President’s Welcome Welcome to our final Business Matters of 2018. As the year draws to a close this is a useful opportunity to reflect on some of the key achievements of your Chamber in the last year. • Chamber membership remains healthy at just under 570, with 72 new members joining in the last 12 months. • B2B 2018 Business Matters in Renfrewshire saw 60 exhibitors at the Lagoon with 6 seminar speakers, strong attendance throughout day, over 400 people attended. • Rocco 2018 was one of records. The event sold out in record time, we had a record number of awards and raised a record amount for the chamber charity fund. 500 attendees, over 100 entries, Main Sponsor PaisleyIs. • Became first Chamber in Scotland to retain Investor in People Gold Accreditation. • Awarded Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme - Silver Award • Export Documentation Inspection passed 100% • Bi-Annual BCC accreditation passed Jan 2018 passed 100% • Skills Ambassador Program delivered to every senior school. Ambassadors recruited to work with group of young people on coaching, inspiring confidence, cv building & interview skills over 6 months. • STEM fortnight offered 458 opportunities for young people with 8 companies offering activities. • Business Mentoring – 121 business mentor matches. • Meetings – 200+ bookings for our meeting rooms. • 50 Events with 2,500 attendees. • We also processed 11,000 export documents, emphasising the importance of international trade and export for Renfrewshire’s business community. • Business centre refurbished with new furniture, flooring & décor with support from members PMA Contracts, Abbey Decorators and Carpertwise. • Paisley tourism network launched in partnership with Visit Scotland & Council. • Transport Strategy: Co-ordinated visit of Transport Minister to Renfrewshire with 10-member companies hosted at Donald Malcolm Heritage Centre with Malcolm Group. • Meet the leader: hosted Iain Nicolson, leader Renfrewshire Council at UWS.

According to a recent report, Renfrewshire’s economy has been in rude health over the past year. There have been some exciting announcements made regarding substantial capital investment in the region, adeptly demonstrated by external international investors purchasing the industrial complexes of Westway and Hillington Park. We have also seen existing companies such as Thermal Fisher and Terumo Aortic committing huge sums to expand their existing operations. The announcement earlier this year that the National Manufacturing Institute of Scotland is to be based close to Glasgow Airport further demonstrates the faith and confidence that local and international companies have in our region. I believe that Renfrewshire has the second highest rate of new house building in the Glasgow City region, which is positive news. However this house building program could in my opinion, exacerbate existing connectivity problems we have with M8 and surrounding roads, congested particularly at peak times. Whilst the recently announced bridge over the Clyde from Yoker to Renfrew will help the situation, more has to be done. Statistics show that

Renfrewshire has a high “drive to work” and a low bus/rail usership. We must provide an alternative means of transport. In my view that must be rail combined with a park and ride facility. We must not let poor access to inhibit future and existing investment to the area and help our main economic drivers such as the Airport grow and prosper. Please continue to support your Chamber; Attend our events and make best use of our products and services. If you wish to know more about how we can help your business grow and prosper please in touch with the team. All that remains for me to say is enjoy the break over the festive period and I hope you get the chance to relax and enjoy the company of family and friends. Your chamber team are looking forward to helping Renfrewshire grow and prosper in 2019. Support your Chamber and your Chamber will support you.

A Warm Welcome from our Chief Executive Welcome to the Winter edition of our ever-popular magazine Business Matters. Rocco 2018 will be remembered as a record-breaker. The event sold out in record time, raised a record amount for charity and had a record number of awards. The evening had a real sense of occasion with main sponsor PaisleyIs and outstanding entertainment from the emerging artists of Scottish Opera. Thank you to all our sponsors, all who entered and our worthy winners. Feedback has been very positive and please put Friday 15th November 2019 in your diary as planning is already underway. Your Chamber has recently retained Investors in People Gold Accreditation, the first Chamber in the country to do so. The staff and board are delighted with the award which has been achieved with three new team members since our last assessment in 2015. In November the Chamber was recognised with a Sliver Award by the

MOD Employer Recognition Scheme you can read more on page 31. Congratulations to Mark Johnston and the team at Glasgow Airport with the historic announcement of the first ever A380 scheduled service with Emirates from Scotland. The service will start in April and is a major coup for Scotland. The Airport is investing £8 million and the service is a boost for tourism across the city region. I also encourage you to get 2019 off to a flying start by engaging with our Business Mentoring program. This free service matches an experienced business person who can help you overcome a challenge or take your business onto a new level. The program’s value was demonstrated at this year’s Roccos: six of the Award nominees are currently in the mentoring program and four of those won a Rocco on the night! Contact our Business Mentoring Executive Stuart Murray at the Chamber to find out how the program can help your business grow and prosper.

We return in January with our Burns lunch on Thursday 24th January at Ingliston Country Club. Always a popular event with Burns speaker Martin Cassidy, Burns singer and Russell from UWS, our regular Rocco piper. To all our members, from myself and all the team at the Chamber have an enjoyable Christmas and best wishes for a prosperous 2019.

