President’s Welcome Chamber Members, Welcome to the Spring edition of Business Matters magazine, which I trust will be an enjoyable and informative read. Firstly, on behalf of your Chamber I am delighted to welcome four new directors who were elected at our recent AGM. They are: Alison Hazel (Finance Director at the Jaw Brewery ltd), Victoria Ross (Business Enabler, The Royal Bank Of Scotland), Derek McNab (Managing Director, Mabbett & Associates ltd) and finally Craig Leslie (Managing Director, Gordon Leslie Group). The skills and experience our new directors bring compliments our already strong board and I believe demonstrates the depth of business talent that we enjoy within the chamber membership. I very much look forward to working with our new Directors and indeed all our Directors as we endeavour to help Renfrewshire grow and prosper. On the subject of welcomes I must congratulate Derek Provan, as the new Chief Executive Officer of AGS and Managing Director of Glasgow Airport. Derek joins us from Heathrow as Chief Operating Officer, having previously served 3 years as Managing Director of Aberdeen International Airport. Derek started his aviation career in 1998 at Glasgow Airport, where he held a number of senior positions. He is also a former Director of Renfrewshire Chamber and we are delighted to see him come home to take charge of one of the region’s most valuable economic assets. As I have said previously, there are potentially exiting times for Renfrewshire’s economy. In all my years as your President, I have never known the level of opportunity and investment available to us adeptly demonstrated by external investors purchasing the industrial complexes of Hillington Park and WestWay for a purchase of £137 million and £40 million respectively.

The Medical device firm Vascutek have recently announced a £33 million investment to scale up its facilities at Inchinnan. These committed investments together with the National Manufacturing Institute of Scotland (NMIS) to be based close to Glasgow Airport, demonstrates the faith and confidence that local and international companies have in our region. The foregoing initiatives together with the City Region Deal will it is hoped, create thousands of new jobs and it is vital therefore that the workforce can easily access these new and extended facilities. For some time, I and my co-directors have been concerned over the surface access to Renfrewshire. The M8 and surrounding roads continue to get more and more congested. We must collectively act to ensure we find suitable solutions to an ever-worsening problem. With this in mind, I arranged to meet with the Transport Minister and an official from Transport Scotland at the Scottish Parliament to discuss this issue first hand. I thereafter invited Humza Yousaf MSP to visit Renfrewshire to hear from several local companies directly about existing and anticipated problems they are experiencing accessing our region. The meeting was kindly hosted at the Donald Malcolm Heritage Centre by Andrew Malcolm. In addition to ten of our member companies, Transport Scotland and our local MSP George Adam were in attendance. The Minister found the meeting very useful especially with us highlighting the real challenges our companies face. We also took the opportunity of shining a spotlight on the quality of the companies located in the region and the investment opportunities coming to Renfrewshire. Hopefully he left with the message forcefully made that it is vital that our transport and infrastructure strategy keeps pace with the anticipated increase in jobs and population growth and ensures that poor connectivity

does not inhibit our future ambitions. A few days ago, I attended the launch of the excellent new destination brand Paisley.Is and website that highlights everything good and interesting to do in Paisley and Renfrewshire. The brand which has been developed will I believe highlight the attributes of our area and assist in attracting investors to the Paisley and Renfrewshire region. At the launch I was also encouraged to learn of the continuing investment of around £100 million committed by Renfrewshire Council to improve the arts and leisure facilities around Paisley. The cash investment is designed to leave a lasting legacy derived from the PR success of the 2021 campaign. Finally let me draw your attention to the prestigious annual Business Matters in Renfrewshire (B2B) event which will take place at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley on Thursday 10th of May. This is a free event and is the largest of its type in the area. The event is open to all businesses, schools and students to attend. Comprising of six informative free seminars, offering invaluable advice, learning and networking opportunities for you and your business. Tenants secured for Johnstone’s former shoe lace mill site 4th Developments, owners of the former Paton’s Mill site in Johnstone, has secured three new tenants, as the regeneration of the 10acre site attracts increasing interest. Phase 1 of Paton’s Mill Retail Park includes Aldi, Starbucks and Home Bargains, who have each signed up in recent months to create a supermarket, drive thru restaurant and retail offering respectively. Bell Building Projects Limited, the main contractor has been on site since mid-December and is working towards completion of Phase 1 of the development masterplan in Summer 2018. As well as retail units, the masterplan for the site includes the opening up of the riverside woodland with a historical trail. Announcing the new tenants, Claire Donaldson of 4th Consulting, who also operate as Project and Asset Managers for the development, said: “The redevelopment of the Paton’s Mill site offers an exciting new gateway for

