President’s Welcome Welcome to our final Business Matters of 2017. As the year draws to a close this is a useful opportunity to reflect on some of the key achievements of your Chamber in the last year. • Chamber membership remains healthy at just under 570, with 68 new members joining in the last 12 months • 3 new staff have joined the Chamber team: Jill Carrino, Development Manager, Carol Griffiths, Membership Administrator and Stuart Murray, Business Mentoring Executive. • B2B 2017 Business Matters in Renfrewshire saw 61 exhibitors at the Lagoon with 6 seminar speakers. • Skills Ambassador Program delivered to every senior school in Renfrewshire: 13 ambassadors recruited to work with group of young people on coaching, inspiring confidence, cv building & interview skills over 6 months. • STEM fortnight offered 583 opportunities for young people with 10 companies offering activities. • Business Mentoring – 103 business mentor matches. • Meetings – 200+ bookings for our meeting rooms. • 50 Events with 2,500 attendees. • New hi-speed internet connection installed in August 2017. New IT equipment installed switching to cloud based storage enabling efficiencies in remote access and working efficiencies for the team. • “Business of Culture” unique event attracted 70 businesses to the Spiegeltent in October. In partnership with Arts & Business Scotland and Paisley 2021. • Rocco 2017 in what some are saying was the best yet, 470 attendees, over 100 entries, 16 awards with Main Sponsor Paisley 2021 • We also processed 11,000 export documents, emphasising the importance of international trade and
export for Renfrewshire’s business community. • Sponsored UWS HETL Conference, Scotland’s Town-Centre Partnership Conference, Glasgow Airport & intu Braehead Staff Awards. Paisley 2021 saw significant support from the business community. Your Chamber was at the forefront of encouraging our members to back the bid and you responded in magnificent fashion. Be in no doubt, your outstanding support caught the eye of the judging panel. Over 200 companies formally backed the bid. Unfortunately, as you will know Coventry were announced winners on Thursday 7th December. We congratulate the Coventry 2021 team on their achievement. For Paisley & Renfrewshire the bidding process has quite simply changed the game. Paisley is now very much on the map once more and the opportunity to develop our cultural activities will present real opportunity for economic growth. These are potentially exciting times for the economy of Renfrewshire. In all my years as President I’ve never known this level of opportunity and investment brought about by initiatives such as the Glasgow City Region City Deal. The recent announcement that the National Manufacturing Institute of Scotland (NMIS) is to be based close to Glasgow Airport is very welcome. This represents an investment over 100 Million. 65 Million will come from Scottish Government and 39 Million coming from Renfrewshire Council’s part of the city deal project. NMIS has the potential to create thousands of jobs, lead the way in innovative development and high value manufacturing. However, it is crucial Government responds with the appropriate transport infrastructure to allow our
skilled work force toaccessthese opportunities. The Scottish Government’s Draft Budget 2018/19 has just been announced by Finance Secretary Derek Mackay MSP. We are pleased to see plans to develop the Scottish economy and welcome funding packages for research & development, the construction industry and improving our broad band connectivity. However, it is crucial Scotland’s ability to compete is not hindered by a differing tax landscape to the rest of the UK. I am also encouraged to see the progress on business rates to come into line with the rest of the country. Political engagement has continued throughout 2017 with more meetings planned for Q1 2018. Please continue to support your Chamber; Attend our events and make best use of our products and services. If you wish to know more about how we can help your business grow and prosper please in touch with the team. All that remains for me to say is enjoy the break over the festive period and I hope you get the chance to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends. Your chamber team are looking forward to helping Renfrewshire grow and prosper in 2018. Support your Chamber and your Chamber will support you.

A Warm Welcome from our Chief Executive Welcome members to the Winter edition of our ever-popular magazine Business Matters. Congratulations to Jean Cameron and the team from Paisley 2021 for leading such an outstanding campaign. Her team drove the bid forward with real skill and passion. Whilst the bid was ultimately unsuccessful the legacy of the bidding process will be felt for years to come. There is real momentum to build on the goodwill, positive stories and the raised profile Paisley now enjoys. The DCMS judges specifically highlighted that partnership around Paisley 2021 was the strongest of any bidding candidate place– and the business community can be rightly proud of all your efforts in supporting the campaign over the last two years, thank you.
Rocco 2017 proved to be a great success. Thank you to all our sponsors, all who entered and our worthy winners. Feedback has been very positive and please put Friday 16th November 2018 in your diary as planning is already underway. Welcome to our new business mentoring Exec Stuart Murray. Stuart joined the chamber team in November, is a Paisley buddie and looks forward to supporting you in 2018. I would encourage you to contact him and explore how the business mentoring program can help as you seek to develop your business. We return in January with our Burns lunch on Thursday 25th January at Ingliston Country Club. Always a popular event with burns speaker Martin Cassidy, Burns singer and Russell from UWS, our regular Rocco piper.
To all our members, from myself and all the team at the Chamber have an enjoyable Christmas and best wishes for a prosperous 2018.

The Abbey Mill Hub opens for Business
The long-awaited Hub development at Abbey Mill is finally ready to start welcoming new businesses. Based in the main Mile End Mill Building of Abbey Mill Business Centre on Seedhill Road, it truly is a hidden gem. It is now an eclectic mix of painstakingly restored original features and modern artistic statement blended together to offer a unique working and meeting place for Renfrewshire companies to do business. The development stretches across the whole of the 4th floor of the former Thread Mill Building, and certainly offers a room with a view, with spectacular aspects across Paisley to the Campsie Hills beyond. The relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere of the 1500 sq ft. communal space at the entrance to the floor, offers casual seating and lends itself well to be the perfect platform for collaborative working. As expected, free Wi-Fi is available throughout the communal areas, which means staying connected is never a problem at The Hub. Set amongst dramatic cast iron columns, original polychromatic brickwork and polished maple floors, there is a definite air of New York loft style in this enviable and very unique working environment. With additional meeting areas, The Hub offers its tenants a much-required
multifunctional space. The impressive zinc bar, by leading designer Tom Dixon, boasts dual purpose functionality. Originally made for Centre Point in London, by day it serves as an informal workspace with individual workstations, but can also be utilised for its originally intended purpose as a bar; ideal for networking events or collaborative receptions. Flexibility is key, and so as well as The Hub, Abbey Mill offers businesses adaptable office configuration options and a bespoke design service. The team will work with businesses to create an individualised office space, which can include company branding, customised paint colours or internal offices. To accommodate the wide range of business types and sizes, The Hub offices that are available range from 500sq ft up to 1200 sq ft and the possibility is there should businesses wish to become co-tenants and share an office with each other. Mile End Mill has come a long way since its original use as a finishing mill during Paisley’s textile boom. It was home to innovation then, and now, with The Hub being one of the most unique and innovative places for Renfrewshire businesses to base themselves, it appears this will continue to be the building’s legacy.

