President’s Welcome By the time you read this the Chamber will have held its 50th anniversary celebration and Civic Reception. As your President, in this our 50th year, I am proud to say that I believe that being a member of our local Chamber is more relevant now than ever. Your Chamber offers local businesses the opportunity to interact and engage with each other via a variety of methods, a harmony of traditional favoured ones, from face to face networking, to social engagement on twitter, facebook and Linkedin. I am also pleased to report that your Chamber is in a strong position, but we must never get complacent – we continually strive to innovate and improve – listening to our members to ensure that we are delivering what you the members want to a consistent high standard. So please continue to support Renfrewshire Chamber – thank you to all our members for your continued support and a special mention to the many companies who have been Chamber members since its inception – here’s to the next 50 years The economic recovery continues with surveys from Scottish & British Chambers showing that recovery is happening and the continued fall in inflation below the 2% target is good news for business and consumers alike but certain elements remain fragile. So I encourage our members to work smart, don’t hide and wait too long – you need to get out there and make things happen, make sure you are marketing your wares and making the right connections through networking have you considered exporting?, if not, speak to your Chamber, we can help. The Chamber held its 4th B2B event in May – entitled Business Matters in Renfrewshire. The two day event was our most successful to date. Day 1 hosted a record 51 exhibitors and showed a substantial increased number of seminar attendees from the previous year to approximately 450 across all 6 seminars. The move to the Lagoon appears to have been well received – with delegates appreciating more space, brighter surroundings, on site catering and free wifi. As I have said, Day 2 at Paisley Town Hall was our most successful conference to date with audience numbers reaching in

excess of 200, attracted by the quality of our speakers. Thank you to all the members who attended, and to those who exhibited and conducted a seminar. A selection of photographs appear later in this edition with hundreds more available on our facebook page. Last month the Chamber held a private meeting with the Transport Minister Keith Brown MSP and Minister for Local Government and Planning Derek Mackay MSP – held at the magnificent Malcolm’s Group Heritage Centre. The meeting was chaired by myself and a number of business members attended, who raised issues of concern, in the main with suggested solutions with a view to ensuring Renfrewshire is factored into future Government plans regarding transport infrastructure and connectivity. I have previously mentioned exporting and I was therefore delighted with the turnout and support given to our ExpoRen event held in March – which brought all partners together to support companies looking to export more or indeed start their export journey. Once again if any of our member companies need advice on this aspect the Chamber is here to help. I think that it is appropriate to say well done to Bob Grant our Deputy CEO who was instrumental for smashing our target for helping recent local graduates find permanent employment with member companies. Our original target of 20 ended up being increased to over 30. As in previous years we take a break from events in July due to the number of members on holiday – but no real rest for the Chamber – because July is the month we launch ROCCO 2014. I encourage all members to enter – there is a category for everyone. Remember and put 14th Nov in your diary – for ROCCO 2014 – most of you know this is the largest business event in Renfrewshire with some 500 people in attendance. The event always sells out – so if you want a table I recommend you don’t leave it too late and book via the Chamber NOW. On a sporting theme, it’s the time of year for members to don their suits of armour in that it’s time for the annual Chamber Golf outing – and I am playing. This year’s event is being

held at Paisley Golf Club and I hope the weather holds. Still on a sporting theme, training is well underway for the Kersland School pupils in Paisley who are participating in the “Race to the Games” held on the Clyde on 2nd July. Your Chamber has sponsored their boat and we wish the team well, it would be great if the members can turn out on the day to offer their support. All that remains for me to say is have a fantastic summer, stay in touch with the Chamber and I look forward to seeing many of you soon.

A Warm Welcome from our Chief Executive Hard to believe it’s almost end of June, in this the 50th anniversary of Renfrewshire Chamber. The Chamber has been extremely busy working on many events since my last intro including ExpoRen, Chamber Golf, our 50th celebration and our 2 day B2B event – Business Matters in Renfrewshire. We have also been busy sponsoring and judging various events & competitions at UWS & West College Scotland - including Ideas In Enterprise, PhD Posters, Digital Futures, Dragons Den and Young Enterprise Scotland area finals to name a few. Congratulations to 3 members of the Chamber Team; 1) Euan for winning the Invest in Renfrewshire award as mentioned in Tom’s welcome 2) Calum for passing his

driving test and 3) delighted to announce that Laura is expecting her 2nd child – wonderful news. The Chamber recently underwent a VAT inspection – and I’m delighted to announce that no issues were found with the Inspector commending Catherine and Carol on their excellent financial record keeping - well done ladies. No events in July as we prepare for ROCCO 2014 launch and juggle the main holiday time at the Chamber. Help inspire the Engineers of the Future Renfrewshire Chamber & Renfrewshire Council recently held an industry event to encourage engineers from the local business community to support a new primary school initiative across Renfrewshire called Primary Engineer – (there is still time to get involved as the programme starts after the summer…) Primary Engineer is a nationwide organisation that exists to inspire and encourage children’s interest in engineering / STEM related subjects & careers. The initiative trains teachers in delivering hands on practical lesson plans and importantly the added wow factor comes from local engineers (experienced engineers from industry, college & university) and also under-graduates and

