Editor’s Note
S
ummer seemed to have lasted longer than expected, with many sunny weekends all the way through to the start of April. Sunny days meant perfect boating days - or simply just being out on the water. It is amazing how many people are using the Broadwater these days - sunny or not so sunny. The Easter weekend (and other weekends around that time) kept the waterways very busy - from Southport all the way up to Jumpinpin. I suppose it is good that more people are appreciating our waterways, but at the same time, it should increase our concerns for safety and the environment. It may be cliché, but it never really hurt anyone to be safe than sorry! And it is every person’s responsibility - not just our government’s. Speaking of responsibility, when the local paper featured complaints about the “bums” at Bum’s Bay, we thought it is timely that we have a contributor who actually lives on her boat around the Gold Coast. Sue Parry-Jones’ article gives a fresh look into the life that people live on board their boats. (P44) The government may need to rationalise the several aspects of the “problem”, as this matter is not a simple case of dura lex, sed lex (the law is harsh, but it is the law). It involves people’s lives and it is not to be taken lightly. For enthusiastic boat show goers, we have a few tips for you to consider before you head out to the shows in May. Our publisher Andy Kancachian, a regular at trade shows all over the world, gives helpful advice on what to do and what to expect in these massive boating events. (P9) It is quite a disappointment, though, not to see the upcoming Gold Coast boat shows highlighted in the tourism bodies’ list of events in their marketing program. There is much room to include boating and boating lifestyle offerings as a tourism product of the Gold Coast and should be seriously considered. To end this note on a happy tune, let me welcome a true blue Gold Coaster and a fishing and TV icon on board with us, Paul Burt. His debut story is an exciting glimpse into a whole new underwater world that will thrill the intrepid fishers: the Sea Mounts. (P17) And with that and much more, I leave you to enjoy the rest of this edition’s pages! Stay safe on our waters!

p.38 OUR BOAT SURVEY RESULTS
F
rom mid-February to mid-April, we conducted an anonymous online survey about people’s boating lifestyle. The main purpose for the survey was to get to know what boaties (and non-boaties too) were interested to read about when it comes to the boating lifestyle on the Gold Coast. Incidentally, we also gathered insights about how people differ in their circumstances and how these differences reflect in activities and places they choose when boating, and their preferences for topics to read. For instance, majority of those who had smaller boats go out fishing most often. Most of those who are in the 55-64 age range prefer going offshore and many have bigger boats for cruising up north such as the Whitsundays. The responses we gathered also proved how diverse boating can be on the Gold Coast. To view the questions and the full report with statistical analysis, visit boatgoldcoast.com.au/survey_results We are sharing here some of the comments made by the respondents. “Print is better - I see it, I read it - but I wouldn’t search for it online.” “Printed copy is a great free book.” “Printed: you can share, lend, give to friends, keep items, refer to.” “Printed copy better than staring at a computer screen. Computers are for work; printed mags are for leisure.” “There is no substitute for print.” “Digital version provides faster access, easy reference; printed mag’s better on kickback holiday reading.” “Accurate technical advice; and gives ideas on where to go.” “The magazine has notably improved, esp. the latest edition. It is on my desk in hard copy; easier to read in my spare time.” “Very happy so far.” “Great mag! Well done!” “It looks very professional.” “It’s unreal, it should go national!” “Article relevance rules. Ads don’t. But you need to pay for your writers/ contributors. Can you work for free and flick the ads?” Participate in the ongoing survey at boatgoldcoast.com.au/feedback_form Compiled by Michelle Simao and Roselle Tenefrancia boatgoldcoast.com. au

BOAT PHOTOGRAPHY
Amsterdam Canal Festival Photo and Text by Andy Kancachian
Amsterdam is a city of water and boating, nestled well below sea level. There is one hundred kilometres of canals, 90 islands and 1,500 bridges, where recreational and commercial boating have long been part of the city’s culture. 6
I love Amsterdam and enjoy spending the European summer riding around endlessly through the medieval center of the city with the concentric halfcircles of canals lined with old boats and barges, still being used for living the boating life. Historically, the canals were dug for water management, merchandise transport and defence. However, today the canals in Amsterdam are used as a main form of transportation around the city. This photo was taken at one of the most spectacular on-water boat parties I have ever attended: the 2008 Grachten festival. The annual event is held through August in the city on and around the UNESCO World Heritage canals. The Grachten festival boasts 150 beautifully staged concerts in diverse settings, such as gardens, rooftops, private homes, train stations, hotel rooms and floating pontoons. It is a 10-day festival showcasing the young musicians of the Netherlands.
On this day, we were rafted up in the Prinsengracht canal at the concert staged in front of the famous Pulitzer Hotel. The orchestra was positioned on a large floating pontoon, and the canals were filled, in both directions, with audiences listening from onboard an array of classic Dutch boats. The concert was free, so the walkways and bridges along the waterways were crammed with crowds, creating a backdrop of colours and movement, with classical and contemporary music bouncing off the narrow cobbled streets and alleys. This photo now hangs in my Gold Coast home as a constant reminder of what the Gold Coast waterways can be with some clever government thinking and a wider community that truly embraces the boating life. Our waterways have the potential to be the stage for events - local and international - that showcase a city of creative and innovative people. MAY - jul 2016

Kevlacat Series 2400
Ultimate Power Boat for Offshore Fishing self-draining deck and a handy deck wash, the cockpit has a bait station and cutting board on the transom, four rod holders mounted on the gunwale and another six on the hard top.” And if you want to fish up front, there is a non-skid walkaround with high rail. The standard setup offers a large kill tank to port and ice box and/or storage space to starboard. Wyld says, “Even more, it’s the thoughtful little things like a dedicated moulded recess for the EPIRB and fire extinguisher. The boat is fitted with Reelax seating and foot rests that make it so comfortable.”
F
o r serious sports fishermen, the 6.5-metre Kevlacat Offshore 2400 delivers a drier and softer ride. The strong but lightweight boat is trailerable. The large fuel capacity allows for long running time, ideal for overnight fishing adventures far offshore. Local Kevlacat dealer principal, Hayden Wyld of Wyld About Boats says, “The 2400 is the ultimate power boat for deep water fishing. The advanced design ensures a safe, comfortable ride in the most demanding sea conditions. It’s set up for serious fishing. I will take you fishing in the Kevlacat 2400 and you will instantly want one.” Wyld explains why his company is having great success selling this fishing-friendly catamaran. “We recently kitted up a 2400 Kevlacat Offshore and went game fishing with some interested buyers. We ventured way out offshore with these guys who are experienced blue water tournament game fishermen. The conditions were not kind, but the

Kevlacat made easy work of the harsh conditions and demonstrated astonishing stability.” Wyld explains the reason behind the boat’s impressive handling. “In these types of tough conditions, the catamaran hulls are far superior offshore than even larger mono-hulls. The high-sided dual hulls pierce through the waves, which buffers the impact and shield the crew from overspray by a five-piece windscreen and a solid hard top with roll-up clears. These hulls are bullet proof, made from Kevlar cloth and vinylester resins between layers of fibreglass, making them the ultimate power boat for fishing in deep water.” The Kevlacat 2400 is sold as a fishing layout. Wyld explains, “The 2.5-metre beam means a large cockpit space that allows plenty of space for 4-6 fishermen without getting in each other’s way. The fishing platform is uncluttered and everything can be hidden away. Built with
If one of the crew wants to take a nap, the lock-up cabin is huge and can easily fit two large men on cushioned bunks either side. There is a toilet under the port-side bunk and a central hatch for good ventilation. Wyld points out, “The Kevlacat 2400 allows for all required navigational aids and gauges for monitoring your location and the boat’s performance. When we go outside, this package offers a low fuel consumption at cruising speed of 32 knots.” The Kevlacat 2400 is a tried and proven vessel choice of the Volunteer Coast Guard and Volunteer Marine Rescue - proof that its performance and sea-keeping ability are superior to anything in its class. Wyld reminds, “Before you buy a boat like this, be sure to test how the boat performs in not-so-perfect conditions.” Wyld About Boats has a brand new demonstrator fitted with the new 150hp 4 stroke Mercury’s on display and ready for your sea trial. SHOW UP AT BOAT SHOWS TIPS TO NAVIGATING A BUYERS’ MARKET By Andy Kancachian
T
he key motto when attending a boat show is the same one used by the Boy Scouts: Be prepared. If you are planning on attending the Gold Coast boat shows in May or any other shows throughout Australia, then these tips will ensure you and your family will enjoy your days as you take advantage of the buyers’ market.
FAMILY GAME PLAN On the way to the shows,
EARLY START, LONG DAY Be standing in line when the gates open so you give yourself plenty of hours without being pressed for time. As you gain knowledge throughout the day, you will be walking back and forth from stand to stand comparing brands and models and asking those same hard questions of each dealership. Use a camera to remind you of unique features that can be easily shown to competing sales staff. These photos will also assist in keeping your family members updated in case they missed something during the decision process.
MIX UP FAMILY TIME While dad might find the boat show very close to a heavenly experience, mum and the kids might not be so thrilled about hours and hours of boat-hunting. So alternate your time between shopping for your next boat upgrade and having some fun activities as a family—whether it is watching an on-water show, riding on a train and ferry, or simply stopping for a refreshment break. For sure, every dad wants the wife and kids to enjoy the demonstrations, lectures and salesperson chatter as much as he does; but the key is moderation and variety. A boat show can be a great place for the family to invigorate a love for boating which involves many new life experiences and firsttime activities. Let your children keep an eye out for the freebies!
MIND YOUR SHOES With many kilometres of boats on display, you really need to wear comfortable shoes. Constant walking will make your feet expand, so soft comfortable walking shoes will ensure you avoid blisters and sores. Many dealerships will ask you to remove your shoes before boarding the vessels so your shoes need to be easily removable and quick to slip back on. PREPARE THE KIDS Boat shows are a lot of fun for children but arriving unprepared could be stressful for the parent. Make sure you suggest to your family to use the bathroom before leaving for the boat show and have a big breakfast at home before you set off. Bring with you fresh fruit, juices, snacks and plenty of water. Remember to take sunscreen, a stroller (if required, as this will be handy for the long walks), sunglasses, and make sure everyone is wearing a sun hat. The weather can be fickle, so be prepared for cold weather or rains too. Have enough cash ready to avoid waiting at an ATM in case there are no credit card or EFTPOS facilities.
boatgoldcoast.com. au
have a talk to the kids about the need to stay together and look out for one another. The adults should plan to take it in turns keeping an eye on the kids while the other looks around. If you are all going your separate ways, have a designated meeting spot and time.
KNOW YOUR PRICES If you are aware of the street price of the boat you want, then a boat show is your chance to get a great ‘show special’ price. Many manufacturers, dealers and brokers have senior management, key international executives and business owners at their display stands during the show. So you can negotiate directly with the decision makers who can immediately improve their offerings to ensure you buy on the day. Be sure to discuss potential rebates, extended warranties, express delivery dates, and expert training. It is advisable not to sign anything until you are absolutely sure, and do not mix alcohol and boat-buying so that you have a clear mind when make your buying decision. Remember that there are ongoing boat ownership costs such as storage, maintenance, slipping, fuel, and mooring fees—oh, and a champagne budget!
PRIOR RESEARCH Most boat shows will have a list of exhibitors and a floor plan on the official website. Take the time to study the possibilities. Make lists of the activities (and times) of the demonstrations you would really like to see. Pinpoint the boat brands that you also want to visit. If you are serious about buying you can pre-arrange a guided tour or to discuss your enquiries with a technical expert. The boating industry offers a very wide variety of vessels in an array of lengths and styles. Knowing what you want before you arrive at a boat show will ensure you have the maximum available time for brand comparisons so that you can make an informed buying decision. Aspects to consider are your budget, frequency of use, where you will go boating, what type of boating it will be used for, and who will be on board. MAKE FRIENDS It is always better to buy local because you will need your local dealer’s support for warranty issues, regular servicing and ongoing maintenance. Having a good relationship with your boat dealer is important, so meet the teams, and ask to speak with the service manager who will become your point of contact after you have purchased your vessel. Many dealerships have their own niche areas of expertise so make sure your boat dealer is experienced in supplying and maintaining the boat brand and model you choose. BE READY You should be armed with a pen and notebook, and plenty of business cards if you have them, so that you can enter the numerous dealer competitions. These days a phone can be your camera and good for taking notes, and even scanning QR codes or surfing the internet to check on price or details. BE INSPIRED Finally, be prepared to be inspired! A serious boat buyer should attend as many boat shows as possible before making a decision. Your aim is to narrow down your choices to make a well-informed decision about your new boat. Boat shows are your best opportunities to make brand and model comparisons, knowing that a well-informed buyer is less likely to buy on impulse or make the wrong decision.

BOAT GOLD COAST
THE BENEFITS
DRYBOAT M
a rinas have traditionally been associated with docks and ropes. However in recent years dry boat storage (or drystack) has grown in popularity in the Australian market, particularly for those with small to medium sized boats. Why? Dry boat storage presents a more affordable, low-maintenance alternative to leaving your boat exposed to the harsh Queensland elements. Your boat is instead stored securely in a covered facility on a boat rack. A simple phone call to the marina before you leave home and your boat will be sitting in the water alongside a pontoon waiting for you and the family when you get there. You don’t even get your feet wet. It’s a great service many boaties are taking advantage of. It might seem a little ironic to keep a boat out of the water, but the reality is the advantages of dry stack far outweigh the disadvantages: 1) Convenience Keeping your boat in dry stack saves you an enormous amount of time compared to towing your boat to and from a ramp. You also save all the money that would have otherwise been spent on a trailer, fuel, and the need for a heavy duty towing vehicle. Swing moorings might suit certain boat owners, but they create obvious access challenges, and the fact that they remain unsupervised for extended periods of time is cause for concern. 2) Less maintenance and chance of deterioration or damage Storing your boat high and dry keeps it protected from harsh weather conditions – there is no need for regular cleaning, detailing and antifouling. You also avoid deterioration caused by ultraviolet rays, dust, mould, and the ever present threat of the seagulls marking their territory! Consequently, preserving your boat in dry storage will ensure the value of your boat remains higher for a much longer period of time. 3) Overall costs of boat ownership are reduced significantly As touched on above, dry storage eliminates the need for expensive maintenance like annual antifouling,
as your hull is not exposed to conditions that cause corrosion and growth. 4) Security Guarantee Theft or vandalism of your boat becomes just about impossible once it’s up off the ground. Just about every dry storage facility in Australia is monitored by round-the-clock surveillance, giving you peace of mind that your boat is always safe. 5) Better for the environment The dry storage method is not only a better use of space, but moving more boats out of the water means less oil, fuel and sewage leaking into our waterways, and it reduces the impact of toxins from anti-fouling paints. Gold Coast City Marina at Coomera offers a stateof-the-art secure storage facilty for up to 250 boats, to a length of nine metres or 12 tonnes in weight. Completely undercover, it’s one of the most modern facilities in the southern hemisphere and includes the world’s latest development in marine forklift trucks that quickly and safely lift the vessels in an out of the water. For those of you with larger vessels, including boats with flybridges, external dry storage racks are also available for boats of up to 37ft in a safe and secure area. All you need to do is bring the picnic lunch (or order a picnic lunch to go from the on-site restaurant Quarterdeck Kitchen & Bar), step aboard, cast off and if you need fuel there are diesel and unleaded fuel bowsers on the way out of the marina. There’s even a customer lounge with toilets and showers where you can wait for friends or family. And when you return you just tie the boat up to the pontoon and the marina crew will do the rest, or if you want to wash the boat down yourself they will put it on a wash down cradle and when it’s dry it will be put back in its storage rack. This fantastic service allows you to enjoy a lot more boating and a lot less hassle, which is what the team at GCCM are all about.

