Welcome to our final Business Matters of 2016, the Winter Edition. As the year draws to a close this is a useful opportunity to reflect on some of the key achievements of your Chamber in the last year. • Chamber membership remains healthy at just under 600, with 70 new members joining in the last 12 months – welcome to you all. • Skills Ambassador Program delivered to every senior school in Renfrewshire: 28 ambassadors recruited to work with group of young people on coaching, inspiring confidence, cv building & interview skills over 6 months. • STEM fortnight offered 600 opportunities for young people with 10 companies offering activities. • B2B 2016 Business Matters in Renfrewshire saw 60 exhibitors at the Lagoon with 6 seminar speakers. • Our annual golf event – this year at Kilmacolm GC proved to be another sell out. • New networking events series Pitch & Roll sponsored by Hillington Park, further events planned early 2017. • Business Mentoring – 60 business mentor matches. • Meetings – 200+ bookings for our

meeting rooms. • Paisley 2021 for UK City of Culture Business Engagement. The Chamber is at heart of communicating the potential benefits of a winning bid to the wider business community, encouraging engagement and support for the bid. We also processed 11,000 export documents, the third most of any Chamber in Scotland which is a reflection of our strong exporting base in Renfrewshire. Speaking of international trade Scottish Chambers of Commerce has recently announced new funding from the Scottish Government to build international links. Scottish businesses will forge new global trading alliances thanks to this new support. The SCC network will receive up to £400,000 to deliver permanent trading alliances between Chambers in Scotland and the international network of Chambers, and to support new business-led trade missions. Our intention is to run a pilot project early next year to develop these relationships. And of course Rocco 2016 took place on Friday 18th November. With Main Sponsor Paisley 2021 a sell- out crowd of 500 people witnessed the presentation of 16 awards, hosted by

Fred Macaulay. You can read about the winners on page 24. Please continue to support your Chamber and make best use of our products & services. Finally my 2 year term as President draws to an end in December as I step down after our AGM. I have been honoured to serve as your President. Finally I would like to take time to thank Audrey for her two year term as our President. As many of you will know Audrey has a demanding role at

West College Scotland which has made her leadership and contribution to the Chamber all the more welcome. I am delighted Audrey wishes to remain on the Board to support us in the future. GLASGOW AIRPOR OFF WITH NEW LO

CONVIENTLY-located Courtyard by Marriott Glasgow Airport has celebrated the completion of its rebrand following the multi-million pound refurbishment of all its 114 bedrooms, reception space and conferencing, hospitality and leisure facilities. The Paisley hotel, on the doorstep of the airport and just 15 minutes’ drive from Glasgow city centre, has undergone the transformation after owner and operator Cairn Group dedicated a significant investment towards the rebranding. There has been a complete refit of the ground floor which includes the hotel’s restaurant and bar venue The Bistro, serving Starbucks coffee and hosting three media pods with curved seating booths and individual TV screens. A business centre has been created

within the lobby hosting two computer terminals with complimentary internet access and three meeting rooms for corporate clients. A fitness centre – brand new to the hotel’s offering – along with the complete rebranding has been officially unveiled at a launch event on 30 November 2016. Courtyard by Marriott’s ‘The Market’ concept has been introduced providing confectionery and refrigerated convenience products as well as chilled drinks and travel accessories to enjoy. The lobby has also seen the installation of welcome reception pedestals, designed to open up engagement with guests on their arrival and throughout their stay. The GoBoard, a Courtyard by Marriott unique concept, offers touchscreen technology enabling visitors to view the latest airport arrival and departure information, the most popular tourist

attractions and more at their fingertips. Heading up the team is general manager Matthew Hole who joined Cairn Group from Marriott in April 2016 to lead the hotel’s refurbishment, rebranding and beyond. Matthew said: “There are over 1,000 Courtyard by Marriott branded hotels globally making it the most dominant brand within the Marriott portfolio and the eighth largest brand globally, which is now gaining momentum in the UK.