apprentices. The initial plan is to deliver this across half the primary schools in Renfrewshire (~25) The Chamber is supporting this excellent initiative by encouraging local engineering companies (Chamber members & non-members) to get involved. Gary Kerr from EPM Solutions has been involved right from the start, and as a STEM Ambassador himself is excited about the opportunity and is confident many others will follow. We are looking for volunteers to go into the schools, talk to the kids about careers in engineering, and help to run practical sessions (always with the teacher). The commitment, from a time perspective is small – but the impact could be long lasting (we need at least 1 engineer per school). This involvement could also be

an opportunity to forge industry links between the school and your company. At the Renfrewshire industry event, Susan Scurlock, Chief Executive of Primary Engineer, presented the aims of the organisation and the local initiative, as well as outlining the ways in which engineers can get involved. Chamber member Peak Scientific wins 4th Queens Award Chamber member Peak Scientific has won a remarkable fourth Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade while boosting turnover by 20% to £30million. Town Centre Events Renfrewshire residents and businesses can look forward to a festival of fun over the summer months thanks to the council’s town centre events programme. Tens of thousands of people are expected to visit a series of big days over the summer and beyond – providing a boost for local traders. The town centre events kick off with Sma’ Shot Day on Saturday 5 July in the usual venue of Paisley’s Abbey Close. That month will also see Renfrewshire play its part in Scotland’s biggest-ever sporting event when the Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay arrives on Thursday 17 July. A day of entertainment will mark the baton’s progress around 15 Renfrewshire towns and villages. Check www. renfrewshire.gov.uk/qbr for more details, including the full route. Two days later (Saturday 19 July) the Paisley Pipe Band Championships will take centre stage, with some of the country’s top bands playing in the town centre. August will see a family favourite in a new location, with the popular Fire

Engine Rally taking place in Johnstone’s Houstoun Square on Saturday 16 August. The Paisley 10k road race is on Saturday 31 August, before Renfrewshire Doors Open Day on the weekend of 6 and 7 September. The 10 to 18 October will see the third year of Paisley’s Spree festival, with a to-beconfirmed line-up of music, comedy and more set for various venues in the town. This year’s Spree will coincide with the return of a Lego exhibition, after the popular Brick City showcase smashed attendance records at Paisley Museum this year. And November will see the annual Fireworks Spectacular, as well as the usual Christmas Lights Switch-On events in Paisley, Johnstone and Renfew. Renfrewshire Council Leader Mark Macmillan said: “Our town centre events programme encourage tens of thousands of visitors into the area every year, while

giving local people some fun days out in their home towns. “By staging events which bring people into the town centres and give them a reason to spend the day, we are helping to stimulate trade among local businesses. “We have big plans to use the area’s combined heritage and cultural appeal to spearhead regeneration and deliver lasting benefits for whole of Renfrewshire. “We are confident the events programme offers something for everyone, and I hope to see as many people as possible come out to support what we are trying to do.” For more information on local events, visit www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/events

Recruits told ‘you’re hired’ at finale A group of local young people were given a helping hand into the world of work at the glittering finale of a popular council-run youth employment programme. The Recruit is loosely modelled on telly favourite The Apprentice and sees a group of young jobseekers take part in a series of business-based challenges. The latest instalment of the programme featured 38 local unemployed young people and took place throughout February and March. The awards ceremony in Paisley Town Hall – presented by DJ George Bowie – saw 200 family members, Invest in Renfrewshire employers and invited guests. A total of 16 young people have found jobs through the programme, with two more set to go through final interviews in the next week. A further eight were offered training opportunities with the council. On the night James Campbell, 23, from Paisley, was named as the Top Recruit. A

delighted James said: “I was gobsmacked to find out I was Top Recruit – the whole programme has been fantastic. “Before I was on The Recruit my confidence was low – there were so many things I would have said I wasn’t. But now – thanks to all the things the Recruit team has taught us – I would look at all the things I can do.” Darren McCormack, 23, of Renfrew, was voted Recruit’s Choice by his team-mates for being the person they felt deserved special recognition. Renfrewshire Council Leader Mark Macmillan, who helped present some of the prizes on the night, said: “Once again, the young people on The Recruit programme have been a credit to themselves and to the area. “They have earned the opportunities they were given tonight through their own hard work and I wish them all the best with their futures. “Over the years, the programme has

helped hundreds of local young people get ready for and find work, while being universally recognised as an enjoyable and rewarding experience for those who take part. “The council has made tackling unemployment one of our biggest priorities through the Invest in Renfrewshire programme and we are proud to be able to run a programme as well-supported and well-regarded as this. “Once again, we would like to thank the local businesses and organisations who offered their time and expertise to run challenges and who have helped sponsor the programme, as without them The Recruit wouldn’t be the success it is.” On the night, the Recruits handed over a cheque for £1,570 to Accord Hospice, having raised the money through a charity fundraising challenge. The Recruit will be back in the summer with a programme for S5/6 school pupils, set to start in June.