SANCTURY COVE INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW On Course for Spectacular 28th Show
T
h e Southern Hemisphere’s largest celebration of boating and marine innovations returns to the Gold Coast in May, with the 28th edition of the annual Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) on course for a truly spectacular showcase. Each year, the internationally acclaimed show attracts close to 40,000 boating enthusiasts from around the world to revel in the four-day event’s thriving festival atmosphere, held from May 19 to 22, 2016. As the first event on the Australian boating calendar each year, SCIBS is regarded as the place “where the marine business does business” – bringing industry leaders and dealers together in one spectacular exhibition, representing everything from luxury vessels to trailer boats, and offering an unrivalled showcase of the latest and greatest makes, models and products. Injecting up to $150 million into the local economy each year, the annual Show had become an all-round marine-themed lifestyle event that appeals to the likes of all – from those seeking leisure and recreational style products, through to serious boating enthusiasts, SCIBS general manager Johan Hasser said. “Whether you’re in the market for a jetski, stand up paddleboard, chartering a boat for your next family vacation or looking to buy a yacht, SCIBS really is the ideal place to experience every facet of the boating and luxury lifestyle,” Mr Hasser said. “Show-goers can expect displays from up to 300 longterm and new exhibitors, boasting hundreds of boats and thousands more marine products. “To enhance our visitor experience we have added a number of new attractions, including dedicated product precincts and special-themed events – alongside our all-day family-friendly entertainment and popular program highlights.” A collation of the world’s most renowned brands in the boating, leisure and luxury lifestyle industries will launch new products and display their offerings at this year’s Show, with Whitehaven, Maritimo, Monte Carlo, Elandra, Palm Beach, Integrity, Alaska and Horizon, in the long list of high-calibre exhibitors in attendance. boatgoldcoast.com. au
The event will also showcase the largest and most significant multihull display seen in Queensland, with catamaran exhibitors, including Multihull Solutions, Multihull Central, Leopard, Marine Engineering Consultants (MEC), Horizon, Lightwave, Bavaria (Nautitech) and The Windcraft Group, increasing their on-water presence. Reflecting a commitment to evolve, SCIBS 2016 has unveiled new precincts to its revised Show layout including ‘The Boatyard’ and ‘Supercar Street’ – allowing visitors to experience for the first time ‘shows within the show’. Located close to the iconic waterfront George’s Paragon restaurant and adjacent to C Pier, The Boatyard offers over 2,000sqm of prime display space for fishing and leisure boat exhibitors to showcase their latest makes and models. Featuring leading distributors such as Northside Marine, Game and Leisure Boats, Queensland Marine Centre (QMC) and Fishing and Leisure Boats. Also a new addition to SCIBS 2016, Supercar Street will bring the best luxury brands from all over the world together for a covetable display of sports, convertible, luxury, prestige vehicles and supercars all in one red-hot location. It is dubbed the “biggest aggregation of luxury cars in Australia” by the Show’s organisers. Among notable changes, The Superyacht & Marine Pavilion has relocated alongside the Main Pavilion, encouraging foot traffic through an engaging display of Australian-made products, global service providers and the latest gear and gadgets: navigational equipment, propellers, pontoons, interior items and marinas offering berths for lease or sale. For those interested in active water sports, SCIBS will showcase a gamut of recreational water sports gear and boating, from the latest stand up paddleboards (SUPs) and kayaks to full-throttle personal water crafts (PWCs). Among major PWC exhibitors on display throughout The Marine Village, will be Gold Coast WaveRunners, JSW Powersports and Jet Ski World, alongside industry-leading gear and diving aid brands.
Adding to the Show’s jam-packed four-day calendar, SCIBS 2016 will see the return of popular program highlights including the exclusive Top Deck VIP Lounge, the International Business Lounge, on-water demonstrations and the Women on Water (WOW) program – set to feature a range of nautical themed workshops along with its annual ticketed event, High Tea on the High Seas Cruises. This year, two cruises are available – held on Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 – offering two-anda-half hours of luxury cruising, complimentary bubbles, high tea delicacies, pampering sessions, entertainment, exclusive prizes and more. In addition to program highlights, SCIBS will offer an array of entertainment for the whole family with live music, on stage exhibitions, demonstrations, celebrity appearances and special kids zones, while SCIBS official ambassador Paul Burt is set to launch an all-new fishing tournament titled the 2016 SCIBS Live Bream Shoot Out. The Shoot Out will be a family-friendly, winner takes all contest, held over the Saturday and Sunday, from May 21 to 22 – bringing another fresh element to an already diverse program of events at this year’s Show. A trade and consumer show endorsed by Tourism & Events Queensland, SCIBS is a member of the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO). BOAT GOLD COAST
The Boat Works’ added
muscle for all
marine service
h e Boat Works on the Gold Coast has T completed a three-year development program and $20 million investment in its 23-acre site. The major additions to equipment and facilities enhance its offering to boaties, whether owners of trailerable craft or yachts up to 110 feet (33.5 metres). The Boat Works is located at the gateway to the only purpose-built Marine Precinct in Australia, offering clear access to the Broadwater and Seaway. This has proven a compelling reason for southern yachties making the migration north to The Whitsundays to stop and attend to their boats’ repairs and maintenance while enjoying a few days R&R in Australia’s perennial holiday destination. The team at The Boat Works can confidently say it is home to the largest concentration of marine trades in Australia, with more than 40 individual businesses on-site, each operating independently to guarantee clients competitive quotes and transparent pricing. Owners and Captains can deal direct with companies for jobs big or small, from anti-fouling to complete refits, or assign a project manager to handle the entire project.
In 2015, The Boat Works welcomed a 100-tonne marine travel lift which carries boats up to 110 feet with a beam of 26 feet. Known as “Harry”, it joins the yard’s 70-tonne travel lift, “Sid“, and a unique 45-tonne hydraulic submersible sealift, ideal for wide-beam catamarans.
Recently, The Boat Works was the choice for the Melbourne owner of an 87-foot Warren Yacht, returning to Melbourne from a season in The Whitsundays. The Boat Works’ 15-metre high refit shed was ideal for the complete repaint job, which proved a significant saving to the owner.
Custom-designed and built superfenders ensure every boat is buffered and hauled with The Boat Works’ trademark treatment, just as owners would expect.
An 86-foot Feadship from Sydney, another yacht returning from a sunny sojourn in The Whitsundays, stopped in for the works, including a hull extension and addition of a high-tech hydraulic swim platform.
Adding to its complement of 30 refit sheds are four new Prestige Supersheds that are 15-metres in height and can accommodate boats up to 36.5 metres (110 feet). There is also a new undercover hardstand area, offering true all-weather work environments. Then there’s a dedicated hardstand storage facility for vessels up to 110 feet, and a new showroom which will soon welcome retail tenants attracted by the high visibility of its prime street-front position. The new travel lift and sheds have already proven a boon, as word spreads of The Boat Works’ costeffective, convenient and five-star service.
Seven days a week, high-calibre marine businesses are accessible, whether for routine maintenance or a hull-up overhaul. These businesses all share a “can do” attitude and are experts in sandblasting, upholstery and stainless steel, shipwrights, mechanical and electrical engineers, surveyors, watermakers and desalination equipment, electronics and refrigeration, signage and graphics, project managers and boat brokers. Most importantly, The Boat Works has the space and the all-weather, climate controlled working environment to ensure boats are protected and work runs to schedule, whatever the weather. boatgoldcoast.com. au
The 60-foot Nautor’s Swan Kings Legend booked in to The Boat Works for thorough preparation on its sails, hulls and nav gear prior to the 2015 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. The team at the Boat Works, led by owner, Tony Longhurst, and General Manager, Shane Subichin, is proud of its reputation for being professional, friendly, highly skilled and committed to going that “extra mile” in every aspect. Clients appreciate the array of complimentary services such as courtesy car, barbeque facilities, laundry, ensuites and a free coffee while you wait at the waterfront dining venue The Galley Restaurant and Café that attracts locals, tenants and visitors. With pleasant views out over the marina to the river, The Galley is renowned for its sunset socialising and quality menu. Next on the agenda for The Boat Works is the official unveiling of the new Extreme 40 with its first foray onto the sailing circuit. Turning heads in vivid orange, this ex-racing cat will be used as a high-profile promotional tool for clients, sponsors and VIP guests to experience the adrenaline rush of on-water racing on this stateof-the-art multihull.

BOAT ANGLER
The Final
Frontier Fishing the sea mountains with Paul Burt
After working the current out, Tomo motored the boat up about a kilometre north of the slide. It was time to drop the lines. The weight I used was a simple SPC fruit tin full of lead, weighing about five kilos. The three-metre paternoster rig consisted of three droppers all containing fluorescent tubing and beads, a large tuna circle hook with either a slab of mullet or squid attached to it, and a couple of decent-sized ball bearing swivels to help eliminate line twists. A strobe light - emitting more flashes than a rave party at 2am - was also attached to the top of the rig. The more light down there, the better the chance of a fish locating your bait.
T
en miles, twenty miles, thirty miles...Was this trip ever going to end and when were we going to get there? Finally the engine revs are drawn back and the diesel fumes rise from the back deck as the GPS alarm signals our arrival. Tomo yells from the top deck, “We’re here! Now we’ve just got to find the fish and the depths nearly three thousand feet!” The Gold Coast is known for its diversity, not only for its beaches and waterways, culture and lifestyle - but also for angling. We have just about everything for the angler right here on our back doorstep, from fishing the freshwater impoundments in the hinterland for Australian bass, to wetting a line in the scenic waterways of the Broadwater for a flathead or bream. Out at sea, the reefs east of Surfers Paradise are made up of broken rubbly rocks, pinnacles, ledges, sand and gravel. For some intrepid adventurers like myself, new grounds had to be found. For many years, hushed words were spoken throughout the fishing fraternity of massive mountains and cliffs rising from the bottom of the ocean in depths of nearly a kilometre. Stories were told of yellowfin tuna the size of a Mini Cooper, leisurely jumping out of the water and marlin feeding among the baitfish schooling up on the surface. Over the next few years, more and more were learned
boatgoldcoast.com. au
from these anglers - until one day a few fishermen decided to drop a line down. Now known as the Sea Mounts, these massive underwater structures have become the talk of the tackle trade, with local tackle shops gearing up with imported electric reels capable of handling extreme pressure and drag load. Custom-built rods once used for marlin fishing have been converted into bottom fishing outfits, as the reels are mounted and strapped to the winch seat. When fishing these depths, a lot of line is required. With the constant advances of braided or non-stretch fishing lines, anglers can easily spool their reels up with three thousand feet of two hundred-pound braid. This kind of fishing does get quite expensive! There is another way out of it, but you have to be fit. The Alvey Reef King is a huge deck winch that easily takes the line capacity. With the use of two handles around the spool, a lot of line can be retrieved with a few turns. And back to our story… Tomo yells from the top deck again, “I think we’re on it now! Come and have a look at this!” We raced up the stairs, and stared at the sounder as it showed a rise from the bottom, similar to that of Springbrook. A massive edge littered with red blotches indicated fish were down there. And they were thick!
Several minutes passed and my line was finally at the bottom. The fish wasted no time as the line went tight and I could feel the pressure increasing through my gloves, as more fish were being hooked up. With five kilos of lead, I knew it was going to take some time to get the fish back to the surface. Fifteen minutes had passed, and no sign of any fish. A few minutes later, my line went slack. The worst fear entered my mind - sharks! Suddenly, about a hundred metres out the back, the fish surfaced all bloated from the change in pressure - the reason for my line going slack, as they torpedoed the last 100 metres to the surface. We quickly reversed the boat back to the fish, and boated a large bass groper and a blue eye trevalla. Tired, sweaty and exhausted are the three main symptoms you endure while fishing these waters. These grounds are extremely delicate and it wouldn’t take long to decimate them. So when you’re talking about twenty to thirty kilos of prime fish fillets sitting on ice in the esky, a couple of fish is more than enough. Fishing this depth of water is an unusual experience, and one that is easily topped off with the addition of a few fish. Weather obviously plays a major role out here and should only be visited by experienced skippers who have knowledge of the area. Could the Sea Mounts be the final frontier for reef fishing off the coast? That question has yet to be answered.

Many Sea Pen clients are surprised and delighted to learn they are supporting a local manufacturing business. The Sea Pen is very easy to use and many clients echo the sentiments of Kay from Mermaid Waters when she says,“The Sea Pen has been my/our saviour, from a boating relationship perspective as well as from the sheer ease of leaving the pontoon and returning to the pontoon in a very safe manner. I no longer need to hang off the side of the boat waiting to jump off to secure the boat with fenders and ropes.” No more frustration for Kay and her husband.
Local company Dockpro have become one of the success stories of the Gold Coast marine industry with its Sea Pen and FloatBricks product lines. The Gold Coast is the ‘home of Sea Pen’ and the first production Sea Pens went on display at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS) in 2004, with the first sales going to local Gold Coast people. Although there have been many improvements along the way, the early-model Sea Pens are still in operation today, over 11 years later.

