, en caso de victoria, agitarla para saludar a su compañero fallecido. Mucho sol y mucho calor. Dios ese día no había previsto ni siquiera una gota de lluvia en la Riviera Romagnola.

For many they were only one-way trips. You’ll pay much more than the price of the ticket to the start line or your race budget for this competition - everything is put on the line in these races, including your existence. They play on your instinctive urge to overcome a challenge that for many - perhaps even you - will turn out to be insuperable, leaving you defeated by fear, lack of skill or plain bad luck. In the end they’re “only” sports events, but those who complete the course acquire a special aura, and the winners gain a semi-divine status. The sea has no tougher challenge to offer than a solo round-the-world voyage without stops or assistance - the Vendée Globe, a race invented by Frenchman Philippe Jeantot in 1989. In the seven races contested so far, three sailors have paid with their life - the American Mike Plant, immediately after the start, Englishman Nigel Burgess and Canadian Gerry Rufs. They were all highly-experienced seamen - in fact, you can only take part if you have already completed a solo trans-oceanic race, or if you have already sailed in a Vendée. A bit of a Catch-22, really. Only seventy out of the one hundred and thirty-nine entrants so far have managed to reach the finish line under their own steam, so to speak - in other words, competitors have a fifty per cent chance of finishing the race. Take great care, because most of the route - in practice, the entire circumnavigation of the Antarctic - unfolds in the world’s most challenging seas, away from commercial routes and too far from land for a helicopter rescue to be mounted. Either you are picked up by another competitor - that’s the code of sea - or you wait for a navy ship to be sent out for you.
Para muchos ha sido sólo un viaje de ida. Fue pagado mucho más que el pasaje para llegar al lugar de partida o del budget necesario para el desafío. Son las competencias all in: todo incluido, vuestra vida también. Se sopalancan los instintos: aquella necesidad ancestral de superar los obstáculos que para muchos y quizás también para vosotros, resulta ser insuperable por miedo, inexperiencia pero también por mala suerte. Sin embargo son “solamente” competiciones deportivas y aquel que las completa, adquiere un aura especial y quien la gana, se transforma en un semidiós. Siguiendo la evolución de los desplazamientos del hombre sobre medios de transporte, se comienza por el mar y aquí no existe algo más arduo que dar la vuelta al mundo en solitario sin escalas y sin asistencia: el Vedée Globe es una regata inventada por el francés Philippe Jeantot en el 1989. Hasta hoy se han disputado siete ediciones y han perdido la vida, “solamente” tres personas (el estadounidense Mike Plant, poco después de la partida; el inglés Nigel Burgess y el canadiense Gerry Rufs). Gente con muchísima experiencia: puede participar solamente aquel que haya ya realizado una regata transoceánica en solitario o aquel que haya concluido una Vendée. Pero son 139 los participantes y aquellos que llegan a la meta por sus propios medios son solamente 70, es decir que existe un 50% de probabilidades de no culminar la competición. Ojo!: la mayor parte de la navegación se realiza circunnavegando Antártida en las aguas mas difíciles del globo, lejos de las rutas comerciales y demasiado distanciados de la tierra para poder ser recuperados en helicóptero, lo que significa que podéis ser salvados por un adversario (en el mar se hace) o esperar una nave enviada por la marina militar.

Rough seas can also be encountered around the Isle of Man, a place that exerts a powerful pull on intrepid sporting heroes - not because of the sailing, tales of goblins, sprites and fairies or even its tailless cats. No, what brings hundreds of riders from around the world here between the end of May and the beginning of June is the Tourist Trophy (TT). “I rode around the Isle of man and I understand why people love this race. It’s really impressive, an incredible, fantastic course. But unfortunately it’s too dangerous. Sometimes the riders are just crazy. The Isle of Man is very unforgiving. If you make a mistake, it may be your last”, said Valentino Rossi after his lap of honour in 2009. He rode alongside Giacomo Agostini, who won ten out of the sixteen TT races he entered, and missed out on a place on the podium only in the three races he was forced to pull out of. It’s the oldest road race, held without interruption since 1907, covering the thirty-seven miles of the Mountain Course. The bikes roar through villages, nudging 300 km per hour past walls, along winding farm roads, pavements and through crossroads - not to mention the bankings and trees along the route, or the ramps and bumps of the road surface. It is sad, but not surprising, that almost one hundred and forty riders have lost their lives in the TT race.
También en la Isla de Man las aguas son difíciles y por ello es un lugar fascinante para los jóvenes Hércules, no por los veleros ni por las historias de hadas, duendes o gatos sin colas. Es el Tourist Trophy (TT), que se realiza entre fines de mayo y principios de junio, lo que atrae a miles de centauros de todo el mundo. “Recorrí la Isla de Man y entiendo por qué la gente ama esta carrera, porque es realmente impresionante: el recorrido es increíble, fantástico. Pero desgraciadamente también es muy peligroso. A veces los pilotos son medio locos y la Isla de Man es muy difícil, si cometéis un error, puede que sea el último”. Esta fue la declaración de Valentino Rossi luego de haber realizado la vuelta de honor en el 2009, fuera de la competición y junto a Giacomo Agostini, quien disputó 16 TT venciendo en 10 y no estuvo en el podio solamente tres veces pues se vio obligado a retirarse. Es la carrera más antigua sobre carretera y se realiza sin interrupciones desde 1907 sobre 37 millas de la Mountain Course. El desafío es entre medio de casas, corriendo a 300 km/h entre muros, granjas, aceras y cruces. También hay precipicios o árboles a los lados de la carretera. O saltos y ondulaciones del asfalto. No sorprende, aunque entristece saber que aquellos que no tomaron la nave de regreso hacia su casa fueron casi 140 motociclistas.

