THERE’S NO TY IN BASEBALL Longtime head coach devotes full time to cancer battle.

Cancer sucks. Fighting cancer is tough. So tough, it’s taking Ty Harrington out of the game, at least temporarily. The longtime Texas State baseball coach has been battling rectal cancer since August 2014. “I originally thought I would be able to manage treatments and coaching at a high level, but the effects have been tough. I need to pay attention to my health and getting better,” said Harrington. “My return will be determined by how I feel. As soon as I feel strong enough to lead the team in the high manner it takes, then I will return,” said Harrington. “I will still be associated with the team, but I’m confident that my assistant coaches, who have done most of the work with these guys in my absence, will do a good job and continue to work with our student-athletes at a high level.” In Harrington’s absence, pitching coach Jeremy Fikac will act as interim head coach, with Mike Silva and Jeremy Knox assisting.

THUMBS

UP & DOWN

The new “Greetings From 78666” mural. Seen on the side of Black Rabbit in Kissing Alley. The mural adds another touch of class to the downtown San Marcos area. Speaking of Kissing Alley, it lived up to its reputation on Valentines Day when Rachel Schneider and Robbie Rollins tied the knot in a late afternoon affair. Local businesses donated a variety of services to make the day special. Kudos to the Texas State Athletic Department for retiring the #37 worn by Paul Goldschmidt when he played baseball for the Bobcats. Now a star with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Goldy is the first Texas State athlete to be so honored. Now that LBJ Street’s renovation in downtown San Marcos is complete, it’s a shame there are two fewer clothing boutiques to shop at there. Emeralds and Langford Market have both closed their doors. Hopefully their storefronts won’t be vacant for long.

19TH CENTURY CHARM, 21ST CENTURY SELECTION By Heather Yzaguirre

Photos Ashley Haguewood

New Braunfels is often seen as the historic center of the hill country. Right in the middle of the massive growth that’s making the distance between San Antonio and Austin smaller and smaller, is a town where most businesses are family-owned, some dating back to the 19th century. Henne Hardware is one of those businesses. It’s Texas’ oldest hardware store in continuous operation, serving Comal and surrounding counties for over 150 years. The Louis Henne Company was founded in 1857 as an expansion of the family tin-smithing operation into the general hardware arena. Over the next century it provided the majority of the materials and tools needed as the town continued to be built around them. Today, Henne provides basic hardware along with specialty and older items that are hard to find in today’s market. It’s also a good place to get practical gifts and souvenirs after perusing through the unique shopping environment. Located in an old two-story Victorian building built by the Henne family in 1893, the store itself is quite a spectacle. Its ceilings are constructed of ornate tin.

Henne Hardware is one of those businesses. It’s Texas’ oldest hardware store in continuous operation, serving Comal and surrounding counties for over 150 years.

The store was built specifically to accommodate the materials of the hardware business at the turn of the 20th century, like built-in shelving, rolling ladders, cable-guided money trolleys (predating the use of cash registers) and a hand operated elevator. Parquet floors in the show windows, along with glass and wood display cases with solid brass fixtures add an element of sophisticated design to the store, providing a perfect balance of functionality and class that architects and interior designers strive to achieve. The store has been meticulously preserved over the past hundred years, so stepping into the store is like taking a step into another century. Henne Hardware upholds old fashioned service and provides products new and old, making it a contender – even giving it an edge - against giants like Lowe’s or Home Depot. In addition to products they offer services like glass, screen and small appliance repair, as well as an extensive catalog for products they may not carry in store. If they don’t have what you need, someone there will help you find a solution.

LOCAL START UPS Once he got his taste buds on the Busy Bee he was stuck. And that was perfectly fine for him.

INTO THE HIVE In 2010, after working as a Tantra barista, he became coowner of the coffee shop. “I saw endless potential in that wonderful old building and the community that had been cultivated there, and I still do,” Lilley says. Lilley has bottled this secret to success. It took years to start the company, but now Lilly and friends are busy like bees in their Wimberley-based commercial kitchen. It can sometimes take eight-to-nine-hours to brew a 50-gallon batch of Yerba mate tea in stainless steel drums. Yerba mate is a South American plant in the Holly family whose leaves can be used to make tea similar to green tea in its flavor. “It also has many health benefits of both green tea and chocolate, as well as giving one an almost euphoric sense of focus,” Lilley says.

The origin of Tantra Coffeehouse’s Busy Bee drink is one of the greatest mysteries of our time. The orange juice, honey and Yerba mate tea concoction could be the elixir of the gods.

