Mauritius

n just 50 years of independence, this Indian Ocean outpost has become a world-leading tourism hotspot, earning it a place in Lonely Planetʼs top ten destinations to visit in 2018. It was the Mauritian painter and visionary poet Malcolm de Chazal who said: ‘Mauritius seems to have been sculpted and painted by a tasteful giant’. Born from a cataclysmic volcanic eruption around eight million years ago, the world’s most famous extinct bird – the dodo – put this pocket-sized tropical island on the map, but its tourism has kept it there. And in 2018, Hollywood added an element of glamour with the release of ‘sexy noir’ Serenity, starring A-listers, Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, a mysterious tale of a fishing boat captain whose past crashes up against his life on a small tropical island, filmed on Mauritius. Mauritius is gifted with a beautiful natural landscape of miniature wind-sculpted mountains, shielding pockets of native forest with ebony trees and rare birds, surrounded by the Indian Ocean. Its miles of palm-fringed sandy beaches, almost entirely encircled by coral reefs, are now home to luxury hotels and resorts, with top-notch service. Safe and easy to explore, with an endless supply of inspirational travel experiences, Mauritius is compact enough for you to swim with dolphins in the morning and go ziplining at an eco-park in the afternoon.

10

The islands’ Dutch, French and British legacy is reflected in colonial mansions and botanical gardens, while hospitable locals of African, Indian and Chinese heritage give the island an authentic feel, with colourful markets and temples, fusion cuisine, and the sashaying séga. Mauritius is great value when compared to other Indian Ocean destinations and celebrations for the recent golden anniversary has helped put the island in the global spotlight. The MTPA predicts six percent year-on-year growth by the end of 2018, following four years of doubledigit growth from the UK since 2012.

THE VIBRANT NORTH Grand Baie is the epicentre of the north, situated on a wine-glass shaped sheltered bay around an emerald lagoon in the northwest, with more sandy coves and sunshine than anywhere else on the island. Nicknamed the Creole Cote D’Azur or ‘Le Trop’, it stretches three kilometres along the coastal road to Pereybère, and has shopping, restaurants and the island’s best nightlife. Activities range from swimming with dolphins or an undersea walk, a tandem sky dive, and championship golf. Excursions include a submarine trip past ancient shipwrecks to a catamaran or speedboat cruise to the pristine northern islands. In the sleepier northeast, lies the fishing village of Grande Gaube.

The northern plains are covered in sugar plantations which, once as expensive as gold, shaped this tropical island’s history. The story can even be heard on a new electro-bike ride which includes a stop at L’Aventure du Sucre interactive museum. Stroll through shady palmlined avenues to a giant Amazon lily pond at 18th century Pamplemousses botanical gardens, which houses over 500 plant species. This region has the island’s finest colonial heritage, from plantation houses including the striking Eureka, a feat of engineering with 109 doors and turreted rooftop windows in the Moka Mountains, to Château Labourdonnais, modelled on Versailles, with an artisanal rum bar and open-sided gourmet restaurant. For a bird’s eye view of the bustling port capital, Port Louis, take an easy hike up Le Pouce (‘the thumb’) or explore authentic Mauritius on a Port Louis street food or cultural tour, with shopping at Le Caudan Waterfront.

THE EXCLUSIVE EAST

32 Welcome amended.indd 4

Plan your Mauritius holiday with the free MyMauritius App, with top things to see and do, along with an interactive map and travel checklist.

The most celebrated powder white beaches such as the 10km-long Belle Mare Plage, stretch along the breezy east coast. The fishing village of Trou d’Eau Douce, home to the only resort, is the jumping off point to popular island playground Ile aux Cerfs, with translucent turquoise waters, watersports and golf. Eco-adventures in the southeast range from a powerboat trip to the islands to whizzing around by quad-bike or segway or riding the longest zipline in the Indian Ocean at Domaine L’Etoile eco-park. A ranger-led tour at tiny Ile aux Aigrettes nature reserve includes sightings of rare pink pigeons, Aldabra tortoises and the Telfair skink or there’s a nature walk through ancient ebony trees at La Vallée de Ferney, with Mauritian bat-watching at sundown. A new electro-bike tour of Grand Port offers a slice of island history, from the first Dutch landing

in the mangrove overlooking Lion Mountain to Mahébourg, the original port capital.