Sweating in a sauna while gazing out over an expanse of ice may seem normal in some remote Scandinavian locations, but not on a yacht unless, that is, you have chosen to sail on board an expedition yacht. The most recent megayacht owner to be tempted by this type of craft was Roman Abramovich, who joined the club with the biggest example of the class in the private yacht fleet - the 115-metre Luna. The 113-metre Le Grand Bleu took the stage in 2000, and the 89-metre Arctic P was relaunched after a refit in 2008. The Arctic is still an ice-breaker, but now boasts high-end luxury yacht interiors. And the list could go on - Flavio Briatore, too, has been persuaded by the masculine lines of Big Roi, a 63-metre vessel with blue hull livery, surmounted by four dazzling, white decks. Briatore has renamed his ship the Force One, after the initials of his name.

En el 2000 había batido el récord con el 113 metros Le Grand Blue y en el 2008 fue botado luego del refitting el 89 metros Artic P, el cual permaneció como rompehielos pero su interior era el de un yate de altísima categoría. La lista se puede ampliar con Flavio Briatore quien quedó fascinado por las líneas masculinas del Big Roi, 63 metros de casco azul dominados por cuatro candorosos puentes, al que bautizó Force Blue, con las iniciales de su nombre.

These explorer yachts bear a close visual and often functional resemblance to ships built for exploration and work in challenging (frequently polar) sea and weather conditions, while their equipment, facilities and interior design can be compared to that on cruise megayachts of the same size. Their external lines say it all - high bows to cope with whatever the sea can throw at them, low sides towards the stern to facilitate loading and unloading gear. The compact superstructure is located forward or aft, to leave room for work areas or open-air relaxation zones. Here there are sizeable cranes - the largest can shift loads up to ten tons in weight - and dozens of toys, including submarines, speedboats, 25-foot sailboats and jetskis. Not forgetting the helicopter landing pad, covered swimming pools, barbeque areas, dining rooms, surround-sound plasma TVs, gym and a spa. Plus, of course, a crew that’s well into double figures. The overall concept, in fact, is tough outside, cosy inside. And it’s not all about brand-new builds - many owners seek work vessels launched several decades ago, built “like they used to be”, robust, slow and safe. The large number available on the charter market shows just how popular this type of ship is, as there are dozens of them available, from 25 to over 100 metres. All you have to do is choose whereabouts on the edge of the world you want to sail to. Because an explorer knows no limits - turn its bows to the open sea, and it will take you anywhere.
La característica de los explorers es la cercanía estética y muchas veces funcional con los barcos de exploración y de trabajo en mares difíciles (sobretodo aguas polares) unida a los detalles y al diseño de los interiores que no se alejan de los megayates para cruceros de iguales dimensiones. Sus líneas externas son bien marcadas: la proa es alta para enfrentar cualquier tipo de mar, las amuradas descienden hacia la popa para facilitar la carga y descarga del equipamiento. La estructura superior es compacta y desplazada hacia proa o hacia popa dejando más espacio a las zonas de trabajo (o de placer aquellas que se encuentran al descubierto), donde se ubican enormes grúas (las más grandes desplazan cargas de hasta 10 toneladas) y decenas de toys: submarinos, lanchas veloces, veleros de 25’, waterbike, etc. Además de los helipuertos, piscinas en cubierta, zonas para la barbacoa, comedores, televisores de plasma, surround, gimnasio y spa y numerosas personas de la tripulación. En resumen: duros por fuera y tiernos por dentro. No es sólo una carrera hacia lo moderno. Es más, varios buscan una nave de trabajo de unas décadas atrás, construidas «como se hacía antes», resistentes, lentas y seguras. Un testimonio clave de esta nueva tendencia en crecimiento es el mercado de los chárteres. Hoy podéis encontrar decenas que parten de los 25 hasta los 100 metros y elegir en cual zona del mundo en las fronteras del mismo deseáis navegar. Porque un explorer no conoce límites, podéis dejarlo navegar y os llevará adondequiera!

Three snapshots from a man’s life. In one he is young, sitting in front of a computer. In the second he’s a millionaire in jacket and tie, on board his private jet. In the third he is older, naked, tattooed, one arm wrapped around a shotgun and the other around a girl against a background of tropical vegetation. Moments in a life that seem without logic, but when the subject is John McAfee reality becomes as cryptic as Chadder, an encrypted private messaging app he has just released to help fight his latest battle, this time against interception. The antivirus pioneer, a genius to some, madman to others, a legend to his fans, has always fled from what life has brought him - definitions, companies, a comfortable yet boring life as a millionaire, a wife and countless affairs. Not forgetting the police in Belize, who imprisoned him for producing methamphetamines, then accused him of murder. His has been a movie-script life, and now he’s in Canada to produce an autobiographical film. I finally managed to corner him after a long pursuit.

Tres instantáneas de la vida de un hombre. En una le vemos de joven sentado frente al ordenador. En otra es un millonario con chaqueta y corbata a bordo de su jet privado. Y en la tercera con una frondosa vegetación tropical de fondo aparece mas viejo, desnudo, con tatuajes, con una escopeta en una mano y con el brazo rodeando a una chica. Son momentos de una vida que parece no tener ninguna lógica, pero es que cuando el sujeto en cuestión es John McAfee la realidad acaba siendo tan críptica como Chadder, una app de mensajes privados y encriptados que McAfee acaba de sacar para ayudarle en su última batalla, que esta vez es contra la interceptación. El pionero de los antivirus, genio para unos, loco para otros y legenda para sus fans, ha huido siempre de lo que la vida le ha deparado: definiciones, compañías, una cómoda pero aburrida vida como millonario, una esposa e innumerables amantes… por no mencionar la policía de Belice, que lo puso a la sombra por fabricar metanfetaminas y luego le acusó de asesinato. Su vida parece sacada de un guión y ahora está en Canadá produciendo una película autobiográfica. Después de mucho intentarlo, por fin conseguí acorralarle.