Environment for SMEs in Scotland improves as Health Check Index for the rest of UK falls to lowest level in three years This quarter’s SME Health Check Index from CYBG, owner of Clydesdale Bank, and compiled in association with leading economics consultancy, Cebr has recorded its lowest score since January 2014, with the indicators for employment, revenue, confidence and net business creation all down compared to Q2. Regions across England and Wales have seen a sharp decline in their scores, however SMEs in Scotland experienced a rise of five points in the Index compared to the previous quarter. Scotland’s SME Health Check Index showed several positive signs as economic growth (as measured by GDP) improved from the second quarter of 2017. Also,
improvements in employment and capacity should provide a boost later next year. However, business cost measures, lending and confidence all deteriorated. Small and medium businesses are essential to the productivity and prosperity of the UK economy. There are 5.7 million SMEs, employing 16.1 million people and they account for 51% of the UK’s total business revenue (£1.9 trillion a year). Sustained poor performance by SMEs could have a significant and long term negative impact on the economy. Clydesdale Bank is calling on the Government to make changes sooner rather than later and do more to help businesses manage their costs and restore confidence.
Earlier this year, CYBG committed to making a minimum of £6 billion of lending available from 2017 to 2019 to help fuel the growth of SME businesses in the UK, underscoring the critical role that the banking sector plays in supporting new enterprises and cultivating established businesses.
Give your business room to grow with a commercial mortgage Buy or improve your business premises with a commercial mortgage from Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank when you borrow over £25,000. You can choose a repayment term up to 20 years* and even build in a capital repayment holiday of up to 5 years† to help boost your cash flow.
Please note that security over your commercial premises will be required and your property may be repossessed if you do not keep up any repayments on your borrowing. Any other asset used as security, which may include your home, will be at risk if you break the agreement, and may be sold to repay your debt. A commercial mortgage is a term loan product. Terms and Conditions apply. All lending is subject to status and applicants must be aged 18 or over. An arrangement fee, valuation and security fees will be payable. *Maximum mortgage term 20 years. The commercial mortgage amount and term offered will depend on an assessment of your business circumstances. † Taking a capital repayment holiday will increase the total interest charged and the total amount payable over the full term of the commercial mortgage.

Employment Law – Realise your staff potential! Over the last few months I have been conducting a Group Mentoring Employment Law Session with around a dozen delegates. These sessions highlight the benefits of the Mentoring programme for Chamber members. Our topics were chosen being relevant and topical to provoke engaging debate and discussion. Delegates came from a diverse range of organisations: public, private and third sector, each with a unique insight into people issues and employment law and practice. The first session covered how employers can protect their organisation when an employee leaves, looking at what the law says about notice and the contract of employment, the thorny issues around garden leave and the extent to which provisions can be enforced that seek to restrict the ability of staff post termination (such as to compete or undertake other activities that could damage the organisation once the employee has left employment). Each employer has different challenges. We shared best practice together with practical tips and pointers that have been shown to work. The next session explored managing disciplinary issues in the workplace which is always a popular and hotly contested issue. Each organisation has a different approach. Failure to manage such issues is problematic and a clear and consistent approach is needed to ensure staff act accordingly and risk is minimised. Ensuring legal issues are considered can be difficult in a fast paced working environment but doing so is vital to ensure litigation is avoided. Check out the ACAS Code of Practice in this area together with Guidance documents which give great practical guidance. Our final session looked at the employment law developments over the year and the year ahead. The removal of fees (for the moment) to raise claims (etc) in the Employment Tribunal was perhaps one of the most significant developments which is likely to increase the amount of claims employers will have to face. That in itself ought to encourage employers to seek specialist employment law advice to manage the ongoing issues from recruitment to beyond the employment relationship. Employment status has also been a thorny topic together with the right to holiday pay and the potential right to backdate holiday pay claims to the commencement of work. The session also explored unfair dismissal and discrimination developments that affect employers on a day to day basis. The Mentoring Programme provides a fantastic forum to meet experts and practitioners and to seek to realise the potential of staff at all levels. Employment law is a fascinating subject that is fast paced with complex issues arising almost on a day to day basis. Ensuring you are kept up to date and have a responsive

(and good humoured) expert on hand to help negotiate the legal maze is extremely valuable. There is no doubt that 2018 will continue to yield more case law and statutory developments in employment law. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Maybe treating yourself to a Christmas present of sound expert employment law advice and support will be the gift that keeps on giving. College launches first of its kind Skills Survey West College Scotland will be kicking off 2018 by launching the West of Scotland Skills Survey, the first research of its kind to be conducted by a Scottish college or university. In the last four years, the College has built strong relationships with employers across the West region – helping them become more productive by having the right people, with the right skills, in the right jobs. Looking to the future, the College is determined to consolidate our success in using our position as a regional leader to support innovation and growth. Launching in January 2018 and running until March, the West of Scotland Skills Survey will gather the views and experiences of employers in the West region – focussing on their skills, workforce and business support needs. The findings of the sector-leading approach to research and employer engagement will then be used to better inform the work of the College and our efforts to help tackle the challenges facing businesses across the region, such as skills shortages. The new initiative is one way that the College is working with business to shape, develop and deliver our curriculum, skills provision and student experience. Audrey Cumberford, WCS Principal, said: “As Scotland’s largest college and a leader in the region we serve, the College is committed
to working with partners and employers to build a modern workforce, sustain a thriving economy and help people achieve their potential. “The West of Scotland Skills Survey is just one way that we are engaging with employers across our region to ensure that the West is able to overcome the challenges and grasp the opportunities of a competitive global economy.” Bob Grant, Chief Executive of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, added: “The West of Scotland Skills Survey gives employers across Renfrewshire the opportunity to have their voice heard, to shape the College curriculum and to help build a modern workforce. I’d urge all local employers – no matter how big or small they are – to participate in this important work.”

