President’s Welcome Welcome to the Summer 2017 issue of Business Matters. I hope by the time you read this summer will have arrived. I am pleased to say that there are some good news stories coming out of Renfrewshire. The most recent being that Paisley has been shortlisted for the UK City of Culture 2021. The UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport have confirmed that the eleven towns and cities bidding for the title has been reduced to just five; Paisley, Coventry, Stoke Sunderland and Swansea. There has never been a Scottish winner and with Perth dropping out we are now Scotland’s bid and hopefully the whole country will get behind us. The initial bid was the product of a wide range of local groups, community and cultural organisations, schools and young people, business and council all working together on a shared vision to change Paisley and indeed Renfrewshire for the better and make the area a great place in which to live and work. If the bid were to be successful it is estimated that the local economy could be boosted to the tune of £172million and create the equivalent of 4,700 jobs over a ten year period. Two weeks ago I took the opportunity of visiting Hull, the current City of Culture, to see for myself what benefits the title had brought to the city. Immediately it was apparent that the city was going through a transformation, with noticeable infrastructure and building works all around. On speaking to businesses and some of the city’s blue coated volunteers, they all spoke in glowing terms about the new investments and dramatic increase in visitor numbers coming to the city as well as the sense of pride the event had brought back to the area. One important message was that everyone agreed the improvements must not be a one year project and that they must carry on to leave a lasting legacy. Phase 2 of our bid has to be submitted by the end of September so let’s keep the momentum going and convince the judges that Paisley deserves to win. I am delighted to announce that my Chamber Board have made a substantial financial commitment to support 2021 if our final bid is successful.

Two other good news stories to come out recently, relate to the announcement by the First Minister that an £8.9 million Lightweight Manufacturing Centre is to be established and based at the Doosan Babcock complex in Renfrew and run by the AFRC. It is, I believe the first step towards creating a National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland – right here in the heart of Renfrewshire. The second story is that planning applications have been submitted in respect of two major infrastructure projects which form part of the “City Deal” initiative. One proposal’s aim is to regenerate the Clyde waterfront as an attractive area supporting residential, industrial, business, retail and leisure opportunities. It includes the construction of an opening road bridge across the Clyde linking the communities of Renfrew, Yoker and Clydebank. The plans behind the other proposal - the £39 million Glasgow Airport Investment Area (GAIA) hope to facilitate the creation of a world class business and commercial location in the heart of Renfrewshire connected by land, sea and arise. If approved, both schemes should create not only better connectivity to our region but also provide a large number of jobs which are sorely needed. On the political front it is hard to believe since our last issue we have been involved in two sets of elections both general and local. Let me offer my congratulations to our returning MPs representing Renfrewshire Mhairi Black and Gavin Newlands, and to all our new council members, including the new leader Iain Nicolson. Your Chamber works closely with both local and national politicians and we look forward to continuing the strong relationship. Brexit negotiations are underway and after months of engagement British Chambers of Commerce and the Chamber Network will now be one of just five business organisations to be members of the formal body for business engagement on Brexit. The others being the CBI, IoD, EEF and FSB. We don’t know yet what Brexit will look like but the business community is looking for certainty and stability from the Scottish and UK governments with a commitment to focus on the priorities

for business and our economy. The Chamber supported premier partner University of the West of Scotland at the recent Higher Education, Teaching & Learning Conference (HETL). This was the first time the prestigious conference has been held in the UK and was attended by 250 delegates from around the world and enjoyed a 3 day informative program which ended with a keynote address from Principal Craig Mahoney. The Chamber supported an informal evening reception for the delegates at our fine Abbey at which I had the honour of speaking, extolling the virtues of Paisley and Renfrewshire. The event proved a great opportunity to show off our town’s assets to an international audience. As is the norm we do not have any events in July however the Chamber team have been busy launching Rocco 2017. The Awards are now open for entry and are a great opportunity for you to be recognised for your efforts and achievements in the last year. Winning a prestigious Rocco Award is not an easy task, the shortlisting and judging process is taken very seriously. I encourage you to enter at www. RoccoAwards.com All that remains is for me to wish you and enjoyable summer and hope you have an opportunity to enjoy a break over that time. Support your Chamber and your Chamber will support you.

A Warm Welcome from our Chief Executive Announced this week is the fantastic news Paisley has been shortlisted for 2021 UK City of Culture: a great result for the Town. However the next stage of the competition is even tougher, an extended Bid document is to be submitted at the end of September, so we need more support and more companies to engage with the Bid, the support you have shown so far has been crucial. The business community is making a genuine difference to how the judging panel perceive the strength and depth of Paisley’s bid. Thank you to all our exhibitors and attendees who came along to Business Matters in Renfrewshire on the 18th of May at the Lagoon, Paisley. The event attracted close to 60 exhibitors with strong attendance at each of the free seminars on hot topics. The value of the day continues to grow and we hope to be back next year. Rocco 2017 is now open for entry, see details at www.roccoawards.com and page 31. Our main sponsor will be

announced at the end of September so please watch this space. The Roccos are an opportunity to be recognised for your success in the last year but it’s not easy - there is stiff competition to even make the shortlist and an achievement in itself. The Awards ceremony takes place on Friday 17th November at the Normandy Hotel. We are seeking your support for our Skills Ambassador program which returns in early September - could you be a role model and help mentor a group of young people? This program has been getting strong results and we seek a fresh input of experience to work with our young people, meeting with them five or six times over the school year. Contact Fran Porter at the Chamber for more details on how you can help. STEM fortnight will be returning in October - look out for more details soon. If your organisation can offer an activity for a young person in a STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) please get in touch.

And finally welcome to our new Development Manager Jill Carrino. Jill can help you maximise your membership and highlight the full range of benefits available, please contact her on 0141 847 5451 and she will be delighted to come and meet with you. Have a great summer and best regards,

Colin Pratt receiving his Chief Executive’s Award from Renfrewshire Leisure’s Joyce McKellar.

Awards night presenter Gina McKie.

Stars came out for awards bash The stars were out in force for the annual Renfrewshire Leisure staff awards bash. The Star Awards ceremony hosted by Clyde 1 radio presenter, Gina McKie was held at Johnstone Town Hall and a host of accolades were handed out to the great and the good of staff working in local sports centres, swimming pools, libraries, museum and community halls. Among the awards presented was the Chief Executive’s Award for Outstanding Achievement, which was presented to Colin Pratt, Renfrewshire Leisure’s Cultural Venues Development Manager. The Team of the Year Award went to Johnstone Town Hall Operations team of Jennifer Ann Northcote, Karen Pattison, Donald Hampson, Tracy Weir, Colin Smith, Geraldine Smith, Carol Harris and Katie Sweeney.

