DUSTED COAST As summer days grow shorter, we follow the light to the Southern Hemisphere in search of sun faded knits and washed down wovens, creating an unpressed travel-worn look that feels like it has spent days on sunny coastlines. Artwork by Melbourne-based ANP Artist Melissa Grisancich adds elements inspired by landscapes and old botanicals, while textures, slubs and heathers add dimension and give an overall vintage vibe.

MELISSA GRISANCICH Born in 1987, Melissa Grisancich, a Melbourne-based artist was surrounded by religious imagery and icons growing up, and was taught the importance of recycling and reusing things from a young age. These details helped form the style and choice of materials in her work. From an early age Melissa showed a strong aptitude for art; teaching herself to draw, make handmade objects, sew and paint. By 7 years old she could be found tinkering with a hammer and nails, creating objects from wood, which she would then paint and display in the family home. Melissa maintains a firm ethos of using found or recycled objects, materials and surfaces and insists on making her works entirely “by hand”. Melissa’s style has been described as “… pop meets Frida Kahlo” and indeed like Kahlo, Melissa’s work is very personal and sometimes autobiographical. Her work reflects her interest in street art, iconography, symbolism, imagery from old children’s books, vintage ephemera and comics. Melissa started exhibiting her works around Australia at 18 years of age and began her studio practice after college where she studied fine art and printmaking. Her first solo show was at the Brunswick Street Gallery in Melbourne, in 2011. Melissa is very happy to be managing the RVCA/ANP gallery in Melbourne while continuing to paint and create in her studio at the gallery.

ALEX MATUS C O L L E C T I O N
“My inspiration for the Women’s Fall 17 line was the healing and freeing aspect of traveling through and living in Bishop near the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California. It is a hidden gem on the East Side and one of the last bastions where a dirtbag can still be a dirtbag.” A percentage of the proceeds from Alex Matus’ art pieces in the Fall’17 collection will benefit Access Fund, an organization that protects climbing access and the integrity of America’s outdoor climbing areas.

“In a time when gender lines are more blurred than ever and the need to be defined as either male or female is dissipating, we are inspired to explore the idea of the undefined. Clothing is used as a form of self-expression, with this collection we intend to bridge the gap and provide a Neutral platform for people to do just that. We have taken a minimalistic approach, with comfort and wearability at the forefront. Using soft hand fabrics, heavy laundering and indigo dyes to create worn in timeless pieces. With subtle hints of workwear and utilitarian styling, each piece is designed for versatility, to look good and wear well on anyone and allow the wearer to style their own way.

STEVE POWERS Stephen Powers was born and raised in Philadelphia. Known by his graffiti name ESPO, he moved to New York City in 1994, working as a magazine publisher and graffiti writer before opening his studio in 1999. That year, Powers stopped writing graffiti and tending bar to dedicate himself to being a full-time artist. His work has been shown at Venice and Liverpool Biennials, as well as numerous shows (TO BE FAIR: 2.75 shows) at Deitch Projects. Powers was a Fulbright scholar in 2007. He used the grant to paint in the streets of Dublin and Belfast. His work in Belfast’s Lower Shankill area was inspired by the area’s political murals; Powers told the New York Times that he was “taking the form of the murals, which are powerful for all the wrong reasons, and trying to retain some of the power and use it in a really good way.”
