FALL 2013
greetings from our principal Dear Alumni and Friends, As I drove to work the other day, I approached a car that was driving well under the speed limit. The driver's head was barely visible above the seat. I began to think about how this person was going to impact my normally peaceful commute. I approached the car from behind and noticed that the out of state license plate said, “Pearl Harbor Survivor”. As a former U.S. History teacher, I became filled with a sense of excitement that a piece of our nation's history was in the car before me. I decided to pass this American hero. Once our cars became even, I looked over at the gentleman. The man was well into his eighties, was slightly hunched over, and intensely driving his car. For a brief moment, the man looked over at me and smiled. I smiled back. I began to think about all the things this man has seen and experienced at Pearl Harbor and throughout his life. It is amazing to envision the tragedy, the triumph, and the happiness he had seen in his eighty plus years of life.
This experience brought me to think about the history of Bishop Noll Institute. It is incredible to think that Bishop Noll has been educating students since 1921; 20 years before Pearl Harbor. Our beloved Institute has educated students through times of financial despair, World Wars, domestic strife, and times of peace. It is amazing to reflect on the history that is the foundation of our school. Bishop Noll Institute's history has been shaped by the tens of thousands of students and families that have walked our halls, celebrated our successes, supported us in difficult times, and strengthened the family bond between all Warriors. The building on 1519 Hoffman Street is special, historical, and producing new leaders each and every year. I thank you for all that you do for Bishop Noll Institute, and I look forward to your continued support. As Saint Francis of Assisi once said: “Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible”. Help us reach the impossible. Help us continue to make Bishop Noll Institute an educational destination. We look forward to seeing you! We are BNI! Mind, Body, and Soul, Craig S. Stafford Principal, Bishop Noll Institute

roll with the changes This past summer, the 1970s REO Speedwagon hit, Roll with the Changes, became the theme song in the Administrative offices here at Bishop Noll Institute. On June 7th we bid farewell to the Class of 2013. These 106 bright, young adults are off to colleges and universities across the United States with an excellent Bishop Noll education, and $6.5 million in college scholarship offers to support them on this exciting new journey in their lives. Almost immediately we began preparations to welcome the Class of 2017 to 1519 Hoffman Street! As the search for a new principal stretched into the summer, we all learned to wear many hats to ensure the new school year would begin without a hitch. In the blink of an eye, August 16th was here. The coming school year will undoubtedly bring about many positive changes, as we welcomed three new administrators to our team: Principal, Craig Stafford; Dean of Students, Matt Chico ’02; and Director of Admissions, Nancy Repay ’85. While many changes have taken place over the past several months here at Bishop Noll, there is one constant that will never change—our central purpose—our students. Beyond preparing
them for college and life in an ever-changing world, our mission extends to educate the whole student—mind, body and soul. As we begin our 92nd year, our goals have remained the same: rooted in Catholic values and traditions, Bishop Noll Institute will provide students with a rigorous college preparatory experience. In order to insure that the Bishop Noll tradition lasts to our 100th anniversary and many years beyond, we count on you, our valued alumni and friends, to help us accomplish our goals. Your prayers, time, and financial resources contribute to the success of Bishop Noll Institute, and will enable us to continue to make the positive changes necessary to prepare the next generation of BNI students for success in a global world. As we continue to “roll with the changes” here at Bishop Noll Institute, I would like to thank you for your past support of our ministry and belief in our successful future. May you continue to enjoy God’s many blessings,
Mary Ellen O’Neill Director of Institutional Advancement