And tribute was paid to popular leisure manager, Gerry Noble who sadly died earlier this year with a new award - The Noble Award for Young Achievers - that was presented to marketing support assistant, Graham Barr. Three members of staff were also commended for their acts of heroism in helping save people’s lives when they were off duty. The first of those was Natalie Stewart, who helped rescue a woman who had fallen into the River Cart, in Paisley town centre and held on to her before the emergency services arrived. The second was Steve Truesdale who gave First Aid to a young boy who had been knocked down while they waited for an ambulance to arrive. And the third was Carol Doyle who was closing Renfrew’s Victory Baths one

night when she saw a man had collapsed in the street and she used a defibrillator that is kept at the pool on him before paramedics arrived. Newly-elected leader of Renfrewshire Council, Iain Nicolson and news chairperson of the Renfrewshire Leisure Board of Trustees, Councillor Lisa-Marie Hughes were guests at the awards ceremony. Renfrewshire Leisure chief executive, Joyce McKellar said: “Our most important asset is our staff, as they are vital to provide a first class sports, leisure and cultural service to the public. “It’s only right that we pay tribute to those who give so much to the people of Renfrewshire and go above and beyond the call of duty.”

GLYNHILL HOTEL INVESTS £2.5M Originally a mansion house, bought in 1967 by the Nicholas family, The Glynhill Hotel has grown from a 22 roomed hotel, into Renfrew’s only fully serviced hotel complete with 147 bedrooms, bars, restaurants, a function suite for 350 and a leisure club. In the last two and half years alone the family have invested some £2.5m in the hotel. Managing Director Maroulla Nicholas explains, “You can’t stand still. We’ve improved our efficiency by sending our staff on courses, and we’ve implemented changes in our processes. In fact, we’ve saved more than £50k with the changes we have brought in.” However, the biggest changes have been in the hotel itself. One of the first enhancements made was to create a Champagne Terrace outside of the Banqueting Suite to enhance the wedding offering. At the same time, the function suite was redecorated, and the chairs re-upholstered, with a new bespoke zebra-style carpet laid, and a brand new partition installed. The carpet

was then extended to flow through in to the adjoining Reception Lounges at the front of the hotel, adjacent to the Champagne Terrace. The Reception area, Cocktail bar and Gourmet Restaurant have also been revamped, with brand new Amtico-like flooring laid throughout. The Cocktail Bar itself has seen a revamp, with designer cream weave wallpaper which compliments the new contemporary looking chairs. The Reception foyer, and Grand Manor Staircase were refreshed

with grand thistle wallpaper. Although all of the public areas have been refreshed, it’s the bedrooms that really have accounted for much of the spend. All of the hotels Standard Rooms have been upgraded, creating 45 Boutique Bedrooms which have the wow factor. The hotel has also created three more bedrooms, having transformed storage rooms in to a three room apartment, complete with kitchen facilities. The apartment can also be sold as three individual rooms.

GLASGOW BREAKS ANOTHER RECORD AS JUNE PASSENGER NUMBERS HIT ONE-MILLION MARK FOR THE FIRST TIME • 5.7% INCREASE ON JUNE 2016 PASSENGER NUMBERS • EU-SCHEDULED TRAFFIC UP 16.1% For the first time in its 51-year history Glasgow Airport recorded more than one million passengers in the month of June, representing a 5.7% increase on the same period in 2016. Demand for EU-scheduled services increased by 16.1% thanks to additional capacity on city-break destinations including Berlin, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bucharest and Dusseldorf as well as new routes to Brussels, Valencia and Lisbon. The airport’s success in strengthening its European connectivity continued with the introduction of a new twice-weekly Blue Air route to the Romanian city of Iasi. International traffic grew by 10.4% as the busy school holiday period got underway, while long-haul routes were up 12.4% due to strong demand on services to North America and Dubai. Amanda McMillan, managing director

of Glasgow Airport, said: “June is traditionally one of our busiest months of the year, but to exceed one million passengers is yet another significant achievement for Glasgow Airport. “Our strong performance in the first half of 2017 has been driven by our efforts to enhance existing services and expand our growing network with new destinations to give even more choice to our customers, including the launch of Ryanair’s new Zadar route last week. “Later this month we’ll see a return of Scotland’s only direct link with Seoul as Korean Air’s in-bound charter service returns with an additional flight.

Amanda McMillan managing director Glasgow Airport

“Route development continues to be a key priority in driving growth at the airport and we’re looking forward to welcoming a number of services in the second half of 2017 to exciting new destinations including Madrid, Krakow and Frankfurt.”

Keeping your finger on the pulse Too often people from all walks of life view health and safety as a something that reduces profit or stops the job getting done but that has not the intention of the legislative framework. True there are penalties when things go wrong but there can be benefits from managing for health and safety. Integrating health and safety within your business objectives and practices helps everyone to take ownership of what they do in the workplace on a day to day basis. It contributes to sustainability, ensuring the business continues. It contributes to how others view your business locally and nationally impacting on the reputation of the business. How employers communicate with employees and listen to what they say

helps to break down any existing barriers whether perceived or real. Managing for health and safety or environmental issues is best achieved as a team effort and not undertaken in isolation. You need to be alive to what is happening within your organisation. As a business leader have you ever considered the impact on the life of an individual who has been injured or suffered from ill health due to a work activity or how you would feel if you could have prevented this from happening? How aware are you of the legal requirements for managing for health and safety in the workplace? Have you considered the financial implications of something going wrong

What started with a conversation between Sam Marshallsay (Employability Project Leader) from Gleniffer High School and Fred Cullum (MD) Enable Safety Ltd at Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce B2B event in 2016 culminated in six pupils being awarded IOSH Safety Passport. Following the B2B event Sam and Fred met with Paula Leca from Developing the Young Workforce (DYW). Sam wanted to be able to give young people an edge, when leaving school and it has been a long term ambition of Fred to talk to young people and dispel the health and safety myths and fears. The result was pupils undertaking the IOSH Working Safely course which was delivered to fit with the school timetable. On successful completion of the course there was the option to receive a certificate of IOSH Safety Passport. With some pupils looking at trades linked to the construction industry all opted for the ‘Passport’ which is recognised as satisfying the health and safety element of the Construction Industry Training Board linked to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) for competence. The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health is the only chartered organisation for health and safety practitioners and recognised globally therefore anyone achieving a pass in an IOSH course has reached a level of competence in health and safety. and safety grants are generally not provided for persons undertaking accredited or licenced courses which lead to greater skill development despite such courses being optional. Therefore partnership working is the key to supporting and developing the health and safety knowledge and skills of young people. The HALO signs MoU with UWS for Enterprise & Innovation Hub The HALO Kilmarnock Limited (The HALO) and UWS have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at creating a ground breaking Enterprise and Innovation Hub as part of the regeneration of the former Diageo bottling plant site in Kilmarnock. Marie Macklin CBE, a director of The HALO, and Professor Ehsan Mesbahi, Vice-Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of UWS, put pen to paper at a signing ceremony at Paisley Campus. The HALO is a £65m mixed use brown field regeneration that will create an inspirational and imaginative urban park, a dynamic commercial, educational, cultural, lifestyle and leisure quarter and a light manufacturing facility alongside key worker private rental accommodation in the centre of Kilmarnock. The development is being seen as an exemplary collaboration between public, private, further and higher education sectors aimed at providing a sustainable facility for the town. The agreement between UWS and The HALO aims to ensure that an Enterprise and Innovation Hub, including a digital and cyber research facility, is central to the development. UWS and The HALO will now investigate how this partnership approach would enable research and development by the university’s students to be commercialised in collaboration with private sector companies within the Enterprise and Innovation Hub, providing opportunities for training and skills developmentm, re-

