President’s Welcome Dear Members Welcome to the winter issue of Business Matters magazine. As my first year as President draws to a close this is a useful opportunity to reflect on some of the key achievements of your Chamber in the last year. Covid has, of course had a huge impact on our communities, none more so than the economic impact. At Rocco 2021 we heard stories of incredible resilience, fortitude, and recovery as businesses made huge contributions to their own communities in response to the pandemic. Sadly, the impact has also hit closer to home. In July, our much-loved Chamber board director, Elaine Sherlock tragically passed away with Covid-19. Everyone who knew Elaine will remember her passion and enthusiasm for Renfrewshire, Ingliston Hotel & Country Club, and the Chamber with much fondness. We’ve lost a great friend. Chamber Membership remains healthy at just under 540 with 63 new members joining in the last 12 months and over 100 organisations becoming new members of the Chamber family since the first lock down, welcome to you all. Since March 2020 we have delivered over 160 events for 4000 people. This year the highlight was undoubtably the return of the Rocco Awards on Friday 19th November with 400 people attending. We have funded and developed our TRANSFORM and Digital December programmes for members on subjects such as Mental Health & Well-Being, Leadership, Strategy Development, Digital Marketing and Green Recovery. Your Chamber has also selffunded our Business Mentoring programme. Our volunteer mentors have supported over 60 companies this year and we appreciate their dedication and time.
We’ve launched a new customs declaration service and recruited 5 new staff to deliver support to our importers and exporters. Annually, Renfrewshire produces over 2 billion pounds of exports – facilitating international trade is crucial to our region. Working with partners has never been more important as we drive our economic recovery. Recent examples include the Kickstart program with Renfrewshire Council and Engage Renfrewshire which has created over 700 work opportunities for our young people. The Chamber now has an enhanced commissioning role in the Local Employer Partnership (LEP) and we proudly promote the Young Persons Guarantee offer to the wider business community. We delivered Business Survey activity with Renfrewshire Council – the largest ever undertaken in Renfrewshire with over 500 responses. I also pass on our thanks to Sandra Black, retiring chief executive of Renfrewshire Council for her support and offer congratulations to Alan Russell, newly appointed in the role. We look forward to continuing our work with Alan and his teams. Sadly, our schools partnership activity has been severely curtailed over the last two years however, plans to offer online opportunities around STEM activity are due to be launched soon and we are looking forward to resuming activity next year. Despite the challenges It is a hugely exciting time for the economy in Renfrewshire. The Council’s AMIDS South project, which includes a 1.7km ‘gateway route’ along the White Cart river, has received almost £40million from the UK Government Levelling Up Fund. Renfrewshire is open for business and is bouncing back from the huge impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. Investment in
infrastructure at this scale highlights how something special is happening here and we look forward to the inclusive growth and boost it brings to our local economy. Construction of the new home for The National Manufacturing Institute Scotland continues at pace near Glasgow Airport and we are incredibly proud to have the facility on our patch. Manufacturing is so important to Renfrewshire and Scotland. However, some parts of the economy are still hugely challenged. Our Aviation sector badly needs the same level of support as seen from European governments to compete effectively and we call on the Scottish and UK Governments to urgently develop a strategy to support the sector. The Chamber looks forward to contributing to an aviation consultation at Holyrood soon. In closing, your Chamber is in good health as we support the drive to economic recovery. Renfrewshire continues to be a great place to “Grow and Prosper.” On behalf of the Chamber board and team, I wish you all a safe Christmas and healthy New Year.
Liz Connolly, President Renfrewshire Chamber

A Warm Welcome from our Chief Executive 2021 has been a year of resilience and recovery for our members and business community. The Chamber recorded a planned £50k deficit for 2020-21 which directly relates to the investment decision by the board to fund our Business Mentoring, Transform and Digital December programs to support members during covid. We look forward to further investment in 2022 to support members and the wider economic recovery in Renfrewshire. We were pleased to return with the ROCCO Awards on Friday 19th Nov which marked a crucial step on the road to normality. The board and team felt it was crucial to run the Rocco’s this year and we witnessed a fantastic response from all our sponsors, companies entering and our guests on the night. 400 people attended with 17 award winners announced. The event raised
£9000 for the Chamber Charity fund. Our self-funded mentoring service continues to gain traction delivered by development exec Stuart Murray and a group of active, knowledgeable, and skilled volunteer mentors. The programme has delivered 60 mentoring matches in the last year with excellent results and case-studies. 15 Rocco 2021 finalists have been supported by the programme recently. If you can support the programme as a volunteer mentor Stuart will be delighted to speak with you. Our 12 days of Digital December series has just concluded with over 300 people booked to attend the sessions. Thanks to Brian Tait, Janine Marriott, Gordon White, Gary Ennis and Colin Kelly for providing such excellent content again this year. To all our members, from myself and all the team at the Chamber have an enjoyable Christmas and best wishes for
the New Year as we continue to support our economic recovery in 2022.

Renfrewshire Connected to Full Fibre Thousands of homes and businesses across Renfrewshire can now benefit CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full fibre platform, has completed work in a number of areas in the region.
Renfrewshire is one of a growing number of locations in the UK to benefit from CityFibre’s £4bn Gigabit City investment programme which will bring new and better broadband infrastructure within reach of up to eight million homes and businesses nationwide. The areas connected include Ferguslie,
Millarston, Paisley town centre, Foxbar, and the Arkelston area of Renfrew. The next areas earmarked for the Renfrewshire rollout in the region include Elderslie, Glenburn, Johnstone and Linwood. Once work on the full fibre network is completed in 2023, almost every home and business locally will have access to full fibre services from a choice of ISPs.
David Cannon, CityFibre’s City Manager for Renfrewshire, said: “We have made excellent progress rolling out our full fibre network across Renfrewshire and I am very pleased to see the first homes beginning to benefit from our infrastructure to access world-leading levels of connectivity.” Unlike copper-based 'fibre broadband' services available today, full fibre networks use 100% fibre optic cables to carry data at lightning speed all the way from the home to the point of connection. This gives users consistently faster speeds for upload and download (up to 1,000 Mbps), near limitless bandwidth so everyone at home can work, study, stream or game simultaneously, while providing connectivity users can depend on.
neighbourhood, internet service providers (ISPs) will ‘light up the network’ with some of the fastest and most competitive broadband packages available in terms of both data and price. In Renfrewshire, services are currently available from BrawBand and TalkTalk, with an increasing range of broadband providers expected to join the network soon. Residents interested in giving their home broadband a boost can find out more about the build, pre-register their interest and find out when new ISPs join at cityfibre.com/renfrewshire
As work is completed in each
Full fibre is coming to Renfrewshire We’re building a new 100% fibre optic network in Renfrewshire that will ready your home for gigabit speed broadband you can rely on. Futureproof your home cityfibre.com/renfrewshire