welcome to our new principal BNI proudly welcomes Craig Stafford to our school Mr. Craig Stafford hit the ground running on August 1st. With just a few short weeks before the start of the 93rd year of operation at Bishop Noll Institute, Stafford was busy meeting faculty, staff, students, and parents—listening to them and assessing the needs for the coming school year. Stafford, 39, comes to Bishop Noll from the Duneland School Corporation, where he had served as assistant principal at Chesterton High School since July 2012. From 2006-2009 he was assistant principal at Chesterton Middle School, becoming principal there from 2009-2012. Prior to his years in the Duneland schools, Mr. Stafford was assistant principal at Krueger Middle School in Michigan City. Prior to his administrative duties, he taught social studies at both Merrillville High School and at Andrean High School, as well as Merrillville High School’s alternative school. Stafford is no stranger to Catholic education. A product of Catholic education, he attended St. Bridget School in Hobart and Andrean High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Ball State University in Muncie, IN and a master’s degree from Indiana University Northwest in Gary. Mr. Stafford is currently a doctoral candidate at Lewis University. Dr. Barbara O’Block, school superintendent of the Diocese of Gary, said of Stafford, “his energy and passion for the work of education characterizes a leader New BNI principal Craig Stafford welcomes sophomore, Thomas who will move from vision to strategy and implementation. I am sure all of Bishop Starks, on the first day of school. Noll’s stakeholders will find Mr. Stafford approachable, engaged and committed to Bishop Noll’s success.” Speaking about his new position here at Bishop Noll, Stafford said, “I am very excited about my new role here. I am very aware of Bishop Noll’s reputation as a premiere educational institution.” Speaking of a Catholic school education, he noted, “Catholic schools give students an opportunity to develop themselves as people who can give back to the community, people who understand a moral compass, who understand how their actions can result in the greater good of others.”
welcome to our new administrators Welcome new administrators Matt Chico is no stranger to alumni and friends of Bishop Noll. A popular face in the Advancement Office for the past six years, Chico was named Dean of Students effective July 1st. After graduating from Bishop Noll in 2002, Chico received his bachelor’s degree in Public Relations and Speech Communications from Indiana State University in 2007, and his Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2013. Of his appointment, Chico commented, “It is an awesome opportunity to be appointed Dean of Students at Bishop Noll. I look forward to working with the Noll community to build on our successes.” Nancy Repay is also no stranger to Bishop Noll Institute. The new Director of Admissions has a long history of Bishop Noll alums in her family, including husband Karl ’85, and sons Karl Jr. ’09, and Anthony, ’13. After graduating from BNI in 1985 Nancy received her bachelor’s degree in Management from Calumet College of St. Joseph. She went on to receive her Master’s in Education from Calumet College of St. Joseph in 2010. Prior to joining Bishop Noll, Mrs. Repay taught math, physical education, and health at St. John Bosco School in Hammond for 11 years, where she also served as Athletic Director. Of her new role she said, “As a Bishop Noll legacy and a parent of two BNI graduates, I am excited to give back for all that Bishop Noll has given to me.” Director of Admissions, Nancy Repay ’85 and Dean of Students, Matt Chico ’02

Nancy Repay ’85 joins the administrative team as the Director of Admissions. In addition to all of her Admissions work and responsibilities, she is teaching Integrated Math and Honors Algebra I. Dr. Laura Blaser joins the Science Department this year. She has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Physical Chemistry. CAMPUS MINISTRY NEW: Kairos Retreat Program
“Kairos,” is a Greek word which means “God’s time,” and is manifest religiously in the form of a four day Catholic retreat program for adolescents wherein they are invited to more seriously discover God in all things within the context of personal talks from peer and adult leaders, small and large group discussions, periods of silence and reflection, various integrated prayer experiences, and the Sacraments.
University of Notre Dame. He will be revitalizing the Campus Ministry program at Noll. Carolyn McGuire joins the English Department and has taken on the responsibility of being the freshmen class sponsor. Reina Ramirez ’07 teaches Spanish at Noll. She is also the sponsor for the junior class and the Multi Cultural Club. Andrew Ramker ’09 joins Noll teaching Computer Applications and Freshman Seminar. Jessica Ramos joins the Student Services department as our new College Counselor. She also teaches Career Exploration. Father Kevin Scalf joins the Theology Department part-time this year. He is also BNI’s Chaplain. Christine Trevino is no new face as she returns to the Science Department to continue her 25-year history with Noll. Welcome to all of our new faculty and staff. We are especially pleased to see so many alum return to teach at the school that shaped them Mind, Body, and Soul.
The real value of Kairos occurs in living out of the values of the retreat in one’s everyday life which is why follow-up meetings at the school are so vital for the ongoing effectiveness of the program. Kairos is traditionally regarded as one of the most powerful experiences of one’s high school career. It occurs at a retreat center off campus. Each of the three Catholic high schools within the Diocese of Gary has begun to offer multiple Kairos retreats throughout the year. While Catholic in design and process, Kairos is open to persons of all faith traditions.
Meet Our Campus Ministry Team As a priest of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood religious order, our charism of “reconciliation” tinges every dimension of the vocation God has given me. Certainly the jewel on the crown of reconciliation is the Sacrament itself, BNI Chaplain, but reconciliation also Fr. Kevin Scalf occurs when injustice is C.PP.S. reconciled with justice, illness with wellness, and darkness with light, all finding its terminal point in Jesus Christ, expressed in a uniquely Catholic dynamism of Word and Sacrament. My full-time ministry is Parochial Vicar at St. John the Baptist Parish, Whiting, IN. My position as chaplain, part-time faculty, and board-member at BNI is less than part-time, and was approved by Bishop Dale J. Melczek and my religious superior last year. Since then I have been inquiring with alumni, current students and employees about what makes Bishop Noll such a special place, and while the blessings of BNI are decidedly manifold, I knew from the beginning that I was becoming part of something much greater than myself, a place with an exceptional tradition of Christian living, loving and learning within the Catholic tradition. I have been blessed to be part of many Catholic high schools and colleges as a student, faculty member and administrator throughout my adult career, and during these experiences have participated in, and developed, new faith-based initiatives that have been developmentally suitable for adolescents. After many conversations with members of the Bishop Noll family, it seemed that now might be a good time to launch some of these new initiatives here and help to advance the mission and ministry of BNI. Since August we have organized prayer services before football games, begun preparing for the “monolithic” Kairos retreat program for Juniors, and are looking ahead to class Masses, and team commissioning services for the sports within a particular season. We are off to a holy start! It is good to be collaborating with our new principal, Mr. Craig Stafford, and our new full-time Campus Minister, Mr. Dan Masterton. Be assured of my prayers and support for the Bishop Noll family. In Christ, Fr. Kevin M. Scalf, C.PP.S.