FISH NG
FANATICS
Photos by Gold Coast Fishing Fanatics Facebook page
Social media has revolutionised fishing on the Gold Coast. With recreational fishers having a virtual social meeting place, it has created a culture of fishing fanatics. Boat Gold Coast had a chat with PETER KER, the creator of the Facebook community Gold Coast Fishing Fanatics, and learned about a social media phenomenon. How did the Facebook community of the Gold Coast Fishing Fanatics come about? Gold Coast Fishing Fanatics (GCFF) was founded in May 2013 out of a desire to meet like-minded locals and to share our fishing experiences and knowledge together. Who are the Gold Coast fishing fanatics? GCFF is a fishing community meeting place on Facebook of close to 11,500 people who are passionate about recreational fishing. Members share their experiences, send in photos of their catch, and learn tips on how to improve your catch. What is the significance of the GCFF in the general Gold Coast fishing community? GCFF has become a valued part of the general GC fishing community because it is a place where locals can come, see what’s biting and where, maybe pick up some tips along the way, or meet a new friend with similar interests in a friendly environment, and even brag about their catch and get together for a fish. Why do you think this community has become very popular? The success of the community is attributed to a few factors. I have worked hard the last couple of years to promote my page to everyone who loves fishing and weed out any unsavoury behaviour to make it a welcoming place, unlike other local pages that target particular socio-economic groups. boatgoldcoast.com. au
What are the top three fish that the GCFF members get excited about? We get excited about mangrove jack. Recently, barramundi have been regularly appearingand the whole community is buzzing. Thirdly, the big Jew fish. What are your community’s top three most popular fishing sites? Top 3 fishing sites are: Sand Pumping Jetty at The Spit, the underwater pipe from the mainland to South Stradbroke, and Runaway Bay Canals. How do you regulate the authenticity of the catches captured in photos and posted on your Facebook page? It is hard to regulate the authenticity or validity of the catches captured in photos and posted on my community page. However, most photos sent in have obvious landmarks in them. We mainly rely on people’s honesty. Would you say the Gold Coast is a great fishing destination? Gold Coast is a fishing mecca offering hundreds of kilometres of productive waterways with both fresh and saltwater options. There are also many land-locked small lakes that offer great sports fishing. Considering the great fishing, weather and environment we have to offer fishermen here on the GC, it’s an easy sell! There is room for expansion in the fishing industry here on the GC especially if it is promoted properly overseas. How has GCFF benefitted the general fishing community on the Gold Coast? Our community has benefitted the general fishing community by bringing awareness to people’s fishing-related businesses. We also promote responsible fishing that lessens impact on the environment, including catch-and-release fishing. This in turn spreads to a wider community in the hope of lessening the impact recreational fishos have here on the Coast. Our community has evolved in the wider Gold Coast community who don’t fish. For example, news of our page reached England and we did shark fishing filming for Sky UK with Freddie Flintoff and Rob Penn as part of a series. Further, I have liaised with the Gold Coast City Council. Council and I started a
After an intense fight trying to reel in the fish, Steele Petrovic and Stewart Macrae couldn’t believe their eyes when they landed a big Gold Coast Barramundi on Stewart Macrae”s Soft Plastic. After a quick photo snap the fish was quickly released. pest fish competition with lots of prizes in late March this year. Council provide staff and other resources to help me run the event to make sure it’s a community success. How has the GCFF page benefitted you personally? This community has cost me an undisclosed amount of money with no expectations of any monetary reward. Despite this, it has benefitted me in other ways by meeting people I learnd so much about fishing which has made me a much better fisherman. More than that, I have made many good friends. What is your position on bull sharks? Bull sharks are to be respected not killed. Respect the shark for the role it plays in the ecosystem. More studies need to be done to understand the bull shark behaviour and numbers before coming to a conclusion on how dangerous they are here on the GC. Do you provide information or feedback to the DAFF through their Fish Monitoring Program? From time to time we give information on tagging and participate in other DAFF programs and encourage others to do the same. 19

FREEZE DRIED BAIT
“It Bonks, It Scoops, It Cuts and Sharpens.” KOMBO Fishing Tool is a first 4-in-1 fishing multi-tool for fishing. Reduceing the amount of gear you’re packing, this multi-tool works as a fish “bonker”, a scooper, and a sharpener, and hides a high-quality stainless steel filet knife inside its plastic body, using a patentpending locking mechanism to keep it from sliding out accidentally. The all-in-one easy-to-use tool also floats! Keeps your tackle box clutter-free. Made from a high grade plastic. Has a chef’s quality, stainless steel filet knife. High visibility, tough construction! ($55) www.gearzone.com.au
The name says it all. Packed in heavy-duty UV-proof bags, and with nitrogen flushing, the bait remains perfectly preserved for more than three years. When it’s time to fish, simply rehydrate the bait in fresh or salt water. This will happen in around six minutes (or as long as it takes to rig a rod) in the zip-lock packaging pouch, resulting in a bait with a desirable and slightly rubbery texture. No need to keep bait refrigerated or frozen; eskies and freezers are free for essentials. It lasts infinitely longer than fresh bait, three-plus years! Store it anywhere, throw a bag in the glovebox, briefcase or backpack or leave it on your boat. It is light-weight, approximately 70% lighter than fresh bait, let alone a frozen block. This is by far the cleanest alternative with less mess and smell, and fish absolutely! love it. Available in whole baby squid and squid pieces at BCF, Anaconda, Whitworths and motackle.com.au. We love it! www.freezedriedbait.com

South American pro anglers just slipped their best kept secret. And ever since we keep being smashed cast after cast. The original twitch bait “Biruta” and Soft “Laguninha” Prawns are now available in a great variety of sizes and exclusive colours with great stats on the semi translucents. Though weighted, these handcrafted Biruta twitch baits float (and rattle) as they are hollow but sink as you start twitching walking the dog with them due to their clever shape and the weight under the head section making them ideal for rock and reef. The moment you think you are about to get snagged, the release tension and it will float avoiding snags and costly losses. The Laguninha are just as effective, and come in a variety of sizes and colours and are just a little tougher than the rest resulting in a longer lifespan affording you that big one as opposed to rebaiting and calming the frenzy. Snapper season is going to be epic this year! Contact Eduardo Henze down in Tweed to get in on it. They really work. morodecontoaustralia.com.au
With an anchor for every size vessel - from kayaks, PWC’s, tinnies, tenders or inflatables all up to 6.5 m in length, Cooper Anchors convincingly takes the prize every time, as they are smaller, lighter and more affordable. Inflicting less damage to both your craft and the reef than any of its counterparts, they are made from nylon which will therefore also not rust, rot or corrode. By no means a feather paper weight either, these anchors bury themselves effortlessly in the sea bed and stay there even through wind and tide changes. The small area between the shank and the tip allow Cooper Anchors to change direction with less effort, especially during anchor retrieval. As the boat is pulled forward, over and above the anchor, the anchor rotates with the vertical pull and is easily retrieved. These blokes (the Coopers from Hervey Bay) have made dropping anchor (and more so retrieving it) an absolute pleasure. Check them out at cooperanchors.com.au

Paradise Point Sailing Club By John Murphy, President, PPSC
P
aradise Point Sailing Club began operations in November 2008. The Club’s main goals are to introduce children, youth, families, adults, and community groups and associations to not only learn or compete in the sport of sailing but
to also promote community spirit, interaction in both children and adults, offer pathways to future sporting goals, team spirit, and generally supporting our local community.
vessels, allowing the Club to firstly offer even better safety but also—through our large fleet—the chance for even more children and adults to sample and become part of the sport.
PROGRAMS. The sailing program includes Junior Learners, Junior Advanced Learners, Junior Training /Coaching Junior Club Racing, and Junior State and National Event racing. We also teach both school and community groups, and we cater for other not-for-profit associations who may want the sailing experience. Adult’s learn-to-sail, sail-training, sailing-coaching and racing are also available at the Club. Our junior sailors start at the age of five and our oldest sailors are well into their 60s.
Our challenges have included damaged access pontoon within the first twelve months, faulty training boats that had to be replaced after 18 months, not enough safety boats as participant numbers increased, and not enough general sailing boats to offer more youth and adults the chance to try sailing or improve their sailing skills. We initially had the inability to promote the Club due to early financial restrictions, so we relied on word-of-mouth as our advertising medium.
MY ROLE I am both president and also sailing manager. The president’s role is to promote the Club’s activities, liaise with relevant sailing bodies, organise Club events such as regattas, fundraising events, work with government departments, such as the Gold Coast City Council regarding applications, and keep up-to-date with relevant rules and regulations that govern sailing.

AS SAILING MANAGER, I design and organise all Club sailing activities, which include all junior sailing and all adult sailing, and associated water activities. I also write all necessary sailing programs and safety protocols, and teach volunteers proper rescue procedures and emergency response protocols, train new boat drivers and shore control volunteers, and oversee all on-water and on-land activities regarding participants’ health and safety. CLUB’S FUTURE AND CHALLENGES
Paradise Point Sailing Club, since its small opening in 2008, has grown from five sailing boats and one rescue boat, to 35 sailing boats and three rescue

has a generally mild climate, great waterways and ample viewing places scattered all along the shores. These features are beneficial factors for the spectators of the sport. Where safety is the catch-phrase, this safety is much more controllable with regard to general distances to a safe shore, and excellent views for both on-water and onland safety personnel. Finally, our position on the Broadwater can offer parents the opportunity to watch their children sail within 80 metres of the shore and Club facilities.
PROMOTION OF SAILING. Sailing is a sport for life. It promotes not only a healthy mind and a healthy body, but also promotes friendship, harmony, and group and individual support through being part of a sailing fraternity. Although the Club has no famous sailors either nationally or internationally, it is part of our overall goal to support any of our youth and seniors in their endeavours if they wish to follow the national or international sailing circuit.

GPS NAVIGATION Navigation rallies today are run with the aid of GPS technology. Boats are much more accurate with their navigation and scores are considerably lower than when using traditional navigation. The skipper will enter his given latitude and longitude coordinates into the route system in the GPS. During the event, he follows the course on the screen.

For both traditional and GPS navigation, skippers need to create a run sheet telling them at what time they should arrive at each checkpoint. This can be done using simple mathematics or nowadays, using computer programs to assist. The aims of a predicted navigation rally are:
NAVIGATIONAL RALLIES How to use your boat and have fun on the water By Graham Webb, Vice Commodore Power, Southport Yacht Club
N
avigation rallies are boating activities that get little publicity, but have a dedicated following at the clubs that run them around the world. Previously known as “Predicted Log Racing, it is a sport run regularly by yacht and boating clubs. Navigation rallies are just like car rallies but held on the water. The purpose of a navigation rally is to test the navigation skills and boat control of a boat owner. Navigation rallies are a sport that all the family can enjoy. A minimum of two people are needed on each boat. In the past, the sport was male-dominated. This has changed over the years. Now, there are many husband-and-wife teams, or parents and children, and even grandchildren participating in these rallies. HOW THEY WORK The respective club will set a course over approximately 10 to 12 nautical miles, and give the boat skippers a time that they will start the event. The skippers need to nominate a speed over the ground that they feel they can manage in their boat over the course. The course instructions as issued will have a number of waypoints to aid the skippers with navigation through the event, as well as a map of the course. The waypoints will be indicated as latitude and longitude coordinates, and will include the distance between each waypoint. Scoring is done with the use of the satellites.
boatgoldcoast.com. au
Generally, each course will have 10 secret checkpoints that are set by the course setter. Each boat is issued with a GPS unit known as a Tack Tracker. This unit will pick up the time the boat goes through each secret checkpoint along the course; the ultimate result is how few seconds you can be either early or late at each checkpoint. Most clubs will have a handicap system giving newcomers a helping hand for a chance to get started and share in the prizes. All types of boats compete in navigation rallies - from 5-meter speed boats, pontoon boats, catamarans, sailing boats, to 70-foot cruisers - generally at speeds from 5 to 20 knots. TRADITIONAL NAVIGATION In the past, navigation rallies were run using the traditional navigation method. The skippers would plot their course on paper maps and create timing points along the course, and use their compasses for direction, and the rev counter of the engine to judge the speed. To assist in being on time, they would set their course to be abeam various obstacles at a given time using marker buoys, signs on the shore, tips of islands, entrance to creeks, and so on. Traditional navigation was never as accurate as the GPS navigation we use today. However, some clubs still conduct traditional navigation rallies.
a) To provide an on-the-water competitive activity for powerboat owners; b) To help promote safe boating and respect for other users of the waterways; c) To provide boat owners with a more intimate knowledge of the local waterways; d) To help boat owners become familiar with navigation instruments onboard their vessels; e) To provide an opportunity for members of clubs to get to know each other. Although navigation rallies are competitive, most emphasis is placed on enjoyment, and the social aspects as well as good sportsmanship. And, of course, safety prevails at all times.