Johnstone’s high street and as such will offer a prime location for shoppers. “We’re delighted to announce Starbucks, Aldi and Home Bargains as the initial tenants. We are now focusing on securing an occupier for Phase 2 which could be suited to a family pub operator on our adjacent riverside site.” There has been increasing demand in recent years for an Aldi store serving Johnston and the surrounding area, while OCO Westend, the Starbucks franchise moving into Paton’s Mill, will be a particularly strong addition to the local community. The company was the second appointed Starbucks franchise business in the world (the UK was the first market to franchise) and it has been working with

Starbucks since 2013. JJ O’Hara for OCO Westend, said. “We pride ourselves on being very community focussed and have already partnered with St.Vincent’s Hospice in Johnstone, where we raised £5,000 for a new chair lift in 2017. We are also very proud of our record as an employer. We have a fixation on developing great people and running great cafes and we are very excited to be opening in Johnstone in 2018!”

Accounting Changes and the Effects of Brexit likely to Prompt Fleet Operators to Switch to Rental Rental companies such as Arc Vehicle Rental are expecting a boost in long term rental deals as fleet operators look for ways to avoid new lease accounting rules that require vehicles to be reported on balance sheets, coupled with the effects of Brexit being so difficult to forecast. Ian Moffat, Managing Director of Arc Fleet Services believes “fleet decision – makers are deeply concerned about impending changes to the accounting treatment of leased company vehicles, which will see them appear on company balance sheets for the first time”. From January 1, 2019, the International

Accounting Standards Board will require companies to identify leased assets on their balance sheets and incur a liability for future rental payments. The off-balance sheet treatment of leased vehicles has long been promoted as one of the principle advantages of contract hire. Keeping assets and liabilities off a balance sheet can help companies to maintain a low debt-toequity ratio and enhance their ability to access finance. Contract hire is the UK’s number one fleet funding mechanism, but forthcoming changes to lease accounting rules mean that it will join all other

financial options in being on-balance sheet. This coupled with the effects of Brexit being so difficult to forecast, Fleet operators believe leaving the EU will increase vehicle operating costs. A recent Fleet News online poll showed almost 60% of respondents believe Brexit will hurt fleet budgets with higher costs. With many local companies now seeing the benefits of flexible rental as a way of acquiring a new van or company car, Ian believes demand for medium to long term rental is likely to receive a boost in demand as it did throughout the major recessions of 1999 and 2008.

DEREK PROVAN APPOINTED CEO OF AGS AIRPORTS AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF GLASGOW AIRPORT AGS Airports Ltd, which owns Aberdeen International, Glasgow and Southampton airports, has announced that Derek Provan will succeed Amanda McMillan as both Chief Executive Officer of AGS and Managing Director of Glasgow Airport. Born in Glasgow, Derek has over 20 years of experience in aviation and joins AGS from Heathrow, Europe’s largest airport, where he is currently Interim Chief Operating Officer. Derek joined Heathrow in 2013 having spent three years as Managing Director of Aberdeen International Airport. Derek started his aviation career in 1998 at Glasgow Airport where he went on to hold a series of senior roles including Airfield Operations Manager, Head of Security and Terminal Operations and Customer Services Director. Derek will take up his position at AGS and Glasgow Airport in April 2018. He will work closely with the Board, chaired by

Sir Peter Mason, to further build on the success of the group which carried over 15 million passengers in 2017. Commenting on the appointment, Sir Peter said: “Given Derek’s extensive experience and knowledge, not just of the AGS group of airports but the aviation industry as a whole, he was the natural choice of the Board. It is great to have someone of Derek’s pedigree joining the group and I am looking forward to working with him as we ensure our airports continue to deliver for the communities they serve.” On his new role, Derek said: “Very few people are afforded the opportunity to lead the airport at which they started their career. Glasgow has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years and starts 2018 having recorded its busiest year on record. A budget backing business and opportunity Renfrewshire Council’s budget for 2018-19 has been approved – with key investments to boost business in the area. A £391million for public services in the area was approved on Friday (2 March 2018). It includes a new £4.5million employability programme for Renfrewshire, supporting people into work and providing vital training opportunities. The programme is expected to lever European funding of £2.4million, bringing the total programme investment to £6.9million. Employers will benefit from skilled employees and the programme will maximise the potential of key projects in Renfrewshire, from the £65million National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland being built next to Glasgow Airport to the £100million capital investment in cultural and heritage regeneration and planned growth in early learning and childcare roles.

Council Leader Iain Nicolson said: “Major projects in Renfrewshire will bring significant new jobs to the area and that’s why our budget is investing in a new employability programme to ensure local people are best placed and well trained to make the most of these opportunities.” Renfrewshire’s budget also includes the largest single year investment in roads and footpaths at £7.2million, benefiting both businesses and customers. And building on the launch of free public wifi in Johnstone town centre, with Renfrew and Paisley to follow in spring, the budget confirmed a further £2million towards digital infrastructure. This will support the local economy and will be complemented by a multi-million bid to the UK Government’s Full Fibre Network Fund – with the potential to transform the region’s digital connectivity. The budget also included a £5million programme to tackle poverty across Renfrewshire and new funds to clean up the local environment and support

community projects. “This is a budget for growth,” added Councillor Nicolson. “We have balanced supporting the everyday needs of our communities with longer term investment in jobs and training to make sure everyone can thrive.”