As a Chicago native and University of Notre Dame graduate, I am a weathered Midwesterner, excited to get to know this new yet familiar place. I graduated from Notre Dame cum laude with a degree BNI Campus in Honors Theology and worked Minister, a year each as a volunteer lay Dan Masterton minister in Ireland and a high school theology teacher, coach, and campus minister in California. I am happy to begin work at Bishop Noll as the full-time campus minister and dive head-long into cultivating this part of our school's landscape. Before our opening of the year Mass, I invited the BNI community to reflect on the following idea: grass grows; no one has ever seen grass grow; yet, if you lay down in the grass for a long time, the growth will envelop you. As Fr. Kevin and I start our ministry here at BNI, we will seek ways to broaden and deepen the spiritual life for our community. Our hope is that through more carefully planned retreats, through additional service opportunities, through greater empowerment of peer leadership in faith, we can give the students of Bishop Noll more and more opportunity to take ownership of their faith during their time here. Teens who discover their faith now will live upon a stronger foundation in college and beyond. We endeavor to educate and care for these students in mind, body, and soul, and my hope is that campus ministry can make an equally profound impact on students as their sports teams and their classes and clubs. As I get to know these students and they get used to a full-time campus minister, I hope I can offer them liturgical ministries, retreat invitations, campus spirituality, and service possibilities that respond to their desire to serve and grow. The development of faith can be slow, stunted, even regressive. Campus ministry will seek to nurture growth and point the way to Christ. The growth may be slow; it may go unseen. But if we are patient with our faith, if I am patient in my new role, if we simply “lie in the grass,” the growth will envelop us. God bless, Dan Masterton, Campus Minister
NEW: Football Team Services
A Liturgy of the Word service with music occurs before every football game wherein the priest or campus minister seeks to establish some kind of relevant association between scriptural readings and the athletic challenge at hand with a direct link to how these themes can concretely unify the BNI football family. This is one special way that the strong athletic tradition at Bishop Noll is more deliberately fused with its strong religious tradition. Our football team has embraced these communal experiences of prayer and we look forward to introducing these options to other BNI teams. The Bishop Noll Football team gathers for prayer and reflection before each game

celebrating the class of 2013 Graduation day for our Bishop Noll seniors and their families is always a busy day filled with many emotions. June 7th was no different this year as the day began with the Baccalaureate Mass held at the Cathedral of the Holy Angels. Graduates and guests were greeted with a warm June sunshine streaming through the beautiful stained glass windows of the cathedral. Several priests from the Diocese of Gary celebrated Mass with Bishop Dale Melczek. The graduates were praised by Bishop Melczek for staying true to their faith through their four years at Bishop Noll Institute. Beautiful liturgical music performed by students and faculty, accompanied by musicians from throughout the Diocese, made this a memorable moment, indeed. Later in the evening, the line to enter into the fieldhouse grew out into the parking lot in anticipation of the moment these proud families had been waiting for the past four years. The evening began with graduate Edward Rivera playing the national anthem on an electric guitar. More musical talent followed as Valedictorian
Tommy Abbott, after delivering inspiring words to his classmates, broke out his guitar and serenaded his classmates with a popular song. Salutatorian Doug Roach reminisced about his many happy memories of his four years at Bishop Noll. Inspiring words from, incoming BNI Chaplain, Fr. Kevin Scalf C.PP.S., as well as a surprise visit from former Dean of Students, Mike McGrone, made the evening a special one. Graduates and their families lingered after the ceremony for photos and final farewells. While the evening was joyful in so many ways, graduates said goodbye to each other with heavy hearts knowing that it could be quite some time before many of them would be together again. To our graduates—You will always have a place in the heart of Bishop Noll Institute! We wish you much success in all that you aspire to do. Don’t ever forget—you are forever Warriors!!

