A Look Back Ahh, 2012. All the momentum and changes in the last few years caused BobcatFans to reflect on the past. Back in February 2008, we released an issue concerning the ASG’s push for FBS football. No matter how badly die hard alumni wanted to make the move to FBS a reality, it was clear if a move of that magnitude was going to happen: it would be at the hands of the student body. The vote passed with a resounding 80% in favor and the ground work began immediately. There’s nothing like being there from the beginning.

Getting High SMTX keeps growing, which means more buildings, more businesses and especially more fun. Bobcat Nation Sports Bar and Grill is a new sports bar opening its doors in the shopping center at LBJ and Sessom. The bar and grill will feature Bobcat pride, speciality drinks and tasty eats. Replacing Craig O’s Pizza (in the shopping center across from the outlets) is Cody’s Bistro & Lounge, a new upscale restaurant & bar catering to the more “mature” San Marcos resident. And finally, The Veranda is not opening on the Square, it is opening above it. You can party on top of Harper’s Hall this September. The views are amazing and you can see in any direction for miles. In legal trouble?

Better call Billy Q. How can someone be arrested for possessing drug paraphernalia when those items are commonly sold in many stores? A.The legal definition of drug para-

phernalia is quite lengthy. Simply put, it is something used to make illegal substances, or most frequently, to introduce illegal substances into the body. Pipes, for example, are sold for smoking tobacco, not marijuana, per se. What makes a legal item illegal paraphernalia is when the item becomes coupled with an illegal substance. In the case of a legal pipe being considered drug paraphernalia, it is alleged to have been used to smoke an illegal drug and not a legal tobacco product.

Deli-cious Tex-Mexicans I like to think I know a lot about the San Marcos food scene. I try to keep on top of all the cool new places and pay tribute to the established spots that have been around for years. As such, I was shocked to see how a place like Deli-cioso went under my radar for so long. With outstanding tacos, delicious tortas, salsas that will burn with flavor (as well as heat) and tortilla soup so good you will forsake all others; bow down to the new taste of Mexican food in San Marcos. Since it opened last February, Deli-cioso has been wowing students and locals alike with its authentic and affordable tacos, sandwiches and soups. Coupled with their fantastic salsa, including a sweet and spicy habanero and a sweat inducing salsa made from ghost chilies, Deli-cioso is a place that all San Marcos residents should put on their regular rotation. 700 N. Taco Combo

For a paltry $7 you can pick yourself up a taco combo with three tacos, a side of chips or beans, and a can of soda. I opted for a barbacoa taco, a fried avocado taco, and blackened fish taco. The fish was flaky and flavorful, and the avocado was crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, topped with house-made queso fresco. The barbacoa taco was also good, and by good I mean AWESOME.

Tortilla Soup

Think of the best tortilla soup you have ever had. Now take that soup, and make it fifty times better. After you’ve done that, it still won’t be nearly as good as the soup at Deli-cioso: flavorful, spicy, smoky, meaty, and of course delicious.

Torta Cubana

Juicy, salty, savory, flavorful: these are all things a good Cuban sandwich should be. Deli-cioso’s take on the classic is all this and more. Sandwiched in a pillowy bolillo roll you’ll find succulent ham, tender carnitas, sour pickles, and good sharp mustard. Served up with your choice of papas fritas, tostada chips or beans. Brewery- Thirsty Planet Goats are famous for their ability to eat just about anything. This explains why Thirsty Planet created a brew that’s good enough to wash down just about any meal. This medium bodied Amber Ale has just enough hops to cut through the light malty sweetness and finishes clean and bitter. It’s a very balanced beer; just the right amount of hops to malt, and feels very crisp. This perfect sipping beer is a great companion to any hot summer day. ABV- 5.8%

Oktoberfest Saint Arnold’s Brewing Co.

I have come to expect great things from Saint Arnold’s. All of their previous beers I’ve tried have been wonderful, and as such, I was surprised when I first tried their Oktoberfest. It comes out light on hops and malt, and doesn’t really hold the tastes of autumn that you would expect from an Oktoberfest style beer. A bit too sour at the start, a bit too weak at the finish, a rare mediocre beer from an exceptional brewery. ABV- 5.50%

Rally with Randy Rogers Randy Rogers breaks down his new album, his San Marcos roots, college football and why choosing to be a Bobcat was one of the best decisions of his life. Can you tell us a little about how the band got started? What are your roots here in San Marcos?

to the FBS. When you were in college here did you attend the football games and are you a college football fan?