Invest in Renfrewshire is the council’s programme to boost the local economy and tackle unemployment. It aims to help create employment opportunities by offering funding to businesses to help them grow and take on new staff. Since the programme started in summer 2012, we have signed up more than 600 companies and helped create more than 550 new jobs in the area. In addition to that, 189 companies have been offered grants to pursue development, training, exhibition and ICT projects, amounting to combined funding

Marble Fashion Designs Ltd came to Invest in Renfrewshire for assistance – and ever since then they have been dressed for success. The company designs and distributes a range of ladies fashionwear, under its own ‘Marble’ and ‘Crush’ labels, to independent fashion boutiques and department stores. The business, which began trading from its base in Hillington in 2008 with just five employees, has grown rapidly over the last few years and now employs 15 people. In 2010 it expanded into Ireland and Spain and since then has further developed its export markets, now selling to 800 customers across 14 countries through a range of agency and distribution networks. Invest in Renfrewshire has provided support at key stages of the business’s development. Wage incentives have helped towards the cost of employing young, unemployed people, with further financial assistance towards merchandising materials and IT systems, both of which have been key to increasing UK and export sales. Director Nick Williams said: “Developing your business, particularly internationally, requires a massive investment - both financially and in terms of management commitment. “The support of Invest in Renfrewshire has given us the incentive to make that investment and as a result we have taken the business to a new level. We have big plans for the future and without a doubt we will be working with Invest in the future.”

The awards were designed to hail the employees who deserve special recognition and who have made the biggest difference to their organisations. Retail scheme is open for business Three neighbouring businesses had their shopfronts transformed thanks to a council retail improvement scheme – now they are urging other firms to do the same. JJs Barbers, the Beauty Box and GMG Consultancy sit side by side in Renfrew’s Paisley Road – and all are boasting shiny new exteriors. The firms were among 24 businesses to benefit from Renfrewshire Council’s 2013/4 Retail Improvement Scheme – which has been relaunched for another year. The scheme – part of the council’s Invest in Renfrewshire programme to boost the local economy – has been given an enhanced budget of £300,000 for 2014/5. Last year’s scheme was so popular that the entire £200k budget was spent, which is why councillors agreed to pump in an extra £100k this year.

Small businesses in retail areas throughout Renfrewshire can now apply for grants of up to £10k, or 80% of costs, to fund shopfront work. Councillor Roy Glen, convener of the council’s Economy and Jobs Board, paid a visit to Renfrew to meet the three firms to find out how their grants had helped. He was met by Janice Burgess and Janet McIntosh of JJs Barbers, Grant MacGregor of GMG Construction Consultancy, and Doreen Black of the Beauty Box. Janice said: “The work has made a huge difference to the look of the shop and the work has been a massive help to the business – everyone has commented on it.” Grant added: “It’s a great scheme – other businesses would be crazy if they don’t look into it!” Councillor Glen added: “It was great to meet with the business owners and to

hear how positive they were about the retail improvement scheme. “Helping local businesses to grow is one of the biggest priorities of the council, which is why we have made a significant financial commitment to the Invest in Renfrewshire programme. “This money will not only give local retailers a boost, but it will help improve the appearance of the whole area too.” The scheme is open to any small business in a retail area throughout Renfrewshire other than in Paisley town centre, where a separate property improvement grant scheme is available. New Innovation Centre to transform Scottish construction industry

University of the West of Scotland is a key player in a £7.5 million construction innovation centre, which is to be established in Scotland to connect industry and academia. The Construction Scotland innovation centre will provide the 31,000-plus businesses involved in the sector with a one-stop shop for accessing a team of academic experts and public support. Funded by the Scottish Funding Council, the centre is supported by Scottish Enterprise, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and 11 Scottish universities, including University of the West of Scotland. Professor Milan Radosavljevic of University of the West of Scotland’s School of Engineering said: “By forging links between the Scottish construction sector and 11 universities, the new centre has an unprecedented potential to become an effective and internationally recognised conduit of innovation. “The centre has a strong societal role where knowledge exchange functions as a mechanism to develop innovative solutions for the benefit of all. “Dr Wenzhong Zhu and other colleagues from the University’s School of Engineering, who were involved during the proposal stage, made a hugely important contribution and we are delighted that our University now plays a pivotal role in the development of the centre.”

UWS Principal receives international award for Outstanding Service to Higher Education Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of University of the West of Scotland (UWS), has received an international award for ‘Outstanding Service to Higher Education’. Professor Mahoney was presented with the award from the International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association (HETL) at its recent annual conference in Anchorage, USA. The 2014 HETL conference, which ran from 31 May to 2 June 2014, examined the impacts that social and mobile media and networks are having on learning environments in higher education Professor Mahoney is a dynamic,

internationally experienced leader and joined UWS in 2013 from The Higher Education Academy, the organisation that champions excellent learning and teaching in Higher Education across the UK, where he held the post of Chief Executive. Professor Mahoney has had a distinguished career in academia and has published widely in the areas of children’s fitness, health, sport, exercise, performance and education. Commenting on being presented with the award Professor Craig Mahoney said: “I am truly honoured and humbled to have been given the 2014 HETL award for Outstanding Service to Higher Education. It is hugely pleasing to be

recognised in this way from such an important international organisation.” HETL is an association of educators, by educators, for educators. HETL fulfils its vision of advancing the scholarship and practice of teaching and learning by focusing its mission on the three core areas of networking and collaboration; research, innovation, and publishing; and higher education development and capacity building.