Hello John…you’re a rather controversial figure. There are those who love you, while others criticize you for a life that’s ‘too wild’. Which do you think is the right Way to live? What do you believe in? The word “belief” is, in itself a slippery word. What is belief? If you have seen sunlight, then you do not have to believe in it. Only the blind must believe in sunlight. If you have heard a meadow lark sing, then belief plays no part in the appreciation of its song. Only the deaf must believe in the song. If a person is open, fully, to the mystery of life, then God is revealed without the necessity of belief.

Están los que te adoran y los que te critican por llevar una vida “demasiado alocada”. ¿Cuál consideras que es el enfoque adecuado para la vida? ¿En qué crees? La propia palabra “creencia” es bastante peliaguda. ¿Qué es una creencia? Si has visto la luz del sol, entonces no necesitas creer en ella. Solamente los ciegos tienen que creer en la luz del sol. Si alguna vez has oído cantar a una alondra, creer o no creer es algo independiente a apreciar su canto. Solamente los sordos deben creer en el canto. Si una persona se abre completamente al misterio de la vida, entonces Dios queda revelado sin necesidad alguna de creer.

You’re right. I love your image because it’s complex. You’re not just a coder or a entrepreneur, you search for other things. You are always in search of something. I like this state of mind, which may be lacking in this new generation. What do you think about this? What has changed? I believe that that people are still searching for things. Perhaps the search has turned from world explorers like Sir Richard Burton or Charles Darwin, to explorers of a more inward kind. The Internet has opened up vast amounts of knowledge that can be obtained without leaving your living room. Many people, I suspect, are engaged in an inward journey just as exciting as my exploration of the jungles of Belize.
Tienes razón. Me gusta tu imagen porque es compleja. No eres solamente un programador o un empresario, sino que buscas algo más. Siempre estás buscando algo. Me gusta ese estado mental y que quizás falte en esta nueva generación. ¿Qué piensas de esto? ¿Qué ha cambiado? Creo que la gente sigue buscando cosas. Quizás la búsqueda haya derivado desde exploradores como Sir Richard Burton o Charles Darwin a exploradores de una vertiente más interior. Internet pone a nuestra disposición ingentes cantidades de conocimientos sin salir de casa. Yo creo que mucha gente está envuelta en un viaje interior tan excitante como pudo ser mi exploración de las selvas de Belice.
You also searched for other things there. What were you searching? I wanted to find the sources of the war, conflict, excessive greed and indifference that seems so prevalent today. I wanted to experiment with human relationships, unfettered by the burden of wealth and the expectations associated with wealth.

You said that Belize is so raw and so clear and so in-your-face. So there’s an opportunity to see something about human nature that you can’t really see in a more polite society, because the purpose of society is to mask ourselves from each other. Have you learned more about yourself, have you discovered…your “dark side”? I believe that the “dark side” of human nature is universal. All people feel anger, hostility, greed, fear, envy and jealousy, and all people are moved and motivated by these feelings from time to time. These feelings create a culture of deception and fear, and devious designs are seen in nearly all of our interactions as humans. I do not wish to sound cynical, but without the thin veneer of civilization which so precariously balances us between peace and chaos, we would unravel and be indistinguishable from the hyenas and vultures of the savannah. What did you learn from this experience? I learned that one man alone can do very little to change the world. Change can only come when millions of dissatisfied people work and act together against oppression and injustice.

Creo que el “lado oscuro” de la naturaleza humana es universal. Todos sentimos ira, hostilidad, avaricia, miedo, envidia y celos y todos nos movemos por estos sentimientos en ocasiones. Estos sentimientos crean un cultivo para el engaño y el miedo y en casi todas nuestras interacciones como humanos hay diseños taimados y astutos. No quiero parecer cínico, pero sin la delgada pátina de la civilización que tan precariamente nos sostiene entre la paz y el caso, los humanos nos desataríamos y no se nos podría distinguir de las hienas y de los buitres de la sabana. ¿Qué aprendiste de esta experiencia? Que un hombre solo no puede hacer casi nada para cambiar el mundo. El cambio sólo puede realizarse cuando millones de personas insatisfechas colaboren contra la opresión y la injusticia.

Do you think spying is a real threat in our society? Spying, in my humble opinion, is the number one threat to personal freedom today. We all carry smart phones with applications that watch us, listen to us, read our emails, our text messages and transmit them to unknown places. If you read the permissions for the average app you will be shocked to discover how much of your privacy you have relinquished. I created a free app called Dcentral1 that scans your phone and alerts you to these issues. I highly recommend that everyone download this app and run it just once to see for yourself what lack of privacy really means in our lives.
Después de haberte enfrentado a los virus informáticos, a las drogas y a las bacterias, ahora vas a hacer lo mismo contra el espionaje con “Chadder”. Háblanos de esta aplicación. ¿Crees que el espionaje es una amenaza en nuestra sociedad? En mi humilde opinión, el espionaje es la amenaza más grave contra la libertad de las personas hoy día. Si te lees las autorizaciones app de una app cualquiera te sorprenderá ver a cuánta de tu privacidad has renunciado. Creé una app gratuita llamada Dcentral1 que analiza tu teléfono y te alerta de estos temas. Yo recomiendo a todos que se la bajen y que la ejecuten solamente una vez para ver qué implica exactamente la falta de privacidad en nuestras vidas.