Scotland has taken a global lead in harnessing the potential of social enterprise, and hosting SEWF again in 2018 coincides with the publishing of recent strategies tailored to support internationalisation of and for Scottish social enterprises. There is organic growth in ‘social enterprise’ which may be broadly summarised in global terms as putting social – or community – values into trading. In Scotland, and indeed the UK, ‘social enterprise’ can be summarised and tends to be defined by reference to involvement of legal structures which “lock in” assets and surpluses for the social/a community’s good. Growth in social enterprise is being driven by: • An increase in entrepreneurs aiming for more than just profit • A desire amongst a number of global governments to drive benefits to communities or social benefits through economic activity • Recognition by the financing community that financing social enterprise, whether in support of UN social development goals or otherwise, is compatible with their core values and business.
MacRoberts Partner Duncan Osler, who was in New Zealand speaking at the SEWF 2017 in Christchurch, said: “Having advised CEiS for a number of years, we are delighted to be on board as a sponsor for an event that celebrates and promotes creating a better Scotland through decreasing inequality, tackling poverty head on and energising communities. 6 key ways to reach new customers using social media Small businesses can undoubtedly reach new customers using social media. This is one of the key elements that draws SMEs to social media marketing, though there is a host of other benefits too. Here we’ll look at some of the methods behind the madness, and offer our top tips on how to acquire new customers through your social media platforms. Enjoy! Why is social media great for customer acquisition? Currently, there are 2.46 billion social media users worldwide. Employing social media marketing techniques means that your small business can (theoretically) reach them all. Social media gives SMEs access to a huge potential customer base, the trick is to target segments of it effectively and build brand awareness. This might sound like a daunting task, but don’t worry, we’ve got some great advice: The top 6 ways to reach new customers using social media: 1. Choose the right platforms There’s no point in talking to an empty room – identify the platforms your target audience uses, and post to those. For younger customers, use Instagram and Snapchat; for slightly older clients, or B2B, try Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. 2. Communicate with your customers We know what you’re thinking: “how does talking to my existing customers help reach new ones?” You have to remember that social media is a public forum. Anything you say to one customer can be seen by all their followers. Present a positive online persona by providing information, entertaining content, and personalised messages, and you will quickly attract new followers. 3. Host events Social media events are a great way to
Gary Ennis, Founder and Managing Director of NSDesign Ltd
attract new customers. By hosting livetweeting sessions, asking questions, or even holding competitions, you’ll create a buzz around your brand that will reach beyond your current followers. Just make sure your event is relevant to your brand/offering and you’ll be onto a winner. 4. Pick the right hashtags Lots of people search for hashtags about a subject, product, trend, company or even an entire industry. Align your hashtags with common searches so you’re at the top of a prospect’s list when they want more info. Use hashtags to connect with customers. There are approximately 500 million tweets posted per day, so chances are one might be about your brand/event, but you may not have been tagged. Make sure you don’t miss out on vital customer interaction by setting up regular Twitter searches for keywords associated with your brand. You’ll get alerts when someone mentions you, and you’ll be able to interact directly with prospective/
new customers. 5. Post relevant, exciting and engaging content The higher the quality of your content, the more shares you’ll get and the more people you’ll ultimately reach. Make sure you think outside of the box and provide engaging and entertaining content, as well as the educational stuff. Nothing grabs attention like carefullycrafted social media images, so why not use them in all of your posts to help you stand out in news feeds? 6. Use social media analytics Measure your performance using social media analytics. This will help you make decisions about your approach, and whether you need to adjust your social media strategy. So, that’s it – six key ways to acquire new customers through social media. Try them out today! For more information on how to reach new customers using social media, sign-up for our next Embrace the Space course, or talk to one of our team.

UWS and Alzheimer Scotland host first Annual Celebration Lecture Professor Debbie Tolson of UWS delivered the Alzheimer Scotland Centre for Policy and Practice’s inaugural Annual Celebration Lecture at the University’s Paisley Campus on 1st November 2017. Professor Tolson, who is Director of Alzheimer Scotland Centre for Policy and Practice (ASCPP) and Assistant Dean (Research and Enterprise) of the University’s School of Health, Nursing and Midwifery, delivered an address entitled ‘Listening, Learning and Leading: Advancing Dementia Practice’. The Annual Celebration Lecture honours the outstanding contribution of a person or persons to the work of ASCPP. The inaugural lecture was dedicated to two people; Henry and Anne Rankin who have together made a sustained and outstanding contribution to dementia education. As a newly retired police officer in his mid-fifties, Henry was diagnosed with vascular dementia. Henry is a member of the Scottish Dementia Working Group, campaigning with others who have dementia to uphold the rights and enhance the lives of all people experiencing dementia. In this role, he went from strength to strength, going on to chair the national group for some years. Anne is involved in many areas of work promoting involvement and helping others understand the perspectives of family members. Both Henry and Anne are activists and educationalists on the national and international stage, raising awareness, influencing policy, challenging stereotypes and providing hope for countless others who have dementia and the families, friends and professionals who support them. They are particularly respected because it is clear that they reflect their message to others in the way they live their own lives. Professor Tolson’s lecture addressed the fact that to advance dementia care we need to listen carefully to the both the loud and quiet voices. Henry and Anne Rankin have spoken many times about their experiences; they have challenged, inspired, and sometimes troubled, those who are listening. As well as listening there
is a need to review and refresh approaches to learning and invest in both practice based research and practitioner education research. In addition, to drive the change agenda and achieve effective delivery there is a need to strengthen strategic and professional leadership capabilities and capacity. Professor Tolson drew on recent research, innovative pedagogy and reflections on prudent dementia policy, she illustrated the importance of listening to individuals affected by dementia and their family and of the essential contribution of experience based approaches to learning and research involvement needed to propel advances in practice and improve experiences of care. The event also saw Henry and Anne Rankin being presented with a UWS Celebration Medal, which recognises those who have inspired the University in its scholarship, studies or in some way have made a demonstrable impact on the way UWS, and others, respond to dementia. The event also showcased and celebrated the successes to date of the partnership between UWS and Alzheimer Scotland. It featured a number of short presentations by colleagues on the partnership and previous collaborative projects, culminating in the Celebration Lecture. Professor Debbie Tolson said: “Both Henry and Anne Rankin are truly inspirational individuals, who have made a sustained and outstanding contribution to dementia education, and I was delighted and honoured to have delivered the first Annual Celebration Lecture. “It was great to be able to recognise the remarkable contribution of Henry and Anne Rankin to our Centre and thank them for the inspiration and motivation they afford each and every one of us as we endeavour to ensure no one faces dementia alone.” Dementia is the biggest health and social care challenge faced by society today. There are around 90,000 people living with dementia in Scotland and around 3,200 are under the age of 65. By the year 2020 there will be more than 1 million people living with dementia in the UK. Alzheimer
Professor Debbie Tolson
Scotland is passionate that nobody should face dementia alone. Professor Craig Mahoney, UWS Principal and Vice-Chancellor, said: “At UWS we are committed to making an important and lasting contribution to society and our collaborative work with Alzheimer Scotland impacts positively on those living, and caring for a loved one with, dementia. I am immensely proud of the Centre and the University was privileged to be able to mark the significant contribution of Henry and Anne Rankin who are truly positive examples for us to follow.” The University is a leader in the field in the Scottish higher education sector for dementia-related teaching and research. The Alzheimer Scotland Centre for Policy and Practice at UWS provides a high quality environment for applied research, education and enterprise. It is a centre of excellence, advancing dementia policy and practice through education and applied research in Scotland and beyond. This inaugural event was a celebration of the close partnership between UWS and Alzheimer Scotland. UWS and Alzheimer Scotland recently signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement and this annual event came about thanks to this formal agreement. Henry Simmons, Chief Executive of Alzheimer Scotland, said: “Henry and Anne Rankin have both influenced the dementia policy and practice landscape in Scotland in recent years and their commitment and dedication to help improve the lives of people living with dementia and their families and carers has been remarkable. I am delighted that UWS recognised their joint efforts in such a significant way through this honour and the award of this Celebration Medal.”