skilling and up-skilling, work placements and Entrepreneurial mentoring and support. Marie Macklin, a director of The HALO, said: “A critical element in The HALO’s success will be the collaboration between the public, private and educational sectors in order that we meet the aspirations and needs of the people of Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire and beyond. “We are confident that, working together with UWS, we can create an Enterprise and Innovation Hub that will provide Ayrshire with a meaningful place in the fourth industrial revolution, the digital world. “I look forward to working with UWS to develop our collective thinking in this vitally important aspect for the economy of the area.” Professor Mesbahi of UWS said: “We are

excited by the opportunity to be closely involved in creating an Enterprise and Innovation Hub that would include digital and cyber research. This would provide intensive, varied and practical learning opportunities for our students to gain knowledge and develop the entrepreneurial skills that are in such short supply in the sector. “There is potential for creating a distinctive learning experience that would attract students from around the world and equip local students with internationally-recognised qualifications to develop their futures as entrepreneurs. “A further critical aspect of an enterprise and innovation hub is the opportunity to encourage original research which will have a tangible and visible effect on society.”

UWS celebrated in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2017 UWS has been ranked in the world’s top 200 universities under 50 years of age in recent Times Higher Education [THE] Young University Rankings 2017. The Young University Rankings measure institutions across the world on their teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income using a methodology calibrated to reflect the characteristics of younger universities. Alongside UWS’s Young University ranking, in the category 151-200, the University was also placed by THE in the

Top 18 of the Millennials in an analysis of universities of a similar age – a rating reflecting the significant growth and achievements of UWS over recent years. The THE Young University Rankings, are designed to show the impact on the world stage of universities in years rather than centuries and to highlight future rising stars. Professor Craig Mahoney, UWS Principal and Vice-Chancellor, commented: “This is an amazing achievement for University of the West of Scotland and truly reflects

the hard work and effort of colleagues across the University campuses and the tremendous input from our partners and stakeholders. “When I was interviewed for my post at UWS, I said that it was my ambition to have the University feature in international rankings. 2017 sees us celebrate 25 years as a university and marks 10 years since we became University of the West of Scotland, so to be recognised by THE at this early stage is a really proud moment for us all.”

Homeless World Cup coverage wins national broadcast award Online video coverage of the Homeless World Cup which took place last year at Glasgow’s George Square has won the Best Innovation Award at the Royal Television Society (Scotland) Awards 2017, which were presented at the Òran Mór in Glasgow on 17 May 2017. More than a dozen current students and recent graduates from University of the West of Scotland (UWS) contributed to QTV Sports’ coverage of the Homeless World Cup, which took place last July in Glasgow. Over the course of seven days last July 416 matches were played on the three specially-constructed pitches in George Square. Action from all three pitches was live streamed, with real-time video highlights and interviews posted to social media channels throughout each day. Glasgow-based producers and creative agency QTV Sports was the host broadcaster providing exclusive action footage of all the games, and the company’s strategic partnership with UWS provided students the invaluable

opportunity to be involved in the coverage of the Homeless World Cup Johnny Mone, Head of Enterprise Services at UWS, said: “We are delighted that the QTV’s coverage of the Homeless World Cup has won a Royal Television Society Award. Winning team from UWS “We have been working with QTV Sports since the company was founded, and entered into a strategic partnership two years ago. Winning this award is great recognition not just for the company but also the students and graduates who worked with QTV to help produce their coverage of this global event.” Jack McGill, CEO of QTV Sports, added: “Winning this award is a fantastic

Protect your business: Beware… In a recently reported English case of MPT v Peel the Court had to consider whether a business was entitled to certain interim remedies against 2 former senior staff. Those 2 individuals had agreed various restrictions within their employment contracts, including a wide ranging protection against revealing confidential information. There were also certain restrictive covenants. The employees had decided to set up in competition following their restrictions ending. That business would compete directly with their former employer. Prior to leaving their employment, client and company data was copied and downloaded and then removed. The individuals did not tell the truth when they were asked about their intentions. The employer discovered individuals had begun a competing business. The former employer sought an injunction (called interdict in Scots law - a Court order preventing the party from doing something). Duty to tell the truth? One interesting issue in this case was the extent to which the individuals were under a duty to tell the truth in relation to their intention to compete with the business following the ending of their restrictions. There are certain terms and duties implied into every contract of employment. One such duty is that of fidelity and honesty. It was alleged in this case that one incident of the duty of good faith is to answer questions truthfully. The Judge noted that there are some exceptions to this principle, one being that employees are entitled to refuse to answer questions about their private lives. The Judge considered the position and said he was “far from satisfied that these employees were under a duty to disclose their true intentions”. He said that: “The law will step in to prevent unfair competition or to hold employees to enforceable restrictive covenants or to protect confidential

information. Equally, employees must not induce others to breach their own contracts of employment, conspire to cause their employer injury or, in most cases, solicit their colleagues for their new enterprise. Subject to these matters, employees are otherwise free to make their own way in the world. I should therefore be reluctant to hold that an incident of the duty of fidelity is that, when asked a straight question a departing employee is under a contractual obligation to explain his own confidential and nascent plans to set up in lawful competition.” He did note, however, if the individuals owed the company fiduciary duties the position may have been different. This would apply, for example, in relation to company directors and certain senior staff. Confidentiality – Focus the restriction The two former employees admitted to copying and taking away company data which they conceded was wrongful. The Judge found that this was a flagrant breach of the duties of fidelity and could well have been an infringement of the employer’s database rights and/or its copyright in its technical drawings. However, it was argued that the confidentiality restriction was far too wide to be enforceable. Not only did it apply indefinitely but the range of material contained within the express provision rendered the clause too wide to be enforceable. The Judge noted that confidentiality clauses can be enforced even where they are of indeterminate duration but it is important to ensure that wide and generic definitions of confidential information are avoided. One reason to avoid such wide clauses is that where employers seek to protect confidential information by way of an interdict, it is “essential that they should make it absolutely clear what it is that they are seeking to protect”. In this case the Judge decided to issue a more restricted order to prevent the 2 individuals (and the new company)

David Hoey, Partner, Accredited Employment Law Specialist

from retaining, copying, using, manufacturing machines in specific ways and from divulging to any third party a specified list of documents. Practical issues It is very clear that the law in this area is complex. There are a large number of different issues arising, both in terms of employment law specifically but also in terms of the duties that arise as a consequence of the parties relationship. While the above case arose under English law, there are similarities in the position under Scots law. The case underlines the need for employers to ensure proper consideration is given to protecting the business. This includes ensuring the contract of employment contains carefully drafted confidentiality restrictions which are focussed and relevant. It also includes the need to consider whether bespoke post termination restrictions (restrictive covenants) are needed and would be enforceable. Taking practical action now by seeking expert legal assistance to protecting the organisation is key. Doing nothing is no longer an option.