There is a new arrival experience as the welcome pedestals allow hosts to easily join the guest in the lobby to help make their stay even more enjoyable.” As one of Europe’s fastest growing airports, 8.7 million passengers travelled through Glasgow Airport’s doors in 2015. The city itself is a popular conferencing location thanks to the likes of The SSE Hydro, SECC and the Armadillo, attracting thousands of delegates each year. Matthew added: “We can boast great accessibility with links not just to the airport but to Scotland’s motorways and Glasgow Central railway station so being able to print-off a boarding pass in our lobby, for instance, will add value for our guests. “For those visiting for leisure and tourism, we are located just twenty minutes from the shores of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, or a short distance to stunning sea views and world famous golf courses, making us an ideal base from which to explore Scotland.” Future plans for the Courtyard by Marriott Glasgow Airport comprise of the addition of 56 bedrooms to bring the total number at the property to 170 by mid-2017. Cairn Group is one of the UK’s premium hotel and bar operators. Today the Group owns and operates a portfolio of hugely successful businesses, including 31 hotels and more than 30 bars and restaurants across the UK from its headquarters in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Ingliston Country Club in the running for National Wedding Award A unique Renfrewshire wedding and hospitality venue has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award. Ingliston Country Club near Bishopton has been announced as one of the finalists in the ‘Wedding Venue of the Year – over £6,000 package’ category at The Scottish Wedding Confetti Awards. Scots firm to export innovative #DesignPopUp events to key UK regions doubling its 2017 exhibitions Scottish events innovators Double S Events is to export its roster of #DesignPopUp exhibitions to three new English regions making 2017 a landmark year for the Renfrewshire based company. Double S Events has already consolidated their collaborative pop-up showroom by showcasing emerging design trends from the UK’s market leaders to Scotland’s architecture and design community. Now they will take their #DesignPopUp brand to Newcastle, Nottingham and Bristol after forays into markets in Manchester and Birmingham scheduled for later this year. The #DesignPopUp was created by Double S Events Creative Director Sara Seravalli in 2014. The temporary showroom allows exclusive brands to exhibit their latest products and innovations to an architect and designer audience giving them the opportunity to experience and evaluate products without the need to travel to London. The exhibitions feature a series of workshops, seminars, private views and tailor-made meetings where developing design trends are on display. With the exceptional success of #DesignPopUp in Scotland, Sara has decided to expand the reach of the innovative A&D exhibition to key English regions in 2017. She said: “We are delighted to be expanding into new areas during 2017 while returning to the cities where we have enjoyed great success in introducing major exhibiting companies to these important architecture and design communities. “With six shows planned for 2017 we will be able to bring the very best in design

Similarly in Newcastle #DesignPopUp will exhibit in the Great Hall of the Discovery Museum from February 8th to10th, the Old Museum, Arkwright building at the Nottingham Conference Centre will be the #DesignPopUp for

the region from 15 to 17 March, while the Rosalind Franklin Room will host the #DesignPopUp in Bristol. Sara added: “Double S Events is delighted to be leading the way in creating major design events and initiatives across the UK. STILL GOING STRONG AFTER 50 YEARS My Father started Gordon Blyth (Insurance) Ltd in late 1966 and we have been based in Paisley ever since. We have never advertised before other than support ads for Clients but thought it important to shout about this milestone. If asked for a reason for our longevity, the answer is quite simple. We have top quality staff that care. The quality of service we provide is uppermost in our ethos. One call gets you to a qualified member of staff who will deal with you to the end of the process (large claims can take weeks to finalise). One named friendly person, no telephone options to press, no music while you wait. We also use IT for the benefit of clients. While this eases admin it also gives us access to

the best premium rates. In essence we combine IT and Old fashioned customer service to maintain our fantastic reputation. It is a clichÊ to say we are small enough to care and big enough to have clout, but in fact, it is true. It is a deliberate ploy to stay small and profitable rather than try and grow by acquisition, a boutique hotel with personal service as opposed to a chain. The time has come to think about adding another member of staff, with 10 or so years till retirement; succession planning has become important if we are to reach our 100th anniversary. Legionella: Do you know your responsibilities? Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia normally contracted when contaminated water droplets are inhaled. In the UK, it is the responsibility of the building owner to ensure that, at the very least, a legionella risk assessment has been completed. Partying, staff and employer liability Often employers believe that anything that happens outside working hours is not the concern of the employer. While that can be correct in some cases, care is needed, as a recent case has shown. When can an employer be liable for events that happen outwith the direct working environment? In the recently reported case of Bellman v Northampton Recruitment the English High Court has provided some useful and timely guidance as to the extent to which an employer can be liable for employee assaults at or following workplace events. The position in Scotland is similar and the legal issues arising from this case are relevant. In the case, after the employer’s Christmas party a number of staff returned to the hotel and continued drinking (and partying) well into the small hours. One of the employees was assaulted by a colleague (a director) around 3am. The employee suffered brain injury as a result. The question for