Or, a caffeinated beverage without the crash that’s now being bottled and sold at various San Marcos locations, including, most recently, The Yellow Store. “All the buzz without the crash,” says Adam Lilley, Busy Bee bottling company and Tantra co-owner.

LIVING THE SWEET LIFE Lilley had hopped from one coffee shop to the next before he found his way to Tantra in the summer of 2008. He had moved to San Marcos to live near friends and the San Marcos River. He had moved to San Marcos for a change of pace. SMTXMAGAZINE.COM

The first batch of bottled Busy Bee was sold at Tantra in September. In just a few months, the shelves at Root Cellar, as well as Austin’s Radio Coffee and Bar and SmokeATX were stocked with the stuff that’s making people seriously consider trading in their latte. “I say, don’t replace coffee if you don’t have to,” says Lilley. “Drink both, just not necessarily at the same time (we break this rule sometimes).”

BUSY BEE FLAVORS Orange Blossom: Mate’, Texas wildflower honey and orange juice Lavender Lemonade: Mate’, scratch-made lavender simple syrup and lemon juice Ginger Limeade: Mate’, Texas wildflower honey, sugar and fresh-juiced ginger root (No dyes, no preservatives, no chemical additives and no corn syrup. All made with Fair-Trade organic, unsmoked Yerba mate. “Just great ingredients and lots of love,” Lilly says.)

PUL LED POR K @ PIN BAL LZ KIN GDO M Pure pork shoulder, Carolina’s premier meat of choice. When smoked for hours on end and soaked in tangy sweet sauce, there is no better base to build a sandwich around. At first glance, it could be mistaken for a typical pulled-pork number. But the chefs take great pride in their work by ditching the usual prepackaged stuff and smoke-roasting their own garlicky, molasses-

punched, slow-cooked pork with Carolina zing. The meat’s luscious fat and added sauce bastes the meat, transforming the sandwich into something you can’t get just anywhere, especially Texas. The accompaniment of a sweet onion slaw joins the pork between a fresh jalapeno cheddar bun. 15201 S IH 35 Frontage Rd (Exit 220) Buda

BE TW EE N TW O SL IC ES The juiciest, meatiest, hands-down tastiest sandwiches you must get your mouth around. BEEF ON WECK @ SEAN PATRICKS At the corner of San Antonio St. and LBJ on the square, German purists can get their thinly sliced top-round roast beef piled on a squishy, buttersmothered kummelweck roll topped with kosher salt & caraway seed, horseradish and au jus, no questions asked. Dipping the top bun in au jus is traditionally correct, the bottom bun is reserved for mopping up the juices that run down the sides of your mouth when taking a bite, but there are no rules to enjoying an old classic. It’s comes with a side of fresh hand-cut fries – and don’t forget to order a tasty brewed beverage. 202 E San Antonio St San Marcos

“The Weck pairs very well with a Thirsty Goat”

BBQ BRI SKE T @ KEN T BLA CK' S BAR BEC UE We Texans have a way of sticking to our traditions, and it’s most evident when comes to good barbecue. Owner Kent Black brought his family’s almost century-old style of smoking meats from Lockhart to a hidden corner of San Marcos last year. In the process he created an inviting atmosphere that pulls you towards a gorgeous outdoor patio nestled under large oaks with an outdoor bar to boot. Eighteen hours of smoky fat-rendering love are put into each of Kent’s BBQ sandwiches —it is no wonder the hot juicy meat is sliced and placed on the bun as plain as Jane. It is up to you to choose your fixins’, Texas style. 500 Hull St San Marcos

SMTXMAGAZINE.COM

19

The original sandwich creator, a pub owner, is said to have used the kummelweck roll with the thought that the salty top of the roll would make his patrons purchase more beer.

RIB EYE STE AK @ INO 'Z Nestled in a charming shopping strip off the town’s main drag sits a restaurant with a beautiful view of Cypress Creek. At Wimberley’s indie brew & chew, the multi-level outdoor deck serves as a rest stop for weary shop-ridden husbands looking for suds and a tasty treat. The menu and the wait staff waste no time in highly recommending their best offerings. One of the waiters endorsed the Ribeye Steak sandwich, explaining that he eats it every other day he is at work. A pink juicy center brings joy to those who enjoy a well cooked steak. Served on a hoagie roll, it is a tasty vehicle for soaking up the flavorful juices. 14004 Ranch Road 12 Wimberley

During World War II and prompted by meat rations, egg salad sandwiches grew in popularity. However, once meat rations were lifted...it was burger time.