R3NDER - Revolutionising product development in Scotland Despite the constant advancement in technology, the process of developing a product for commercial success is by enlarge, firmly stuck in the dark ages. Most companies developing products, regardless of business stature or value, are continuing to waste money by creating numerous physical prototypes until they finally produce a version which is commercially viable. As a director of an innovative company with a rich history of inventing and successfully commercialising its own products for the last 45 years, selling hundreds of millions of units worldwide, we are familiar with the challenges that exist when trying to make a success of your concept. We have taken the same approach as most other similar businesses have and spent a small fortune on physical prototyping, by preparing version after version of our invention. Physical prototyping and developing products or

manufacturing equipment is laborious, costly and often, the results do not reflect the concept you initially envisaged. If you are not impressed with your prototype, do you think your potential customers will be!? Probably not. Because of these issues, our team of engineers and CGI specialists have been working on an efficient and effective new method to; cut costs, allow you to market a product quicker and improve your chances of converting business. R3NDER are shaking up the prototyping and engineering market with a revolutionary and affordable solution. Using a blend of engineering expertise and a proficient knowledge of rendering, R3NDER bring your concepts to life by creating photorealistic artificial models, which can replace the need for repetitive physical prototyping. We remove the expense and provide a product which is much more efficient and effective to use as a development tool or for sales materials.

Are you in the process of commercialising a product and want to test its viability? Do you have a complex product which is difficult to explain? Are you in the process of raising investment or securing a budget for your project? Do you want your product’s imagery to compete with market leaders? Do you want to maximise the commercial value of your IP and increase the valuation of your business? Talk to R3NDER. E: enquiries@r3nder.co.uk T: 0141 212 2468 W: www.r3nder.co.uk

Award winning collaboration is Innovating for Success BAE Systems Surface Ships in Glasgow is delighted to have been awarded the prestigious BAE Systems Chairman’s Business Leader Award in the “Innovating for Success” category. The accolade was received for the “Enabling Supervisor Essentials” programme delivered in partnership with West College Scotland. The programme was developed and delivered following recognition of a gap in the training model. Funding from the Flexible Workforce Development Fund was utilised to design the innovative training programme. Thomas McCartney, Capability Coordinator at BAE Systems Surface Ships explained how the programme came to be developed. “Our new-to-role supervisors had previously been expected to hit the ground running without ever having received formal training that directly related to the day-to-day expectations of the role. It was assumed that there were Supervisory SME’s on the ground with coaching competence therefore a formal process was never implemented. As a result we left the Supervisors open to knowledge gaps.” The collaborative aim was to create a bespoke training package to be professionally delivered using content collated by each major delivery function and stimulate communication between Supervisors and their support functions. This approach provides essential information required to competently carry out the expectations of the role while giving a better understanding of responsibilities within the delivery team. The objective of partnering with West College Scotland was to ensure that the information was supported and delivered by highly

qualified education professionals, ensuring the best possible quality of learning for the Supervisors. The programme was positively received by all involved and has had a significant measurable effect on the workforce. Thomas said of the outcome, “The delegates’ feedback was that the training was comprehensive and not only was it ideal for new supervisors, there was also value for the current population. While it’s great to receive recognition for the work through the award, the value is really in the benefit provided to our Supervisors. We couldn’t have done it without West College Scotland - a big thanks to all involved” Sara Rae, Director of Business, Enterprise & Innovation at West College Scotland spoke of the programme’s success, “We’re delighted that our work with BAE Systems Surface Ships has been recognised with this award. Our Business and Engineering teams worked to understand, interpret and deliver on the identified needs so we were able to then shape bespoke content to make a tangible difference. To do this across so many disciplines ably demonstrates the breadth of capabilities West College Scotland can deploy to support businesses of all sizes and sectors. This in turn is why BAE Systems trusts West College Scotland as its Flexible Workforce Development Fund partner.” Flexible Workforce Development Fund is available to employers paying the Apprenticeship Levy in 2018-19, with each employer entitled to apply for up to a maximum of £15,000. The Real Risks of Imagine this. You’re sitting on a train station bench, angry that the Train company have cancelled the 18:09 train back home to Stirling. In your frustration, you use your smartphone to Tweet them:

Just minutes later, to your delight you receive a reply. Perhaps they’re not so bad after all. You actually feel a little guilty for ranting!..

While waiting, you access the claim form and fill out all the details. At least the delay hasn’t cost you anything, and maybe you can use the train vouchers (when they arrive to your house) as a family treat to visit somewhere nice. Following an hour waiting, you catch the 19:22 home. It’s a longer train journey, but at least you’re on your way. While passing the time scanning your emails, you notice an alert from Twitter. It’s from the Train company again.

Result!.. That’s a decent saving – and all from one tweet!. You’ve still got 20 minutes before your destination, so you quickly click and visit their ticket booking page (which does indeed show all tickets discounted) and proceed to buy a new monthly ticket. Finally you’re home.. you pop up to say goodnight to the kids (already in bed), and then settle down on the sofa to catch up on the latest box set. Another alert vibrates your phone. It’s from the Train company again.. (they’re keen… what now?)..

