Eternal Word, only begotten Son of God, Teach me true generosity. Teach me to serve you as you deserve. To give without counting the cost, To fight heedless of wounds, To labor without seeking rest, To sacrifice myself without thought of any reward Save the knowledge that I have done your will. Amen. Saint Ignatius of Loyola

Annual Report 2011-2012 School Year

chairman’s letter Dear Friends of Bishop Noll Institute, On April 27, 2012, I gathered with about 260 supporters of Bishop Noll Institute for the Annual Bishop Noll Institute Emporium. Transformed with yards of gold and blue material and indirect lighting, the cafeteria became a spacious showroom for many auction items. More important, the cafeteria became an elegant meeting place where I was blessed to encounter men and women who support Bishop Noll Institute with their creativity, time, and financial resources. In the end, the event was marked by a lavish outpouring of generosity that was grounded in unity of purpose and a desire to contribute to a powerful tradition. By the time the Emporium ended, I was reminded continuously of the two reasons I offered to chair, for the third consecutive year, the Bishop Noll Institute Board of Limited Jurisdiction. First, I offer my financial, creative, and temporal resources to Bishop Noll Institute because making an investment in the lives of Bishop Noll Institute students is the right thing to do. Second, I offer my resources of time, treasure, and talent because I want to contribute to the success of Bishop Noll Institute and the potential for change that the faculty, administration, and staff can effect in the lives of young men and women and in the community. As you explore the Noll Today/Annual Report, you will see my motivations come to life. Above all, you will see the impact that unity of purpose can have on the lives of young people. Thank you for your contribution to the work and ministry of Bishop Noll Institute. Your generosity drives the process that generates change in the lives of the students and the future of the community. May God bless you for doing the right thing and supporting a tradition of success. Faithfully yours in the Lord Jesus,

Rev. Kevin Huber, D. Min Chairman of the Board of Limited Jurisdiction

OUR MISSION

Bishop Noll Institute, a diverse, Catholic college preparatory school, partners with local faith communities to empower young adults to live their faith in Christ through ministry, scholarship and leadership.

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Almighty and ever-faithful Lord, gratefully acknowledging Your mercy and humbly admitting our need, we pledge our trust in You and each other. Filled with desire, we respond to Your call for discipleship by shaping our lives in imitation of Christ. We profess that the call requires us to be stewards of Your gifts. As stewards, we receive Your gifts gratefully, cherish and tend them in a responsible manner, share them in practice and love with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. We pledge to our ongoing formation as stewards and our responsibility to call others to that same endeavor. Almighty and ever-faithful God, it is our fervent hope and prayer that You who have begun this good work in us will bring it to fulfillment in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

highlights of 2011-2012 Bishop Noll Institute completed its 90th year as the premier Catholic high school in Northwest Indiana. We welcomed 137 freshmen, the largest freshman class since 2001, and a 28 percent increase over the previous year. A diverse student body, our students hail from 42 different zip codes in Illinois and northwest Indiana. Bishop Noll was also accepted into the School Choice Scholarship Program (Indiana voucher program), which allows the state to pay for a portion or all of a student’s tuition and fees at a non-public school such as Bishop Noll Institute. The students accepted at Bishop Noll through this program had a successful year. Our 2012 graduates had the opportunity to earn college credits last year through AP courses as well as dual credit courses taught by select Bishop Noll teachers who serve as Indiana University and Purdue University adjunct faculty. Out of 107 seniors, 52 percent were enrolled in AP or dual credit classes, and many earned one semester or more of college credit while attending Bishop Noll. In addition, the class of 2012 received $4.5 million in college scholarships, and 15 percent of the 107 graduates will continue to play sports at the collegiate level.

Principal Colleen McCoy-Cejka was awarded the Lilly Teacher Creativity Fellowship Award. Colleen’s grant proposal, “And Sings My Soul,” was one out of 120 entries to win $8,000 to spend on a personal renewal adventure. A music school in Maine and a music festival were part of her exciting adventure. As part of her grant, she promised to rebuild the BNI Band Program. Once a thriving and award-winning program, the band needed a boost to get back on track. Her promise was fulfilled this past year with the rebirth of the BNI Band program. Bishop Noll students excel in extracurricular activities in addition to their success in the classroom. The rebirth of our band program began with eight students, and grew to thirty in the first year. The band marched in the Columbus Day and St. Patrick’s Day parade in Chicago as well as local parades on the 4th of July. Boys soccer, basketball, baseball, and girls softball were conference champions in the Greater South Shore Conference. Boys baseball and girls tennis were sectional champions, and ten track individuals as well as three wrestlers qualified for regionals. One student on the girls track team and one wrestler qualified for the state championships. Boys basketball Coach Drew Trost and boys soccer Coach Armando Garza both achieved their 100th victory. In addition, our drama club again presented two very successful productions, Wait Until Dark, and the musical The Wizard of Oz. Other clubs, too, played an important part of school life: multi-cultural club, National Honor Society, and student council, just to name a few.

Bishop Noll students displayed their strong Catholic faith through their many service projects throughout the year. Our students supported the Northwest Indiana Food Bank by collecting 4,500 food items during the Thanksgiving season, as well as collecting over 400 jars of peanut butter later in the year. The National Honor Society also led service projects which included a Christmas cards for those serving in the military, hygiene boxes to the Children’s Hunger Fund, and three successful blood drives for the American Red Cross. The students also put together its 2nd St. Baldrick’s Day Head Shaving event. In addition, BNI students individually volunteered over 5,000 hours of service to their churches and communities.

This past school year, BNI welcomed back four alumni in the classroom. Phil Ponce ’67, Dave Dolak ’76, Rich Sobilo ’83, and Caryn Rousseau ’96 came back to teach students about media, physics, engineering, and journalism.

Sister Joseph Mary Hoess CSC, ’48, and Christopher Nicolini were inducted into the Bishop Noll Hall of Honor in March. Sister Joseph Mary Hoess, who has been educating young women in Bangladesh for over 56 years, was recognized as an Outstanding Alumna. Christopher Nicolini was recognized for Outstanding Service for his work as a teacher, guidance counselor and coach in the Diocese of Gary for the past 36 years.

The school building received much needed upgrades over the past year. Unused home economics classrooms were transformed into a state-of-the-art weight room to support our student athletes. The cafeteria also received new round tables and chairs replacing the original cafeteria furniture. New windows on the main floor, as well as a fresh coat of paint throughout the building, accented with the school colors and brightened our hallways. Our classrooms, already equipped with updated technology, received new classroom furniture more in line with 21st century teaching methods. Two students working on their Eagle Scout projects also helped improve our school; one student built a new trophy case for the Hall of Champions, while another student landscaped the main entrance and built cement benches.

The 31st Annual Emporium was held in April. An evening of raffles as well as silent and live auctions was enjoyed by over 240 alumni and friends. A huge success, over $58,000 was raised to support student scholarships at Bishop Noll. In July, the Bishop Noll Annual Golf Outing at Innsbrook Country Club brought alumni from several decades together to raise money for the BNI Annual Fund. The Building Fund Golf Outing made its inaugural debut at Briar Ridge Golf Course in June. Over $77,000 for the auditorium renovation was raised with the support of sponsors in the business community.

This year was BNI’s first annual Nollapalooza, a series of musical events supporting the auditorium renovation. The “All Alumni Revue” brought several alumni back to the same stage where they had once performed as Bishop Noll students. In addition, an Elvis tribute, two school productions, and a Christmas celebration performed by parish choirs within the Diocese of Gary were some of the highlights.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