£6MILLION DEVELOPMENT OPEN FOR BUSINESS AT HILLINGTON PARK A new £6million development on one of Scotland’s largest business parks has come onto the commercial property market following successful completion of the construction phase. Evolution Court, an 85,476 sq ft scheme made up by four separate units ranging in size from 17,728 sq ft to 23,950 sq ft, is situated on Hillington Park adjacent to the busy M8 motorway. How the Superhero that is Innovation defeated the Grim Reaper of demolition Standing on a beautiful spot alongside the White Cart, The former Anchor Thread Mill Complex proudly represents the culture and history of a town, whose history and prosperity were products of the once booming thread industry. Formerly employing over 5000 people, parts of the complex were threatened with demolition as recently as 2000. When architect Marcus Dean saw the potential to breathe new life into the buildings, his vision of transforming the site into a bustling business centre began with the redevelopment of the Old Embroidery Mill in 1984. His redevelopment continued with The Sir James Clark Building in 1993, Mile End Mill in 2000 and The Anchor Mill in 2006. Following initial pessimism in the 80’s from the local council, The Abbey Mill Business Centre is now testament to how vision, passion and innovation can defeat the grim reaper of demolition. Gladly Renfrewshire has changed; Renfrewshire Council are now ambitious for business to succeed and over the years have been very supportive. Mill girls of yesteryear would still recognise the outside of the buildings, but today Abbey Mill offices are contemporary gems in disguise: traditional on the outside, but strikingly modern within. Providing office and workshop space to a wide variety of businesses, from high tech companies, charities and government agencies to small businesses and start-ups, Abbey Mill certainly has the wheels of industry turning again within the mill buildings. On the question of how business has changed over the years, Marcus said, “We have seen the average size of offices go up and also the number of companies wishing to relocate from the centre of Paisley. There is also the trend for companies choosing Paisley over Glasgow. Abbey Mill has therefore attracted a lot of business into the area by offering modern space within a historical building, a concept that has also worked well in former Mill towns such as Halifax, Bradford and Bolton. We have added a number of key tenants

such as a cafe, nursery and gym, which has also helped us grow. Going the extra mile for new tenants and working with them to create a bespoke space that few other landlords are willing to do, is highest on the agenda for The Abbey Mill team. Allowing businesses to grow without any obstacles, by providing bespoke separate offices, meeting rooms, IT systems, glass partitioning, corporate colour schemes and bespoke carpets, all within historical listed buildings, has seen tenant retention rates at Abbey Mill remain at a steady high. Possibilities of flood lighting the last remaining chimney and copper fish scale domed towers on these iconic buildings are being explored. Innovation continues to abound at Abbey Mill as the opening of a new high tech hub approaches. Due for completion in late Autumn, The Abbey Mill Hub will host a range of new office space plus shared meeting and relaxation areas, featuring designer furniture and unique wall features and fittings. The grim reaper of demolition has been banished forever by the superhero that is innovation.

Haulage firm flying the flag for Paisley 2021 with truck

Renfrewshire Council Leader Iain Nicolson & Craig Leslie Managing Director Gordon Leslie Group

A Renfrewshire-based distribution company will be flying the flag for Paisley’s UK City of Culture 2021 bid – after revealing a branded truck and trailer. Hillington-based Gordon Leslie Group provide distribution and storage services throughout the UK and beyond, and joins a wide range of companies who have agreed to provide funding should Paisley’s bid be successful. And new Renfrewshire Council leader Iain Nicolson – also the chair of the Paisley 2021 Partnership Board – paid the company a visit to see the truck and trailer – covered in colourful 2021 branding – for himself. Paisley is bidding for the title as part of a wider push to use the area’s unique cultural and heritage offer to transform its future. The town’s initial bid was submitted in April and competition organisers at the UK Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport are due to announce the shortlist for the second

stage over the summer. To date the Paisley 2021 bid has been backed by almost 200 local firms – including internationally-important names Glasgow Airport, intu Braehad and WH Malcolm. There has also been support from Coats PLC – which started life in the town and remains the world’s largest industrial thread manufacturer – and whisky giant Diageo, who bottle 30% of the world’s Scotch from their Shieldhall base. Councillor Nicolson said: “The UK City of Culture bid has already taken awareness of what Paisley has to offer to a new level. No matter what happens next, that will bring new visitors and investment into the area for local businesses to feed off. “Should the bid be successful, there would be even more economic opportunity and thousands of new jobs for Renfrewshire, as well as all the social benefits from creating opportunities for people to get involved in cultural activity. “We are fortunate to be home to large

employers such as Gordon Leslie Group – we are delighted they have thrown their support behind the bid and it’s great to think the truck and trailer will be spreading a bit of Paisley on its travels.” Gordon Leslie Group is a secondgeneration family business, which has been based in Renfrewshire almost 50 years. Managing director Craig Leslie said: “The firm was started by my father and has been in Renfrewshire since the 1970s – first at Abbotsinch Industrial Estate, then Linwood, and now Hillington. “Paisley 2021 is a fantastic opportunity to put the area back on the map and will provide a much-needed boost for local businesses in terms of attracting investment and creating jobs. “We are behind what the bid is trying to achieve and I would call on other businesses to consider how they could get involved and help promote the town.” You can see the Paisley 2021 business wall and find out more about the bid at paisley2021.co.uk

Paisley’s bid to bring Mod back to town in 2021 is lodged

Gordon MacLennan chair & Provost Lorraine Cameron vice chair, members from Renfrewshire Schools Pipe Band and Skerryvore

A bid to bring the world’s largest celebration of Gaelic language and culture back to Paisley has been lodged - for what would be one of the centrepieces of the town’s potential UK City of Culture 2021 year. Paisley is bidding for the Royal National Mòd in four years time – with the town’s one previous staging of the event in 2013 being the second-largest in the event’s history. Renfrewshire Council has already ring-fenced a budget of £185,000 plus substantial extra in-kind support to cover hosting costs – with the event expected to bring thousands of visitors and a sevenfigure economic boost to the area. Bid bosses believe Paisley’s central location, excellent transport links, unique venues and established major event track record will add up to another successful Mòd. If the town was named UK City of Culture 2021, the Mòd would be key to that year’s programme of events. Paisley’s Mòd 2021 bid will be handed in at the Inverness offices of event organisers An Comunn Gaidhealach on Friday by the chair of the local organising committee, Gordon MacLennan. Gordon – also the chief executive of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport – was joined at Paisley Gilmour Street station to see the bid off by vice-chair, Provost Lorraine Cameron, members of

the Renfrewshire schools pipe band, and some of top trad band Skerryvore, who are backing Paisley’s Mòd bid. He said: “We would be absolutely thrilled if An Comun were to bring the Mòd back to Paisley in 2021, and believe we have put together a very strong bid. “The last – and only – Mòd held here in 2013 attracted 8,000 people over nine days and delivered a £1.4m economic impact, and Paisley was very well received as a location by visitors from across Scotland. “Aside from our unique venues, such as Paisley Town Hall and Abbey, our transport links are second-to-none – with an international airport on our doorstep, easy access to the motorway, and Paisley Gilmour Street station being Scotland’s fourth-busiest, handling five million passengers a year and a train to Glasgow every eight minutes.” Provost Cameron added: “Renfrewshire is committed to the development of the Gaelic language, with a five-figure annual investment in arts programming, Gaelic language plan, and more than 1,500 local people with Gaelic language skills. “We have also invested in the next generation, with our annual Fèis Phàislig music festival having seen around 700 local young people engaged in Gaelic and traditional music, with musicians visiting