FARM TO MARKET EGG SALAD @ ROLLING IN THYME & DOUGH Worth the drive, it is the ultimate expression of Hays County farm-to-table: a mind altering, farm-fresh egg salad sandwich on your choice of fresh baked bun – we recommend the focaccia. You’ve never tasted one this delicious, so good that you don’t even have to like egg salad sandwiches to recognize this one is special while your taste buds beg you to take another bite. Coupled with oh-so-good homemade mayo and pesto, tomatoes, and mozzarella – it’s knee-weakening. To find this gem, hightail it to Dripping Springs and enjoy dining in the outdoor herb garden. If you still have room, grab a dessert. 333 W Hwy 290 Dripping Springs

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK SLIDERS @ DARK HORSE LODGE The term “cowboy ribeye” is often used in restaurants for a bone-in ribeye – but that would not make for a good sandwich eating experience.

Note the new name, this was once the upscale Bordeaux Steak House, but now under the same ownership, it has a new style, turning its sights on the pub and grub business. Cute bartenders tend to patrons’ favorite cocktails while whiffs of stomach alerting smells linger from the kitchen. Like the food of its past, the bar’s menu is more refined than most, and most cheesesteaks aren’t refined at all. The sourdough slider rolls are pleasingly buttery and soft with a just the right amount of char from the grill – unable to contain what’s inside are small piles of sautéed rib eye beef, tender to the bite and dressed in meat-pebbled onions, mushrooms and gooey melted pepper jack cheese. 108 W Center St Kyle

FALAFEL @ ST PITAS

TEXAS BRISKET PHILLY W/ JALAPENOS @ AJ'S RANCH ROAD GRILL While still under the radar for many, this place is quickly becoming an up and coming favorite. Open till 3am most nights of the week, it’s food is gaining in popularity as a top choice for late night dining after a long night of tomfoolery on the square. The seating area is limited but the menu is not, specializing in “good & cheap” food with just the right amount of grease to settle the stomach. A quarter pound of shaved smoked brisket, grilled onions and green peppers is blanketed with a layer of pepperjack and jalapenos (optional) on a very buttery sourdough bun. Top it off with chili verde ranch sauce. 205 Moore St. San Marcos

Touted as the only Late Night BBQ in San Marcos, maybe in all of Hays for that matter.

This food trailer always seems to have a line of people waiting to make them a fresh pita, and good food takes time. The differences between falafel sandwiches are subtle. Good ingredients like the ones use at St. Pita’s make for an excellent introduction to the world of ground chickpea delights, a favorite for many wanting a meatless option. In-between a disc of warm pita lie three big toasty falafel fritters, surrounded by romaine lettuce, tomato, cucumber and red onion. Because it’s so tasty, we recommend asking for an extra drizzle of their Saintly sauce on top. 312 E Hopkins St San Marcos

The current world record for largest falafel ball is just over 164 pounds.

MEATBA LL CAL ZON E WIT H ONIO N & PEP PERS @ GUM BY'S Originating in Naples, it is often fried in olive oil in other parts of the world.

THE BREAD There are six options to choose from including gluten free and lettuce wrapped.

Say hello to the calzone at Gumby’s, where each one is baked for maximum density, medium-soft crust, and delicate richness. To nail the perfect pizza-pie sandwich, it must be loaded with intensely flavorful sauce, high rated cheese and jam packed with fillings that add textural excellence. Look no further than

the daunting Meatball with Onion & Peppers —bigger than most people’s heads, massaged with herbs, baked to the millisecond of melted perfection, brushed with their secret Pokey Butter, and sliced in two. Dip the gloriously bronzed dough shell in your favorite companion, like buttermilk ranch or marinara. 403 N Guadalupe St San Marcos

THE BOB CAT CLU B @ MO CHA S AND JAVAS

JAVA BACON A trademarked signature, the in-house made bacon is encrusted with fine ground coffee and cooked until crispy. It is a twist every bacon lover must try.