the court was whether the employer was liable for the injuries that were sustained. This case gives rise to questions of delictual liability rather than strict employment law but the judgment is an important reminder of the extent to which employers can be held liable for actions of employees. Many years ago this issue would have been decided by asking the question as to whether or not the employee’s acts were “within the scope of employment”. That test has now been overtaken by a more detailed analysis of the factual matrix and ultimately the Court has to be satisfied that the circumstances giving rise to the claim are sufficiently closely connected to the employment and that it is fair, just and reasonable to impose liability in the particular case. The judge considered the case law in this area and held that the employer would have been liable if the assault had happened during the party itself. As the act causing the loss occurred (well)

after the party had finished, the claim was dismissed and the employer was not liable, in law, for the losses the employee sustained. The judge provides a useful analysis of the law in this area and provides a timely reminder that liability does not automatically end when working hours cease. Diane Mitchell Music School

The Renfrewshire Community Gospel Choir had their first major performance along with the Jimmy Blair Accordion Orchestra on Friday the 4th of November at Wallneuk Parish Church. The concert, which was a celebration of gospel, contemporary and Scottish music, in support of the Paisley 2021 bid for city of culture, was a roaring success. The performers, who played to a huge crowd of 400 plus spectators at the concert, were exceptional and displayed the wealth of talent within the Renfrewshire area. The compere for the night was John Carmichael, who is one of the great characters of the Scottish music scene and one of the music’s most dedicated advocates through his work as a musician, performer, bandleader, television producer, accordion teacher and competition adjudicator. The first performer of the night was award winning classical guitarist Ross Wilson, a former pupil of Lochfield Primary and Glennifer High School who graduated with first class honours from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Next on stage were the Cardonald Primary School Choir, conducted by Diane Mitchell. The children captivated the audience with their cheerful rendition of ‘;When You’re smiling’ and “ When I grow Up “from Matilda. This was followed by a dynamic performance by newly formed acoustic duo Rebekah and David Sharpe. 21

year old Rebekah was born and bred in Paisley, an ex pupil of Lochfield Primary School and Glennifer High School and now a final year student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Talented 5-piece band Coda changed the atmosphere with their set of classic songs including ‘Proud Mary’ which had the audience singing and dancing in their seats. The Renfewshire community gospel choir were next on stage. The performance started with a beautiful solo rendition of ‘His Eye is on the Sparrow’ by musical director Emilie Boyd. The choir were in great voice, and had the audience clapping along to a selection of Gospel songs. The community choir was formed in January this year by Diane Mitchell, who had a vision for a community Gospel choir in the area, inclusive to all the community. Diane started her own music school in Brick Lane Studios in Paisley in January 2015 and already has a large number of children and adults attending for instrumental lessons and musicianship classes. The choir has grown from strength to strength and is always looking for new members. The final main performance of the night was the Jimmy Blair Accordion orchestra conducted by world famous and internationally renowned accordionist Gary Blair. The original orchestra was founded by Gary’s father in the early 1970’s. The orchestra was then reformed

under Gary in 2009, who brought together new talented accordionists to form the Jimmy Blair Accordion Orchestra. The orchestra also had the crowd singing along and dancing in their seats to some well known songs. For their final number, they were joined by Gordon Whyte on bag pipes, for a spine tingling rendition of Highland Cathedral. For the finale, the orchestra were joined by the Renfrewshire Community Gospel Choir, and the Cardonald Primary School Choir , for a performance of Amazing Grace and a rousing gospel medley. The concert was organised by Diane Mitchell on behalf of the Renfrewshire Community Gospel Choir, in an effort to raise awareness of new and up and coming talent within the Renfrewshire area. Diane said ‘The concert was a culmination of an idea that I had to promote Paisley’s bid for 2021 City of Culture, by bringing together a variety of performers from the area. The concert was a huge success, and due to the variety of the performances there was something for everybody. The concert provided a platform for new performers in the area to showcase their talent. I was thrilled to see everyone’s hard work pay off, and show the world that Paisley has talent. The whole evening was an uplifting experience and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. We now plan to make this an annual event, so look out for next year’s concert !”

