Feedlot Friends

We at Powerline Genetics are very passionate about what we do, and we like to surround ourselves with people who understand that passion. Relationships are the key to any business’ success, and our network with some of the best cattle feeders in our region certainly brings value to our program. We work directly with Norm and Jason Timmerman of NA Timmerman, Inc, Jason Anderson at Anderson Livestock, and George and Kelly Seward of Schramm Feedlot. With over 150,000 head capacity, these feedyards are strategically located in Nebraska, Kansas, and Colorado. These operations have access to the best feedstuffs available, preferred environment, logistical coordination to multiple packer locations, and availability to the Power Genetics grid.

Customer Highlight

Greg and Rita Marintzer have been purchasing bulls from Powerline for over a decade, and they don’t shy away from the top end. This year they purchased JHW PLG Eagle Eye 232, who was for sure a fan favorite. Last year, they procured two Franchise sons out of our January sale. The Marintzers market their feeder cattle through the local barn annually in the fall, and the past two years those cattle have been fed at NA Timmerman. The kill data on their cattle is a true testiment to how and why the program works.

Let Powerline assist you in getting to know these great cattle feeding operations. We can discuss feedyard options, financing possibilities, and even direct placement for your cattle. Contact Jeff for more information on cattle feeding and placement opportunities.

Meyring Cattle Co,

Panhandle Multipliers

Jay and Shauna Meyring relocated from Colorado to the western Sandhills in Alliance after graduating from Colorado State University. The couple has three children, Jayce, Jayda and Seth, who are all active in the day to day at the ranch. Jay’s parents, Jerry and Nancy, live right around the corner and continue to work with the family. The operaton consists of a spring calving herd, fall calving herd, as well as a commercial feedlot, and row crop ground. Jay and Shauna feed cattle that they raise as well as cattle from their bull customers, and then market them through the Power Genetics grid. The Meyrings AI calves come primarily from mid-February with the replacement heifers, through the month of March. Their bulls make up a large percent of the cattle offered in the March Arapahoe sale.

Heath Wills

Heath and Courtney Wills are also based out of Alliance, NE, and they have been raising bulls for the Powerline program for close to 20 years. They are the parents of four girls, Rozlyn, Railey, Lexey and Laney, who definetly keep them busy! The Wills’ operation not only raises seedstock, but also consists of a commercial feedlot that specializes in the finishing of natural cattle as well as crop and hay ground. They have been utlilizing AI and embryo transfer for several years, as well as purchasing AI quality bulls to run with their cows. A recent such purchase was TJ Big Easy. His first progeny was marketed this past sale season, and 14 sons average $5,700. The Big Easy calves offer calving ease, performance, structural correctness, shape, and have a great look. They have really been a nice addition to the program. For the Wills family, a vacation is going to the Box Butte County Fair and showing cattle. They raise their own steers and heifers for 4-H, and the girls take a whole string to town. These girls know how to work and have fun doing it.

Recently, Jay and Shauna decided to take their operation to the next step geneticly and have begun utilitzing embryo transfer. The family enjoys attending and competing at livestock shows, athletic events, livestock judging contests and rodeos when they aren’t at the ranch.

Ultrasound Data

The new trend in the seedstock and livestock marketing world is the greater emphasis being placed on Genomically Enhanced EPDs over actual physical data. Primarily, we are seeing this when it comes to utlrasounding bulls. Our stance is yes, but no. The “numbers” from the GE EPDs are reliable, but we “want to know” what is under that hide. There is a big difference between a bull with a 12 inch ribeye, and one with an 18 inch ribeye. We can also use the data to get a more accurate assessment on “true” muscle and just how much cover an animal is carrying. We consider ultrasound data to be one more tool to use in the selection process to make sure you are purchasing an animal that is the right fit for your operation based on your end goals.

Yearling Weight in Selection

Why is yearling weight such an important value in the selection process? On an individual basis, a bull’s yearling weight demonstrates his own performance ability. Sometimes we see bulls with smaller weaning weights that are due to factors outside of their genetics such as a poor receipt, being a twin, out of a first calf heifer, etc. Therefore, it is important to study the spread from a bull prospect’s weaning weight to his yearling weight. The greater the difference, the more true performance the bull possesses. Yearling weights are also an indicator of muture cow size in terms of pounds. Some customers look at this value to get a better idea of the size that can be passed on to a bull’s offspring because many of our buyers are retaining females out of the bulls we sell them.