Since 2003, the location on N. LBJ has been adding more and more food options to it’s menu, incorporating the time and care used in their bean brewing and translating that into their food preparation. Heavy traffic from college students demands a hearty club, but what is more impressive is the students’ willingness to spend a little more for better ingredients, a great sign of the elevation of the local food scene. Using only Boar’s Head meats and cheese, the panini pressed beast struggles to encase a triple layer of turkey, ham, swiss and cheddar, thick-cut tomatoes, a slathering of garlic mayo, and strips of house-made java bacon. 700 North LBJ Drive #103 San Marcos

TAKING THE NEXT STEP

| By Steve Helsing |

Mager, Johnson attempt to wow NFL teams. Only the elite get invited. Of all the college football players from across the country, a mere 323 were invited to the 2015 NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Only five of those 323 came from the Sunbelt Conference and two of those five, Craig Mager and Will Johnson, are Bobcats. In mid-February, Texas State cornerback Mager and kicker Johnson were put through the paces for scouts who think they might have what it takes to make it in the National Football League. The toughest part for the players might not have had anything to do with their on the field performance. The Combine also included daily interviews with team executives and the Wonderlic Test, a method of testing players’ learning and problem solving

abilities. Of the two players, Mager had the more grueling test. The Bobcats cornerback, who started every game in a stellar 4-year career, had to show his stuff to the scouts in the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, shuttle run and the 3 cone drill, along with the interviews and Wonderlic test. Overall, Mager ranked 14th among cornerbacks at the combine, about the middle of the pack. According to the NFC director of player personnel on NFL.com, Mager may not be big enough to play safety but “he’s a player and he’s

really, really tough.” The web site’s Lance Zierlein gives him a shot at becoming an NFL starter. Kickers at the Combine like Johnson are welcome to participate in all the physical drills but seldom do. They do the off the field activities all players are required to do but on the field, all they do is kick. No info was available on how Johnson performed but there have been rumors the Philadelphia Eagles are interested in acquiring his services. Johnson as one of only 13 specialists invited to the Combine, while Mager was joined by 31 other NFL cornerback hopefuls.

WORKOUTS SPECIFICALLY CREATED FOR SHAPING YOUR GLUTES, TRICEPS, AND WAIST.

SHAPE YOUR BOOTY Lunge - The lunge is very versatile and also a great

shaper of the glutes and legs. The lunge can move forward, backward, side-side. You can add weight with dumbbells or choose walking, or jumping lunges to receive a great burn in the legs.

BEFORE YOU START The Research

shows that stretching before workouts actually increases ones ability to pull or tear a muscle compared to dynamic stretching. A quick routine like the one on the right will spike the heart rate and increase body temperature to help prepare joints and major muscles for exercise. At the end of each workout, stretching and foam rolling is advised for at least ten minutes to prevent injuries and soreness.

Goblet Squat - This is a great version of the squat that engages the abs and also gives great shape and toning to the butt and thighs. Burpee - The burpee is probably one of the biggest bang for your buck movements that you can do for conditioning. Set up the workout Tabata style, 20 sec of work, 10 sec of rest for 4 minutes total and you will not only receive a great workout but you will be shedding fat simultaneously!

Flutter Kicks - Do these in sets of 25 and your abs are sure to

be burning! The hollow hold position is also a great gymnastics position to hold for time if you cannot flutter the feet. Both help a lot with body control and ab strength.

all in the hips! This is very important as a majority of people tend to squat in their hinge. Push the booty back until all the weight is held in the heels, back should be parallel to the ground, knees slightly bent. Keeping the feet glued to the ground, fully extend the hips and squeeze the glutes. All the power should come from the hips!

WORKOUT 2:

Knee Tucks

These target the lower abs, these are a progression to eventually being able to do knee tucks and leg raises on a bar.

FOUR EASY TO FOLLOW NUTRITION TIPS TOWARDS REACHING YOUR GOAL BODY: 1. Make sure every meal and/or snack has protein in it. 2. Add veggies to as many meals/snacks as possible. 3. Drink water. And then some more. 4. For the majority of the week, stick with minimally refined whole food.

BOBCATFANS | ATHLETES Clementi, a Texas State graduate student, joined the team that year, after briefly considering women’s rugby, only partly because she was a Harry Potter fan.

Profiles

Fellow Texas State Quidditch member Richard Kemp taught Clementi how to play the sport. “I was a little intimidated to come into the team,” she admitted. “But (Kemp) showed me the ropes and invited me into his circle of friends and we have been friends ever since.” Most of Clementi’s family and friends, however, think Quidditch is “lame” because they haven’t seen the sport played in-person. “I think that strangers to Quidditch think that we L.A.R.P. (Live Action Role Playing) around the field and cast spells at each other,” said the New York native. “After witnessing the physicality, intensity and intrigue of Quidditch they really get it.” Her boyfriend was one of those people.