Blue Nineties is Blue Marlin Ibiza’s new musical cycle with an emphasis on old-school sounds. Cristian Varela opens his suitcase of vinyl discs and transports us back in time to rediscover the music of the past three decades. With over 20 years’ experience as a DJ, Cristian Varela is the Spanish ambassador to the international electronic music scene, and he’ll be leading a unique musical adventure in Ibiza, an exclusive Blue Marlin Ibiza event every Wednesday, all summer. “For several years I’ve had a project in mind based on the roots of all the music I began playing at the end of the 80s and start of the 90s. The project is a fusion spanning the period of three generations during which I’ve been sharing my feelings and sentiments. It takes place over one night, with a sound as special as the experience we enjoyed over two decades ago”, says Cristian, who will be mesmerising us with the spellbinding magic of vinyl discs, his own mixes and remixes of great hits that made the careers of artists like Donna Summer, Gloria Gaynor and Barbara Streisand, or such bands as Kool & The Gang, Technotronic and even Kraftwerk or Depeche Mode.

MENDO Underground Sound Young, energetic, talented and a fervent lover of underground music, Mendo’s first contact with electronic music was from pirate radio stations. An up-and-coming artist on the Cadenza label, when not working in Ibiza he is most likely to be found in London or maybe Berlin, Japan, Sao Paulo or Buenos Aires. A Swiss citizen born to Spanish parents, he has released over 100 tracks in ten years. He also has several music awards under his belt, including the Vicious Music Prize and best newcomer award as producer of the legendary DJs Luciano, Joris Voorn and Erick Morillo. This summer Blue Marlin Ibiza will be the venue for several of his outdoor gigs. Mendo is quite clear on this: “I only hope that the girls will dance - everyone else will follow... I want people to have a good time with my music. Being a DJ is the best job in the world”. Sure to be an intense yet sophisticated session.

She sings from her very core and the thing that attracts her most about performing outdoors in Blue Marlin Ibiza is that she can look into the eyes of her audience. Rebeka has lived in Ibiza for 13 years. In spite of the fact that her performances keep her moving between Los Angeles, London, Barcelona and elsewhere around the globe, she tells us that “There is no place else I would rather live”, while adding that on the island “I have found myself, I have connected with nature and in recent years I have undergone a transformation that has allowed me to mature, and made me feel the true essence of the artist - a channel for energy”. At times, she feels that the force that drives her performances does not belong to her. “There have been times when I sang that I connected with the Earth and the universe. It is a sublime feeling that can only be compared to a state of Nirvana”. A heroine of live vocal performance and Spain’s foremost international exponent of electronic house music, she has had an intense artistic career, playing a starring role in memorable nights on the Ibiza scene and several European venues. However, she tells us that new projects are planned for this year. “Performances that are not based solely on electronic house music. I am preparing an album in other registers, other sound vibrations born of a sweeter Rebeka”. Rebeka Brown is a staunch defender of the cult of femininity. Born in Barcelona, she confesses her admiration for the courage of Tina Turner and describes herself as a fervent devotee of Frida Kahlo as well. “I am very ‘pro’ woman”. The courage to move forward and the energy of life are extremely important to me. This is a very solitary profession - in spite of being constantly surrounded by many people you are ultimately alone”. She has scheduled several Blue Marlin Ibiza gigs for the upcoming summer. “Do you know that this is the first venue on the island where I performed in public?”, she asks us with a smile, recalling Cala Jondal as an atmosphere full of dreams on an Ibiza that was much different from the island of today. Rebeka, where does your voice come from? It comes from deep within me. Do you mean that we are all capable of singing like you do? I believe that there are people who are born with special natural gifts, but at the same time we all have something special, your job is to discover what it is! Our mistake is our tendency to glorify artists. We overlook the fact that we all have the instruments needed to sing if we add practice and discipline. So now you know - listen to that musical note inside you and let all the emotions you feel flow freely, like Rebeka does!
Ella canta desde las entrañas, en Blue Marlin Ibiza quizás lo que me más le seduce de actuar al aire libre es que puede mirar al público a los ojos. Rebeka posee la habilidad de hacer sentir a la audiencia parte de la actuación. Hace 13 años que Rebeka vive en Ibiza. A pesar de que sus actuaciones la mantienen siempre entre Los Ángeles, Londres, Barcelona y distintos lugares de mundo, “no hay otro sitio donde quiera vivir”, nos explica al mismo tiempo que añade que en la isla “me he encontrado y enfrentado a mi misma, he conectado con la energía y la magia que la envuelve, los maravillosos rincones que hay en ella. En esta isla hay gente muy especial e inspiradora y estoy muy agradecida de todo lo que me aporta y de aprender cada día de todo ello”. A veces, Rebeka siente que esa fuerza que caracteriza a sus actuaciones no le pertenece. “Es tan potente la conexión y el clímax que se crea que para mí es comparable con el Nirvana, un colocón natural”. Heroína del live vocal y embajadora española de la electrónica house, su carrera como artista es intensa y la ha convertido en protagonista de las principales noches de la escena ibicenca y de distintos clubes europeos. Sin embargo, nos adelanta que este año está con proyectos nuevos: “Para mí es momento de mostrar otros registros. Me está llevando tiempo porque no es fácil encontrar el sonido, crear los temas, siempre me caractericé por querer innovar, aportar un toque de diferencia, soy inquieta por naturaleza”. Rebeka Brown es una gran defensora del culto a la feminidad. Nacida en Barcelona, pero criada en gran parte en la costa de Girona, la tierra de Dalí, nos confiesa que admira el valor que ha mostrado Tina Turner al igual que muestra ser una ferviente devota de Frida Khalo. “Soy muy ‘pro mujer’. El valor de salir adelante y la energía de vida son muy importantes para mí. Esta carrera es muy solitaria, aunque estés rodeado de mucha gente constantemente, en ocasiones te puedes sentir solo”. Durante todo el verano tiene previstas varias fechas en Blue Marlin Ibiza, “sabíais que esta cala fue el primer sitio de la isla donde actué por primera vez ante el público ibicenco?”, nos pregunta mientras sonríe y recuerda Cala Jondal como esa atmósfera plagada de ensueños en una Ibiza muy diferente a la actual. Rebeka, ¿de dónde nace tu voz? “Del vientre. De lo más profundo de mi ser. Tú quieres decirnos que todos podemos cantar como tú? “Yo creo que hay gente que viene con regalos naturales especiales, pero a la vez todos tenemos algo especial, el trabajo de uno es descubrir cual es! El error es que tenemos la tendencia a adular a los artistas. Olvidamos que todos tenemos el instrumento para cantar si le agregamos práctica y disciplina. Ya lo sabéis, prestad atención a esa nota musical que habita en vuestro interior y dejar fluir libremente, como Rebeka, cada una de las emociones que sentís dentro!