UWS and The Alliance establish Strategic Partnership University of the West of Scotland and The Alliance have established a Strategic Partnership Agreement. The Alliance is the national third sector intermediary for a range of health and social care organisations and this partnership builds on its close links with UWS. UWS and The Alliance are key organisations in the field of health and social care in Scotland and each is committed to working collaboratively with the other to support the achievement of their respective strategic objectives. This new Partnership will see both organisations focus resources on shared priority areas. These primarily concern a joint commitment to build knowledge and capacity; increase collaborative working to influence policy; and provide leadership to shape practice in health and social care. The partnership will also explore the potential for future research links and joint research projects. Professor Paul Martin, CBE, Depute Principal of UWS, said: “We are delighted to be establishing this important partnership with the Alliance. This partnership formalises the strong links we enjoy with this important organisation, which plays such a key role in the health and social care in Scotland.” The Alliance’s vision is for a Scotland where people of all ages who are disabled or living with long term conditions, and unpaid carers, have a strong voice and enjoy their right to live well, as
equal and active citizens, free from discrimination, with support and services that put them at the centre. The ALLIANCE has over 2,100 members including large, national support providers as well as small, local volunteer-led groups and people who are disabled, living with long term conditions or providing unpaid care. Ian Welsh, OBE, Chief Executive of the ALLIANCE, said: “We are pleased to be establishing this strategic partnership between the ALLIANCE and UWS. The ALLIANCE and UWS have worked together on a range of projects and we are delighted to be deepening and strengthening this partnership.”

UWS hosts events to celebrate 120 year anniversary Dame Elish Angiolini, Chancellor of University of the West of Scotland, unveiled a bust of Peter Brough, a founding benefactor of the institution, as part of its 120 year anniversary celebrations at an event on 10 October 2017. The bust of Peter Brough was made by Professor Alexander Stoddart, Sculptor in Ordinary to Her Majesty The Queen in Scotland, whose studio is based on the University’s Paisley Campus. The event formed part of the University’s celebrations to mark 120 years since the foundation of the institution in 1897. In addition to being the anniversary of the founding of Paisley Technical School, 2017 also marks 25 years since the granting of university status as University of Paisley and 10 years since the University merged with the former Bell College to become University of the West of Scotland. Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS, said: “We are delighted to have unveiled this bust of Peter Brough as part of our 120 year anniversary celebrations. “At UWS we are extremely proud of our history and what we have achieved over the last 120 years and it is great to be able to recognise the hugely important role philanthropists such as Peter Brough played in the creation of the institution. Our year of celebration enables us to recognise our significant achievements and the rich legacies on which we are built as well as looking forward to achieving our long-term ambitions.” This event is just one of a series of events UWS hosted as part of
Sandy Stoddart, Dame Elish Angiolini and Prof Mahoney
its anniversary celebrations. From Wednesday 11 October to Friday 13 October 2017 at its Paisley Campus the University ran events which celebrate sport, the arts, the University’s students and its alumni. Professor Craig Mahoney added: “We are delighted by the response we have had to these events, which are an important part of our anniversary celebrations, with alumni from around the world set to attend. Events such as these give us a great opportunity to showcase our talent and provide opportunities for staff and students to engage with our alumni and key stakeholders and to forge new and exciting relationships.”

Looking for a job that makes a difference to the world we live in? Thermo Fisher Scientific are recruiting now
The global leader in serving science is recruiting for a number of positions based at their Inchinnan facility near Glasgow. Thermo Fisher Scientific are dedicated to helping to make the world a healthier, cleaner and safer place. And you could also make a difference by joining their talented team. The US-based biotechnology company are recruiting for a variety of roles at their Inchinnan facility from production and manufacturing to sales and accountancy. With more than 3,000 jobs available across the organization globally, they’re looking for candidates with varied skill sets here in Scotland. We spoke to operations and site leader Jim Carswell, 48, to find out about his working day with Thermo Fisher Scientific, where he has been employed for the last 27 years. Can you tell us about Thermo Fisher Scientific? Thermo Fisher Scientific is the world leader in serving science, with revenues of more than $20 billion and approximately 65,000 employees globally. Our mission is to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. We help our customers accelerate life sciences research, solve complex analytical challenges, improve patient diagnostics, deliver medicines to market and increase laboratory productivity.
How did you get involved in the industry? I joined the company as a trainee programmer in the IT department in 1988. After working in IT for 13 years, in Scotland and the USA, I moved into the operations side of the business, with responsibility for supply chain and manufacturing, before taking over site leadership. They say that outside of compensation, three things motivate people: autonomy, mastery and purpose. I have worked in the aerospace and clothing industries, but I think the purpose we have at Thermo Fisher Scientific, in the life science industry, is very compelling, and that’s what attracted me. Our customers are doing truly amazing things with our products and services. What sort of training/qualifications did you need? I left school and went into an engineering apprenticeship, before moving into IT. I managed to achieve a BSc in computing science, from Paisley University (now UWS) part-time over five years. Later, as I moved into operations, I achieved an MBA from Strathclyde University over four years, studying part-time. Studying while you are working is hard, but I think it gives you the best of both worlds. What’s a typical day like? As an operations and site leader, my day is taken up with a range of meetings and Gemba walks, ranging from the very strategic (looking five years out) to the very tactical (reviewing yesterday’s performance). I think it’s important for any leader to balance their time in this way. Favourite part of the job? There are three things: 1 I’m passionate about continuous improvement. It’s critical that an organisation reviews it’s performance regularly and identifies countermeasures for sub-optimal results. It’s also important that this happens at all levels
Jim Carswell, Operations & Site Leader, Thermo Fisher
of the organisation. At Thermo Fisher Scientific, we use Lean tools to manage continuous improvement, and develop flawless execution. 2 As a site leader, my main focus is employee engagement, and in this capacity I’m pushing our employees to get involved in helping our communities and to inspire kids into STEM subjects. This part of my job gives me energy. 3 In addition to my site operations responsibilities, I also represent manufacturing on a cross functional European leadership team. I enjoy partnering with other functions, like the commercial teams, to help grow the business. Any advice for someone thinking about a career in this industry? The life sciences is an extremely dynamic and rewarding industry to be in. Operations is also a very fulfilling career, having the opportunity to design, manufacture and deliver value to customers. You also don’t need to be a scientist. At Thermo Fisher Scientific, there are a huge amount of sites and roles, and so there are many opportunities to grow your career. Linwood Once More! Following a £400,000 restoration programme, the owners of St James Business Centre Squarestone relaunched the newly refurbished building in November 2016. Since the relaunch, most office suites have been snapped up, with only a limited number of suites still available to let. The business centre has welcomed 13 new local and national businesses and worked with many existing tenants to accommodate their business expansions, with vacancy now at 8%. Owners Squarestone have continued to make improvements to the building and the working environment for the tenants of St James Business Centre and the wider St James Business Park. Renfrewshire Council have recently granted planning permission for the development of a Tim Hortons Café and Bakery on St James Business Park. The amenities of the Park will be greatly improved once open in June 2018 and will improve consumer choice south of Linwood Road for the local community.
In addition to the employment created through the development, the opening of the coffee shop and drive through on Linwood Road will boost local employment by creating 25 direct new jobs for the community. Yasemin McClelland, Asset Manager of St James Business Park commented: “We are delighted that planning permission has been granted for the new Tim Hortons Café and Bakery adjacent to the Business Centre. It has been one of many steps we have taken to provide an attractive home for national companies and local businesses since acquiring the Business Park in 2015. The refurbishment of the building and works in the wider park have led to a number of new businesses choosing St James Business Park as the home for their companies, while existing tenants have committed to the park by expanding their businesses at the location. Providing all-inclusive flexible modern office space at competitive rates with no hidden costs and free parking, St James Business Park is an
obvious choice for local and national businesses. We are able to accommodate anything from a 2 person office to a 20,000 sq ft HQ office across our four buildings. With our proximity to the motorway and Glasgow Airport, we are certain that the addition of a Tim Hortons on the park will make St James
an even more attractive offer for businesses looking to be located in Renfrewshire and we are delighted that Renfrewshire Council shared our vision to put Linwood back on the map as a prospering economic area.” For information on current availability please visit www.stjamesbusinesscentre. co.uk or call 0141 887 4545.