There are many boating and yacht clubs in Australia that run navigation rallies. In Southeast Queensland, the Southport Yacht Club (SYC) Power Boat Division runs a full club championship each year, holding 10 events on the Gold Coast Broadwater and southern Moreton Bay. Interested parties can contact SYC and all the assistance they need will be given to get them started. Membership is essential, but a trial experience can be arranged at no cost. Measures from the outside, Nothing on the Inside
Fresh water, Grey water, Black water/sewage, Fuel and oil.
Gobius Tank Monitor Systems have the unique ability to measure levels from the outside of the tank without penetrating the tank in any way. This Patented technology is suited for any liquid and most tanks. The problem with existing level indicators is they need to be inside the tank. This can lead to constant cleaning, contamination and false readings particularly with blackwater tanks. This has been a constant burden in the past for other level indicators, but things have changed. The knock and listen technology behind this product will never need cleaning and will always read true. No longer would you need to guess if your level indicator is reading correctly, clogged or has failed completely.
Can be installed on Polypropylene, Polyethylene, Fibreglass, Aluminium, Steel and Stainless Steel. DIY - Installed and ready to use in 30 minutes No drilling into the tank, perfect for aftermarket Ideal for black water, grey water and fuel tanks that you can install yourself Industrial Gobius is available, turning pumps on and off when full or empty is reached All Gobius products work on 12 or 24 Volts. If Chaparral is not already a household name in Australia then it should be.
have embraced the concept of an entry level priced bowrider with premium DNA, especially considering the Chaparral ‘saltwater tough’ ethos suits the Aussie boating environment so well. A ten-minute test drive will show you why.”
C
elebrating their 51st year, Chaparral has developed a solid reputation worldwide for quality, innovation and performance; which is probably why they now hold market share in the tough U.S. sports boat market from 18 to 35 feet, and also hold the title as being the most awarded brand for innovation and customer satisfaction. They rank highly worldwide as well, with awards and market share in the U.K, Spain, Italy and even Russia. In Australia, Chaparral has enjoyed a steady rise to become the brand of choice for thousands of boaties and this is because they unashamedly built boats for saltwater use - something that we Aussies deem to be particularly important. When you look into it, the difference between a standard ‘fresh water’ build and the Chaparral ‘saltwater’ build is surprising. Everything from the hull shape through to the type of wiring, drainage, grade of stainless steel, gelcoats, trim materials, carpet thickness, hardware quality - literally everything is of a higher grade and therefore, more suited to tough saltwater conditions, which means your investment is still a good thing years down the track. The designs work better as well, with simple things such as higher windscreens to help keep you dry in rougher water, safe high freeboard, big swim platforms, proper diamond tread grip moulded into all of the horizontal surfaces, bigger fuel capacities and the patented extended V-plane hulls that keep the bow down for faster holeshots and lower fuel consumption. The ethos and passion start at the top with the original founder of Chaparral, Buck Pegg (What a great American name!) still working the production line floor and heavily influencing the substantial multimillion-dollar annual R&D programs. Buck and his team have been busy over the last few years releasing several new models including the best selling H2O entry level sport and ski/fish bowrider range, which had reached the 200th sold milestone, as recently announced by the Aussie importer. “The H2O has been a phenomenal success story for Chaparral worldwide,” says Scott O’Hare from Chaparral Australia. “In particular, Australians
Other popular models are the Vortex jet boats, which are available with Chaparrals award winning aerial surf platform or ASP, a unique device that takes the jet thrust and turns it into a surf wave - a world first! The Vortex range has become a major focus for the innovative boat builders who believe that offering jet power in a comfortable hull package suitable for salt will open up new markets such as the Gold Coast. “Once again salt water thinking means fresh water cooled, self draining decks, deep-V entry for a soft ride, and way more comfort than a traditional jet boat design. We reckon these will be a winner on the Gold Coast needing only 300mm of water to operate in,” says O’Hare. “I know my run in the 223 VRX with twin 250 HP motors was bordering on crazy as we shot past the 60 mph mark on roughish water, not a ride for the faint hearted. And then, once we found the magic spot, out came the surfboard. Suddenly, the boat was transformed into serious wake machine! Very impressive, that’s for sure!” shares O’Hare. Not to be outdone Chaparral has also released the new Suncoast range of outboard bowriders, Chaparrals first outboards in 25 years. With both sport and ski/fish options available from 21 to 25 feet, these spacious comfortable deck boats, each with toilet, wet bar and huge storage capacity, are the perfect day boat. Easy to trailer, keep on the dock outside your house, or dry stack and with the mighty Yamaha outboard, you will run all day at very low fuel cost and completely hassle free. In fact, since 2011, Chaparral has released over 35 new models, including cruisers, Xtreme salt water wake boats, and even the world’s biggest (and fastest) bowrider, the 337SSx. If flying along with twenty of your friends at 100kmh tickles your fancy, then the 337SSx is definitely worth a look. It even has an overnight cabin for two. Yes, that’s right - a 33-foot bowrider with a cabin. Now that has to be the perfect Gold Coast boat! If you are in the market to upgrade your current boat or thinking about getting started, check out what Chaparral has to offer. You will be impressed. The friendly folk at Stefan Boating World in Coomera look after Chaparral on the coast, and the strong Aussie network of dealerships ensure top notch after sales service no matter where you go boating. Most models are available immediately. Go to www.chaparralboats.com for more info.

MANAGERS OF OUR MARINAS PAUL SORRELL
STEVE SAMMES
General Manager, Horizon Shores Marina
Chief Operating Of f icer, Gold Coast Cit y Marina
I am a Certified Marina Manager (CMM). I have sailed competitively from a young age and worked with some of the world’s most luxurious craft during major events and shows. As a marina manager over many years, I have seen it all! While I was working at the super yacht marinas in Abu Dhabi, Richard Branson spent time with us at the opening of one of our new restaurant s, prior to the star t of the inaugural Abu Dhabi F1 .He was impressed and was also quoted as saying that our team were exceptionally well -trained and presented. At the marina, we tr y to minimise the risk of incident s before they occur. However, it would be false to say they don’t exist . One par ticular incident involved suspicious ac tivities and reinforced the cliché, “Go with your gut feeling! ” We repor ted to the authorities as soon as there was doubt .
NEAL ADAMS Harbour Master, Couran Cove Island Resor t Marina I have 28 years of boating career. I was an RYA sailing instructor in Manly and New Zealand, and have been captain/ manager of various vessels in the Nor thern Hemisphere. In my current work, I get to meet such diverse groups of people. At Couran Cove Island Resor t , I greet boat owners and day trippers, and inform them of all the pleasures that await them on the land. It is also always a pleasure to have dolphins coming into the marinas, chasing mullet , f licking their catch into the air and generally having fun. I par ticularly f ind Pete “The Pilot ” of Cloud Nine Sea Plane par ticularly interesting. He is an excellent aviator, landing his seaplane within the marina, either on the beautiful white sand beach or at the end of “B” arm to deliver guest s from scenic f light s.

I am a Cer tif ied Marina Manager (CMM) and have been involved with the marina industr y for over 25 years. I am chairman - elec t to represent Queensland’s marina interest s on the board council of the Boating Industr y A ssociation. Operating the largest facilit y of it s kind in the Southern Hemisphere, with some 600 people employed at the site, has a multitude of daily challenges. The key element to ensuring the smooth running of the marina is good staf f. Happy and content staf f equates to happy and content customers. A good experience for me is meeting Ray Pickering, who now in his 80s is living proof that one is never too old to enjoy boating; hence, I fondly refer to him as the Lord Mayor of GCCM !
MICHAEL AHERNE Harbour Master, Hope Island Marina
Way back in the 1980s, my love of scuba diving of ten required many hours and days on board boat s of all shapes and sizes to reach dive sites around the world; that fascinated me about boating. Each day at Hope Island Marina is dif ferent , and it is this element of challenge and excitement that led me to take on this role. My enjoyment always increases when I see the local wildlife such as pelicans and dolphins on my daily walk- around. The walk- around keeps me involved in the life of the communit y. Around Christmas time in 2015, a young lady in her early 20s arrived at the marina to restock her 12- metre yacht . She told me she was half way through her solo round the world voyage. You cannot fail to be impressed!

Marinas are like hotels for our boats. And like hotels, customer services and amenities are sacred features. Let’s meet those in charge of some of Gold Coast’s marinas. HELEN MOTTERAM Marine Operations Manager, Mulpha Sanc tuar y Cove Marina I grew up in Wes tern Aus tralia and we had a beach house where we spent all our holidays. Dad always had a boat . It was jus t par t of growing up — crabbing, f ishing and exploring the coas t line. I moved to Queensland in 1990 and s tar ted working with the Sanc tuar y Cove International Boat Show team in 1991 where I s tayed for many years before moving to the marina in leasing adminis tration, then to marina manager. The great thing about this job is ever y day is dif ferent , always changing and always busy. You need to be on top of your marine maintenance and have a good rappor t with your client s. Keeping your environment intac t is a big one, ensuring it ’s there for ever yone to enjoy for many years to come. I love this work and the people, so I don’t feel like I ’m working. Owning a boat and being out on the water ways is one of life’s treasured pleasures!
SHANE SUBICHIN General Manager, The Boat Works As a kid, I spent a lot of time boating on Sydney Harbour and the Pittwater. I moved to the Gold Coast at 22 to take up new employment, and then started my new lifestyle—boating on the beautiful Broadwater to Moreton Bay. I feel I have been ver y luck y to experience three of the most per fec t boating destinations to enjoy my life! I am now raising my three -year old son, Beau, the way I was raised. I feel this is the best way for any kid if they have the oppor tunit y. A s a marina manager, I have been privileged to meet a wide variet y of customers, brokers, contrac tors, suppliers, etc. I enjoy building relations with the clientele, and I look for ward to seeing them come back each year. Satisfac tion for me is knowing that I have helped and made a dif ference. For me, Tony Longhurst is inspirational, a ver y generous and a caring person, and a driving force within the business.

Marina Manager, Boat Masters Hope Harbour, Travel Lif t
Water front Manager, Southpor t Yacht Club
Prior to the lengthy period spent in the swimming pool manufacturing sector in the 80s and 90s, I was involved in the shipping industry working as a seagoing engineer in the 70s. Prior to joining Maritimo, I was involved for many years in composites associated with pool manufac turing. This industr y was ver y innovative in many ways in composite design, manufac turing techniques and transpor t . Pleasure cruiser manufac turers today use these techniques and materials and today ’s boat s are stronger due to the development s and advances made in manufac turing through the 80’s and 90’s. The priorit y that we, as a team at Boat Masters Hope Harbour, have on our minds each day is get ting it done right the f irst time.
Growing up in the southern beaches of Sydney, I have always been involved with boat s, power boat racing and waterskiing from the age of 8. I arrived on the Gold Coast in 2001 and worked as an operations manager, then moved into the marina industr y as a harbour master and marina manager. In 2012, I joined Southpor t Yacht Club as marina manager, soon to be promoted to water front manager, overseeing SYC’s 300 - ber th private marina, hardstand facilities, DUX anchorage and all other things water front . One of the most Interesting things at SYC is dealing with super yacht s from around the world. It is ver y impor tant to make sure that the members are happy and that the marina facilities are up to scratch.

CHARGING TO
Electric Propulsion By Andy Kancachian Research by Kim Rafael Llige

This provides ample torque available at any engine speed, allowing electric engines to run substantially higher efficiency propellers even in lower performance classes,” explains Steven Mullie, managing director of Eco Boats Australia.

E
lectric powered engines have recently been regarded as the future when it comes to propulsion systems. There is a perception that electric engine technology is a new concept. However, electric motors have been in existence since the early 1800’s. Mortiz Hermann Von Jacobi, a Russian inventor, developed an electric motor that powered the first electric cars. In 1836, with financial support from Tsar Nicolas, Jacobi installed an improved version of his motor in a 28-foot paddle boat. With the boat carrying 14 passengers, it crossed the Neva River on September 1838. This would be the first documented launch of an electric boat.
The Torqeedo company has also pioneered the development of lithium batteries for boat applications. Uniquely, the brand’s “Travel” model outboards incorporate the battery at the top of the outboard for convenience. Watersnake This is another electric outboard brand well-suited for Australian conditions. While the entry level Watersnake models are transom-mounted tiller steer, a fisherman will find the bow-mounted electric outboard with foot controls useful for stealth fishing. The bow mounts are installed as close to the centre line as possible and the thrust of the propeller is used to ‘pull’ the boat along. With a foot control for steering and throttle, this method is useful for lure casting and trolling. The top-
Present-day electric outboards There are several companies manufacturing electric boat engines and distributing globally. We take a look at four brands that are currently available in the Australian market. Duffy Jacobi was restricted by the technology and materials of the time, his electric boat capable of just 2.5 kph and eventually improved to 4 kph. With the advent of the petrol outboard motors, the use of electric power for boats declined from the 1920s until the Duffy Electric Boat Company of California started mass-producing small electric craft in 1968. Its founder, Marshal “Duffy” Duffield, came up with the idea by taking the electric motor from an old golf cart and placing it in an old motor boat. He eventually patented his unique motor design and has produced over 10,000 boats to this day. Torqeedo This is one of today’s most advanced electric propulsion systems. Torqeedo engines are designed and manufactured in Germany and distributed locally by Eco Boats Australia. The torqeedo outboard range from 1HP for trolling, to an impressive 80HP able to push the hull onto the plane. One important feature of Torqeedo electric systems is a flatter torque curve. “Electric engines feature a much flatter torque curve than petrol engines. 38

BOAT PROPULSION OPTION Most electric outboard motors have 0.5 to 4-kw direct current (DC) electric motors, operated at 12 to 60 volts DC. These systems have the propeller fixed directly to the motor, which is mounted in the lower unit under water. This setup limits the power output. Recently developed outboard motors are powered with an alternating current (AC) or DC electric motor in the power head like a conventional petrol engine. With this setup, a motor can produce 10-kw output or more and is able to replace a petrol engine of 15 HP or more. The advantage of the induction or asynchronous motor is the power transfer to the rotor by means of electromagnetic induction. As these engines do not use permanent magnets, they require less maintenance and develop more torque at lower RPM.

