INDIAN TWIN / 1908 Specialized Indian racing machines in 1905 were visibly different from the catalog offerings. The new V-twin engine was first offered to the public in racing form in 1908. The E.J. Cole ‘monkey on a stick’ 1908 Indian Twin-Cylinder racer retains its original parts, while remaining in unrestored condition. Displayed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

CYCLONE BOARD TRACK RACER - MCQUEEN / 1915 With a production run lasting only three years, the Joerns Cyclone has generated more excitement in the public’s mind than any other make, which began with its debut in 1913, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and has never let up. The Cyclone’s technical specification made it the most advanced motorcycle engine built in America, and while the company built road machines, it’s racing that Cyclone is remembered for. The E.J. Cole 1915 Cyclone was restored by Stephen Wright, author of the American Racer books. Cole purchased this Cyclone at the Steve McQueen Estate Auction at Las Vegas’ Imperial Palace in November 1984. This combination of Steve McQueen and Cyclone makes it one of the most, if not the most, interesting motorcycles owned by the King of Cool.

IMPERIAL SINGLE / 1910 In 1901 New Imperial made their first motorcycle. The engine was mounted forward of the handlebars with a leather belt driving the front wheel. It did not sell well. In 1910 a more conventional design went into production using a 293cc JAP engine. This 1910 Imperial is in restored condition. Displayed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

CROCKER V-TWIN BIG TANK / 1942 Crocker began as a builder of successful speedway racers in 1933. Designed during 1935, the Crocker Big Twin road model was intended as a durable and powerful, yet fast and nimble machine. Production ceased after a small run in 1942. Many collectors consider the short lived but valued Crocker motorcycle as the epitome of prewar American motorcycles. This 1942 ‘Big Tank’ Crocker was restored by Richard Morris. Given its age and life of riding, this is a remarkably original bike. As Richard states: "It’s a fantastic machine, and really fast.”

READING STANDARD SINGLE / 1913 Manufactured in Reading, Pennsylvania, Reading Standard started offering motorcycles in 1903 and by 1906 was producing a flathead single of its own design—the American motorcycle industry’s first side valve. This 1913 Reading shows with an older restoration.

FLYING MERKEL BOARD TRACK RACER / 1911 Merkel began production of his motorcycle in 1902. Factory advertising in 1909 referred to it as the ‘Flying Merkel,’ but a logo by that name didn’t appear until 1911, and by then they’d truly flown, with Fred Whittler averaging 74 MPH over 50 miles on a Los Angeles board track. This 1911 Flying Merkel board track racer is in remarkable, original condition, and is one of the gems of the E.J. Cole collection. Displayed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

MINNEAPOLIS TWIN TWO SPEED / 1913 The Minneapolis motorcycle was introduced in 1908. The 1913 Minneapolis catalog stated: “We Built them Right in 1912 – Then Bettered them for 1913. We set the pace for ourselves!” This 1913 Minneapolis Model S-2 De Luxe Twin remains in fantastic original paint condition. It is a true pioneer of multi-speed motorcycling, with a proper 2-speed countershaft gearbox. Displayed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON WLA / 1942 First produced in 1937 the Harley-Davidson 45" model became the WLA in 1942 and was the motorcycle of choice for the US military. Many were also sent to our allies under the Lend-Lease program. A nicely restored example of this collectible model.

MARSH METZ SINGLE / 1910 The Metz and Marsh motorcycle companies combined in 1905, creating Marsh-Metz. Also known as MM, the company was located in Brockton, Massachusetts. During its production run through 1912 MM produced excellent road and racing machines. This example of the 1910 Marsh Metz Single is in restored condition.

ACE FOUR CYLINDER / 1920 William and Thomas Henderson founded the Henderson motorcycle in Detroit in 1912, and immediately established an amazing reputation as a durable, fast, and beautifully built machine. After Bill Henderson secured financing for his new project, it only took a few months before the Ace was born. This 1920 Ace Four bears the earliest Ace serial number known, and is an older restoration.

For the last 50 years, E.J. Cole has fed his passion for antique motorcycles by collecting some of the best examples of American–made machines ranging from 1903 to 1991. In that time, he has amassed what many motorcycle enthusiasts agree is a true American Treasure. Today, the E.J. Cole collection includes more than 220 motorcycles—one of the finest and most diverse single collections in America.

A number of Cole’s motorcycles have been proudly displayed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and the National Motorcycle Museum. These motorcycles will be gathered up and presented for the Mecum Auction in Las Vegas, but Cole is hopeful the new owners will lend, as he has often done, their newly acquired antique motorcycle to one of the fine motorcycle museums around the United States.