THE SUNSET COAST An 8km-long swathe of golden sand with calm, shallow water stretches from lively Flic en Flac, the main resort on the ‘sunset’ coast, to tranquil Wolmar, overlooking Tamarin Mountain. Black River (Rivière Noire) famed for its world-class big game fishing, including marlin, is the jumping off point for dolphinswimming in Tamarin Bay, where the surf’s up from July to September. Casela World of Adventures offers encounters with African animals and activities aplenty, from camel-riding to a hair-raising canyon swing. The lush Black River Gorges National Park offers sightings of waterfalls and rare birds, and sacred crater lake Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao to locals). The Chamarel highlands are home to geological marvel, the Seven Coloured Earths, picturesque Chamarel Falls and the Ebony Forest Reserve.

THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH The island’s most beautiful coastal drive winds past the surf-sculpted basalt cliffs at Gris Gris to monolith Le Morne Brabant, taking in rustic fishing villages, such as Baie du Cap, roadside fruit stalls and deserted beaches. Take a spectacular hike up UNESCO-listed Le Morne Brabant, with a poignant slave history. From here you can also see the exclusive Le Morne Peninsula, a world-class kitesurfing spot. In the green foothills of Black River Gorges National Park in the southwest lies Bel Ombre, the region’s only resort, with sandy beaches and a Heritage Nature Reserve, offering new trips into the Jurassic-like UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Glass-bottom boat trips head out from Blue Bay Marine Park in the southeast and encounters with crocodiles, giant tortoises and the Mauritius fruit bat await at La Vanille Nature Park.

his remote tropical outpost was one of the last places in the world to be colonised. With no native population, Mauritians are all descendants of immigrants, which may explain the racial and religious harmony which is a cornerstone of Mauritian society.

In the Indian tradition, Mahindranath’s artwork is on the buses that ply the island, often emblazoned with amusing slogans such as ‘King of Love’ or ‘Noisy Travel’, while a free street art app from My Moris, uncovers contemporary works in Port Louis.

A REAL MIX

INSIDER TOURS

Mauritius is sometimes referred to as a ‘world in one island’, and you don’t need to go far to get a sense of multicultural Mauritius. Painted Hindu temples, mosques and churches jostle with Chinese boutiques and colonial houses and colourful markets are piled high with everything from cassava to curry. People mix and match traditions here, so don’t be surprised to see Mauritians French cheek-kissing, eating baguettes or waving bonjour. Indo-Mauritian women are as comfortable in Levis as in saris and as happy eating crepes and croissants as curries and chapatis. Although most Mauritians speak some English, and all parle Francais, what unites communities is the Kreol language, and the national dance, the hip-wiggling, African-inspired séga. Traditional life is still visible around the island. Creole fishermen still set sail in wooden pirogues on the south coast, and in the backstreets séga blares from Creole-style wooden houses decorated with lambrequins. The Mauritian art scene is equally eclectic. Paintings by Malcolm de Chazal – often found adorning hotel walls – contrast with the ‘art

The best way to get under the island’s skin is with a cultural tour. Culture specialists, My Moris (mymoris.mu/en) tours explore the local scene by bike or on foot. They range from ‘A Divine Morning’ – spiritual exploration at a Hindu temple, with a cooking class in its restaurant – to a musical initiation in the ravanne using a goat-skin drum central to traditional Mauritian séga inspired by the island’s African heritage, with master player, Daniella Bastien. The ‘Origins of Port Louis’ looks at the prison where ‘maroons’ or slaves were detained and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Aapravasi Ghat, where the ‘coolies’ once disembarked, offers an exclusive harbour boat tour. A scenic bike adventure through a sugar plantation reveals what 19th century life was like here. Most hotels and resorts feature séga performances, traditionally around a bonfire on the beach. One&Only Le Saint Géran’s exclusive experiences range from ‘Port Louis Unwrapped’ where guests discover the hidden corners and celebrated city icons on a private walking tour, to an audience and walking tour of the city’s street art with artist and collector Salim Currimjee.