UWS project wins gold at Game Changer Awards UWS won a gold medal in the Research Impact category of the Game Changer Awards, which took place at a ceremony on Thursday 3 April 2014 at the Old Fruitmarket in Glasgow. The Game Changer Awards, organised in collaboration by Colleges Scotland and Universities Scotland, and backed by Legacy 2014 and the Scottish Funding Council, celebrate the many and varied contributions made by Scotland’s colleges and higher education institutions to the success of the Games and to ensure a lasting legacy for the nation. The event saw gold, silver and bronze medals being awarded. UWS won a gold medal award for its project, Leveraging Para-sports Events for Sustainable Community Participation. This collaborative project between UWS and University of Western Ontario aims to examine how the hosting of integrated or non-integrated sports events for people with a disability are being used to create opportunities for community participation and to influence community attitudes towards disability. This study will contribute to the ongoing debate about integrated or separate sports events and the literature on the wider social value of hosting sporting events.

Professor Gayle McPherson, Chair in Events and Cultural Policy at UWS, is heading up this project. The project also sees key input from Professor David McGillivray of the University’s Creative Media Academy. Professor McPherson said: “We are delighted to have won a gold medal in the Research Impact category of the Game Changer Awards. Our project focuses on how the catalyst effect of the Games can be used to leverage social

change. Impressions for Profit Russell Campbell - Lecturer, School of Business, UWS With so much emphasis placed on maintaining strong relationships in business these days one pivotal aspect of interaction is sometimes forgotten – making strong first impressions. Here at the UWS School of Business, based on an element of our BA Marketing programme, we have developed commercial business seminars focusing on how to use first impressions as a catalyst for future potential. In business, ideally we need to be genuine, memorable, likable and inspiring. Diverse evidence suggests that people often make decisions instantaneously rather than through long deliberation. Yet, we can sometimes ‘sell’ something and then ‘buy it back’, so we must create memorable introductions followed by compelling narrative.

Many of us perceive first impressions as mainly appearance-led, or perhaps dominated by a prepared elevator pitch. Such aspects are important, though wider multi-sensory communication can be overlooked – notably eye contact, handshakes, olfactory issues, voice modulation or indeed a sixth sense. Being comfortable operating in different settings and communicating to heterogeneous decision-makers is essential, as many customers are increasingly cosmopolitan in nature. Using evidence to illustrate any USPs can also be valuable. It is also worth accessing training on the use of body language and elevator pitches in order to avoid common pitfalls; the micro characteristics that others perceive but of which we may be oblivious. Ultimately we need to be courteous to

new contacts, offer our appreciation and create a genuine impression of interest in what they need from us. After all, there is no second opportunity to make a first impression.

Great Tapestry of Scotland Renfrewshire’s historical Anchor Mill opens its doors to over 18,500 people to view The Great Tapestry of Scotland. The tapestry is an outstanding achievement of craftsmanship and artistry; a visual history of Scotland and its people. The organisation of this exhibition was thanks to many people not least the students of West college Scotland Construction Department who erected the tapestry display structures. These students are enrolled in the National Progress Award (NPA) in Built Environment in preparation for further training with their goal to find apprenticeships within the building and construction sector. Their contribution to the setting up and dismantling of the exhibtion was important to the project and their professional development, spending hours erecting the wooden display stands and information stanchions and returning 5 weeks later to assist with the dismantling. This was a great opportunity for the students to get hands on experience with a live project. In addition to their

construction skills, they needed to have a professional outlook and manner, working in a public and residential space. A high standard of work was required to meet the needs and expectations of the committee organising The Great Tapestry of Scotland with its notable significance to the Paisley Heritage Asset Strategy. Weaving Musical Threads, Paisley Thread Mill Museum and West College Scotland were preparing for this important event and expected quality and professional delivery. The students with their positive attitude were a credit to themselves and West College Scotland .