Manufacturing innovation in Renfrewshire Renfrewshire has a proud tradition of innovation in manufacturing – from the earliest weavers through to modern chip-and-pin technology. This tradition looks set to continue with some exciting new developments set to create thousands of highly skilled jobs. The National Manufacturing Institute for Scotland is to be established in Renfrewshire, a new industry-led institute. And it will be the anchor tenant of a new advanced manufacturing innovation district centred around Glasgow Airport. A collaborative project between the Scottish Government and national skills and enterprise agencies, together with the University of Strathclyde and Renfrewshire Council, the institute will bring together skills, expertise, research and innovation to attract investment and develop Scotland into a global leader in advanced manufacturing. Renfrewshire Council is investing £39.1million in the enabling infrastructure,

funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “It will help companies right across Scotland embrace new manufacturing techniques, support cutting edge research and help to further develop the skills of our workforce. The manufacturing jobs of the future offer exciting and rewarding careers for young people. We want to inspire them to work in this sector and revive Scotland’s proud tradition of manufacturing and engineering.” Renfrewshire Council Leader Iain Nicolson said: “Renfrewshire has long been renowned for its manufacturing expertise and innovation, not least in giving Paisley Pattern to the world, and I am excited about the prospect of helping to play our part in making Scotland a global leader in advanced manufacturing.” Audrey Cumberford, Chair, Renfrewshire Economic Leadership Panel, said:

Paisley Town Centre benefits from latest round of heritage funding Improvements to Paisley’s built environment are continuing as buildings in Paisley Town Centre benefit from the latest raft of heritage funding. Repairs to 9 Gilmour Street are being carried out through the £4 million Paisley Townscape and Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (TH.CARS2) which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Environment Scotland and Renfrewshire Council and will be delivered over the next four years. The multi-million pound regeneration programme aims to make the area around the High Street a more attractive place to

visit and invest. Through the scheme, building owners can apply for grant funding for building repairs and shopfront improvements with a view to creating a high quality environment which will increase business interest and reduce the number of vacant properties in the area. Mr Allan Toti of A.D.T Properties who owns the ground floor shop units at 9 Gilmour Street, said: “The grant funding is a great thing and I would encourage other shop owners to take advantage of it as it offers business benefits to them as well as improving the look of the

DATA PROCESSORS BEWARE: WHAT THE GDPR MEANS FOR YOU With 25 May 2018 no longer just a distant thought, implementing the GDPR is, or should be, on the minds of all Data Controllers: Who is the Data Controller and who is the Data Processor, according to the ICO? Data Controller: “… a person who (either alone or jointly or in common with other persons) determines the purposes for which and the manner in which any personal data are, or are to be, processed.” Data Processor: “…in relation to personal data, means any person (other than an employee of the data controller) who processes the data on behalf of the data controller.” Examples of Data Processors could include cloud storage providers; marketing software and database providers; payroll providers; the company that shred your confidential waste etc. The DPA placed the legal responsibility for the processing of personal data with the Data Controller, albeit the requirement to have a contract in place gave the Data Processor contractual obligations. Crucially, if anything went wrong it was the Controller who faced regulatory action from the ICO, and the Controller who was fined – see the case of Scottish Borders Council v the ICO where it was the Processor who put the papers in the recycling bin, but the Controller who remained responsible. The breach here was that Scottish Borders Council did not have an appropriate contract in place. However, under the GDPR, Processors now have their own obligations. If you are a Processor, you could now be fined up to €10 million, or 2% of global turnover, if you are not compliant with these obligations. Read on to find out which areas of the GDPR apply to Processors as well as Controllers. Contracts Although there was a requirement for Controllers to have an appropriate

contract in place under the DPA, the GDPR strengthens that obligation and provides a prescriptive list of what must be in that contract. As a Processor, you may have experienced Controllers asking you to sign up to new terms and conditions, or asking about your compliance with the GDPR. Remember that because these terms will reflect the GDPR terms below, with which you must comply, pushing back on these terms and conditions may result not only in lost contracts, but also in your organisation being in breach of the GDPR. GDPR Requirements for Processors Register of Data Processing: Data Processors must keep a Register of Processing Activities including: • the name of the Processor and of each Controller on whose behalf the Processor is acting; • the categories of processing that are being carried out • any transfers of data to third countries or international organisations and the suitable safeguards that have been put in place; • a general description of the security measures in place, where possible. This information must be made available to the supervisory authority upon request. Security Measures: Data Processors must implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure data security. This is a risk based assessment and can include the consideration of pseudonymisation and encryption; regular reviews of system resilience; data availability; the ability to restore and recover lost data; and a process for regularly testing security. Notification of Breaches: Processors must notify the Data Controller without undue delay (interpreted as immediately by the EU) on discovering a personal data breach. The definition of a personal data breach refers only to an incident where personal data is affected, and is not limited to simply unauthorised access, but also includes the accidental or

unlawful loss or disclosure of data, as well as destruction or alteration of the data. Data Protection Officer: Certain Processors will require to appoint a Data Protection Officer (an individual who does not make decisions about processing but who monitors and advises on compliance): • Public authorities; • those whose core activity consists of processing which requires regular and systematic monitoring of data subjects on a large scale; or • those whose core activities involve processing special category data on a large scale There are restrictions on who the Data Protection Officer can be. He or she cannot be the Chief Executive or Head of IT, for example, as they are likely to make decisions that would conflict with the DPO’s advisory and monitoring role. This service can be outsourced. Cross Border Transfers: Data Processors cannot transfer personal data outside the EU or to an international organisation

without there being arrangements in place to ensure an adequate level of protection in relation to that data. Some countries have been approved by the EU Commission, but if such an adequacy finding has not been made, then you must put other measures in place. Representative in the EU: Data Processors established outside the EU, but who process the data of any person in the EU, are subject the GDPR and must appoint a representative within one of the Member States where the data subjects are located. Data Protection Impact Assessments: Although Processors themselves are not obliged to conduct impact assessments, Data Controllers are if they embark on a new project and it is likely to be a high risk to the rights and freedoms of individuals involved. However, Processors are required to assist the Data Controller in carrying out such risk assessments. Remedies against Processors Judicial Remedies: The GDPR provides that all data subjects will have the right to an effective judicial remedy where they consider that their rights have been infringed as a result of any

processing of their personal data which does not comply with the GDPR. This means that the Processor can be directly accountable to the data subject. Compensation Claims: The data subject will also be able to seek compensation for material and nonmaterial damage suffered as result of an infringement of the GDPR. Fines: Processors can now also be fined by the ICO, as stated above. Data Controllers and Contracts There must be a written contract with a Data Processor and all contracts must include the following provisions: • The Processor must only process the data on the instructions of the controller • Anyone processing data on the authority of the Data Processor must be subject to a commitment to confidentiality • Appropriate security measures are in place • Permission is sought from the Data Controller to appoint a sub-processor • The Controller is advised of any new sub-processor if permission has been granted in general terms in advance • The Processor must assist the

Controller to comply with data subjects’ rights and reporting obligations in relation to data breaches • To either return or delete the data once the processing has ended • An obligation to provide the Data Controller with information for audit/ inspection purposes The contract must also set out information about the processing that is to take place, including what data is to be processed and why. Controllers are also obliged to carry out due diligence in relation to Processors and to monitor compliance. The above is a basic outline of the new obligations placed on Data Processors by the GDPR, and what you can expect from Data Controllers updating contracts. GDPR contracts are coming your way and it is essential that you take steps to commence implementation of the new GDPR requirements as soon as possible. £33million Investment for Inchinnan based Vascutek A £33million investment has been approved for the major expansion of Vascutek’s headquarters and manufacturing facility at Inchinnan, Renfrewshire to help drive further growth for the global medical device company by parent company Tokyobased Terumo Corporation. Vascutek produces a wide portfolio of implants with a particular focus on treating patients with aortic disease. These implants have helped to save or improve the lives of over 2 million patients in over 100 countries worldwide. Over 90% of the products made at Inchinnan are exported. Established in 1982, Vascutek employs around 800 staff at its Inchinnan base. It applies advanced and innovative technologies to develop its products which include an extensive range of sealed woven and knitted polyester grafts for peripheral, abdominal and cardiothoracic surgery, ePTFE grafts and a

custom AAA stent graft system. The investment will be used to significantly scale up existing facilities at the site, including two new ‘cleanrooms’ – a carefully controlled manufacturing environment required for the production of the highest quality medical implants. Other aspects of the investment include equipment for the cleanrooms and a new sterilisation suite. The first phase of the site development is due to start in April 2018 and is scheduled for completion in 2021. Glasgow Airport celebrated a number of key route launches and announcements in March, including the introduction of Lufthansa’s new service to Frankfurt. The daily service connects Renfrewshire and the wider region with one of Europe’s biggest hub airports and provides easy onward connections to 209 destinations in 74 countries via Lufthansa’s network. The German giant already flies from Glasgow to Munich five times per week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the new Frankfurt route further underlines the airline’s commitment to West of Scotland. Francois Bourienne, Glasgow Airport’s Commercial Director, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Lufthansa’s new daily Frankfurt service. The route will not only continue to link two detinations that share much in common, but provide vital access to one of airline’s key international hubs where our passengers can connect onwards to hundreds of destinations worldwide. “Frankfurt is one of the world’s leading financial hubs and home to the European Central Bank. This service both enhances our growing European network and builds on the airport’s current links with Germany, which include Lufthansa’s Munich route launched last October and our hugely

popular flights to Dusseldorf and Berlin.” Announcing the new flight, Andreas Koester, Senior Director Sales UK, Ireland & Iceland, Lufthansa Group said: “This new daily service opens up a huge number of business and leisure opportunities to Scottish passengers. Not only does it provide access to one of Europe’s financial capitals, but it also introduces new options for onward travel to hundreds of worldwide destinations. “Passengers are now able to travel to both Frankfurt and Munich, giving them more flexibility and increased connections to numerous destinations in our large, multi-hub network. This level of growth is almost unprecedented and underlines the importance of Glasgow Airport within the Lufthansa worldwide network.” Also this month, long-standing airline partner Loganair launched a regular service between Glasgow and Donegal, a popular short-break destination for Scots for a number of years. The service will operate up to five times per week. The airline also announced plans to introduce a new Derry service from Sunday, October 28, which will operate five times per week. TUI UK also launched ambitious growth plans for summer 2019, which include the group basing another aircraft at Glasgow Airport next year, a 30,000 seat increase

and additional capacity on its Reus, Tenerife, Las Palmas and Rhodes routes. The tour operator will also introduce a new service to Antalya and additional flights to Naples and Alicante. Paul White, business development manager at Glasgow Airport, said: “The decision to base an additional aircraft is great news from TUI UK and demonstrates the group’s strong and continued commitment to Glasgow Airport. “Adding an additional 30,000 seats and extra flights will deliver even greater choice and flexibility on what are hugely-popular holiday destinations, so this will be welcome news for our passengers. “Antalya has always been a popular destination with Scottish holidaymakers and it is great to see TUI UK respond to growing passenger demand by adding the Turkish holiday resort to its evergrowing list of destinations.”

Helping to bridge the skills gap University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has been approved by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) to design and deliver four Graduate Apprenticeship (GA) programmes which get underway in September 2018. The programmes in IT Software Development, Engineering Design & Manufacture, Civil Engineering and Business Management, will be delivered by the University’s School of Engineering and Computing and School of Business and Enterprise respectively. UWS is working in partnership with SDS to deliver these four GA programmes, which have been developed in response to demand from industry. The Graduate Apprenticeships offer a chance for apprentices to work with leading employers whilst studying for an Honours Degree at UWS. This is the second consecutive year that UWS has received approval from SDS for the delivery of GAs. With three out of four employers in Scotland reporting critical skill shortages that are affecting their productivity and growth, added to the fact that more than 70% of Scottish employers think that job applicants lack technical, practical or job specific skills, GAs have never been more important. By combining academic learning with real-time practical experience in

the workplace, the GA programmes will deliver industry-relevant skills and qualifications. GAs are developed in partnership with employers to ensure that the learning is relevant to industry and that apprentices can apply their learning in the workplace immediately. Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS, said: “At UWS we understand the challenges that businesses face in attracting and retaining talent and continually strive to re-focus our provision for the benefit of industry and graduates. “We are delighted to be delivering these four Graduate Apprenticeship programmes that will meet the needs of industry as well as providing a wider range of opportunities for even more young people.” Apprentices are employed throughout the duration of their studies, allowing them to combine academic learning at one of Scotland’s largest modern universities with practical learning in the workplace. By investing in their workforce through GAs, employers are able to support new and existing staff to develop their skills to industry and professional standards For employees, GAs provide an opportunity to access the same learning opportunities as those who follow the traditional route of direct entry into

University, whilst gaining practical work experience. Advanced entry to the GA programmes is also possible for employees who can evidence previous industry relevant skills and qualifications. For employers, their employee’s learning can be customised to ensure the best fit with business needs and because the apprentices spend the majority of their time in the workplace, they are contributing to the productivity of the business at a much earlier stage. The end result is ‘industry ready’ graduates who understand their business. Graduate Apprenticeships have the potential to transform the way that young people access further and higher education, and its clear from the demand that many companies and Universities feel the same way. Skills Development Scotland, Director of Service Design and Innovation, Jonathan Clark, said: “Graduate Apprentices will be employed during their studies and because much of the learning takes place in the workplace they will have the opportunity to immediately apply what they learn at college or university in their jobs – and vice versa. “This provides opportunities for employers to help shape the skills of their employees and to address skills shortages affecting their industry and the local economy.”

UWS-based Paisley FM awarded Ofcom radio licence Paisley FM, which will be based at University of the West of Scotland’s Paisley Campus, has been awarded a community radio licence for the Paisley and Renfrewshire area by broadcasting regulator Ofcom. There were two applicants for the FM licence with Paisley FM being successful. This will bring a service back to the town after an absence of over a decade. Paisley FM plans to take to the FM airwaves from the summer of 2018, as a legacy of the Paisley 2021 City of Culture bid and - thanks to the support of University of the West of Scotland – will be based within the University’s campus in the town, with plans for state-of-theart studio facilities accessible to the local community. The licence bid, which was also supported by local politicians, Renfrewshire Council, the church and

Paisley artists was submitted in July 2017, with a final decision by Ofcom made today Paisley FM director Bob McWilliam said: “This is a really exciting day for Paisley and Renfrewshire and for radio listeners. Our proposal to Ofcom – which will now become a reality – was always about creating a distinctive station for the people of Paisley and Renfrewshire, made by the people of Paisley and Renfrewshire. We can’t wait to get started.” Annie McGuire UWS lecturer in the School of Media, Culture & Society and a director of Paisley FM, said: “It has been 15 years since Paisley had its own radio station, broadcasting from the town. Over the last few years the area has definitely found its voice again, particularly around the 2021 process. We’re excited at the prospect of hearing the people of Renfrewshire on the radio again, as well as providing opportunities

for UWS creative industries students to gain hands-on experience as part of their studies.” Those interested in getting involved with Paisley FM, either as programme makers or in other areas such as engineering, marketing or events, should keep an eye on the station website. The aim is to recruit 30 volunteers from a range of backgrounds in the first year with training offered for those keen to take to the airwaves.

Speaker of the House of Commons delivers seminar at UWS The Rt Hon John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, delivered a seminar to Honours year social science students at University of the West of Scotland (UWS) on Friday 2 February 2018. The students are currently benefiting from undertaking a Parliamentary Studies module, which is co-taught with officials from the Houses of Parliament. As part of the Parliamentary Studies module fourth year undergraduate students participated in the seminar at the University’s Paisley Campus on Friday led by The Rt Hon John Bercow. He delivered the seminar on the role and modernisation of the UK Parliament The Rt Hon John Bercow, the Speaker of the House of Commons, said: “It was a real pleasure to deliver the seminar at the University of the West Scotland. I was delighted to meet with and take questions from the students on the Parliamentary Studies Module. I was hugely impressed by their interest in and understanding of Parliament, and I hope they found the session as worthwhile and enjoyable as I

did. The Parliamentary Studies module provides a great opportunity for students to learn more about the practical side of Parliamentary processes, combined with robust academic content created by the University.” The Parliamentary Studies module, which is the only higher education module formally approved and co-taught by the Houses of Parliament, provides students with a detailed knowledge of how the Parliament works in both theory and practice. It is delivered through a partnership between the Houses of Parliament and a university; the university provides academic and theoretical content,

and Parliament provides practical teaching about the work, processes and business of Parliament. OPERA UNDER CANVAS WITH CAST OF UP TO 200 HEADS TO PAISLEY PARK Paisley has been chosen as the site for Scottish Opera’s production of Ruggero Leoncavallo’s opera Pagliacci in July 2018. The performances will take place at the city’s Seedhill Playing Fields in a huge tented structure, and Scottish Opera is inviting local people from across Renfrewshire and beyond to be part of the performing company of up to two hundred. Pagliacci tells the story of Canio, the leader of a troupe of travelling players, who discovers his wife Nedda is having an affair. His jealousy erupts before an unsuspecting audience, as the play-withina-play takes a tragic turn. Scottish Opera’s Music Director Stuart Stratford will conduct and Bill BankesJones, founder of Tête à Tête Opera, will direct the promenade production, which is being specially created to be staged outwith the walls of Scottish Opera’s usual theatre venues.

Open to everyone aged 16 and over who enjoys singing, dance or drama or Leoncavallo who would like to learn a new skill, those interested are invited to attend one of four taster events at Scottish Opera’s Silver Cloud Studio in Hillington in November. No previous performance experience is needed and those who take part will be right in the middle of the action, performing alongside The Orchestra of Scottish Opera, international soloists and a professional chorus. The Company also wants to hear from existing theatrical, musical, gymnastic, cheer-leading or sporting groups to be part of the carnival-like

setting which will be created for the show. The November taster sessions will be followed by an introductory weekend in January and weekly rehearsals for the landmark immersive production will begin in early March. The performances of Pagliacci will be on 26, 28 and 29 July in Paisley, which has been shortlisted for UK City of Culture in 2021.

Money stress contributes to lost productivity Employers in Renfrewshire are being encouraged to help staff save and borrow sensibly in order to reduce time off for stress. Employees with money worries are more likely to take time off sick according to the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute Last year, data analysis from 40,000 households found that 67% of employees who are struggling financially report at least one sign of poor mental health that could affect their ability to function at work. Managers are being asked to help staff by offering payroll deduction schemes from their local credit unions in order to either build up savings, or to repay lowcost loans. Heather Kay, Credit Union Development Officer at Engage Renfrewshire, said “Almost half of all working days lost to ill health were caused by stress, and we know that money worries have a huge impact on wellbeing.”

“Saving even a few pounds a week helps many families to save and can relieve pressure around Christmas bills or unexpected events such as car repairs or a broken washing machine.” She also added “In Renfrewshire we have 5 credit unions which offer payroll deductions as a way for employees to save. It’s so easy and can make such a big difference.” The credit unions also offer low cost loans and borrowers do not require good credit scores to be accepted. Diane Dunn of Renfrewshire Council’s Partnerships and Inequalities Team said “We would encourage employers to support their employees’ financial security by providing both savings schemes and short-term loans through payroll, allowing a lower rate of interest to be offered and helping employees to avoid fees and charges.” “Through partnership with credit unions, and by offering payroll deduction, employers can demonstrate

their commitment to their employees’ financial and mental wellbeing, and ultimately reduce sickness absence due to financial stress.” As well as financial benefits, payroll deduction can assist with employee recruitment and retention. In terms of liability, it is similar to engaging in a pension scheme, whereby the employer signposts the availability of the benefit but does not recommend or advise a particular course of action. Employee confidentiality is maintained because employers do not have any information on whether an employee is borrowing or saving. SCHOOL UPDATES: WOW - An Experience that has become a reality for S3 Renfrew High Pupils Fourteen S3 pupils were given the chance to experience 2 days of intensive work experience with a difference at centre management of intu Braehead. In an ‘Apprentice’ style event the group were spilt into two teams and told to answer an event brief. The winning team leader, Jack Arbuckle said, “Whilst participating in the event at intu Braehead we managed to learn about business, teamworking, and also how much work goes into a business.” At the end of the two days the teams had to answer the brief in the form of a ‘pitch’ and convince a panel of management judges to choose their event. Both teams delivered beyond all expectations, both creatively and professionally. The other team leader Cara Jordan said, “I felt excited to be part of this, I loved working in a proper business team. It let me show my leadership skills.” The management

team were so impressed that they asked the team to combine and deliver the winning event for real at Soar @intu Braehead. Cara continued, “I can’t wait to be part of a real events team at intu Braehead!!!!” Jack concluded,” I and everyone else there is excited to be doing the event for real at intu Braehead.” Billy Burke, Head Teacher, said, “This pilot project with our partners at Intu Braehead exceeded our hopes and expectations. The young people embraced and relished the opportunity to work in the business world and the staff team were superb with them. I am really grateful to all involved – they have helped create the model for the future expansion of the project, and have set the bar very high indeed!” Caroline McColl, Employability Coordinator said, “An exceptional experience all round. What started as a discussion became a reality

St Benedict’s Dragons Den All of our S2 pupils were given the challenge to design a product which would benefit the life of someone, whether that is by making life simpler, more manageable or easier. After close consideration, two groups from each class were entered into our St Benedict’s Dragons Den. On our judging panel we had two very special visitors from industry, Susanne from Aggreko and Stephen from Ethos Energy, as well as our Head Teacher, Mr O’Neil and Technologies Faculty Head, Mr Wilson. The day was a fantastic success for St Benedict’s and inspired all involved to develop career pathways into the STEM sector. Our winners were Christopher and Glen who designed a bus tracker app for the school to track the movement of our school buses in the morning. Well done to all involved!

Barsail Primary School The Barsail World of Work pupil group are very excited to be holding their first Careers Fayre on 28th March. This group of driven young pupils have worked with staff to contact local businesses for our careers Fayre. We’re delighted that we have over 35 businesses attending including: NHS, Love St Vets, Strathclyde Fire, Paisley Physiotherapy, St Mirren FC and more. We’re very lucky to have a range of careers represented such as banking, air hostess, author, artist, fashion designer. It is with the help of local businesses that we can inspire and provide an insight into the world of work for pupils.

Linwood High School was thrilled to welcome so many guests for our Senior Careers Speed Network on Thursday 8th March 2018, International Women’s Day and in Modern Apprenticeship Week. Thanks to SDS, DYW West, SAE Institute, WCS, ATOS, Systra, Mott McDonald, Carousel, the British Army, Renfrewshire Council, SWECO and Mabbets. Your support of our pupils is hugely appreciated. Huge thanks to Craig McHugh from Clark Contracts and Bob Davidson from DYW West for coming in to do Mock Interviews with our S5 Employability class. Well done to all our pupils who did great interviews for our guests. Success all round! S2 enjoyed the Fun Maths workshop on Wednesday 22nd February 2018. Thanks to STEM Connects at Glasgow University for lending us the material and to the whole LHS Maths department for running the event.

PARK MAINS HIGH SCHOOL

On Tuesday 13th March Park Mains High School hosted their third S2 parents and pupils careers event. The night consisted of parents and pupils engaging with twenty local businesses in a speed networking event. Attendees were able to make informed choices about who they spoke to for five minute intervals. They gained an interesting insight into the world of work and what careers may await pupils when they leave school. The careers event ran alongside the S2 subject choice talk from senior management and so parents and pupils had an informative and interesting evening. The parent council provided refreshments throughout the evening and parents had the chance to win a host of prizes in the raffle. The evaluations suggest that both parents and business partners found the evening successful, well organised and a worthwhile event for all involved.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week

S4/5 pupils attended two Modern Apprenticeship application workshops run by Mr. Marshallsay PT Employability and our Skills Development Scotland Careers Advisors. As part of International Women’s Day, a group of S3 female pupils enjoyed a visit to the site of the new St. Paul’s School with Morrison’s Construction. They got to see how the site was designed and is being built and have been invited back in June to see the finishing touches being made. Those pupils not fortunate enough to be out of school were finding out about ‘Women Who Invent’ with a series of informative posters displayed across departments in the school.

Renfrewshire Marks Scottish Apprenticeship Week

Renfrewshire marked Scottish Apprenticeship Week with a series of events designed to encourage young women to consider careers in traditionally male dominated sectors. The week celebrated the benefits apprenticeships bring to businesses, individuals and the economy, and coincided with International Women’s Day on Thursday 8th March. There were a series of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) events for young women at various venues across Renfrewshire. The Young Women into Stem initiative is delivered in partnership by Renfrewshire Council, DYW West, Invest in Renfrewshire, West College Scotland and a number of local businesses. It was set up to address how women are underrepresented in the sector and encourages them to apply for apprenticeships by forging links between

employers, colleges and schools. At West College Scotland’s Paisley campus students completed specific pieces of work which will enhance their skillset, covering bricklaying and painting and decorating. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde hosted an event at Paisley’s Royal Alexandria Hospital where school pupils visited the engineering departments, clinics and laboratories and gained an insight into the various job roles. Morrison Construction took students on a tour of the St Paul’s School site in Paisley and gave an understanding of what is required to keep the project on track and to deliver a high-quality build. One of Morrison’s female quantity surveyors was on-hand to share her experience of working within this sector. Paisley firm Clark Contacts gave students a tour of its head office where they learned about the company’s in-

house academy and the roles available, from estimating and quantity surveying to marketing. They also met many of the firm’s female employees and had the opportunity to discuss their experience of the sector. Rolls Royce Inchinnan hosted a site visit of its engineering plant on International Women’s Day, with all attendees asked to wear purple to mark the day which celebrated women across the globe. Renfrewshire Council Leader Iain Nicolson said: “In line with the rest of Scotland, Renfrewshire has a significant gender gap in terms of so few young women going into the traditionally male dominated careers of construction, science, technology and engineering. “It’s vital to open up their horizons and provide access to STEM opportunities and I’m delighted that so many had the chance to find out about a wide range of jobs during Scottish Apprenticeship Week.”

DYW West Update Team Goldslam are made up of pupils from across the Renfrewshire schools, it a partnership project between, Renfrewshire Council, West college Scotland and Developing the Young Workforce west region and is in its pilot year. Team Goldslam are building a formula 24 race car, which will be raced against other teams from across Scotland at the Greenpower final at East fortune in April. The programme aims to inspire the engineers of the future, and this group of fantastic young people have definitely inspired us. They are an amazing group of young people, a lot of the team come from disadvantaged backgrounds, some are in care, some are non-attenders at school, but are all very passionate about pursuing a career in engineering and the hope is that this course will give them all the skills they need to progress onto a full time college course or an apprenticeship. The team come to West College on a Thursday, and work with their lecturer Colin to build the car and learn a whole host of other skills, this isn’t just a

mechanics course, they need to run it like a business so they need raise money to buy materials such as carbon fibre, race suits, helmets, pop up tent, as they race will be based on a proper formula 1 race, there will be pit stops, driver changes... So the team have been involved in various presentations to business along the way even delivering a two minute pitch to business at Renfrewshire chamber of commerce at an event in Hillington park. As a result of this we took an advert in Renfrewshire chamber of commerce magazine, which Thomas Bradley read and invited us into their office to discuss how they could help. Emma Gormley who is picture with Scott is the driving force

behind the team, JacQui and Scott were blown away by her enthusiasm and passion for the project hence the reason why they wanted to help. Thomas Bradley have been fantastic and great supporters of the project and want to help by encouraging local business to get involved.
