President’s Welcome We are here tonight to celebrate business excellence in Renfrewshire, with the ROCCO’s: the annual business awards of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, now in their 11th year. Of the many events we hold each year, this is our premier event and the largest business black tie dinner in Renfrewshire. Companies know that by gaining recognition for their hard work they can further benefit their business. Winning a ROCCO is a great achievement.

Tom Johnston President, Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce

On behalf of the Board of directors, management and staff, welcome to the ROCCO’s 2014, the Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

The decision making process was, as expected, incredibly tough, with the quality of applications yet again of a very high standard. In this the 50th year of your Chamber we received more entries than ever before. Congratulations to everyone who entered as you all had a success story to share. For those of you who did not make the shortlist, we hope you will try again next year. I wish to thank the 34 judges who gave up their time to judge the entries and to attend the presentations from the shortlisted companies. The judging process is intense and the contribution of these volunteers is invaluable. In addition I wish to thank all our sponsors for their support, as without it the ROCCO’s would not be possible. Our sponsors in common with your Chamber are genuinely committed to the promotion of Business excellence in Renfrewshire.

The ROCCO’s is a night of celebration, so please enjoy yourself and let’s collectively celebrate the fact that Renfrewshire is a world-class area in which to do business. Support your Chamber and it will support you.

Tom Johnston President, Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce

Principal Sponsor’s Welcome University of the West of Scotland is proud to sponsor the 2014 ROCCO Awards as part of our partnership working with Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce. As we develop into one of Scotland’s most innovative modern universities, our aim is to change lives, transform communities and encourage enterprise through outstanding, distinctive and progressive higher education. Our focus is on personalised learning experiences supported by internationally recognised research to ensure UWS graduates will be work-ready and contribute locally and globally. In 2013/14 our core activities generated around £79million and supported 1600 jobs in Renfrewshire and almost £115million and 2470 jobs in Scotland, as a whole. In our new corporate strategy, launched at an event held in the Scottish Parliament in October and attended by a number of our private and public sector partners, we set out unashamedly bold and ambitious targets for UWS growth to foster a culture of enterprise that will support economic growth locally and globally. Across our campuses an ever-increasing number of EU and international students are choosing to study with us and we have development plans for campuses outside the UK. We aim to bring a strong international dimension into all of our activities – from teaching and learning to research and commercialisation and welcome the opportunity to foster stronger links with our local businesses. Host & Entertainment “2014 has been a remarkable year for Scotland with The Commonwealth Games, the Referendum and The Ryder Cup. I’ve been involved in all three: either presenting on Radio 5 Live, Interviewing Tom Watson and Paul McGinley on stage at The Hydro in front of 10,000 people or putting my X in one of two boxes on 18th Sept.

But these things are “one-offs” and The ROCCO’s are perennial, so I’m as delighted to be back as your host for these awards ..... as there’s no greater accolade in my business than to be asked back! I look forward to entertaining (in equal measure) the nominees, the winners and the people who are just along for a really good night out!” - Fred MacAulay

ROCCO Award for Excellence in Customer Service intu Braehead is an economic powerhouse that puts £146 million into the local economy every year. The numbers are impressive and speak for themselves. intu Braehead provides 6,780 direct jobs - nine per cent of everyone employed in Renfrewshire – paying £88 million in wages every year. This money - The intu Braehead Pound – can then be spent throughout Renfrewshire, supporting shops and businesses in towns and villages locally. Opening in 1999, intu Braehead has been the catalyst for the regeneration of the River Clyde from King George V Dock to the Renfrew Ferry. In 14 years we have seen huge economic growth in leisure, commerce, retail and residential sectors at Braehead. All this on land that was once derelict and unused. Christine Olsen, Customer Services Manager Braehead

intu Braehead is a success story for Renfrewshire having created a mixed-use development that attracts millions of people to Renfrewshire every year. Braehead is the giant magnet for people from outside Renfrewshire that other towns and villages locally can feed off by providing complementary attractions in retail and leisure.

Hundreds of millions of pounds in private investment has gone into creating intu Braehead as it is today. But it doesn’t stop there. Plans have been announced to invest a further £200 million to create a department store, a new multi-purpose arena, civic square, hotel and a new integrated transport interchange that can facilitate the proposed Fastlink service planned to run from the Southern General Hospital, in Glasgow to Renfrew. This new development will provide a further 2000 construction jobs and 3000 jobs in retail and leisure once completed and pump even more money into the Renfrewshire economy.

ROCCO Award for Invest in Renfrewshire Invest in Renfrewshire is the council’s flagship programme to boost the local economy and tackle youth unemployment. Since its launch in 2012, more than 650 local businesses have signed up to take part in the scheme. In that time, Invest has supported the creation of almost 700 new jobs, while helping a further 1,700 people into employment. The programme includes various packages of financial support designed to help businesses take on new staff and grow their operations. In return for this support, firms are asked to look at creating employment opportunities for local young people, such as a new job or a graduate internship. Councillor Mark Macmillan, Leader of Renfrewshire Council

One of the key aims behind Invest in Renfrewshire is to help build lasting partnerships between the council and the local businesses community. This is because the council recognises it cannot tackle unemployment alone, it must do so by working with local firms to help create opportunities.

The Invest in Renfrewshire award is for the company which best embodies the spirit of this agreement. All the nominees have shown a real commitment to the area by investing in its young people and tonight’s nomination is a recognition of all they have given back to the local community. The Invest in Renfrewshire Team would like to offer our congratulations to the three nominees. We look forward to working with you all again in the future. - Find out more about Invest by calling 0300 300 1180, emailing invest@renfrewshire.gov.uk, visiting www.investinrenfrewshire.com, or following @InvestinRen on Twitter.

ROCCO Award for Family Business of the Year The Malcolm Group is arguably one of the UK’s leading providers of third-party logistics, construction, and vehicle maintenance services. Originating as a family-owned business in the Renfrewshire area back in the 1920’s, it’s safe to say The Group’s operations have grown substantially. From its beginnings with assets of only a single horse and cart used to transport coal around the Johnstone area, not only has The Group expanded in terms of the services offered but also in its scale of operations which are now throughout the whole of the UK. It was the hard work and strategic investment in vehicles, plant and depots by Donald Malcolm that brought the business to what we know today. John Melrose, Sales Director, The Malcolm Group

Starting life as a private company, The Group went on to enjoy forty-five successful years in the ‘public’ domain before ownership was once again with the Malcolm family.

Today, the company is run by Donald’s two sons, Andrew and Walter, who along with their team of 2,000 staff continue to see the business grow and develop. Over the years, The Group has achieved much success and remains a forward-thinking organisation throughout its divisions but is proud to have preserved its heritage, in maintaining a personalised and hands-on management approach which is unique to any family-run business.

We also understand that small businesses are the backbone of our communities and should be supported in their efforts to grow and create jobs. The current economic climate presents many challenges to smaller firms, which only makes it more important that the public sector is able to offer a helping hand. This is one of the reasons why the council has made a sizable financial commitment to the local economy through our Invest in Renfrewshire scheme. It offers a range of funding packages aimed at helping businesses grow – such as wage subsidies to help firms take on new staff, and grants to help them pursue growth projects. The downturn only makes it more important that we highlight and applaud the success stories of the local companies who are performing well.

Cllr Michael Holmes, Renfrewshire Council Deputy Leader

This is why Renfrewshire Council is delighted to sponsor the ROCCO award for Outstanding Performing Business (five to 25 employees). The three nominees belong to different sectors but each has – in their own way – made a valuable contribution to the local economy. Working With Young People Young people are our future and the Chamber invests a great deal of resource in this area covering all ages from nursery to students. From the schools partnership agreement with Council Education Department and our support of the Recruit and Invest in Renfrewshire, to our role in the running and delivery of the Young Enterprise Scotland Company Programme. Other programmes supported include Mission Discovery, Primary Engineer, Dragons Den, Skills Ambassador and the Certificate of Work Readiness. The Chamber also gives talks, sponsors & judges competitions and helps forge business relationships across schools, UWS and West College Scotland. Your Chamber was involved directly with Sir Ian Wood in the Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce and the only chamber in Scotland invited to showcase the work we do for young people at the Commission Summit earlier this year at CoSLA. Our work with young people was very recently acknowledged with the Chamber being awarded Investors in Young People accreditation.