family meal equals happiness for Mauritians, and the islandʼs cuisine – a fascinating mash up of food from four continents – makes it a favourite with foodies too. Food is everywhere in Mauritius, colourful markets pile high with local produce from lychees to vanilla – used to flavour homegrown tea and gajacks (snacks) sizzling at beachside street food stalls and trucks. Traditional local restaurants offer a dizzying variety of tasty, typical Mauritian dishes, reflecting the island’s French, Indian, African and Chinese heritage. Alongside the curries, biriani and vindaye (fish or meat coated in turmeric, ginger, chilli and mustard seeds), look out for Creolestyle rougaille (fish or meat in a spicy tomato sauce with thyme and chilli), Chinese-inspired bol renverse (or upside-down dish) and French-style meat stew or daube. Accompany it with a local Phoenix beer – or healthy citronelle – water spiced with lemon grass and ginger - and a homemade rhum arrangé digestive, flavoured with coconut to chilli, lined up on the bar.

AUTHENTIC MAURITIAN FLAVOUR Most visitors will eat out at lunchtime, and food venues are as eclectic as the Mauritius cuisine. Kooky choices range from traditional food served in Red Bus Snack in Bel Ombre to freshly-farmed seafood at La Case du Pecheur in Bambous Virieux, with kayaks for after dinner, and at Tante L’Atalie in Pamplemousses, a prix fixe lunch overlooking vintage cars in the orchard is a must. Visitors rave about the chicken cooked in island vanilla at the terracotta-roofed Bois Cheri Restaurant with its wrap around balcony in the middle of a southern tea estate, and Chef Badoun’s traditional Mauritian lunches include the likes of dry beef curry and fish vindaye at Andrea Lodges near Souillac. The veranda of a colonial plantation house is the place to enjoy gourmet specialties such as smoked marlin (delicious paired with palm heart salad), dry beef, or chicken and prawn, curries and seasonal fresh game, venison and wild boar. Mauritius’ rich culinary heritage is reflected at resorts island wide. La Pirogue’s recentlyrenovated Coconut Café serves Mauritian street food at lunchtime and new beach braai, Tribe, inspired by the islands’ African heritage, is accompanied by fire and drums.

FAMILIES Easy accessible, with sunny, safe beaches, great value luxury hotels and plenty to explore, Mauritius is ideal for family holidays and its family-centric culture means kids get spoilt rotten. Direct overnight flights mean jet lag is minimal and large hotels and resorts cater for all ages, with babysitters to hand, free kids clubs and increasingly, teens clubs. Unlike some tropical islands, once the kids have had enough of the beach, there’s plenty for families to see and do on the island. At Casela kids can be a ‘zoo-keeper for the day’ or ride the new Tulawaka Gold Coaster down the mountain, while new kids activities at La Vanille Nature Park include feeding baby crocodiles and Madagascan lemurs. Eco family fun ranges from rides on electric bikes, or pony treks in Chamarel, to quad-biking, ziplining or hiking in Domaine L’Etoile and a Treetop Adventure Park on Ile aux Cerfs. DIY adventures include hiking up Le Pouce, or along nature trails to spot monkeys and rare birds in the Black River Gorges National Park or the Ebony Forest Reserve in Chamarel. Teen thrills