Highlights of business community engagement for 2021 Alan McNiven Engaging Support
Paisley Pattern People
Paisley was the only Scottish place on the shortlist for the UK City of Culture 2021 competition alongside Stokeon-Trent, Sunderland, Swansea and Coventry, which took the title. Paisley 2021 saw significant support from the business community. Your Chamber was at the forefront of encouraging our members to back the bid and you responded in magnificent fashion. Be in no doubt, your outstanding support caught the eye of the judging panel. Over 200 companies formally backed the bid and 15 private sector organisations, including the Chamber, pledged £300,000 to support the run up to 2021 if successful. Bob Grant, Chief Executive of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Thank you to the business community throughout Renfrewshire and beyond who demonstrated outstanding support for the biding process over the last two years. The strength of the bid was greatly enhanced by your commitment and pledges. “The outcome is of course disappointing, however we are in a great position compared with two years ago. Our public and private sector partnerships are far stronger and there’s so much goodwill and momentum created by the bidding process. This is a great opportunity to capitalise on that enthusiasm and renewed confidence for the good of the visitor economy, tourism and town centre economy.”

European first as SCC moves to Strathclyde Business School The Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) and Strathclyde University have agreed a ground-breaking strategic alliance and collocation, the first of its kind in Europe. SCC’s move from its offices in the Merchants House of Glasgow in George Square to a suite in the newly refurbished Business School building on the city’s Cathedral Street was made as part of a two-way knowledge and skills transfer partnership between the two leading Scottish institutions. Planned as part of a strategic expansion of SCC’s capabilities, the move will connect Strathclyde Business School’s award-winning research capacity and leading edge teaching faculty to a network of 26 regional Chambers of Commerce across Scotland, comprising a membership of 11,000 ambitious SME companies. The announcement follows a highly successful year for both Scottish organisations. Strathclyde Business School was named Business School of the Year in the 2016 Times Higher Education Awards and reopened its building following a £23 million refurbishment. Scottish Chambers of Commerce Network signed major alliances across the globe, opening their first outreach office in Shandong Province in China. The collocation cements the place of the University and the Chambers of Commerce at the heart of Glasgow’s Innovation District. The Business School and the Scottish Chambers of Commerce will lead, in collaboration with Chambers throughout Scotland, a series of focused initiatives to help Scottish businesses increase their productivity, business management and growth and internationalisation targets. Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, said: “Our campus at Strathclyde is a hub for research, education, innovation and entrepreneurship. The collocation of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce with
Tim Allan, President of SCC
the Strathclyde Business School brings significant benefits and opportunities to both parties. “This strategic partnership with the Scottish Chambers of Commerce provides the foundation for our Business School to work throughout Scotland, in partnership with other business educators and local Chambers, to accelerate economic transformation in every region”. Tim Allan, President of SCC said: “This is a very exciting new alliance which injects academic expertise into Scotland’s most ambitious and creative business network. It is the first step in SCC’s wider ambition to shorten the distance between academia and business to our mutual benefit. “The Chambers already enjoy a close working relationship with the Fraser of Allander Institute based at Strathclyde University and we see this new alliance with the Business School as a model for
intended future academic collaborations. Mr Allan continued: “SCC is becoming more active in helping our members grow internationally and there is a lot we can learn from Scotland’s university sector, which has been internationally active for 500 years. To boost our penetration in key growth markets such as China, we are also looking to tap into the extraordinary global expertise and knowledge amongst the students and faculty of this internationally renowned and award-winning institution.“ The new premises boast a range of benefits and potential connections with other organisations including the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Scotland and the Strathclyde Entrepreneurial Network. The added connectivity will enable SCC to provide the Chamber Network, and its partners in the business community with enhanced service and increased opportunities for engagement.

GLASGOW AIRPORT INVESTS £1.4 MILLION TO INCREASE CENTRAL SEARCH AREA CAPACITY BY 20 PER CENT • Revamp follows recent £700k investment in state-of-the-art body scanners • Capacity to increase from 10 to 12 security lanes
Work on a £1.4million project to increase capacity in Glasgow Airport’s Central Search facility in the main terminal by 20% is now underway. The overhaul will see a complete reconfiguration of the entrance to the airport’s Central Search area which will increase the number of security lanes from 10 to 12.
Existing self-service boarding pass scanners will be relocated to a pre-search preparation area on the first floor at the top of the escalators with capacity doubled from five to 10. Two wider gates will also be installed to support passengers with restricted mobility as they pass through security. The first phase of the project commenced this month and will be completed by March 2018. Mark Johnston, Glasgow Airport’s Operations Director, said: “Providing our customers with a safe, convenient and reliable security experience is at the heart of everything we do. “Passengers travelling through the airport rightly expect a security procedure that is fast, efficient and friendly. This is a real asset to any successful airport and it’s an area I’m pleased to say we excel in. “The airport is fast approaching the 10-million passenger mark, so it was important to get ahead of the game by
Mark Johnston, Operations Director, Glasgow Airport
expanding the security facility. Our current satisfaction ratings sit at 99% of passengers moving through security in under 10 minutes. “We are confident this latest expansion will further improve performance, particularly during the peak travel times we are seeing more frequently as the airport continues to grow.” This is the most significant improvement work undertaken in Glasgow Airport’s centralised search area since it was opened in 2008 as part of a £31-million terminal extension programme.