Businesses invited to help future scientists’ careers to blast off Renfrewshire’s business community are being invited to get involved in a unique ‘space school’ never before run in Scotland. Mission Discovery is an opportunity for brands to be associated with an innovative educational programme; meet and work alongside real-life NASA astronauts, astronaut trainers and rocket scientists; and to help lay the foundations for a legacy of excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in Renfrewshire. Over five days, up to 180 budding mathematicians and scientists will see their imaginations and ambitions lift off by taking part in a number of team building exercises, personal development courses and mission experiments – all designed to improve presentation, social and leadership skills. They will also work in teams with the experts and sponsors to develop their very own space experiment idea. Sponsors will also be invited to join the space experts on a judging panel to select the winning team whose experiment will be

built, launched into space and transported to the International Space Station where it will carry out tests and send its collected data back to schools across the planet. A superb range of sponsorship packages are available to businesses interested in supporting the event. As well as directly enhancing the studies of those pupils taking part, businesses will also be supporting Renfrewshire Council’s aim of building a legacy that will benefit students of all ages and set Renfrewshire up as a centre of excellence in science, technology, engineering and maths for pupils. In addition, the council welcomes any opportunities for students to gain experience from the local business community through talks, master-classes and work placements. Education & business partnership Renfrewshire Council education department recently renewed its partnership with Renfrewshire Chamber for another 3 years. The partnership enables the Chamber to support schools to engage with the local business community and helps teaching staff and pupils understand more about the world of work, options post school and what employers are looking for. Enterprising pupils step into the Dragon’s Den Six teams of entrepreneurial Renfrewshire school pupils faced a panel of ‘dragons’ in a bid to win funding for their social enterprise ideas. A community cinema, a nail bar, a school newspaper, a library, an internet course for older people and sugar and gluten-free lollipops were the ideas selected for this year’s school’s Dragon’s Den finale. The final event took place at West College Scotland, Paisley Campus, where the six finalist teams were invited to present their ideas to the ‘dragons’ before they selected this year’s overall winner, Gryffe High School. The Gryffe High team were also named as the secondary school winners and awarded £600 towards their community cinema idea. Winners in the primary school category were Wallace Primary for their idea of creating a library for the primary and nursery children. The Pre-five category winners were Our Lady of Peace Nursery for their ‘Little Lollipop League’ plan to use sugar/glutenfree lollipops to raise awareness of road safety. The trophies were presented by Renfrewshire’s Provost Anne Hall. The Dragons this year were Liz Connolly, Vice Principal of the College, James Lang, Marketing Director Scottish Leather Group, Jay Lamb, Social Enterprise Academy, Alison Dowling, Renfrewshire Wide Credit Union, Bob Davidson, Chief Executive of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce and Gaynor Hutton, Project Oskar, Kibbleworks. Provost Hall said: “I’d like to congratulate the winners Gryffe High, as well as each of the finalists who all did a fantastic job coming up with and presenting really impressive, viable business ideas. “The schools’ Dragon’s Den competition is an excellent way of getting young people thinking about running a business as well as giving back to their community in some way. “I’d also like to thank the sponsors for their support and contributions in making this event possible each year. “It was a fantastic night. All of the teams did an excellent job, especially the children from Our Lady of Peace Nursery who were very good despite it being a late night for them.”

This year’s finalists were: Our Lady Of Peace Nursery – The Little Lollipop League The plan is to sell sugar/gluten-free lollipops to raise awareness of road safety issues in the community. With roadworks being a feature of the local landscape in recent times, the young people have identified the risks they face on a daily basis and wish to make others aware of these dangers. They were awarded £400 towards their enterprise. Arkleston Primary – Resident Nail Bar The business idea is to run a Nail Bar/ Salon, in Arkleston Primary, for all pupils, staff and parents of the school, and residents and families of Renfrew Care Home. The young people wish to build on the strong intergenerational links that already exist between the school and Renfrew Care Home by providing a high quality, professional service. The ‘dragons’ awarded the project £400. St James’ Primary School – St James’ Primary Monthly Express The young people of St James’ Primary wish to start a school newspaper which will be sold sell to parents and the local community. The enterprise will be led by the school’s ‘Big News Press Team’ and aims to involve the local community in the life of the school whilst improving levels of attainment in literacy. The ‘dragons’ awarded the project £400.

Wallace Primary School – Wallace World of Books Pupils at Wallace Primary are eager to establish a library which services the primary school and nursery. The aim is to provide a space where young people can borrow books and improve their reading ability. As winners of the primary category, the team were awarded £500. Gleniffer High School – Silver Fox Surfers A group of current S4 pupils will be offering a four week (one per term) Web Wise course for senior citizens in the local area. The young people aim to run a successful business which enhances the lives of the older generation living in the community as well as providing them with a new skill set. The project was awarded £500. Gryffe High School – Gryffe Movie Theatre Gryffe High’s business idea is to run a community cinema from the theatre within the school. Creation of a community hub in the area is important to the young people of Gryffe High and they see huge potential in this enterprise. The team were awarded £600 towards their project. Dragon’s Den is sponsored by Renfrewshire Council, Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, West College Scotland and Clydesdale Bank. Scottish Leather Group also joined as a new sponsor this year.