Enva – passion for the recovery of our customer’s waste materials
Our purpose is to innovate, agitate and do the hard lifting in displacing virgin materials with what is otherwise considered ‘waste’. Today, we are supporting the creation of raw materials from waste in ways that 10 years ago wouldn’t even have been contemplated. We are innovating today to find ways of recovering today’s waste materials that will no longer be considered ‘waste’ in 5 years’ time. This passion for the recovery of waste materials is driven by two of the great challenges of our times: the finite and dwindling natural resources available on this planet and the avoidance of energy and CO2-hungry extraction and manufacturing processes. Resource recovery and adherence to the circular economy are a vital cog in allowing us to live and develop within these constraints; it affects us all either now or in the future, in a fundamental way. For Enva, the recovery of waste materials is not just about landfill diversion. Landfill diversion is important but what is equally important is what really happens to ‘diverted’ waste materials. Using the principles of the Waste Hierarchy, we focus on solutions
that result in reuse and high value recycling of waste materials. Energy recovery has a part to play in displacing hydrocarbon-based fuels and even landfill has a role as a last, safe option while better solutions are being developed. Our role in providing waste materials with second lives means that the resources (oil, wood, metal ores, minerals, water) that would otherwise be consumed can be left alone; the greenhouse gases that are otherwise released in extracting and converting these resources are avoided. The outcomes that we achieve ensure that Enva has a significant net positive impact on greenhouse gas emissions. For every tonne of CO2 equivalent that we generate in our operations, we have identified 8 tonnes of CO2 equivalent that are avoided through the use of our recovered outputs. Enva’s activities are therefore facilitating very significant reductions in carbon emissions through our customers use of our recovered products and we intend to increase this gap over time. Working in partnership with Scottish companies from a variety of sectors including retail, manufacturing, construction, hospitality and education,
Enva helps to manage waste and resources more efficiently, effectively and sustainably. This enables our customers to reduce their carbon footprint and maximise recycling rates whilst managing the materials in line with the ‘Waste Hierarchy’. With 33 sites in the UK and Ireland, including 8 facilities in Scotland, Enva manages a broad range of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials, producing high quality secondary resources and products for re-use in manufacturing and the generation of sustainable energy. The company’s flagship materials recycling facility at Linwood, recycles over 90% of the material it processes. Any material that cannot be recycled is used by the company in the manufacture of refuse derived fuels which provide sustainable alternatives to rapidly depleting fossil fuels and helps customers to achieve zero waste to landfill. Our ability to provide fully integrated general and hazardous waste services provides a one-stop shop waste management solution for more than 3000 businesses in Scotland. Why you should consider it When it comes to Paid Search Ads, Google is not the only option available to you. Yes, it may be the largest in terms of traffic volume, but that also makes it more competitive. Did you know, in the UK, the Microsoft Search Network has a 20.5% share of the UK Desktop market, with an average of 478 million monthly desktop searches? Using Microsoft Advertising alongside your current digital marketing efforts could give you access to new audiences who may not have heard of your business before. Here are just some of the reasons to consider it within your digital marketing mix: • Target Multiple Search Engines The Microsoft Search Network doesn’t just make use of the Bing search engine. It encompasses multiple search engines at once, giving you
access to a variety of different users. It’s network covers Bing, Yahoo, AOL and more. • Reduced competition for bidding While the Microsoft Search Network is smaller than Google in terms of volume, this can actually work to your advantage. With fewer businesses using Microsoft Ads, there’s significantly less competition for ad space. • Import Google Ads Campaigns Already using Google Ads? Microsoft Ads offers a painless process from importing existing campaigns over to its network ! Once imported you can tweak and tailor your campaigns as you please, or switch them on right away. • Better Return on Investment
The Microsoft Search Audience is known to be a little older and more affluent. In the UK, 32% of Microsoft Searchers have household income in the top 25%. This can result in greater search intent and higher conversion rates compared to Google. Our experience in recent years has shown that Microsoft Advertising is a channel worth considering. While Google may hold the cards when it comes to volume of traffic and volume of leads, we’ve numerous examples where clients have experienced lower Cost Per Click, higher Click Through Rates, higher Engagement rates and, more importantly, higher Conversion Rates when testing ads on Microsoft. Head over to Microsoft Ads now to test it yourself, or get in touch with us to chat some more!