Bishop Noll Institute Earns NCA CASI Accreditation Principal Craig Stafford announced that Bishop Noll Institute earned accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), an accreditation division of AdvancED. This action was taken at the AdvancED Accreditation Commission meeting held on June 22, 2013. NCA CASI provides nationally-recognized accreditation, the purpose of which is continuous school improvement focused on increasing student performance. To earn accreditation, schools must meet NCA CASI’s high standards, be evaluated by a team of professionals from outside the school and implement a continuous process of school improvement. “Accreditation demonstrates to our students, parents and community that we are focused on raising student achievement, providing a safe and enriching learning environment, and maintaining an efficient and effective operation staffed by highly qualified educators,” stated Mr. Stafford. NCA CASI accreditation is recognized across state lines, which not only eases the transfer process as students move from accredited school to accredited school but also assures parents that the school is meeting nationally accepted standards for quality and successful professional practice. Dr. Mark Elgart, President/CEO of AdvancED, the parent organization of NCA CASI, stated, “NCA CASI Accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners. Bishop Noll Institute is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.”
NHS Students Volunteer at Area 7 Special Olympics A group of 19 NHS students helped the Area 7 Special Olympics Spring Games at Thornwood HS in South Holland, IL. This group of students did a fantastic job working the softball throw and encouraging the athletes! With their help, nearly 700 athletes were able to participate in the games. The BNI student volunteers had a great time at the games, and were inspired by this group of determined athletes. Many hope to return again next year. The Bishop Noll community is proud of these students and their volunteer work!
BNI Student Accomplishments Recognized in News and Academic Competitions Congratulations to several of our Bishop Noll students who had their academic work recognized in the media, as well as science competitions.
Seniors Jimmy Mullaney, Jose Arteaga and John Mitchell recently had guest commentaries printed in the Northwest Indiana Catholic newspaper. The three students were nominated and inspired by Theology teachers Mrs. Susan Bates and Mr. Barrett Laspesa. In his article (that was also published by the San Diego Catholic newspaper), Jimmy discussed the difficulty of teens keeping strong relationships with their faith while transitioning into adulthood. Jimmy’s topic Faith Can Guide Teens as They Approach Adulthood was chosen because he can relate this to his everyday life, and has experienced it first hand. John’s article, Modern Culture Puts its Priorities Ahead of God’s Plan” depicts how being a mom is put second to starting a career. John was inspired by Mr. Laspesa’s class discussion. Jose’s article, As We Await a New Pope, We Should Make Time for Prayer, was faith-inspired, and received positive feedback from his fellow parishioners at Saint John the Baptist. Freshman Jacob Herr earned a Silver Medal, a special award from the Hosak Company, and acknowledgement for his 4th year entering the Calumet Regional Science Fair. His entry in the science competition held in February at IU Northwest was Observing Ants' Reactions Towards Different Types of Sugars. Jacob was inspired by BNI Biology teacher, Mr. Todd Hutson. Finally, congratulations to the BNI Envirothon team on advancing to the state competition! The team competed at Regionals in La Porte, IN, where they attended lectures and were tested on five environmental topics: Aquatic Ecology, Rangeland Management, Forestry, Wildlife, and Soils. With being only one point shy of 1st place winners from Kankakee Valley, the boys took a proud 2nd place. The BNI team members, students from the AP Environmental Science and AP Biology classes are Anthony Repay, Douglas Roach, Danny Pobereyko, Brayden Banske, Will Kasprzycki, and Nick Anglin. Their coach is faculty member Mrs. Rosalie Schmidt. The state competition was held on April 30th in Washington, IN. The competition was comprised of three components: a formal presentation, a “hands-on” portion, and a written exam. Twenty teams competed at state, and BNI was the only team proudly representing the northwest Indiana area.

