RIVER ETIQUETTE FOR DUMMIES The San Marcos River is about to see a lot more action. Beware, there are a whole lot of douchebags out there. But not worries, we’ve prepared a no nonsense guide to help you navigate your way to becoming a better person on of the river. DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS RIVERS: Show some respect for the environment or cough up the dough ‘cause the minimum fines for littering are $250 in the city’s river and parks. The maximum penalty is public hanging. Not worth it. DO DISPOSE OF TRASH PROPERLY: Bring a mesh bag to dump your empties in or ask your tubbing outfitter to provide you with one. DO SLATHER SUNSCREEN (REPEAT): Along with an inner tube bring a tube of sunscreen so you can reapply it every hour or risk being burnt to a crisp and hating life the next day... or two... or three.

Don’t count on the SPF in your makeup to prevent sunburn. It won’t, hot stuff. Do keep a lid on it: secure cooler lids so shit doesn’t spill out. You won’t believe how often this advise is not followed. Do place necessities in a plastic bag. Don’t assume they won’t get wet (or stolen). And don’t steal either! Don’t bring anything you don’t mind losing. Remember Shit Happens! Don’t underestimate the strength of the current. Not joking... Do bring cash: leave the debit/credit cards at home. Don’t bring glass: it’s illegal and a total buzzkill if someone steps on it. Don’t tie tubes together.

Sure, you don’t want to lose track of your friends, but you run the risk flipping over and being stuck underwater together – and possibly the ER. Instead, hold on to each other...oh baby! Do bring a photo ID: your driver’s license is used as collateral at most tube rental companies. Don’t monopolize the tunes: Hey jackass with the loudest sound system on the water, have a playlist with variety, or feel the wrath of T-Swift haters. Do have someone in your group stay sober for the drive home: this message brought to you by Captain Obvious. Don’t bring Styrofoam products, including coolers, cups and sex toys...sorry, toys... that would be weird. Don’t text while tubing, talk to the people around you. If you can’t disconnect for three hours you have issues.

Do help people out: helping someone inflate a tube, giving them a hand out of the water, a reminder to fix their top or a lift back into their tube is plain common courtesy, and it may work better than Tinder. Don’t try to catch Water Moccasins, they don’t make good pets. Don’t berate law enforcement. They’ve been in the heat all day dealing with drunk people. They might just give you a well deserved ass beating. Don’t illegally park or park in or in front of someone’s driveway. You will get a ticket and your vehicle will be set on fire. Do stay hydrated: drinking plain ole water is pretty damn smart while in the sun, especially if you’re consuming alcohol.

“WE ARE A GREAT TEAM, AND I CAN HONESTLY SAY I FEAR NO ONE ONCE I STEP ON THAT COURT.”

National Collegiate Volleyball Federation 2015 Outstanding Libero of the Year Award recipient

JONATHAN GARCIA | By Jordan Gass-Poore | Photos Ashley Haguewood |

One Man’s Volley: A Position Unlike Any Other When it comes to volleyball, Texas State junior Jonathan Garcia is a horse of a different color. The university’s club volleyball team captain is easy to spot on the court – he’s the only one on the team in a white jersey. The special attire comes with the position. Garcia has embraced being a libero (li-bear-oh), a defensive specialist position added to the game in 1999. A libero doesn’t serve, block or attempt to block, and is relegated to the back row. Seems kind of contradictory to the meaning of the position’s name – libero means free in Italian. So, what does a libero do?

8

BOB CATFANS | 05.15

He’s the player that passes the ball when the ball is out of bounds. The libero can also replace (not substitute) any position in the back row an unlimited amount of times throughout the entire match or tournament “On the court we are a great team, and I can honestly say I fear no one once I step on that court,” he said. It’s that confidence that allows the libero to transition from various positions, a chameleon on the court. Although the libero position may be less physically taxing than others, it requires more mental fortitude, like bravery and trust. It’s easy for the player to get himself into a hole he may find hard to get out of. “Our job is to keep the ball up as best we can and dig volleyballs going at crazy speeds,” Garcia said of the libero position. Digging is the act of stopping the volleyball from hitting the team’s court after the opposing team has spiked or served it over the net.

Garcia was trained to be the libero for the Texas State Men’s Volleyball team by a former coach who had played for the men’s Japanese National team as a defensive specialist. Before the coach’s help, Garcia said he used to close his eyes and pray that he could dig the ball. Now he plays the position confidently. On the downside, Garcia has had one recurring problem in his careerspraining his right ankle at Conference Championships, a curse that began his freshman year on the team. Maybe the curse will be broken this year and the Texas State Men’s Volleyball team will replace Texas A&M University as the conference’s champion, after spending years in third place.