27 local primary schools this year alone. “The area also has a strong record of supporting traditional music, with many trad acts featuring on the bill for our annual Spree festival in October, and the MG Alba Scottish Trad Awards coming to Paisley for the first time this December. “We want to build on that by hosting another successful Mòd whether we win the Uk City of Culture title or not.” Martin Gillespie – a founder member of Skerryvore, in Paisley last year as a Spree headliner – added: “I have a long association with the Mòd – myself and my brother competed in several when we were young – so it’s an event that means a lot to me. “It’s good to see such a strong bid coming from a place in the central belt as that would help open up the event to new audiences. “We played Paisley Town Hall last year – it would make a great main venue for Mòd competition and there’s no doubt the town would be a good host.” Paisley’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021 is part of a wider push to transform the town’s future using heritage, culture and events and the Uk Government is expected to announce the shortlist for the next stage of the competition over the summer. Plans submitted for major Planning applications have been submitted for two major infrastructure projects led by Renfrewshire Council through the Glasgow City Region City Deal. Authorities in Renfrewshire, West Dunbartonshire and Glasgow will consider the details of the £90.7million Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project, which aims to regenerate the Clyde Waterfront as an attractive area supporting residential, industrial, business, retail and leisure opportunities. It includes construction of the only opening road bridge across the River Clyde and new roads and cycle routes to better link the communities of Renfrew with Yoker and Clydebank. Plans behind the £39.1million Glasgow Airport Investment Area project have also been submitted to Renfrewshire planning officials. Construction of a new bridge over the White Cart, realignment of Abbotsinch Road, and new cycle routes form the project proposals to improve connections between the existing Westway, Inchinnan and Airport business parks. It will also facilitate the creation of a world class business and commercial location in the heart of Renfrewshire, connected by air, sea and land. If approved, work on both projects is expected to start on site in 2018 with construction completed in 2020. Extensive engagement with more than 2000 people has signalled strong public support for the projects, with

feedback surveys showing 90 per cent backing for the Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project, while 94 per cent of respondents are behind the Glasgow Airport Investment Area project. The projects are funded through the £1.13billion Glasgow City Region City Deal, an agreement between the UK Government, Scottish Government and eight local authorities across the Glasgow City Region to deliver improved infrastructure, create new jobs, tackle unemployment and drive innovation and growth. City Deal projects will bring big business boost Bob Grant, Chief Executive of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, believes the Glasgow City Region City Deal projects led by Renfrewshire Council will bring jobs and business benefits to the local area. He said: “These projects offer tremendous benefits for local businesses and have the potential to transform how we do business in Renfrewshire. These major infrastructure investments will make it easier for employers to do business; easier for employees to get to

and from their places of work and open up the potential for future investment. “Around 1400 jobs are expected during the construction period and a further 11,000 permanent jobs could be created through existing business expansion and new businesses being attracted to the area as a result of the City Deal infrastructure investment. “Improved connections will also benefit the public and local employers, with 59,000 jobs becoming more accessible to Renfrewshire residents. “I am very excited at the potential of the Glasgow Airport Investment Area to bring highly skilled jobs to the area. The signs are already there - the First Minister recently announced that an £8.9million specialist centre to develop new manufacturing processes for lightweight materials for the aerospace and automotive industries will be established here in Renfrewshire. “It has been encouraging to see the public are firmly behind these projects and I look forward to seeing the work get underway. These are key projects in the Glasgow City Region City Deal, which has the potential to unlock £3.3billion in private sector investment benefitting the whole region.”

Tim Allan will serve in the non-exec post from April 2017 to March 2019. Tim Allan is the Chief Executive of Unicorn Property Group, an award winning Scottish property company and is the Founder and Director of Motor Fuel Group, the second largest independent fuel retailer in the UK with more than 370 stations, turning over £2bn per year. Commenting on his appointment as the new SCC President, Tim Allan, said: "I have long been a proud advocate of the role Chambers of Commerce play in Scotland and around the world and it is a great honour for me to take on the role of President during this critical time for the business community. Across Scotland, businesses are working hard to grow, to keep jobs secure and tap into new markets, and I look forward to utilising my role as President to champion the needs of business and showcase the contributions we make to Scotland's economy. "The core part of my role will be informed by tackling the key challenges facing the economic landscape of our country: navigating through an uncertain and ever-shifting investment environment, the need to create a flexible, skilled workforce suited to a modern economy and increasing

Renfrewshire Chamber says 2021 bid will be good for business Renfrewshire commerce chiefs believe Paisley’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021 could be an economic bonanza for the area – and will financially support the town’s potential year in the spotlight. The area’s largest business membership organisation – Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce – will make a five-figure contribution to the costs of hosting the prestigious culture title, should Paisley win. Bid bosses estimate hosting the title could bring in a £172m economic boost for the local economy – while creating more than 4,700 jobs over a ten-year period. Paisley has been shortlisted by the UK Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport have placed the town on the shortlist for the next stage of the competition. The town will submit a second-stage bid in the autumn, with the winner announced at the end of the year. Management from the chamber showed their support on a visit to one of their members – Braeheadbased internet firm Boston Networks, which recently won a £1m council contract to supply free public wifi to Paisley town centre. Renfrewshire Chamber are following in the footsteps of other big-name firms who have agreed to support the 2021 year – Glasgow Airport, intu Braehead, Diageo, Gordon Leslie Group and WH Malcolm, as well Coats PLC, the world’s largest industrial thread manufacturer, which

started life in the town. The organisation’s chief executive Bob Grant, who is a member of the Paisley 2021 executive bid team, said: “The chamber board are financially supporting Paisley 2021 because they recognise winning the title would bring a massive economic boost to Renfrewshire, and our members would share in that. “The bid has already raised Paisley’s profile and helped promote it as an attractive place to visit, work and invest. “Now we have been shortlisted the work to create a new visitor economy based around Paisley’s unique heritage assets will continue, creating jobs and footfall for local traders. “But winning the title would take that to new levels – giving us a yearlong programme of major events and an international platform from which to build a long-lasting economic transformation, just as previous winners Derry did in 2013 and current titleholders Hull are doing now. Boston Networks – named employer of the year at the chamber’s annual ROCCO awards last November – will soon be rolling out a free public-access wifi system in Paisley, Renfrew and Johnstone town centres. Councillor Iain Nicolson, Renfrewshire Council leader and chair of the Paisley 2021 partnership board said: “We thank Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce for their generous contribution to the 2021 bid. “The bid supports a wider

