—I had no idea that Library Science involved so much moving stuff around, I said. —It’s like working in a warehouse, said Barney, but without lift trucks or a union representative. —Libraries are warehouses, said Bill, wiping the sweat from his prematurely balding head. Except what we stock is books and our inventory is always growing. That's the problem; how do you stuff ten pounds of shit into a five-pound bag? We were deep in the underground archives, Barney, Bill, and me; shuffling serials, churning through a recent endowment of newspapers, journals and magazines. After discarding duplicate copies and throwing out boxes of moldering ruins, what remained was a cross section of two hundred years of popular culture. Integrating it within the existing library collection was what we were doing, one volume at a time.

Bill was one of those little wise guys who seem to burn inside with a lifetime of resentment against people who are taller and not as smart. Bill wore black Levis, pearl-button cowboy shirts, and rolled his own cigarettes. He had a small, neat, beard, three-inch heels on his cowboy boots, and a Masters degree in Philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin.
