First of January

O

n the first of January in the morning, Irene woke up thinking “I haven’t had breakfast all year.” So she jumped out of bed and ran to the kitchen to get herself a mug of hot chocolate.

She was just finishing her drink when a thought suddenly hit her: “I haven't brushed my teeth all year.”

Again in a hurry, she ran to the bathroom, put some toothpaste on her toothbrush and quickly cleaned her teeth because the moment she finished, she had to comb her hair. “I haven’t combed my hair all year!” she exclaimed.

“I haven’t played all year,” she suddenly discovered. Swinging on the red wardrobe, she opened the doors and her eyes widened at the sight of her favourite toys, as though she had been separated from them for ages.

And that’s how Irene spent the day, discovering her bike, the neighbour’s cat, the plants in the garden, the kitchen drawer where the bar of chocolate was kept... her friend Julia, her kid brother David... her mum, her grandma...

When she finally went to bed and her mother read her a story to send her to sleep, something else she hadn't done all year, she asked her: “Mum, couldn’t every day be the first of January so I could enjoy everything this much?”

“Maybe it could, Irene,” her mother said. “That all depends on whether you want it.”