MOVING ON IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS Moving on in the family business … to an affordable and financially secure retirement, future prosperity and opportunity for the business and the next generation. These and other distinct needs and motivations of family business owners greatly affect exit & succession options, plans and outcomes. Understanding these needs & motivations, and their impact, reveals why exiting the business can be difficult, seems forever postponed, or sadly becomes a problem legacy instead of an inheritance of potential. The gap in this understanding is often filled with presumptions like … “they won’t want to take it on, they are not up to it, we can’t fund retirement and succession, they’ll never retire, they’ll never give up control, we can’t bring the right skills, it will lead to conflict, our options are limited”. Moving on in the family business …from confusion to clarity on such key points can lead to shared vision and purpose. As a neutral party, our key role is opening up difficult conversations, considering the options for ownership and management, and facilitating joined up professional advice. In our upcoming event ‘Moving on in the Family Business’, my colleague Mark Bradford will share his experience and expertise on this vital subject. Mark will be looking at motivations & obstacles in succession, exit options, the objectives and timing of exit, and where it is important to combine family need with business need. The event, in conjunction with Renfrewshire Chamber and RBS, is on Tuesday 9th November. Glasgow Airport welcomes First Minister to Boeing Innovation Forum - Two-day event hosted by airport and Boeing to promote innovation and sustainability within industry Glasgow Airport welcomed First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to the Boeing Innovation Forum on Wednesday 6 October. The two-day event was co-hosted by Glasgow Airport and Boeing and brought together partners in Scotland and the broader aviation sector to demonstrate the role today’s sustainable technologies can play in the future of aviation and prepare the industry for a more sustainable future. The centerpiece of the two-day forum was a visit by Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator aircraft. Since 2012, the ecoDemonstrator aircraft programme has accelerated innovation by testing nearly 200 promising technologies to address challenges for airlines, passengers and the environment. Derek Provan, Chief Executive of AGS Airports Ltd, which owns and operates Glasgow Airport, said: “We are proud to host the innovation forum in partnership with Boeing and it was a pleasure to welcome the First Minster to Glasgow Airport today. “This two-day event is about recognising the huge progress the aviation and aerospace sectors have made as we work towards decarbonising what is truly one of the most global industries and looking ahead to what else we can achieve through innovation and partnerships on our collective journey to net zero.” This year’s plane was a new 737-9 from Alaska Airlines. Among the technologies being tested were an engine nacelle designed to reduce noise and cabin sidewalls made from recycled material. Boeing partnered with ADS, British Airways, Glasgow Airport, Loganair, Menzies Aviation, Scottish Development International, Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise on the forum, and dozens more were represented in the supplier showcase and through panel discussions. The Boeing Innovation Forum is under the umbrella of the Boeing Scotland Alliance, which was launched in 2020 with Scottish Enterprise. It is designed to explore opportunities to work together in Scotland, with the aim of doubling Boeing’s supply chain and creating 200 new quality jobs in five years. On Tuesday, Boeing and the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland opened a new £11.8 million R&D programme next to
Glasgow Airport that will explore novel manufacturing technologies for metallic components. “When we signed the Boeing Scotland Alliance almost two years ago we wanted to work in many locations and sectors, to combine the best of what Boeing can offer with the world-class supply chain, startups, universities and research centres in Scotland,” said Sir Martin Donnelly, president of Boeing Europe and managing director of Boeing in the UK and Ireland. “This week’s events are a showcase of what we’ve done collectively already, and also what is possible in Scotland and the wider UK when industry, government and academia work collaboratively to create a more sustainable future.” During her speech to over 300 delegates from across the aviation and aerospace sectors, the First Minister announced that Glasgow Science Centre will become home to the United Kingdom’s first Newton Flight Academy, a permanent classroom used to teach students aviation-related STEM concepts that will include three full-motion flight simulators. The academy is made possible through funding from Boeing and is being developed in partnership with First Scandinavia. In 2018, Boeing invested more than £3.5 million to setup a network of STEM-focused “Newton Rooms” around Europe. This will be the first full academy outside of Norway when it opens in spring of 2022. The state-of-the-art space will be
used to deliver immersive, experiential learning programmes that will enable students to engage in real-world challenges by working together with industry professionals, and will include the experience of flying in state-of-theart flight simulators. The programmes will cover themes including space, biofuels, and advanced materials and manufacturing. These will be delivered in partnership with the University of Strathclyde. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “Delegates from around the world will start to arrive in Glasgow for COP26 in a matter of weeks. The summit is the world’s best chance – and possibly one of our last chances – to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. We need to find ways to decarbonise air travel if we are to achieve that goal while rebuilding connectivity, and that needs international collaboration between governments and industry. “Only by maximising the opportunities in front of us - research and development; inspiring young people to consider STEM careers in Scotland and further afield; and testing out sustainable technologies - can we endeavour to leave a planet that future generations can be proud of. “Every step is an investment in our young people’s future, and innovations like Boeing’s Glasgow Newton Flight Academy enable young people to join us on this crucial journey and discover the fascinating learning and career opportunities a net zero society creates.”

Pangiam and Google Cloud Collaborate to Transform Aviation Security AGS Airports Ltd to trial new artificial intelligence-led technology at security sites in Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton airports Pangiam, in collaboration with Google Cloud, announced details of Project DARTMOUTH, an initiative to transform airport security operations by looking for threats concealed within baggage and other shipments at the airport. Project DARTMOUTH will utilise Pangiam’s technologies alongside Google Cloud's artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) computer vision tools, such as their Vertex AI Platform. This technology will be tested within the security facilities of AGS Airport Ltd, owners and operators of Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton Airports in the UK. The collaboration means that Pangiam's national security-grade technology and deep experience of managing aviation security threats will, for the first time, be boosted by Google Cloud’s industryleading suite of AI technologies. Project DARTMOUTH is intended to make air travel safer by integrating AI into airport baggage security and screening operations. The technology will in the first instance be focused on rapidly identifying potential threats in baggage, providing increased throughput at security checkpoints, addressing critical friction points in air travel as well as supporting security teams. In later phases the technology will scale to help tackle other pressure points in security and wider airport operations. AI and ML models will be trained to be able to detect prohibited items in realtime as bags pass through airport X-ray scanning equipment. It will also be used to spot anomalies and unusual patterns which could indicate a new or coordinated attempt to breach security, before alerting security staff to examine those items further. Alexis Long, Chief Strategy Officer for Pangiam said: “This technology marks a monumental step in bringing automation to aviation security and
Mark Johnston, Chief Operating Officer AGS Aiports Ltd
sets a new precedent for international security standards. First and foremost, the technology will deliver a better experience for the traveller, the airport, and governments. To help us achieve this, we have selected Google Cloud as our technology vendor of choice—a leader in artificial intelligence and cloud technologies.” Mark Palmer, Head of EMEA Public Sector, Google Cloud said, “We are delighted to collaborate with Pangiam on this ground-breaking initiative to protect AGS’s network of passengers and customers. The power of artificial intelligence is boundless, and we look forward to improving the aviation industry at large.” Commenting on the announcement, Chief Operating Officer of AGS Airports Ltd, Mark Johnston, said: “Google Cloud and Pangiam are world leaders in the artificial intelligence field, and we are pleased to be working in partnership with both organisations on a cutting-edge
project that could have a transformative effect on the security of our passengers and colleagues. “Aviation is an industry that never stands still, and as one of the UK’s biggest airport groups, we are continually looking at new ways to adapt and evolve. This is particularly the case when it comes to ensuring the safety and security of the millions of passengers we serve each year. We live in an ever-changing world with evolving threats and it is imperative that we continue to adapt and embrace new technologies that will enable frontline security teams to better deliver a seamless, safe, and secure customer experience.” Project DARTMOUTH, named after the 1956 Dartmouth Summer Research Project on AI, widely considered to be the founding event of AI, has been in development for almost a year but was only announced publicly today. Project DARTMOUTH will enhance the screening of baggage and shipments and does not involve facial recognition technology.