Twitter Rants! “Delayed Train?”.. Earlier they had advised it was a signalling fault. And why are they advising I claim again? Don’t they know this has already been dealt with. Talk about incompetence. It takes a while. But the realisation starts to filter through. Oh dear. This isn’t good. Have you worked it out yet? I’m hoping you have, and I’m hoping you’d have realised what was going on from the Train Company’s very first response. Social Media scams (like most scams) work because you’re in a bad place. You’re frustrated, you’re angry, you want to rant at someone, and you expect, and indeed you got, an immediate reply. It was them wasn’t it? That nice easy link through to their website. That simple form where you provided your name, address and more. That polite follow up which encouraged you to act quickly, logging in with your username and password (which you probably use elsewhere on the internet) and freely giving them your credit card

details in exchange for a discounted ticket. Felt good at the time... the wrong had been righted, justice had prevailed, you’d got one over the big company… And then you realised. Social Media impersonation is massively on the rise. With just a few “saved images” and a copy/paste of an existing bio it’s easy to setup a profile which looks pretty close to the original. The identity theft victim could be your friend, your bank, or your regular train company. But the real victim is you. You were fooled. Even if just momentarily, that “trust” you gave, and the data you provided them could result in significant consequences. The above “fictional” story is based on a real incident concerning someone I know. Someone who’s not stupid, not ‘computer illiterate’, not greedy, and up until that point would consider themselves cyber savvy. But caught off guard at the wrong moment… THINK.

CYBER SECURITY ESSENTIALS WORKSHOP Hillington Park Innovation Centre Thurs 24th January 2019 9.30am to 1pm. £65 + vat

“Cyber Security” - what do you think? - Do you think “it won’t happen to me”? - Do you think it “only impacts big companies”? - Do you think the whole subject is “hype and overkill”?

If you answered yes to any of the above... Think again! This practical half day workshop is aimed at small business owners who want to embrace online opportunities, while protecting themselves from the real-world dangers and their impact in today’s connected world. We’ll look at website security, social media safety, password protection and more. More details at www.nsdesign.co.uk/training/

BTO Solicitors

Paul Motion, Partner BTO

Paul Motion and Jonathan Tait consider impending law changes and query the absence of procedural safeguards for accused persons. The Privacy and Electronic Communications (Amendment) Regulations 2018 will come into force on 17 December 2018. They will increase the Information Commissioner’s powers by imposing personal liability on directors of companies and partners of a Scottish partnership, for serious breaches of the law in relation to direct marketing. If the ICO serves a Monetary Penalty (i.e. a fine) on the business, the ICO now has the option of serving an additional fine on the directors or partners, provided conditions are met. The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) set out the legal parameters for direct marketing in the UK. PECR was designed to prohibit companies from sending or authorising the sending of unsolicited electronic communications to consumers for direct marketing purposes, this of course unless the individual receiving these communications has either consented to such or the company sending the communication are able to demonstrate that there is an existing commercial relationship in place with the individual. Under the original regime, companies who breached PECR could be issued with fines of up to £500,000. But it became common for companies to circumvent these fines by “phoenixing”, that is, liquidating the company and then simply opening up under another name and continuing to operate. This

Jonathan Tait, Solicitor BTO

caused frustration to the ICO and Parliamentarians, some of whom went as far as to call for not only personal liability of officers but possible imprisonment. The 2018 PECR amendment is designed to deal with avoidance measures and also impose the fines upon an “officer of the body”, or a Scottish partnership in addition to the company itself which means that owners and directors will be held personally liable now for any fines imposed by the ICO. So, there may be a recovery of the fine even should the company fail to pay or go into liquidation. An officer of the body is defined as, “a director, manager, secretary or other similar officer of the body or any person purporting to act in such capacity, or where the affairs of the body are managed by its members, a member”; and in relation to a Scottish partnership, “a partner or any person purporting to act as a partner.” The ICO can only serve a Monetary Penalty Notice on an “officer of the body” simultaneously with the body itself and the power only applies where the contravention “took place with the consent or connivance of the officer” or where the contravention can be “attributable to any neglect on the part of the officer”. The threshold needed to establish a PECR breach was significantly lowered in 2015. Unlike a breach of the Data Protection Act, the ICO no longer needs to establish a serious breach of the PECR regulations that is likely to cause victims “substantial damage or substantial distress”. The second limb has gone and the trigger for a PECR fine is now merely a serious breach of the PECR regulations in

the sole opinion of the ICO. In traditional criminal prosecutions likely to result in an individual facing any level of criminal fine, let alone the £500,000 available to the ICO, the accused would expect an ECHR compliant process and the right to a public trial before a fair and impartial tribunal. But in relation to both PECR and data protection fines – and it is to be noted that they are usually described in those terms - the ICO acts as the regulator, the investigator, prosecutor, judge and sentencing body. The ICO’s findings in support of Monetary Penalties are made only on the balance of probability rather than beyond reasonable doubt. There is no caution and charge procedure, no requirement to advise of the right to legal advice and generally most of the safeguards found in criminal court procedure are absent. The first opportunity for judicial oversight is the right of appeal to the First Tier Tribunal. However, the ICO’s policy of offering a 20% discount for quick payment of fines and its approach that appealing a fine will lose you the 20% discount, are disincentives to appeal. These developments should be of concern to the owners or partners of any business that is carrying out direct marketing and to solicitors advising them. Paul Motion is a Partner and Jonathan Tait is a solicitor, in BTO’s Data Protection Team Paul Motion, Partner and Solicitor Advocate, prm@bto.co.uk / 0131 222 2939 Jonathan Tait, Solicitor, jta@bto.co.uk / 0131 222 2939 www.bto.co.uk

How is your website performing? 3 top tools to help you better understand! Off the back of our recent shortlisting for the 2018 ROCCO award for Outstanding Business under 5 staff, we’ve been getting a lot of questions about the tools / techniques we use to collect and interpret data from company websites. So we thought we’d take this opportunity to quickly explain 3 of our favourite techniques! Firstly, why? Why go to such lengths to collect data? Well, in our opinion it’s pretty straight forward. You don’t have unlimited budget or time to allocate to improving your digital performance. Understanding exactly what is or isn’t working online allows you to better prioritise both the time and money you’re allocating. Given the opportunity to better prioritise, why wouldn’t you explore an improved use of data?