Tom Johnston, Scott McEwan & Bob Grant

plan by the council to use our tremendous events, architecture and history to make Renfrewshire a key visitor destination. “Part of that is around making sure a 21st-century infrastructure is in place – which is why it is fitting Boston Networks are involved in this announcement, as the work they are doing for us to roll out free public wifi is key to that.” Scott McEwan, chief executive of Boston Networks, added: “We are delighted to add our backing to the Paisley 2021 bid – the work around it is already creating

opportunities for firms like ours and there will be even more if the town wins. “I would urge all our fellow chamber members and other local businesses to consider how they can get involved – by working together to make the town a more attractive place to invest and visit, we all stand to benefit.” Renfrewshire Chamber provides networking and mentoring opportunities, as well as legal and HR support, to its hundreds of members. Sticks & Stones may break your bones... I Am Me Scotland is a community charity that works in partnership with Police Scotland to raise awareness of and tackle disability hate crime. Disability Hate Crime is one of the most under reported crimes in the UK, with an estimated 97% going unreported. There are 1 million people in Scotland registered as disabled or with a long term illness. Keep Safe was developed in response to focus groups conducted in 2013, where disabled people said they did not feel safe when out in their local community. Keep Safe works in partnership with Police Scotland and a network of local businesses to create ‘Keep Safe’ places for disabled, vulnerable, and elderly people when out and about in the community. People can access these premises to seek assistance and help if they feel lost, confused, scared, in danger, or have been the victim of a crime. Keep Safe

Places are identified by displaying a sticker in the window, but are also listed on the I Am Me Scotland website and on the free Keep Safe Scotland app. Keep Safe cards are available for anyone and detail information about any health conditions, communication requirements and who to contact in the event of an emergency. Cards are available free from Keep Safe premises, to download from www. iammescotland.co.uk or by contacting I Am Me Scotland. The Keep Safe initiative is a national initiative and is being rolled out across Scotland in partnership with other Local Authorities. In order to monitor and evaluate Keep Safe as it expands across Scotland, we would greatly appreciate it if you could fill in this short survey. For further information on I Am Me Scotland, Disability Hate Crime awareness sessions, or becoming a Keep Safe place, please contact us: iamme@renfrewshire.gov.uk, 0141 618 6241

Thermo Fisher Scientific, Get Involved Day 2017

Over 170 Inchinnan employees joined their colleagues around the globe to give back to the local community during the Thermo Fisher Scientific 2017 annual volunteering day. Inchinnan employees clocked up 500 volunteering hours, participating in a variety of activities and supporting various local charities. The activities included shrub and tree

planting on Knowes Farm Landfill Site near Beith with EADHA Enterprises, tidying Lamont Farm for their 40th Anniversary open weekend, general garden tidy, jet washing and fence staining at Accord Hospice, St Vincent’s Hospice and Renfrewshire Support Living Initiative. Some of our volunteers returned to Renfrewshire Foodbank for a third year, and there was an on-site litter

pick around the Inchinnan Site. On the day, the weather was glorious and everyone said they had a great day, and were very happy to support worthwhile local causes.

6 reasons why you need social media training In light of last month’s successful ‘Embrace the Space’ course, we thought we’d take a look at why social media training is so very important for small businesses. Social media marketing is often an afterthought for small businesses. Sometimes it’s run by the youngest (read: tech-savviest) team member, and can be just one of their many responsibilities. But, social media marketing can help small businesses increase brand engagement and land new customers. 71% of customers who’ve had a good social media experience with a brand are likely to recommend them to a friend – so you really can’t afford to miss out. Here are six clear reasons why you should consider social media marketing training for your small business: 1. Come up with a defined strategy Developing a defined social media strategy is one of the top reasons why marketers struggle with this type of marketing. Whether that’s because staff don’t understand the specifics of major social media platforms, or because they’re lacking in time, social media training can help you develop an effective approach. 2. Identify and target specific audiences Social media is a great tool for reaching new audiences, but only if you know how to look for them. Things like using the right hashtags on Twitter, targeting relevant people on Facebook and posting on certain platforms will make sure you reach the right audience. Social media training

Gary Ennis, Founder and Managing Director of NSDesign Ltd

can help you figure out which audiences reside where, and how to appeal to them. 3. Learn about tools and tricks Experts usually host social media training events. They know exactly what they’re talking about. They’ll be able to give you tools and tricks for integrating social media into your schedule, managing content and refining customer relationships. Hootsuite and Buffer are some of our favourite social media-related resources, for example. 4. Build meaningful relationships with followers Using social media, you can interact directly with followers (and, potential customers). This can be both a blessing and a curse – dealing with complaints in a public forum can be a bit tricky. Your trainer will help you plan for challenging interactions and establish your brand as an authoritative and trustworthy source of information.

5. Make the most out of a free resource Unless you decide to pay for advertising, social media is a free resource. When you consider the benefits it can bring, that fact is almost unbelievable. Invest in training just once and you’ll be able to reap the rewards of an effective social media strategy for years to come. 6. Everyone else is doing it Businesses around the world use social media, and regularly bring in experts to train their staff. Large companies like IBM, Dell, PepsiCo and Adidas were among the first to commence training programmes. The big players in your industry are probably doing the same. Don’t get left behind! Sign up for social media training today to generate more leads and create a loyal, profitable online following. To find out more about social media training, get in touch with our friendly team today.

Renfrewshire Council Updates:

PAISLEY 2021 LATEST UPDATES Paisley’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021 has generated huge support from local businesses over the past year. The town is bidding for the title as part of a wider plan to use Paisley’s unique cultural and heritage story to transform the area’s future. The initial bid was submitted to The UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in April and they have just confirmed that the eleven towns and cities bidding for the title has been reduced to just five; Paisley, Coventry, Stoke, Sunderland and Swansea. These places will now produce a stage two bid for later in the year and the winner will be announced in December. Winning the title will bring massive benefits to business – it is estimated if we win it would create 4,700 jobs and a £172m economic boost to Renfrewshire over the next decade. We would also expect to welcome 800,000 visitors in 2021, creating huge footfall for local traders, while a winning bid would also attract major infrastructure investment. A successful bid will also put the area on the map as a tourist destination, change how people see us at home and abroad, and shine a light on the area’s cultural significance, while also producing huge social benefits – by creating opportunities for people to get involved in culture. But no matter what happens next, the process has already been really positive for Paisley. From the launch of the campaign in late 2015 to the point it was lodged in April more than 30,000 people were involved in the conversation around it – and that momentum will continue. There are also a number of other exciting projects related to Paisley’s culture and heritage which will happen over the next few years no matter what: - cultural infrastructure projects such as the planned revamp of Paisley museum and the new museum store and library will bring new footfall into our high street; - work is under way to reconnect the global symbol that is the Paisley Pattern back to the town and help make us a hub for new business based around fashion, design and creativity;