HILLINGTON PARK LOOKS TO 2017 WITH ANTICIPATION

With eyes now firmly fixed towards another busy year in 2017, Hillington Park is also looking back on 2016 as a successful year of major developments. Three of the biggest new developments the Park has seen for many years – Evolution Court, the ‘motorcycle village’ and Taggarts Motor Group’s new Jaguar and Volvo dealerships – began apace on previously undeveloped land adjacent to

the M8 and at the entrance to the Park at junction 26. Finally, work on Taggarts Motor Group’s two new 35,000 sq ft modern showrooms began in October and is expected to complete before the end of 2017. The showrooms will house the relocated Jaguar and Volvo dealerships on a 4.78 acre site, highly visible to over 600,000 vehicles passing every week. The Park’s SPZ status (Simplified Planning Zone) has played a big part in the progress of other developments including Kooltech’s new 40,000sqft headquarters.

UWS playing a key role in delivery of new Scottish netball franchise UWS is playing a key role in the delivery of the Sirens, Scotland’s brand new and only professional netball team who will play in a UK-wide national league and generate international interest. The University is a key partner of the team, whose final line-up of players was announced on 21 October 2016. UWS involvement with the Sirens builds on the strong links it already enjoys with Netball Scotland, which was awarded one of ten team franchise places in the Sky broadcast 2017 Vitality Netball Superleague earlier this year. The Sirens are set to change the game with a superb global team of athletes and an experienced and determined management team. Based in the £113 million Emirates Arena in Glasgow, and supported by UWS, the Sirens are set to make a big impact from the outset. Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS, said: “The introduction of the Sirens franchise to the Vitality Netball Superleague is a hugely important development not just for netball but for sport, especially women’s sport, across Scotland. We are absolutely delighted that UWS will be playing such an important role in supporting this development and in creating success for the team over the coming seasons. The Sirens comprise an incredible group of athletes who I am sure will make a huge impact on the league when it gets underway in February 2017. The team includes eight athletes from Scotland, with a mixture of experience and young-gun talent, and a national athlete from Northern Ireland. But, the Sirens have also managed to secure three world-class netballing superstars - Jamaican internationals, Carla Borrego and Althea Byfield, as well as Ellen Halpenny from New Zealand - to help them to compete for the League title in year one. CEO of Netball Scotland Claire Nelson said: “We have worked hard to bring together this amazing team of players and back-room staff. I’d like to thank my team and our sponsors for their support. For the University the collaboration will help raise awareness of UWS in new markets, at home and internationally, and bring mutual benefits through brand association. 7.7% increase on November 2015 passenger numbers • EU scheduled traffic up by 25% Glasgow has reported its busiest November in 50 years after 666,338 passengers travelled through the airport’s doors last month, representing an annual increase of 7.7%. International traffic was up 14.9% on last year due to increased demand for winter sun destinations on Ryanair and Jet2 routes. EU scheduled services were up by 25% and there was a significant increase in traffic on Emirates and Virgin long-haul routes. Domestic traffic in November increased by 2.2% thanks to strong demand from both business and leisure travellers on London services, which included the mobilisation of thousands of Tartan Army fans travelling to Scotland’s World Cup 2018 qualifier against England at Wembley. Regional traffic was also boosted by strong performance from easyJet, Flybe and Loganair, while Celtic’s Champions League tie against Barcelona and Braehead’s hosting of the European

Curling Championships helped boost visitor numbers. Amanda McMillan, managing director at Glasgow Airport, said: “November was yet another record-breaking month and it has put us on course to close out what has been an extraordinary year for Glasgow Airport by carrying more than nine million passengers for the first time in our history. “So far we have recorded our best-ever passenger numbers in each month of our 50th anniversary year, which is a remarkable achievement. “Our efforts in attracting more than 20 new routes and services have been key to our success this year. We also consolidated our position as Scotland’s leading long-haul airport while simultaneously strengthening our European network of services. “December’s passenger numbers look promising and it’s very likely that we’ll make it 12 record months this year.