A FUTURE TAX ON TUBERS? WORD! | By Xander Peters | Photo Will Bowling |

Proposed legislation seeks to regulate activity along San Marcos River “ENACT AND ENFORCE RULES THAT ADDRESS LITTER OF ALL KINDS, INCLUDING PLASTIC, GLASS AND ALUMINUM CANS.”

10 BOB CATFANS | 05.15

In a move for “promoting public safety and enjoyment,” State Senator Judith Zaffirini filed Senate Bill 234 in early April to create a new water-oriented river district (WORD), which would collect fees from businesses that operate along the river, such as tubing outfitters and campsites, to fund public safety and health initiatives.

regarding littering, too. A single offense would be considered a Class C misdemeanor, the same as theft of property worth less than $50, in Texas.

The bill states that the maximum tax to be charged for rental of water-oriented recreation equipment—like tubes, canoes and kayaks, as well as shuttle services—is set at $3 per person.

In layman’s terms, this means several things: A potential increase in law enforcement along the river, which would intimidate underage drinkers for obvious reasons; a potential improvement upon can cleanups, which would tickle the fancies of green enthusiasts and nature-lovers alike; and, perhaps most notably, the potential framework for an overall can ban on the river to come.

If passed, WORD would be able to adopt rules

In a statement attributed to Zaffirini, she said

WORD would allow the voters of precincts in Guadalupe and Caldwell counties to “enact and enforce rules that address litter of all kinds, including plastic, glass and aluminum cans.” The statement went on to say that Zaffirini’s intention “is that the bill would allow the district’s locally appointed board flexibility to consider and adopt reasonable rules that best address the existing challenges created by increased recreational activity on the San Marcos River.” That’s a lot of potential. Is it really best for San Marcos? Legislation will decide.

Senator Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo) represents the 21st Senatorial District, which stretches from the Rio Grande to the Colorado River and to the Port of Corpus Christi and the Valley. Re-elected most recently in an eighth landslide victory with 68 percent, she is the first Hispanic woman elected to the Texas Senate, the second highest-ranking senator, and the highest-ranking woman.

BOBCATFANS | BACKSTAGE “I WAS PISSED OFF AGAIN AND WANTED TO KEEP GOIN, I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT I WAS WRITING, RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE, BUT…IT WAS JUST COMING OUT VERY “TOADIES.”” - VADEN TODD LEWIS, SINGER/GUITARIST So when The Toadies were scheduled to shoot a live show in San Marcos, there was no question as to whether or not it would draw a big enough crowd. Their sound is just as coarse and raw as it was in 1994 when their massively successful Rubberneck dropped. The greatest part of the Toadies’ story and part of what continues to make their music alluring is their discovery and rediscovery of their love of being musicians. After reconvening in 2006 for a couple of sold-out shows, they came back with The greatest part of the Toadies’ story and part of what continues to make their music alluring is their discovery and rediscovery of their love of being musicians.

No Deliverance in 2008, and the album’s sound was just as contentious and assertive as ever. Although their sound has changed, adopting slightly less jarring and more melodious choruses on newer works, they still have that angry undertone. Lead singer Vaden Todd Lewis satisfies angry hearts and souls every time he belts out Possum Kingdom, which is never skipped in any of their sets. But he also has a very harmonious sound that often steals the show during his acoustic sets. And now here they are, just after their 20 year reunion, starting a full on tour with Fuel, Everclear and American Hi-Fi. If you caught the show or were one of the lucky hundred to nab a free shirt hang onto it, because The Toadies are back in business.

All breeds and sizes are welcome, but the ones that tend to do better at dock diving are dogs that are high energy and toy driven.

K-9 WATER WORLD: AN EXPERIENCE FOR DOGS AND OWNERS

“I’M IN IT FOR THE FUN.” Ginny

| By Heather Yzaquirre | Photos Andres Sotomayor |

There is a significant list of brilliantly bizarre things to do in San Marcos; here’s one for dog owners to add to that list. K-9 Water World is a pool tailored to accommodate dogs and their human companions for recreational and therapeutic use. It’s a 48’x21’ pool lined with a super thick vinyl that withstands even the thickest of nails. It’s totally puppy-proofed, with rubber ramps, rubber sidings and a wrap around wood deck with a fence. It’s cleaned twice a week, arguably an even cleaner status than your typical public pool. It’s rented out in 30-minute increments for just about any occasion, whether you want to utilize the doggie diving deck or just have a few hours swim time with your dog. It’s even been rented out for doggie birthday parties, which debatably are just as much of a social opportunity for their owners as they are for dogs. Doggie dock diving is an increasingly popular sport in which a dog jumps from a 20-foot long stretch of dock covered with Astroturf into a pool, having either distance or height measured for competition.