- Paisley is ideally placed to be one of Scotland’s key destinations for heritage tourism. A new destination brand and focus on our visitor offer to be revealed later this year will help achieve that; - our major events programme already brings 300,000 attendances a year, with highlights including the British Pipe Band Championships, the Halloween Festival and The Spree. That will grow further, with even more events of national importance; Who has supported the bid? Around 200 Renfrewshire businesses – big and small – had pledged their support by the time the bid went in. You can see the full list at paisley2021.co.uk/partners/ business-backers/ The list includes some of Renfrewshire’s biggest employers, including: - Diageo – whose packaging plant at Shieldhall bottles more than 25 million cases of Scotch whisky annually – and who agreed to produce a special limited-edition run of Paisley-2021-branded bottles of Johnnie Walker whisky.

Gavin Brogan Site Director Diageo Shieldhall

- Malcolm Group – one of the country’s top logistics and construction companies – are flying the flag for Paisley around the UK after wrapping the back door of a trailer in Paisley 2021 branding. The Linwood-based firm will celebrate its centenary in 2021.

Andrew Malcom CEO The Malcom Group

- Coats PLC, the world’s leading industrial thread manufacturer. Bosses from the firm - which once employed 10% of Paisley’s population - visited the town earlier this year. Coats still retains a presence in the town today through its global Colour Systems Team, based in the Mile End Mill building. - Glasgow Airport, whose executive Amanda McMillan said: ““Paisley has a vibrant and rich heritage and is known across the globe for its famous Paisley Pattern...the bid can have a transformational effect on Paisley by harnessing a greater sense of civic pride and showcasing it as a destination in its own right.” - intu Braehead – one of Scotland’s largest leisure and entertainment destinations – also got behind Paisley’s ambitions. General manager Gary Turnbull said: “If any place deserves the title, it’s definitely Paisley with its fantastic history and architecture, alongside the myriad cultural activities of its people today and the great cultural future it has in years to come.” It’s easy to get involved – you can write a letter of support, download our Paisley 2021 logo and use it on your material, or download our posters and put them up in your place of work. Renfrewshire Council Updates: Renfrewshire and Paisley: Developing a Tourism Destination Renfrewshire Council’s new tourism officer Andrew McKean talks about plans to develop the area’s visitor economy – and how you can get involved. There is a renewed Andrew McKean focus on tourism within Renfrewshire Council the region. As the new Tourism Officer for Renfrewshire Council, my remit covers tourism business engagement and destination development. I want to work with any business which would benefit from more visitors to Paisley and Renfrewshire – from cafes, restaurants, bars and shops to visitor attractions, hotels and other accommodation providers. created a new collaboration of public, private, cultural, academic and third sector organisations. Many already had working relationships but the bid united them behind a single vision and – crucially - a recognition of the benefits of a holistic destination approach. Although the 2021 process was a catalyst, tourism development will be a priority regardless of the bid outcome. We already host great events which attract thousands of visitors, and we want to build on that. We have great stories to tell and great places to enjoy, so we need to tell those stories louder and better so people can discover that authentic experience. We want more people to visit, both day trippers and those staying overnight. We want them telling their friends, coming back, and staying longer. In short we want more people, spending more. We can do this by acting together as a destination. As well as working with

Renfrewshire Council Updates:

City Deal projects will create new job opportunities

Public engagement helped identify the preferred project locations and businesses are also set to benefit from the Glasgow City Region City Deal projects.

Two Renfrewshire-led Glasgow City Region City Deal projects which will transform Renfrewshire’s business potential have received overwhelming public backing. Extensive engagement on the Glasgow Airport Investment Area and Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside projects has helped shaped the final plans, now being considered by the planning authorities. Feedback from more than 2000 people through surveys, events and exhibitions in Renfrewshire, Glasgow and West Dunbartonshire found fantastic support for both projects, recognising their potential to create jobs and help local businesses expand. Glasgow Airport Investment Area will help to create a world class commercial location in the heart of Renfrewshire,

connected by air, sea and land through realignment of Abbotsinch Road, construction of a bridge over the White Cart and new cycle routes, improving connections between the Westway, Inchinnan and Airport business parks. Regenerating the Clyde Waterfront as an attractive area supporting residential, industrial, business, retail and leisure opportunities is at the heart of the Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project, which proposes construction of a new opening road bridge across the River Clyde, the Renfrew North Development Road and cycle routes to better link the communities of Renfrew, Yoker and Clydebank. Up to 11,000 permanent jobs – including 1400 during the construction period – could be created through existing business expansion and new

businesses being attracted to the area as a result of the City Deal infrastructure investment. Businesses will benefit during the design and construction phases with tendering opportunities to be advertised by early 2018 through Public Contracts Scotland. Improved connections will also benefit the public and local employers, with an estimated 59,000 jobs becoming more accessible to Renfrewshire residents. The Glasgow City Region City Deal comprises more than 20 infrastructure projects across eight local authorities. It is the second largest City Deal in the UK and is expected to unlock £3.3 billion in private sector investment. For more on the business benefits City Deal will bring, visit: www.renfrewshire. gov.uk/citydeal

Renfrewshire Council Updates:

RESILIENCE KEY TO BUSINESS SUCCESS The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties, that’s the dictionary definition of resilience. Resilience is a skill everyone can benefit from, none more so than the business community. Major incidents like the terror attack in Manchester terror attack was a timely reminder of the importance of resilience and readiness. Statistics show 80 per cent of businesses affected by a major incident don’t have continuity plans in place for the benefit of their staff, customers and stakeholders. Emergency planning might seem daunting, but there are simple steps all businesses large and small can take. Renfrewshire Council, through its Civil Contingencies Service, has templates and guidance on creating a business continuity plan.

It covers considerations around aspects such as the security of premises and managing deliveries, while there is also advice on collating a Business Grab Bag of the essentials you might need a short notice. Police Scotland and its emergency service colleagues, through the Scottish Business Resilience Centre (SBRC), has a strong relationship with the business community. Police Scotland and the SBRC deliver nationally accredited counter terrorism training to businesses to help keep our business community safe. Cyber-crime is another key area of focus for the business community. A recent attack caused chaos for NHS systems in Scotland and across the UK, the ransomware attack affecting organisations in 99 countries worldwide.