Scotland Loves Local Awards Paisley town centre has scooped the award for Creative Town at the recent Scotland Loves Local Awards. Organised by Scotland’s Towns Partnership, the awards celebrated the remarkable dedication and innovation which makes life in our communities better, stronger and more sustainable. With the ceremony itself hosted by Paisley’s own Sean Batty, Paisley won the award for its entry which showcased the town’s mural trail. They say a picture speaks a thousand words and the mural trail around Paisley town centre beautifully captures the story of Paisley past, present and future. The Murals project was devised by Paisley First, the town centre’s Business Improvement District, to help breathe new life into the town centre. Using only local artists and working with some of the town’s community groups, the murals are a great talking point for the people of Paisley and visitors to the town. Partly funded by Renfrewshire Council’s CHEF Fund, the remainder of the project was paid for by town centre businesses who all contribute to the BID by way of a financial levy. The first in the series was the Kingfisher mural by Mark Worst on Johnston Street. This work highlights one of the town’s relatively unknown sons, Alexander Wilson, as well as one of the town’s iconic buildings and local wildlife.
The kingfisher represents the life and work of Alexander Wilson, who is credited with establishing ornithology as a science. Originally a weaver poet, Alexander Wilson moved to America where he studied wildlife and travelled widely, documenting and drawing hundreds of illustrations of birds on his way. Up next in 2017, then seven-year-old Eva Rose Ross from Paisley won the competition to be commemorated on the gable wall next to Allan’s Snack Bar on Storie Street, a popular fish and chip shop in the town. Along with co-artist Alexander Guy, local artist Caroline Gormley braved sunshine and snow to complete the work to complete the “Buddie” artwork which she hoped would encourages young people to be curious and to engage with their rich heritage. For the next mural in the town’s Lawn Street, Made in the Mill worked with Paisley based artist Duncan Wilson to create a design concept which raises awareness of mental health. The group, an artists’ collective based in Mile End Mill Paisley and supported by the NHS, works with artists who use art and creativity as part of their recovery. And the landmark Slug in the Bottle case features on Reborn on Lady Lane, which was created by another local artist, Kevin Cantwell.
There are also two murals at Paisley Gilmour Street train station – Wish You Were Here – a postcard from yesteryear celebrating iconic people, places and historic moments from the town’s past, and a tourist map with a twist. Chair of Paisley First, Colette Cardosi, said: “There are more listed buildings in Paisley than anywhere else in Scotland outside of Edinburgh so it was great to be able to shine a spotlight on some of these buildings and celebrate these artworks.” “Paisley has long been heralded as a creative town, culturally rich in talent, especially when it comes to music and art. “We were thrilled that Paisley has officially been recognised as a Creative Town as part of the Scotland Loves Local Awards and wish to congratulate all nominees and winners who work so hard to put our local communities at the heart of everything we do.” The Paisley First Murals project has also inspired a number of other murals to pop up in and around the town. Artwork on the side of Japan Street Food on Renfrew Road was a welcome new addition to the town, celebrating the extension of this popular Paisley business into larger premises. Several other additions are courtesy of local artist Shaun Deveney known as Art by Dev, one of which celebrates local man James Goodfellow, the creator of the chip and pin, on Rowan Street. The mural trail can be found on the Paisley First website at www.paisleyfirst. com and trail leaflets are also available from the Paisley First leaflet racks in both the Piazza and the Paisley shopping centres. Love Local, Love Paisley!

Young Crohn’s Disease Sufferer Helps Local Sick Children Crohn’s Disease is a debilitating lifelong illness for which there is no cure. Diagnosed with the condition at the age of 13 meant that Cameron Campbell knew the struggles of the condition from early on in life. During Cameron’s life, it has left him house-bound and ostracised from friends and relatives as a result of always needing to be near a toilet. Consequently, Cameron has a deep rooted understanding of the difficulties faced by Bowel/Bladder condition sufferers due to toilet uncleanliness outside the home. The result? Cameron launched My Hygiene Kit (MHK), a local Social Enterprise selling on-the-go toilet hygiene products to the mass market. When consumers purchase products from MHK, the business donates hygiene products to young disadvantaged sufferers of Bowel/Bladder conditions whose lives are blighted by Hygiene Poverty. The Arnold Clark Innovation Centre looks to the future of driving While cars may have been around for more than a century, they have constantly evolved to improve both efficiency and safety. But, a quiet revolution is coming. While there are electric cars dating back to the late 19th century, it is the conventional internal combustion engine that became the default throughout the 20th century. However, with new regulations aimed at lowering emission standards and with 2030 as the deadline to stop selling new cars with conventional engines, everything is about to change. And Arnold Clark are aiming to educate the public, and their employees, about the benefits of electrification with their new Innovation Centre on Dumbarton Road in Glasgow. Discover a range of hybrid and electric vehicles After some pandemic-related delays, the Arnold Clark Innovation Centre has opened its doors to the public by appointment only. The centre hosts a range of electric and hybrid cars as well as information about the costs and sustainability of owning alternatively fuelled vehicles to help educate both business and members of the public understand the benefits of electrification. While there are many cars on site, this isn’t just another showroom. Arnold Clark aims to educate both private customers and businesses about the benefits of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) and why they are becoming so important, as well
as highlighting the different types of AFVs currently available. For Arnold Clark employees, it’s an opportunity to learn about advancing technology with training available on-site. The importance of education While currently just 1% of the population drive electric vehicles, Arnold Clark is expecting this figure to rise rapidly over the coming years. Arnold Clark Chief Executive and Group Managing Director, Eddie Hawthorne, explains: ‘There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about EVs. And this is
something we as an industry need to educate our customers about, which is what we’re trying to do. ‘We’ve invested well over £5 million in our Innovation Centre in Glasgow. It’s not a site we are selling anything from. It’s specifically an innovation, information and educational centre. The centre displays alternative fuel vehicles from all the manufacturers we represent, plus some we don’t. We currently have 60 vehicles on-site. These include fully electric, plug-in hybrids, hybrids, and commercial vehicles that are also alternatively fuelled.
Helping Renfrewshire Grow & Prosper
Working with a range of partners While the centre is owned and operated at Arnold Clark, the automotive company is working with the support of a number of organisations to make sure visitors can get all the facts about clean power and AFVs. These include Transport Scotland, OLEV, Scottish Power, Energy Saving Trust, Go Ultra Low, Strathclyde University and The NVT Group who can all provide insights into about how new technology is shaping the way we drive.
17
Eddie Hawthorne continues: ‘We ask the right questions. “What’s right for you? What do you need? What’s the best vehicle and package that works for you?” And then obviously we want to talk to them about charging, infrastructure, where they’ll charge it, and that’s why we’re partnering with other people. What we’re trying to do at the Innovation Centre is just showcase everything that’s out there, and it’s not just about electric vehicles.’
Get expert advice to start your journey As well as two managers, there will be five dedicated Innovation Centre product geniuses working at the centre – who will specialise in alternative fuel vehicles – to answer all questions about the vehicles on site, as well as a business specialist to advise the next steps for organisations looking to electrify their fleets. Thanks to the lifting of restrictions, visitors will be able to take a solo test-drive a vehicle of their choice with a huge range on-site, including the Volkswagen ID.4, Mercedes EQC MINI Electric, Hyundai Kona, Kia e-Niro, BMW X2, and BMW i3, perfect for a range of driving needs. Address ESG or lose funding, warns SME expert An SME expert with Top 10 accountancy firm Azets is urging businesses to embrace and implement Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policies or risk losing their sources of funding. Donald Boyd, Head of Growth at Azets, says climate change and ESG is already starting to have a significant impact on funding decisions and directors that focus on the short-term could be putting the future of their businesses at risk. He warns that lenders, suppliers, customers, and employees will increasingly demand a roadmap to a net zero strategy and failure to address ESG policies could affect a business’ viability. The warning follows a poll by Azets of 235 SME business leaders which revealed that just 10% of businesses say climate change and ESG will affect their business model with their attention focused on more immediate issues such as staffing (34%), economic recovery (27%), digitisation and technology (19%). Almost a quarter of SMEs have not reviewed their business model in over a year.
Donald Boyd said: “In the midst of a global pandemic, a quarter of businesses having not reviewed their business model is an alarming figure. We would expect more frequent forecasting to make sure businesses are adapting to change, particularly as the real impact of Brexit and Covid-19 may not yet have been felt, and with the growing awareness and importance of sustainability. “A sharper focus on the short-term is perhaps to be expected as SMEs focus on immediate recovery and growth, with on-going concerns over staffing levels, economic instability, and digitisation an ever-present issue. However, with funding likely to be harder to come by and banks increasingly looking at sustainability and ESG policies as a condition of lending, businesses must be thinking ahead.” Donald Boyd is urging businesses to take more of a proactive approach to ESG as part of regular business model reviews. Donald Boyd concluded: “ESG will keep growing in significance and will impact decision making by lenders, suppliers,
Donald Boyd, Head of Growth
customers, and employees. We urge SME businesses to seek professional advice to ensure they are tackling short-term challenges and planning appropriately for long-term ESG requirements.”