14 BOB CATFANS | 05.15

Left to right: Andra Moore(owner), Judy DeArmon, Grandson Damion Barrett, Meghan Luna Dogs left to right: Elvis, Sparky and Ginny Sparky

Aside from the dock diving, swimming can be a solution for a wide range of pet problems, like obesity, anxiety, stiff joints, old age or hyperactivity. And the same goes for humans; doing them together can be just a really fun experience. The dock diving facility is just far enough outside San Marcos to feel like you’re deep in the heart of the Texas countryside, surrounded by rolling hills, grazing cows and scenic skies. Andra Moore, owner and operator, says that since she’s opened the pool her life is, simply put, “Just more fun. People love their dogs, and this is a place they can come and watch them play and see these huge smiles come across their faces, and sometimes they see them do

things they’ve never done before or haven’t been able to do in ages. Seeing that improvement of the quality of someone’s life, that’s what I love most.” K-9 Water World has hosted two dock jumping competitions in the two years since opening, drawing crowds as big as 40 people, and have upcoming shows on May 9-10th and May 2324th, as well as a few in June. Dock Dogs: A world record dog jump is over 25 feet!

DOWN THE ROAD

Today, the original Dr. Pepper from Dublin is now called “Black Cherry” and labeled Dublin Bottling Works instead of the former Dr. Pepper Bottling Works.

Gourmet Popcorn By Jose Rodriguez Photos Ashley Haguewood

There is microwave popcorn, the freshly popped buttery kind you buy at the movie theater, and then there’s the sweet-to-savory madness happening at Papa Hoo’s in Wimberley. You never know what might pop up in Wimberley, Texas. Ever since Neal and Christy Johnson started filling the Wimberley Square with the fresh scent of gourmet popcorn, visitors can’t help but follow their nose inside.

“I would say that out of the 55 flavors we have available, Neal is responsible for about 50 percent of those.”

A few of those 55 flavor options include a spicy Sriracha Cheddar, Strawberry Cheesecake with a white chocolate drizzle and a rare, candy coated Root Beer flavor. The most popular is the Sea Salt Caramel, with the most unique being Puppy Chow: a caramel popcorn base coated in peanut butter and milk chocolate, mixed with Chex Mix and pretzels, Neal prepares a fresh batch of Green Apple

The Johnsons were blessed with a child later in life and realized they weren’t ready for retirement. That’s when a great idea popped into Neal’s head – literally. After learning the gourmet popcorn business from a friend with 30 years experience in the industry, they fell in love with Wimberley and moved down from Dallas just over a year ago. They started popping right away, opening their doors in March of 2014.

then doused in powered sugar. On average, the store pops about 400 gallons of popcorn a week, with a record of 270 gallons in one day. The popcorn is first popped in its base form then converted to its specialized flavor. Neal stays in the back not only popping the base throughout the day, but also converting it to each flavor with specialized equipment. “Popcorn is so much more than the pop, there is a lot that goes on after the pop,” says Christy. Papa Hoo’s also carries a pretty delicious soda selection, with varieties imported from as far away as Australia. However, they stay true to their Texas roots, offering the full line of Dublin Bottling Works’ sodas – home of the original Dr. Pepper. Along with their incredible selection, Papa Hoo’s will also create custom flavors and can alter colors for any type of event or occasion. Their biggest bag, The Party Bag, is 275 cups of your favorite popcorn flavors, we suggest you share it with friends.

The whole family is involved in the operations, including the Johnson’s eight-year-old son, Noah. He helps Christy greet customers at the front and is an expert on all soda and popcorn flavors. Neal is the Papa Hoo’s popping king, doing most of the cooking throughout the day. “Neal has tweaked and tweaked and created new recipes,” says Christy. “I would say that out of the 55 flavors we have available, Neal is responsible for about 50 percent of those.”

LOCAL SHOPS

“They look sad. Where’s the heart; where’s the soul?” -Mamma Laura

of past ceremonial blessings. For some 25 years, the candle shop and its owner have occupied this space as not just a home, but a refuge for the psychic’s lifelong task of helping those who seek it. “I heal people,” she tells me, breaking the long silence. “I help people.” People of all walks of Earth come to visit Mama Laura: Troubled parents with wayward kids. Drug addicts. Overstressed college students. Neglected children. The sad; sometimes the depressed or, much worse, the suicidal. Many come to her doorstep for supernatural services but leave with something else -- something beyond them.