Catalogue Raisonné of the Works on Paper A cut is all it took. In the 1950s, this decisive gesture inspired by the desire surpass the old styles changed the art world for ever, signalling the birth of the spatialist movement. In his “White Manifesto”, the person responsible for this act, Lucio Fontana, spoke of the need for tridimensionality, to learn from sculpture and transcend a simple figurative depiction of the world, making the medium an instrument for exploring beyond it. The holes and slashes inflicted on the single-colour canvases liberated art from the oppression of classical surfaces, creating tangible, corporeal figures. But for the artist, these violent gestures were also a therapy, a way of setting himself free from his obsessions. The cutting-edge volume “Fontana: Catalogue Raisonné of the Works on Paper”, published by Skira, is one of the most complete publications on his graphic works, covering forty years of his creative activity, from figurative works to preliminary studies of spatial art tested on paper, culminating with his experimentation in techniques and unusual materials.

Isabella Blow: Fashion Galore! Impossible to pigeonhole, a provocative, independent, ironic fashion maven, Isabella Blow was an icon of British style. She began her career in New York as an assistant at Vogue, moved to London and worked with Tatler and then the Sunday Times, where she became fashion director and a pillar of British fashion. A skilled talent scout, she discovered stylists like Alexander McQueen, Hussein Chalayan and Philip Treacy. She was a powerhouse, but all that frenetic activity and bluster hid a fragile, insecure individual. Her fear of not measuring up and of constantly being judged dragged her into depression and led eventually to her suicide. This book, published by Somerset House in collaboration with the Isabella Blow Foundation and Central Saint Martins, examines her life through colour and black-and-white images taken by the insider Nick Knight, cataloguing her famous wardrobe, which included thousands of pieces by the most important modern designers.

FRANK ABAGNALE the CONMAN with a thousand faces // Las mil caras de la estafa
While Petty was the adventurer-thief of the seventeenth century, Frank Abagnale is the magician of the modern scam. Frank’s story began in 1964 when he left home after his parents’ divorce and was forced to make his own way in the world. He started by passing bouncing cheques and printing fake bank forms, including his own account number on them. This cunning trick brought in 40,000 dollars from the blissfully unaware depositors. As soon as his scams were rumbled, he would change identity. His greatest talent, in fact, was his ability to imitate anyone with persuasive credibility. Not yet twenty, he managed to pass himself off as a sociology lecturer, got a job with the Louisiana State Attorney General’s office, impersonated a Pan Am pilot in order to travel with the airline without paying, and worked as a paediatrician. Wanted in twenty-six countries, he was imprisoned and escaped three times, even escaping from the aircraft that was to take him to jail. In the USA he served only five of the twelve years he was sentenced to after agreeing to work with the FBI as a fraud consultant. He then set up “Abagnale & Associates” and operated in financial security. He is now a multi-millionaire, and lives happily in Tulsa.

La historia de Frank empieza en el 1964 cuando huye de su casa luego que sus padres se divorcian y debe encontrar los recursos para sobrevivir. Empieza con cheques sin fondos y falsificando formularios bancarios con el número de su cuenta corriente. Con esta “pequeña broma” obtiene 40.000 dólares a oscuras de los titulares de las cuentas bancarias. Cuando le descubren, cambia su identidad. Su gran habilidad es la de adoptar personalidades falsas de una manera extraordinaria. Aún no tenía 20 años, cuando se hizo pasar como profesor de sociología, obtiene un cargo de practicante en la oficina del consejero legal del Estado, se transforma en un falso piloto de la Pan Am para poder aprovecharse de los viajes de la línea aérea y hasta opera como pediatra. Fue reclamado por 26 países en los que había cometido delitos, lo arrestaron pero huyó tres veces y hasta logró escaparse del avión que lo debía llevar a la prisión. En Estados Unidos estuvo en la cárcel solamente 5 de los 12 años adjudicados pues aceptó trabajar como consultor de fraudes para el gobierno. Posteriormente crea la “Abagnate & Associates” que se ocupa de security financiera. Actualmente es un multimillonario tranquilo que vive en Tulsa.

the well-read thief // El ladrón de guante blanco He was a kind of Indiana Jones, but known to only a few. The name of William Petty, adventurer, trader and art thief, seemed to have fallen through the cracks of history - until, that is, Alexandra Lapierre decided to give him the fame he deserves, and began to scour the archives of half the world to gather material for a book. The time was the seventeenth century, archaeology was yet to evolve into a fully-fledged science, and the rich were eagerly collecting works of art. Driven by his passion and a desire for money, the astute Petty criss-crossed Europe in an amazing series of shipwrecks, arrests, raids and looting. A combination of scholar and criminal, he travelled from Thames-side castles to the Greek temples, the galleries of Venice, St Peter’s and Santa Sofia, via the Turkish prisons. Manuscripts, statues, bas-reliefs, tablets and ancient inscriptions pilfered from across the world turned up in the homes of the wealthy, often with a copy created by skilful artisans left behind in their place. Adventurer, thief, conman...and an archaeologist before the term existed.