two golf outings help BNI put the fun in fundraising Annual Alumni and Friends Golf Invitational A beautiful summer day, a spectacular golf course, great friends, and the opportunity to help raise funds for a beloved institution…this is what brings our devoted alumni and friends back each year to our annual golf invitational. Held on July 22nd at Innsbrook Country Club in Merrillville, Indiana, the golf outing began with old friends catching up with each other over a buffet lunch, and then it was off to the links. This year, golfers had the opportunity to win a beautiful 2013 Volkswagen Beetle by scoring a hole in one. At dinner, Monsignor Joseph Semancik gave a blessing, and guests listened as Dr. Barbara O’Block gave an update on the many good things happening at Bishop Noll. A tempting raffle table and live auction helped close out another successful golf outing raising over $12,000 for Bishop Noll students. Mark your calendars for our 2014 golf invitational, July 21, 2014! 12

“Fine Are We of ’63” was a perfect motto for the 50-year celebration of the Class of 1963! This enthusiastic group of alums began planning their special weekend in January. Jeff Kristoff took on the enormous task of tracking down all 280 classmates. Eighty-six classmates, and a total of 125 guests overall attended the reunion. Wallene Swentko, Kathy Benko, Tim Mertz, Rich Schreiner, Bob Vellutini and Mary Beth Luksich took on the responsibility of planning a Friday night gathering at Cheers in Munster, a Saturday dinner at Briar Ridge Country Club, and a Sunday Mass and Brunch at St. Maria Goretti in Dyer, celebrated by classmate Fr. Charles Niblik. There was also room during the weekend for a round of golf, and a tour of Bishop Noll for a trip down memory lane! This fun filled weekend was enjoyed by all! Most heartwarming was the generous class gift to Bishop Noll Institute—one of the largest gifts from a class reunion in many years. Tim Mertz discovered that not many class reunions ever contribute a class gift. He believes that a class reunion is the perfect time to say thank you to Bishop Noll for providing a foundation for the future successes of each classmate. With a goal of $10,000, a total of $18,765 was gifted over the course of just a few short weeks. Since the reunion, additional gifts have raised total of this awesome class gift to $20,110! His next goal? Tim will be working with future class reunion committees—challenging them to exceed this amount, and support Bishop Noll by providing the vital funds that sustain the educational mission of inspiring academic achievement, building moral character, and nurturing spiritual growth.
Class gift chairman Tim Mertz presents a check for the Class of 1963 gift for $18,765 to Mary Ellen O’Neill, Director of Institutional Advancement; and Craig Stafford, Principal. Since the reunion, additional gifts have raised the total of this awesome class gift to $20,110!

When is the last time you wore your class ring? If you did locate it in the back of a drawer, would it still fit? These are the questions that Wallene Swentko asked fellow classmates as they were making plans for their 50-year reunion. Swentko was looking for a way to raise funds for the class gift, and something that would go along with the “gold” theme since it was their golden reunion. She came up with the idea of asking classmates to donate their class rings that they no longer wanted. She found a local jeweler (and fellow classmate) who would give a fair price for the rings, and the proceeds would go to Bishop Noll. To date, sixteen rings have been donated, totaling almost $1,700 in donations to the Bishop Noll Annual Fund! Do you have a class ring you would like to donate? Mail it or drop it off at the school. We will acknowledge your gift as a donation to our Annual Fund. Any questions please contact Mary Ellen O’Neill at moneill@bishopnoll.org.

Emporium 2013 a record setting year in support of our scholars The 32nd Annual Emporium at Bishop Noll Institute was a record-setting event! The school’s largest single day event was held on Friday, April 26, at Bishop Noll. With a committee of dedicated alumni and current parents, as well as the generosity of over 250 guests, the Emporium raised over $85,500 to support student scholarships at Bishop Noll! The Bishop Noll scholarship fund makes a Bishop Noll education a reality for many of our students. Guests enjoyed a light dinner buffet, cocktails and entertainment by DJ and television personality, Mark Nilsson. Throughout the evening, guests were able to bid on a variety of enticing items such as a week at a Wyndham Resort, an elegant dining experience in Napa Valley, a pub crawl to local taverns hosted by popular faculty member Larry Bentley, and the opportunity to have the 1953 Heisman Trophy belonging to Johnny Lattner in your home for a week! This year’s live scholarship auction honored the life and career of Dorothy LaMere. During her 20 years as an English and Literature teacher at Bishop Noll Institute, Dorothy had a tremendous influence on thousands of former students. Dorothy was known for her love of teaching, her passion for literature, and her kindness. A special scholarship has been named in her honor. Through the generosity of several guests, over $12,500 was raised to begin this scholarship. Mark your calendars for the 33rd Annual Emporium which will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014.