It features members with a wealth of business experience encompassing a broad range of sectors, sizes and locations, with further representation covering education, research, trade unions, local authorities and the new South of Scotland enterprise agency. Economy Secretary Keith Brown welcomed the announcement as a significant step forward in adopting a new approach to the delivery of skills and business support. He said: “The Strategic Board for Enterprise and Skills will ensure that we are really maximising the benefits of our investment in Scotland’s businesses, innovators and entrepreneurs. “We are rightly proud of our reputation as a nation of innovators. The support provided through this investment is greatly valued and it is important that it is properly co-ordinated, and focused on the needs of users. “The members of the board have been chosen specifically for their expertise, both in their industrial and geographical areas.” The board is chaired by Nora Senior, who recently completed terms as Chair of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce and President of the British Chambers of Commerce. Ms Senior, who is UK chair of global
Audrey Cumberford, Principal & Chief Executive West College Scotland
communications firm Weber Shandwick, said: “It is time for a different way of looking at the enterprise and skills agenda, adopting a fresh approach and responding to changing economic, business and innovation needs. “With such an ambitious remit, it is essential for the board to feature a range of voices with a depth of knowledge and experience of Scotland’s economy. The calibre of members we have invited on to the board is hugely impressive, “I am confident that together we can build on the strengths of our system of enterprise and skills support, strengthen the links with other skills organisations and wider community to further drive inclusive growth and innovation across the country.” Audrey Cumberford said “I am delighted to have been asked to be a member of the new Board. The Scottish Government is clear about its ambition to make Scotland a more successful country through increasing sustainable and inclusive growth. Our enterprise and skills agencies are critical to achieving this and so it is vital that we maximise the impact of the collective investment we make in the development
of enterprise and skills in Scotland. Our universities and colleges clearly have a fundamental role and contribution to make in realising the Government’s ambitions and Economic Strategy. I look forward to what I am sure will be an exciting journey ahead. “ The full panel of the Strategic Board – • Wendy Alexander – University of Dundee • Karen Betts – Scottish Whisky Association • Liz Cameron – Scottish Chambers of Commerce • Mike Cantlay – Scottish Funding Council • Sara Carter – University of Strathclyde • Lorne Crerar – Highlands and Islands Enterprise • Audrey Cumberford – West College Scotland • Jeanette Forbes – PCL Group • Russel Griggs – South of Scotland Economic Partnership • Poonam Gupta – PG Paper Company • Steven Heddle – COSLA • Bob Keiller – Scottish Enterprise • John McClelland – Skills Development Scotland • Gerry McCusker – Dog Digital, Chair of BIMA Scotland • Scott McLarty – Spirit Aerospace • Grahame Smith – STUC

Renfrewshire Council Updates:
Science and enterprise deal boosts pupils’ future careers Bob Grant Chief Exec RCC, Tom Johnston, President RCC, Councillor Jim Paterson, Convener of Education and Children’s Services for Renfrewshire Council & pupils from Linwood HS
Young people have been getting to grips with science and business thanks to a productive partnership agreement to support enterprise in the area. More than 430 pupils from Renfrewshire schools got involved in science-led activities during the national Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fortnight as part of a partnership agreement between Renfrewshire Council and Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce. Both organisations have now signed a new three-year deal, building upon the last four years of supporting young people to meet businesses, learn about the world of work and support them to develop their careers. All Renfrewshire schools are signed up as members of the Chamber, which helps each school to build relationships with local businesses, go along to industryrelated events, and learn about enterprise. Pupils research local companies and ask questions during an organised employer event so young people can learn about the skills and qualifications required for that field of work.
Tom Johnston, President of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, said the Chamber is involved in a wider range of youth employment initiatives aimed to help tackle youth unemployment and support the local economy. He said: “The partnership with Renfrewshire schools is unique throughout the chamber network in Scotland. By working with our young people in this way employers can give their future workforce an insight into careers in different industries while allowing young people to understand more of the world of work and help develop skills around communication, team working, resilience and selfmanagement.” “The Chamber is delighted to renew our partnership with Renfrewshire Education for a further three years to continue this important work.” During STEM Fortnight, pupils from Woodlands Primary attended science sessions at West College Scotland, East Fulton pupils visited Doosan Babcock
in Renfrew, and 50 pupils from Linwood High School took part in DNA science workshops at Thermo Fisher. Other schools visits included trips to Royal Bank of Scotland, Boston Networks and Rolls Royce. Convener of Education and Children’s Services for Renfrewshire Council, Councillor Jim Paterson, added: “Giving pupils the opportunity to learn about careers in STEM subjects and in enterprise is vital to supporting future economy and helping them to be informed about the world of work. “Enterprise is part of the school curriculum and allows pupils to learn about how businesses work and the skills, qualifications and experiences they require for the career field they are interested in. “With all schools in Renfrewshire part of the Chamber’s network, teachers are able to link in with industry events and make connections with local businesses to develop learning experiences that further children and young people’s education.”

Renfrewshire Council Updates:
Widespread wifi to boost local business Businesses across Renfrewshire are set to benefit from a £1 million project to bring free, public wifi to Paisley, Johnstone and Renfrew town centres. Phase 1 of the project was recently completed, with new service provider Boston Networks upgrading all existing wifi hotspots in public buildings, paving the way for further expansion into multiple indoor and outdoor locations. Renfrewshire Council Depute Leader Jim Paterson said the £1 million system would draw in visitors and deliver more customers to local businesses. “This project is an important part of the Council’s Digital Strategy as it will drive economic growth and improve digital inclusion and participation across Renfrewshire,” he said. “People in our public buildings – including libraries and town halls – are
already enjoying a faster wifi service, with no need to log in or register. “Paisley’s Lagoon Centre, museum and InCube stores are among the 25 public and community buildings to have the new wifi, with more venues to be added to the network in the future.” Paisley’s reputation as a student-friendly town will be further enhanced during Phase 2 of the wifi expansion with the introduction of Eduroam. “Eduroam is an international roaming service that will give students from anywhere in the world the ability to view educational resources stored securely on their internal networks,” Councillor Paterson said. “It will be an honour to see Paisley become one of the first towns in the UK to provide this facility when it’s launched next year.”

Chief Executive of Boston Networks Scott McEwan said: “We’re thrilled to complete the first phase of the contract to deliver robust and high speed wifi access to public buildings across Renfrewshire. “By working closely with Renfrewshire Council, we’re now on track to deliver the next project milestone, which will see public wifi rolled out to offer free internet access in Johnstone, ahead of schedule.” Johnstone is targeted to be the first town centre to have wifi accessibility complete by December 2017, with Paisley and Renfrew on track for completion by Spring-2018.

Renfrewshire Council Updates:
Business leaders welcome National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland to Renfrewshire
L-R) Garry Train - Manufacturing Executive, Rolls Royce, Finance Minister Derek Mackay, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon & Martin Ford - Production Leader, Rolls-Royce
Renfrewshire’s business community has welcomed the news that Scotland’s National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland (NMIS) will be established in Renfrewshire. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon yesterday (Monday 11 December) announced the industry-led institute will be built on Abbotsinch Road, next to Glasgow Airport, and will become the anchor tenant of a new 130-acre business and manufacturing innovation district in Renfrewshire. A collaborative project between the Scottish Government and national skills and enterprise agencies together with the University of Strathclyde and Renfrewshire Council, the Institute will bring together skills, expertise, research and innovation to attract investment and develop Scotland into a global leader in advanced manufacturing. The enabling infrastructure of roads, bridges, cycleways and pedestrian routes are being delivered by Renfrewshire Council through the £39.1million Glasgow Airport Investment Area project, funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal.
Chair of Renfrewshire’s Economic Leadership Panel, Audrey Cumberford, feels the new institute will allow Renfrewshire to realise its economic potential. She said: “Choosing Renfrewshire as the base for the National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland is a clear indication of the area’s potential to be a leading light in the global manufacturing sector. “The levels of private investment this could bring to Renfrewshire cannot be underestimated and this will provide a substantial boost to the area’s economic growth. “The investment, combined with the significant improvement to infrastructure in the area, will be a key contributor in making Renfrewshire a more attractive, vibrant and sustainable place to live, work, visit and invest in.” Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, Bob Grant, has also welcomed the announcement citing the promise of thousands of new jobs coming into the area. He said: “It is fantastic that
Renfrewshire has been chosen as the home for the National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland and it is recognition of our growing position within the international manufacturing sector. “Thousands of highly-skilled jobs are set to be created across the next 20 years in a boost to employment across the area, while also providing an opportunity to inspire young people into an exciting and rewarding career within the industry. “New and existing businesses in the area will feel the benefit of the increase in skilled workers in Renfrewshire, as well as the expertise and technological advances the institute brings, as it aims to allow Scotland to compete globally in manufacturing.” The announcement builds on the recent development of the £8.9million Lightweight Manufacturing Centre, set to open in May 2018 at the Doosan Babcock site in Westway, Renfrew. The centre will develop new manufacturing processes for lightweight materials for the aerospace and automotive industries.