12 Days of Digital December Our 12 Days of Digital December returned for a second year and attracted considerable interest from the Renfrewshire business community, with approximately 300 bookings across the series. The daily online events were delivered by some of the most knowledgeable digital experts around and were designed to help businesses adapt to the changing environment post-COVID. On Day 8, Gary from NSDesign demonstrated what ‘great social service’ looks like in today’s connected world, looking at examples from a variety of companies.
On Day 1, Gary Ennis from NSDesign looked at how the digital customer has changed, how to ensure your website is on their radar, and how to embrace social media and online platforms to stand out and thrive. Gordon White from fatBuzz delivered Day 2’s session which looked at how the need to utilise online networking, lead generation and business development tools has never been greater, focusing on LinkedIn. The next session saw Gordon from fatBuzz return to explore what you need to do to optimise your LinkedIn Business Page and how to tap into the power of LinkedIn Groups and LinkedIn Advertising. On Day 5, Janine Marriott SEO presented 30 uncomplicated, effective steps that you can do yourself for free to help strengthen your digital presence in the current environment.
On Day 6, Gary from NSDesign provided an understanding of digital competitor analysis. This looked at why and how to use one, utilising a range of free tools to help you understand and compare your business with your competitors. Day 7 was delivered by former Clyde 1 radio presenter Colin Kelly from Comsteria and covered podcasting, which has been a huge growth area in 2021. The session looked at what a podcast could do for your business and how to get started.
Gordon from fatBuzz returned for a final session on Day 9 looking at ‘putting your content to work’. This considered the aims and objectives of your content, its type and tone, identifying your target audience(s) and maximising the reach of your content. On Day 10, Gary from NSDesign delivered ‘Anti-Social Media’ which looked at where social media can go wrong in business. Through real world examples, we saw the devastating outcomes and discussed ways to mitigate the risks of it happening to you. On Day 11, Janine Marriott returned with a look ahead at how businesses can best utilise SEO in 2022. Brian Tait from Aillum concluded the series on Day 12 with a session on Analytics featuring some of the tools and data that can help you start monitoring, refining and improving your digital marketing activities.

5 social media marketing mistakes to avoid When done right, social media has massive potential to build brand awareness, establish a community around your business, and expand your client base. However, it’s not an easy nut to crack and there’s just as much potential to get things wrong along the way! In this article, we look at five common social media marketing mistakes to avoid.
5 social media marketing mistakes to avoid Every man and his dog (or cat) is on social media and, with worldwide social media users up 521 million in the last year, it’s a critical area that businesses shouldn’t overlook! However, the sheer number of businesses on social media also means that you need to stand out to get your customer’s attention! In saying that, you don’t want to stand out for the wrong reasons, so let’s take a look at some social media marketing mistakes so you know what to avoid. 1) Working without a plan Posting to social media sporadically about any old topic without working to a wider plan is unlikely to bring success! You first need to understand your goals, your target audience, your tone of voice, and what your content will look like (i.e. topics and format). Nail down these basics before you go any further, as they will be the foundation for everything that follows! 2) Not understanding (or targeting) your target audience The last thing you want to do is simplify your audience to the point that it’s everyone! You may have heard me say this on a webinar already – “Stop talking to the world. The world doesn’t care.” The beauty of social media is that it allows you to connect and engage directly with your audience. Posts for audiences that are too wide or generic aren’t likely to receive
Gary Ennis, Founder and Managing Director of NSDesign Ltd
much engagement or interest. So, define your ideal customer persona(s) first, narrow it down to the people that might actually care, then tailor your content accordingly! 3) Not engaging with your followers/ customers If someone comments on a post or asks a question, make sure you reply! The quicker you respond, the more your customers will engage. This is one of the most important ways to create a community around your business and if you stay silent your audience will think you’re uninterested! 4) Too much promotional content This is a common (and understandable) mistake made by many businesses. Whilst it’s natural to want to promote your products and services, if you do too much of this your followers will lose interest! Instead, try to post content that’s of value to your audience and remember
that the majority of your posts – around 80% as a rule of thumb – should be nonpromotional! 5) Jumping from tactic to tactic Another problem we see is businesses jumping from tactic to tactic, without giving an approach enough time to fairly evaluate it. Give a tactic long enough to gather momentum, and be sure to track your progress! Whilst there will always be some tweaking and testing for best results, if you’re constantly switching you’ll never get a handle (or sufficient data) on what works and what doesn’t. Whether you’re a seasoned social media marketer or a beginner, it can be useful to take a step back to look at what you’re doing to avoid these common mistakes! Your followers will thank you for it, and you’ll see better results. For more help and advice with your social media strategy talk to our team, read our new book, or sign up to a training course!