El personaje de William Petty, aventurero, mercante y ladrón de obras de arte, se perdió en los pliegues de la historia hasta que un día Alexandra Lapierre decidió sacarla a relucir rastreando los archivos de casi todo el mundo para poder escribir un libro. En aquel entonces, en el siglo XVII, en el alba de la arqueología y del coleccionismo de obras de arte, el astuto Petty, estimulado por su avidez de riqueza y por su pasión por el arte, recorría el continente europeo entre naufragios, cárceles, correrías, saqueos. Era a su vez un erudito y un criminal y pudo moverse tranquilamente desde los castillos del Támesis hasta los templos griegos, desde las galerías de Venecia hasta San Pietro y Santa Sofía, pasando también por las cárceles turcas. Manuscritos, estatuas, bajorrelieves, tablas, inscripciones antiguas gracias a él terminaron su viaje en las mansiones de los ricos luego de haber sido substraídas de su lugar de origen y reemplazadas en muchos casos por copias realizadas por excelentes artesanos. The Language of Flowers
Flowers and diamonds. The ephemeral and the eternal, united by a shared ability to inspire emotions, often prove to be the safest investment when searching for a gift for a female recipient. The world of high watchmaking has come to the aid of anyone faced with making such a delicate choice, allowing the floral phenomenon to come to full bloom for the season to come. The wrist becomes a nursery where the colours illuminate petals from flowers of all species, fixing them within the confines of a watch dial, but most of all, rendering them immune from the passage of time. The house of Hermès has combined flowers and diamonds, trapping them inside the 34mm case of its Arceau Millefiori Raspberry version. The watch has a dominant pink theme, and blends its alligator strap and white gold case with the refinement of a unique dial by master glassmakers at the Cristalleries Royales de Saint-Louis. Clematis, cherry blossom, hydrangeas, poppies, magnolia and lotus flowers blossom on the wrist. As does the lily, the image chosen by Vacheron Constantin to adorn their Florilège-Giglio Bianco model from the Métiers D’Art collection. With a beige Mississippi alligator strap and, of course, a white gold case framed by diamonds. Finally, the classic “He loves me, he loves me not” has always been associated with that most simple, unassuming of flowers, the daisy. Christophe Claret has chosen it for Margot, the first feminine timepiece with in-house complications. Every time the pusher at two o’clock is pressed, a petal disappears, and the response of the person in mind is shown in a window at four o’clock. The age of romance isn’t dead.

En este maravilloso vivero florecen clemátides, flores de cerezo, hortensias, amapolas, magnolias y flores de loto. La imagen elegida por Vacheron Costantin es el lirio para adornar su modelo Florilège-Lirio Blanco de la colección Mètiers D’Art. Su brazalete es de color beige de caimán del Mississippi y, naturalmente, su caja es de oro blanco enmarcada en diamantes. Por último del clásico “me quiere, no me quiere” la propiedad privada pertenece a la flor más simple, la margarita. Christophe Claret la eligió para Margot, el primer medidor del tiempo femenino de la maison con complicaciones. Cada vez que se presiona el pulsador a las 2, un pétalo abandona la escena mostrando en una esfera a las 4, la respuesta de la persona amada. El tiempo del romanticismo se señala también así.

In the late 1950s convertible cars were at the height of their popularity. They were the perfect embodiment of a period of increasing prosperity and well-being that allowed those who could happily manage without a roof on their sports car to display their status to the world at large. The result was a series of cars so desirable that even Enzo Ferrari had no reservations about putting two models into production within very short lead times. Then in 1958 came the birth of a legend, the California, a sports car developed from the lovely 250 GT Berlinetta and designed mainly for America’s West Coast. Sportier and more attractive than its sister, based on the 250 Coupé Stradale, it soon became a darling of the Jet Set, and now, almost sixty years later, it can change hands at more than ten million dollars. In celebration, in 2008 Ferrari launched a new California, and at the last Geneva Motor Show a further homage to the Ferrari story was added to its name. The 2014, taking its cue from the world of Formula One, has mounted a turbo on the Maranello engines, a feature not seen since the era of the 1984 GTO and the F40 from 1987. Fascinating, intensely involving and bestially powerful, the Ferrari California T has a new V8 engine that now produces 560 hp, and 755Nm of torque in seventh gear. Put all this together and the result is maximum speed of 316 km/h, and acceleration of 0-100 km in three and sixth tenths of a second. Converting this Grand Tourer 2+2 from coupé to sports car takes a little longer - fourteen seconds. And like the most iconic models bearing the prancing horse marque, it doesn’t need a red livery to make itself noticed.