A digital art project which will create 7.3 billion unique Paisley patterns to support the town’s bid to become UK City of Culture, launched in November. The ambitious £25,000 project at Paisley Museum, funded by University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and Renfrewshire Council, is the final outcome of the inaugural UWS Paisley Digital Art Commission originated by UWS Creative Media Academy director Professor Nick Higgins and awarded to artist duo Vicky Isley and Paul Smith aka boredomresearch. Developed over a 12-month period, with the participation of the people of Paisley via three hands-on workshops – for pupils, students and older people - delivered by the artists in collaboration with the UWS Creative Media Academy, the resulting installation transforms the world-famous Paisley pattern for the digital age. Specially coded software has been created to generate digital patterns which are displayed on a high definition screen mounted within a 19th Century style weaving loom. Taking their inspiration from the museum’s world leading natural history collection, including the most celebrated catalogue of American avian life, Birds of America, the artists have created a unique live installation of digital organisms. Due to the billions of possible pattern combinations, each viewer will have a unique visitor experience whereby the pattern they witness will only ever be displayed once on the loom screen. In an innovative move, the University has made it possible for the first 1,000 visitors to have the opportunity to take home a unique printed pattern from the exhibit. Entitled ‘Paisley Pearls’, the artwork will remain on display at the museum until 15 January 2017. The duo behind boredomresearch, Vicky Isley and Paul Smith, recent winners of the 2016 Lumen Prize for the Moving Image, have work exhibited worldwide, including at the DAM GALLERY in Berlin and the House of Electronic Arts in Basel, Switzerland. Professor Nick Higgins said: “The Paisley pattern brought the town’s name and imagery to the farthest reaches of the world in the 19th century, now

boredomresearch are helping us bring our heritage into the digital age. “We are excited to welcome people from Paisley, the UK and beyond, to experience this digital reinvention of the iconic Paisley pattern and to be part of the bid to show that Paisley deserves to be City of Culture in 2021.” Boredomresearch artist Vicky Isley said: “We are greatly inspired by the mechanisms which give rise to the beauty present in nature. From the start of the UWS Paisley Digital Art Commission, we wanted to explore the diversity of the Paisley pattern alongside our research. “The ethos behind the project is about creating a real link between contemporary technology, and natural organisms while also playing homage to the Paisley pattern which has played a role in Paisley’s history for hundreds of years.” Renfrewshire Council leader Mark

Macmillan said: “Paisley Pearls brings together several elements Paisley is exceptionally good at - creativity, community engagement and digital innovation - and comes at a time when the town’s cultural assets are rising in profile. “UWS is a key part of Paisley’s bid for UK City of Culture 2021 and we would like to congratulate them on this initiative, which will allow visitors to the exhibit to experience a totally unique and modern interpretation of the Paisley Pattern and to take a little piece of ‘Paisley’ home with them.” The University’s heritage dates back to Paisley Technical College and School of Art, founded in 1897. Today, UWS is one of the sector leaders in digital technologies and plays a key role in enhancing the cultural life of Paisley. This free public exhibition will run at Paisley Museum until 15 January 2017.