Randy: It all happened at Cheatham Street. I was doing Open Mic Night at Cheatham St. on Wednesdays and for the Singer/ Songwriter Circle. Then Kent [Finlay] told me that if I could get my shit together then I could get a gig on Tuesday nights. If I could get a band together then I could have Tuesday nights. October 3rd, 2000 was the first Randy Rogers Band gig at Cheatham St.

Randy: I am a football fan and I did make it to several games while I was there and I think it’s great, I think it’s great for the university. I know that joining the WAC and getting that kind of national exposure playing those big teams is going to definitely help the recruiting classes, you know. I would like to speak to that, my experience there in San Marcos was life changing, it was the best decision I ever made to go to school in San Marcos, so I’ll do what I can from a musicians level to spread the word about the university and how much I respect it. I believe the athletics department and the football program are going to do great things for spreading the word about how great the university is.

Were you a student at Texas State University at that time? Randy: I was a senior, a Public Relations Major in the School of Mass Communications and I finished my degree. Since moving on from San Marcos your career has taken off and your name is pretty big, but SMTX and Texas State have also grown and the Bobcats are now moving up

Part of what makes the college football experience so great is enjoying the weather with some good country music and tailgating. What were some

of your favorite tailgating memories? Randy: We would hang in the parking lot before the football games. I don’t know how it is now, but back then you could bring kegs, so we would start partying with a keg in the parking lot. I mean, we had a great time going to school there man, and I can’t wait to get back to some games this year. It’s been two years since you released your hit album Burning the Day. Tell us a little about how the new album, Trouble, featuring your latest single “One More Sad Song,” which doesn’t sound like the happiest list of titles, represents where the band is at today? Randy: I feel like albums are just little pictures and snap shots of where we’re at during that time, so most of my song writing is pretty autobiographical. It’s pretty much what we have learned over the past couple years, we put into the records that we make. Trouble is no exception. I think this

record has more of a light hearted feel at times, but there are party songs on this record that maybe we haven’t included as much in our repertoire. There’s some feel good and funny, up tempo and light types of songs, then there are some pretty deep emotional, real things that we have been through over the past couple years. It’s all real man. We have suffered some hardships and some loss of life with family members through the making of this record. There are just a lot of real life emotional things happening to all of us during this time. You have a show scheduled at Whitewater in early September. Is there any chance we will get to see you play around SMTX in the near future? Randy: I always sneak into San Marcos under the radar…go by Cheatham St. and say hi to Kent and hit the Square. So, I do come back to town quite often and you will probably see me playing at Cheatham St. sometime in the fall and I’ll see you at a game!

X’s & O’s of the Texas State Women’s Football Clinic (And we don’t mean hugs and kisses)

An interesting phenomenon occurs every fall; the majority of men across America will retire to their “man cave” all weekend to hibernate in a fixed gaze upon their television screens. This occurrence will leave their significant others in somewhat of a predicament, do they attempt to join in on the festivities or do they take the opportunity for some girl time of their own? Unfortunately, many men assume that they exert some level of higher intelligence surrounding the pig skin while women have a certain knack for the 7 layer dip. Men either believe that women are not that interested in the sport or are just too lazy to try to explain things mid-game. On behalf of the male sex, the Texas State football team and coaches are doing something to change things. Recently, our football program, with the help of McNabb & Co. Real Estate Services, Little Guys Movers and The University Bookstore hosted the Women’s Football Clinic, a fundraiser for the Veterans Ticket Foundation. With the help of a little spandex and Chardonnay, the ladies of San Marcos got a chance to bypass their man and learn the game first hand from our Bobcat coaches and players. It began with a pre-game warm up that included a little mingling. During the equipment demonstration, the women were “forced” to gaze at some of the football players covered in not much more than their football pants. After a few shouts of approval, the women broke into groups and got instructed in four categories: offense, defense, strength training and field practice. At each session the ladies were given a short tutorial by the coaching staff and then had the opportunity to drill coaches with questions of their own. Some of the questions were so in-depth and intelligent that the coaches were caught a little surprised and unprepared. A few of the attendees might want to reconsider a career in sports broadcasting. After watching some of our strapping football players perform a few weight lifting demonstrations, the real fun began. The girls got a chance to step onto the field and play a little pickup game of their own. High heels flew off as they ran to the field to take their stance; dresses and skirts didn’t pose a threat to their toughness. The action was so intense that some of the football players had to step out of the way at times. The Women’s Football Clinic is something that many San Marcos women look forward to every year, some for ulterior motives, but it turns out that women have a much higher appreciation for the game than most men realize. They were able to teach their husbands a thing or two when they went home. Some men around town might be making their own bean dip this year.