He hadn’t heard of Harry Potter and thought Quidditch was “weird and nerdy” until he watched one of her tournaments. Now he’s captain of the Texas State varsity Quidditch team. The team, which ranks in the top five in the world, is comprised of chasers, beaters, keepers and seekers. As a defensive beater for the Texas State Quidditch team, Clementi’s job is to play a zone in front of the team’s hoops to stop opposing drives by “beating,” or knocking out, the opposing players with a dodgeball. This position works in her favor because of her 13-year experience playing softball. Clementi’s Quidditch position may have had something to do with her physicality, but she was “sorted” into Gryffindor, one of the four houses of the fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter book series, because of her “loyalty, nerve and pride.”

ELIZABETH CLEMENTI | By Jordan Gass-Poore | Photos Ashley Haguewood |

When push comes to shove, Texas State Quidditch President Elizabeth Clementi knows it’s best to move out of the way.

TexasStateQuidditch @txstquidditch

A PVC pipe “broom” accident resulted in seven stitches when Clementi’s eyebrow split open after being tackled during an intercollegiate game, where players don’t wear helmets or pads. Her thumbs have also been broken several times from deflecting balls while holding a dodgeball or landing poorly after a tackle. It’s difficult to sweep something like that under the rug. Quidditch, a full-contact sport inspired by the Harry Potter book series, became active at Texas State in fall 2011.

“THERE’S THIS HUGE ART CULTURE BUBBLING JUST UNDER THE RADAR IN SAN MARCOS, AND A COMMUNITY OF MUSICIANS THAT ARE CREATING THIS REALLY GREAT CULTURE.” -JOHNNY STORBECK, GUITAR “There’s this huge art culture bubbling just under the radar in San Marcos, and a community of musicians that are creating this really great culture.”

GETTING FUNKED UP IN SAN MARCOS | By Heather Yzaguirre |

MAMA K AND THE SHADES MAKE SURE THE SAN MARCOS MUSIC SCENE HAS SOUL The musical palette in SMTX continues to expand as bands like Mama K and the Shades are bringing a fresh take on a classic style. Formed just last year, the 10-member entourage is quite a collaboration, featuring 3 dedicated vocalists, bass, guitar, drums, saxophone and a keyboardist. They’ve developed quite a following in Austin, as people love their classic yet fresh sound, a mix of funk, soul and jazz mixed together to get crowds up and dancing. Energy plays a prominent role in their shows. With 10 people on Video stage all working towards a unified sound, the energy is Mama K and The Shades potent, reverberating through the crowd. “Feelin Good” Mama-K-The-Shades

14 BOB CATFANS | 02.15

Mama K and the Shades have maxed out Austin venues like Stubbs and The Sahara, impressive for a newly formed ensemble. But venues of their choice include San Marcos’ Triple Crown and Taxis, which they say bring a whole new kind of energy and vibe.

Mama K and the Shades come from a jam-band background. One reason behind their success is they’ve struck a sweet spot between being a traditional funk/soul band that plays music as it comes, and a show band. With 10 people on stage, it can get hairy fast, so they perform strictly rehearsed music, but they do a great job balancing between making it seem sporadic and giving the audience a good show.

BAND MEMBERS Kelsey "Mama K" Garcia - Vocals Nnedi Agbaroji - Vocals Willie Barnes - Vocals David Thacker - Keys Johnny Storbeck - Guitar Lee Braverman - Bass Chris Barnes - Drums/Vocals David McKnight - Saxophone Donald McDaniel - Trombone Joseph Morrow - Trumpet

MEN’S BOUTIQUE UPS THE ANTE FOR MENSWEAR | By Heather Yzaguirre | Photos Andres Sotomayor |

San Marcos gets its first urban fashion store for men, and it’s packing more than just hot new merch Well, guys, your cargo shorts and lazy button downs just aren’t going to cut it anymore. Leosquare is a new addition to the square and it isn’t a bar, club or eatery. Leosquare is giving men everything they need right under one roof. Their walls are adorned with Jays and Air Force Ones, their racks lined with some of the market’s more elusive brands like Diamond Supply, 10 Deep and Pink Dolphin, none of which you would find at the outlets. Part of the vision of the store isn’t just what they sell, it’s bringing culture and conversations to San Marcos, where it previously never existed. It’s providing a space for a different kind of creativity to cultivate, one that can be a major contributor to a growing city. When girls shop together, when anyone shops together, it sparks conversations, it creates a kinship. Leosquare is that

Back in December, DJ visionary Caked Up paid a visit to the store, visiting with customers and talking shop for a few hours before his show at The Marc. The store was flooded with fans and gawkers alike, and they got his opinion on everything from music to movies to shoes and fashion. This type of male fashion isn’t just your run of the mill, let me grab this in blue type of deal, either. It’s fashion. Women have Jimmy Choos, men have Air Force Ones.