We recommend you get yourself familiar with these 3 tools / techniques: Google Analytics: A free tool that gives you access to a number of insights about your site including most popular device types, screen sizes used, user genders, best performing traffic sources, most valuable pages and more. Not just in terms of volumes, but how much each is improving (or not!) over time, and which combination is contributing most to your lead generation. Heat Mapping: Heat Mapping present a very visual output of how people interact with pages on your site, letting you see where users click, where their mouse hovers and how

far down your pages they scroll. An easy to understand reporting tool, often free or very low cost to access, we’ve yet to meet a client who hasn’t been impressed with the simple visual outputs of heat map tracking. A/B Testing: A more technical technique allowing you to put 2 versions of the same page live at the same time. 50% of visitors are shown version 1, and 50% are shown version 2. A data driven and objective approach to testing new images, different headlines, varied button colours and more, and understanding statistically which versions work best in driving leads from your site. MacRoberts celebrates a double award win at the British Legal Awards and the Law Awards of Scotland MacRoberts’ Real Estate team has been named Property Team of the Year at the prestigious 2018 British Legal Awards, on the same night Rebecca Barrass was crowned Junior Lawyer of the Year at the Law Awards of Scotland. The British Legal Awards, which took place in London on 30th November, celebrates achievement, excellence and innovation in the legal profession, and showcases the outstanding achievements of firms spanning the UK’s legal community. MacRoberts was the only Scottish-based firm to be shortlisted at the 2018 awards and fought off competition from magic circle firms Clifford Chance, CMS, Herbert Smith Freehills and Hogan Lovells. The awards follow an outstanding year for the firm’s Real Estate team, which has worked on a wide variety of high-profile projects across Scotland and the UK for clients including major corporations, retail and luxury brands, SMEs and public and third sector bodies. Neil Kennedy, Managing Partner said, “As an independent Scottish law firm, to be recognised at this level is an outstanding achievement. We are immensely proud of our real estate team and this award is testament to the high quality clients, projects and talent that

we have at MacRoberts.” This is the third consecutive year that MacRoberts has been recognised at the British Legal Awards, having previously been Highly Commended in the Commercial Team of the Year category in 2016 and shortlisted again in the same category in 2017. On the same night in Glasgow, Senior Solicitor in construction, Rebecca Barrass, was crowned Junior Lawyer of the Year at the prestigious Law Awards of Scotland. A key member of the firm’s construction team, Rebecca specialises in contentious construction and advises clients in both the public and private sector in relation to complex and challenging construction matters. Neil said: “Since Rebecca joined us as a trainee, she has always shown total commitment to the firm – going way above and beyond what is expected of her. From her success and relationships with clients, to her work on the firm’s Diversity & Wellbeing Forum and the MacRoberts Young Construction Network, she is a valued member of the team and I am delighted that her hard work has been recognised at a national level”. These awards come during a prosperous year for MacRoberts. The acquisition of Yuill + Kyle in December

2017 saw the firm strengthen its debt recovery offering, whilst Neil Kennedy was appointed as Managing Partner of the firm in May 2018 and Euan Duncan as Chair earlier this month. The firm has recently posted its accounts revealing that profit, turnover and staff headcount are all up on last year’s figures. The firm has also been shortlisted for Firm of the Year at the Legal 500 Awards 2019, which recognise and reward the best in-house and private practice teams over the past 12 months, based on firms’ market profile, growth and development. The awards ceremony takes place in London in February.

MacRoberts announces Euan Duncan as Chair MacRoberts is delighted to announce that Euan Duncan is the firm’s new Chair. Since 2015, Euan has been an extremely valued and effective member of MacRoberts’ Management Board. This new appointment will see Euan take on the role of Chair as part of the updated and widened strategic management of the firm. The new role will involve the strategic development of the business, maintaining and acquiring new clients and contacts and internally encouraging and supporting all members of staff and partners. Euan is an accredited Intellectual Property specialist and joined MacRoberts as a Partner in 2012. In addition, Euan is Head of the Food and Drink Sector Group, an industry sector that has seen significant growth for the firm in the last

few years. Euan’s role as Chair will be in addition to his growing practice as an IP and commercial contracts expert. Euan Duncan said: “MacRoberts is a firm that has a strategic vision for growth in the next few years. I am hugely proud to be a Partner and the Chair of MacRoberts and look forward to assisting with the implementation and achievement of that vision. Our focus will always be on our clients, our business and our people and this role allows me to focus on all of these. I fully support Neil’s approach and his plans for the future of the firm and I look forward to working closely with him to achieve these.” Managing Partner Neil Kennedy said: “I am delighted Euan has been appointed our new Chair. In my first

year as Managing Partner we have set out ambitious plans for the next three years and Euan is the ideal candidate to help us take these forward as we develop our business.”