Occupation: Chimy’s Cerveceria/Student Favorite Sports: Softball, Baseball, Football & Volleyball Favorite Football Position: QB Football History: Kelsey was raised in Sulphur Springs, TX, a small town that loves football and won state during her senior year (She went to all the games). Her dad played football in high school and would watch games on TV during the weekends. Sometimes he would try to explain the nuances of the game, but according to Kelsey, it would go in one ear and out the other. Biggest highlight of the clinic? “Throwing a couple touchdown passes to my friend Regan.” What was your favorite session of the football clinic? “The last session, when we got to run plays and be on the field and hang out, to experience the game from a different perspective.” What was the most interesting thing you learned? “The new rules that are being implemented this season, along with everything the players have to do, their workouts and stuff.” What is something that you could teach your male friends after attending the clinic? “Kickoffs used to be from the 30, but now they are from the 35 yard line…and for punts the players on offense can’t get as close to the return man because of safety reasons this year. They are trying to prevent concussions…they are trying to make things safer in the long run.” Why would you recommend the clinic to your friends? “It’s just a good learning experience, to know your school and know what’s going on with your team. If you’re with a group of guys, it’s just fun to say something that they would not expect from a girl. It was a fun thing to do…it’s a fun way to learn about sports.”

The Power Clean

Get Ripped

With Shawn Onyechi As football season moves into full gear, you can amp up your workout routine with a classic lift that is used by athletes all across the board. Speed and power are essential in all sports, but explosiveness is crucial to a football playerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to have success on the field. The power clean involves mastery of its proper technique, but once achieved, it increases power throughout your whole body, especially in your hips. The basic form of the power clean can also be adjusted or combined into other exercises. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s break down the power clean with some help from body builder Shawn Onyechi. Note: Flexibility is a key variable for the power clean, proper warm-ups and stretching should be done before hand.

The Technique 1. Start with a parallel stance.

Your hands and feet should be

about shoulders width apart.

2. Use the hook grip (Fingers around the thumbs) 3. Knees should be kept at a 90 degree angle.

Keep your head and chest up, shoulder blades back, and back straight.

4. The first pull involves slowly lifting the bar from the floor, keeping the arms straight and the bar close to your body.

5. The second pull is an explosion from the hips.

Shawn shrugs with his legs and feet extended, and then he sinks his hips for the catch. It is important to keep your arms straight.

6. For the catch, keep your hands open and elbows up and in. Rest the bar on your shoulders next to your throat.

The House that Grice Built

After overseeing the athletic facility projects since 2003, Grice took a new position at the University of North Texas in late August

A native of Mississippi, Derek Grice came to Texas State in 2003 at the dawn of a new era. His first assignment was to replace SWT signage with the new Texas State logo, but that was only the beginning. Grice oversaw the construction of the baseball and softball fields, the track facility, the soccer facility, the West Side Complex and now the North Side End Zone Complex. That adds up to about 70 million dollars in construction costs that he was accountable for. As Asst. Athletics Director of Facilities and Game Day Operations, Grice has made it his goal to provide athletes and fans with facilities they can take pride in and find an identity in. Thanks to Grice, Bobcat fans really do have home field advantage.

The bobcat NEW Stadium August was a busy month for the Texas State Athletic Department and their force of construction workers. The completion of the North Side Complex means much more to the university than simply having a larger stadium with more seating; it’s about creating an identity. “For a lot of people, their only connection with the university might be the day they come sit in the stands and watch a game. I think it creates pride, not only for the athletes, but for the fans,” says Derek Grice, Asst. Athletics Director of Facilities and Game Day Operations. Derek went over four key elements that are crucial to building a new facility: fan friendly, functionality, expandability and player development. The new addition has succeeded in all categories. If fans are hungry for the new concessions from Hays Co. BBQ or Marble Slab, they won’t miss any action thanks to television screens scattered throughout the complex. Our Track and Field team now has a place to call home that includes new coaches’ offices, a weight room and showers. In regards to expandability, Grice says, “I believe that this stadium is not done growing. I couldn’t give you a time frame, but I think it depends on fan support and our program, but there is definitely room to expand.” At this time (mid-August) the finishing touches are in progress, which are the most crucial to Grice and others. The stadium points to the future, but it remembers the past. Fans and students will encounter “special moments” of Bobcat history on the walls and pillars while they experience some history of their own. The complex also houses the new Strutter Museum that pays tribute to a special part of Texas State history. On the outside, the beautiful stadium stands proud, fully manicured to connect the old with the new, the past with the present. It was never about building a stadium; it’s about building a legacy.

re not always adjectives you would use to describe the game of football, but this year, the Texas State Bobcats are doing things in style, their style. The motto for their inaugural season at the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) level is a play on the acronym: Football Bobcat Style. There are multiple ways to define style. In a general sense, style is simply the manner you go about something, but style is commonly used in reference to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s particular fashion sense. Fashion is all about confidence; it is an outward representation of pride in who you are within. Everyone wants to walk into a full room feeling good about themselves. This season, the Bobcats finally got invited to the show. This is not a transition year for the Bobcats, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an introduction year. The team has been working incredibly hard during the offseason, getting bigger, stronger and faster for FBS competition. Our players are confident that they are ready for the next level. Strutters The Texas State Strutters are not your typical dance team. The core of a Strutter goes much deeper than a pair of boots and a cute, matching cowboy hat. Being a Strutter is more like being a member of a family, a family that you are always a part of; once a Strutter, always a Strutter is the just of it. This is best experienced when the Strutters run out onto the football field and let out the Strutter Yell accompanied by former Strutters sitting in the stands.

Their halftime kicks are only scratching the surface of what our Stutters do year round. Their practice schedule runs essentially year round, there is really no off season when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a Strutter. They have to be prepared for football season, basketball season, their own spring show and special appearances around the country and even the world. Our Strutters are world famous; they have performed in over twenty five different countries around the world. This year, the Strutters will travel to New York, NY to perform for the second time in the Macyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Thanksgiving Day Parade. On top of all the dancing, the team does their part to give back through organizations like Habitat for Humanity. Last year they were able to raise money for soldiers through T-shirt sales. These beautiful ladies were happy to use their moves on and off the field to help our football team make a big move of their own.

The Unicycle Football League (UFL) Kicks of their 8th season this year and promises to be the craziest, toughest and most enjoyable show to ever occur on one wheel. Player: Mississippi Sunset of Los Bierdos

aybe you have heard of the creative alternative to traditional football that was born right here in San Marcos, Texas. Unicycle football, yes, you read correctly, really exists. With six established teams in San Marcos and another two up in Austin, the UFL is not heading anywhere but up. It all began back in 2007 when Marcus Garland was teaching a juggling class on his unicycle and had the crazy idea of tossing a football into the mix. “Basically, it is pretty much the most kick ass sport in existence,” says Marcus, who will be taking a sabbatical this year in Korea. The UFL is a story of eager members attempting to learn the possibilities of what can be accomplished on top of one wheel. According to Lee (AKA Dickey Smallworth) there are now players who can kickoff, punt, and make field goals all while riding a unicycle. To break it down, the game is played Flackle style, meaning that you can either grab a player’s flag or tackle them from a unicycle. Currently the game is played in a five on five format with a center, quarter #BobcatFans

back, two wide receivers and half back/tight end option (It might be changed to 6 on 6 this year). A player may only carry out a play while on a unicycle. Hopping off your unicycle with the ball means you are “down.” The games are played in four quarters with a halftime included, similar to traditional football. Halftime is almost as fun as the game itself with entertainment from local bands and the ever so popular Unibrawdzs. Usually games are judged by two referees and line judges. One of the referees, Carlton Pride, is a former NFL and CFL football player who doubles as a mentor for the league. A touchdown is worth six points and after a touchdown has been made the team has the option to kick a field goal from the unicycle. It just doesn’t get more interesting, or entertaining than that. Or does it? The field goal is worth a total of two points. Going for a one-point conversion is also an alternative option following a team’s touchdown. To kick off the game, a unicycle jousting takes place, kicking the tradition of a coin toss to the curb.

The Card System: Better not get a Pink Card. There is an unofficial definition for this card and it rhymes with wussie. Yellow Card: Warning, holding, block in the back Red Card: Anything “wildly illegal,” tackle off the unicycle Pink Card: Excessive whining, self sacks (falling off the bike), or multiple pass drops

The game is played Flackle style, meaning that you can either grab a player’s flag or make them eat asphalt. Like in every major competitive sport, there must be a champion. The UFL incorporates a playoff system that culminates to the Stouper Bowl. No, that is not a typo, the Stouper Bowl is the Super Bowl of the UFL and last year the Hot Dogs reigned as champions. This season, due to some movement in free agency, the Hot Dogs better watch out for the Unicychos. To date, there have been no major injuries to occur in seven years of asphalt clashing. All players are required to wear helmets, but most players will fit themselves with elbow pads, knees pads and shin guards as well. Some of the veteran badasses will ride with only the standard helmet and will sometimes suffer the consequences (but that’s what makes them badass).

You will not want to miss out on any of the action this season. With their new field located at the San Marcos Activity Center right off Hopkins, there will be plenty of room to experience the action for yourself. Best of all, anyone can play! Those under the age of eighteen will just need to fill out a waiver before getting started. Any UFL veteran will be happy to help you hone up some mad unicycle skills. Really, with the teams help, it is likely you will turn into unicycle greatness. The league has plenty of unicycles to ride so you don’t have to worry about how you will ever fit unicycle shopping into your schedule. Community support is what makes activities and sports leagues such as the UFL possible, so support the local bike shops, such as Ozone Bikes and The Hub.

Unibrawdz & Unibroz The Unibrawdz (who will be adding males for the first time this season) are the heart, soul and liver of the UFL, because these girls can party with the best of them. Along with creating excitement and entertainment along the sidelines, they play a major role in fundraising for the league. That’s not all, these Unibrawdz will physically use their bodies to create a goal post for extra points and field goals (According to the rules, if one gets hit in the head the field goal counts, a rule they came up with themselves.) The Unibrawdz are as much fun to watch as the players.

TXST Women’s Golf By Chris Lehman

When most nine year old girls were getting toys, Krista Puisite and her sister were unwrapping golf clubs on Christmas morning. Although Krista wasn’t too pleased at first, it didn’t take long for her to realize that she had a special gift for the sport. Krista was born and raised in Latvia, but knew that she wanted to go to college over in the US. It was at a golf tournament down in Florida that our women’s golf coach, Mike Akers, got to meet Krista, and it’s a good thing he did. Krista has played a major role in turning our women’s golf team into a national competitor. Krista never made an official visit to Texas State before arriving for her freshman year (It’s a bit of a drive from Latvia), so she imagined Texas as being some big, vast desert. To her surprise, Krista discovered a beautiful campus, the river and plenty of fun things to do around San Antonio and Austin. She also discovered that people in Texas are a bit more outgoing than she was accustomed to. Krista is now entering her senior year at Texas State, and there is not much left for her to accomplish. The women’s golf team will have to try to top last year’s phenomenal season that included winning the BYU Tournament and a tournament in Miami. One of Krista’s favorite moments was winning the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate that is hosted here at Texas State. On top of being a standout athlete, Krista has maintained a 3.9 GPA during her time in college. Golf never stops for Krista. Just this summer, she won the Latvian Amateur Championship and hopes to win the Latvian Open for the second year in a row. Her biggest goal this season is to help lead the team to nationals for the first time.
