President’s Welcome On behalf of the Board of directors, management and staff, welcome to the ROCCO’s 2018, the Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. We are here tonight to celebrate business excellence in Renfrewshire, with the ROCCO’s: the annual business awards of Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, now in their 15th year. Of the many events we hold each year, this is our premier event and the largest business black tie dinner in Renfrewshire. Companies know that by gaining recognition for their hard work they can further benefit their business. Winning a ROCCO is a great achievement.
Tom Johnston President, Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce
The decision making process was, as expected, incredibly tough, with the quality of applications yet again of a very high standard. Once more we received over one hundred entries. Congratulations to everyone who entered as you all had a success story to share. For those of you who did not make the shortlist, we hope you will try again next year. I wish to thank the 34 judges who gave up their time to judge the entries and to attend the presentations from the shortlisted companies. The judging process is intense and the contribution of these volunteers is invaluable. In addition I wish to thank all our sponsors for their support, as without it the ROCCO’s would not be possible. Our sponsors in common with your Chamber are genuinely committed to the promotion
of Business excellence in Renfrewshire. The ROCCO’s is a night of celebration, so please enjoy yourself and let’s collectively celebrate the fact that Renfrewshire is a world-class area in which to do business. Support your Chamber and it will support you.
Tom Johnston President, Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce

Principal Sponsor’s Welcome It’s a pleasure to be at the ROCCO Awards tonight for one of the real highlights in the calendar for Renfrewshire’s business community. I’m also delighted to be speaking to you tonight on behalf of Paisley.is, the new destination brand for our area and principal sponsor of these awards. This new destination brand for Paisley and Renfrewshire was launched in March of this year - and has continued to build on the legacy of last year’s UK City of Culture 2021 bid and raise the profile of this area to unprecedented heights. The brand was developed over two years and in consultation with the people of Renfrewshire, some of whom are in the room tonight. As such, it’s designed to reflect who we are and how we want others to see us proud, bold, friendly, fun and together. Successful places are places which promote themselves effectively in a very crowded

marketplace, as we all compete globally for inward investment, visitor numbers and spend in our local economies. A distinctive place brand is a must, and I believe we have that in Paisley.is. We want to continue to grow and develop the brand so that it delivers for our entire area. We all know that this is a great area to visit, to live, to work and to invest in – our attendance here tonight is all the proof we need. The challenge now is to continue telling our story to the rest of the world so that they know it too. The brand is also very much about partnership. The regeneration of our area will require the efforts of all us, working together to make our future as bright as possible. The brand is for everyone, and I’d strongly encourage you to become ambassadors for Paisley.is. Contact the team to find out more about how they can work with you. With thanks Cllr Jim Paterson Depute Leader of Renfrewshire Council

Host & Entertainment I’m delighted to back again to host these annual awards for Renfrewshire Chamber. It’s been a turbulent few years since the financial crash of 2008, but thankfully we’ve heard from The Prime Minister that “austerity is over” and from The Chancellor of the Exchequer that “austerity might be over”! Aye, Right!! I was back in Edinburgh earlier this year for my 30th appearance at The Fringe, and in many of the press interviews around that landmark I always insisted that they knew that my professional career in comedy began in Paisley at The Bar Point in Wellmeadow St. Piero Pieracini helped a number of us on our way into stand up and I’ll always be grateful to him for his enthusiasm. My 2018 highlight was co-hosting Al Murray’s “Why Does Everyone Hate The English” for the Scottish edition of that series. It was great fun filming it in incredible Scottish scenery and in incredible (and sadly rare) Scottish sunshine….which we’ll all remember was magnificent in 2018. 2019 will see me out on the road again with another stand-up tour doing what I love most and I’m delighted to say that Radio 4 will be recording another series of “Fred At The Stand” for broadcast in 2019. Good luck to everyone who has made it to the finals. This a prestigious award ceremony and I’m looking forward to entertaining you all tonight.

ROCCO BUSINESS AWARDS 2018
ROCCO Award for Renfrewshire’s Favourite Business
Finalists
The Paisley Daily Express has been serving the Renfrewshire community since 1874.
Paisley Daily Express readers were asked to nominate who they thought would be a worthy winner of Renfrewshire’s Favourite Business – taking into aspects of the business, such as their product(s), service & quality. The judges selected a shortlist of 6 from the many entries and encouraged people to vote for their favourite online. The organisation with the most votes will be crowned the winner tonight!
Over the decades, the paper has been through countless changes and seen politicians, council leaders and provosts come and go - but we are still here. The Express has, proudly, always been seen as a champion of the community it serves and its journalists have never shied away from taking on tough subjects. Over time, we have campaigned for changes in knife crime sentencing, teamed up with the NHS on an awardwinning campaign to encourage people to stop smoking and also took a great risk with our shop-a-dealer anti-drugs initiative.
Gavin McInally, Editor, Paisley Daily Express
We also devoted great resources to helping St Vincent’s Hospice, in Howwood, aiming to raise £1million in a calendar year - and, very proudly, succeeded. As well as tackling the big issues of the day, our job is to supply people with the information they need on issues ... no matter how small. Our readers are the most important people to us and we are always happy to investigate any genuine concerns they raise, support their charity efforts and send our photographer to their community events. Currently, times are tough for newspapers and we at the Express feel we have adapted well to social media, online content and changing technology without losing sight of the fact that our readers must come first. We are honoured to sponsor the Rocco Award for Renfrewshire’s Favourite Business and to be more involved in Renfrewshire’s highly-respected annual business Oscars.

The Malcolm Group is arguably one of the UK’s leading providers of thirdparty logistics, construction and vehicle maintenance services. Originating as a family-owned business in the Renfrewshire area back in the 1920’s, it’s safe to say The Group’s operations have grown substantially. From its beginnings with assets of only a single horse and cart used to transport coal around the Johnstone area, not only has The Group expanded in terms of the services offered but also in its scale of operations which are now throughout the whole of the UK. It was the hard work and strategic investment in vehicles, plant and depots by Donald Malcolm that brought the business to what we know today.
David Archer Group Managing Director - Corporate
Starting life as a private company, The Group went on to enjoy forty-five successful years in the ‘public’ domain before ownership was once again with the Malcolm family. Today, the company is run by Donald’s two sons, Andrew and Walter, who along with their team of 2,000 staff continue to see the business grow and develop. Over the years, The Group has achieved much success and remains a forward-thinking organisation throughout its divisions but is proud to have preserved its heritage, in maintaining a personalised and hands-on management approach which is unique to any family-run business.

Congratulations to the finalists of the Young Business Person of the Year Award 2018. Once again, West College Scotland is delighted to sponsor this category of the annual Rocco Awards. It is an award which celebrates the enterprise and drive of those young people in Renfrewshire who have stepped out on their own and realised their ambitions. We know their example will inspire many others. At West College Scotland we like to think we also have a role to play in inspiring young people to be successful, either by setting up their own businesses or by gaining the skills to move into well-paid employment.
After all, one in 5 of all Renfrewshire school-leavers comes to our College. While they are with us they will be given the appropriate level of STEM training (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), whatever course they happen to take. That’s because we think of STEM as the “golden thread” running through our entire curriculum, helping prepare students for a lifetime in a flexible, ever-changing world of work. Across the West of Scotland our College has partnerships with 600 employers, ranging from FTSE-100 companies to SMEs. We want those partners to help us shape our curriculum and apprenticeship programmes to ensure they are always up to date and meet the demands of a modern regional economy. West College Scotland is proud to be associated with this award and we wish all the finalists the very best for the future.