include canyoning at Tamarin Falls, a tandem sky-dive from 10,000 feet near Grand Baie and climbing Le Morne Brabant mountain. Youngsters can see clownfish, turtles and sharks at the Mauritius Aquarium, take a glass bottom boat trip in Blue Bay or La Nessee, or a semi-submersible trip to see underwater scenery in Grand Baie. There’s an under-sea walk in the north and east, dolphin watching in Tamarin Bay and sea-karting at Black River. Mini culture vultures can learn how sugar shaped the island’s history at interactive L’Aventure du Sucre, or see giant Amazon water lilies at Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens. For rainy days, the Curious Corner of Chamarel house of illusion has stairs made of piano keys, an upside down kitchen and a mirror maze. SILVER TRAVELLERS The island’s luxury and service levels, combined with its rich experiences from culinary to cultural, make it appealing to an older audience. Cultural tours from My Moris in the island’s north range from a stroll through Port Louis’ street food offerings, to attending a rehearsal of Geet Gawai women-only singers, dancers and musicians who play at Hindu weddings. MILLENNIALS The island has an adventurous side, which is particularly appealing to millenials. Watery island adventures include laser sailing at Mont Choisy, sea-karting at Black River, parasailing in Grand Baie and kitesurfing. Le Morne’s ‘One Eye’ is among the top five spots on the planet for kitesurfing, with a protected bay for beginners to learn. Lessons are available year-round with premium kitesurfing schools at nearby The St. Regis Mauritius Resort and LUX* Le Morne. As an English-speaking destination with friendly hospitable locals, Mauritius is safe and easy to explore. By road, Mini-Mokes and Harley Davidsons are now for hire in the north but the island is equally accessible on foot, bike or by boat. Electrobike rides with Nou Zil (‘Our Island’) – now offered in the north and south – can include hanging out with a rasta in Chamarel while street food walking tours with Taste Buddies are the best way to experience the bustling capital, ‘Por-Louee’. ith perfect golfing weather year-round, and some of the best modern golf courses on earth, the demand for golf in Mauritius is growing along with its reputation. Mauritius was the third country in the world to play golf (after the UK and India), and has the best golf experience of any long-haul island destination. In 2015, Heritage Golf Club made international golfing history by playing host to the first ever tri-sanctioned golf tournament in the world and put the island firmly on the global golf map. The AfrAsia Mauritius Open is held on the Ernie Els-designed course at Anahita Golf and Spa Resort in (November/December) and the MCB Tour Championship European Golf Senior Tour is held in December.

Golf Club, in the green southwest, voted the ‘Indian Ocean’s Best Golf Course’ at the World Golf Awards for the last four years. A second golf course – the islands’ 11th – co-designed by Peter Matkovich and Louis Oosthuizen opens here in 2019.

BEST IN THE BUSINESS Voted ‘Best International Golf Course’ by Golf Journal in June 2017, the ‘island’ golfing experience on the Bernhard Langer signature course at the Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club in the east, is a must. For a game to remember, stay and play in a luxurious Bubble Lodge with butler service, clubhouse dinner and complimentary golf. Independent 18hole championship courses include the island’s highest, Avalon Golf Estate, on a forested plateau at 500m at Bois Cheri tea plantation, and the latest to open, Mont Choisy Golf Course, designed by Peter Matkovich, on a nature reserve near Grand Baie, near northern hotels. Nine-hole courses include a pitch and putt at Shandrani Beachcomber Resort, an urban golf course at the Maritim Resort & Spa Mauritius, and a foot golf course at the Heritage Golf Club. Keen golfers can sign up for a seven-night ultimate golfing holiday with pro-golf legend, Jeremy Dale, with six tutorials, a golfing clinic and friendly competitions at Paradis Golf Club at Le Morne Peninsula, in December 2018 and March 2019, from £2,600 per person.