Royal Bank of Scotland leads new project to boost business while tackling poverty in Scotland A ground-breaking initiative to encourage responsible business in Scotland has outlined its first set of priorities which have education and employability at their core as a means of significantly reducing poverty. The Scottish National Action Plan for Responsible Business (SNAP-RB) is being been launched by Business in the Community (BITC) Scotland with the support of Royal Bank of Scotland as a driver of business collaboration to create a fairer society, stronger economy and more sustainable communities. Unveiled at the bank’s historic home at St Andrew Square in Edinburgh, SNAP-RB highlighted its objectives for reducing poverty through improving educational experiences of all young people in Scotland and increasing employability by encouraging wider understanding of the skills and behaviours needed to futureproof the country’s workforce. Jane Wood, Managing Director of Business In The Community Scotland said: “The impacts of poverty are widespread. On a personal level, it affects child development and life chances; on an economic level, it reduces productivity, resilience and profit for everyone. “We can’t accept poverty in one of the world’s richest countries, it is wrong and represents a woeful under utilisation of Scotland’s talent and resources. “Responsible employers, such as those who are leading SNAP-RB, know that education and employability are two key ways in which they can have a significant, positive effect on the lives of those living in poverty, and by extension, on the Scottish economy.” SNAP-RB is supported by the Scottish Government. Cabinet Secretary for Jobs, the Economy and Fair Work, Keith Brown MSP said: “The Scottish Government recognises that the business community has a key part to play in our commitment to ending

the cycle of poverty once and for all which is why we are providing £200,000 to support this new action plan. “If we are to create a fairer Scotland through areas like improving attainment, employability support and fair work, we need to see this kind of leadership from responsible businesses and a commitment to tackling inequalities in our communities. “This approach is crucial because only a fairer and more equal Scotland can enjoy stronger and more sustainable growth, which ultimately leads to better paid, quality jobs that work for the individual in terms of skills, security and future prospects, and society in terms of supporting inclusive growth.” The Leadership Group is convened by BITC and chaired by Royal Bank of Scotland. MacRoberts MP braves the cold for Social Bite’s CEO Sleep Out Armed with only a sleeping bag each, John MacMillan, MacRoberts’ Managing Partner, and Laura Wilson, the firm’s marketing director, will brave a cold December night to help raise vital funds for some of Scotland’s most vulnerable people. Along with at least 100 other Scottish business leaders the pair will meet at 7pm in Charlotte Square in Edinburgh on 15 December and spend the night outside until 7am the next day. The money is being raised to help break the cycle of homelessness in Scotland by supporting Social Bite’s plan to build a village for 20 homeless individuals to live for 12 months. The village will aim to not only provide a roof over their heads but also provide vital opportunities to help people get back on their feet for good. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, said of the event: “Tackling homelessness is a priority for the Scottish government and we collaborate closely with local government and a range of national and local partners to work towards ensuring everyone has access to a warm and safe place to stay. “Social Bite has done incredible work to help homeless people in Scotland by giving them the opportunity to work in their cafes and restaurants. The money raised from this event will go towards their groundbreaking new homeless village which will help break the cycle of homelessness. I look forward to meeting all those taking part in the sleepout and hearing of their experience.” Mr MacMillan added: “At the end of the night we get to go home to our warm homes and families. Thousands of people in Scotland don’t. The Colours of Paisley The Tapestry of Renfrewshire The Tapestry of Renfrewshire project was officially and enthusiastically launched earlier this year. The launch was, most appropriately, held in Paisley Abbey and highlighted by Janice Forsyth on Radio Scotland’s Culture Show. It is anticipated that the Tapestry will be a major community and colourful contribution towards Paisley’s bid for City of Culture 2021. It is avidly hoped that, when completed, it will be housed in Paisley, as a further draw for tourists, for locals and as an important element of a clearly emerging Textile Trail within Scotland.

This ambitious and exciting project is being led by a collaborative steering group of local organisation representatives and experts. Andrew Crummy, Scottish artist and designer - who drew the panels for the Battle of Prestonpans, the Great Tapestry of Scotland and the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry – is designing the panels. They will be based on the Old County of Renfrew boundary, depicted by Pont’s map of 1583. It is anticipated that the history will stretch from the Iron Age onwards, encompassing the future of Renfrewshire as it is known today. The Paisley thread industry is of global significance.