end models offer inbuilt GPS functions for locking on locations and travelling straight lines to destinations. Recommended to be powered by deep cycle marine batteries, the Watersnake range offers 24-lb to 80-lb thrust with battery life determined by how fast you are running the motor, the payload and the conditions, i.e. wind and chop. UQM ReGen Nautic This is an electric outboard that truly performs like a highpower performance petrol engine, able to push a boat up onto the plane and even pull an adult water-skier out of the water. The company are producing 100-, 180and 300-HP models with the popular model boasting a staggering 135-kw output. While these models are now available on the market, the cost of purchasing both the engine and the bank of batteries required is preventing this revolutionary technology from directly competing with petrol powered engines in the Australian market. As the world advances into electric powered vehicles, the constantly improving low-cost battery technology will eventually be utilised by electric boat engine builders. Regen Nautic reports, “With the recent advances in energy storage, and the highly efficient UQM motor system, we are starting to see some commercial marine applications that have complete system payback in as little as twelve months.” The president and chief executive officer of UQM Technologies, Eric R. Ridenour, believes, “Everybody will have electric outboards.” Electric outboards on GC waterways The Duffy technology caught the attention of Gold Coast resident Nitsa Kerr, who originates from California. Kerr is utilising the Duffy electric power boat technology in her iconic Southport-based boat hire company. The tourist attraction can run the boats during a days trading hours with a single charge, and the silent motors make the Duffy boats very sociable, allowing quiet conversation while cruising the Gold Coast waterways. Kerr is an ambassador for electric boats and shares real MAY - jul 2016
life advantages of the Duffy technology. “We’re on our sixth year of business and we haven’t yet replaced any of our batteries. What’s more, our boats are fitted with double batteries and with a single charge we get nineand-a-half hour running time, which makes good sense for a rental business.” The Sanctuary Cove resort security team command a small fleet of electric powered patrol boats. The catamaran style hulls are equipped with dual Torqeedo Cruise 4 outboards, which are equivalent to 10HP petrol models, provide silent patrolling of the residential waterways. Reaching a top speed of 10 knots on a full charge, the boats can operate for 20 hours. Torqeedo distributor, Steven Mullie suggests, “In this type of application, the electric engines save money and have additional benefits. Electric outboards are ideal when in operation 24 hours, 7 days a week. With no rest, the low speed patrol work, with constant requirements for forward and reverse movement, are ideal for pollution free residential patrolling. This application does not require high speed, just a constant 4 knots. So, using electric engines ensures minimal running costs and low maintenance service because there is only one moving part. Coupled with the Torqeedo lithium batteries, they work really well.” There is also a significant advantage of electric power when canal boating and fishing. For lowspeed cruising of the canals or for use while lure-fishing, the quiet serenity of the electric engine is well suited. Electric trolling engines, installed onboard as an auxiliary engine used for fishing, have been a hugely successful seller for boat and engine dealers and fishing and tackle store operators.
Electric vs petrol
When you compare a clean-running 4-stroke outboard and an electric outboard, the long term cost differences are not so significant. However, the high performance electric engines—marketed as an alternative to petrol engines and carry a much higher price tag that include a large bank of batteries—have not yet been as successful in terms of sales as predicted. Steve Mullie states, “In 20 years, the price comparison between high-powered electric outboards and petrol engines will be less significant.” These high-end models are initially being marketed to commercial users looking for a long-term return-oninvestment by installing electric engines for considerable fuel cost savings and lower maintenance expenses. The progress of electric boat engine technology and market penetration has been summed up best by Elco Motor Yachts owner Joseph Fleming. He said, “We’re at the beginning of a tidal wave. Everything that moves— cars, trucks, trains, boats and planes—they’ll all be electric.”
Purchase Price: The low-end electric engines used for cruising and trolling are reasonably priced and in many cases cheaper than petrol engines for some applications. While the high-end performance models are considerably more expensive than petrol, this is due to the small numbers currently being sold. The larger banks of batteries used to store the required power for the performance models are costly even when compared with fuel consumption at top speed. Recharging: Batteries for electric engines are heavy. They also often take a long time to recharge. The recharging of the deep cycle batteries will take a few hours. However, an electric boat engine can be recharged using solar panels or wind generators while at sea. On the other hand, refueling a petrol engine is instant. Petrol engine capacities are only limited by the size of the fuel tank. Recharging the batteries will cost only a few dollars, whereas petrol prices are up to $1.80 per litre at waterside pumps. Maintenance and storage: The electric boat motors are almost maintenance-free and do not require regular servicing. A power engine will cost at least a few hundreds of dollars a year or more to service. As petrol is a flammable substance, it is often difficult to store. Not so with electric systems. Safety and convenience: With electric technology, batteries can be also used to power lights and other electric systems. The propeller of a lower torque electric engine will immediately stop if it has been obstructed, whereas a petrol engine will cause serious harm if it makes contact with the body. Electric egines are a quiet alternative to the often messy and loud petrol motors. Electric engines have proven to be very dependable.

T
radition and technology have been part and parcel of our world’s maritime history. Different cultures, changing ocean environments, and diverse uses and purposes influence the design, technology, capacities and utility of ships and boats in general, over the centuries. The yonder days of lighthouses, octants and sextants, and mechanical chronometers are now encapsulated into time machines we call museums. For Queensland, maritime history is integral because of the vast coastline and the hazardous Great Barrier Reef. The Queensland Maritime Museum (QMM) is home to this rich maritime history.
FEATURES AT QMM There are several ongoing events and exhibitions that provide significant information and insights about certain points in history. Built Beneath The Bridge is an exhibit that tells the story of Evans Deakin Shipbuilders, a significant Brisbane engineering firm, through photographs and models from the Museum’s collection. This includes the story of how “The Pin” saved Brisbane—the actual pin itself is on display.
The Pin That Saved Brisbane: The Robert Miller (239m long, 15m high and 66,703 tonnes) was at Kangaroo Point during the Brisbane 1974 floods and may have caused much more damage if she had blocked the river flow. In the journey downriver the shorter anchor cable ran out to the end, the pin sheared and fell out and the anchor cable dropped into the river. The ship, after this momentary check, again gathered way until checked by the other anchor cable running out to the “bitter” end. The shear pin snapped, but the two halves did not jump out as was designed and the last link of the anchor chain jammed in the bitter end bracket, and held the bow of the ship against the force of the flow of the river. 40
Among the navigational aids in the past, lighthouses are always fascinating facets of history—maritime or otherwise. The Lighthouse Gallery at QMM shows the evolution of lighthouse lamps from the earliest oil wick burners, kerosene and acetylene-powered lights through to an early laser light and currently used equipment. It shows the principles of the Fresnel lens and how mariners many kilometres away can see a flame in a kerosene lamp. QMM CEO Ian Jempson offers an insight into how modern-day navigation practices by recreational boaties have evolved. “Smart mariners use everything at their disposal: eyes, charts, compass, echo sounders.” GPS has become the sole technology of source by most recreational boaties, but it must be remembered that GPS is “garbage in, garbage out” technology. Famous boats and ships are on display, including Forceful, Fury and Ella’s Pink Lady. Built in 1925 by Alexander Stephen & Sons Ltd of Govan, Glasgow, Scotland, Forceful served the port of Brisbane for 45 years, being the last coal-fired tug in operation. Fury, a skiff-class dinghy, was built in 1937 by Norman Wright & Sons of Bulimba, Brisbane. Its 4.88m (16ft) hull is of batten-seam construction, the normal method used for the class at the time, and it is rigged with a high-peaked gunter mainsail. Ella’s Pink Lady is a Sparkman& Stephens 34-foot yacht, well respected for her seaworthiness, resilience and track record. The Pink Lady is part of sailing history after Gold Coaster Jessica Watson made history as the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world in 2009/10. The most iconic and biggest in the collection is the WW2 frigate HMAS Diamantina, built in Queensland and commissioned in 1945, and now the last remaining WW2 River Class frigate in the world. One of its main features is the cavity magnetron. In early 1940, Australian physicist Mark Oliphant and his team designed the cavity magnetron, which became one of Britain’s most closely guarded wartime secrets. With its cavity magnetron, the Type 271 radar had range and bearing discrimination small enough to detect small objects such as surfaced submarines and, in good weather, submarine periscopes. This type of radar was ideal for smaller warships like Diamantina tasked with protecting convoys and anti-submarine warfare. Interestingly, the cavity magnetron is also the “heart” of a household appliance—the microwave oven.
As an intact wartime vessel, complete with its machinery and equipment, Diamantinahas outstanding interpretive capacity: providing dramatic evidence of the workings of a warship and the conditions under which its personnel lived and worked. The ship also has scientific significance in marking an important transition in modern warship design, and for the evidence it provides of the development of radar and oceanography. (According to Jempson, it was through the research conducted on Diamantina that scientists have concluded that it is the Indian Ocean that affects Australian climate and has an impact on climate change.) Finally, Diamantina has spiritual significance for the descendants of hundreds of Australians who once served in the ship, particularly for those who were christened aboard. The QMM also offers a vast range of marine and maritime artefacts from the “large-size, the HMAS Diamantina, down to small, the1890 kayak, and much in between,” states Jempson. “The South Brisbane Dry Dock is an important heritage artefact and quite amazing to stand at the bottom of it. It is a rare opportunity worldwide.”
VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION More interesting to one’s visit is meeting the volunteers who help in the maintenance of the boats on display, and who also conduct boatbuilding activities at the workshop. As a volunteer-based organisation, QMM encourages younger people to get involved. “Established in 1971, the QMM is a credit to the 40 plus years of hard work by our fabulous group of volunteers and donors. In recent years, we have enjoyed very good assistance from a younger group of volunteers. There are challenges attracting volunteers and plenty of competition,” relates Jempson. “Following attendance at our Pirates Week earlier in 2015, a young participant who had enjoyed himself was heard telling his parent that he was going to become a volunteer at QMM when he grows up. Community-wide, I think we need to plant the seed in our children that you do not have to be grey-haired to be a volunteer.” Why should recreational boaties drop by for a visit at QMM? Jempson provides the reasons: “The wide diversity of craft on display, the craftsmanship of the boat builders, and the opportunity to relate to the experience of other mariners.” It is also great fun for the whole family! id you know that Benjamin Franklin and Charles Darwin collected valuable data in the 19th century without getting paid? On the Gold Coast, members of the community are involved in citizen science projects to collect and/or process data for a particular conservation project. Today most volunteers work together with one or more professionals in projects mainly in the area of: wildlife, water quality and plants in Australia. In 2014, a survey was conducted, which revealed that 83,558 citizen scientist were involved in 77 projects in Australia. Of the respondents, 66% classified themselves as professionals and only 13% as volunteers. This is a great number of people getting involved with meaningful and interesting projects. Scientists use volunteers more than ever to collect valuable data, especially for big projects. Through citizen science, it is also possible to run big projects which are not only restricted to regional locations but also have a national or international scope. Participants are able to learn how to collect data.

others look for shelter or food. The diversity of plants and animals create a valuable and unique coastal environment as each dune has its own composition.
The Gold Coast region hosts a range of citizen science projects that focus on our coastal environment, such as DuneWatch and MangroveWatch. DuneWatch was launched in December 2015 by the Griffith Centre of Coastal Management and was created to give the community an opportunity to assist in collecting vital information on the health of the sand dunes. This will expand the knowledge on the local dune systems and also maps current planting activities. Sand dunes are an important ecosystem as it protects our shorelines and therefore also our coastal development. Dune vegetation ensures that the sand is held together during storm events and attracts a variety of wildlife. A number of animal species will find their homes in the dunes;

BOAT FEATURE
ON BEING A ‘FREELOADER’ By Sue Parry-Jones
Photos by Andrew Kancachian
I
have been living on board my yacht now for about 4 1/2 years. In that time I have had the pleasure of living in West Australia, South Australia (including Kangaroo Island), Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland. I have spent significant amounts of time in Sydney Harbour, Port Stephens and the Whitsunday Islands, and now the lovely waterways of the Gold Coast Broadwater. While living on board I have been giving my children the most amazing education about this amazing country of ours and have been fortunate to be able to pursue my own interests - namely, establishing an on-going support organisation for victims and survivors of abuse. Everywhere we go, people tell us what an amazing choice we have made, marvel at the well-roundedness of our kids, remark about how respectful and open they are. And yet, despite the fact that we have contributed in a very significant way to something as important as assisting people to recover from abuse, and despite the fact that as we travel we contribute to every town we spend time in, apparently, the very fact of living on board a yacht makes us ‘freeloaders’. Well, I would like to tell you about some of the amazing ‘freeloaders’ my family and I have been privileged to meet over the last four years including now, right here on the Gold Coast.
THE PEOPLE I MEET
There have been a great many retired teachers - one a former woodwork teacher and his wife lovely people who, in retirement, had decided to move aboard their weekend recreational vessel and give themselves a well-earned break, exploring more of our great landscape by sea. Then, there is a special education teacher who spent years of her life trying to assist disabled children to reach their potential. There is the retired ferry builder whose passion for boats has filled his whole life. What better way to spend his well-earned retirement days than afloat on a boat of his own design and making! Early on in my ‘freeloading’ live-aboard days, I met Pete, the local school bus driver who called his boat his home, after splitting with his wife and leaving the house to her. And then there are the
44
pilots who wanted a life that would leave a smaller carbon footprint on the planet and who chose to forego the trappings of the yuppie lifestyle and instead live a simple life without many luxuries aboard their small yacht, while flying sea planes for a charter company. There are the fly-in fly-out miners who found a place to call home on a catamaran that they could relax in on their few days off a month. We have met students, businessmen and their families, doctors, nurses, former public servants and policemen, men who have served in our armed services at great cost to their personal lives, journalists and writers who continue to eke out a living with their pen in the comforts of their floating abodes.
A LIFE CHOICE
People choose to live aboard their vessels for as many different reasons as they choose to live in houses and drive cars. There is no one ‘type’ and at least half are self-funded retirees or age pensioners, while the other half is made up of a multitude of workers of various sorts, seasonal workers, parttime workers, workers from home, and writers. In the four and a half years we have lived on board, we have come across half a dozen people who live on board because they do not want to work or be contributing members of society. The label ‘freeloader’ is levelled at us because of a perception that we live for nothing in places where others are charged a hefty system of taxes and duties. But what is rarely acknowledged is that most live-aboards have made this choice later in life after having led meaningful lives where they have made contributions like everyone else. Folks who live aboard here on the Gold Coast are still members of the local community. We shop in the same shops as our land-neighbours, eat in the same cafes and restaurants, drive our cars, fill them with the same fuel, pay our various taxes GST, income tax - for work we do, and happen to go home at night to a boat that floats rather than a house that remains firmly planted on the ground. Many of us volunteer in a variety for ways - as bush firemen, as VMR and Coastguard members, as JP’s and counsellors. Our children attend schools and universities. We pay our way in the community in so many ways.
Sue, with her kids, Erina and Liam
But do not worry - it is not all a bed of roses. When the wind howls and you are safely tucked up in your solid and stable house, the ‘freeloader’ has a slightly more active time of it. Watching out for other boats that might drift with the gusty wind - especially those that have been abandoned or left unattended - making sure our own boats hold fast. We might have sleepless nights and restless days when we are watching and monitoring the weather waiting for it to ease. When it rains and we have to get to work, we might have an added layer of difficulty in needing to hop into a wet dinghy and drive it in the rain to the shore. And when the weather is really closing in, we might be stuck on the boat for days at a time - needing to make do with what stores we have until the weather changes. It is not always an easy choice. But please do not make the mistake so many do and think we are all a bunch of “dole-bludging ne’er do wells”. We are simply people who love boats enough to make them our homes. You will see us out and about often in the evenings or early mornings cleaning up after other visitors have long since driven away, removing the bottles and cans left behind - or out on the water helping stranded jet skiers or paddleboarders who have misjudged the tide. We choose a simple life, but I don’t think that necessarily makes us all ‘freeloaders’.