Elaine Sherlock - A Tribute In July, the Chamber’s much-loved board director, Elaine Sherlock tragically passed away with Covid-19. Elaine, 57, had a hereditary kidney disease and started dialysis in 2010. She received a kidney as part of the paired donation scheme in 2011, and lived a full and active life up until her death this year. Over the past decade, Elaine has been a huge fundraiser for Kidney Research UK, raising large sums of money and increasing awareness. This year we are supporting Kidney Research UK as one of our chosen charities in Elaine’s honour. We will remember her passion and enthusiasm for Renfrewshire, Ingliston Hotel & Country Club, and the Chamber with much fondness. Elaine’s brother Jim Hayton said, “First and foremost, Elaine was a huge supporter of Kidney Research UK because she’d benefitted so much from her kidney transplant. After she died, people told me how she’d helped them with their own fundraising. I knew she’d done the Kiltwalks and taken part in other charity events, but even I was surprised when I
found out how much else she had been doing. Her daughter Lauren recently set up a fundraising page and it’s raised thousands in a matter of weeks. We’ll all try to keep Elaine’s wonderful tradition going in her memory”
If you would like to leave a tribute in memory of Elaine, visit her Much Loved page where you can make a donation or leave a message. Renfrewshire Chamber will continue to support her charity work which she held so close to her heart.
BOARD MEMBER AND CHAIR OF FINANCE GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE - HOSPICE
Unpaid, but with reimbursement of reasonable expenses. St Vincent’s hospice is the “little hospice with a big heart”, serving patients with life-shortening conditions, and their families, in Renfrewshire and North Ayrshire. We are rated “Good” across all of our inspection areas by Healthcare Improvement Scotland and we have ambitious plans for both future service development and income generation. We are looking for a new Board member who shares our ambitions, who will additionally chair our Finance Governance Committee.
The time commitment for this role is attendance at quarterly Board meetings, which are held in the early evening, and the leadership of four meetings of the Finance Governance Committee in-between. Input will also be required to prepare for committees with our Management Accountant and Chief Executive, and to read papers in advance of meetings. We are looking for someone who is a qualified accountant and is comfortable working with committees and/or boards. People skills are essential, as is an
empathy and enthusiasm for the work we do – providing high quality palliative care and support from diagnosis of a life-limiting condition to end-of-life care to all who could benefit from it. It is not essential that you live within Renfrewshire or North Ayrshire, but a connection with the area is always welcome. For an informal discussion with our Board Chair or our CEO, please contact our Governance Lead, Georgina McGhie, who can set this up for you. Georgina. McGhie@SVH.co.uk

Stuart Murray, Development Executive
Nick Tracey heads up One Branded: Experts in sourcing and supplying quality promotional products, sustainable branded merchandise and print materials to business of all sizes, including brands, agencies, public & corporate organisations and charities. Nick joined the programme in late 2020 and has been working with mentor Phil Eldridge. What was your motivation to join the Business Mentoring Programme? The main reason I joined the BMP was to gain practical advice and guidance from a fully qualified business professional, to discuss and highlight areas on where we could improve our business processes, identify goals and to implement a strategy which in turn would help steer us out of the pandemic and into the longer term as a much stronger, more profitable business. What are the key benefits that participation has delivered for you? The most valuable takeaway from the mentorship programme to date has been the training and support linked around financial reporting, forecasting and cashflow. This is a critical part of running a business which is overlooked by so many smaller companies – including ourselves up until recently. The input and guidance from Phil and the BMP to date has given me the confidence and knowledge to make smarter business decisions and implement more meaningful strategies. Phil Eldridge is Managing Director of Secure Business Advisors who provide high impact expert help to businesses, SMEs and large multi-site organisations. Phil’s expertise is in helping businesses maximise performance leading to maximum results for the business by analysing root causes of issues and implementing tailor made solutions. What were the key objectives you identified and set to focus on with Nick? Nick was highly experienced in his industry sector but was relatively new to managing his own business. The first objective was to provide best practice running a business entity, where and what to focus on and how to oversee, measure, and control the key elements of the business. Secondly, Nick had confidence in the strategy and go to market techniques they had already developed for the first year of trading. Therefore, the objective here was to assist in the deployment of the strategy and these techniques, working with Nick in adapting and adjusting them to meet the particularly challenging trading environment all businesses are tackling currently. What are the benefits of joining the RCC Business Mentoring Programme for businesses? There is a vast pool of knowledge and experience across all the BMP mentors. The ability to draw from this resource is such a great opportunity. It provides huge benefits for a relatively small invest of time. If you view this in terms of a return on investment (ROI) then it is one of the best ROI that a business owner will obtain.