Renfrewshire Council Updates:
New Approach to Menswear in Renfrewshire Josef McFadden is a textile business that designs and creates luxury printed and knitted products for the menswear fashion market – the brand was established in early 2016 to create original statement prints using locally sourced suppliers and ethically sound products. One of our new InCube designers, Josef McFadden has a wealth of talent as an artist, designer & illustrator – here’s what he had to say about starting up a business & the challenges facing young entrepreneurs. Why launch your own label? I studied print in the Scottish Borders, at the Heriot-Watt School of Textiles and Design. When I finished my studies and was looking at getting a job, there didn’t seem to be many opportunities that offered much creative freedom. I’m really not a commercial designer that can churn out 20 patterns a day. I like to spend weeks drawing and painting. The only real option was to start my own business, and this is where Josef McFadden came from: the desire to create art. That’s also who the brand is for: people who appreciate the craft and are looking for something, that you really can’t find anywhere else. Being bold in how you dress shows confidence and self assurance. Injecting some fun can really shake up your outlook, and how other perceive you – we want to be a brand that helps men project their personality into their appearance and create a strong impression. What’s been the biggest challenge for you in starting a business ? The operational side of setting up a fashion business. I’m a typical creative – I love designing but when it comes to financial forecasting, sales channels, buying seasons, courier contracts it’s been difficult. Having the support from InCube has been great – it’s really helped me focus & the new skills & knowledge I’m gaining will help to make my business grow & become fully sustainable. What are your plans for 2017? We’re just about to launch at the InCube shop and are exploring some exciting retail
opportunities. We’re still doing florals and abstracts, have recently added a knitwear accessories range and there will be other new products to follow. We are looking at shirts and suits in our clothing, small leather goods in accessories, and maybe even into some interiors. I’m definitely excited to see where we are going to be next year. What challenges do you feel you face as a menswear designer? As a small designer the biggest challenge is competing with the high street. If I had the ear of everyone in the country for a
moment I would try and make them see how important it is that they buy from companies like ours. Shopping with small companies is an investment into talent, it’s better for the economy, and it supports livelihoods. Guaranteed if everyone swapped one purchase a year for a small local company, it would change the face of fashion. The Josef McFadden website is at http:// josefmcfadden.com/ and will products will shortly be available from InCube Shop, 9B Gilmour Street, Paisley. Renfrewshire Council Updates: People of Paisley thanked for ‘incredible effort’ after UK City of Culture 2021 decision The team behind Paisley’s bid to be named UK City of Culture 2021 have thanked the town for its ‘incredible effort’. Paisley was the only Scottish place to be shortlisted alongside Coventry, Stoke-on-Trent, Sunderland and Swansea in the competition organised by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. As Coventry was named the winner live on BBC’s The One Show in front of millions of viewers, Paisley 2021 Bid Director Jean Cameron sent her congratulations and added: “We are of course heartbroken not to win the title as we know how much the people of the town poured into this – but at the same time those hearts are bursting with pride at what Paisley achieved in the past two years. She added: “More than 34,000 people – equivalent to almost half of Paisley’s population – added their voices and ideas to the town’s bid….and our thanks go to every single one of you for an incredible effort and those ideas will still be taken forward.” Renfrewshire Council leader and chair of the Paisley 2021 Partnership Board, Councillor Iain Nicolson added: “We were very much in it to win it – but the disappointment of missing out is eased by knowing how much stronger we are for taking part.
“The bid was part of a bigger plan to use Paisley’s unique cultural and heritage assets to make it a key destination for visitors and events while reigniting the creativity spark which is in our DNA – and while winning the bid would have accelerated the journey, that journey will continue.”

BAKER STREET PAISLEY WINS “FUTURETOWN” DESIGN AWARD An innovative plan for a film and arts space at Paisley’s Baker Street has been overwhelmingly voted by the public as winner of the national “FutureTown” Design Competition. Plans to transform a derelict site at Smithhills Street, close to Gilmour Street station, into a new cultural quarter include a flexible 500 seat theatre space and 5 mini-screen film theatre - GFT/ Grosvenor in style with 170 to 70 seats. A new destination; a new place will be created featuring indoor and outdoor spaces that will make full use of the space to create something truly special. The new building (designed by award winning architects Stallan Brand) features light cannons designed to create a new skyline silhouette mirroring the famous Paisley Skyline in a contemporary way. Paisley has no better location or possess the imagination and transformational potential than Baker Street. Gary Kerr, Chairman, Paisley Community Trust “We’re totally thrilled for Paisley to win this competition. It’s terrific to see Baker Street Paisley gain widespread recognition and endorsement through a national competition. A massive thank you to everyone in Paisley, Scotland and further afield who voted for Paisley to win. What we are creating is everyone’s. A facility, venue, space and hub for the community to use. “As we move into our next phase; we’re asking everyone to take Baker Street Paisley forward to the next level with
financial backing. Local and national government as well as Paisley supporting businesses and individuals will all have a part to play. Now is the time to get behind Baker Street Paisley – we’d be delighted to hear from you if you can help.” The competition, now in its third year, invites organisations and members of the public to submit sketches, photographs and short written descriptions of how urban spaces could be renewed. After receiving applications, Scotland’s Towns Partnership shortlisted entries, and the winner was decided by a public vote held during Scotland’s Towns Week, 20 26 November 2017. Over 3,000 votes were cast, with Paisley’s entry receiving 43% of these. There were 12 entries in total with Paisley coming out as the winner amongst entries from places such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dunoon and Falkirk. Phil Prentice, Chief Officer of Scotland’s Towns Partnership, said: “The FutureTown Design Competition, now in it’s third year, is all about stimulating conversations and provoking ideas to highlight what a possible future town could look like”. “As our communities strive to meet the challenges of the 21st century, the competition asks: how can town centres stimulate low carbon and sustainable living; encourage digitally-driven tourism; promote culture, health and

well-being; deliver connectivity and economic growth, and become places of opportunity and choice for all?” “I’d like to congratulate Paisley Community Trust for their winning entry, which proved very popular with the voting public. Their proposal for a performing arts / film theatre and academy shows how culture can be harnessed to create the ‘future history’ of Scotland’s towns.” Paisley Community Trust now has the opportunity to present their idea to stakeholders in town planning and regeneration from diverse organisations at Scotland’s Towns Partnership’s AGM in 2018. Scotland’s Towns Partnership is the national ‘go to’ body for towns: representing and promoting the diversity of the country’s towns and places, and supporting those organisations and groups that have an interest in or ownership of them. www.facebook.com/paisleytrust/ Twitter: @PaisleyTrust www.facebook.com/bakerstreetpaisley/ Twitter: @BakerStPaisley