The Need For Training No matter the size of business I speak to or the sector they’re in, when it comes to Social Media, the issues and concerns are pretty much always the same: • Fear (we’re worried about saying the wrong things on Facebook and Twitter etc.) • Resource (we don’t have time to spend on all of this.) • ROI (we’re not seeing the value, we can’t tie it back to sales, and it seems like it’s all getting less effective.) The good news is all 3 issues can be resolved. Training can help you overcome the fears by making sure you properly understanding the implications and how to mitigate them. A process can be put in place so staff “don’t say anything stupid” (a line from the BBC social media policy!) With hands-on practical advice, you can learn how to make your social media activity more efficient, less of a time drain, and focussed on your own business success criteria. In terms of ROI - businesses often push for hundreds of ‘LIKES’ on Facebook and end up

disappointed when the huge audience doesn’t equal increased turnover. Training is a word that scares some people. Maybe your work sent you on a course that was boring, maybe it was powerpoint hell. Race 2 the Games On Wednesday 2 July 2014 up to 20 colourful two man Access 303 sailing dinghies will be racing a 33 km or 17 nautical mile passage race up the River Clyde. The start is at James Watt Dock, Greenock with a crew handover and ‘refuelling!’ stop at intu Braehead. The finish line is at the Millennium Bridge, Glasgow Science Centre. For the participants – sailors with additional support needs from special schools and organisations in Scotland, England and overseas – this race is their opportunity to be part of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. It will give them an amazing experience of independence and will put their training sessions, held at Clyde Muirshiel’s Castle Semple Centre, into practice as they take part in their own race to Glasgow in 2014. The Chamber has been delighted to support Kersland school in their training for the event and as sponsor of their dinghy.

Renfrewshire Export Partnership Friday the 21st March saw the launch of the Renfrewshire Export Partnership held at West College Scotland, Paisley. (#ExpoRen) Born from the local Community Planning Partnership where the Jobs & Economy Convenor Cllr Roy Glen and Lead Officer, Mary Crearie Director of Development & Housing, asked partners to come up with new ways of helping companies grow and create more jobs in Renfrewshire. Partners, Renfrewshire Chamber chief exec, Bob Davidson and Scottish Enterprise Business Networks & Communications Manager, Alison Loveday - pulled together a proposal working with key people from Invest in Renfrewshire and SDI. The launch offered local businesses interested in exporting or wishing to enter additional foreign markets, information on how to achieve that and learn what support is available in Renfrewshire. We need to ensure we fully exploit these assets internationally. “This Partnership provides joined-up business support to local companies looking to operate in the global marketplace and members of the Partnership play an integral role in creating prosperity for the area, placing Renfrewshire firmly in the commercial spotlight.” The partnership plans to hold further smaller local events focusing on specific areas used by exporters such as logistics, finance, e-commerce & marketing. Private Minister meeting - Transport & Planning The Chamber recently arranged and held a private business meeting with Scottish Government Ministers hosted by the Malcolm Group in their Heritage Centre at Linwood. The Ministers that attended were:

Renfrewshire Chamber recently held its annual conference “Business Matters in Renfrewshire”. Attended by over 200 people from a cross section of the business community and a number of school pupils & students. The 4 speakers were: • Fergus Ewing MSP, Minister for Energy, Enterprise & Tourism • Johann Lamont MSP, Leader of the Scottish Labour Party • Douglas Flint CBE, Chairman of HSBC • Jim McColl OBE The politicians focused mainly on the #indyref debate whilst Douglas Flint discussed the lessons Scotland can learn from the global financial crisis. Jim McColl talked passionately about how he has built a global business that started in and continues to be managed from Scotland. Hosted by STV’s John Mackay the conference is the main business event of its type in Renfrewshire. Day 1 took place the previous day at the Lagoon and was attended by over 300 people; where 50 businesses exhibited and 6 seminars covering a wide variety of topics including social media, branding,

strategy & selling were on offer. Commenting on the 2 days, chamber President Tom Johnston said “thank you to all our speakers, companies & organisations that exhibited, gave seminars and attended B2BPaisley, the event gets bigger every year. Next year the event will be bigger again and we encourage more members of the business community to get involved. A great deal of effort goes into these events with some of the speakers being booked a year in advance. For any members that embrace social media use hashtag #b2bpaisley to see what was being said. Potential impact of recent Google decision on being “erased”! As the internet and technology advance at an awe-inspiring pace, data protection should be a priority in every industry, at every level. Scotwest shows why Credit Unions are different Scotwest Credit Union have recently shown why Credit Unions are different by applying new reduced interest rates to Members who had already applied for loans under the old rates - even before the new rates had been publically launched! Scotwest staff had the pleasure of phoning all the members who were in the process of applying for loans to tell them the good news. About Flipping Time? Most readers will remember the taxpayer funded duck house. The abuse of the MPs expenses system was one of the big stories from a few years back and the cynical use of MPs expenses to “flip homes” and make gains was derided. But, can you believe that whilst the expenses system was sorted, the tax breaks that allowed this to happen are only now being reined in? Capital gains on your main residence are generally tax free. If you move out before selling, you used to have 36 months “grace” period - this has now been cut to 18 months. This grace period was being abused by MPs. They could buy a flat and furnish it, leave it empty for a few weeks aside from a sleepover or two themselves, then rent it for a couple of years before selling it tax free at a gain. Best of all, the MPs didn’t even have to move in. If you have two homes you can elect which is your main residence for tax purposes and that doesn’t have to be the one you use regularly. These rules have been generous to tax planners (not all of whom are MPs of course!). Perhaps inevitably consultation taking place seems certain to limit the scope for abuse of these elections. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Patron of transport charity Transaid, has officially launched Malcolm Logistics’ 50ft Container at this year’s Multimodal exhibition in Birmingham’s NEC. Witnessed by professionals from all areas of the industry, Malcolm Logistics was proud to unveil their newest intermodal innovation, which is set to revolutionise the way goods will be moved in the future. Now customers will have the facility to move 15% more freight per journey (over the largest conventional available container). Icelandair Responds To Ryder Cup Demand With Additional Glasgow Flights