Derek Porter is a qualified Chartered Accountant and has a wide range of business experiences having spent time in light engineering before building one of the largest multi-disciplinary consulting engineering consultancies in the UK. Derek was also Finance Director of a Scottish Premier League club and has held senior positions and directorships across various industries. What was your motivation to join the Renfrewshire Chamber Business Mentoring Programme as a mentor? I decided to see if I could offer my experience and expertise to a small number of businesses, who might not be able to afford consultancy expertise, through a mentoring facility and approached Renfrewshire Chamber to see if they might facilitate that. What are the key benefits that participation delivers for participants? In my opinion, the key benefits which such a facility offers participants are, from a mentor perspective, an opportunity to assist businesses to fulfil their potential, to see business owners grow in confidence and experience and to gain satisfaction from continuing to contribute to the economy in a small way. From a mentee’s perspective it opens their horizons to the experience offered by the mentors, a sounding board for their own ideas and a check and balance on cash critical elements before decisions are made and implemented. On setting out with Xander we identified key aspects in order to develop the business from its, then, current position. These were staffing, space requirements, market and client development and personal development, in a management and business sense. Yellow Slate Design provide a complete, end to end branding service and everything in between, from logo design and initial research through to marketing campaigns and social media strategy. Business owner, Xander Campbell, is passionate about providing ideas in the real world providing practical solutions. What is your aspiration for the business and has Business Mentoring helped you in reaching this? I was looking to build my business to a sustainable level to be able to handle growing and take on any challenges. It has helped me in practical sense from contacts to logistics, more importantly taking that time out the business you benefit from the outside point of view. Sometimes its small parts of the conversation that clicks and makes sense. Why would you recommend the programme to other individuals in Renfrewshire? I would recommend Business Mentoring as it’s a good opportunity to discuss your plan for your business with someone who knows what they are talking about. You also know they are doing this to genuinely help you and your business.
Gary Clark is Estate Manager at Ingliston Country Club & Hotel an award-winning equestrian, conference and wedding venue with boutique hotel, luxury lodges and restaurant. What was your motivation to join the Business Mentoring Programme? The Business Mentoring Programme has helped me identify and achieve my career goals at Ingliston. Mark has helped me develop and maintain a broader perspective on career options and opportunities. Would you recommend the Programme to other individuals in Renfrewshire? I would absolutely recommend the Programme to anyone in business looking to increase their full potential. Mark Bradford’s career started in the bakery industry in 1982 and from there he gained experience in retail management, production management and eventually business management. Putting this wide variety of business experience to a different use, in 2013 Mark started a Coaching & Consulting business. Having previously mentored teenage school children, a chance encounter in 2010 led Mark to start business mentoring and has mentored over 30 different business managers or owners since then. What was your motivation to join the BMP as a mentor? I had always wanted to give back to business owners. One of the main drivers for me was being told on the odd occasion when I had made a mistake in business “if only you had asked, I would have let you know not to do that”. Well, I didn’t know what I didn’t know, so didn’t know what to ask! I wanted to make sure that mentees don’t make the same mistakes I did. I am sure all the main mistakes in business have already been invented so no point in having others in the business community learn from their mistakes. Why would you recommend the BMP to other individuals in Renfrewshire? What a great way to learn more about business, from someone who has already done it and got the experience. Thinking about mentoring? - well I would encourage you to do it. I was told that you don’t truly know something until you can teach someone else! Where mentoring is concerned you must stop and think about what you know from your experience, not taught from a book and that is what the mentees need. It has helped me focus on my strengths, so it is not only the mentee that benefits you as the mentor benefits as well by giving back. Renfrewshire Council Updates:
Renfrewshire transport links project secures significant funding A transport project improving links between Paisley town centre and Scotland’s manufacturing innovation district AMIDS has secured almost £40million in Levelling Up Funding. Renfrewshire Council’s AMIDS South project, which includes a 1.7km ‘gateway route’ along the White Cart river, has received £38.7million from the UK Government Levelling Up Fund. That is the third highest award of all the UK-wide projects being supported in the first round of the fund confirmed by the Chancellor during his UK budget announcement on Wednesday (27 October). This will provide around 90% of the funding for the project to develop a network of road, cycling and walking links from the town centre train station and bus interchange to Glasgow Airport, AMIDS and onto Inchinnan. It will also strengthen the links to the significant investment well underway in Paisley town centre cultural venues, which includes a £42million transformation of Paisley Museum and the £22million refurbishment of the town’s A-listed Town Hall, as well as a new learning and cultural hub on the High Street. Economic projections found the project could bolster the local economy by an additional £136million and cut carbon emissions by 21,700 tonnes while help existing and new companies to grow, creating new job opportunities for years to come. The gateway route from Paisley town centre along Abercorn Street, Harbour Road and Inchinnan Road to Glasgow Airport and the manufacturing district AMIDS includes new cycle routes and landscaping as well as a bridge crossing at Paisley Harbour for pedestrians, cyclists and road traffic. Also included in the brief is an east-west road link from Renfrew Road joining onto the new route, increasing connectivity to the manufacturing district and improving accessibility to the proposed new Paisley Grammar community campus, West College Scotland and Gallowhill area as well as the new Scottish Leather Group factory and many other businesses in the Abercorn area. And traffic calming works on Love

Street will improve the environment for local residents and pedestrians, the area benefiting from a reduction in traffic flow due to the new routes. Funding will also enable improved walking and cycling on Greenock Road between Inchinnan Business Park and AMIDS. Renfrewshire Council Leader Iain Nicolson said: “Development of Scotland’s manufacturing innovation district AMIDS is a huge coup for Renfrewshire, attracting many new jobs and opportunities and it’s vital that we ensure the infrastructure is in place which enables residents in the surrounding areas to be able to access these jobs. “This project does just that, better connecting communities to education and employment, enabling economic growth, helping to cut congestion and supporting our commitment for Renfrewshire to be carbon neutral by 2030. “Clearly, our bid to the Levelling Up fund put forward a compelling case, backed by business, enterprise and education leaders from across Renfrewshire and I’m pleased that we can now progress it and ensure it delivers for our communities.” Levelling Up fund bids required the support of the constituency MP for the area, and Gavin Newlands MP, said: “This additional funding for the AMIDS South project is welcome and having supported this bid I am now keen to see this project delivered as soon as possible. “The vision shown by Renfrewshire Council and Scottish Enterprise in developing AMIDS is reaping real rewards
for Paisley and Renfrewshire and boosting our local economy through the kind of high-skill, high-value jobs that will drive innovation for the future. “Combined with the transformational increase in active travel spend recently announced by the Scottish Government, it’s clear Renfrewshire is playing its part in the transition to a net zero society – a world-leading objective in the run up to COP 26 in Glasgow.” The Council’s bid included letters of support from local businesses, with the infrastructure complementing other works being progressed including an active travel route between Paisley and Renfrew and the Glasgow City Region City Deal funded project building an opening road bridge over the River Clyde at Renfrew. Bob Grant, Chief Executive of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Renfrewshire is open for business and is bouncing back from the huge impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. Investment in infrastructure at this scale highlights how something special is happening here and we look forward to the inclusive growth and boost it brings to our local economy.” Liz Connolly, Principal and Chief Executive of West College Scotland, said: “We are working on plans to develop our Paisley campus and these new transport links will bring great benefits to our students and to the local community accessing our facilities. Having the advanced manufacturing district nearby offers fantastic opportunities for our young people to develop their skills here and it’s pleasing that everyone will have greater choice to walk and cycle to their studies.”

Alan Russell appointed as New Chief Executive at Renfrewshire Council Renfrewshire Council’s Director of Finance and Resources, Alan Russell, has been appointed as the council’s new Chief Executive and has taken up the post at the end of November. A national recruitment process began after current Chief Executive Sandra Black announced her retirement in August this year after almost 40 years public service. Alan Russell, aged 50, is currently responsible for the council’s Finance and Resources Department which includes corporate finance and operational services, HR and Organisational Development, Legal and Democratic Services, Transformation, Digital and Customer Services and Internal Audit. He was also recently elected to the role of Chair of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) Local Government Directors of Finance (Scotland). in Scotland and works closely with the local government organisation CoSLA, providing financial advice and support as required. people as we start to recover from the pandemic. “The recent COP26 event in Glasgow has also shone a spotlight on the issues we face to work together to tackle climate change. Like the pandemic, this is likely to impact more on the most vulnerable in our society and this will undoubtedly be a key focus for us now and in the years ahead.”