Creating an inspiring, stylish and welcoming corporate event can be effortless with a unique Renfrewshire venue, such as Ingliston Country Club & Hotel. World-class equestrian facilities at Ingliston provide a distinctive backdrop for events and the venue’s experienced events team is always on hand, working closely with organisers to ensure every last detail is considered. Ingliston’s extensive facilities can accommodate a wide range of corporate events, from small, intimate gatherings to large scale events for up to 500. Paul Fraser, owner of Ingliston, said: “We recognised a gap in the market for a large event venue on the west coast of Scotland and recently added an indoor marquee to our portfolio of suites. This allows us to accommodate large scale events while offering the high calibre of hospitality that Ingliston is known for. “We are in a fantastic location in Renfrewshire, within a rural setting but just 20 minutes from Glasgow and even less from the airport so our facilities appeal to a wide range of customers, as well as those on our doorstep.” The new indoor marquee is ideal for large events with space to comfortably accommodate 500. Ingliston also offers event space in the elegant Salerno and Connemara suites which can accommodate 150 and 160 guests respectively. The Ingliston estate also boasts accommodation for 130 guests across luxury lodges, with hot tubs and individual sauna pods, and a boutique hotel making it an ideal choice for events that require high-quality and easily accessible accommodation. ESTABLISH COMMON PURPOSE ACROSS CIVIC SOCIETY, URGES SCC PRESIDENT SCC President Tim Allen

B

ME SCC President, Tim Allan, addressed senior business leaders from across Scotland and beyond, urging business and government to establish a common purpose across the nation. Speaking at the Annual Scottish Business Address by the Scottish Chambers of Commerce he was joined by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Chief Executive of London Stock Exchange plc, Nikhil Rathi who also addressed the flagship business event. Tim Allan, President, Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said: “Establishing a common purpose between government, business and civic society is central to tackling the big challenges facing our economy, requiring long-term solutions and unwavering commitment. There is no doubt we are in a challenging environment, politically, economically and culturally. The solution, however, is not political point-

scoring, but taking a pragmatic realworld view with our local communities and businesses in mind.” On pledging business leadership through the Scottish Chambers of Commerce, Tim continued: “We will provide business leadership on the critical economic issues that are holding back growth in our economy, and practical business-led solutions, so that all communities and businesses can thrive. We need to move forward with pace and ambition and do what’s right, to enable the Scottish economy to grow.” Welcoming the £2m investment announced by the First Minister to support Scottish businesses to export through the Scottish Chambers of Commerce Network, Tim Allan said: “The Scottish Chambers of Commerce Network plays a central role in Scotland in driving business growth in all of our communities and this additional investment will enable more small and

medium-sized businesses to grasp the trade opportunities that we know are out there. “Through our Scottish and international network, over the last 18 months, we have galvanised the expertise and connectivity of the business community, developed strong business to business trade alliances with over 20 countries and successfully tapped into our unique network of Scottish business people located and trading all over the world. We achieved remarkable results and have proven the benefits of all of us working together, recognising the respective strengths of business and public sector. “This truly unique Scottish model has reimagined and reshaped how we tackle the big challenges facing our economy. The Scottish business community is energised to play our part, building on what we do best, getting orders, creating wealth and jobs for all.”

Veterans Minister hails SBMC’s place on Government’s National Framework

Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company has been awarded a place on a multi-million pound national contract that helps the country’s councils source road signs. The four-year Scotland Excel framework for the supply and delivery of road signage materials has today been awarded to 11 suppliers, including Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company in Renfrewshire. The organisation was launched at the start of this year to provide employment opportunities to Scottish Armed Forces veterans who need support and rehabilitation, enabling them to work and to develop independence. All 11 suppliers are SMEs and now have an opportunity to secure a share of the framework’s business – estimated to be worth £5m over four years. SBMC, run in collaboration with Erskine, offers crucial, flexible working employment to Scottish veterans – who are twice as likely to be unemployed as their civilian counterparts – to move them towards independence after their return to the civilian world.

As a socially-thriving, commercially competitive social enterprise, it produces bespoke, road and rail signs, specialist engineering cutting, circular economy products, and provide print, mail and fulfilment services – all areas which it has heavily invested in. The Bishopton-based company’s most recent purchase is a Flow Corp high pressured waterjet – which uses Australian garnet abrasive to cut virtually any material up to 150mm thick to accuracies of 0.06mm. Councillor John Shaw, Convener of Scotland Excel said: “I welcome the award of this framework which will help councils across the country source the road signage they need to keep their road networks operating safely and efficiently. “This framework is good for business as the 11 suppliers are all SMEs – two of which are micro businesses, and it is also positive for councils as it will deliver savings and has secured fixed prices for a year. “Being awarded a place on this framework is a great opportunity for

the suppliers, which include Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company in Erskine - a social enterprise and a supported business. “This framework has social responsibility at its core by giving councils the option to source quality products while at the same time helping people who face disadvantages, to gain meaningful employment.” Michelle Ferguson, Director at Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company said: “We are delighted to join an 11-strong supplier list on the framework. Our organisation is a trading division of the Royal British Legion Industriesand was launched at the start of the year. “Our aim is to build a dynamic community for veterans which has employment and independence at its heart. “Being part of this framework brings us an excellent opportunity to do business with Scotland’s councils, and it is very fitting that this comes immediately after Armistice Day.”

Ryanair routes return and Bucharest capacity boost good news for Airport and Renfrewshire Get inspired at glasgowairport.com/flygla

Ryanair has announced plans to reintroduce four routes Alicante, Charleroi in Brussels, Malaga and Warsaw at Glasgow Airport next year. The return of these popular services will take the total number of routes operated by the airline at Glasgow Airport to seven. Mark Johnston, Managing Director at Glasgow Airport, said: “Ryanair’s decision to bring back what were four popular routes is very welcome news indeed. “The introduction of these services is hopefully a first step to Ryanair re-establishing a strong presence here and we are really pleased the airline recognises our position as the West of Scotland’s principal airport and gateway to the region’s huge market. “Ryanair cited that the continued lack of movement on proposals to cut Air Passenger Duty was a key factor in the airline’s decision to significantly reduce its operation at Glasgow Airport earlier this year. “While we rightly celebrate the return of these services in addition to the three we retained at the time, it is worth remembering that at its peak Ryanair operated a further 16 routes which supported a significant number of jobs at its Glasgow Airport base. “This regressive tax continues to put the country’s air services at risk and action must be taken to address this. That is why we are again calling on both the Scottish and Westminster governments to work together to break the current deadlock around Air Departure Tax.” Flights to Warsaw will commence on Monday, April 1, with

Mark Johnston MD, Glasgow Airport

Alicante, Brussels and Malaga starting on Tuesday, April 2. In addition to the return of the Ryanair routes, Blue Air has also confirmed it will increase capacity on its Bucharest service by an additional 20,000 seats in 2019. The current winter schedule will increase from two flights per weeks every Thursday and Sunday to include an additional Monday service. From April 5 next year the summer schedule will increase from three flights per week every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday to include an additional Friday service. Blue Air’s Bucharest service was first launched at Glasgow Airport in 2015 and the Romanian city continues to be a popular destination for leisure and business travellers.

EMIRATES TO CREATE SCOTTISH AVIATION HISTORY WITH INTRODUCTION OF GLASGOW A380 SERVICE Get inspired at glasgowairport.com/flygla

Glasgow Airport will help create Scottish aviation history following confirmation today (Monday 17 December) that Emirates is to introduce Scotland’s first-ever scheduled A380 service. Standing over 24 metres high and with a wing span of nearly 80 metres, the A380 is the world’s largest commercial aircraft and it will enter operation at Glasgow Airport on Tuesday 16 April 2019. It will operate throughout the summer season until the end of October 2019. Since Emirates’ inaugural flight at Glasgow Airport on 10 April 2004, it has been one of the airport’s biggest success stories carrying more than four million passengers across its global network which now covers 155 destinations. The airline’s decision to introduce its flagship A380 confirms its status as Scotland’s leading long-haul airline. The A380 will offer passengers 14 Private Suites in First Class, 76 fully flat-bed seats in Business Class and 399 seats in Economy Class. Flight EK025 will depart Dubai at 14.50 and arrive in Glasgow at 19.45, with EK026 taking off for Dubai at 21.30, from 16 April until 31 May 2019. Between 1 June and 30th September 2019, EK027 will depart Dubai at 7.50 and land in Glasgow at 12.45, with EK028 departing at 14.35 from Glasgow. It is the second time Glasgow Airport will welcome the A380 which first visited on 10 April 2014 to celebrate Emirates’ 10th anniversary at the city. Mark Johnston, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, said: “The decision by Emirates to introduce the A380 is not only a huge milestone for Glasgow Airport, it marks what is a first in Scottish aviation industry. “We have forged a valued relationship with Emirates since its inaugural flight in April 2004 and the introduction of Scotland’s first-ever scheduled A380 service represents a major vote of confidence in the city. We are currently investing in excess of £8M in our infrastructure to ensure Glasgow Airport is ready to welcome this iconic aircraft when it touches down next April.”

A380 visiting Glasgow in 2014 to celebrate Emirates’ 10th anniversary at the city.

Richard Jewsbury, Divisional Vice President UK, Emirates commented: “Scotland is a key part of our success in the UK and we are pleased to be bringing the A380 to Glasgow. The Emirates A380 is one of the most iconic aircraft in the world and it continues to delight passengers. From the exclusive shower spas in First Class, to the on board lounge for First and Business Class customers to the spacious seats in Economy Class, the in-flight experience on our A380 is like no other.” Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “Emirates’ decision to create Scottish aviation history in Glasgow not only reinforces the airline’s confidence in Glasgow Airport, it further reaffirms its commitment to the entire Glasgow city region. Its decision to introduce an A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, on its Glasgow route is further evidence of its success in and is one which will massively increase Emirates’ capacity to and from our city. “Having two flights out of Dubai – one of the world’s largest hub airports – arriving in the city everyday greatly increases Glasgow’s global connectivity, particularly through Emirates’ worldwide route network, and today’s announcement is another positive step in terms of forging greater business links and increasing visitor access from key emerging markets such as China and India.