Iconic Russell Institute in Paisley scoops prestigious architecture award One of Paisley’s most iconic buildings has received a prestigious award for conservation following a £5m restoration project. The category A-listed Russell Institute has received this year’s coveted Conservation Award from the Glasgow Institute of Architects (GIA) for a refurbishment funded by Renfrewshire Council, the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund and Historic Environment Scotland. It was one of just eight projects to be recognised in the annual awards programme of the charity, which runs competitions based around themes of towns, cities and neighbourhoods. In its citation, the GIA described the project as ‘a clever re-use of this important 1920s listed building which has been brought back to its former glory’ and said it had been ‘executed with great skill.’ The work at the Institute was sparked by the passion of local volunteers in the Paisley Development Trust and it also received a Commercial Commendation for its design in the office, commercial, retail and industry category from the GIA. Designed by Glasgow based architects Elder and Cannon, the restoration is part of a wider project to revitalise Paisley Town Centre. The former health centre officially reopened its doors in August and is now home to Skills Development Scotland and the Council’s Invest in Renfrewshire employability team. It houses around 120 employees, including careers and employability staff helping unemployed people across Renfrewshire and works closely with local businesses to create further jobs and grow the local economy.
Main contractors CBC Ltd were charged with ensuring the distinctive features of the Institute were retained,, from the ornate sculptures on the outside of the building, to its stunning staircase and interior balcony.
Renfrewshire Council Depute Leader, Councillor Jim Paterson said: “It’s great news that the restoration of such an iconic building has been recognised in this way and I’d like to thank everyone involved in the project. “The revamp was carefully planned to preserve the institute’s architectural features but to also ensure it stays fit for purpose for the 21st century and is preserved for future generations. “It’s a building that is important to the local community and its new role as a Skills and Employability Hub means that it is now helping generate new jobs and opportunities for the people of Renfrewshire.”
Megan Leishman, Grants Officer at Historic Environment Scotland, said: “We’re delighted that the hard work and effort of all those involved with the restoration of the Russell Institute has been recognised with this award. “It is vital that we preserve our historic environment to help regenerate local areas, and we are pleased to have helped give a new lease of life to this iconic, A-listed landmark for the Paisley community through our Historic Environment Repair Grant Fund.” The institute is a key part of a range of projects and initiatives to bolster business and drive people back to Paisley town centre, including the town’s bid for UK City of Culture 2021. Paisley has been shortlisted alongside Coventry, Stoke-on-Trent, Sunderland and Swansea with a decision expected from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport which organised the competition, in December. A new publicly-accessible museum store is also preparing to open in a previously-empty unit on Paisley High St and there are plans for a new £5m Cultural & Learning Hub housing the Paisley Central Library as well as a £42m revamp of Paisley Museum. MSP Kevin Stewart, Minister for Local Government and Housing said: “I was delighted to attend to the official opening of the Russell Institute and see first-hand the fantastic restoration of this iconic building in the heart of Paisley. I’d like to congratulate everyone involved and whose hard work has been recognised by these well-deserved awards. “The project is a great example of how we can use existing assets to regenerate our town centres and support local communities.”

MAKING TAX DIGITAL The move towards a digital tax system was first announced in the 2015 Budget, with a timeline said to be implemented from April 2018. Following calls that this timetable was too rushed, Making Tax Digital was taken out of the initial 2017 Finance Bill, before being reintroduced with initial changes in a second Finance Bill. Businesses and landlords will be given a longer period of time to adapt to these significant changes. The main changes introduced were as follows: • Businesses over the VAT turnover threshold of £85,000 will need to use compatible software to report quarterly for VAT purposes from April 2019 • Businesses will not be required to record or report income tax, NICs or corporation tax until at least 2020 Companies above the VAT threshold will already be filing their VAT returns quarterly and more than likely electronically, meaning that for many these initial changes will be a relatively small step further in the digital direction. VAT
registered traders will need to have compatible software in place by April 2019. How Milne Craig can support you through the digital transition: At Milne Craig, we always look to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to digital. This combined with our wealth of tax experience, puts us in the perfect position to help our clients deal with this transition. In order to meet VAT reporting requirements by the deadline, it is important to make sure you have the correct accounting software tailored to your needs and goals. We have supported our clients in the use of a number of systems, including Xero, Sage and many others. We can provide you with information on the reporting, training and recommendations that we can give to ensure you have the right system for your business. This is a radical change for many small businesses and it is important to be prepared. Implementing a system well in advance of the deadline helps to create a smooth transition, so that when Making
Tax Digital goes live you can avoid errors and make your submissions on time. The drive to digital is seen as an exercise in the electronic capture of data, that shift can be a positive step in enabling the regular review of financial performance. SCHOOL UPDATES:
Paisley school ‘ACEs’ community support St Paul’s Primary School in Paisley has thrown its support behind a new film that delves into the effect that stressful childhood experiences can have on health and behaviour in later life. The school recently held Renfrewshire’s first school community viewing of the film ‘Resilience’, a one-hour documentary that highlights the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Depute Head Teacher Anne Louise Nicholson said the school had been thrilled by the support shown by the diverse range of support services and organisations that attended the screening. “It was important to have a wide section of the school community attending the viewing because awareness of ACEs leads to early support being made available to our children,” Ms Nicholson said. “As the film says, what is predictable is preventable. “We were delighted to have representatives from the school, pupils’ families, social work, health, community police, Children’s Panel, Educational Psychology and the local clergy attend. “Local community groups – Families First, the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Young Carers, Homelink Service and Barnardos – all came along to host information stalls and lend their support.
“The discussion after the film brought up some fantastic suggestions of how we can all work together to help buffer the impact of ACEs.” On 14 November, the Renfrewshire Educational Psychology Service premiered ‘Resilience’ to staff from all Renfrewshire schools and pre-5 establishments at Johnstone Town Hall. Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Education and Children's Services Policy Board, Councillor Jim Paterson said the film had provoked important discussions about the vital role that schools can play in helping pupils to overcome the impact
of ACEs. “After seeing the film, many schools expressed an interest in hosting their own school community screening,” Councillor Paterson said. “I congratulate St Paul’s for holding the first community screening and hope their success will encourage other schools to hold similar events. “Ultimately I would like to see this film shown at all schools in Scotland to help make us an ACEs-aware nation.” ‘Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope’ was made by James Redford and produced by KPJR films.