NATURAL LURES

This island is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Visitors can climb minimountains and explore indigenous forests, used as a refuge for rare birds. Keen twitchers can book a bespoke bird-watching tours from specialist Yanature (trekkingmauritius.com). Visitors can hike in the Black River Gorges National Park or venture on a DIY familyfriendly forest walk to Black River Peak. A new boat tour goes upriver for a guided walk at nature sanctuary La Vallée de Ferney in the Bambous Mountains, with sightings of Mauritius Kestrels at feeding time, and Mauritian bat watching at sunset. Casela World of Adventures on the west coast features wildlife safaris and interactions with African animals, including a new lion cub interaction, while Domaine de L’Etoile in the southeast offers ‘the longest zipline in the Indian Ocean’. Take a microlight, seaplane or helicopter ride for a bird’s eye view of the island, or an adrenalin-pumping tandem skydive free-falling at 200km/hour with Skydive Mauritius (skydivemauritius.com). Nature-based adventures include canyoning at Tamarin Falls with Vertical World (verticalworldltd.com), which, with seven cascades,

is one of the island’s most impressive. Go horse-riding at La Vieille Cheminée (lavieillecheminee.com), a farm in the Chamarel Highlands or at upmarket stables, Haras du Morne (harasdumorne.com), with rides on Le Morne Brabant and ‘swimming with horses’ available for experienced riders. A mountain bike ride on the cliffs with Yemaya Adventures (yemayaadventures.com) takes in Albion’s atmospheric lighthouse and new at 20 Degres Sud are mini mokes and a private trekking guide for hire. The island’s colonial legacy can be felt at plantation houses, offering table d’hote lunches and artisanal rum tasting and the ancient port capital Mahebourg has a Monday market, naval museum and a waterfront promenade.

Pink pigeons and giant tortoises are guaranteed sightings at Ile aux Aigrettes

culture vulture

A walking tour through the capital, Port Louis, with street food stalls, colonial architecture, museums, duty free shopping and the island’s largest market, is a must!

WATERY ADVENTURES The best snorkelling spots are in Blue Bay Marine Park and the pristine waters around Coin de Mire. Underwater sightseeing around Grand Baie include a semi-submersible, an aqua scooter ride and an undersea walk. Mauritius’ dive sites are the best in the Indian Ocean, and dive centres cater for all levels and often offer PADI courses. Favourite nautical adventures include an early morning boat trip to swim with and watch wild dolphins play in Tamarin Bay or a catamaran cruise to Ile aux Cerfs. Or for something a bit more fast-paced, One Love’s hot pink powerboat can whisk you to remote southeast islands or take a sea kayaking expedition to northern Ile d’Ambre with Yemaya Adventures.

auritiusʼ mild and tropical climate makes it the perfect destination at any time of year. Try to time a visit with a local colourful festival or event, a rum, food or music festival or a sporting challenge. The Mauritian summer (October to May) is hot, humid and rainy – although rain falls in short bursts and mostly on the central plateau. The Mauritian winter (June to September) is cooler and dry, which may best suit young families. Average temperatures range from 20°C to 26°C. The UK summer school holidays and wedding season coincide with winter and the best holiday bargains.

SPORTS AND NATURE The breezier east coast is favoured for watersports between November and April, while the generally clear, calm and warm waters on the sheltered west coast are ideal for diving and deep-sea fishing. The Mauritius Billfish Release International Tournament is at Black River in late January – peak marlin season. Seasoned kiters come from May to October when winds are strongest, with Kiteival (kitesurfing festival) in July/August. Surfs up at Tamarin June to August, with free coaching from pros in surf-ski week in Bel Ombre June/July. Annual events on the Mauritian sports calendar include the ‘five-star’ Mauritius Tour Beachcomber (MTB) mountain bike

With its poignant slave past, Le Morne is the centre of Abolition of Slavery day on1st February, and colourful Maha Shivaratree in February/March, where pilgrims gather at the crater lake Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin), is the largest Hindu festival outside of India. Chinese dragon and lion dancers at Chinese Spring Festival (New Year) parade through Port Louis’ Chinatown and on 12th March Mauritius National Day sees festivities celebrating independence from Britain in1968. Visitors can sign up for The Dodo Trail, an all-level trail run in July which crosses mountains and private estates in the ‘green’ southwest. On 2nd September 2019, Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin) crater lake is the place to be for Ganesh Chaturthi Ganesha, the Hindu god of wisdom’s birthday, where Mauritian Hindus cleanse their statues in the lake.