The desire is for the Tapestry to be stitched and woven with local threads and wools. Donations have started coming in

and are welcome from all over the world – towards the Call To Yarns! http://www. renfrewshiretapestry.org.uk/donate-yarn/ Stitching: currently everyone is encouraged to download a tear drop pattern to stitch at leisure, or they can join in with stitching groups being held at the Paisley Thread Mill Museum and the RWH 1697 hub in Paisley. http://www. renfrewshiretapestry.org.uk/the-project/ These tear drops will be used within the Tapestry project. Schools, stitching groups, charities and organisations have started to take an interest in the project. We encourage more to get in touch, as well as any individuals. Research must be accurate, outreach to every corner of the boundary and we welcome ideas for panels and for volunteers to take on a panel. We also welcome sponsorship for the panels and the project. Andrew Crummy pointed out: ‘the colours of Paisley’s threads are phenomenal’ – indeed they are engaging and inspiring. The Tapestry of Renfrewshire is a community project and everyone’s input will make the colours of people’s stories, Renfrewshire’s heritage and history shine through. No matter what talent people have, everyone is welcome – be it for stitching, administration or information gathering. You do not need to be a stitcher to be involved. Renfrewshire Council Updates: Green light for infrastructure plans to boost Renfrewshire’s long term economic growth Renfrewshire councillors have approved plans for a £274 million investment in new infrastructure projects to secure the long term economic growth of the area. The plans cover City Deal projects Glasgow Airport Access Project, Glasgow Airport Investment Area and the Clyde Waterfront & Renfrew Riverside project which were approved by councillors at the end of November 2016. A series of engagement events were subsequently held in surrounding communities to give people the chance to meet the project team and ask questions on the initiatives. The projects are intended to significantly boost the local economy by attracting investment, supporting businesses and creating jobs. The £39.1m Glasgow Airport Investment Area project would develop a world class business and commercial location in the heart of Renfrewshire. It includes plans for the realignment of Abbotsinch Road, a new bridge across the White Cart, and new cycle routes, all aimed at improving connections between the Westway, Inchinnan and Airport Business Parks. The Clyde Waterfront & Renfrew Riverside project would see the construction of a new opening bridge across the River Clyde. This £90.7m project would better link the communities of Renfrew, Yoker and Clydebank, with new roads and cycle routes giving people improved access to employment, education, health and leisure locations. Lastly, plans for the £144m Glasgow Airport Access Project will deliver a hybrid tram-train system to provide the long sought-after direct rail link between Glasgow Airport, Paisley and Glasgow City Centre. Renfrewshire Council Leader Mark Macmillan, who holds the Glasgow City Region Cabinet’s enterprise portfolio, said: “This major investment programme will create long term jobs and bring huge benefits not only to Renfrewshire’s local communities but right across our city region. In order for us to keep growing our economy, we need to create an attractive location for business that offers first class connections by land, sea and air, with excellent links across the

Clyde and to our town and city centres. Together these projects will open up the area to tourism and businesses.” Bob Grant, Chief Executive of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “A direct rail link is crucial to allow our companies to compete more effectively. Glasgow Airport is a key economic driver for the whole of Renfrewshire and greater Glasgow. Our most important asset needs an effective transport infrastructure which will

allow businesses to service new markets, attract and retain staff and maintain a competitive advantage. “The City Deal investment for Renfrewshire as a whole will make a significant difference in supporting our long term economic growth and ensure we remain competitive in attracting jobs to the area.” Following approval by Renfrewshire Council the plans were sent on for consideration to the Glasgow City Region Cabinet as this went to press.

Paisley 2021 gears up for big year ahead Paisley’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021 has just celebrated its first anniversary…and it has already been quite some journey! The bid to win the prestigious national culture title has captured the imagination of people across Renfrewshire. Cultural conversations, 2021 ‘weekends’ and, of course, lions have all featured in an outpouring of unprecedented cultural activity across the town and beyond. Renfrewshire businesses have been very supportive of the bid, with over 70 members of the Chamber already publicly pledging their support for Paisley 2021. The UK City of Culture competition is run by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, with the city of Hull set to in 2017. The shortlist for the 2021 title will be announced in May 2017 with the winner announced in November 2017. Todholm Primary School launches its first community café to the public Budding entrepreneurs from Todholm Primary School have run their first community café after being awarded funding through Renfrewshire Council’s Dragons’ Den competition. The first Todholm Tearooms event was held on Fri 2 December with more than 40 members of the community coming along to enjoy the pupils’ hospitality and wares. On the day visitors were offered a delicious selection of home baking prepared and served by the children themselves. Earlier this year the school received £630, double the requested amount, for their idea to establish the Todholm Tearooms. The funding was used to purchase resources such as cups, saucers, branded aprons and ingredients as well as helping to finance the compilation of a school cook book to help fund future events. The idea to run a café was inspired by the children wanting to offer a place where members of the community, especially the older generation, could congregate. As part of the project pupils are also looking to run a mobile service to deliver their home baking to neighbouring care homes Rowan Gardens and Hunterhill Care Home. The ‘Cooking Up A Storm with Todholm Tearooms’ cook book, also unveiled at the event, was compiled by all the pupils of Todholm Primary School. Each class selected a starter, main course and dessert that they themselves had made to feature in the book. Priced at £5 the funds from the book sales will go towards running future Todholm Tearooms. Councillor Jacqueline Henry, Convener