BOAT GOLD COAST
A new lease of life for
Odyssey
Tips for a perfect restoration: • Choose a good pedigree of original builder. • Your classic boat should be structurally sound. • Original design must be stylish and timeless to ensure easy resale. • Have a professional shipwright undertake a cost estimate prior to acquisition.
T
here are no shortcuts with wooden boat restorations. While some may see a shipwright-managed re-build as expensive, the fact is that finding an aging but well-built wooden sailing yacht or motor cruiser and restoring it can be the most cost-effective way to own a good quality boat that you would not otherwise be able to afford. Craig and his team at Lighthouse Shipwrights are immensely passionate about wooden boats. A professional shipwright, Craig Fielding has spent the good part of the last three years completely refurbishing Odyssey, a 70-foot timber MillKraft, originally commissioned by Gold Coast icon Keith Williams in 1971 and regarded as one of the best known motor yachts in Queensland. The owner of Odyssey, Mr C. Black, chose Craig and his team to undertake the mammoth task of rebuilding the yacht from the ground up and improving on the original design while retaining its classic characteristics. Craig knew it would be his largest project of this type but was confident that he could draw on his team’s expert workmanship and enlist the assistance of the many specialist companies based at the Gold Coast City Marina, which would be required to provide supporting services and equipment.
boatgoldcoast.com. au
• Factor in estimated restoration costs and then compare against resale values of similar refurbished vessels. Constructed using Oregon timber, Odyssey was stripped back. Using modern methods, it was thoughtfully modified to enhance every possible aspect. Craig and his team extended roof heights, installed doors and replaced windows, redesigned the entertainment areas, and extended the vessel’s transom by five feet. The team inlaid the interior floors with teak, installed a new galley, and completely reupholstered all furnishings, but retained the original wheel and hand railings. Machinery upgrades to Odyssey included the installation of stern and bow thrusters, repowering with twin John Deere diesel engines, a genset, new instrumentation, stabilizers, air-conditioning systems, desalinator and davit, with RIB tender. Technical advancements were fitted such as navigation systems, full instrumentation, new plough anchor and winch, and even a 50-inch television was mounted in the saloon. The Odyssey project demonstrates that Lighthouse Shipwrights have mastered the fundamentals of naval architecture principles and can apply that knowledge to design and building your dream vessel. With their comprehensive project management skills you can be assured your expectations will be met.
• Have the finances required so as not to delay the restoration. • If allowed, provide manual labour to your shipwright to reduce your costs. • Insist your shipwright only use wellrecommended quality materials and components. • Be patient and persevere if unexpected obstacles arise.
Odyssey showcases everything Craig and his team are capable of achieving. Whether it’s an anti-foul, a new duckboard, bathroom, paintwork, thrusters, stabilizers, plumbing, redesign and much more. Lighthouse Shipwrights will undertake restorations of any vessel deemed restorable. While working within your budget, the original style of the vessel will be preserved although modern technologies and features can be added. Restorations can begin from as little as $5000 on the smaller vessels, and Craig offers a free restoration consultation for those thinking of buying or restoring an oldie.

ames Keay, an award-winning designer, designed the Cruisecat multihull vessel back in 2003 on the Sunshine Coast. Since then it has been in production for both the charter and domestic arena, and is still currently utilised in service throughout Australia. The company’s efforts have remained focused on building quality products that are Australian-made. “The Cruisecat can be built from 30ft to 48ft, with a 55ft just around the corner,” says Mr Keay. “The powercat has been built to allow for diversity where you can design your Cruisecat with higher hulls and modify design layout all to suit the buyer’s requirements. The versatility of the Cruisecat is what makes it really stand out in its class.” The Cruisecat would have to be one of the most comfortable and spacious multihulls on the market. With its high tunnel clearance and incredible stability, you are guaranteed a soft dry ride in choppy conditions. Large fuel and water capacity make long range cruising or having a group of friends stay on board a breeze. This is the boat that caters for both his and her requirements where it provides the design features, performance and space that allows you to always enjoy being out on the water. The Cruisecat comfortably cruises at 17/19 knots and is capable of speeds in excess of 40 knots—yes, 40 knots! The Cruisecat is a stylish boat sure to impress the most discerning multihull buyer. “These vessels are currently hand-built at The Boat Works, Coomera. This refit, manufacturing and maintenance facility is the best I have seen. They can provide you with the best trades and services with friendly reliable staff to assist with your projects,” states Mr Keay. James Keay, owner of Pacific Paint & Fibreglass says, “As a business, we were looking for a point of difference in the market place, and as we are a distributor for PPG, we suggested the 12-month antifouling warranty. PPG agreed, but they required a reputable, professional applicator to ensure the integrity of the offer to the boat owners. CAS was the obvious choice.” This is a new approach from the industry. It takes the job of applying antifouling to a new level and gives owners much better value for money. “This is something boat owners have to do nearly every 12 months. The performance and enjoyment they get from their vessel very much depends on the quality of this work,” says David Harvey, marine manager of PPG. “This alliance allows us to give the very best of service and support to boat owners and showcase our products in their best light.” “CAS has always provided an excellent service to the boat owners,” says Joel Weymouth of CAS. “But with this new initiative, including strict quality assurance, record keeping, attention to detail and working closely with the coatings manufacturer, it means the outcome for the boat owner is even better.” All parties in this alliance are very excited about being able to bring a new way of doing business to the industry that means a big win for boat owners. BOAT ANGLER BOAT LEGAL
INSURANCE: GETTING IT RIGHT By Captain John Kavanagh, AFNI MQLS
W
hat is the right kind of marine insurance for you? Like many things maritime, insurance for vessels is not straightforward. There are essentially two different regimes that might apply to the insurance for your vessel depending upon whether your vessel is a recreational vessel registered under Queensland Law or registered as a domestic commercial vessel (DCV) under the National Law administered from Canberra. The ‘seascape’ has been complicated further by the creation of the ‘Queensland regulated ship’ (QRS) by amendments to Queensland’s marine safety legislation earlier this year.
The ICA Generally speaking, if your vessel is registered under State law as a recreational vessel or is not required to be registered at all, then any insurance policy you purchase is going to be made under the Insurance Contracts Act 1984 (Cth) (ICA). The ICA is a consumer-friendly piece of legislation that attempts to strike a fair balance between the interests of insurers, insured and other members of the public. Importantly, the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) has powers to supervise the handling of complaints and disputes in relation to ICA contracts of marine insurance. For most people, a contract of marine insurance under the ICA operates in a very familiar way, just like a contract of insurance for your car or for the contents of your house.
50
The MIA By contrast, an insurance policy for a DCV is issued under the Marine Insurance Act 1909 (Cth) (MIA). The MIA regime is quite the opposite of consumer friendly. Such contracts impose strict obligations on owners of vessels known as warranties. Such warranties must be strictly complied with, whether the warranty is relevant to the loss that happens or not. If the warranty is not strictly complied with, then the insurer does not have to pay on a claim. Perhaps the most important warranty given by a vessel owner to their insurer is that their vessel is seaworthy. Seaworthiness is a very broad concept and includes matters such as the suitability of the vessel for the intended voyage, the integrity of the hull, fitness of the equipment and the competency and number of crew, among other things. If any of those matters are deficient in any way, regardless of whether that deficiency caused the loss or not, then the insurer does not have to pay on a claim. To illustrate, if the port-hand side light of a vessel is not functioning, there is a clear breach of the seaworthiness warranty. If a collision occurs in broad daylight, and the port-hand sidelight has nothing to do with the cause of the collision, still the insurer does not have to pay because the seaworthiness warranty has not been complied with. What if I use my vessel occasionally for other than recreational purposes? This is where it gets interesting. The ICA regime permits the minor, infrequent or irregular use of a “pleasure craft” (defined as a ship that is used or intended to be used wholly for recreational activities, sporting activities, or both; and otherwise than for reward) for other than recreational activities. In other words, if you use your recreational vessel occasionally
for commercial purposes (such as filming a TV advertisement perhaps), then that should not bring your vessel under the MIA regime. It is, of course, important to notify your insurer if you use your vessel for other than recreational purposes because of your ongoing obligation to make disclosure. There may also be other issues arising that might make the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) consider your vessel to be a DCV. But for insurance purposes, this means that some vessels that would ordinarily fall under the MIA regime and be subject to warranties may, in some circumstances, instead continue to be insured under the more consumer-friendly ICA regime.
The QRS The creation of the third category of ships in Queensland, the QRS, is to cover those vessels that are neither purely for recreational use yet they are also not DCVs. Examples include vessels owned by schools and surf life-saving associations. There is an important legal question that has yet to be decided about whether the insurance for QRS should be written under the ICA regime or the MIA regime, given there is now a firm legal foundation for the use of some vessels for some kind of commercial activity. Given the consumer friendliness of the ICA, owners of QRSs will naturally prefer their QRS be covered under the ICA, but depending upon the circumstances, the commercial use of the vessel may not be occasional or infrequent, and so will trigger the application of the MIA. This question will ultimately fall to be decided by the courts. In the meantime, specialist maritime law advice should be obtained if you are in any doubt, because getting the wrong kind of insurance policy can prove very costly indeed.

BOAT GUIDE
JETSKI MAINTENANCE F
irst thing’s first. After every ride, always clean the whole ski before packing it away.
Put the ski in the shade and remove as much gear as possible to allow access to all areas. Open the hood, glove box and storage areas, and remove the seatsand placing them on a foam mat to avoid damage on the upholstery.
Remove Bungs If you have a bung in the storage or glove box, consider removing them completely. Water does not make its way back up into those areas and any water that does getin will drain through to the hull, which will be quickly dispersed by the bilge system. Open the bung plugs. This will allow the debris buildup in the hull (leaves and sand) to wash away easily, preventing blockages in bilge systems and damage to the hull that lead to disaster. Quick tip: Every few rides, take the bung plugs out completely with long nose pliers. Always return them to the hull as soon as possible, so you don’t get caught without them at the ramp.
Washing Chock the trailer wheels carefully. Place the jockey wheel onto a crate to lift the front of the ski allowing the hull to drain. • Hose the ski down from top to toe, inside and outside. Ensure that water does not enter the fuel breather, air intake or coils, and electrical areas. • Ensure you clean under the fuel tank, motor and coupler where the siphon bilge can become blocked. Pay attention to the supercharger belt and pulley if your ski has them. • Don’t forget to clean your tubs and seats, esp. underneath and the clips, to wash out salt and sand. • Use a liquid distributor bottle from the hardware that fits onto the end of the hose. • Pay attention to cleaning out the pump area at the
back and spray through the prop to clean the intake area to avoid corrosion from the salt. You may need to raise the reverse bucket to gain clear access and avoid spraying into the exhaust outlet. • Rinse off lightly inside and out with fresh water and wipe dry with a soft microfiber cloth. • Any remaining water in the hull should be pumped out using a hand pump. Quick tip: A good quality pump also provides an excellent way to extract oil for DIY servicing.
Flush Engine • Even after fresh water use, flushing is recommended
to remove any sand and algae weed from the cooling systema nd pump. • To do this, ensure the ski is on a level position. Depending on the make and model, your owner’s manual will explain how to flush, and indicate if your intercooler is on a separate line. Quick tip: You can use additives with a mild metal cleaner to keep the components clean and prevent corrosion and mineral build-up. • Gently “blow” any remaining water out of the water box by blipping your throttle. Your owner’s manual will offer the recommended maximum revolutions while out of the water, with no cooling or backpressure to the prop. DO NOT do this at the ramp before flushing, as it will “cook” the salt into the internal components.
Post-ride checks • Ensure your engine is level and the engine has
been idle for at least five minutes. • Pull out the dipstick to check the oil by wiping

it clean and re-dipping. It should sit within the manufacturer’s specifications indicated in your owner’s manual. If it has any milkiness to it you should contact your service agent as soon as possible, as this means water has made its way in there and extreme damage can occur. If the oil level has dropped, check the oil filter for leaks and look over the motor. If there are no leaks or apparent damage, refill to the correct level with the specified oil. If you are unable to explain the loss of oil, contact your service agent. • If your ski has closed-loop cooling, check the coolant level at the same time. • Using a torch, look into the hull and check for any disconnected hoses or items that may have come loose. • Inspect the pump at the back to look for any damage to the prop or liner/wearing. • Inspect the outside of the hull for any damage from rocks, as this may worsen if left unrepaired. • Check over your trailer for tyre and bearing condition, corrosion build-up (especially around the forgotten jockey wheel/hitch area) and the winch strap condition. • Taps are sometimes a long way from where you are when working on a ski, so use a fitting that controls the water flow at the ski to save you time and trouble. • Always refuel on your way to the ramp to ensure fresh fuel and a full tank. Use the best quality fuel as much as possible. • Check your engine hours to make sure a service is not due. With proper care, a ski can stay in great condition and last for a decade or more. Important Note: Although the above tips are based on actual experience, they do not replace professional advice from your service agent. Always check the owner’s manual for specific instructions that pertain to your specific ski brand and model.

Boaties’ Breakfasts The Ultimate Power Starts with a Harbour View
Cruising up by water to a café in the morning is an ideal way to wake up your boatie senses. Here are breakfast spots that offer the best harbour views on the Gold Coast. Food tasting reviews and photos by Michael Von Backstrom, Roselle Tenefrancia and Andy Kancachian.
The Galley (The Boat Works, Coomera) A comfortable spot among the sails and masts allows you to soak up the views of the boats, the natural wood and reclaimed timber interior. The beautiful carpentry alone is breathtaking, making this breakfast destination (with easy mooring access) an absolute must. Our favourite is the Boat Works Benny ($16) with poached eggs and avocado salsa with (or without) toast. Good coffee and friendly fast service are mainstays. But in this case we just wanted to laze around, enjoy the views, soak up the excitement of actual boat works, and absorb the “old-ship” carpentry.
Klein’s Coffee, Bar & Grill (Runaway Bay Marina, Runaway Bay)
Red Rock Waterfront Bar (Hope Island Shopping Centre, Hope Island) The great views of the hinterland and waterfront marina, the warm inviting ambiance, busy atmosphere, sophisticated decor and the luring aroma of Bear Bones coffee are all good reasons to linger over brekkie at Hope Island’s ever popular Red Rock Waterfront Bar & Grill. Not only does its menu cover the coast’s favourite brekkies, but it also oozes originality with its modern twists and wholesome flairs. The Caprese Breakfast ($18) fresh avocado, poached eggs, bacon and a fresh tomato caprese salad served on Turkish toast, with a red wine vinegar glaze - is an absolute must. Eggs Benedict always used to be just another Eggs Benedict to me, until we had theirs ($17) served with homemade hollandaise. They truly have set the bar very high. 54
With the best view of the marina, Klein’s Coffee, Bar & Grill is open seven days a week and has a great breakfast menu that ticks all boxes. All menu items such as the Nutritional Breakfast ($15.9), Small Breakfast ($7.9), Omellette ($10.9) and Supa Breakfast ($13.9) all portray true value for money. But it was the uniquely different Rosti Stack ($17.9) that made this breakfast experience a memorable one. A rosti set on baby spinach, bruschetta, and a poached egg all topped with hollandaise sauce is perfectly paired with a great cappuccino ($4.2) and fast friendly service. Klein’s nailed it!
The Press Café (Harbour Village, Coomera Waters) This small yet busy café overlooks the marina. Its open-plan kitchen layout adds to the vibe, as Damien and his team push out the orders in no time. Nobody likes getting their breakfast when their coffee is either cold or finished. The Breakfast Burgers ($10) and coffees arrived in less than five minutes(!), and are therefore very popular with the boaties for takeaways. A lightly toasted Brioche Bun comes with fried egg, bacon, cheese, tomato, rocket, BBQ sauce and aioli - light yet filling, saucy but not messy. It’s not every day one finds great value with superfast and friendly service.

Quarter Deck Kitchen & Bar
Edgewater Dining
(Gold Coast City Marina, Coomera)
(Capri on Via Roma, Isle of Capri)
Delicious food, Calippo Café coffee, friendly staff and a relaxing view amount to an excellent breakfast experience! Quarterdeck’s breakfast variety manages to satisfy, with the Smashed Avocado ($18) being highly recommended, with two perfectly poached eggs on sourdough accompanied with grilled bacon and a flavourful dukkah twist. For the larger appetite, the QD’s Big Breakfast ($22) is a winner, and includes grilled bacon, pork and fennel sausage, eggs, beans, confetti cherry tomatoes, two potato rostis and sourdough toast. For a lighter option, Quarter Deck’s homemade granola is a must try.
The trendy Edgewater Dining has a very welcoming eight-berth public pontoon directly in front it. Operated by restaurateurs Peter and Tracey Cianci, Edgewater has a constantly evolving menu that incorporates the seasonal changes. A light brekky option is the French Toast ($17) with crispy smoked bacon, nutmeg, cinnamon and maple syrup. Healthy options include the Bircher Muesli ($16.5) with dried fruits and nuts, honey, seasonal berries and yoghurt and a Market Fresh Fruit Plate ($15.5) with natural yoghurt and Manuka honey. The Edgewater Dining breakfast menu is a truly comprehensive gastronomic experience, as you begin the morning with the view of Surfers Paradise skyline.
Southport Yacht Club (Main Beach, Southport) With the majestic charm of the Southport Yacht Club harbour to mesmerise you, it’s a great place to begin your weekend with a hearty buffet breakfast ($15pp). Good honest food, the bountiful selection is undeniably value for money. For starters, there is a fresh fruit platter and cereal of your choice, and a variety of wholegrain bread. The buffet selection includes scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon rashers, sausages, baked beans, and grilled tomatoes. Flowing fruit juices, brewed coffee and tea are available. Guests will be captivated by kids enjoying the introductory Funsail on the Club’s sandy beach, especially with the capsizing drill, when the kids get wet and frolic madly in the water - by far the most entertaining. Buffet breakfast is available Saturdays and Sundays.
Anchorage Café
The Boatshed Bar
(Horizon Shores Marina, Wongoolba)
(Currumbin Creek, Currumbin)
One of the Gold Coast and Brisbane’s best kept secrets, the Anchorage Cafe overlooks the boats at the marina. You can enjoy a peaceful breakfast, and listen to the sounds of water lapping against the hulls, fish leaping out of the water, birds popping in with their ‘Mornin’ tweet, and then, if you’re lucky, you can spot the delightful frolics of dolphins playing around the marina. We recommend the ever-reliable Eggs Benedict ($16), using a delightful assortment of fresh and local ingredients, served on a bed of toasted Turkish bread and topped with a collaboration of wilted spinach, two poached eggs, tomato, hollandaise and your choice of ham, bacon or salmon. The Anchorage Café is gluten-free friendly and have lactose-free milk options. Courtesy berths are available free of charge while dining at the café. To confirm a brekky berth, book ahead.
The serene creek first thing in the morning is an amazing shade of blue that you don’t see everywhere. The area boasts a strong SUP community, dragon boat teams, surf life savers, houseboats, kayaks, tinnies, even the occasional trailer-sailor yacht cruising passing. Boatshed manager, Glen Spragg, and head chef, Tommy Kennedy, are both keen sailors, racing every week at Southport Yacht Club, and are also surfers and paddle boarders. For a full tummy, we recommend the Boss Brekkie ($16) with spinach, bacon, smashed avocado, two poached eggs on toasted ciabatta. An interesting boatie’s favourite, the Blackened Benny ($15.5) on ciabatta with house-made black pudding and fresh hollandaise sauce, may not be for everyone, but we found it delicious.
boatgoldcoast.com. au
Raw Kitchen & Espresso (Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove) This vibrant restaurant has great views over the marina and the luxury boats. Head chef, Owen Tredwen, who has been at the helm since they first opened, changes the specials every fortnight keeping up with - if not setting - trends. Raw’s Smoked Salmon Breakfast ($19.5), smoked on-site and served with potato herb cakes simply blew us away. A great gluten-free option is the Avocado and Persian Fetta on Sourdough ($17.5) topped with caramalised onions, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Great value for money, especially the coffee, with firstrate ambience.

BOAT GALLEY
By Sgt Giancarlos Taraborrelli
Ingredients Serves 4-6 people (using a 360mm paella pan over moderate heat)
I
spend a great deal of time away from home and in the field as a Sergeant with The Royal Australian Regiment. So when at home, I devote my spare time keeping up fitness at the gym, doing a spot of fishing and cooking meals for friends and family.
Born to an Italian father and a Brazilian mother, the dishes I enjoy cooking reminds me of life growing up always surrounded by good food. When cooking, I usually start with a good family recipe and experiment with new flavours to add my own little touch. I believe my family origins gave me a strong sense of kinship expressed through cooking and eating together. Although these days my family is located all over Australia, they do get together for special occasions usually cooking together in the kitchen while drinking and laughing. These are serious family food festivities that, during breakfast, we plan with great passion what we will be cooking for lunch and dinner that day. This is my take on the Spanish paella! Centuries-old tradition of paella (pronounced pah-e-lyah in Spanish) It is believed paella originated from Spain near the city of Valencia. Most commonly made with seafood, vegetables and meats, and seasoned with saffron and other spices. The name paella refers to the pan that it is cooked in and is regarded as Spain’s national dish. Traditionally, the rice was grown locally, and seafood and meats were sourced from the region. Historically, paella was cooked in an over-sized large pan on an open fire, effectively maximizing the required evaporation and conserving the scarce wood supply.
3 teaspoons olive oil 6 cloves garlic 100 grams of brown onion, diced 50 grams red capsicum, diced 50 grams green capsicum, diced 250 grams pork ribs cut lengthways 400 grams of chicken wings (end cut off & thrown away) cut at the knuckles 200 grams of marinara mix 300 grams green prawns 1 chorizo, diced 1 tin of diced tomatoes 4 cups arborio rice Salt and pepper to taste Spice mix to taste 1 teaspoon of saffron mixed into a cup of boiled water 2 cups of vegetable stock 100 grams of sliced green beans 8 fresh mussels, de-beared, cooked separate in a pan with oil garlic and parsley with squeezed fresh lemon Parsley
Method: Place garlic, onion and capsicum and olive oil in a pan. Add chicken and pork. Cook over moderate heat for 15 minutes or until the chicken is nearly cooked. Add chorizos, prawns and marinara mix. Add half of the spice mix. Cook until all the ingredients are cooked through. Add tomatoes. Stir into mix, then add vegetable stock, green beans, salt and pepper. Pour two (2) cups of boiled water or enough to immerse the ingredients. Stir. Add the rice. Stir in the rest of the spice mix. Once the rice is settled, add the saffron and mussels. You should do a little taste test to see if you need to add more spice. Simmer and cover with foil for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the liquid stock has evaporated and the rice is cooked. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving. Squeeze fresh lemon over dish and garnish with parsley.

Salt Water Therapy
Spotlight on Currumbin BoatShed ByJulia Baird-Oryshak
What three words describe your shop? Salt Water Therapy.
“To leave all your worries on the sand and to have the salt water wash away everything, leaving you with nothing but good vibes.”
I
had the pleasure of sitting down with Leo, the owner of the Currumbin BoatShed Bait & Tackle for what was probably the most relaxed and easygoing interview that has ever happened. The interview consisted of sitting on a bench overlooking the Currumbin Creek while wearing shorts and thongs. It is not hard to imagine that the little shop sitting on the edge of the beautiful Currumbin Creek created this relaxed setting. You can see why people come here—to get their salt water therapy.
Leo sitting next to me was especially easy going, and why wouldn’t he be? Owning your own shop on the edge of the Currumbin Creek sounds like a dream come true. For Leo and partner Alicia, this
boatgoldcoast.com. au
dream was only realized a couple of years ago. The tradesman of 30 years (and avid fisherman) decided to make a life change and jumped on the opportunity to buy the BoatShed once he found out that a lifelong friend had it for sale. The shop has grown a lot since its humble beginnings five and half years ago. Starting out as mainly a bait and tackle shop with a few paddle boards and kayaks, they now have over 80 paddle boards. Not only do they have more in quantity but they also provide quality, as 95% of their products are made in France fabricated from premium materials. Along with new products, there has also been more community involvement from the shop. This year they sponsored the Bleach*Festival by supplying paddle boards. They also held a day with 92.5 Gold FM to stand up (on paddle boards) against domestic violence, where over 100 paddle boarders were on the water standing up for the cause.
When I asked Leo about what he wanted to achieve with these community events, he was nonchalant and said something along the lines of, “I’m not Mr. Community. But this community has given a lot to me, and so I want to give back to it.” You can tell that he’s not trying to prove to be something that he’s not, but is simply just a good person who owns a great shop which is where all the good vibes come from that surround the area. Leo says he works to see that “paddle board smile” - the look that people come back with after having successfully paddle-boarded when they initially thought otherwise. There are regulars who come to the BoatShed a few times a week to get their dose of salt water therapy (but beginners and visitors are always welcome). The BoatShed also offer free tuition because they want everyone to have a bit of general knowledge about SUP before they venture off. The inviting music of either blues or reggae will be playing in the background, kids will be having fun, and everyone no matter their age, shape or size will be out on the water enjoying themselves. So leave your worries on the sand, and let the saltwater wash away everything! About Currumbin A beachfront community in the southern Gold Coast, where Currumbin Creek waterway links to the rainforest mountains to the west. The creek offers a protected and patrolled haven for water sports, such as stand-up paddle boarding, rowing and kayaking. The rock wall offers abundant flathead and bream fishing, while the beach offers tailor.

BOAT JOURNEY
A boatie’s haven on a lake:
Lake Moogerah
T
hinking of your next camping-and-boating trip in one? What about a picturesque campsite right next to a placid lake, and enjoying water sports with family and friends before you opt for a quiet moment of fishing?
Such an ideal out-of-town boating location with a majestic Mt Edwards as the backdrop is Lake Moogerah. Nestled in the Boonah district and referred to as the heart of Scenic Rim, Lake Moogerah has a peaceful and quiet rural setting surrounded by lofty mountains. Located approximately just 100km southwest of the Gold Coast, it is a scenic two hour-drive west towards the great diving range. The area derives its name from the Aboriginal word moojirah, meaning “home of the thunderstorm. And on our visit on Easter Sunday, the rains and storms did not disappoint. Completed in 1961, the lake has a catchment area of 228km2 and provides irrigation water to landholders along Reynolds Creek, with water also diverted to farmers in the Warrill Valley.
Boating By far, the best attraction on this lake is boating. Motorised and non-motorised watercrafts are permitted on the lake, which draws fishermen, and those into water skiing, jet skiing, wakeboarding and tubing to visit with boats and water toys in tow during long weekends and holidays. The Lake Moogerah Caravan Park rent out tinnies and kayaks for those without their own watercrafts in tow. The holiday seasons attract the most watercrafts to the lake. This year’s Easter weekend gathered approximately 80 watercrafts with 1/3 of those quizzed originating from the Gold Coast. (The rest mostly come from Brisbane and surrounding townships, and other places). There are two public boat ramps at the lake and the waters are also well signed due to the safety risks posed by submerged hazards. A 6-knot speed limit in the heavily timbered arms of lake is imposed. There is a no boating/fishing zone around the dam wall. It should be noted that much of the land surrounding the lake
is private property. Launching, retrieving or beaching on land around the lake are not allowed, except at signed designated recreation areas. Permits are not required for boating. Overnight stays on the water are not permitted.
Fishing You can fish from your boat or along the shores in the designated recreation areas. Moogerah Lake is one of South East Queensland’s more established lake fisheries and has been stocked by Maroon Moogerah Fish Stocking Association. Local angler, Dan, from Beenleigh, has been coming to the lake for years. He points out there are well fed big fish in the lake, so fish can be easily caught from a boat or along the shoreline. Dan and his son, Jake, caught several fish each morning of their stay, by using live shrimp baits they caught overnight using a bait trap. Dan recommends casting lines five metres from a boat, around the heavily timbered areas or the rock points near the dam wall. By counting down depths to find where the bass are holding at, father and son were able to bring in five good-sized Australian bass. In the lake, baitfish such as bony bream and shrimp are common. Although the main species are Australian bass, you can also catch silver and golden perch, Mary River cod, eels and a freshwater catfish called tandanus. A Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) is required to fish at Lake Moogerah.
CAMPING At the Lake Moogerah Caravan Park, powered and unpowered tent and caravan sites, as well as overnight cabin sites are available. The Park’s front office has been managed by Robyn for 12 years. She has personally been coming to the Park since 1983, and explained the park is a popular boating location because the shoreline is a shallow bank, which allows boat owners to leave their watercrafts directly in front of their camp sites for the duration of their stay. There
Dan and Jake with their Bass
are barbecues, covered picnic areas and toilet facilities. On Easter weekend 2016, an estimated 2,500 guests were checked in, making for a quintessential Australian camping experience complete with nightly fireworks. Another overnight stay option is Camp Moogerah, where they offer waterfront camping sites with boat access. Likewise, you can camp or caravan at School Camps QLD, which is another camping area popular with water skiing enthusiasts. The Moogerah area has several B&B’s, and picturesque homestead lodgings, such as Moogerah Lakehouse at End of the Line, and Milly’s Place on Lake Moogerah Road. Further downstream from Lake Moogerah, there are more camping grounds and hotel and motel-style accommodation at Aratula, Kalbar and Boonah townships. The lake is the biggest in the Scenic Rim, and arguably the most beautiful. The kids will love Lake Moogerah and surrounding areas. The facilities scream of freedom, with unmarked tent sites and boats directly in front of your camp site. It feels like days gone by, when freedom was not limited by rules and white lines. Lake Moogerah makes an ideal base for touring the Scenic Rim. The small unpopulated country towns, the local architecture and the quaint little timber weatherboard pubs of the region make for some interesting side trips. SAFETY. The lake is managed by Seqwater with dedicated rangers who regularly conduct on-water patrols in cooperation with Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) and the local police. They check for correct safety equipment, while boat operators undergo a license check. Seqwater Ranger, Glynn, explained that his role involves educating tourists about aspects in and around the waterways. He also points out that, since Seqwater began undertaking water patrols, there have been less on-water boating incidents occurring. For more details www.seqwater.com.au