“Our international city marketing strategy, which underpins our Tourism and Visitor Plan to 2023, is anchored in working collaboratively with Glasgow Airport, carriers and wider city and national partners, and we remain committed to developing direct and sustainable air routes that connect Glasgow to the international marketplace.” Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity Michael Matheson said: “I welcome Emirates’ decision to introduce the very first A380 service in Scotland. This increase in capacity is a huge vote of confidence in Glasgow Airport and in Scotland as a whole. “It further strengthens our connectivity with the United Arab Emirates, as well as with markets in Asia, Africa and Australasia which are important for Scottish business and our vital tourism sector.” Glasgow Chamber of Commerce chief executive Stuart Patrick added: “That Emirates has made this decision demonstrates the success of the doubledaily service to Dubai and shows confidence in both Glasgow Airport and the city. It also further improves an important route offering access to Dubai Airport, the biggest global international hub, and in particular grows Glasgow’s access to Asia, which has some of the fastest growing markets in the world.”

The final countdown to Making Tax Digital Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a Government initiative affecting the way all taxpayers will deal with their tax affairs in the digital age. The aim of this new legislation, through increased automation and reduced human error, is to improve efficiency and to ultimately make the tax system operate much more closely to “real time”. This only includes a limited number of taxpayers, including trusts, “not for profit” organisations that are not companies, VAT divisions, VAT groups, certain public sector entities; Government departments, NHS trusts; local authorities, public corporations, traders based overseas, those required to make payments on account and annual accounting scheme users. NEW LOOK, NEW NAME, FOR THE CLAN

During the summer, professional ice hockey in the West of Scotland saw a brand new look with the Braehead Clan’s decision to rebrand to the Glasgow Clan. The Clan who are now in their ninth season competing in the Elite Ice Hockey League and have become one of Scotland’s sports success stories with regular 3,000+ attendances and in recent years, have qualified for the Champions Hockey League, the premier club competition in Europe. Formally launched at a press conference at 29 Glasgow, in the heart of Glasgow, to media, corporate partners, supporters, the Clan believe their new identity demonstrates their continued commitment to the West of Scotland as they look to further grow our reach here in Scotland and internationally.

Clan Chief Operating Officer Gareth Chalmers commented: “We are absolutely delighted with the decision to re-brand from the Braehead Clan to the Glasgow Clan for the 2018/19 season. “Since our inception in 2010, the growth of the Clan on and off the ice has been phenomenal. From attendances of 800 at Braehead Arena in our inaugural

season to attendances of over 3,000+ fans that we are now achieving, the West of Scotland continues to support the sport in the Elite Ice Hockey League. “While the Clan will always be synonymous with the Braehead name, we feel it’s now time to incorporate one the UK’s biggest cities into the organisations future, which we believe will further enhance our corporate partnerships, community engagement programme and player recruitment process heading forward. “It is a natural progression to incorporate Glasgow into the name, which will ultimately help us maximise the brand and growth even further. “While we are moving away from the Braehead name, our home remains in Renfrewshire, our relationship with intu Braehead and Braehead Arena remains paramount to our future plans. Being associated with such a reputable brand has been very beneficial to the Club over the past eight seasons. General manager at intu Braehead Leisure, Scott Martin said: “I’m sure Glasgow Clan will go from strength to strength as their home rink in The Arena at intu Braehead provides the team and their fans with the biggest and best ice facility in Scotland for playing and watching professional ice hockey.” For further information on the Glasgow Clan visit their website: www.clanihc. com or follow them on their social media channels: @ClanIHC.

Renfrewshire Council Updates:

New Clyde bridge brings major economic boost Artist’s impression of the new crossing. Photo credit: Sweco/KettleCollective

A new crossing over the River Clyde will deliver a “significant economic boost” to the region according to Renfrewshire Council Leader Iain Nicolson. The bridge, linking Renfrew and Yoker, is part of the Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project, which is expected to create more than 2300 jobs and inject £867million into the regional economy. Scottish Government ministers have now given the green light to the project which will benefit businesses and greatly improve access to employment, education, health and leisure for communities on both sides of the river. Leading engineering consultancy Sweco and Kettle Collective, the award-winning architects behind the Falkirk Wheel, have developed the designs for the crossing, which will be the first opening road bridge over the River Clyde. Also included in the project are new roads, walkways and cycle routes into a 150-acre site next to Glasgow Airport

being developed into an advanced manufacturing district. Welcoming the decision, Councillor Nicolson said: “This is fantastic news for the entire city region and for Scotland. Current businesses will gain access to more customers and suppliers, while new companies and developers will be attracted to locate to the regenerated waterfront. “Communities on both sides of the Clyde will benefit from greatly improved access to their work, to education and to hospitals through the new connections which will also help reduce congestion and improve journey times. “It builds on the development of the new manufacturing district which will bring thousands of new high skilled jobs and training opportunities to Renfrewshire and the wider region and help secure the future of Scotland’s vital manufacturing industry. “We will continue to work closely with neighbouring councils to ensure the project delivers on its significant

potential and the benefits reach all communities on both sides of the Clyde.” Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside construction is scheduled to start in 2020 and be completed in 2022. It is one of three Glasgow City Region City Deal-funded projects in Renfrewshire alongside the Glasgow Airport Investment Area project, which will deliver the underpinning infrastructure behind the new manufacturing district and the flagship Glasgow Airport Access Project. Start-Up Street will help Renfrewshire businesses grow Start-Up Street photo shows textile designer Chloe Wright who runs Loopy Lally Designs