Icelandair has responded to strong demand from the North American market for flights to Glasgow by adding extra capacity for the Ryder Cup in September. September’s additional flights mean that Icelandair, which is one of Glasgow Airport’s longest serving airlines and provides Scotland with important connections to North America, will operate 12 flights over a two week period. The Icelandic flag carrier has already increased seat capacity by 25% in 2014 with the addition of a fifth weekly flight to Reykjavik from Scotland’s largest city. The addition of a fifth weekly flight has increased Icelandair’s capacity at Glasgow Airport by an extra 15,000 seats per year. Passengers connecting in Reykjavik can choose from an extensive list of onward destinations including Boston, Denver, New York, Halifax and Toronto. Visitors from the USA and Canada together account for more than 110,000 visits every year and generate around £50 million for the city’s economy. Andres Jonsson, Icelandair´s General Manager UK, said: “Icelandair has been serving Glasgow for many years and

since 2010 we have experienced a positive momentum in travel to and from Glasgow with our increased frequency, and we plan to build on that. “We are very excited about 2014 and the extra capacity will allow us to offer our customers even more seamless connections to our 12 destinations in North America. Travelling with Icelandair to and from Glasgow is often the fastest way to go. “With the introduction of both Edmonton and Vancouver to our network and increased frequency on Toronto we expect strong demand from business and leisure travellers looking to travel to Canada. “The Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup will also prove popular among North American customers as many are golfers and like to shop so they appreciate having two 23kg complimentary checked-in bags when they travel on an economy ticket.” Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “The Ryder Cup is a huge draw for North American visitors and it is no surprise that Icelandair has reacted to an increase in demand by announcing additional capacity. “Icelandair has clearly demonstrated its

confidence in the Scottish market, which it has served since the 1940s, by adding significant new capacity for two years running.” Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “The USA and Canada are key markets for Glasgow and our research shows that golf, history and culture are huge draws for North American visitors. “Increased capacity is a strong reflection of the popularity of Icelandair’s service and presents greater scope to grow both leisure and business tourism to Glasgow during September; delivering a welcome economic boost to the city’s hotels, restaurants, shops, bars and other businesses.” This year’s Ryder Cup, the biennial professional match-play golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States, takes place at Gleneagles in September. Engage Renfrewshire Training Calendar April 2014 to March 2015 On Friday 16th May 2014, Engage Renfrewshire officially launched our membership training calendar for 2014 to 2015. Training for the sector and community has become an integral part of our effort to assist in the development of local third sector groups, associations, charities and their volunteers. We hope that by undertaking a range of training, local organisations will become more sustainable and be able provide better services to our communities. Significantly we aim to put them in a stronger position to procure where possible public sector contracts in the future. Each year we have sought to develop our calendar – a calendar that now provides courses on ‘1st Aid Training’, ‘Sports Coaching’, ‘Supporting People from Vulnerable Groups’ and ‘Introduction to Social Enterprise’. For 2013 -14 we were able to bring in some Renfrewshire Community Planning Partners to host some courses for us – this included courses on ‘Tendering & Procurement’, ‘Gift Aid’ and ‘Being a Responsible Director’.

For 2014 - 2015 we decided to take this one step further and consult directly with a number of our local partners on which style of courses they would like to see made available. These partners were chosen because of their wide membership, which has provided us with ideas from very specific communities of interest. Alex Whelan gifts thriving fitness centre to charity A SUCCESSFUL businessman is handing over his thriving fitness centre to a new charity in a unique move that will see two hospices share the profits. The transfer of the private business to a charitable trust is believed to be the first of its kind in Scotland and profits from the gym will now go to the ACCORD and St Vincent’s hospices, in Renfrewshire. Well known health and fitness expert Alex Whelan has decided to gift his Pro-Life Fitness Centre gym, in Paisley to the newly founded Renfrewshire Sports Charity (RSC) as he retires from running the operation he founded 24 years ago. In a historic move Alex, 58, has granted a licence for RSC to run the Pro Life gym and the new charitable trust is hoping to raise half a million pounds in the next five years. The charity’s trustees have also set up a fund to help young sportsmen and women achieve their goals. Alex said: “As a long term supporter of both ACCORD and St Vincent hospices, I know how much they appreciate the support of the local community and I am delighted to be able to help in this way. “I will no longer be involved in the daily operation of the centre, but everything else remains the same. “What it does mean though, is that existing Pro-Life members and anyone who joins from now on can feel proud that they are helping two such worthwhile charities and perhaps some sporting stars of the future. “Every pound profit will go to the new trust.” Helen Simpson, chief executive of ACCORD hospice in Paisley said: “We are extremely grateful to be considered for sponsorship by the newly former RSC. All monies we receive will be gratefully appreciated by patients and families dealing with a life-limiting illness.” Kate Lennon, chief executive at St Vincent’s Hospice in Johnstone added: “We feel very privileged to be in this position and for the two hospices to be involved in this new and exciting venture. As well as helping raise cash for us, RSC will also be able to support up and coming young sports stars which is wonderful.” The RSC group was recently granted official charitable trust status by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator. Respected businessman Norman Walker, who will chair the RSC charity