Representaba perfectamente una época de bienestar económico en crecimiento y concedía la posibilidad, a quien podía permitirse renunciar al techo sobre su coche deportivo, de mostrar al mundo su status symbol. Los automóviles descubiertos eran un objeto tan codiciado, que hasta Enzo Ferrari, en un periodo donde la fabricación fue muy limitada, no tuvo escrúpulos en producir hasta dos modelos de aquellos autos. Así es como nace el mito California, un spider pensado para la West Coast y proyectado sobre la base del encantador 250 GT Berlinetta. Mucho más deportivo y atractivo que su modelo coetáneo nacido del 250 Coupé Stradale, no tardó mucho en enamorar el Gotha del Jet Set. Hoy, después de 60 años, cambia de propietario por cifras superiores a los 10 millones de dólares. Para celebrar sus gestas, la Ferrari en el 2008 había realizado una nueva California y en el último salón de Ginebra, homenajeó nuevamente la historia del caballito. El 2014, siguiendo la estela de la F1, volvió a traer el turbo en los motores de Maranello, una elección que no se veía desde el 1984 en la época del GTO y en el 1987 del F40. The Otam Millennium 80 Open is a 24-metre motoryacht that planes at 50 knots, displaying the influence of automobile design in its furnishings and colours. Few yards offer real open motoryachts. Most of them restrict themselves to hard top models, which means in practice the same kind of difference as between a convertible car and a targa. Otam shows no fear of overstepping the limits with its Millennium 80, presenting a 24-metre with no superstructure except a rollbar. It’s a sporty mega-open with an extended wrap-around windscreen that ends in two carbon air intakes, a feature inspired by automobile aesthetics. This influence extends to the boat’s livery, available in a series of GT colours like Racing Blue, Maranello Red, Titanium, Black and Gold Grey. It’s also possible to specify a personalised colour. The layout centres on the cockpit - facing twin C-shaped sofas, which can be sheltered by a bimini top - and yes, a hard top is offered as an option. Then comes the bar area, with icemaker, fridge and grill. Aft of the table and seat, a sunpad extends over the tender garage, with another sunbathing area forward. If the owner chooses not to customise any part of the layout, the yard offers two versions of the below deck interiors, with four or three cabins - owner’s suite astern, VIP cabin forward and one or two twin guest cabins. The hull is Otam’s classic deep-V shape, mounting two or four engines - the twin 2600 HP MTU diesels coupled to Arneson surface drives can be replaced by a configuration comprising four Caterpillar or MTU units. The result is a top speed of 50 knots, but a version with Rolla props is currently being tested out, pushing the maximum speed to a jaw-dropping 55-58 knots!
Son pocos los astilleros que proponen verdaderos barcos a motor abiertos u “open”. La mayoría se limita a los modelos hard top, con un techo que cubre la bañera, pero es casi la misma diferencia que existe en los coches entre un modelo cabriolet y un modelo targa. En cambio el astillero italiano Otam, con el Millennium 80, se atreve a exagerar presentando al mercado un yate de 24 metros sin una estructura rígida sino con un roll-bar. Es un yate muy deportivo con un parabrisas envolvente y sus dos tomas de aire en fibra de carbono son de inspiración automovilística. La librea también tiene sus raíces en los coches pues sus colores son de GT (Gran Turismo): Blu Corsa, Rosso Maranello, Titanio, Black y Gold Grey. Pero podéis elegir también un color personalizado. El layout está centrado en la bañera: doble diván en forma de C, el cual puede cubrirse con un techo bimini top (el hard top es un opcional). La zona del bar es doble y posee ice maker, neveras y grill. Hacia la popa se encuentra un pequeño sillón con mesita, una zona para tomar el sol ubicada sobre el garaje del tender. En la proa hay una sección más para tomar un baño o broncearse. Bajo cubierta, existe la posibilidad de customizar el interior, sino el astillero ofrece dos versiones con 3 o 4 cabinas: una central para el armador, una vip en la proa y una o dos cabinas dobles para los huéspedes. La obra viva o carena del yate es el clásico casco de la Otam en forma de V profunda la cual otorga la posibilidad de instalar dos o cuatro motores: dos MTU de 2600 HP diesel con hélices de superficie Arneson o cuatro Caterpillar o MTU. La velocidad es de 50 nudos y actualmente se está probando una versión con hélices Rolla que alcanza la velocidad de 55-58 nudos!

The straight route and the Natural Method The quickest way from A to B is a straight line. But if you want to apply this idea in your everyday life, then build straight roads everywhere or take up parkour. “Using the city, instead of letting it use you”, says David Belle. Together with Sébastien Foucan he is one of the godfathers of this sport, which first appeared in France in the late 1990s. He explains that when you jump from one obstacle to another to move around the urban environment, leap over a wall, twist yourself around in order to pass between the bars of a set of railings or spring from rooftop to rooftop, “You have to be like a monkey or a puma crossing a river. When you see them you think, ‘Oh, look, how beautiful!’ But the animal isn’t thinking about looking good, it just wants to achieve its purpose using the most efficient movements”. So these aren’t the people who fly from the third floor or trace pirouettes in the air as they leap from here to there. The first is more like something you see on YouTube, while the second is free running, once a synonym of parkour but now used to describe a version that is more spectacular but less efficient and farther removed from the spirit of the original. Davide Polli, 30, is the oldest Italian performer and president of the Milan Monkeys, Italy’s most famous traceur workshop (a traceur is a parkour practitioner, someone who traces a path through life). “We base ourselves on Georges Hébert’s Natural Method”, he says. “Georges was the Frenchman the who in the early 1900s realised that in order to allow mankind’s athletic capabilities to be expressed to the full, you have to develop ten activities - walking, running, jumping, four-legged movement, climbing, balance, throwing, lifting, self-defence and swimming. It’s a perfect physical activity, everyone from five to ninety-five can do it, it’s all in the mind. Parkour is for everyone, but not everyone is for parkour. There are no competitions - you alone decide what to do, and when”. The absence of competition is one of the keys to the concept - in the words of Jess Lishman, a young traceur from London, “The great charm of parkour is that you can do it in your own time, when the spirit takes you. The contests that are starting to appear are something different from parkour. Parkour is a way of becoming stronger, on reaching objectives we set ourselves. We’re not striving to be better than anyone else. And that’s partly why it doesn’t bother me that I’m not as strong as the men”. David Polli, 30 años, el más veterano performer italiano, y presidente del Milan Monkeys, las más famosa oficina italiana de traceur (los que trazan el camino), clarifica: «Nos basamos en el Método natural de George Hébert, francés que al comienzo del siglo pasado entiende que con el fin de llevar a la máxima expresión las dotes atléticas del hombre debían desarrollarse 10 actividades: caminar, correr, saltar, cuadrupedia, escalada, equilibrismo, lanzar, levantar, defenderse y nadar. Es una actividad física perfecta, de los 5 a los 95 años todo está en la cabeza de quien la practica. Parkour es para todos, pero no todos están hechos para el parkour. No hay competiciones, sólo tú decides qué hacer y cuándo». Y la ausencia de carreras es una de las claves: como dice Jess Lishman, una joven traceur londinense: «Lo atractivo del parkour es que puedes practicarlo a tu propio ritmo y siguiendo tu espíritu. Las carreras que están surgiendo son algo diferente del parkour, que es una disciplina para ser más fuertes y lograr metas que nos fijamos a nosotros mismos y no tratar de ser mejor que los demás. Y es por esta razón que no me molesta ser menos fuerte que los hombres», nos cuenta antes de irse saltando de una pared a otra.

Through the descriptive power of his poetic gift, Tom Pow relates the extraordinary life of Scottish illustrator and artist Thomas Watling. Convicted in 1788 of faking Bank of Scotland bank notes, a capital crime, he was sentenced to deportation for fourteen years to the newly-founded colony of Botany Bay, Australia. He was supported during his exile in Sydney Cove by Surgeon General John White. White’s passionate interest in nature meant that Watling was able to dedicate himself to his art. He was a pioneer in the field of illustrating birds, animals and landscapes, and came to be recognised as the most important professional painter of the Australian continent, leaving behind a precious record of animals and people. After receiving a pardon, in 1797 he returned to Dumfries, where he died in 1814. Gracias a su potencia poética, Tom Pow recorre la extraordinaria vida de Thomas Watling, ilustrador y pintor escocés. Fue acusado por haber hecho circular billetes falsos en la Bank of Scotland, en aquel momento era un delito capital por lo que fue condenado en 1788 a 14 años de deportación en la colonia recién fundada Botany Bay, en Australia. Durante su exilio en la bahía de Sidney, recibió el apoyo del cirujano Tom White, apasionado naturalista y gracias a él pudo dedicarse al arte. Fue un pionero en pintar pájaros, animales y paisajes y será reconocido como el primer pintor profesional del continente austral. Dejó un valioso legado del mundo natural y humano. MANTA RESORT There’s no way you’ll feel like a fish out of water at the Manta Resort on the tropical island of Pemba, off Zanzibar. It’s a floating wooden structure on three levels, anchored to the Indian Ocean floor, and includes a sun-terrace raft with lounge and bathroom. There’s also an underwater bedroom surrounded by windows and night lights, enabling guests to enjoy an all-round view of the marine setting. It’s designed by Mikael Genberg of the Genberg Underwater Hotel company in Sweden.
Seguramente no te sentirás como un pez fuera del agua en Manta Resort, en la isla tropical de Pemba en Zanzíbar. Es una estructura flotante de madera, anclada en las profundidades del Océano Indico y tiene tres niveles: su terraza estilo balsa sirve para tomar el sol durante el día o mirar las estrellas durante la noche, la plataforma a nivel del mar tiene un comedor y un baño, en cambio la habitación bajo el agua es el dormitorio, rodeado de cristales y faros nocturnos para disfrutar a 360° de todo el panorama submarino. El proyecto es de Mikael Genberg, de la sociedad sueca Genberg Underwater Hotel.

ITHAA RESTAURANT LOVERS DEEP The name means “mother-of-pearl”, and it’s on the Rangali atoll in the Maldives. Immersed in crystal-clear waters, this truly unique restaurant - part of the Conrad Maldives Rangali Resort - is reached via a spiral staircase leading down to a depth of five metres below the surface of the sea. The main course is the 180° view of the marine flora and fauna. The panorama is at its most spectacular at lunchtime, when the sun sits high overhead, its rays piercing the depths and filling the restaurant’s surroundings with brilliant light. There are only twelve places, reservation is obligatory and the prices a little fierce. Not surprising, perhaps, in a real underwater restaurant. The space can be transformed into a private suite on request. Su nombre significa “perla” y se encuentra en las Maldivas, exactamente en el atolón de Rangali. Inmerso en aguas cristalinas, este restaurant forma parte del Conrad Maldives Rangali Resort y se llega a través de una escalera caracol con la cual se desciende cinco metros bajo el nivel del mar. ¿Cuál es el plato principal? Una panorámica a 180° de la flora y de la fauna marina. Su máximo esplendor es durante el almuerzo pues, en ese momento, el sol desde lo alto del cielo envía sus rayos hacia el agua y todo alrededor resplandece. Solamente hay lugar para 12 personas, la reserva es obligatoria y la cuenta bastante profunda, no existe otra posibilidad en un restaurante subacuático. Si lo deseáis, podéis pedir transformar el lugar en una suite privada.