of Education and Children’s Services Policy Board, who attended the launch said: “I would like to congratulate all the pupils from Todholm Primary School and the teachers that supported them for running such an excellent event for members of the local community to enjoy. “It was inspiring to see the children apply the creative ideas presented during the Dragons’ Den event with such successful results. The Todholm Tearooms is aimed at helping others in their local community and highlights why the school was presented with the funding. I’m sure this will lead to more successful events in the future.” Todholm Primary School Head Teacher, Lynne McGinn, said: “The children have been so enthusiastic about this project and we’re really impressed with their efforts and how well it’s been received by the local community. “The Todholm Tearooms project has enabled the pupils to learn valuable life skills such as team work, planning and also helped to improve their confidence which will help them in the future. This has been an excellent learning

opportunity for the children and provided them with the chance to give something back to the community. I look forward to our next Todholm Tearooms event.”

LHS was over the moon to welcome so many business partners into school for Employability Week. Thanks to CBC, Balfour Beatty and Rolls Royce pictured here and also to Renfrewshire Council, St. Mirren FC, Police Scotland, the British Army and Tesco for coming to talk to S2 pupils at the speed network. Pupils had a great time and now have lots of ideas for their future careers.

Saturday the 26th of November saw the launch of Arkleston Primary School’s “Spirit of Arky” business. This is an enterprise business whereby second hand school uniforms are laundered and recycled being sold at an attractive price, supporting families with the cost of the school day. Following the launch of the business we hope to move our shop online in the near future, making it more accessible to our customers. Alongside this, our existing business of the Arky’s Residential Nail Bar was, as usual, a popular attraction.

The overall assessment of the pupils was extremely positive with approximately 88% of the pupils giving a rating of 4 very informative or 5 extremely informative. One pupil reported, ‘Today I learned

about the wide variety of jobs that you can get with languages and how you can combine languages with other skills.’ It was generally felt that the event was very worthwhile on the part of both the staff and pupils.

Trinity High Languages in Work Event 2016 On Wednesday 9th November the Modern Languages department hosted a Languages in Work event for S3 pupils. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of jobs that use languages and how learning a language can enhance the prospects of pupils getting a job in the future. The event was made up of 2 key note speakers and 5 workshops from a variety of industries such as Clansman Dynamics (Engineering) and the SFA (Sport), IBERDROLA (Electricity), SCILT (Education), Rolls Royce (Engineering), Harper Macleod LLP (Legal Services)

Young Enterprise – Christmas Trade Fair Review 22 teams from across Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire & Inverclyde competed at the start of December in the annual Young Enterprise Company Programme Trade Fair at Soar intu Braehead. With a wide range of products including candles, phone covers, framed images & wooden Christmas trees; all developed and marketed by themselves, over 200 pupils from S5 & S6 took part. Commenting on the event, local area Chair Bob Davidson said “...the standard as always was high making it a hard task

for our judges. The Renfrewshire Area team is well established and the Company Programme is a popular choice for senior phase pupils looking to unleash their inner entrepreneur and find that edge for their CV whilst learning valuable skills that will help them whatever career they choose. The teams all get together again for the area finals in March where they compete across 4 different areas – display stand, business report, interview and presentation.” The prize winners on the night were:
