President’s Welcome On behalf of the Board of directors, management and staff, welcome to the ROCCO’s 2017, the Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. We are here tonight to celebrate business excellence in Renfrewshire, with the ROCCO’s: the annual business awards of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, now in their 14th year. Of the many events we hold each year, this is our premier event and the largest business black tie dinner in Renfrewshire. Companies know that by gaining recognition for their hard work they can further benefit their business. Winning a ROCCO is a great achievement.
Tom Johnston President, Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce
The decision making process was, as expected, incredibly tough, with the quality of applications yet again of a very high standard. Once more we received over one hundred entries. Congratulations to everyone who entered as you all had a success story to share. For those of you who did not make the shortlist, we hope you will try again next year. I wish to thank the 33 judges who gave up their time to judge the entries and to attend the presentations from the shortlisted companies. The judging process is intense and the contribution of these volunteers is invaluable. In addition I wish to thank all our sponsors for their support, as without it the ROCCO’s would not be possible. Our sponsors in common with your Chamber are genuinely committed to the promotion
of Business excellence in Renfrewshire. The ROCCO’s is a night of celebration, so please enjoy yourself and let’s collectively celebrate the fact that Renfrewshire is a world-class area in which to do business. Support your Chamber and it will support you.
Tom Johnston President, Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce

Principal Sponsor’s Welcome I am delighted that the Paisley 2021 bid is once again the principal sponsor of tonight’s ROCCO awards. The bid to be UK City of Culture 2021 has galvanised communities across Renfrewshire and the response of the business community has been truly phenomenal. More than 200 companies have signed our pledge to ‘back the bid’ and we are immensely grateful for their support. Thirteen companies so far with links to Paisley have pledged over a quarter of a million pounds. Companies of international standing have thrown their weight behind the bid. And we’ve seen some ingenious ways for businesses to publicly demonstrate their backing for the bid. In just three weeks’ time, the bid team will travel to Hull to make final presentations to the competition judges and, soon after, we’ll know if Paisley has won this coveted title. We estimate that holding the title could bring a £175m economic boost for the local economy and create the equivalent of more than 4,700 jobs over a ten-year period. The international spotlight on the area could deliver 1 million visitors.

ROCCO BUSINESS AWARDS 2017
We want everyone to benefit from the opportunities that will be created – in education, skills development and employment. This would have a transformational impact on Paisley and Renfrewshire’s fortunes. This is our time to step out of the shadows and tell Paisley’s story to the world.
Please continue to show your support and ‘back the bid’ during this final push for the title. With thanks. Cllr Jim Paterson Depute Leader of Renfrewshire Council

The Paisley Daily Express has been serving the Renfrewshire community since 1874.
Paisley Daily Express readers were asked to nominate who they thought would be a worthy winner of Renfrewshire’s Favourite Business – taking into aspects of the business, such as their product(s), service & quality. The judges selected a shortlist of 6 from the many entries and encouraged people to vote for their favourite online. The organisation with the most votes will be crowned the winner tonight!
Over the decades, the paper has been through countless changes and seen politicians, council leaders and provosts come and go - but we are still here.

The Express has, proudly, always been seen as a champion of the community it serves and its journalists have never shied away from taking on tough subjects. Over time, we have campaigned for changes in knife crime sentencing, teamed up with the NHS on an awardwinning campaign to encourage people to stop smoking and also took a great risk with our shop-a-dealer anti-drugs initiative.
Gavin McInally, Editor, Paisley Daily Express
We also devoted great resources to helping St Vincent’s Hospice, in Howwood, aiming to raise £1million in a calendar year - and, very proudly, succeeded. As well as tackling the big issues of the day, our job is to supply people with the information they need on issues ... no matter how small. Our readers are the most important people to us and we are always happy to investigate any genuine concerns they raise, support their charity efforts and send our photographer to their community events. Currently, times are tough for newspapers and we at the Express feel we have adapted well to social media, online content and changing technology without losing sight of the fact that our readers must come first. We are honoured to sponsor the Rocco Award for Renfrewshire’s Favourite Business and to be more involved in Renfrewshire’s highly-respected annual business Oscars.

ROCCO Award for Family Business of the Year The Malcolm Group is arguably one of the UK’s leading providers of thirdparty logistics, construction and vehicle maintenance services. Originating as a family-owned business in the Renfrewshire area back in the 1920’s, it’s safe to say The Group’s operations have grown substantially.
Andrew Malcolm, CEO of The Malcolm Group
From its beginnings with assets of only a single horse and cart used to transport coal around the Johnstone area, not only has The Group expanded in terms of the services offered but also in its scale of operations which are now throughout the whole of the UK. It was the hard work and strategic investment in vehicles, plant and depots by Donald Malcolm that brought the business to what we know today.

ROCCO Award for Outstanding Performing Business <5 FTE An economic powerhouse is how intu Braehead can be described, as it attracts people, jobs and wealth to Renfrewshire.
Finalists
It’s certainly more than just a shopping centre. Since it was opened in 1999, it has acted as a catalyst for the creation of one of Scotland’s top leisure attractions with Soar at intu Braehead; a retail park, new homes, hotels, office premises and business space.
Angelwax Based in Scotland near the city of Glasgow, we have a research, development and manufacturing facility from where all of the Angelwax product range is created before being shipped all over the world.
The benefit to the local economy is £146 million every year with intu Braehead bringing 6,780 direct jobs - nine per cent of everyone employed in Renfrewshire – paying £88 million in wages every year. This money - The intu Braehead Pound – can then be spent by Bruce Harley Guest the wage earners throughout Renfrewshire, Services Manager for supporting other shops and businesses in intu Braehead towns and villages locally. The regeneration of the River Clyde from King George V Dock to the Renfrew Ferry that we see now was sparked by intu Braehead and the huge private investment that has gone into creating such a retail, leisure, residential and business destination. In the past 15 years we have seen huge economic growth, all this on land that was once derelict and unused. intu Braehead is a success story for Renfrewshire having created a mixed-use development that attracts millions of people to the area every year. What goes on at intu Braehead is the giant magnet for people from outside Renfrewshire that other towns and villages locally can feed off by providing complementary attractions in retail and leisure. Although hundreds of millions of pounds in private investment has gone into creating intu Braehead as it is today, it doesn’t have to stop there. Earlier this year, planning consent in principle has been granted to create a department store, a new multi-purpose arena, civic square, hotel and a new integrated transport interchange that can facilitate the proposed Fastlink service planned to run from the new Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow to Renfrew. This new development will provide a further £200 million investment in Renfrewshire creating 2000 construction jobs and 3000 jobs in retail and leisure once completed and pump even more money into the local economy.

Small businesses are vital to the success of our economy, our communities and our future. So I take great pleasure in having the opportunity to present this award tonight. The council offers small businesses a range of support through the Invest in Renfrewshire programme and it’s encouraging to know that so many local businesses are engaging with the Invest team. Wage subsidies, grants, loans and advice all help a small or medium-sized business to thrive. This is an exciting time for our area with the major investment of the City Deal programme and, of course, Paisley’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021. Small businesses are well-placed to benefit from these opportunities and it has been great to see them show their support so publicly.