The Interstate Psychic By Jon Wilcox

More than four decades ago, at the tender age of 13, the “power” came to Mama Laura. Like her mother, she realized that she was destined to be a Cherokee seer, a spiritual leader, a psychic. After knocking on the glass-paned front door of the Cherokee Candle Shop, a soft voice beckons to come inside. Past the dimly lit foyer, which appears to serve as a waiting room, sits Mama Laura -- a squat woman with delicately aging copper skin and silver-streaked black hair to frame her large, daunting eyes. With the flick of her wrist, she motions for me to sit next to her on a white leather couch. In front of us, a television plays muted next to a life-size, 200-yearold statue of Christ surrounded by dozens of flower bouquets. Rows of ceramic religious figurines, piles of hand-made rosaries and a bizarre variety of curios fill the space of the room underneath its amber-colored ceiling, stained from the incense smoke

From my pocket, I pull out one of the candle shop’s flyers, and ask her about the spiritual services her shop advertises, such as contact with spirits, dream interpretation, guided mediation, protection from “unwanted entities” and aura cleansing. Still, Mama Laura seems uninterested in my question; instead, she asks, “Do you pray?”

her grandchildren. Life as we know it. The psychic lady tells me a story of a young man who visited her years ago. Struggling to understand and accept his own homosexuality, the teenager told her he was depressed and ready to die. The two talked for a long time on her couch that day years ago, she remembers. She doesn’t know if their time together helped or not, but she still prays for him. Her sad eyes begin to shine with tears. “So what if you tweeze your eyebrows? Love is the most important thing,” she says, angrily, turning her head look through one of the windows in the living room. When Mama Laura looks at the world outside her tiny, gray house on the highway frontage road, she wishes she could stop all the violence, hate and unhappiness. “I sit on my couch and watch the people on the sidewalk,” she says, as I awkwardly get up to leave. “They look sad. Where’s the heart; where’s the soul?”

I shake my head no. “You don’t have to believe in God,” she says. “You can pray to a waterfall. You can pray to a mountain, as long as you pray.”

Located at 315 Linda Drive in San Marcos, Mama Laura has owned the Cherokee Candle Shop for more than 25 years.

At that, Mama Laura seems to finally notice me. I seem to have passed some crucial test, and suddenly, Mama Laura is telling me about everything -- candles, incense, Father Frank from Houston who comes twice a year to bless her shop, the evils of computers and technology, the absolute importance of love, a friend who recently moved away, 9/11,

The store sells a variety of blessed objects, including numerous candles, figurines, oils, incense and herbal extracts. Before moving to San Marcos, Mama Laura practiced healing in Seguin for 30 years.

MITCHELL ROBERTS BIRTHDAY: January 17 FAVORITE QUOTE: “Give a man a fish, and feed him for a day. Don’t give a man a fish, and feed yourself. He’s a grown man, and fishing isn’t’ hard. – Ron Swanson Mitchell Roberts, Principal Executive & President of EVO Entertainment Group, was raised in the theater business, and he is quickly becoming a major player in an area most known as the birth of the Drafthouse. He has a passion for creating ways for people to escape from the world and have a great night out, for the tradition of the entertainment experience and the drive to want to continue to find ways to make it even better. His days can be random and even hectic, but his personality prevents him from becoming a true suit. Since Evo Entertainment, his first real solo business venture, has opened its doors you’ll rarely run into Mitchell without an ear-to-ear smile and sparkle in his eyes. His family values are the root of his charm, which really packs quite a punch. He credits his grandfather for his continuously high aspirations. Ambition aside, he does have a laid back side and spends a lot of time on Lakes McQueeney and Canyon wakeboarding or surfing, his Australian Shepard Lexie in tow. The high energy and positivity he brings to everything he does makes him a great person to try to catch a movie with, and as he says himself, “Don’t swipe right. The best way to meet people is by getting out of the house and talking to them. What’s the worst that can happen? They say no? There’s nothing wrong with being personable.”

LUKE ADAMSON BIRTHDAY: November 4 FAVORITE QUOTE: “The only thing holding you back is yourself” Luke Adamson is the youngest bachelor on our list, still completing his undergrad work at Texas State, while also being one of the Rio Board Co. brothers that designs and manufactures those beautiful wooden boards you see being ridden across town. He’s the perfect guy to create a brand that inspires people to protect our river and enjoy the natural surroundings because he is that guy. Luke truly turned his hobby into craft, but still makes time to be the jack of all trades, spending his free time woodworking, paddle boarding, spearfishing, two-stepping, skateboarding, camping…. living life one fresh breath of air at a time. In the age of Tinder, the best way to meet someone is to…definitely not be on Tinder. His answer is: STEP 1: Go to river/restaurant/ anywhere STEP 2: Find most beautiful girl there STEP 3: Walk up to said girl and engage in conversation. STEP 4 (OPTIONAL): Take said girls phone number for further communication.