A new project in Paisley will support start-up businesses looking to make the leap into their first commercial premises. The town’s George Street will become Start-Up Street as vacant Renfrewshire Council-owned units are adapted into a range of low-cost, high-quality digitally-connected workspaces for up to 20 businesses. It follows a survey of new and early-stage Renfrewshire businesses, with more than 80% looking for subsidised space to grow, but many citing high costs and a lack of know-how preventing them taking this significant step. George Street is next to the University of the West of Scotland business school and close to the council’s existing economic development hubs. Businesses based here will benefit from an on-site business advisor, training space and a shared reception. Each company can rent the space for up to two years, with lease costs incrementally increased until they are ready to move to an alternative commercial space in Renfrewshire. For Paisley textile designer Chloe Wright, who founded Loopy Lally designs in 2017, the project is right up her street. She said: “My business is growing and moving into new

premises is the natural next step for me, it’s really exciting. You can be waiting for years for studio space so Start-Up Street is coming at the perfect time. “It sounds great, especially having business advice available whenever you need it. Sometimes you can be too close to your business and so it helps to pick people’s brains and get helpful feedback.” Renfrewshire Council Leader Iain Nicolson said: “We have a responsibility to nurture new businesses and Start-Up Street is being developed in response to what local businesses are telling us they need. “It will provide a whole package of support to enable businesses to overcome any barriers and grow sustainably, offering an environment which helps them achieve long-term sustainability, moving into commercial premises in our town centres.” The Council’s economic development team are developing Start-Up Street working jointly with London Youth Support Trust, a charity which specialises in supporting young entrepreneurs from deprived backgrounds. SCHOOL UPDATES: Local pupils set to shine with Beatles legend Paul McCartney returns to Glasgow for his first Scottish show in almost a decade today (Friday) and some talented local young people will be joining him on stage. The group from Paisley Grammar School have been selected to perform on stage at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow during the finale of Paul McCartney’s ‘Freshen Up’ show. The twenty-four pupils from the school will join the Beatles legend to sing the chorus part of the Christmas classic ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ in front of a sold-out crowd of over 10,000 people. Mollie Quinn, a third year pupil at the school said “We’re so excited to be given the opportunity to perform at the SSE Hydro. The whole group have been

working really hard rehearsing.” Second year pupil, Emma Loney added “It’s an amazing opportunity to be part of something special.” Head of Expressive Arts at Paisley Grammar, Andrew Dickie said the pupils have been rehearsing very hard this week with only a couple of days’ notice to prepare. He added “To perform in the SSE Hydro in front of a sold-out crowd is a once in a lifetime opportunity – and a great way to end the term.” Paul McCartney’s last concerts in London and Birmingham took place in 2015 and were part of his Out There world tour, which ran from 2013 – 2015. His last visit to Scotland was in 2010 at Hampden Park. Education and Children’s Services

Pupils and Head of Expressive Arts Andrew Dickie

Convenor, Councillor Jim Paterson said: “This is an incredible opportunity for our young people to be involved in a large-scale production – something that very few people ever get to experience. “Opportunities like this really showcase the wealth of talent we have in our Renfrewshire schools and I wish all the pupils the very best of luck.”

Renfrew High ‘Spotlight’ Stadium Extravaganza at St Mirren Park S3 Employability Elective class from Renfrew High took part in an ‘Apprentice’ style challenge at St Mirren Stadium with St Mirren Football Club Community Trust as part of the school’s Business Development Partnership Project. The aim: to develop and then showcase their employability skills. The group spent two days working in two teams, answering a brief provided by the St Mirren Football Club Community Trust team to develop a concept for a stadium concert at the venue. The teams created company names (‘Spotlight Events’ and ‘Criss Cross Entertainment’) in addition to logos and brand identities, used throughout their concept and final pitch to the board. Spotlight Events were the victors on the

day, but both teams displayed exceptional creativity and endurance throughout. Head Teacher at Renfrew High, Billy Burke said: “This project with our partners at St Mirren Club Community Trust exceeded our hopes and expectations. Thanks to all involved for giving their time and ensuring such a fabulous experience for our young people” One pupil from Spotlight Events enthused, “I really wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had the best two days ever. Everyone shared so much knowledge with us. I am so proud of myself for presenting in front of the panel, especially, Tony Fitzpatrick and Tommy from Live and Loud!” Another pupil from Criss Cross Entertainment said, “I learned so much about the employability skill that I

actually already have, but that was hidden inside. I now believe in my ability. I don’t ever like to present in school, but now I will be volunteering to go first” Caroline McColl, Renfrew High Employability Coordinator said: “What an exceptional two days. Thank you to all the staff involved on the day for their time, effort, and wealth of experience, and also to the Trust for believing in our concept and investing the time in the preplanning for such a successful project” “Our young people had such an exciting experience. One pupil has now opted to change her whole course direction due to this ‘real life’ opportunity. I look forward to developing these new found skills further with our young people in class.”