BOAT JOURNEY
GOLD COAST TO BRISBANE By Nic Welch
A
journey along Southeast Queensland’s largest river, the Brisbane River, should be on every boatie’s bucket list.
You will be amazed by the sheer width of the river towards the mouth and the volume of commercial boating traffic - cargo ships, passenger cruise ships, naval war ships, tug boats, barges, trawlers, paddle steamers, CityCats, and cross river ferries - and the hundreds of recreational craft including yachts, cruisers, rowing skulls and sailing dinghies all enjoying the same waterways. From the mouth of the river to the Gateway Bridge, the river bank is lined with shipping terminals and heavy industry. Further upstream, the river banks become lined with heritage - listed buildings, waterfront mansions, and magnificent parks and gardens. Thirteen nautical miles upstream from the river mouth will see you pass under the Story Bridge, leading you right into the heart of the Brisbane CBD, which is quite spectacular at night. For most sailing yachts, this will be the end of the journey due to the 12.7m clearance of the Captain Cook Bridge where the South East Freeway passes across the river into the city. For power driven vessels, there are another 30 nautical miles of navigable waterway to explore upstream (dependent upon vessel draught) right up to the city of Ipswich, with sights to see around every bend of the river.
Getting there It is approximately 45nm from the Gold Coast Seaway to the mouth of the Brisbane River. If travelling by a power boat, at minimum, a 5m runabout is recommended as Moreton Bay regularly serves up 1m+ chop which can be very taxing on both passengers and the vessel itself. A common route is travelling up the Broadwater, then taking the main channel past Jacobs Well and Cabbage Tree Point, then cruising under the powerlines on the western side of Russel Island. Heading west at Karragarra Island will take you through the “W’s”, through Redland Bay past Coochiemudlo Island and then towards Peel Island. Peel Island is the 30nm mark from the Gold Coast, where most boaties will set anchor for the night before making the 15nm trip to the mouth of the Brisbane River the following morning. The quickest way from Peel Island is to head NW and pass between St Helena and Mud Islands, entering half way along the leads of the Brisbane River at the “Coffee Pots”. At this point you are in the main shipping channel and care must be taken not to impede the safe passage of ships underway. For trailerable boats, you can skip the 45nm journey by towing your vessel up the M1 and take the Lytton Rd exit, launching at the public Colmslie boat ramp on Col Gardner Drive. Alternatively, there is a public ramp on Fisherman Island at the Port of Brisbane. However, there is a 2.3m bridge clearance should you wish to take the Boat Passage shortcut into the river. 64
Refuelling locations There are several on-water fuel facilities available between the Gold Coast Seaway and Brisbane City – namely, Runaway Bay Marina, Horizon Shores Marina (Woongoolba), Rudy Maas Marina (Steiglitz), Raby Bay Marina, Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (24hr fuel, Manly Boat Harbour), and Rivergate Marina (next to the Gateway Bridge).
Anchorages Between the Gold Coast Seaway and Victoria Point there are countless places to set anchor for the night. The labyrinth of mangrove islands around Jumpinpin offer excellent protection from winds of just about any strength and direction. Tiger Mullet Channel is one of the most popular anchorages in the Jumpinpin area. Further north, the Bay Islands of Russel, Karragarra, Lamb and Macleay also offer great protection. Coochiemudlo Island provides good protection from northerlies. Between Victoria Point and the mouth of the Brisbane River, Peel Island is the best anchorage with Horseshoe Bay offering protection from northerlies and Lazaret Gutter offering protection from southerlies. Please note Peel Island should not be approached at night without local knowledge due to the amount of coral in the area. As an alternative anchorage to Peel Island, shelter can also be sought behind Green Island and St Helena Island, but protection can be somewhat limited at times. On the Brisbane River itself, you should always set anchor close to the river bank so as to not impede any boating traffic. Between the mouth of the River and the Gateway Bridges, the best option is to anchor in Aquarium Passage at Hemmant. Upstream of the Gateway Bridges, vessels generally anchor along the southern bank of the river at Bulimba Point along the Hamilton and Bulimba Reaches, and along the eastern bank of the Town Reach at Kangaroo Point. Arguably the most scenic anchorage in the Brisbane CBD is the northern bank of the river at Gardens Point, adjacent to the City Botanic Gardens, 200 metres downstream from the Captain Cook Bridge. From here you will have great views of the city skyline, the Kangaroo Point cliffs, and the Story Bridge. There is a floating pontoon managed by the Stamford Plaza at the northern end of the gardens, available for small tenders to tie up temporarily, offering convenient access to the city should you wish to shop for provisions, go shopping in the Queen St Mall, dine in a waterfront restaurant, or simply grab a coffee. It is worthwhile taking a stroll through the magnificent Botanic Gardens before crossing the Goodwill Bridge to visit the Queensland Maritime Museum and Southbank Parklands. Further upstream from the CBD there are plenty of places to anchor overnight. However, you should always anchor close to the banks of the river and always stay well clear from the ferry terminals. MAY - jul 2016
BOAT GOld coast
Dangers Between Eagle Farm and the mouth of the river, passenger cruise ships and cargo ships operate on a daily basis and often require most of the width of the river to manoeuvre when berthing at their terminals. Massive barges also operate as far as Teneriffe. CityCat and cross river ferries operate daily between Hamilton and the University of Queensland at St Lucia. A 100m exclusion zone exists around all the ferry terminals, sometimes marked by yellow buoys. If you are approaching an exclusion zone while a CityCat or cross river ferry is approaching or departing the terminal, you must wait until the ferry passes unless you are waved through by the master of the ferry. Rowing skulls, kayaks, outrigger canoes and small sailing craft operated by school and community groups frequently use the river. You should watch your wash when passing any of these vessels. Rowing skulls are particularly common at dawn and can be difficult to see in low light conditions. Kayaking adventure tours are also operated at night in the river. Power driven vessels should operate within the centre third of the river, leaving the outside third of the river for passive craft such as rowing skulls and kayaks. A Brisbane River Code of Conduct has been developed by Maritime Safety Queensland commercial operators and community groups as a guideline to the safe use of the river. It is recommended that you familiarise yourself with this code, which is available on the MSQ website (www.msq.qld.gov.au). A 15-knot speed limit for all vessels over 8m exists between the Story Bridge and William Jolly Bridge. A 2.5m tidal range in the river causes current up to 4 knots. Early morning fog is common in winter, and debris following heavy rain or flooding can cause a navigational hazard for all craft.
Fishing Fishing in the Brisbane River between the Gateway Bridge and the mouth can be fantastic, especially for bream, large snapper, mangrove jack, and threadfin salmon. Mulloway are often caught at night under the Gateway Bridge and bridges around the CBD. Bullsharks are a common catch on live mullet all throughout the river system. Fishing tapers off the further upstream you travel, with catfish prevalent in the turbid waters. Further out into Moreton Bay, pelagic fish, such as kingfish and mackerel, can be caught around the “Coffee Pots on lures, soft plastics and pilchards. Mud Island is also a renowned snapper hotspot, among other reef species, including sweetlips and parrotfish. boatgoldcoast.com. au

oating Partnerships is a unique motor yacht ownership program available through Runaway Bay Riviera and Belize dealer R Marine Crawley – a multi-award winning dealership that is totally devoted to sharing the love of the luxury life afloat.
“Each yacht is owned in a company with the shareholding of each owner equal to their shareholding in the yacht. In fact, some owners prefer to own multiple shares to increase their time on the water.
Boating Partnerships equally shares the purchase and monthly maintenance of a luxury Riviera or Belize between six likeminded people.
“Based on a one-sixth share, you will be able to enjoy up to 50 days per year onboard, plus have the ability to access additional days if available on a stand-by time basis.”
“The dream of turning weekends into holidays afloat in secluded bays or anchored off private beaches is now within your reach,” says dealer principal Ben Crawley. “Our Runaway Bay dealership is dedicated exclusively to the luxury Riviera and Belize yachting marques, and Boating Partnerships appeals equally to those whose passion is boating but their time is limited, and those who are drawn to the relaxing lifestyle that only boating offers.” The Crawley family has owned 11 different Rivieras since 1987 and cruises their luxury motor yachts extensively. The knowledge and passion of Ben Crawley and his dedicated team of marine professionals will bring immediate peace of mind to aspiring boating families, as well as to the seasoned offshore skipper. “In the current Boating Partnerships program, we have a fully optioned Riviera 6000 Sport Yacht with six shares available. Boating Partnerships yachts operate for a period of three years, with the option to extend to a four-year term if agreed by all shareholders,” says Ben.
HOW IT WORKS Ben says the Riviera yachts managed through the program will chase the endless summer each year, providing the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of two of Australia’s most fabled cruising destinations. “Boating Partnerships offers the opportunity to cruise the east coast of Australia from the Gold Coast north to the tropical Whitsundays Islands,” he says. “As a result of this unique cruising plan, opportunities for you to experience coastal passage between ports of call are available under the care and guidance of a seasoned captain. “This is a prime chance to learn more about boating, offshore seamanship and coastal navigation, along with the finer points of your motor yacht’s operating systems. “As the company owns the yacht outright, each shareholder’s investment is protected by equity in the yacht.
When the ownership period has lapsed, the yacht is then marketed by R Marine Crawley at an agreed value and the proceeds are returned to the shareholders. “In the event that a shareholder wishes to divest their shareholding earlier than the ownership period, R Marine Crawley can also assist with the sale of individual shares based on an agreed market value of the yacht at the time of the share sale.” Boating Partnerships offer a professional crew to maintain yachts in prime condition on a weekly basis during the ownership period, and will deliver the vessel to the Whitsundays at times agreed by the owners. The annual maintenance, slipping and berthing costs are affordably shared between the yacht’s owners. “Boating Partnerships open an exciting new world of family fun and adventure, allowing you to focus on the enjoyment of boating and share this with those who mean the most to you,” says Ben. “With Boat Partnerships, you can enjoy a whole new lifestyle and share your experiences with your family, friends and business colleagues.” If you would like further information on the unique luxury motor yacht ownership program Boating Partnerships, please call R Marine Crawley at Shop 1A, Runaway Bay Marina, Queensland, phone +61 7 5529 5007 or email info@rmarinecrawley.com.au.

QUICK ANDRELIABLE FINANCE “We have been working diligently on expanding our business, introducers, experience and relationships with financiers. Sorry we have not touched base in a while.” This is the introductory statement of Marcus Millard, director of Millard Financial. Now a team of three people with a collective experience of decades in the banking and financial industry, Millard Financial are now settling well over half a million dollars a month with their partners and their relationships. “For Millard Financial, to get the job done right the first time for clients and dealers is as strong as anyone in the market,” Marcus states confidently. lender fits your needs. “We have every asset lender on the market as our partner, and we know, after minutes with you or on the phone, where your business will be welcomed the first time. Don’t go to your bank and get runthrough the ringer for a week or two, only to be told ‘no’. We will get the job done within a day or two, so you can go on with your life and take delivery of your car, commercial vehicle, truck, bike, boat or machinery,” advises Marcus. Marcus Millard is not new to marine and finance industries. He was born into a marine manufacturer sales family, growing up and working on the marinas of Pittwater in Sydney from the age of 12. He started out running fuel wharfs and hire boat companies, and moved on to selling on the weekends for franchise dealers. He then pursued a career in automotive design engineering with the likes of BMW in Germany and Mitsubishi in Japan. From here Marcus moved back to his roots working in the local marine manufacturer brokerages. Once settling into the Gold Coast way of life, Marcus took particular interest in the finance aspect of the industry. After working with a multi-franchised dealer on the Gold Coast as a finance associate, Marcus left the company to start his own. He started Millard
Financial. His diverse automotive and marine sales experiences along with the exposure to marine and automotive finance has positioned Marcus within the industry to offer a full finance service. This is Marcus’ personal invitation to you:
“If you are looking for finance please keep Millard Financial in the front of your mind. I invite you all to touch base with me for any of your lending needs. I look forward to being of help in the near future.”