said: “We are very grateful to Alex for this magnificent gift to the local community. It is a trailblazer and quite unique. I do not know of any other businessman who has handed a successful operation over to be run as a charity.” Mr Walker, who is chairman of ACCORD and also of the board at Paisley’s Kibble Education and Care Centre, added: “By considering staying with Pro-Life or indeed taking out a new membership people will be helping both hospices in their work to provide such special care for the people of Renfrewshire.” Pro-Life’s Gayle Brannigan has been appointed chief executive of RSC and all the gym staff will transfer to the new charity. Gayle said: “I’m very proud of Alex and feel honoured that he has placed his trust

in RSC to continue his legacy. “His generosity will allow us to do many good things for the hospices and for the people of Renfrewshire who hold both close to their hearts. There are very few people locally who haven’t had someone they know, love or care about helped by ACCORD or St Vincent’s. “The core elements which have taken Pro-Life go where it is today will remain the same. For the past three years Alex has been providing a personal service to members looking for new work out programmes and nutritional advice arriving here at 4.30am if he was needed and he never charged a penny. “I am pleased to say that with the blessing of the charity, Alex will still be around to offer this free expert advice to members.”

WHISKY WORKERS MARK PERNOD RICARD’S INTERNATIONAL DAY OF AWARENESS ON RESPONSIBLE DRINKING Employees of Scotch whisky and gin producer Chivas Brothers at Paisley celebrated parent company Pernod Ricard’s international day of awareness on responsible drinking by testing their knowledge of ‘The Code’. The company staged a live game show ‘The Code’ to increase awareness of Pernod Ricard’s Code for Commercial Communications - the group’s guidelines for advertising and promotion of its brands. Employees looked at examples from the world of advertising and had to answer which were compliant with the code and which were not. The annual Responsib’ALL Day has been running since 2011. Each year companies in the Pernod Ricard group – employing a total of 19,000 people worldwide – mark the occasion with local employee events. Last year Chivas Brothers chose the theme ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’, and the year before it covered ‘Alcohol and Youth’. Laurent Lacassagne, Chairman and CEO of Chivas Brothers, said: “Responsib’ALL Day is now in its fourth year, but the

EMPLOYEES ADD TO GRAND TOTAL FOR CHILDREN’S CHARITY Employees from Chivas Brothers’ Kilmalid and Paisley bottling plants have raised more than £2,600 for Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) with their latest charity events. The cash was raised in two stages. Everyone who attended the company’s festive parties at the end of 2013 was asked to donate £5, and additional funds were then generated by a grand raffle, in which any seasonal gifts sent to the company by its suppliers were given away in a prize draw. CHAS is a cause close to the hearts of Chivas Brothers employees – who have donated more than £133,000 since 1996. This includes donations from work events, individual fundraising and the company’s doubling up scheme – which matches amounts raised by employees by up to £500 per person per year. Manufacturing Director Alister McIntosh said: “The work that CHAS does for seriously ill children and their families is just phenomenal, and we are proud to support them in any way we can. Everyone gave generously again this year.

Developing Success

It’s all go at Muir Slicer. After being one of only 70 organisations in Scotland to achieve IiP Gold Accreditation, having one of their Modern Apprenticeship candidates winning runner up for the Scottish Training Federation Achiever of the Year award and being finalists in the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Business Awards last year, they’ve still not stopped. So far this year they have been invited to become Champions for Investors in People, increased business by 60%, launched their new website, had a visit to their offices from their local MSP, George Adam. They are also in

the process of developing distance and e-learning platforms and have already run Scotland’s only Professional Consulting Skills qualification. As well as delivering Modern Apprenticeships throughout Scotland across a wide variety of skill areas and having an achievement rate for their Modern Apprentices of over 90%, Muir Slicer have also been busy developing their Consultancy and Training offering to their clients. For example, as well as being City and Guilds, OCR, SQA and IOSH accredited training providers they are now also accredited with NEBOSH, CMI, ILM

and Highfield allowing them to deliver strategic level courses and qualifications like the Essential Consulting Skills Course as well as mandatory training like licensing qualifications and courses and qualifications for new managers to help them develop their skills in their new roles.