THOMAS CURTIS BIRTHDAY: April 24 FAVORITE QUOTE: “It is not titles that make men illustrious, but men who make titles illustrious” - Machiavelli Thomas Curtis, Texas State Alumni and now Director of Marketing and Technology at Chuck Nash Auto group, spends a typical day tinkering with computers, designing billboards, directing digital campaigns and assisting with the group’s philanthropic side; “busy day” doesn’t even seem to encompass it. But those long days have helped him be a part of two new automotive center start-ups and become a leader in the community. This will be his first year serving as President of The Sights & Sounds of Christmas, and he hopes it has an even bigger impact than last year, when they helped raise over $100,000 for local charities and non-profits. Like most San Marcos natives, he’s spent the majority of his free time on the river banks, and even served as a guide for whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Guadalupe. These days, he’s switched it up for a small sailing yacht that he enjoys taking out and letting the wind guide him across the lake. When it comes to dating, it’s the little things that make an impact. “A girl that will get up early to have breakfast with you goes a long way!”

RIO RODRIGUEZ BIRTHDAY: May 2 FAVORITE QUOTE: “Dream as if you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today. “ - James Dean Rio Rodriguez, owner and operator of San Marvelous Clothing Company, has had a long journey to the square in San Marcos, which is the central source for San Marvelous products. He spends his mornings winding up and preparing for his days over coffee and tacos at LaFonda’s, one of San Marcos’ more modest restaurants. His business is founded on his own emotions about leaving Texas State and wanting to celebrate those days with a shirt. Soon all his buddies wanted in, and he found himself taking his design hobby to the next level. His love for San Marcos and TXST finds him frequently on the river, at parties, and constantly socializing, but if you want to stand out from the crowd with him, invite him on a snorkeling date at Sewell Park. It will really sweep him off his feet.

The Cadillac margarita was featured in the Texas Monthly Top 10 for a reason. This marg is made with Cazadores tequila, Patron orange liqueur, sweet and sour, and a splash of sprite. Part of the experience is watching the cashier make it right in front of you – the only designated bar at Chimy’s is the salsa bar. Otherwise, food and drinks are ordered at the same counter, so they’ll make your drinks there and call your name over the speaker when the tacos are ready to pick up! 217 E Hopkins St, San Marcos (512) 216-6175

DRINK

JUST PEACHY @ CASA MARIA This is one of the more authentic Mexican eateries in town. The food served here is more Tex than Mex, if you will. And their list of margaritas is distinctive, too. The fruity ones (Jolly Rancher, Coconut, Kiwi, Peach) may sound a little sweet, but the flavors aren’t overpowering. If adding spicy varieties like chamoy and jalapeno didn’t already set them apart, they also offer a Big Red Rita (as in, the soda from your childhood, in a bottle, upside down in your margarita). They all come in a huge fishbowl glass for $8. 706 S Guadalupe St, San Marcos (512) 392-9302 Pair it with: Chips and green salsa

MEXICAN MARTINI @ PALMER’S

ANCHO CHILE RITA @ ZELICKS

Not that there’s anything bad about a “normal” margarita, but the Mexican Martini at Palmer’s is just elegant. This go-to drink is essentially a margarita made with their house tequila, Patron, triple sec, and fresh lime, but it’s served in a shaker cup with a martini glass. During happy hour, when they’re only $5, the place gets packed. Order the famous baked fondue and you’ve got yourself a tastefully sophisticated, date/parent appropriate, happy hour experience.

If you like your margarita with a little kick, try the Ancho Chile Rita. It was originally featured as a Drink of the Month, but it has gotten enough interest to stay on the menu. You won’t get a burning sensation – it’s more of a tingly finish. With Tequila Cabeza, Ancho Reyes liqueur, agave nectar and lime juice, this cocktail is a sweet and spicy twist on the classic margarita.

$1 MARGARITAS @ GRINS You know we couldn’t make this list without mentioning the margaritas that are arguably the most iconic in San Marcos. It’s always seems like happy hour at Grins, and there is no telling how many $1 margaritas they serve each day. They’re not the biggest, but they pack a punch. The affordable drinks, along with a chilled out treehouse atmosphere, have made Grins a San Marcos staple for drinking outside since 1975. 700 N LBJ Dr #114, San Marcos (512) 805-0880 Pair it with: Enormous onion rings.