The SBRC has a comprehensive range of integrated cyber security services to help businesses assess, build and manage their cyber security capabilities, and respond to incidents and crises. Whether it’s online or outside, it is important to be alert and report anything suspicious to Police Scotland by calling 101 for non-emergencies and 999 in an emergency. Any suspicious activity can also be reported to the Anti-Terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321. As the Police report, Action Counters Terrorism and Communities Defeat Terrorism. Kilbarchan Primary School World of Work Week The week beginning the 15th May was an exciting one for the staff, parents and pupils of Kilbarchan Primary School. Over the course of 5 days, the pupils worked with a range of visitors and partners in order to learn more about the world of work and the many opportunities available to them when they left school. At the heart of the programme for the week was a drive to combat traditional gender stereotypes and to promote high aspirations for all. The feedback from both the pupils and the visitors was incredibly positive and we hope we can build on these partnerships in the future.

STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics As part of our on going work on promoting engineering and the world of work one of our teachers, Mrs J Kaney organised a series of visits from parents who are engineers. They visited various classes and spoke to the children about their work. The children were all then set a design challenge for the Scottish Leaders Young Engineers Award. One of our pupils, Grace Clark, Primary 5, won top place in her Year Group across Scotland. There were over 12, 000 entries. Grace will be attending a presentation at The Barony Hall, Strathclyde University

in June. Some of our other pupils were commended for their work. The Scottish Engineering Leaders Award asks Scottish pupils -’’If you were an engineer what would you do?’’ It is part of the wider Primary Engineer Programmes and supported by Scottish Engineering, The University of Strathclyde and the RAF. As an annual, free STEM programme for schools, pupils interview engineers about their work, and then look to solve problems that affect them, their families, Scotland or the world in general. Their creativity is astounding and

inspires engineers at the University of Strathclyde who have annually made one of the winning entries. This year they will be unveiling the ‘Rollover Bench’ designed by a pupil from Craigrothie Primary.

Paisley pupils promote their town through special children’s book Pupils at St Andrew’s Academy in Paisley have been promoting their town’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021 through a special illustrated children’s book. S2 art and design pupils at the school have created a story called Anna’s Adventure, which follows a little girl’s epic journey to spread Christmas cheer across Scotland before completing her mission in her beloved Paisley. The class of 20 pupils took just three months on the school’s InterDisciplinary Lesson project to produce and manufacture their books to a high standard with printers Document Solutions. The tale sees an excited Anna wake up at 6am on Christmas Day - but her joy quickly turns to disappointment when she finds an empty tree in her living room. When she discovers a note from Santa telling her to be “kind and caring” to the people of Scotland, Anna goes on a journey to spread happiness. The adventure sees Anna go hunting for Mary, Queen of Scots’ crown before a trip to the Kelpies and a chance encounter with the Loch Ness Monster. The last stop on her journey takes her back to Paisley; the place where she feels most at home. Paisley is bidding to be UK City of Culture 2021 and the initial bid was lodged with competition organisers, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport,

at the end of April. The bid aims to use the town’s unique heritage and cultural story to transform its future and St Andrew’s Academy art and design teacher, Stephanie Bell, said the pupils were excited to promote Paisley in their story. Stephanie said: “The pupils came up with the ideas for everything and they wanted to do something that would represent them as individuals, their community of Paisley and Scotland in general. They wanted to document it and get their own artwork out there. “They were very excited about the thought that they could associate the book with the Paisley 2021 bid and show that it’s not just practitioners and working people, but it’s also the pupils of Paisley who are representing the art culture. After gaining a fantastic response from fellow pupils and teachers at St Andrew’s Academy, the class now aim to sell their book to the public.

A second class has also produced a story titled Forever Friends and the art and design department are developing other books to showcase the pupils’ talent in the future. Stephanie said: “The kids are hoping to sell the book to as many people as they know and then we are going to see if any primary schools would be interested in it as well, so we can publicise the book as much as possible. “There were 20 pupils involved in the first book, but we have got other classes that are doing other illustrated children’s books which will hopefully be sold at later dates. “It may become an annual thing but we are definitely going to keep promoting Paisley through them!” If you would be interested in buying a copy of the book, contact teacher Stephanie Bell on gw16bellstephanie@ glow.sch.uk or call St Andrew’s Academy on 0141 887 5201.

‘Sky is no limit’ say pupils as experiment headed for outer space A team of secondary school pupils are over the moon after hearing their science experiment will be launched into outer space and carried out by astronauts on the International Space Station. The sky-high feat is their reward for taking part in Mission Discovery Renfrewshire – a week-long space school, hosted by Renfrewshire Council in partnership with University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and run by the International Space School Education Trust (ISSET). The teams were made up for 200 school pupils from Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and East Renfrewshire, mentored by a UWS student alongside a panel of space experts, including former NASA astronaut Steve Swanson, to devise a science experiment that could be conducted in outer space. The winning team’s successful experiment – hailed as the first of its kind - will test if aloe vera can slow down or prevent the spread of candida fungus on the skin of astronauts in space. The pupils who came up with the winning idea are Ashleigh Zimunya, Jamie Stevenson, Daniel MacKinnon, Eve Sutherland, Molly O’Brien, Sophe Adams and Martin McNeil from Renfrewshire, Katie Holland from Inverclyde and Molly Ward from East Renfrewshire. Molly O’Brien, pupil at Gryffe High School and one of the winning team, said: “It was an amazing experience. We are so happy to have won.” Steve Swanson said: “It was fantastic. I was really impressed with the young people and the quality of their presentations. They did a brilliant job.” Mission Discovery gives young people the chance to learn from NASA’s approach to developing leadership, team building and personal development as well as fostering interest in science and research. Renfrewshire Council’s Education Convener, Councillor Jim Paterson, said: “To be chosen as the winning team in this fantastic space school is a magnificent achievement and my congratulations go to all the pupils behind this superb idea. “Mission Discovery Renfrewshire is an amazing programme for all 200 pupils from Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and East Renfrewshire who take part. Meeting an astronaut and a whole panel of space experts is a brilliant opportunity and is sure to inspire young people to pursue their goals and reach their full potential. “This programme is a testament to how working with partners can benefit young people and I would like to thank everyone involved.” Professor Ehsan Mesbahi, UWS Vice Principal & Pro Vice-Chancellor, said: “I would like to congratulate not just the winning team, but all of the pupils who participated in this excellent, inspiring week-long space school at our Paisley Campus. “At UWS we are committed to developing and encouraging the best talent in science, engineering, technology and mathematics and we are delighted to be a key partner of Mission Discovery Renfrewshire.”

DYW Update DYW West, the Scottish Government funded initiative to help establish sustainable links between schools, colleges and employers has recently completed its first full year in operation. Commenting on a busy first year, Programme Director Bob Davidson said “Thanks to everyone that has worked with us since Spring 2016; we recently celebrated our 1st year with an event at West College Scotland where we showcased our work to date and thanked a number of partners and organisations that have engaged with us. In the year ahead we plan to engage with more employers and support more schools and college departments. Getting involved not only helps young people, but can be a great development opportunity for staff and of course supports the local community. We are also rolling out the online tool Marketplace where employers can post opportunities for young people and we are also keen to attract employers to enter teams into the Scottish Apprenticeship Challenge (entry

closes early July).” DYW West invite any chamber members interested in knowing more about how they can work together to get in touch