Renfrewshire Council Updates:
New designs revealed for transformation of Paisley's County Square New designs showing how Paisley’s County Square could be transformed into an expanded outdoor events venue and attractive arrival point for the town have been revealed. The public are now being asked to have their say on the proposals, which aim to encourage more use of the square all year round. The proposed changes are part of a wider council investment in Paisley town centre’s historic venues and outdoor spaces, including the ongoing transformations of the museum and town hall. The designs show: • the square levelled and flattened with high-quality paving and materials, improving accessibility and creating more room for it to host outdoor events, seating and markets; • much of the street furniture and planting removed to declutter the space; • new and improved lighting added to improve security; The front of the taxi rank would remain in roughly the same place near the station door, but the queue of taxis would move to Central Way, expanding the space available in the square by around 25%. The proposed changes to the taxi rank are subject to a separate statutory taxi licensing process, which would see taxis able to move two ways along Central Way, allowing them to reach the east and south of the town without going through the one-way system at Wallneuk. Existing access to the High Street along County Place/Gilmour Street for deliveries and other vehicles will be retained. The public are now being asked for their views on the designs, which are based on previous consultation with the public back in 2019, where residents and businesses wanted to see more use of the
square for events, and changes made that would encourage people to dwell. The designs can be seen – and you can register your comments – at www. renfrewshire.gov.uk/countysq-redesign The team behind the redesign are also looking into how the paving could be used to create an artwork reflecting the town’s heritage. The development around County Square will complement the AMIDS South project to develop new transport and active travel links along the White Cart corridor in the north of Paisley, linking the town centre with the emerging Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland (AMIDS) beside Glasgow Airport. The AMIDS South project was last month confirmed as receiving nearly £40m from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund. Renfrewshire Council leader Iain Nicolson said: “The past 18 months has shown the importance of high-quality outdoor space, and with four million people passing through Paisley Gilmour Station each year pre-pandemic, County Square is the town centre’s gateway to the world. “And with us expecting in excess of
125,000 visitors a year to the transformed museum when it reopens in 2023, the square will be many people’s first impression of the town – so we want it to be a positive one. “But the designs were also planned with local residents and businesses in mind – the aim is to create a space which allows more events and yearround outdoor activity to help drive footfall and life to the heart of the town. “At the same time, the square needs to continue to work as a transport interchange – and the solution for the taxi rank maintains easy access to taxis for train passengers and helps drivers move through the town, while expanding the space available in the square for other activity. “The changes were carefully planned on the basis of previous feedback from residents and businesses, and we’d now like to hear their views on the developed designs.” Plans are also moving forward for a redesign of Abbey Close to expand the space in front of the town hall for events and outdoor activity, and to improve the town’s gateway road junctions, to make the town centre more accessible to pedestrians and for active travel.

Renfrewshire Council Updates:
£800,000 funding boost confirmed for PACE new theatre The ongoing project to build a new community theatre space in Paisley town centre has taken a huge step forward after an £800,000 funding boost was confirmed. PACE Theatre Company are currently developing a new theatre in Paisley for children, young people and families – called Exchange – in a long-time vacant former nightclub opposite Paisley Gilmour Street Station. And the project has now received the sum from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grand Fund (RCGF), after a successful bid from Renfrewshire Council on PACE’s behalf. The £2.6m project – which will include a 300-seat main theatre plus other community and creative spaces - received planning permission in February 2020, and work has been under way since November of that year. When open in March 2023, it will host near-200 PACE performances each year, plus professional touring shows, and creative learning opportunities, as well as offering an alternative venue to Renfrewshire’s thriving cultural community. This round of the Scottish Government’s Capital Grant Regeneration Fund will see more than £25 million of funding shared between 22 locally-developed projects across Scotland that tackle inequalities and promote sustainable and inclusive economic recovery from the pandemic. PACE chief executive Grant Mason said: “We are extremely grateful to the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund for their investment in this project, which we believe will be transformative for young people, the local community, and for the regeneration of Paisley. “The award will allow major works to begin early next year and takes us significantly closer to the completion of Exchange. “The support of Renfrewshire Council throughout this process has been invaluable, with their vision for Exchange's potential to create a vibrant cultural landmark and community hub for Paisley mirroring our own." Renfrewshire Council leader Iain
Nicolson added: “Our officers have been working with PACE since 2019 to assist with their funding applications, and we are thrilled for them the Scottish Government have recognised the quality of the project by making this significant award. “PACE have been at the heart of the area’s creative community for decades, and when it opens Exchange will allow them to harness the power of culture to change the lives of future generations of Renfrewshire’s young people. “This development complements our wider vision to bring new life to the town centre by finding new cultural uses for vacant buildings, as well as our £100m investment in our own heritage venues and outdoor spaces, including the ongoing transformations of the museum and town hall. “The news also arrives as we prepare to open our Future Paisley exhibition in the new year, which will tell the story of how Paisley’s approach to culture-led regeneration can make it a leader for towns everywhere.” PACE had already received £420,000 from Renfrewshire’s share of the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Fund to fund initial work to the building, and to produce developed designs to allow
their application to the RCGF to be made. The project is bringing back into use a long-time vacant historic building in a prime location, which will allow it to come off the Buildings at Risk register. As well as the main theatre, Exchange will also host a small-scale 80-100-seat flexible studio theatre and creative learning space, plus a community creative play and workshop space. There will also be a family-friendly café/bar with informal performance area, dressing rooms, reading snug, and exhibition space for young visual artists. The space will be fully-accessible, autism-friendly, and co-designed and developed at every stage with a group of ‘young architects’. Sustainability is a key priority for the project, designed with the aim of creating a green, carbon neutral, theatre for the future that's financially and environmentally sustainable with 100% LED theatre fixtures. It is expected Phase II will be complete by December 2022, but PACE are calling on businesses and individuals to support the project by donating to their Million Pound Wall campaign, to reach the fundraising total required to complete the third and final phase of work.

Call to Renfrewshire employers to sign up to the YPG As part of Scotland’s response to the COVID-19 economic recovery, the Young Person’s Guarantee (YPG) was launched to give young people, aged 16-24, the chance to succeed through the opportunity of a job, apprenticeship, education, training or volunteering. And for employers, it offers help to develop a future pipeline of skills and experience, with young people at the heart of the workforce. Young people bring organisations a wealth of talent, creativity, and enthusiasm, critical now and for future success. DYW regional groups have been tasked by the Scottish Government to get employers of all sizes and sectors involved with Young Person’s Guarantee. The sign up process (completing a proforma) can capture efforts an employer is already doing, such as: taking on an apprentice,
Kickstart, supporting a school, offering work experience, being a living wage employer and many more. The YPG proforma captures what an employer is doing this year and also provides the opportunity to think further ahead and consider what they could do in the future. DYW West can then support by referring to partners as required (such as SDS, Career Ready, MCR Pathways, local school, local authorities etc). Once signed up employers appear on the YPG website and are sent the YPG employer logo that they can use on their website and social media. A number of Renfrewshire organisations have already signed up including: Renfrewshire Chamber, Engage Renfrewshire, City Gate Construction with several more being processed. Commenting on the YPG, Bob
Davidson DYW West Director said “I encourage Renfrewshire Chamber members to sign up and show support to local young people and at the same time help build a diverse workforce for the future.” For more info visit www. dywwest.co.uk/ypg & www. youngpersonsguarantee.scot #ypguarantee
